  4. OK, we were at the Toy Story 4 press preview last night (at the press conference today and can’t wait to share!). And while the movie itself was adorable, the winner of the night was obviously Forky debuting at Toy Story Land with Woody at the end of the evening! Woody and Forky at Toy Story Land Look at the cuteness! There’s no word on whether Forky will become a permanent meet and greet at Disney World at the moment — this was just for the media event last night — but he was truly a highlight. Woody held Forky, and Forky didn’t speak, but COME ON! Woody and Forky in Toy Story Land And, of course, if you’re a Forky fan, there’s lots of merch coming for you. Don’t miss the Forky magic bands (I really, REALLY might need one of these)… Forky Magic Band …and, of course, here’s the creepier-than-it-needs-to-be Halloween costume! Forky and Bo Peep Halloween Costumes OK, Forky fans, we’ll have more info for you later from the Press Conference. But in the meantime, stay tuned for our Toy Story 4 movie review coming next week! 5. Disney’s Port Orleans — Riverside offers some truly delicious and underrated dining. Learn About: Riverside Mill Food Court Disney World Restaurants Boatwright’s is the resort’s table service dining option, and it’s a terrific under-the-radar spot that’s pretty much always a sure thing, even when other restaurants are packed to the gills. Muddy Rivers is a great pool bar, and River Roost is a charming place to relax with a drink. When it comes to quick service dining at the resort, Riverside Mill is where it’s at. We’ve eaten here many times before, and the variety and quality have typically been pretty top-notch for a hotel food court. The atmosphere of Riverside is another winning attribute, helping diners to relax and refuel in a space that’s rustic and comfortable. When we discovered the menus here had changed, we were eager to try the new items. Port Orleans — Riverside Atmosphere The Riverside Mill has great curb appeal with its blue exterior and long front porch. (Sadly no rocking chairs out there, but that would be nice, right?) Outside at Port Orleans Resort — Riverside Inside continues the rustic charm of the outside with mis-matched wooded chairs and the remnants of the ‘mill’ for which the restaurant is named. Riverside Mill This includes industrial lighting, wood pillars and beams, and even some old mill equipment. Large windows let in a good amount of light during daylight hours, but even still the dining space is pretty dark in places. Seating at Riverside Mill The food court itself is a standard design, with stations for certain categories of food: Salads and Sandwiches Shop, Grill Shop, Pizza Shop, and Bakery. Riverside Mill Cashiers and Layout Menu screens above each station rotate the options, with pictures of some items to give diners a clear idea of what they’ll be getting. Notice Salads and Sandwiches in Riverside Mill The theming of these stations is in keeping with the spirit of the resort, with awnings, wood details, and some New Orleans charm. Grill Station in Riverside Mill Diners will also find Grab-and-Go options that include candy, snacks, and drinks. Grab and Go Snacks Grab and Go Eats When entering Riverside Mill, diners can browse these static menus. It gives you an idea of which station you’ll want to prioritize. It’s a little more efficient than staring up at the rotating screens at each station while you try to recall what you just saw that piqued your interest. Riverside Mill Entrance Menu Riverside Mill Entrance Menu Riverside Mill Entrance Menu Riverside Mill Entrance Menu Note that occasionally the items that appear on the static entrance menus aren’t on the rotating menus. That’s the case at Riverside’s Create Your Own Salad, which is on the entrance menu but not actually available at present. The electric menu boards over each station feature a few pictures to give you an idea of what to expect. As a general rule, these are some nicely staged food photos that are a little tidier than the actual product. But it’s still helpful! At the Salads and Sandwiches Shop diners find a Hoagie, Pimento BLT, Barbecue Pork Sandwich, and Caprese Sandwich. Kid sandwiches are available here, too. Sandwich Screen As mentioned, Create Your Own Salad is not currently an option. Diners are limited to Caesar, Greek, and House Salads. (We heard several people lamenting the loss of the Create Your Own option, so we’ll watch to see if it returns.) Salad Screen At the Pizza Shop, diners can choose from pizza, flatbreads, breadsticks, and pasta. Kids’ pasta dishes and pizza are also available. Pizza and Pasta Screens Pizza and Pasta Menus At the Grill Shop, find hot sandwiches, burgers, and more (including a Fish Sandwich and Corn Dog Nuggets for the kiddos and Chicken Nuggets, a Hot Dog, and vegan burger for grown ups). Grill Menu Grill Menu Any time there are menu additions, we start looking for the deletions, too. At Riverside, the following items have been removed from the menu: Southern Fried Shrimp Platter, Classic Burger, Double Classic Burger, Bayou Burger, Prime Rib Melt, Carved Cajun Turkey Leg Sandwich, and Chicken Salad Sandwich. In their places: the Pimento BLT, a Prime Rib Dip, and a Classic Bacon Burger! Naturally we tried ’em all! New Menu Items at Riverside Mill The Prime Rib Dip from the Grill Shop is a tasty, filling sandwich (you could share this, particularly if you plan on getting dessert!) that comes topped with caramelized onions and melted provolone cheese. (Really melted — not just put on top of a warm sandwich!) Prime Rib Dip It’s served with warm au jus (not too salty, which is often our complaint) and loads of steak fries. Prime Rib Dip The bun is soft and perfect for soaking up the au jus. And the meat was flavorful and thinly sliced. Overall, this was an impressive sandwich for a quick service/food court location! Prime Rib Dip The Pimento BLT is found at the Salads and Sandwiches Shop, and this one is a winner! You know we love Pimento Cheese, but overall it’s still a great option. Plus it’s huge, full of bacon (just wait!), and packed with flavor! Pimento BLT It features standard BLT ingredients: bacon, lettuce (just a thin layer), and tomato. But that slathering of pimento cheese in place of mayo was divine. Why aren’t all BLTs made with pimento cheese?! Pimento BLT And hello, bacon! There were no fewer than six slices of bacon on the sandwich, which is pretty insane. And delicious. Pimento BLT A couple notes about this sandwich: they were already premade behind the counter on our visit, so if you need to make any substitutions or changes, you’ll need to ask if it’s possible. Also, the BLT comes with house-made chips, but the cast member mentioned we could sub in fries; we’d just have to go over to the Grill Shop to get them. Vice versa, if you prefer chips to fries but you’re at the Grill Shop, request to pick up some chips next door at the Sandwich Shop. The Classic Bacon Burger is a new option. This is a pre-made burger (at least on our visit) that was wrapped and sitting in a warmer. Not ideal. The bun and burger ended up being dry (no big surprise there…). Classic Bacon Burger There’s plenty of bacon on this burger, as one would expect, but note that there’s also cheddar cheese (it’s not mentioned anywhere). I picked up toppings like lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickles from the self-serve toppings area at the Grill Shop, so be sure not to miss those. Classic Bacon Burger The star of the burger was, oddly enough, the garlic ranch sauce! So flavorful and made a HUGE difference in the texture and taste. Classic Bacon Burger My favorite part of this entree was actually the Creole Cole Slaw on the side! This was an oil-based slaw that was more sweet than salty or spicy. With a name like Creole Cole Slaw we were expecting a bigger hit from the spice, but honestly it was delicious so we didn’t mind. Creole Coleslaw You can finish your meal with a dessert from the Bakery case. There are loads of awesome options, including the newest specialty cupcake and classics like Red Velvet Cupcakes, Chocolate Chip Cookies, and Cheesecake. Riverside Mill Food Court Cupcakes Bo Peep Cupcake But don’t forget the Magic Cookie Bar which is, as the name suggests, pure sugary magic. Magic Cookie Bar at Riverside Mill So 2/3 big hits with Riverside Mill’s new menu items, and we’re happy to say this relaxing spot is still a really good food court option! Nosh or Not? Paddle into Riverside Mill if: You’re staying at Port Orleans — Riverside or French Quarter and need a bite to eat! You love the architecture of Port Orleans — Riverside and want to visit even if you’re not staying there. You love a Disney food court and want to try a good one. Head downstream if: You aren’t staying at Port Orleans — Riverside and don’t want to travel there for a food court. You just don’t care for food court food. Hello! Disney Springs is a Sassagoula River Cruise away, and you want to try a restaurant there. Overall We enjoy the food courts of the Port Orleans Resorts, and Riverside offers lots of atmospheric charm in addition to a pretty tasty menu! Like most food courts, it’s not a destination, per se, but if you’re staying in the French Quarter or visiting the resorts from nearby Disney Springs, Riverside is worth a stop for a quick bite to eat! 6. Red Rose Taverne is the Beauty and the Beast overlay of Village Haus that, apparently, became a permanent prisoner of Disneyland Park because it shows no signs of being released. The overlay began in 2017 as a promo for the live-action Beauty and the Beast film released that year, and the French- and movie-inspired dishes gained popularity right away. (You can see our very first review of the quick service menu here!) And now we’re back to enjoy items from the Taverne’s lunch and dinner menu. So put the lid back over your enchanted rose, and prepare to belt out some tunes: it’s time to eat. Red Rose Taverne Overlay The lunch and dinner menu at Red Rose Taverne has seen a few changes since our first visit over two years ago. The Forbidden Beast’s Burger was added when the Beast’s Burger (apparently not forbidden) was removed. And while the Slow-Cooked Beef Poutine has remained on the menu throughout, the flatbread version of this poutine was removed. Red Rose Taverne Lunch & Dinner Menu We tried two of the original menu items and Beast’s Forbidden Burger (because we like to live life on the edge!). And we had some Grey Stuff Gateau because it’s the law. Entrees (and dessert) at Red Rose Taverne The Garden Mozzarella Flatbread is a long-time resident of the Taverne’s menu, and we weren’t wowed by it when we tried it the first time. It came out cold back when the restaurant first opened, and that was off-putting. This time it was still warm, and the freshness came through. Garden Mozzarella Flatbread Essentially this is caprese salad on a flatbread, so if you like that and want something that feels fairly light (cheese not withstanding) for an entree, this might work for you! Garden Mozzarella Flatbread Beast’s Forbidden Burger had a lot more flavor than the flatbread, and we really enjoyed it! First, let’s just take a moment for those Pommes Frites. They’re topped with a little garlic and parsley, and they were a great addition to the dish! Beast’s Forbidden Burger The burger itself is protein-heavy, with wagyu (!!!) beef steak on top of an Angus Beef patty! Béarnaise Aïoli, Roasted Onions, and Pickled Peppers finish out the toppings. It’s all served on a sturdy toasted bun that manages to wrangle the components. Beast’s Forbidden Burger Overall, we liked this! The steak was unfortunately a bit tough, but the flavors carried through, and we enjoyed those. It’s a good quick service burger. But we are very sad to see wagyu beef that isn’t the star of the show. Beast’s Forbidden Burger The Slow-Cooked Beef Poutine was the biggest hit of the three, with thick-cut waffle fries loaded with beef, gravy, herbacious cheese curds, and pickled onions. Slow Cooked Beef Poutine The toppings are the real stars here. Traditionally brown gravy and cheese curds are included in poutine, so we’re happy that the tradition stands in that respect. The herb-dressed cheese curds are a great interpretation, and the beef and gravy were savory and filling. Those pickled onions, though! What a refreshing contrast to the heavier components! Slow Cooked Beef Poutine Beneath the toppings, the waffle fries were strong enough to handle the toppings, and it ate well as a result. Very satisfying dish. Slow Cooked Beef Poutine Whether you enjoy a meal at Red Rose Taverne or not, stopping in for the Grey Stuff Gateau is a must. This is a shortbread round topped with a bit of red velvet cake that’s encased in swirls of cookies-and-cream mousse. It’s not expressly identical to Magic Kingdom’s Grey Stuff, but it’s delicious. (No, that reference is not played out.) Grey Stuff Gateau This is a fun treat that brings a smile simply for its beloved celebration in the movie, and thankfully, it’s also yummy! Grey Stuff Gateau Here’s a peek into the interior of the Grey Stuff Gateau from our first visit. You can see it’s really mostly mousse with a little bit of cake and raspberries, and we’re fine with that! The Grey Stuff — Inside Red Rose Taverne is the fun little overlay that could, and we’re glad the limited menu still features a good variety of dishes, including the vegan-friendly Enchanted Cauli-Flower Sandwich. Cauliflower Sandwich And we’ll be back because, well, we’re enchanted. And also hungry. But mostly enchanted. Check out more Disneyland Food Reviews Here!! 7. In our Disney Doodles series, Disney artists take turns imagining what different Disney characters would do or see first if they had the chance to visit a Disney park. In today’s Doodle, artist Evan Peltier images what Donald and Daisy Duck would do with some free time on a Disney Cruise Line ship. “Here, Donald is taking a picture of his lovely Daisy in front of the Disney Cruise Line photo spot!” Evan said. 8. Today is World Oceans Day! A time where people around the world celebrate the ocean, its importance in our lives, and how each of us can protect it no matter where we live. In honor of today, we proudly highlight the work of Disney Science Operations Manager Dr. Andy Stamper. He focuses on the wellbeing of oceans and marine life around the globe. In partnership with Disney Cruise Line and The Disney Conservation Fund, Dr. Stamper is leading a multi-year project to rehabilitate coral reefs in The Bahamas. Dr. Stamper, alongside a team of Cast and Crew Members, was the first in The Bahamas to implement coral nurseries. And as a result, they’re able to study the impacts on reefs as well as successfully grow and transplant new corals. One of the issues endangering coral reefs is the overgrowth of algae, preventing new coral to grow. Dr. Stamper and his team work together to relocate long-spine sea urchins native to the area to nearby coral reefs endangered by algae growth. The sea urchins graze on algae similar to how a lawnmower cuts grass, allowing new coral to grow. Take a look at this video for a deeper look. Since this program first started in 2007, the team regularly shares their knowledge with other Bahamian organizations – expanding coral reef rehab and environmental education efforts throughout The Bahamas. This coral reef restoration project in The Bahamas is just one of many ways The Walt Disney Company is supporting environmental efforts around the world. The Disney Conservation Fund has provided nearly $13 million to marine conservation programs spanning every ocean across the globe, including more than 70 grants to help protect coral reefs. Disney Cruise Line is also committed to minimizing our impact on the environment. Most recently we announced the elimination of plastic straws, cutlery, stirrers, shopping bags and condiment packets in an effort to significantly reduce the amount of single-use plastic onboard. You can learn more about Disney Cruise Line environmental efforts here. View the full article
  9. The new live-action Lion King film will be coming to theatres on July 19th…which is insanely soon since I feel as if I have waited for this moment for my entire life. And this year also happens to be the 25th Anniversary of the classic Lion King film. Lion King Drum Bucket So, you know what that means…Lion King stuff is popping up EVERYWHERE. We’ve seen Lion King treats, merchandise, and even a new show popping up between the two coasts for a while now. And today…we found another really cool item! Thanks to our good Disneyland friend Heather Sievers (@DininginDisney), we noticed that the new Lion King Drum Bucket had made its way to Disney California Adventure. Lion King Drum Buckets Although Disney advertised this as a novelty popcorn bucket, we found it serving cotton candy inside! The Lion King Drum Bucket features a few really intricate carvings — including one of a lion of course. Lion King Drum Bucket The back features a sunburst. And both sides are made to look like actual wood…which actually makes me love it. Lion King Drum Bucket The super colorful and fun lanyard has both the sun and lion on it! Lion King Drum Bucket Lanyard We found these at an outdoor vending location in Disney California Adventure, although Disney has announced that it will be making its way to Animal Kingdom along with a ton of other Animal Kingdom treats (many of which we’ve already tried) soon! Check those out here. You can get your very own drum bucket for $18.99 — while supplies last, of course! Also, make sure you check out the new Lion King show that made its way to DCA today! 10. The Polite Pig is a modern BBQ joint in Walt Disney World’s Disney Springs. Its proprietors are local celebrities of the food scene in central Florida, but my visits haven’t been universally excellent despite the Pig’s positive reception in Disney springs. The Polite Pig But The Polite Pig is more than just smoked meats. On my recent visit, I went for some of the Market Sides and Shareables (a/k/a appetizers). Oh and did we mention that Polite Pig has a BOURBON BAR!? So fun for grown-ups looking to drink around Disney Springs! Bourbon Bar Menu If you do come for the bourbon, you might also stay for the food. In addition to Shareables and Market Sides, The Polite Pig offers Salads (with loads of options to add meats), Sandwiches, items From the Smoker, and Desserts. Menu Screens over the registers illuminate these options, too. (Click to enlarge for those menu descriptions!) Polite Pig Menu Screens So let’s dive into my choices! The Polite Rub Chicken Wings are a dry-rubbed chicken wing that’s deep fried until all those edges are turned into crispy bits. The meat is a little dry, but the flavor is salty and slightly spicy; and with the satisfying crispiness, these are pretty good! The wings are from the Shareables portion of the menu, and they’d be a great item to… share before digging into entrees. But if you also order a Market Side, these would suffice as a meal, too! (The wings come with pickled carrots, but I passed on those.) Polite Rub Chicken Wings The next Shareable dish I ordered was new back in February (see our first review of them here!), and I had to get them again. Burnt Ends BBQ Meatballs with cheddar grits and Layla’s Sweet BBQ Sauce. I’m not actually sure which word I like most in the title of this dish. Burnt Ends BBQ Meatballs The sweet BBQ sauce is a great accompaniment to those crispy onions and creamy (yes, really!) grits. But the star — as it should be — is the burnt ends meatballs. Burnt Ends BBQ Meatballs This is The Polite Pig’s brisket ends ground up and formed into meatballs. These are legit super awesome. The flavor was all there, and I’m never going to pass on a good barbecue sauce. Burnt Ends BBQ Meatballs The Market Sides at The Polite Pig are plentiful. On our very first visit to The Polite Pig, we tried the super fancy BBQ Cauliflower and Crispy Brussel Sprouts! (You have to read our first review here!) While these were fine, they’re still not crave-worthy in our opinion. So on my recent visit it was time to try two new-to-me options as well as give an older option another try. Market Sides On this visit, I tried the Grilled Street Corn. This… is not your average corn on the cob. It’s coated in Chipotle Aioli and covered in Seasoned Breadcrumbs. There is NOTHING WRONG HERE, my friends. I love me some elote, and this was excellent. Grilled Street Corn These are a little messy to eat due to all that tasty aioli, but they’re worth the extra napkins. Get it. Grilled Street Corn The Mac and Cheese at The Polite Pig has seen some changes over the past couple of years. On our first visit, it was comprised of three cheeses: Parmesan, cheddar, and cottage. But in my opinion, it was still dry and somewhat flavorless. Mac and Cheese The Mac and Cheese is now described as using Aged Cheddar, and it’s actually a much better flavor and texture (gooier!) than before. Though it still needs a bit of salt. Mac and Cheese The BBQ Waffle Fries are a thick waffle fry dusted with Polite Rub. The slightly spicy rub imparts good flavor, and it would be fun to dip these in the many Polite Pig sauces (see those sauces here!), but they aren’t a must. Especially if you’re interested in some of the less common sides. BBQ Waffle Fries On this visit, I didn’t opt for dessert, but if you do, I have three words for you: Buttermilk Chess Pie. I also have one link for you: this one, where you’ll find our review of this totally killer dessert! Buttermilk Pie !!!! Oh, and don’t forget your Gideon’s Bake Shop cookie…if you get there early enough to snag one before they sell out! There’s no question that Disney Springs is a very difficult place to decide where to eat. There are table service and quick service options galore, and so many of them are really good. The Polite Pig still ranks in the middle for me. It’s fine, but I’m still not in a rush to get back there (except for that elote and pie!). But if you’re into this style of modern BBQ, you’ll absolutely want to give it a try. I’ll be back for (believe it or not) more veggies! Have you given The Polite Pig a try? 17. Pacific Wharf Cafe in Disney California Adventure is a great spot to stop if you’re in the mood for a good soup or salad. We love their soups served in bread bowls and their Chicken Apple & Walnut Salad. Pacific Wharf Cafe It also happens to be one of our favorite quick service joints in the park because they continue to impress us time and time again. And on our latest visit we were blown away once more with the newest seasonal offering. Pacific Wharf often has bread puddings as a seasonal option. And when they do, we are THERE. And their current bread pudding is GOOD, y’all… like, really good. Seasonal Bread Pudding This Lemon and Wild Blueberry Bread Pudding is served warm. It’s served with a lemon crème anglaise and is filled with lemon cream cheese (!!!). To further up the ante, it’s topped with whipped cream, blueberries, and a bit of mint. Pacific Wharf Cafe Seasonal Bread Pudding We loved this pudding because we felt that it was a wonderful balance of tart and sweet, while the flavors still blended together well. The fact that it is served warm really took it over the edge for us. Seasonal Bread Pudding The seasonal bread pudding from Pacific Wharf Cafe is $5.39 (before you use that Annual Passholder Discount, of course). 21. An all-new, original outdoor musical theater production, “Tale of the Lion King,” debuts today at Disney California Adventure park. This new stage show celebrates the characters and music of Disney’s “The Lion King” in an imaginative and unique way. The lead narrator, Mwongozo (Swahili for “guide”) leads a troupe of 18 performers called the Storytellers of the Pride Lands in this adaptation. The performance is presented in a contemporary story-theater style that retells the tale through language, song and dance. “The approach that we’ve taken with ‘Tale of the Lion King’ is that this is a story that was passed on from generation to generation, and now it’s come here to Disney California Adventure park,” said Susana Tubert, Creative Director, Disney Parks Live Entertainment. “The Storytellers of the Pride Lands have come to share this ancestral story of how a cub became a king.” Enjoy new musical arrangements of favorite songs, including “Circle of Life,” “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” and “Hakuna Matata,” among others. The live drumming and singing, along with the set and costumes all celebrate the cultural roots of this beloved Disney story. Check out our first peek below! For a look at bringing this production to life, watch out our behind-the-scenes peek here. 25. Say “Cheers!” with a COOKIE (or two) with the brand new Frozcato Sugar Cookie Sandwich from The Basket at Wine Bar George in Disney Springs! Frozcato Sugar Cookie Sandwich This new treat is made with the Wine Bar’s Dole Whip Frozcato blend of pineapple, moscato, and vodka turned into a soft-serve treat tucked in between two sugar cookies and covered in pretty candy garnishes. Frozcato Sugar Cookie Sandwich The cookies are reminiscent of the Rosé Cookies at Wine Bar George in that they’re nice and chewy. And in this case, the sugar cookies are strong enough to withstand the treat and not break apart. Frozcato Sugar Cookie Sandwich The Frozcato portion maintains its pronounced pineapple flavor, but you can’t pick up on the taste of alcohol as much when paired with the cookie and in this soft-serve form (as opposed to the Dole Whip Frozcato’s regular slush).
