  1. As part of the celebration of the upcoming live-action film, The Lion King, Disney has launched “a global campaign to raise awareness of the crisis facing lions.” Special Edition Simba and Nala Plush Disney shares that the campaign supports “the Lion Recovery Fund and its partners to help advance conservation across Africa, including the goal to double the number of lions in the wild by 2050.” As part of the efforts, two new Special Edition plush are newly available in Disney’s Animal Kingdom. And for each plush sold, Disney will donate $5.00 to the Wildlife Conservation Network in support of the Lion Recovery Fund (and its local partners). Special Edition Simba and Nala Plush sign 40,000 of the plush will ultimately be available in both Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort. Guests can find the plush now at Mombasa, Island Mercantile, and Discovery Trading Company at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, and at Seaside Souvenirs at Disney’s California Adventure park. Nala Plush Starting July 1st, the plush will also be sold in World of Disney, Elias & Co. and Bazaar at Disneyland Resort and in the Emporium, Mouse Gear, World of Disney and more locations at Walt Disney World Resort. Simba Plush Simba Plush Additionally, at www.disney.com/LionKingProtectThePride, Disney has announced that for every guest who rides the Kilimanjaro Safaris attraction in Animal Kingdom from July 19 – 25, 2019 (the opening week of “The Lion King”), the Disney Conservation Fund will donate $2.00 (up to $350,000) to the Lion Recovery Fund’s efforts. You can learn more about these and other efforts by visiting www.disney.com/LionKingProtectThePride. Kilimanjaro Safari sign Disney shares: “Wildlife Conservation Network’s Lion Recovery Fund supports a variety of organizations working across Africa to benefit people, wildlife and habitats. We also had the opportunity to take a ride on Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run and to build our very own droid at Droid Depot. Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in Disneyland Now, we are turning our attention to the opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Walt Disney World, which will open on August 29th. But friends, Disney just announced something HUGE for select Disney World Annual Passholders! Disney has revealed that “Platinum, Platinum Plus and Premier Annual Passholders will be among the first to experience Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, with special preview opportunities planned before the land’s opening on Aug. 29.” Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in Disneyland This is a MAJOR deal since the crowds at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge are expected to be massive. This will give select Annual Passholders the opportunity to not only see the land before everyone else, but they will likely be able to do so with shorter waits and fewer people. 4. It’s time for some chocolate — with a twist! — in Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Tiger Tail Chocolate Twist And I mean that quite literally, as we’re checking out the Tiger Tail Chocolate Twist at Isle of Java on Discovery Island! Isle of Java menu The Tiger Tail ($4.99 or a Disney Dining Plan snack credit) is Animal Kingdom’s answer to the popular Cheshire Cat Tail over at Cheshire Café in Magic Kingdom’s Fantasyland. Tiger Tail Chocolate Twist It takes your regular chocolate twist and adds some colorful icing to reflect the cat in tribute. In this case, added orange icing makes up the Tiger Tail! Tiger Tail Chocolate Twist There is actually no flavor variation from the Tiger Tail’s orange icing to the Cheshire Cat Tail’s pink and purple (which is a little unfortunate, as it might have been fun to have a bit of a taste difference). That said, the Tiger Tail still remains a chocolate lover’s treat, as the buttery, light and flaky pastry twist is positively packed with chocolate bits in addition to the chocolate icing on top! Tiger Tail Chocolate Twist By the way, for adults… we can highly recommend pairing the Tiger Tail with an Irish Coffee, also found at Isle of Java! For $10.75, Joffrey’s Coffee has the addition of Proper Twelve Irish Whiskey and is topped with whipped cream. Irish Coffee Not a bad combo to enjoy during a rainy day (like the one we’re having today) or ANY day in Disney’s Animal Kingdom! Check out more Animal Kingdom snacks in our DFB YouTube Video! 13. It’s about that time, folks: the heat of summer is rolling in. Here at the DFB that means finding lots of tasty little frozen drinks to keep us cool while we’re hustling from ride to ride. In Disneyland’s Frontierland, Rancho Del Zocalo has a fruity drink with a floral twist: the Jamaica Freeze! Jamaica Freeze There’s no clear description of this drink on the menu placard or online, but we had to give it a sip. Look at that color! How could it not be delicious? Jamaica Freeze At $5.99, this is a pretty typically-priced specialty beverage, and it’s a sizable pour. It’s share-able if you’re looking to enjoy a snack (or two) as well. Jamaica Freeze So the flavor: we got a lot of dark cherry, with sweet and tart notes. Overall, it was lovely to drink and delivered on flavor. Whether it’s Jamaican-influenced, well, that’s debatable. Jamaica Freeze The most tropical part of the drink is the candied hibiscus flower on top, which isn’t very nice to look at. Jamaica Freeze Not only does it look… strange… it also wasn’t pleasant to eat. The floral flavor was too pronounced, and the candied aspect didn’t cut it enough. Jamaica Freeze The hibiscus might work for some, and the Jamaica Freeze itself was delicious, so we say give this one a try if you’re sweating it out in Frontierland this summer! 15. It goes without saying that the Walt Disney Company is one of the most widely recognized corporations on the planet, and the Company’s theme parks are cornerstones of the entertainment giant’s brand. Walt Disney Company Logo But of the Company’s six parks, how many are actually owned and operated by the Walt Disney Company? The answer: only SOME of the Disney Theme Parks around the world are exclusively Disney owned and operated. So, it’s Disney…but NOT Disney? We’ll break it down for you. Disneyland Resort Walt’s park is, indeed, 100% Walt Disney Company-owned today. Although when the Park was constructed, Walt himself only owned 16.55% of the shares while the Walt Disney Company partnered with two other companies to compile funding for the project. By 1960, though, the Company bought out its partners; and by 1988 the Company had complete ownership — including the final 1988 acquisition of Disneyland Hotel which had, until that point, been owned by Jack Wrather. What’s the most expensive meal in Disneyland? Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea The Tokyo Parks — Disney’s first in Asia — are owned and operated 100% by Oriental Land Company. That’s right: Disney has no ownership of Tokyo Disneyland or DisneySea. Oriental Land Company itself is owned by a handful of Japanese companies, and the Resort pays a licensing fee to Disney for both characters and names. But despite that international ownership, Disney Imagineers still design the Parks’ attractions, and Disney keeps employees on property to maintain standards. Tokyo DisneySea Chandu Tail Walt Disney World This is the second Park the Walt Disney Company fully owns, but even this deal wasn’t entirely Disney-owned and -built in the very beginning. The Resort’s first two hotels — Disney’s Contemporary Resort and Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort — were built by U.S. Steel and bought out under the leadership of Roy Disney in 1971. Contemporary Resort Of course, the Company’s ownership and control in Walt Disney World goes even further, as the Florida legislature approved the Reedy Creek Improvement District and essentially allows the Company full control over planning and development on its property. You can see all the details on the Reedy Creek Improvement District in this video! Disneyland Paris Disneyland Paris has seen its share of ups and downs over the past 27 years, and to this day it remains the only Disney Park in Europe. And up until 2017, Disney shared ownership of the park with Kingdom Holding Company (whose founder and chairman is Saudi Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal), which owned 23.3% of Disneyland Paris. In 2017, the Walt Disney Company bought out enough shares of the stock to force a mandatory buy-out and took over 100% ownership. Through the transition, Disneyland Paris continued to be operated by Euro Disney S.C.A., a subsidiary of the Walt Disney Company. Disneyland Paris Hong Kong Disneyland This Disney Park is owned as a partnership between the Walt Disney Company and the government of Hong Kong, where Disney owns 47% and the government 53%. The partnership even has a name: Hongkong International Theme Parks Limited. While Disney is a minority shareholder, the Company does directly oversee operations at the Park. Marvel Expansion Coming to Hong Kong Disneyland Shanghai Disneyland Similar to the Hong Kong property, Shanghai Disneyland is owned by a partnership between the Walt Disney Company and the government of China. This partnership is called Shanghai Shendi Group. In this case, Disney owns 43% and China 57%. Park operations are tasked to a management company that is 70% owned by Disney. Zootopia Shanghai Concept Art ©Disney So, interestingly, many of the Disney parks aren’t entirely DISNEY parks! But from the development expected in Parks around the globe, one thing is clear (even if ownership isn’t): the demand for magic remains high. 23. Red Rose Taverne in Disneyland’s Fantasyland is the little overlay that could. Back in 2017, Disneyland Park reimagined its historic Village Haus as part of the company’s celebration of the release of the live-action Beauty and the Beast. But the last petal still hasn’t fallen, and Red Rose Taverne appears to be a sticking around indefinitely. Red Rose Taverne So when we’re in Disneyland, we always pop by to see what’s cookin’ in this poor, provincial town, and recently we discovered a couple new breakfast dishes we had to try. Both have the opportunity to enchant the diner — but will they be… wait for it… delicious? Breakfast at Red Rose Taverne The Beast’s Breakfast Burger and the Stuffed French Toast are essentially polar opposites — fitting, of course, for the story of Belle and the Beast. Stuffed French Toast and Breakfast Burger The Beast’s Breakfast Burger is a hearty, 1/3 Angus patty topped with rosemary-maple cream cheese, bacon, and scrambled eggs. That’s three types of protein in one bite — ideal for a carnivorous Beast. Beast’s Breakfast Burger This is a substantial burger and more than enough food for one (unless that one happens to be, you know, the Beast himself), and it was a decent (though unfortunately dry) quick service burger. The rosemary-maple cream cheese is the surprise element in this and adds a hint of sweetness and freshness. Beast’s Breakfast Burger If you prefer to start your day with a hit of sugar and a slab of carbs, the Stuffed French Toast will be more your speed. This breakfast is sweet on top of sweet — with a side of bacon. Stuffed French Toast The filling between two pieces of French toast is sweetened cream cheese, and combined with the berry compote on top, there’s more than enough sugar to get you fired up for your first ride of the day. Let’s just say: it comes with a side of maple syrup, but you don’t need it. Stuffed French Toast Look, Red Rose Taverne doesn’t appear to be going anywhere, but we’re still kids at heart who can sing “Be Our Guest” at any moment, so we are here for the overlay, as long as it stays. And the breakfast here (which was hit-or-miss on our first visit back in the day) is okay! You’re not expecting French perfection from a quick service spot, but you’ll be full, some of the flavors are interesting, and you’re smack dab in the heart of Fantasyland so you can dance your way to your next attraction easily. We say: every day like the one before isn’t so bad at Red Rose Taverne. Check out more Disneyland Food Reviews Here!! Join the DFB Newsletter to get all the breaking news right in your inbox!
