  1. Halloween Time is in full swing at the Disneyland Resort, and it seems that predictions about all the fun and spookiness have been true … namely those made by famous fortune teller, Ivana Mystic. Ivana has been appearing at the Halloween Carnival in the Big Thunder Ranch Jamboree area of Disneyland park, and I stopped by earlier in the season to find out what she predicted to be in store this year. Was she correct in her predictions for Halloween Time at the Disneyland Resort? Come see for yourself, now through October 31! 4. Disney’s Animal Kingdom is full of excitement, updates and changes! Even some of the animals are in on the excitement, including two cotton-top tamarins, Gemma and Draco, who just moved into a new home. Gemma, a female tamarin, has been delighting guests at Rafiki’s Planet Watch since December 2000 where she was voted “best personality” by her keepers. In March 2011, she moved to Discovery Island to debut the remodeled tamarin island in front of the Tree of Life. This week she was joined by Draco for her second grand opening in a brand new exhibit which will bring their world even closer to guests. Draco, a male tamarin, has spent most of his life with his parents and five siblings in an indoor exhibit at the Milwaukee County Zoo. He joined us at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in August. His debut will mark the first time he has experienced an outdoor exhibit! He has already been observed chasing lizards in his backstage area. Since his arrival, Draco also has spent time becoming acquainted with his new mate, Gemma. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ (AZA) identified the pair as potential mates within its Species Survival Plan (SSP). The SSP works to ensure long-term survival of species by helping AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums manage species’ genetic diversity through detailed records of individual animals. Through the efforts of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ SSP, more than 300 cotton-top tamarins are cooperatively managed in more than 80 U.S. zoos. Over the past few weeks, Gemma and Draco have shown great interest in each other, and we believe they will be happy and successful mates. While Gemma and Draco finish acclimating and comfortably settle into their new home over the next few weeks, their job as animal ambassadors is just beginning! The cotton-top tamarin is one of the most endangered primates in the world. A 2008 census conducted by our partners at Proyecto Tití in Colombia concluded that only 7,500 cotton-tops remained in the wild, and the population has been severely impacted by habitat destruction throughout its range in Colombia. This information prompted the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Primate Specialist Group to recommend changing the classification of cotton-top tamarins from Endangered to Critically Endangered in 2008. Since then, Proyecto Tití increased their public outreach and education programs, stopped the development of a proposed airport, and secured two new protected areas for cotton-top tamarins and other wildlife to live safely in Colombia. The impact of the work is beginning to pay off, as we find communities are embracing conservation efforts and the population of cotton-tops appears stable! One outreach program has taught women to crochet using plastic bags like the ones we bring home from the grocery store. (What a great way to recycle and keep trash out of the forest!) They make beautiful, colorful tote bags called ‘eco-mochilas’. These unique and environmentally friendly totes are sold locally in Colombia, online, and at Rafiki’s Planet Watch at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Purchasing an eco-mochila helps communities in Colombia earn money for their families and protect forests that the cotton-top tamarins call home. Don’t miss next week’s Wildlife Wednesday post to see Gemma and Draco in their new home, learn more about cotton-top conservation work and how education programs beginning in younger generations are positively affecting communities in Colombia. Until then, check out the video below to see some of the conservation work Proyecto Tití has already accomplished! 6. Earlier this month, my family visited from Wisconsin. We spent a long weekend in the parks, so in order to have energy to play all day we had to fuel up in the mornings. I’d like to share a few of my favorites with you. If you are looking to try something new, Flying Fish Café at Disney’s BoardWalk is serving up breakfast until the new Trattoria al Forno opens (and dishes up some tasty breakfast eats). My favorite item on the menu is the waffle topped with tiramisu mascarpone—a must-try for any coffee lover. If you’re looking for something savory, I recommend the frittata with roasted red peppers, prosciutto, onions and potatoes topped with Pecorino Romano cheese. I love Minnie, so I’ll take every chance I can get to dine with my favorite mouse. One of the best places to catch Minnie—along with a couple of her beach pals—is at the Beach Club Breakfast Buffet at Cape May Cafe at Disney’s Beach Club Resort. It’s a great place to load up on Mickey waffles, too. Want to spend your day feeling practically perfect in every way? The Supercalifragilistic Breakfast at 1900 Park Fare is for you. From the famous strawberry soup to other signature items like lobster benedict and smoked salmon lox—this buffet has something for everyone. Some of your favorite storybook characters will even stop by while you enjoy breakfast. My family stayed at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, the home of one of my favorite restaurants at Walt Disney World Resort — Boma – Flavors of Africa. Traditional breakfast favorites like pancakes and omelets are accompanied by the gooey French toast bread pudding and items inspired by traditional African foods like turkey bobotie. Say ‘Aloha!’ to Tonga Toast from Kona Café at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort. One of my all-time favorites, this banana-stuffed sourdough French toast is rolled in cinnamon sugar and served with strawberry compote. Really hungry? Try the Big Kahuna, which consists of French toast, pancakes topped with pineapple sauce and macadamia nut butter, eggs, home-fried potatoes, ham, bacon, and sausage. Just thinking about all these breakfast options makes me hungry! What’s your favorite way to fuel up before a day at the parks? 7. When you hear the familiar harmony of the world-famous Dapper Dans, you instantly know you’re at a Disney Park on Main Street, U.S.A., right? That’s why if you were in Dallas’ Love Field early Monday morning, you might have been puzzled to hear the barbershop quartet’s tunes echoing through the airport terminal. Walt Disney World Resort joined with Southwest Airlines to help celebrate the addition of the airline’s first non-stop route from Dallas’ Love Field to Orlando International Airport. GalleryThe Heart of Southwest Airlines Combines with the Magic of Walt Disney World Resort for an Unforgettable Flight view allPrior to boarding, passengers were able to commemorate the flight by posing in front of backdrop of Cinderella Castle that served as a “Disney Side” family photo opportunity. Then, the Dapper Dans began singing a selection of tunes from their harmonious repertoire. The quartet even debuted its new arrangement of “Let It Go.” Aboard Flight #887, passengers listened as Jungle Cruise Skipper “Jungle Jane” made flight announcements in the attraction’s famous style of humor. (And it is true: when the plane flew through a passing shower, passengers saw the backside of water.) Mouse Ears and Mickey Mouse-shaped treats were given to passengers, as well as complimentary tickets to Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party that evening in the Magic Kingdom. As the plane continued to Orlando International Airport, The Dapper Dans roamed the aisle of the airplane, providing one-of-a-kind, in-flight entertainment. Take a look at this gallery of photos provided by Disney Parks photographer Ryan Wendler, as well as this video with host John Graham. 8. As a cast member at the Disneyland Resort, it’s rewarding to walk the property and see our guests enjoying our parks and hotels. It’s a testament to our founder, Walt Disney, who dreamed of a place that will always be bursting with happiness and imagination. It’s a tribute to our Imagineers who created and built a place filled with incredible experiences and adventures. And it’s an accolade to our cast members who deliver the magic each day and are dedicated to making lifelong memories for our guests. Walking the resort last Sunday morning, I felt even more proud. That morning, the Disneyland Resort was full of children and families walking in support of CHOC Children’s. By 6 a.m., nearly 15,000 people lined Main Street, U.S.A. … spilling out of the turnstiles and filling the Esplanade and a good portion of the Downtown Disney District. This is the 13th year that Disneyland Resort has hosted the annual CHOC Walk in the Park, and it keeps getting better. The route through both parks and the Downtown Disney District was peppered with character encounters, music and entertainment, all of which encouraged the boundless energy of the families and volunteers. It is very clear just how much CHOC Children’s means to our community. I’m so proud of the work that CHOC Children’s has done over the past 50 years. I’m equally proud that the Disneyland Resort supported CHOC Children’s even before the hospital opened. Walt Disney was more than just the creator of Disneyland. He was instrumental in the founding of CHOC Children’s, leaving a legacy of compassion and a tradition of community support that still exists today. I want to give a special thanks to my fellow cast members who came out by the hundreds to walk for this wonderful cause, as well as those who supported CHOC Children’s in other ways. I also want to recognize a fast-growing team of walkers made up of Disneyland Resort annual passholders. In just a few years, they have become the largest team of walkers in the entire event, raising more than $90,000 this year. Finally, as a board member of CHOC Hospital, I want to thank all of you who took part in this year’s event. Because of your generosity, CHOC Children’s was able to raise more than $2 million this year. If you weren’t able to join us, you can still show your support for CHOC Children’s by going to www.chocwalk.org to make a donation. 9. If you’ve visited any Quick Service restaurants in Hollywood Studios, you’ve likely encountered a few standard dessert options, in addition to some pretty spectacular cupcakes. Learn About: Studio Catering Co.Disney's Hollywood Studios Disney World RestaurantsRegular options include Chocolate Mousse and No-Sugar-Added Strawberry Parfait, or Vanilla Cake with Chocolate Custard and Banana Parfait. These are often part of the dessert options to include with your Quick Service Meal on the Disney Dining Plan (and, of course, can be purchased on their own as well). I stopped by Studio Catering Co. where the desserts include the Banana Parfait and Vanilla Cake with Chocolate Custard. You can also find these at Rosie’s All-American Cafe, Catalina Eddie’s, and Fairfax Fare. Let’s dig in so you can decide how you’d most prefer to use that dessert option! (Note that these are also available at Fairfax Fare!) Studio Catering Co. Studio Catering Co. Before placing my order, I couldn’t help but admire the cheerful chalk art on the concrete floor. Chalk art! Chalk art! As you can see, both the Banana Parfait and the Vanilla Cake with Chocolate Custard are part of the “in-a-glass” series of snacks. Banana Parfait and Vanilla Cake with Chocolate Custard That’s not an official series, by the way… that’s just what I’m calling it . You may be familiar with the Cheesecake in a Glass over at Animal Kingdom. The Banana Parfait is a banana pudding over a crushed graham cracker bottom. The pudding is sprinkled with chocolate-covered toffee bits. Banana Parfait Top of Banana Parfait My immediate thought upon first bite? “Wow… that sure is Banana-y!” I know… go figure, right? But there really are no other words for it. There aren’t actual bananas in the parfait — only the banana-flavored pudding. First bite of Banana Parfait I like banana-flavored things, so the fact that the flavor is strong is fine with me (and toffee-bits never hurt anything, either!), but this might not be everyone’s cup of tea… or glass of banana pudding . The Vanilla Cake with Chocolate Custard offers three distinct flavors and textures: chocolate cookie crumbles on top, chocolate custard in the middle, and the vanilla cake base. Vanilla Cake with Chocolate Custard Layers of Cookie crumbles, Custard, and Cake I’d hoped the cookie crumbles would lend some more flavor to the fairly ordinary base, but unfortunately that wasn’t the case. The entire thing was rather bland overall. Also, the moisture of the pudding seeped into the cake, making the cake very soggy. Bite of Custard with Cake Soggy cake just doesn’t sit well with me. Nothing about this one worked, unfortunately. If you’re looking at this from an out-of-pocket perspective, I’d put my four bucks and nineteen cents towards something else, due to the small portion size of these desserts. I still say what Hollywood Studios does best in the way of dessert is cupcakes. However, those cupcakes are enormous and some may find them too large on top of a full meal. So, while I wouldn’t recommend the Vanilla Cake, I do like the Banana Parfait as a dessert option with a Quick Service meal at Hollywood Studios on the Dining Plan. It can be a nice little something sweet after polishing off your Spicy Buffalo Chicken sandwich… or whatever else strikes your fancy at Studio Catering Co.! 13. One meal on our ships and you’ll find why everyone raves about the food on a Disney cruise. But it’s more than just the high quality of our dishes that cruisers are talking about. It’s also our level of service and the variety of options we offer that set our dining apart. Eating on a Disney cruise is amazing no matter what, but there are some tips you should follow to have the best dining experience possible … Don’t be shy with your servers. Your serving team travels with you to a different restaurant each night, and to serve you best, they need to know you well. Share with them your likes and dislikes so they can make recommendations suited to your personal tastes. Order outside the box. Our chefs travel the world to develop new menu items so you can taste cuisines you may have never tried before. Unlike your servers, the menus change nightly, so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to “test the waters,” so to speak, and tastes dishes you don’t typically eat at home. Spoil yourself with an adult-only fine dining night at Palo or Remy. Trust me, your taste buds will never be the same after you dine at either of these upscale restaurants. The modern Italian cuisine at Palo and the French-inspired cuisine at Remy are truly unforgettable. Take advantage of “Dine and Play.” It’s a parent’s dream come true. Offered during the second seating, your kids’ meals will be served first and then our youth counselors will come pick them up so you can enjoy a peaceful and leisurely meal with just the grownups. Satisfy your cravings at any time of the day with room service. Available 24/7, there’s no up-charge to have food delivered to your stateroom. One of my favorite midnight snacks is a Mickey ice cream bar with a cold glass of milk. Indulge in a one-of-a-kind themed buffet. Join the party at our special buffets, like the late-night one after the Pirates IN the Caribbean party where you can re-energize after a swashbuckling night of dancing and partying. In Alaska, don’t miss the midday barbecue feast of wild Alaskan salmon and other special seafood dishes out on the open-air deck while the ship sails through the breathtaking Tracy Arm Fjord. 14. Halloween Time at Disneyland is most certainly my favorite time of the year. The decor, the ride overlays, the merchandise, and the FOOD! I always look forward to trying out new holiday offerings, but this one I was a little nervous about because I don’t really have fond memories of eating at Tomorrowland Terrace. It’s been a really long time since I’ve eaten here and I’m happy to report that I did have a pleasant experience. In fact, in the near future, we should probably feature a full review of this counter service eatery here on the blog. I’ll put it on my “to do” list. For now though, let’s take a look at the Monster U “Style” Burger and Fries meal that they’re featuring through October 31st. Halloween Time Monster U Style Burger Signage The Cheeseburger comes topped with Burger Sauce, Lettuce, Tomato, Pickles, and Grilled Onions. It’s served with a side of french fries covered in Parmesan Ooze. Monster U Style Burger with Fries The burger itself was nothing special. It wasn’t amazing, but it definitely wasn’t awful. Really your standard burger with a bit more flavor due to the added grilled onions. The ingredients were fresh; the lettuce and pickles were crisp, and the tomato was chilled. The cheese however could have been a bit more melted. The bun was soft and featured oats on top. I didn’t really notice a distinct flavor coming from the “burger sauce.” It seemed like your basic Thousand Island type dressing. Monster U Burger Close Up The French Fries with Parmesan Ranch Ooze though, they were fabulous! The sauce is a combination of Blue and Green colored Parmesan Ranch Dressing. If you like to dip your French Fires in Ranch Dressing, you will enjoy the colorful “Ooze.” Plus… Look at it! It’s so pretty! French Fries with Parmesan Ranch Ooze Overall, I say the Monster U “Style” Burger is worth a try. The price point is fair for the amount of food that you get and the quality is good, too. The French Fries with Ooze are fabulous. And as an added bonus, Tomorrowland Terrace is a great spot for watching the Jedi Training Academy. So if you time it just right, you get a show with your meal! Have you tried the Monster U “Style” Burger? What did you think? How about the Ooze? Did you love it? 16. The fun is underway with Halloween Time at the Disneyland Resort – Haunted Mansion Holiday, Dia de los Muertos and the Halloween Carnival at Big Thunder Ranch Jamboree – all running through October 31, with festive food a big part of the fun through November 2. Let’s start with the squiggly, wiggly zinfandel spaghetti with roasted golden beets, pine nuts and golden raisins at Storytellers Café at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa. It looks a little fiendish, but the pasta gets its “seasonal” color from wine and it’s only available the week of Halloween. Head to Disneyland park, where Café Orleans is featuring devilishly delicious braised short ribs with purple mashed potatoes, sautéed baby carrots, red wine mushroom sauce and fried shoestring onions. Nearby, Blue Bayou serves a hearty Creole-brined, bone-in pork chop with roasted garlic Boursin mashed potatoes, sautéed baby spinach, Champagne pear coulis and tomato relish. Bewitching quick bites include pork tamales at Rancho del Zocalo Restaurante (in honor of Dia de los Muertos), and a blue cheese and onion marmalade burger at Hungry Bear Restaurant. Head to Village Haus Restaurant for Fire-Breathing Dragon Flatbread with buffalo chicken, serrano chile slices and chipotle aioli (definitely a treat, if you love hot stuff). A little more subdued is the “Munster” chicken sausage sandwich with onions, red bell peppers, mushrooms, Muenster cheese and chicken sausage on a baguette with a side of roasted purple potatoes. At French Market Restaurant, try the traditional shrimp po boy with deep-fried popcorn shrimp, lettuce, tomato, vinegar dressing and Cajun remoulade sauce on a toasted potato roll. Tomorrowland Terrace has a “Monsters U” cheeseburger with special sauce, lettuce, tomato, pickles and grilled onion – with a side of fries covered in Parmesan Ranch “Ooze.” Or check out the mac & cheese pizza at Redd Rockett’s Pizza Port – yes, it’s pizza crust with mac ‘n cheese topped with mozzarella and Romano cheeses and seasoned bread crumbs. Disney California Adventure park has some haunting hits as well: a burger or grilled chicken at Taste Pilots’ Grill topped with a “cobweb” of Swiss cheese, grilled onions and mushrooms, and the Anti-Vampire Chicken Pizza at Boardwalk Pizza & Pasta with roasted garlic sauce, marinated chicken, smoked Gouda, roasted red peppers and a tomato-spicy harissa drizzle. Today we’re sharing some of our favorite photos that you’ve captured of meals at this kitschy spot. Let’s take a look! Aunt Liz’s Golden Fried ChickenPhotographer: Travelhyper Who can resist good fried chicken? Well, Aunt Liz’s Golden Fried Chicken is some of the best we’ve had at Disney. Check out this gorgeous snap! Aunt Liz’s Golden Fried Chicken is the Tops! Finish Your Green Beans…Or Else!Photographer: Nancy RK The antics of the staff — your “cousins” — at 50s Prime Time Cafe are the stuff of Disney legends. You had better know the color of the soap if you use the restroom (FYI, it wasn’t blue anymore on my last visit!), and for heaven’s sake, keep your elbows off the table! And some scary things can happen if you don’t eat all your veggies… I Would Eat My Green Beans If I Were You . . . (My friend once had our Cousin Tommy take her fork and FEED HER the last three green beans on her plate.) 50s Boston Cream ParfaitPhotographer: Mandy Jansen Desserts at 50s Prime Time carry on the comfort food, retro vibe. We love Dad’s Sundae with all of its crazy toppings, and the Peanut Butter and Jelly Milkshake is a fan favorite! This 50s Boston Cream Parfait is striking as well, and reminds us of potluck layered desserts from childhood. (Note that this one is traded out for a Boston Cream Cupcake from time to time on the menu.) 50s Boston Cream Parfait We really appreciate all of our readers who share their great shots of Disney fun via Disney Food Blog Photo Extravaganza, our Flickr page! 19. I recently asked my fellow Disney Parks Blog author Darcy Clark to join me during a visit to the Marketplace Co-Op in Downtown Disney Marketplace at Walt Disney World Resort. As you may recall from previous stories, I’m in love with this retail location that serves as a testing space for new products, shop concepts and guest experiences. This time, Darcy and I visited the Beautifully Disney boutique to check out the latest collection featuring The Haunted Mansion. I guess it’s a good thing Darcy and I have been friends for years as you will see in this short video below. As mentioned in the video, the Beautifully Disney boutique has a small staff of trained beauty advisors who provide complimentary tips and tricks for applying the cosmetics. I was quite impressed with Laura’s expertise as I watched Darcy and her from the sidelines during the shoot. If you are unable to visit the Marketplace Co-Op, you can find select items from Beautifully Disney and other boutiques on our Disney Parks online store by visiting http://www.DisneyStore.com/MarketplaceCoOp. Last week, Gwen Stefani visited Disney California Adventure park, and Sulley caught up with Gwen and her family in Hollywood Land to scare up some special birthday cheer for not one, but two birthday girls. In addition to her own birthday celebration, Gwen’s niece, Stella, shown here with Gwen’s sons Zuma and Kingston, was also celebrating her special day. The birthday girls’ first stop? Cars Land! 25. Truth: it’s not very often that I visit Epcot’s Electric Umbrella in Future World. Learn About: Electric UmbrellaEpcot Restaurants Disney World RestaurantsFrom time to time, it’s been known to debut something unique, but other than that, the regular items don’t hold a ton of appeal when compared with so many crave-worthy hits around World Showcase. However, they’ve switched up the menu here a bit recently, so it’s time to check it out and see how the new items fare. But first, I should mention that there is potential for this to be the scene when you hit Electric Umbrella around dinner time while everyone else is tasting their way around World Showcase during the Food and Wine Festival… Electric Umbrella outdoor sign Empty outdoor seating at Electric Umbrella View of the Fountains Not bad! The last time we headed to Electric Umbrella to check out a new burger was when the Macaroni and Cheese Burger arrived on the scene. That one didn’t make the cut for the updated menu (and it definitely wasn’t my favorite). Neither did the Meatball Sub, though the fan favorite Vegetarian Flatbread remains. Now you’ll find a Sausage and Pepper Sandwich (Italian sausage, peppers, onions, and tomato, topped with Provolone cheese), and a Veggie Naan Wich (broccoli slaw and edamame topped with tofu wasabi dressing). I found the Veggie Naan Wich of interest because that brings the vegetarian options to two — which doesn’t sound very impressive until you consider that there are only five spotlight items on this menu. Electric Umbrella menu But having tried the previous version of an “Extreme” burger at the Electric Umbrella, I just had to get the final new item on the menu: the French Dip Burger. French Dip Burger Of course, it comes with fries. Fries on the side This Angus burger is topped with brisket and crispy onions, and a slice of Muenster cheese is tucked underneath the burger. French Dip Burger close up I must admit: I’m always a little hesitant about the whole meat-topped-with-even-more-meat thing, even though it often ends up being pretty delicious (cases in point: the Barbecue Slaw Dog found at Fairfax Fare and Casey’s Corner, and Sci-Fi Dine-In’s Famous All-American Picnic Burger). I entered into this new dining scenario with the same hesitation. Unlike a regular French Dip sandwich with the au jus set on the side for dipping, the brisket here is… well, already dipped . It’s drenched just enough to give it plenty of that delicious, brothy-beef flavor without making a huge mess (a small miracle, considering everything going on here). Brisket and crispy onions on top of burger The result ends up being a Disney burger that is, overall, really quite moist — and since a common complaint about burgers at Disney is that they are often dry, this is a very nice surprise. The crispy onions break up both the the texture and the flavor. I’m a huge onion fan, so believe it or not, I could’ve happily taken more of them on the top. And the Muenster cheese was a good choice here (you can finally see it under the big ol’ beef pile in the pictures below), adding just a bit of mild creamy flavor to finish everything off. French Dip Burger cross-section French Dip Burger cross-section I’m shocked to say, I didn’t find it to be overkill. In fact, I kind of loved it. For me, it’s made for sharing, but my husband said he easily could have finished it on his own. The French Dip Burger is fun, tasty, and I think this is a good addition to the choices at Electric Umbrella.
