The 2014 Epcot Food and Wine Festival is well underway, and we’re hearing from lots of you that you’re really enjoying this year’s offerings! Welcome to the Epcot Food and Wine Festival! Today, we’re taking a closer look at those little outposts of deliciousness, the Marketplace Booths found throughout World Showcase. Up to this point, we’ve focused on international flair, but this time out, let’s visit two uniquely American spots — Farm Fresh and Hops & Barley. These two spots include some of our most beloved festival offerings this year. (Get the bacon hash. Get. It.) The Farm Fresh Marketplace BoothThe Farm Fresh Marketplace Booth is sort of something old and something new at the same time. The marketplace actually debuted as Florida Local in 2012. Farm Fresh Marketplace Booth This year, Festival chefs wanted to expand the scope of the food served here. Rather than source ingredients from Florida only, they looked to showcase regional flavors. But the emphasis is still farm-to-market-fresh. 2014 Farm Fresh Marketplace Booth Menu You get the sense that they’re taking a back-to-basics approach. Dishes are homespun, but are executed with attention to detail and bold flavors. For example — the Nueske’s® Pepper Bacon Hash. This thing is just off the charts. I seriously ate it in, like, 30 seconds while I stood there like an idiot taking up space. It includes Nueske’s Bacon, plus lots of fresh ingredients like Sweet Corn, Potatoes, and Pickled Jalapeños. But the best part? The Hash is topped with creamy Hollandaise. Shazam. Nueske’s® Pepper Bacon Hash with Sweet Corn, Potatoes, Hollandaise and Pickled Jalapeño The Griddled “Yard Bird” is another fun dish. It’s pretty straightforward, actually. Chicken Thighs are seasoned and then pressed on a griddle to render the skin crispy. Served with a side of Braised Greens and House-Made Habanero Sauce, it’s pretty much just  fancy version of what I eat pretty much every night for dinner when I’m at home — grilled chicken with hot sauce. ;-D Griddled “Yard Bird” with Braised Greens and House-Made Habanero Sauce So while this wasn’t as flavorful as I wanted it to be, it’s still a good-enough dish. (Though it pales in comparison to that hash.) To wash down the bold flavors, you have a ton of drink offerings. We’ve tried the Key Limen Key Lime Wine. It’s a fun flavor profile if you’re looking for something uniquely Sunshine State. You can also enjoy a hand full of well-known wine offerings, like Chateau Ste. Michelle and Dr. Loosen Eroica Riesling, or St. Francis Old Vines Zinfandel. But the really interesting option here is the Beer Flight. Four, four-ounce pours of locally brewed beers make this a fun choice for guests who are looking to try something new. Sample I-4 IPA, Ba Ba Black Lager, Duke’s Cold Nose Brown Ale and Florida Cracker White Ale. We enjoyed them all. Farm Fresh Beer Flight I guarantee you I’ll be visiting Farm Fresh again before the 2014 Epcot Food and Wine Festival is in the books! The Hops & Barley Marketplace BoothYou’ll find more American-inspired flavors at the Hops & Barley Marketplace Booth. The double-sized booth is located near the America Pavilion. Hops & Barley Marketplace Booth Hops & Barley has been around for a while now, having debuted in 2005. The booth began life as sort of an homage to craft beer and flavors of New England. But these days, there’s more of an upscale, classic American vibe, with a nod to food and beverage pairings. And it’s a big menu! With four dishes to sample plus lots of beverages, you could make a couple trips or even a meal out of a stop here. 2014 Hops and Barley Marketplace Menu Begin your visit to Hops & Barley with an Artisan Cheese Plate. With the “Cheese” Booth missing from this year’s Festival, the cheese plate was moved over here. From left to right, this year’s selection includes Purple Haze Chèvre, Cabot Cloth-Wrapped Cheddar, and Caveman Blue Cheese. The flavors and textures offer nice contrast, and we love the classic accompaniments of Crostini, Craisins, and Marcona Almonds. (Though, sadly, I do miss the honey that’s been served at past festivals.) All of the cheeses were delicious, but we especially loved the Cabot Cloth-Wrapped Cheddar with its sweet, nutty flavor profile. Artisan Cheese Plate We also continue to see a Lobster selection here, which has been a hallmark of the Hops & Barley Booth throughout the years. In 2014, Baked Lobster Alfredo debuts. Baked Lobster Alfredo The Pasta Dish features chunks of Lobster Meat in a Creamy Sauce under a crunchy crust of toasted Panko Breadcrumbs. Baked Lobster Alfredo The Florida Grass Fed Beef Slider made its first appearance in 2013 as part of the Florida Fresh Booth’s menu. It found a new home this year at Hops & Barley with a new topping — Pimento Cheese. And it’s great! We didn’t love the dish last year, since the leaner Grass Fed Beef tends to be a little on the dry side. But the creamy Pimento Cheese Topping is the perfect answer to this. Florida Grass Fed Beef Slider with Pimento Cheese But you’re definitely going to wanna save room for dessert. Because the Fresh Baked Carrot Cake with Craisins® and Cream Cheese Icing is tops! It sounds so simple, right? But this is some of the best Carrot Cake that I’ve had — and I love Carrot Cake. Fresh Baked Carrot Cake with Craisins® and Cream Cheese Icing Served warm, the moist cake is full of fruit and spices. And the warm, poured Cream Cheese Icing makes it unbelievable. This cake is one of the surprise highlights of this year’s Festival. (Be sure to ask for extra cream cheese icing!) Carrot Cake with Cream Cheese Icing — Cross Section But we can’t forget the beverages! To enjoy the most variety, it’s always fun to try a Beer Flight. The Hops & Barley flight includes Sam Adams Octoberfest, New Belgium Snapshot, Samuel Adams Cherry Wheat, and Leinenkugel’s Seasonal Shandy, which is Orange Shandy this time of year. Beer flight (featuring 4 4-ounce servings) Wine drinkers can enjoy La Crema Sonoma Coast Chardonnay or Julia’s Vineyard Pinot Noir. Wine in a 2014 Epcot Food and Wine Festival Souvenir Wine Glass And we couldn’t resist opting for the plastic souvenir stemless wine glass! As Halloween approaches, we at Disney Parks thought it was a great time to have you show us your Halloween Disney Side. And what better way to do that, than with a contest! Starting today and running through November 4, you will be able to upload your favorite Disney Parks-themed Halloween photos to enter for a chance to win a private “Midnight at the Haunted Mansion†party for you and three guests with a spooky overnight stay in Cinderella Castle. All of the details and information on how to enter can be found at DisneySideContest.com. Photos can be themed to four categories: Home décor, food and beverage, pumpkin carving and costumes. And each Monday this month, the Disney Parks Blog will feature tips for your photos from some spook-tastic Disney and celebrity experts. This week, it’s home décor. We caught up with decorating and design gurus Sabrina Soto and Michael Moloney at Disneyland park recently, getting some great “haunted†home décor tips from Disneyland Resort Enhancement Manager Chris Barnhill. Now, Sabrina and Michael are not just superstars of design. They also have amped-up their Halloween cred as the hosts of “The Great Halloween Fright Fight,†airing on ABC Tuesday, October 28, which spotlights Halloween-embracing homeowners who have turned their properties into macabre masterpieces. Chris shared with Sabrina and Michael some simple tips for haunted home décor, based on the creepy creations he and his team conjure up for Halloween Time at Disneyland. They include some eerie eyes (a la the wallpaper in the traditional version of the Haunted Mansion) and two sinister treasures based on decorations seen inside the Haunted Mansion Holiday which is inspired by the classic animated film “Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas.†Those are great tips. I’m going to my craft store right now! Oh wait! I can’t win! Oh well, YOU can; and that’s what counts! Don’t forget, we want to see your most frightfully-fun Disney Parks-themed Halloween photos. Check out DisneySideContest.com to enter for a chance to win some eerie, scary prizes, including that private “Midnight at the Haunted Mansion†party for you and three guests with a spooky overnight stay in Cinderella Castle. And check back this month to the Disney Parks Blog for more tips on how to “Haunt Your Disney Side.†NO PURCH NEC. Ends 11/4/14 at 11:59:59 PM ET. 50 US/DC/Canada (excl. QC), 18/age of majority +. The Epcot International Food & Wine Festival features the creative talents of many different departments here at Walt Disney World Resort, including our excellent Food & Beverage team. But did you know that Walt Disney Imagineering and Horticulture also play an important part in getting the park ready for the festival? Check out this video, in which our Walt Disney Imagineers and Horticulture cast members work together to transform the park’s Entrance Planters with “Fantasiaâ€-inspired graphics and topiaries – in just eight hours. Drawing inspiration from the film, the graphics and horticulture designs illustrate Chef Mickey orchestrating “magical forks†to spread flavor throughout the festival. For years, a large marquee sign on Harbor Blvd. welcomed guests to Disneyland park. On this day in 1989, the original sign which stood at the entrance since the park opened, was replaced with a new sign featuring an electronic marquee. To mark this occasion, I’d like to re-share two photos that were originally posted by George Savvas in this fantastic article back in 2010 here on the Disney Parks Blog. In the photo above, you can see the old and the new side-by-side as the new sign is installed. And here is the new sign, finished and lit up, as it would welcome guests for the next 10 years. Do you remember these Disneyland landmarks? Share your memories with us in the comments! You know I can’t stay away from this place. Learn About: Beaches and CreamDisney World RestaurantsIt’s been a while since we’ve visited Beaches and Cream “officially†here at the DFB. What I mean is, Beaches and Cream Soda Shop is one of the few spots I frequent almost every time I visit Disney World, but its been a while since I shared some of the goodness with you here on the blog. We’re fixing that today with a little (well, actually a LOT of) lunch at everyone’s favorite soda shop, and checking out some of the options from the updated menu while we’re at it. Ready to go? Let’s head to the middle of the Yacht and Beach Club resorts, right next to Stormalong Bay, and settle in… Beaches and Cream at Disney’s Beach Club Resort AtmosphereI’m not the only one who loves Beaches and Cream — not by a long shot. Over the years this little spot has become one of the most popular resort restaurants in Disney World… and I do mean “little.” Those arriving for their first visit might be struck by how small it is in comparison with most Disney World restaurants. And, remember, speaking of small, the restaurant now offers advance dining reservations…which are recommended. While the to-go section is still open, and seats at the counter are easier to come by than tables when you’re a walk-up guest, ADRs are often necessary even during the slow seasons these days. Beaches and Cream Dining Room Once inside, you’ll see that the decor is bright and cheerful, with soft pastels making up most of the color scheme, and mirrors to “open up†the space a bit. Beaches and Cream Much of the decoration reflects what’s on the menu: things like hot dogs, burgers, grilled sandwiches… oh, and ICE CREAM! Beaches and Cream decoration The booths are the most roomy and enviable seats, with smaller tables tucked closely together in the center. Booth seating But a lot of folks enjoy the counter seating, which offers a fun view of lots of the goings-on in the world of the chefs and servers. Bar seating Music plays a big part here, too. You can’t miss the genuine jukebox glowing near the door, spinning songs from the 50s. Jukebox But we’re here for the eats, not the atmosphere (honestly)! Let’s dig in and check out that new-to-us menu! EatsOkay, I mentioned “diner classics,” but it’s worth noting that the menu at Beaches and Cream underwent some changes a few months ago, so I was interested in checking them out. Beaches and cream menu Beaches and cream menu …as I sipped my requisite Cherry-flavored Coke. (Doesn’t it just look so good?) Cherry Coke Of course, you’ll still find a lot of the tried-and-true items like the Angus Burger and Chili. And it’s difficult — okay, all but impossible — for me to resist my absolute favorite: Grilled Cheese and Tomato Bisque. (It’s pretty much what I ALWAYS get when I go there, which is why I can’t write about B&C on every visit. You guys would be totally bored.) Tomato Bisque and Grilled Cheese Sandwich at Beaches and Cream On this most recent visit, though, I thought I’d give one of the newer arrivals a try: the Pork Belly Cuban Sandwich: ham and pork belly topped with melted swiss. Pork Belly Cuban Sandwich Typically, it also comes with dill pickle relish and grain mustard, but since I’m not a huge fan of either, I ordered my sandwich without. Our server kindly brought them, and a variety on condiments on the side. Dill Pickle Relish Grain Mustard Condiments on the side And while this sammy wasn’t my beloved grilled cheese with tomato bisque, it was an awesome substitute. The pork belly? Ah-mazing. And it wasn’t all fancy or gussied up; just all melty-hot with the swiss and ham on a crunchy-on-the-outside, soft-on-the-inside roll. Killer. (Probably in more ways than one.) Warning: Those of you who love pork belly will think this is awesome; those of you who hate it will probably be grossed out. Pork Belly Sandwich Inside My friend tried one of the new items, too: the Vegetarian Falafel. The presentation here is pretty great. Vegetarian Falafel and onion rings Unfortunately, the execution wasn’t exactly what she had in mind. The falafel itself was fine, if a little “mushy,†lacking that bit of crispness from the fried patties. She was pleased with the black olive hummus and freshness of the veggies, but the tzatziki-”style” sauce — made with soy — had an almost bitter taste as opposed to the typically cool, creamy flavor of a traditional tzatziki. Vegetarian Falafel Definite kudos for the dairy-free option, but the recipe might need a little tweaking. Still, there isn’t much in this world that can’t be fixed by a big ol’ side of hot, crispy Beaches and Cream Onion Rings, so that helped! Onion Rings It will likely not surprise you that we ordered dessert — I mean, when don’t I? But, honestly, if you visit Beaches and Cream and don’t get dessert, you’re kind of missing the Whole. Entire. Point. It’s the “cream†in Beaches and Cream — and there are more shakes, floats, and sundaes than you can shake a stick at! Beaches and Cream ice cream menu Let it be sign of what I do for you, dear readers, that I sacrificed my typical order of a No Way Jose to give you a chance to check out something different. It pained me a little… in fact, even though I didn’t have it on this trip, let’s all take a moment to gaze at it in all its hot-fudge-and-peanut-buttery glory, shall we? No Way Jose at Beaches and Cream But I did indeed branch out this time, and ordered a classic ice cream treat that — believe it or not — I’d never tried before at Beaches and Cream: the Banana Split. The Banana Split is labeled a “classic†on the menu: a scoop each of vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry ice cream topped with pineapple, strawberry, and marshmallow along with hot fudge, caramel, toasted almonds, whipped cream, and the requisite cherry on top… Oh, and a banana! Beaches and Cream Banana Split Here’s my thing, though… Pineapple with your ice cream — what’s that about? Oh, well, it’s still a big gooey pile of ice cream with yummy toppings and you can be proud that you incorporated one of your five daily recommended servings of fruits and vegetables into your dessert. DONE ! My friend ordered the Frozen Sunshine for dessert (even though, technically, this one falls under the “Shakes and Sodas†category).  It’s rainbow sherbet and vanilla ice cream mixed with seltzer and topped with whipped cream and orange slice gummies. Malts, Shakes and Sundaes menu Again, the serving is huge: not only do you get a big sundae-glass full, but you also get whatever’s left in the shake container for this blended creation. Frozen Sunshine Essentially, it’s like eating a melted creamsicle: the rainbow sherbet falls heavy on the orange side so it’s that same delicious blend of tangy citrus and creamy vanilla. YUM! Frozen Sunshine Sadly, we just didn’t leave room for the eight-scoop mountain of ice cream covered with every topping in the house — including an ENTIRE can of whipped cream — that is the famous KITCHEN SINK! Kitchen Sink Maybe next time… OverallBeaches and Cream is just a fun spot that has earned it’s rightful place as a favorite among Disney food fans (just like the Kitchen Sink has earned it’s spot on many a Disney Dining Bucket List). It’s always interesting to see them change things up a bit with the menu here, but nice to know that most of those classics remain. After all, this is a place that just starts to feel like home after a couple of visits, and what’s home without some comfort food? Top it all off with the best ice cream on property, and really, what’s not to love? Plus, the staff here are truly incredible. Many of them have been here for years, and they welcome us back each time we show up. If a visit to Beaches and Cream hasn’t been a part of your Disney World vacations previously, I’d highly recommend it (again — along with an Advanced Dining Reservation, because this place fills up fast!). It may just become your next Disney tradition! Have you visited Beaches and Cream? Please let us know your thoughts with a comment!
