  1. I can’t wait to see Disney’s “Big Hero 6” when it arrives in theaters on November 7. This film is an action-packed comedy-adventure about the special friendship that forms between a high-tech, huggable robot named Baymax and a brilliant robotics prodigy named Hiro Hamada. I’ve enjoyed the trailers as the film looks like it has everything I love, especially robots! I recently visited a few merchandise locations at Disney Parks to check out new products inspired by this upcoming animated feature. Here is a look at some of my favorite items. Similar to previous animated film releases, the Disney Theme Park Merchandise team partnered with the Disney Store to carry a few toys, plush and other items that may be found in locations outside Disney Parks. I love the Baymax plush shown at the top of this story (I want to hug him all day!). There are other items, however, that were developed specifically for Disney Parks. They include some apparel items and a six-pin, open edition pin set. In select merchandise locations in Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World Resort, guests will also find a limited release, graphic MagicBand. In order to purchase this retail MagicBand, guests must present one of the following for the MagicBand to be linked to at the time of purchase: valid theme park admission, Memory Maker card or an active MagicBand. A D-Tech on Demand case for the iPhone 5/5S will be released at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts. In the D-Tech on Demand boutique at the Marketplace Co-Op in Downtown Disney Marketplace, guests will soon find six new art designs with characters from the film. The cases shown above are for the iPhone 6, but they are also offered for iPhone 4/4S, iPhone 5/5S, iPhone 5C, Samsung Galaxy SIII and Samsung Galaxy S4 at the boutique. We will begin offering cases for iPhone 6+ and Samsung Galaxy S5 later in November at D-Tech on Demand. Finally, there will be a limited release Vinylmation mystery series coming to Disney Parks in early November. Once the film releases in November, I can’t wait to meet the stars of the movie, Hiro Hamada and his huggable buddy, Baymax when the film’s characters head to Disney Parks to greet their fans! 3. At Disney Parks, even our playgrounds are driven by story. Whether it’s a whimsical playscape inside the Dumbo attraction in New Fantasyland or the larger than life Honey, I Shrunk the Kids Movie Set Adventure at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, a first visit to a Disney Parks playground is a memorable experience during a visit to the Walt Disney World Resort. We’re continuing our exclusive #DisneyKids series this week with special peek at some first visits to The Boneyard, an open-air playground modeled to resemble a dinosaur dig site specifically for younger children (10 and under) in Dinoland U.S.A. at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. 6. This week our Happy Haunts series is taking a look at the true lady of the house – The Bride. (This character’s storyline varies a bit at Haunted Mansion attractions around the world, so we’ll focus mainly on her appearance at Magic Kingdom Park). (Art by Morgan Davidson) Imagineer Ken Anderson developed one of the first storylines for the Bride, who was a young woman named Priscilla set to be wed to a sea captain named Captain Gore. Throughout this version of the attraction – which at first was being developed as a walk-through experience – guests would follow Priscilla as she found evidence that her love was actually a wicked pirate. Priscilla then vanished and was never seen again, although her spirit presence in the mansion was said to have driven the Captain mad. In another version of the Bride’s storyline, Walt Disney himself was set to narrate the attraction (think of Walt as the “Ghost Host”), and was to reference a bride character who had “lost her head” before the big day. The Bride’s storyline was finally solidified when Imagineers Marc Davis, Claude Coats and X. Atencio were handed the project in the mid-1960s. Set in a creepy, cluttered attic full of shadows and surprises, the Bride waited for guests at the end of the room with a red pulsing heart and a flowing dress. Over the years, her storyline became more prominent, with wedding mementos placed throughout the attic, a louder thumping heartbeat, and the tune of the Wedding March plunked on a harpischord in the background. Later changes indicate that it was the groom that really lost his head inside the mansion: the Bride currently holds an ax, and nearby portraits of the happy couple reveal a headless groom when the lightning flashes. In the artwork above, artist Morgan Davidson gave the Bride a Halloween twist. What do you think? Tell us in the comments section below! 7. It’s become one of my life goals to eat my way through the entire bakery case at Les Halles Boulangerie Patisserie in Epcot’s France Pavilion. Learn About: Les Halles Boulangerie PatisserieEpcot Restaurants Disney World RestaurantsAnd why not? This place rarely churns out a dud, even though the selection is HUGE. Now, I do have to say, I’m quite partial to my favorites: for example, the Frangipane (puff pastry with an almond filling), which I’ve adored ever since I tried it at the Food and Wine Festival’s Parisian Breakfast last  year, and the Brix aux Pommes, which has become a more recent favorite of mine. So sometimes it’s hard to switch gears and choose beyond those. But a goal is a goal and I aim to do my readers proud! To that end, I’d like to show you a few other staples in that bakery case that I haven’t previously showcased on the blog. Welcome back to Les Halles! Les Halles Les Halles While there are plenty of savory options at Les Halles (it’s a great spot to grab soup and a sandwich), today we’re focusing on the sweet stuff. Let’s check out a few more French goodies tucked inside! Bakery Case at Les Halles In fact, the treats we’re checking out today are displayed side by side in there, even though they are quite different from each other. We’re trying the Parfaits aux Fruits and a little something by the name of “Duo.” DuoFirst up, the oddly titled “Duo.” Initial impression? It’s gorgeous. A smooth chocolate dome reflects the light in the bakery case and catches your eye immediately. Duo The small chocolate topper gives you a hint as to what’s inside, while the almonds circling the bottom add a bit of crunch… and basically just make the whole thing even prettier. Duo Duo earns its name by what’s in the center: both white and dark chocolate mousse, layered over a chocolate cake base. Duo cross section The light mousse layers combine to offer both the sweetness of the white chocolate mixed with the depth of the dark. I like how the just-stiff-enough mousse maintains that dome shape, and the dark chocolate “soft shell” of the dome adds one more layer of decadence. If you’re a chocoholic, this is the perfect three- or four- bite treat for you in the middle (or the beginning…or the end…) of your Epcot day. Parfait aux FruitThis isn’t the “fruit parfait” you get at Starbucks, my friends. The Parfait aux Fruit at Les Halles is yogurt mousse with berries, but it’s taken to another level. Parfait Aux Fruits Bright, fresh raspberries, strawberries, and blueberries are accompanied by a sweet berry glaze in the middle to add color and flavor. Parfait aux Fruits The mousse is substantial, and it won’t feel or taste like “regular yogurt.” Even with the yogurt base, the mousse is sweetened just enough to remove any bitterness of the yogurt while maintaining the tang. Parfait aux Fruits It’s simple, but delicious, and with the fruit I’d even add “refreshing.” Truth is, I rarely go for the soft desserts when I can have a more substantial pastry. But the parfait does a great job of providing a little something to satisfy a sweet tooth without going overboard. (You know, in case you’re the kind of person who doesn’t LIKE going overboard.) Where the Parfait aux Fruits is a light and airy option, the Duo mousse cake is complete chocolate decadence. These two treats demonstrate just a small bit of the variety to be enjoyed, and do a pretty darn good job of supporting my “there’s something for everyone at Les Halles” theory. So, that’s two more crossed off the list, with (happily!) many more treats to come! Want Even More Epcot Snack Details?Let’s face it: snacks are a big deal during your Disney vacation. 11. If given the chance, how would a tween express their Disney Side on film? This was the question that our Yellow Shoes Creative Group (partnered with Adolescent Films) posed to tween filmmakers in our “Direct Your Disney Side” project. Three tweens, Elwood Walker, Jack Vinetz, and Claire Jantzen were chosen to pitch, storyboard and even direct their own short film, all inspired by how they show their Disney Side. We’ll be sharing each student’s short here on the Disney Parks Blog in the coming weeks. In the meantime, here’s a sneak peek behind-the-scenes at the fun the tweens had during their filmmaking adventures. 15. Of all the Disney Parks attractions with catchy theme songs, I sure don’t mind when this one gets stuck in my head. “Grim Grinning Ghosts,” the theme of The Haunted Mansion, is both merry and spooky at the same time, and is perfectly fitting for one of our guest-favorite attractions. As our Halloween celebration continues, here are 10 things you may not know about this tune. The success of the catchy theme song, “Yo Ho Yo Ho (A Pirate’s Life For Me),” at Pirates of the Caribbean spurred interest in creating a similarly compelling tune for the (then under-construction) Haunted Mansion attraction. Without “Pirates” we may never have had “Ghosts!”“Grim Grinning Ghosts” composers Buddy Baker and X. Atencio were proven to be Disney songwriting successes when put on the project. Atencio had penned lyrics to the song “Yo Ho Yo Ho (A Pirate’s Life For Me)”, while Baker’s theme park contributions included scoring Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln and the Carousel of Progress.Popular voice actor Thurl Ravenscroft sang baritone for the track. His voice can also be heard in “One Hundred and One Dalmatians,” “The Sword in the Stone,” “Mary Poppins,” “The Jungle Book” and “Pete’s Dragon” among other Disney films.Thurl’s quartet, The Mellomen, also contributed harmony to “Grim Grinning Ghosts.” The group had previously lent their voices to “Alice In Wonderland,” “Peter Pan” and “The Jungle Book.” The arrangement of the tune progresses throughout the attraction, starting off on an eerie piano in the library and funeral scenes, then bolder as organ music in the dining room and a whooping party in the graveyard scene.“Grim Grinning Ghosts” hits a high note in the graveyard scene, where a set of singing busts await “to shriek and harmonize.” Did you know that each of these busts has a name? They are: Rollo Rumkin, Uncle Theodore, Cousin Algernon, Ned Nub and Phineas P. Pock. The face of singer Thurl Ravenscroft appears on one of the singing busts – Uncle Theodore, which you can identify at Magic Kingdom Park attraction as the “broken” bust.Buddy Baker, X. Atencio and Thurl Ravenscroft have all been named Disney Legends in years past for their contributions to Disney Parks and films. The pop band Barenaked Ladies did a cover of “Grim-Grinning Ghosts” in 2003 for the film “The Haunted Mansion” which starred Eddie Murphy.A reference to a “Grim Grinning Ghost” (note “ghost” is singular, not plural) appears in the William Shakespeare poem “Venus and Adonis” which was completed in 1593.10 Things To Know About The Haunted Mansion Theme ‘Grim Grinning Ghosts’ by Jennifer Fickley-Baker: Originally posted on the Disney Parks Blog View the full article
  16. It’s been so much fun hunting down all of the Halloween Treats at the Disneyland Resort this year. Halloween is by far my very favorite time of the year. I have so many photos of spooky delights and although I’d like to try every single item, I’d also like to fit into my Halloween costume in a few weeks. So, instead of a full review on each of these Halloween Time treats, let’s just look at some calorie free photos! Most of the items I’m featuring in this post can be found in Candy Palace at Disneyland, Trolley Treats in Disney California Adventure, and Marceline’s in Downtown Disney. If an item is specific to a certain spot, I’ll let ya know! Let’s start with these adorable Mickey o’ Lantern Cookies! Mickey Pumpkin Cookies Followed by some Mickey Bat Cookies! I love the tiny orange fangs! Mickey Bat Cookies New for 2014 are the Haunted Mansion Clock Crispy Clock & Mickey Mummy Crispy Treats. How cute are the little M&M eyes peeking out from behind the mummy’s “bandages?” Haunted Mansion Clock & Mickey Mummy Crispy Treats There’s also a new Jack o’ Lantern Marshmallow Wand. This one I might have to get my hands on. Four fluffy marshmallows are dipped in caramel, then coated with white chocolate and covered in orange sanding sugar. I love that each pumpkin has a different face. Pumpkin Marshmallow Wands The Bat Cake Pop is also new this year. Cake choices include chocolate, vanilla or red velvet. The cake is covered in dark chocolate and the wings are made from black licorice wheels.  Although it’s adorable, I’m out on this one. Not a fan of black licorice. You can also see that last year’s Mickey Mummy Cake Pop has returned! Bat & Mummy Cake Pops  Spider & Mickey Pumpkin Cake Pops are back too. The Spiders have legs made of gummy worms. My boys loved these last year. Warning though, they are really messy! The ears on all of the “Mickey” themed cake pops are made of marshmallows. Flavors to choose from are chocolate, vanilla & red velvet. Spider & Mickey Pumpkin Cake Pops Jack Skellington Cake Pops are back but this year Sally Cake Pops have joined him too! Jack and Sally Cake Pops I saw the Sally Cake Pops being made over at Trolley Treats in Disney California Adventure and thought they were absolutely adorable. I love her “Sour Punch Straws” hair! I think I’ll add these to my “to eat” list too! Sally Cake Pops Seasonal Cupcakes are back in Chocolate and Vanilla flavors. Halloween Time Cupcakes And then there are some new for 2014 cupcakes too! I love the looks of this Ursula Cupcake. This cupcake is enormous and served in a little bowl. It’s chocolate cake dipped in chocolate ganache with white chocolate mousse “tentacles” chocolate crunchy candies, and an edible Ursula image. It can be found only at Disney California Adventure’s Fiddler, Fifer & Practical Cafe and Pacific Wharf Cafe. Ursula Cupcake Similar to the Ursula cupcake is the new Pumpkin Mickey Cupcake. This one is also chocolate cake with white mousse frosting. It has chocolate Mickey ears and can be found at Jolly Holiday Cafe in Disneyland or over at White Water Snacks in the Grand Californian Hotel. I just noticed that the cake is vanilla even though the description provided claims it’s offered in chocolate only. Maybe they offer chocolate and vanilla? That would be great because I prefer vanilla cupcakes over chocolate any day! Mickey Pumpkin Cupcake Candy Corn Cotton Candy has also made a comeback. It is, however, NOT Candy Corn Flavored — just colored to look like Candy Corn. It’s available at the Halloween Carnival in Big Thunder Ranch and also over at Disney California Adventure at various outdoor vending carts. Candy Corn Cotton Candy Let’s not forget about the Halloween Time Caramel Apples! October’s Gourmet Apple of the Month is the Dirt and Worms Apple. A crisp Granny Smith Apple dipped in caramel, dark chocolate, and then rolled in chocolate cookie sandwich “aka Oreo” cookies. For a finishing touch, it’s drizzled with white and dark chocolate and covered in gummy worms. Dirt and Worms Caramel Apple In addition to the Dirt and Worms Caramel Apple you can also choose from Jack Skellington Caramel Apples, “Poison” Apples, Candy Corn Apples, and Minnie Witch Apples. Jack Skellington Caramel Apple “Poison” Caramel Apples Candy Corn & Minnie Witch Caramel Apples In addition to all of these goodies, there are lots of great pre-packaged Halloween Time treats to purchase at the Disneyland Resort. Perfect for taking home, they can be purchased in many stores throughout the resort. In my opinion though, Marceline’s in Downtown Disney is the best one stop shop for everything! Marceline’s Halloween Time Treats Display Gummi Body Parts We checked out these Gummi Candy Corn treats last year. They’re back again this year! Candy Corn Gummies Mickey Halloween Decor & Boxed Cotton Candy Halloween Time Lollipop Bunches Chocolate Covered Pretzels Popcorn Tins Candy Corn AND just in case you’re looking for a new Halloween Candy Bowl. I think this one will do the trick! It’s so awesome!!! Wicked Witch Candy Bowl The bowls are much bigger than you’d expect! Can you believe how many great Halloween Time treats there are to choose from??? It’s hard to pick a favorite. Have you tried any of the above Halloween goodies? If you walk through Frontierland during Halloween Time at Disneyland park, you can’t miss the beautifully decorated oak tree near the Golden Horseshoe Saloon, with glowing orange lights and hand-painted jack-o’-lanterns hanging from its branches. The tree, which is inspired by Ray Bradbury’s 1972 fantasy novel “The Halloween Tree,” was dedicated to the author on Halloween night in 2007. Bradbury, a lifetime Disney fan and the author of classic American novels such as “Fahrenheit 451,” met Walt Disney in 1964. In the years that followed, Bradbury helped develop many attractions at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts, most notably Spaceship Earth at Epcot. He also penned the screenplays for two Disney films, “Something Wicked This Way Comes” (1983) and “The Wonderful Ice Cream Suit” (1999). Bradbury’s novel “The Halloween Tree” tells the story of a group of trick-or-treaters who learn about the origins of Halloween while on an adventure to find their missing friend. Bradbury dreamed of having a Halloween Tree at Disneyland, and on the 35th anniversary of the novel, his dream was brought to life. “I belong here in Disneyland, ever since I came here 50 years ago. I’m glad I’m going to be a permanent part of the spirit of Halloween at Disneyland,” the author said at the tree’s dedication. Bradbury would visit the tree before he passed away in 2012. Today, the Halloween Tree delights guests of all ages and honors Bradbury’s many contributions to The Walt Disney Company. A plaque at the base of the tree commemorates the night of its dedication: “On the night of Halloween 2007, this stately oak officially became ‘The Halloween Tree,’ realizing famed author Ray Bradbury’s dream of having his symbol for the holiday become a part of Disneyland.” Bradbury’s icon continues to be part of Disney Halloween magic even outside of Disneyland park. If you’re celebrating the Halloween season aboard one of the four ships of the Disney Cruise Line this year, don’t miss the Pumpkin Tree in the lobby that is inspired by “The Halloween Tree.” Have you visited the Halloween Tree during Halloween Time this year? 20. Goblins and ghoulies from last Halloween … awaken the spirits with your pumpkin cuisine! Looking for a frightfully fun treat to serve at your Halloween party? Watch below as Chef Christina Orejel from Disneyland Resort demonstrates how to make Pumpkin Twists, a Halloween Time treat. Pumpkin Twists Available at Troubadour Tavern and Maurice’s Treats at Disneyland park, and Cozy Cone Motel at Disney California Adventure park. Makes 6 1/3 cup brown sugar 1/3 cup granulated sugar 1 teaspoon plus 1 tablespoon pumpkin pie spice, divided 1 tablespoon instant pectin 1 cup pumpkin puree 3 (17.3-ounce) boxes (6 sheets) frozen puff pastry, thawed 1 egg 1 tablespoon milk 1/2 cup sanding sugar Combine brown sugar, granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice, and instant pectin in a medium bowl. Stir in pumpkin puree until well combined. Refrigerate until ready to use.Place one sheet of puff pastry onto a lightly floured, movable, flat surface, such as a lightweight cutting board. Lightly dust surface of pastry with flour and roll lightly just to smooth creases.Spread with 1/3 cup of pumpkin mixture, stopping 1/4-inch from edges.Roll a second sheet of puff pastry on a lightly floured surface to smooth creases; place on top of first sheet and press down gently. Repeat process two more times with remaining pastry sheets and remaining filling. Refrigerate filled pastry 15 minutes.Preheat oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a nonstick silicone mat.Working with one filled pastry at a time, cut into 1 1/2-inch strips.Place strips on baking sheet spacing about 1/2-inch apart. Carefully lift strips and twist each 3 times before laying down. (Leave remaining filled pastry in refrigerator until ready to bake.)Mix together coarse sugar and remaining 1 tablespoon pumpkin spice.Beat egg and milk together in a small bowl. Using a pastry brush, brush each twist with egg wash and evenly sprinkle evenly with coarse sugar mixture.Bake 22 to 24 minutes, or until puffed and golden brown. Cool on baking sheet 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Repeat process two more times, cutting and baking one remaining filled pastry at a time.Cook’s Notes: To make pumpkin pie spice at home, combine 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon, 2 teaspoons ground nutmeg, 2 teaspoons ground ginger, and 1 teaspoon ground allspice. Sanding sugar is larger, polished grains of sugar – about four times larger than those in granulated sugar. Because the sugar crystal grains are large and reflect light, they give off a “sparkling” effect. The large-grained sugar won’t melt and disappear as it bakes, giving a nice crunch to dessert topping. 23. Last week we helped acquaint you and the newest cotton-top tamarin pair at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Gemma and Draco. The pair has been delighting guests all week. If you haven’t had a chance to visit yet, we’ve got you covered! Check out these photos to see the pair exploring their new home! Did you know…? Cotton-top tamarins are a critically endangered species of primate found only in the tropical forests of Colombia. This 1-pound monkey lives 8-10 years in the wild and the median life expectancy in zoos is 11.2 years.Cotton-top tamarins live in social groups of 2-10 individuals.Females, on average, give birth to twins annually and parental care in this species is shared by all group members.Pairs breed every 28 weeks in captivity, but once a year in the wild. The birth period in the wild appears to be linked to the rainy season when there is the greatest abundance of fruit and insects in the diet.Disney’s Animal Programs’ team members have helped coordinate cotton-top tamarin pairings since 1997 through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ (AZA) Species Survival Plan (SSP).The word ‘tamarin’ translates to ‘tití’(pronounced tee-tee) in Spanish. Proyecto Tití’s conservation program works to protect cotton-top tamarins in their tropical forest home in Colombia by having a 20+ year study of these amazing animals that has given us new insights into what they need to survive in the wild. Since field studies alone won’t save cotton-top tamarins, Proyecto Tití has also developed innovative strategies to empower local communities to get involved and benefit from conservation activities!Kids in Colombia are involved in conservation, too! Check out the video below to learn more about Proyecto Tití’s programs and the impact they have had on the community and cotton-top tamarin conservation efforts! 24. In my opinion, Mama Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano in Disney’s Hollywood Studios has always been hit or miss. Learn About: Mama Melrose’s Ristorante ItalianoDisney's Hollywood Studios Disney World RestaurantsBut on my last two visits, it was exceptional. I couldn’t wait to re-visit another year later and see if that was still the case. And, I gotta say, this place is still a hidden gem. I would, in all honestly, choose this restaurant over several signature restaurants on Disney property right now. Let’s take a look at the details. AtmosphereWhen we arrived for a late night advance dining reservation during an Extra Magic Hours night, Mama Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano was teeming with hungry guests. You get a sense of Mama’s random story before you ever enter the doors. The Mona Lisa, wearing shades, in front of the Hollywood Sign? Yeah, I don’t get it either. Outside Wall as You Approach Mama’s The flimsy “backstory” unfolds: Mama was once an aspiring actress who began to cook her traditional dishes for friends while she was trying to become a star. Her dreams of acting fame may have faded, but she found another route into the hearts of the masses — her cooking. And Mama Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano was born. Entrance to Mama Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano Even if the backstory still doesn’t make any sense to me after all this time, that doesn’t mean the restaurant isn’t kind of fun to look around. It’s a mix of old world meets Hollywood…and every year that goes by means Mama’s decor becomes even more antiquated. One of my favorite touches is the wall-o-1980s-stars. These headshots crack me up! It’s like a who’s who of the year the Studios opened. (I always have to scout out Mary Fran.) Podium and Entrance from the Waiting Area Other decor elements feature kitschy goodies from Mama’s collection. In Vino Veritas! More chances to look for your favorite late 20th century actors await you at the restroom entrance. And check out this guy we saw above the doorway… Celebrity Pictures Outside the Restrooms These little Olafs-on-a-stick are part of the Frozen promotion in Hollywood Studios! Guess someone thought he’d be right at home here on a gondola? Olaf — This Guy is Everywhere Walk through the large arch and past the kitchen, and the restaurant opens before you. Be sure to peek at the pizza oven as you walk by! Show Kitchen Once you’re in the dining area, pause to take a look around. The walls are covered with some fun stuff, including tons of albums. That’s right, kids — vinyl. (We realize you may have to explain to the small fry what those round black discs are. ) Atmosphere and Seating You could spend quite a while checking this place out. Cozy Lighting Seating is basic and pretty comfortable. Bright red booths are worth requesting over the captain’s chairs surrounding square or rectangular tables. My favorite seats are by the window. Seating Options While chatting with the staff, we learned that a new menu would soon roll out. So if some of these dishes look delish to you (especially the Pork Chop, hint hint), run and get them. Now. EatsSo now, it’s time to get down to eating! Like I said, I have been having really great meals here lately, and conversation with the staff may just explain why. It seems that Mama and her staff put a lot of care into these dishes; sauces and dressings are made in-house, from scratch. Nothing is pre-made, and that means that freshness and flavor are more guaranteed here than they would be at, say, your favorite buffet restaurant. As for dinner, let’s get started with the Beverage Menu. It includes many items from the Standard Disney Bar Menu, but you’ll also find a couple of drinks that are unique to Mama’s — at least in name. Beverage Menu — Click to Enlarge I decided to go for a Mama’s Margarita, a fairly traditional version of the drink that also includes Orange Juice to balance the flavors. (I requested no salt on the rim, as always.) Mama’s Margarita We also enjoyed the refreshing Italian Surfer during a past visit. Italian Surfer The Appetizer and Entree Menu is rather small. Appetizer and Entree Menu — Click to Enlarge Right away, the Spicy Tomato Butter that appears in a few different menu descriptions piqued our interest, so we asked our server to bring us a little to try with our bread. He cheerfully obliged. I was also glad to see that they’re now serving butter with the bread in addition to the olive oil — yay! So, in the end, our warm bread was therefore accompanied by three different toppings! — Unsalted Butter, Spicy Tomato Butter, and Olive Oil. While the Rolls were fairly standard Disney moderate restaurant rolls, they were a fresh vehicle for all that fantastic flavor. The spicy tomato butter was even better than we’d expected, but having it on bread just doesn’t compare to having it in an actual dish… . Bread with Unsalted Butter, Spicy Tomato Butter, and Olive Oil More than one reader had insisted that the Oak-Fired Mussels were not to be missed! And so we began our meal by sharing an order. And, wow!! The Spicy Tomato Butter, Pan Juices, and Grilled Onions combined with the Fresh Mussels for outstanding flavor. And, please…PLEASE…Mama, make that broth into a soup I can just eat with a spoon. (Save your bread to dip here!) Oak-Fired Mussels in Spicy Tomato Butter with Grilled Onions and Herb Croutons Next, I had to order the Charred Strip Steak once again. I had enjoyed it so much on my last visit that I had been dreaming about having it again (and I don’t say that very often about a Disney entree)! Served with Five-Cheese Baked Macaroni, Aged Balsamic-Shallot Butter, and a Chianti Wine Reduction that really pulled the dish together, this was just as perfect as the last time. Honestly, it’s every bit as good — and probably better — than many of the steaks at Disney Signature Restaurant spots. Sigh. Isn’t it gorgeous? Charred Strip Steak with Five-Cheese Baked Macaroni, Aged Balsamic-Shallot Butter, and Chianti Wine Reduction And the Mac and Cheese is some of the best I’ve had on property — it’s even better than Jiko’s. We also tried a new-to-us dish, the Braciola Di Maiale. The Bone-In, Herb-Roasted Pork Chop is topped with Fig Marsala Sauce, and served over Creamy Polenta and Swiss Chard. It was delicious, and perfectly prepared; the meat was juicy and every component on the plate was delicious. Braciola Di Maiale — Herb-Roasted Pork Chop with Creamy Polenta, Swiss Chard, and Fig Marsala Sauce It does appear that it will cycle off of the menu soon, but the Pork Saltimbocca (we’ve got a photo of it for you later in the post) looks to be a delicious replacement. Soon, we were ready to turn our attention to something sweet. Desserts and Coffee Menu — Click to Enlarge Dessert Drink Menu — Click to Enlarge We had seen most of these items before, so we decided to go a different route this time out and order another classic kids’ dessert — the Spaghetti and Meatball Cupcake! So cute, right? I mean, I’m not usually a big fan of making sweet food look like savory food…’cause it just confuses my taste buds…but I can imagine the kiddos really love this one. Spaghetti and Meatball Cupcake The “Spaghetti” is made from thick Buttercream Icing — perfect for holding its shape atop the cake. The “Meatball” is basically a cake pop consistency, and chocolate of course. The “Sauce” was strawberry-flavored, and the cake itself was pretty basic chocolate cake. Nothing fancy, but your kid won’t care. Spaghetti and Meatball Cupcake — Cross Section Since we are grownups, however, we also chose something a little more age-appropriate. This frosty glass of Spumoni Gelato included Chocolate, Vanilla, and Pistachio. We liked its simple presentation and the clean flavors. It’s the perfect “just a bite of something sweet” dessert. Spumoni Gelato — Chocolate, Vanilla, and Pistachio Previously, we’ve enjoyed the Chocolate Amarettini Cheesecake as well as the Chocolate Cannoli Cake. We give the edge to the cheesecake; it’s pretty delicious. Chocolate Amarettini Cheesecake Chocolate Cannoli Cake And just like that, we were finished with another incredible meal, courtesy of Mama Melrose’s! New Menu Items to Debut at Mama Melrose’s Ristorante ItalianoSo we got word that the menu will be making a change soon; and while we aren’t sure what will be exiting the stage to make way for new items, here are a few new dishes we will most likely be seeing soon. Remember — this is ALL subject to change! To begin, Seared Fennel Crusted Tuna Salad will include Seared Sushi Grade Tuna, coated with a Fennel Seed Crust, and topped with an Arugula Salad and Olive Tapenade. The current menu includes Pasce all’ Acqua Pazza, a dish that utilizes a Fish of the Day selection, but the new menu will change up the presentation a bit. Look for the new version to include Roasted Fingerling Potatoes, Smoked Bacon, Mushrooms, Wilted Greens, and a Celery Root Beurre Blanc. It appears that the current vegetarian entree, Whole-Wheat Fettucini, will be replaced with a Pappardelle Pasta featuring Roasted Butternut Squash Puree, Roasted Seasonal Mushrooms, and Swiss Chard, Parmesan, Thyme Butter, and Truffle Oil. Whole Wheat Fettuccini will give way to a new dish The menu will also include a new pork dish as well, as we mentioned. Look for Pork Saltimbocca. Pork Tenderloin is topped with Prosciutto, Fontina, and Fried Sage, and will be served with Mashed Potatoes and Broccolini. Pork Saltimbocca will replace the current pork dish on the menu In addition to these changes, three new desserts will debut: Tiramisu, a Cannoli Plate, and a Ghirardelli Chocolate and Cherry Torte. OverallMama Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano has officially attained that coveted “Hidden Gem” status with me. Every meal I’ve eaten here in recent years has been a clear homerun. And it is the food, to be sure. Freshly prepared, perfectly served, this restaurant has maintained consistency for longer than many Disney restaurants can in my experience. But that’s not all it is! The staff here are pretty much fantastic. Every person we encountered was gracious and passionate about their restaurant. That only led to further excitement on our part. We were sad that Kevin, one of my favorite servers in the whole World, was off the night we visited. But the rest of the team more than made up for his absence. If you haven’t had a chance to try Mama Melrose’s, or you’re looking for an excuse to return there, I say go for it. I know I’ll be dining there again as soon as possible.
