It’s Halloween week and we’re back at Magic Kingdom Park creating some amazing free hand “light painting” artwork in the air with colored LED penlights. Gallery13 Halloween-Inspired ‘Light Paintings’ at Magic Kingdom Park view allThe Hitchhiking Ghosts and our 12 other Halloween-themed “light paintings” were drawn without a guide or template during an after-hours park visit. Each image was drawn quickly and with skill by Matt Stewart, a Yellow Shoes Creative Group Art Director. And while Matt “drew” the art, Paul Chase, a Disney Parks Content Producer, used long camera exposures to capture each move of the penlight. Matt and Paul have used this same technique to create “light paintings” that featured the iconic profile of Mickey Mouse, an impressive American Flag in front of Cinderella Castle and the galaxy’s most famous villain, Darth Vader. World Rhino Day is officially recognized each year on September 22, and provides a great opportunity to share information and raise awareness about the exponential rise in rhinoceros poaching in the wild. While some are aware of the declining numbers of rhinos in the wild, many don’t have the opportunity to take the next step to help reverse the decline. Chad Harmon, a member of the team who works with animals in the Ituri Forest on Kilimanjaro Safaris at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, took matters into his own hands. He and his wife started a non-profit organization called The Horns and Heroes Project – an organization that combines the conservation of rhinos around the world with the passion and creativity of the art community. The organization’s first event, in 2012, invited 50 artists from around the Orlando, Fla. area to decorate cast moldings of rhino horns. These decorated horns were then displayed at an auction event and 100 percent of the $6,000 proceeds were sent to the International Rhino Foundation. The ‘Heroes’ portion of the organization’s title comes in as the money donated supports the front line park rangers patrolling on the ground, risking their lives against armed poachers to keep rhinos safe in the wild. So, that covers rhinos and art auctions, but where does Disney Imagineer, Joe Rohde, fit in? This year over 70 artists decorated rhino busts that were auctioned off. Joe Rohde learned about the event and showed support by creating his own piece of artwork that was showcased along with members of the Orlando community and Disney’s Animal Programs. A Zoological Manager on the elephant team, Steve Lefave, created the piece of art that produced the highest bid – over $900! The piece, titled “Abbey Normal,” was created using several recycled pieces and depicts a “Frankenstein”-like rhino. When asked about his inspiration for the piece, Lefave said, “If we don’t protect the rhino, we will have to recreate it by some other means.” Lefave also spoke very highly of the organization with admiration that is “through the roof” because he knows all the work to save this species comes from the heart. Inspired by the guiding principles of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Harmon strives to inspire calls to action by exposing audiences to the subject matter and then provide a way to get involved. Harmon’s intention is to invite art lovers to come in the door, but then leave an art lover who is also a conservationist. The most recent event raised over $23,000 with over 400 people in attendance! Organizations like this are just one way that Disney cast members are making a difference around the world. As Halloween approaches in just a few days, the party is already in full swing at Tokyo Disney Resort, where both Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea are hosting “Disney’s Halloween” celebrations. Families can also experience The Haunted Mansion in a whole new way, with Haunted Mansion Holiday Nightmare temporarily enhancing the attraction’s existing storyline. The park has also been festooned with Halloween decor, and guests can end their night with special Halloween fireworks. Over at Tokyo DisneySea, guests are enjoying “New York Halloween Follies,” a Halloween party that’s themed to the roaring 20s, hosted by Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse. Guests can also visit Lido Isle to spy a performance by some festive skeletons or head to Lost River Delta to attend Chip and Dale’s Skeleton Fiesta. Halloween Time at Disney California Adventure is much more “quiet” than it is over at Disneyland. There are, however, a handful of special menu items that are available through October 31st. On a recent visit I discovered a fun combo at Schmoozies in Hollywood Land. Schmoozies! The Caramel Apple Smoothie and Pumpkin Muffin are currently being featured as Holiday Specials. Caramel Apple Smoothie & Pumpkin Muffin Signage Of course I had to check both of these items out. The Caramel Apple Smoothie is made from fresh Granny Smith Apples, Caramel & Ice Cream. I think it can be called a smoothie because it has real fruit in it, but don’t get me wrong, it’s NOT a healthy item. It’s really more like a shake. Totally delicious, but not something you’d get from a juice bar! Caramel Apple Smoothie & Pumpkin Muffin Schmoozies makes all “smoothies” fresh to order, so it does take a few minutes to get your drink, especially if the line is backed up. I really enjoyed the Caramel Apple Smoothie and was surprised to be sucking up chunks of crisp apple pieces through my straw. The smoothie is VERY sweet. Almost reminds me of sour apple gummy rings, which I love, but I can only eat a handful. It was the same with this smoothie, I shared it with a friend & we couldn’t finish the whole thing. The Caramel Drizzle on top is Ghirardelli Caramel Sauce. Do you see the hidden Mickey??? Caramel Drizzle Hidden Mickey The Pumpkin Muffin here at Schmoozies was much different than the one served over at Disneyland. The one at Disneyland is much more cupcake-like, with cream cheese frosting and all. I will loosely say that this one is a little bit healther version of a pumpkin muffin. More muffin-like than cupcake-like. Topped with Streusel and Pumpkin Seeds, the muffin is moist and filled with Golden Raisins. Of course I prefer something with cream cheese frosting, but this muffin was also enjoyable! Pumpkin Muffin Close Up Overall, I think this is a great little “Fall” snack combo. The smoothies at Schmoozies are tasty, enormous, and perfect for sharing! Since the announcement of Disney Infinity 2.0 earlier this year, my son has been asking when he can get the new figures. He currently has every figure from the initial release and loves playing the game. He will be excited to hear about an early purchase opportunity on November 1-2, 2014 at Once Upon a Toy in Downtown Disney Marketplace for Disney Infinity 2.0. We will release the Disney Infinity 2.0 Starter Pack containing Merida from Disney•Pixar’s “Brave” and Stitch (retail $59.99 plus tax). Boo to You! It’s Halloween Week, and the Disney seasonal treats just keep coming! Learn About: MaraAnimal Kingdom Lodge Disney World RestaurantsToday, we’re showing you a fun Fall find from The Mara at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. I love me some candy corn, but when you combine candy corn and Cupcakes? Even better! Candy Corn CupcakeSo, Disney World has some hidden gems that keep churning out awesome eats that you’d never expect. Places like Sleepy Hollow and Friar’s Nook in the Magic Kingdom, and Landscape of Flavors at Art of Animation Resort tend to be little hot-beds of creativity when it comes to snacks and must-eat treats. The Mara at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge also fits into this category, featuring some seriously great baked goods on a regular basis (like the Chocolate Raspberry Mickey Tart). And so I give you the Candy Corn Cupcake — with Oreo Mickey Ears, even!! Candy Corn Cupcake at The Mara in Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge Mounded high with thick Buttercream Frosting in Candy Corn’s traditional tri-color pattern, the cupcake is trimmed out with orange-tinted White Chocolate Curls for even more visual impact. This is all piled on top of dark Chocolate Cake. But when you cut into the cupcake, you’ll find a little surprise hidden inside. Candy Corn Cupcake — Cross Section Now, to be honest, I’m not completely sure what this is. There is definitely chopped up Candy Corn in there, but the consistency is more firm than frosting. Maybe a White Chocolate Ganache? Yeah. We’ll go with that. It was kind of like a candy corn Halloween Truffle tucked inside. The flavors here are sweet, sweet, and more sweet. So if you’re looking for a Sugar Big Bang, you’ve found the cupcake of your dreams. Candy Corn Cupcake — Up Close So, while the flavor is pretty much…sugar…let’s be honest: isn’t the flavor of candy corn, too? The Rocky Road Gourmet Apple is a long-time favorite of mine, and I’m happy to announce that this fan favorite is returning for a limited time in November. We are so excited to finally shed some light on what’s happening behind those construction walls over at Walt Disney World’s Downtown Disney! Disney Springs Construction It seems that after stops, starts, delays, and renamings, Disney Springs is finally taking shape. And today, we’re sharing with you not one, but TWO new confirmed restaurants that will join the Disney Springs lineup sooner rather than later. And BOTH restaurants were featured on early posts here on DFB highlighting future Disney Springs dining. The BoathouseThe Boathouse will offer waterfront dining with a nautical theme. Located at The Landing within Disney Springs, the restaurant is the brainchild of Schussler Creative, the same company that brought you other super-themed restaurants around Disney like T-Rex, Rainforest Cafe, and Yak & Yeti. Gibsons Restaurant Group will operate the spot. The Boathouse — Inside Guests can expect a mulitfaceted menu featuring American fare, including seafood, steaks, and chops. In addition, the restaurant will feature three different themed bars, including The Captain’s Raw Bar, The Admiral’s Club Bar, and The Dock Bar. Rooms within the restaurant will also carry a nautical theme and decor. The Boathouse will offer guest more than just food, however. The restaurant will also serve as the launching spot for a number of boat-themed attractions. Guests can ride on a 40-foot Italian Water Taxi while they enjoy champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries. There will also be guided “Amphicar” Tours that highlight sites around Disney Springs. The Boathouse — Outside View Live music and private dining space round out the offerings at The Boathouse. The new restaurant is scheduled to serve Disney Springs guests until 2:00 AM. The Boathouse is slated to open in the Spring of 2015. Morimoto AsiaYou may know him best as an Iron Chef, but soon, Chef Masaharu Morimoto will become the latest celebrity to have a dining outpost at Disney. Chef Morimoto is set to be the face of Morimoto Asia, his first Pan-Asian restaurant. Located in the spot that was once Mannequins Dance Palace, Morimoto Asia will be a waterfront restaurant showcasing selections from across the entire Asian continent. Morimoto Asia — Outside View The two-story venue will feature show kitchens where chefs will exhibit traditions like Peking Duck Carving. Dim Sum will also factor into the menu. Guests can enjoy waterside seating or grab a drink in the cocktail lounge as well. “It’s a wonderful chance to share some of my favorite foods from across the Asian continent,” Morimoto said in an interview. Morimoto Asia — Inside To bring the concept to life, Chef Morimoto is teaming with Patina Restaurant Group, the company behind established Disney restaurants like Via Napoli and Tutto Italia in Epcot’s Italy Pavilion. The group also runs the table-service Naples Restaurant and the counter-service Napolini in Disneyland’s Downtown Disney. We first told you that the company had filed permits for a new restaurant in this spot last Spring. We thought it would be another Italian offering, so this is a fun twist! Look for Morimoto Asia to open its doors in Summer 2015. With the news that we’re seeing early predictions come to pass (including Food Truck Row, and Splitsville — Trader Sam’s will open at the Polynesian), it makes us wonder…what else is on that poster that might pop up at Disney Springs? The spiffing-up began earlier this year at Steakhouse 55, one of the finest restaurants at the Disneyland Resort: new carpet, new chairs, new dishes, new silverware – “It’s almost like opening a new restaurant,” says Chef Marcel St. Pierre. Chef Marcel took the helm in early 2014 and has been working on the new menu for nearly four months, side-by-side with manager and sommelier Brian Van Amber. And now, with extensive training for the staff complete in everything from guest service to wine pairings, Chef Marcel says they’re ready to launch tomorrow. While a handful of dishes may sound familiar (Baltimore crab cake, filet mignon, slow-roasted prime rib), every single dish on the menu has been refined, says Chef Marcel. You’ll still find Tiger Prawns, but they’re served with a new Bloody Mary cocktail sauce, shallot mignonette and lemon gelée. The new pan-roasted pork belly appetizer comes with truffle mascarpone, green apple and pickled black kale. Chef Marcel is especially proud of the new smoked filet mignon tartare, the meat arriving tableside under a crystal dome. When the dome is lifted, there’s the aroma of smoke as the dish is gently tossed tableside with mustard aioli and cage-free egg yolk, then served with shaved rye croutons. A clever new appetizer is ratatouille “meatballs,” made with finely chopped mushrooms, lentils, carrots, celery, onions and a little bread crumbs. The meatballs are served with zucchini spaghetti, vegan Bolognese and a shave of Parmesan (request no Parmesan for the perfect vegan starter). Hearts of romaine is the Steakhouse 55 version of the classic Caesar, with Castelvetrano olives from Italy, crispy bacon lardons and Caesar dressing. The new French onion soup gets a hearty seasonal vibe with cream and chicken stock, served with grilled onions and California Muenster cheese focaccia. You’ll still see the classic cuts of meat: filet mignon, bone-in ribeye, New York strip, prime rib, Porterhouse. But the classic cuts receive a special twist, like a hickory-molasses rub on the New York strip. King salmon is crusted with fava bean and rye. Lamb chops are roasted with garlic “dust” and peppercorn. Each cut of beef is beautifully garnished with roasted bone marrow (with a tiny fork for scooping out the rich center) topped with lemon gremolata. Some of the new sides to share the spotlight are a truffled mac ‘n cheese, flash-fried spinach, and the Delmonico Gruyère Casserole — a decadent, cheesy side made with fingerling potatoes, Applewood smoked bacon and fresh thyme. Duck-fat fries come with blood orange sabayon for dipping; the mashed potatoes have a new mushroom-infused gravy. Dessert isn’t an afterthought, and while the legendary 24-Layer Cake stays on the menu, it’s now served with spiced pumpkin gelato and roca (almond butter-crunch toffee). Chef Marcel thinks the new warm apple butter cake will be another home run, served right out of the oven with a scoop of Bourbon ice cream and a side of crème Anglaise. Or try the banana mascarpone cheesecake with caramel glaze, honey-dipped pecans and butterscotch sauce. The new, three-course Steakhouse 55 Chef’s Tasting for $55 ($85 with wine pairings) makes it easy to choose: start with the Fifty-Five Salad (ruby beets and feta cheese with apricot granola and citrus vinaigrette); next, the braised short rib Bourguignon with roasted root vegetables, and finish with crème brûlèe served with pear marmalade, candied bacon madeleine and cranberry compote. Anyone who has attempted to build anything knows how challenging and time-consuming the task can be. But with a can-do attitude and a giving spirit, it was an easy venture for a group of Walt Disney World Resort cast members who built larger-than-life sculptures using nothing but cans of food! During the recent CANstruction Orlando food drive and design competition, it was impressive to see two teams of Disney VoluntEARS in action as they stacked more than 11,000 canned and packaged food items to create an iconic pair of mouse ears and a tribute to Disney’s beloved attraction “it’s a small world.” Their desire to give back to the community was in full display as they carefully and strategically stacked one can at a time. With attraction photos, you can capture some amazing Disney moments. And now, Disney PhotoPass Service is making it even easier for you to collect those memories. Beginning today, if you're wearing an active MagicBand on select Walt Disney World Resort attractions, your photos will be automatically associated to your My Disney Experience account. You don't have to do anything. In fact, if you've worn your MagicBand on one of the participating attractions in the last 45 days, you should be able to find that photo in your account now. Don't have a MagicBand? Don't worry. We're making it easier for you, too. Today we turned on new touch points at Magic Kingdom Park (Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin, Space Mountain, Splash Mountain). So after you ride, simply find your photo on the preview wall and touch your park ticket or Memory Maker card to the touch point to associate your photo. We expect to have photo touch points installed at Epcot, Disney's Hollywood Studios and Disney's Animal Kingdom theme parks by mid-November. Beginning soon, guests wearing active MagicBands will have attraction videos automatically associated to their accounts. Videos are currently available for Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. Just like attraction photos, if you've worn your MagicBand on one of the participating attractions in the last 45 days, you should be able to find that attraction video in your account soon. Guests will be able to view these videos in their accounts, but a Memory Maker entitlement is required to download and share them.
