2023 was a rough year for entertainment companies and studios. ©The Walt Disney Company While SAG-AFTRA fought for better working conditions and better pay for actors, the movie studios struggled to continue producing movies. Several studios had long lists of projected movies to be released in 2023, but not all of them were able to be finished and released. As most of us know, Disney was affected by the strike in this way as many actors could not start or complete movies this year. The company also struggled with getting viewers to the theaters. So how badly did Disney suffer in 2023? Keep reading to find out! Box Office According to The Hollywood Reporter, in 2023, for the first time since 2016, Disney ceded its crown at the global box office market share. Universal Studios has taken the title as Number 1 from Disney with its 24 released movies which generated approximately $4.91 billion in global ticket sales. Disney came short with its 17 movies released and a total of $4.83 billion globally. ©Disney After lots of concern over Disney’s so-called “woke agenda”, Disney CEO Bob Iger recently said that Disney creators had “lost sight” of what they should be creating. Instead of “messages” they need to “entertain first.” But then a point was brought up that perhaps the “messages” weren’t the problem. Instead, Disney’s focus on sequels and live-action remakes could instead by the issue. ©Lucasfilm The box office numbers prove Disney has gotten behind the curve in 2023. Originally, they had over 17 movies announced for 2023, but how many were actually released? Projected Several movies were announced to premiere in 2023. There were Marvel, Disney, Pixar, and 20th Century Studios movies meant to be released. A couple of them were original stories, but most were remakes or sequels, just as ScreenRant expressed to be the issue for Disney. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania at AMC Theatre in Disney Springs While many went straight to Disney+, we were supposed to see quite a few on the big screen. The following are 11 of the movies and their projected release dates that were meant to hit theaters this year: February 17th, 2023 – Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania April 21st, 2023 – Next Goal Wins May 5th, 2023 – Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 May 26th, 2023 – The Little Mermaid June 16th, 2023 – Elemental June 30th, 2023 – Indiana Jones 5 July 28th, 2023 – The Marvels August 11th, 2023 – Haunted Mansion October 6th, 2023 – True Love November 3rd, 2023 – Blade November 22nd, 2023 – Wish Wish Billboard Released So which of those movies came out in 2023? We actually got to see the following: February 17th, 2023 – Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania May 5th, 2023 — Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 May 26th, 2023 — The Little Mermaid June 16th, 2023 — Elemental June 30th, 2023 — Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny July 28th, 2023 — Haunted Mansion November 10th, 2023 — The Marvels November 17th, 2023 — Next Goal Wins November 22nd, 2023 — Wish Ariel meet-and-greet in Disney’s Hollywood Studios Out of the 11 movies on this list, 9 were actually released. That’s not too bad considering how long the strike lasted. However, we did some shifts in release dates. The Marvels was released way late and interestingly, The Haunted Mansion was released early. ©Marvel Both True Love and Blade have been pushed back, with Blade not expected to be released until 2025, now. Perhaps the bigger issues are the 2024 release dates which we have seen get rearranged. Movies like Mufasa: The Lion King and Deadpool 3 were anticipated to open earlier in 2024, but are now being pushed. Mufasa specifically was anticipated to be released on July 5th, 2024 but is now not heading to theaters until December 20th, 2024. ©Disney So was there an issue for Disney’s movies in 2023? The box office numbers and dropped movies would indicate, yes. However, it sounds like Disney has several good movies expected to come out in 2024. We’re especially excited to see Inside Out 2! But a media analyst recently predicted that it’s not going to be a good year for movies. They anticipate that not one movie in 2024 will touch $1 billion. ©Disney Disney+ So the box office didn’t do quite as well as Disney probably would have liked, but how about Disney+? According to Disney’s 4th quarter earnings report, Disney+ subscribers were up! Iger has stressed that this is his primary goal within the company, and at the end of 2023, it seemed like things were improving. The streaming service gained 7 million subscribers globally. ©Disney But has Disney+ been part of the issues for the box office decline? Elemental may be a good indicator for that. According to The New York Times, The Pixar movie flopped when it initially hit theaters. On its opening, it only earned $29.6 million, the worst of any Pixar film in theaters. However, over time it improved, finally reaching $500 million. But over on Disney+, it had some of the highest streaming numbers. Elemental Photo Op in Hollywood Studios Pete Docter, Pixar’s chief creative officer, shared this insight, “There has been an overall shift in viewing habits as a result of the pandemic, but it’s also specific to Disney+. We’ve told people, ‘Hey, all of this is going to be available to you on Disney+!'” So could this shift be part of the downslide at the box office? Disney’s newest animated movie Wish felt these effects as well. Asha from the new movie ‘Wish’ On opening weekend, Wish was projected to see upwards of $50 million but it ended up only grossing around $19.5 million, according to Forbes. After seeing the results of Wish, Deadline stated, “It’s clear the Mouse House is in competition with itself.” Some stated the poor performance of the movie could be attributed to the trailer lacking any insight into the plot. One feature distribution analyst even stated, “Since the pandemic, not a single original IP animated film has been able to open above $30M. That suggests that studios have to work extra hard to create the urgency that comes with familiar IP. Otherwise, they’ll just wait to watch it at home. That speaks to more systemic problems with the genre.” ©Disney In the end, many non-critic viewers enjoyed Wish and it also saw improvement in the theater as time went on. But many people still simply wait until the movie is on Disney+, which may improve subscriber numbers as Iger hopes, but in turn, may hurt the company at the box office. We may have to wait and see what comes in 2024 and how the company can overcome this problem. For more Disney news, keep following DFB! The 32(!!) 2023 saw some VERY high prices for Genie+ in Disney World. Genie+ Genie+ is the virtual assistant on the Disney World app. Once you have purchased it for the day, you can make Lightning Lane selections to be able to pass the long lines. It can be an incredibly useful tool on busy days in the parks or if you just simply don’t like standing in lines. Over the holidays, Genie+ reached close to $40 per day for both the Multiple Parks and Magic Kingdom options. This was a record-high price that we hadn’t seen before. So we took to Instagram to ask you, our readers, how much is the MOST you are willing to pay for Genie+. Oftentimes, we see Genie+ prices in the mid to higher $20 range for the Multiple Parks and Magic Kingdom options. These two options are generally the highest of the options since they are usually the most popular ones to be bought. ©Disney| Genie+ prices on December 10th, 2023 Each other park is usually lower either in the low 20s or upper teens. But even on days when the prices were at their highest, Genie+ sold out for different parks! ©Disney It seems there may not be a cut-off for how high the prices can go and people will continue to purchase it. This made us curious just how much people are willing to pay to skip the lines in Disney World. Here’s what you said! The majority of people have a fairly low cutoff compared to the recent prices. 51% of our readers said they would pay $20 for the line-skipping service! 36% said $30 is still ok. But only 8% of readers said they would spend $40 and even fewer said they would go up to $50 — 5% of readers. How much are you willing to pay? These statistics are interesting to see after the last few days of record-high prices! It seems that most of our readers don’t want to spend tons of money on skipping the lines. Lightning Lane at Peter Pan’s Flight If you want to use Genie+ on your trip, you can purchase it at midnight on the day you plan to use your ticket. Then at 7AM, you can make your first Lightning Lane selection. These are different than the Individual Lightning Lanes which are paid for separately and do not require you to buy Genie+. TRON Lighting Lane It can be a tough call when to purchase Genie+ and when not to. There are a lot of things that go into making the decision such as crowds and the park you’re visiting. That’s why we created the video below, to help make the decision easier! We hope we are seeing the end of these super high prices for a while. Whether you loved a Disney movie so much in theaters that you can’t wait to be able to watch it at home, or you skipped the theater entirely to catch a film from the first time from your couch, a Disney+ subscription is a great perk. ©Disney The only problem is that it’s easy to get impatient when you’re waiting for those movies to debut on Disney+. It’s hard to even know WHEN things will debut on there at all. One of the BIGGEST questions among Disney and Marvel fans right now is when The Marvels will be available on Disney+. The Marvels debuted in theaters on November 10th, 2023, and nearly two months later, folks are wondering when they can watch it from their own devices. ©Marvel While the movie didn’t perform as expected in theaters, it seems that maybe folks just wanted to be able to watch it from the comfort of their own homes! So… when can we do that? ©Marvel Well, our best guess is that it will be available on Disney+ in February or March, 2024. This is based on the timeline of other movies that debuted in 2023. The Little Mermaid, which debuted in May, 2023, didn’t arrive to Disney+ until September, 2023. Elemental debuted in theaters in June 2023, but didn’t arrive on Disney+ until September, 2023. So, there seems to be a three to four month period before these films arrive on streaming platforms! ©Pixar Of course, Disney could totally surprise us. It’s 2024, which means that creatives everywhere are celebrating. How is it already 2024?! 2024 marks 95 years since 1928, when thousands of copyrighted works — including Steamboat Willie — were created. Since 1928, these pieces of intellectual property (IP) have been cozied up underneath a blanket of copyright protection, but now, that is no more! Yes, Steamboat Willie, recognized as “the original Mickey Mouse,” has entered the public domain — meaning his character and likeness are available to be used by ANYONE. Well, let’s see how that’s going so far. Let us be the first to introduce you to Mickey’s Mouse Trap, an all-new horror movie featuring none other than Steamboat Willie, and a horrifying masked killer. Yep, the mask is a Mickey mask. You can check out the trailer below. From the looks of it, it seems that the film has been in the works for quite some time, as it was ready to go as soon as Steamboat Willie’s copyright expired. It follows along with Alex, who is working a late shift at an amusement arcade on her 21st birthday. Her friends show up to surprise her, and then things take a horrifying turn as they all end up hunted by a simultaneously terrifying and silly-looking fellow in a Mickey mask. ©Disney According to WioNews, Disney has expressed that the copyright expiration includes only Steamboat Willie and the early versions of Mickey. The modern Mickey that we see in cartoons and the theme parks today is still protected. (Thank goodness. We don’t know if we could handle a Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway horror film.) Don’t get any ideas, folks This isn’t the first time things like this have happened, though. There are plenty of Disney characters in the public domain — as some of them weren’t even Disney’s characters to begin with! Just think of Cinderella, Snow White, Rapunzel, and other princesses that appear frequently throughout other non-Disney movies. Shrek is a great example of this. Oh, and there was also that Winnie the Pooh scary movie that happened last year when Pooh entered the public domain: Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey. Wow. We didn’t have this on our 2024 bingo card. We’ll continue to keep you all updated with more Disney news, so make sure to follow along for more so that you’re always in the loop. Looking for some happier things happening with Disney in 2024? It’s a busy day in Disney’s Hollywood Studios! Disney Genie Pamphlet We’ve seen fluctuations in pricing lately for Genie+, record highs for pricing with the highest anticipated crowds of the year as 2023 came to a close, and now we’ve seen Genie+ sell out again in just days! The holiday and New Year crowds have certainly made their impact in the Disney World parks. We’ve seen Genie+ sell out recently, but now we’re seeing that it’s sold out AGAIN for one park. Hollywood Studios crowds On January 2nd, 2024, Disney’s Hollywood Studios sold out of their Genie+ option for park visitors. When it sold out, that also took the multiple park option away from purchase. ©Disney The price for Genie+ for this park was $26 today, and the multiple-park option would have cost you $29. ©Disney pricing earlier in the day It’s important to note that the other parks are currently still available although park pass reservations for Magic Kingdom are sold out today. This tells us that Disney’s Hollywood Studios is a busy park to visit today if you’re at Disney World. If you missed your chance to buy Genie+ but still want to ride some of those popular Hollywood Studios rides, we recommend hopping in line later in the evening, as we usually see wait times drop just a little while before the park closes. Time to Ride This at Night! Remember that you can buy Genie+ starting at midnight on the day of your trip, and you can begin making Lightning Lane reservations as early as 7AM. Getting an early start will definitely give you an advantage with this service! Click here to see our FULL Genie+ guide. It’s great to see that prices have dropped for Genie+ compared to the holiday pricing we saw over Christmas and New Year’s, but the lower price point could mean that more people will buy it than would at the higher price. Disney Springs is one of our favorite places to visit at Disney World. Disney Springs Whether we’re visiting to take a break from all the hustle and bustle of the parks, or we’re visiting to be inside the Disney magic without a park ticket, it’s an awesome option for food, entertainment, and shopping. Speaking of shopping… it seems that 2023 was the year of CHANGE for Disney Springs, as several shopping locations closed permanently. Now, there’s yet another beloved store that has shut its doors. Alex and Ani is a fan-favorite jewelry brand that has had a store in Disney Springs for YEARS, as well as several merch displays within the parks. Now, though, the Alex and Ani store has CLOSED. In 2023, the store closed temporarily while it moved locations, and now, it seems that it’s closed for good. Alex and Ani location Not only is the Disney Springs location closed with construction walls in place, we noticed that a sign was put up. It looks like we can expect to see something NEW. Something new is coming! We’re curious to see what will take the place of this store (and when), and we’ll be sure to let you know as soon as we find out. We’ve got more news to share with you about Rock n’ Rollercoaster’s upcoming closure! Rock ‘N’ Roller Coaster It was recently announced that the popular ride at Disney’s Hollywood Studios would close for refurbishment starting on January 8th, 2024. However, when we first learned of its temporary closure we weren’t sure how long that would be. Now, we’ve got more information on how long you can expect to be without one of Disney World’s most popular roller coasters this year. You’ll want to rethink your thrill strategy when visiting Disney’s Hollywood Studios early this year. Starting on January 8th, Rock ‘n’ Rollercoaster will begin its extended closure for the year. When we initially learned of the closure, no expected time frame of how long we could see the attraction down was listed. Rock ‘n Roller Coaster Now, Disney has made an update to the ride’s page on their website letting everyone know to expect the closure to last for several months. They are anticipating a reopening sometime during the Summer of 2024. ©Disney Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster had a months-long refurbishment in 2023 as well, closing in January and reopening in late May. We could see a similar timeline this year. Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster As no hard reopening date has been given, we’re not totally sure if we’ll see this one opened again early or later in the summertime, so it’s certainly something we’ll be keeping an eye on while it’s down. As one of the most predominant media companies in history, The Walt Disney Company has been no stranger to news headlines. ©Disney However, since the COVID-19 pandemic launched the world into a time of uncertainty — and, in many cases, loss — Disney has been in the headlines a bit more frequently as they continue to branch in new directions, expand their parks, and attempt to make profit again. At the start of the pandemic, the company was headed by Bob Chapek, who was replaced in 2022 by the current (and former) CEO — Bob Iger. Going into 2024, four years after pandemic-related closures, Iger has some BIG changes to make to keep the company headed in the right direction. At the final earnings call of 2023, Iger shared that there were four key building opportunities that the Company would be focusing on in 2024. Those were: Achieving significant and sustained profitability in the streaming business. Building ESPN into the preeminent digital sports platform. Improving the output and economics of film studios. Turbocharging growth in the Experiences business. In order to make those things happen, Iger needs to make a few key changes. Seamlessly launch the official merge of Disney+ and Hulu. As Iger has shared many times before, streaming is his main priority. Iger shared that the company is set to profit off Disney+ by the end of 2024, but in order to do that, Disney must seamlessly launch the official Disney+ and Hulu bundle. ©Disney Currently, the beta version is available domestically, but the official bundle won’t roll out until early 2024. Rolling out this new product with no bugs, issues, or learning curves is no small feat. However, Iger seems confident that Disney can do it. Attain media rights for major sports associations. Did you know that the National Basketball Association (NBA) AND the College Football Playoffs (CFP) were both looking to hand off media rights in 2024? Disney has expressed interest in both, which is no surprise, considering their goal to focus on streaming. ©ESPN In 2024, if Iger and Disney can attain the media rights for the NBA and CFP and focus on the direct-to-consumer and live sports broadcasting aspects of streaming, ESPN+ could become the preeminent sports platform that Iger is hoping for. Grow attendance and revenue at Disney World. Turbocharging growth in the Experiences sector (this includes the Disney Parks, Disney Cruise Line, and Experiences by Disney) is another thing Iger hopes to focus on. Looking at the earnings report for fiscal 2023, it seems that the parks saw an overall increase in revenue compared to previous years, but this doesn’t mean that Disney is profiting. This means the company is one step closer to returning to normal. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure Construction So, Iger hopes to continue to build the Experiences sector, and we think that’ll tie into expansions at Disney World. You see, 2023’s fiscal growth happened everywhere BUT at Disney World — which saw a decrease in attendance and revenue. In 2024, if Disney can market upcoming attractions and experiences like Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, the return of the Disney Dining Plan, all-day park hopping, and other attractive things correctly, we might see those numbers go up at Disney World and overall. Bring creativity back to film studios. Disney’s recent movies have been hit or miss when it comes to the box office. Some have done well (We’re looking at you The Little Mermaid), but others, like Elemental and The Marvels have been box office flops. (Although, Elemental did perform much better when it was released on Disney+.) Walt the Dreamer Statue Iger and other executives believe wholeheartedly that movies aren’t performing in theaters the way they used to because of one thing: a loss of creativity. Disney shared that the focus should be on creating new, engaging stories rather than a constant stream of rehashes — in the forms of series, remakes, and similar plot lines. ©Disney Oh, and did we mention that Iger still needs to choose (and train) a successor? Media executives have their guesses on who the successor might be, but we think that the successor could be announced in late 2024 to early 2025, before Iger’s contract ends in 2026. We can’t wait to follow along with more Walt Disney Company news in 2024 and see the changes and efforts made. We’ll be sure to keep you updated along the way, so make sure to follow along for more! We are officially through the Christmas and New Year’s celebrations! It’s officially 2024! The busiest days of the year have passed. We saw park passes selling out, Genie+ selling out despite the record high prices, and some very high wait times! “Busy” is probably an understatement for the number of people we saw in the parks over the last couple of weeks. But now that we’re past the biggest celebrations of the year, we’re wondering what is happening with those very high Genie+ prices. Today, January 2nd, saw Magic Kingdom sold out of some select park passes, again! This could be a good indication that the popular park will continue to be very busy. ©Disney The crowds we had expected to see throughout the past week, finally hit the parks today. Getting into Magic Kingdom was SUPER busy! Where did all these people come from?? And Main Street, U.S.A. was jam-packed with parkgoers! Wow!! This is what we expected the hub near Cinderella Castle to look like on the morning of New Year’s Eve, but today was clearly the day everyone wanted to visit. We were surprised by these crowds, today! This is what BUSY looks like. And, yet, despite this, Genie+ prices have significantly dropped! We’re seeing some much lower prices for the virtual assistant, which is kind of surprising due to the continued high crowds. Today’s prices are as follows: Multiple Parks — $29 Magic Kingdom — $29 EPCOT — $21 Hollywood Studios — $26 Animal Kingdom — $18 ©Disney Genie+ can be very useful on these busy days so you can skip the long lines using the Lightning Lanes. However, there are also a few rides that you must pay for separately in order to skip the lines — Individual Lightning Lanes. So if you want to ride rides like TRON Lightcycle / Run or Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, make sure you’re looking for the Individual Lightning Lane selections! 2024 is going to be a year of new and exciting things in the world of Disney! EPCOT Disney shared a look at 24 new things coming to the parks in 2024. Several things were not new information, such as the opening of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, CommuniCore Plaza and CommuniCore Hall, and Pixar Place Hotel. But as we scoured through all 24 items, we noticed an almost hidden bombshell! Disney has announced that construction on an all-new Disney Vacation Club lounge will begin in 2024! Disney Vacation Club Disney Vacation Club is sort of like Disney’s version of a timeshare. You can purchase points to use towards certain rooms at certain resorts that are deemed DVC resorts. Most of these resorts are top-tier Deluxe Resorts and are located near Disneyland, Disney World, and even in Hawaii. Once you purchase points, you are considered a DVC member, which comes with certain benefits. DVC hat DVC members can have access to specialty events and merchandise. Brightline, the highspeed train company, just completed routes connecting travelers between Central and South Florida. Now, they’re giving us a peek into their plans for their West Coast expansion and exactly where this new station will be found once completed. Brightline posted on X that their next expansion phase will be located near the Las Vegas Strip, the Raiders’ Allegiant Stadium, and the Las Vegas Convention Center. ©Brightline Brightline also went on to spill a further detail in the comments of their initial announcement, noting “Brightline West will use all-electric, zero-emission trains, taking 3 million cars off the road each year and reducing CO2 emissions by 400,000 tons annually!” Once this opens, the high-speed train service could be a great alternative for travelers looking for options outside of other commuting choices, like flying or driving. Is Disney’s Boardwalk Inn at the top of your list for a 2024 Disney World stay? Disney’s Boardwalk Inn We can certainly see why. Not only can you literally WALK to EPCOT from the hotel, but it’s also near the EPCOT Skyliner. Plus you have great dining options all around because you’re also within walking distance of several other hotels. But before you book that stay at Disney’s Boardwalk Inn, we’ve got to warn you about a few things. Now, don’t get us wrong, Boardwalk Inn is a fantastic Disney deluxe hotel, but right now, some things are going on there that you need to know about. Construction Okay, so a LOT of this hotel is under construction right now. Not only are several restaurants coming to the hotel’s area (we’ll get to that in a bit), but the hotel is still in the middle of a refurbishment that includes new carpet, hallways, and decor throughout. There’s a lot of construction happening over at the Boardwalk On top of that, many of the Boardwalk’s rooms are currently getting refreshed. Let’s just say that you are probably bound to hear construction noise during daytime hours if you stay there. This could also mean that not ALL rooms at the hotel will be available for booking at certain times while they’re being worked on. Look Inside the NEW Rooms at BoardWalk Inn at Disney World! Restaurant Construction and Delays Some old dining locations have closed at the Boardwalk, including Boardwalk To Go, which is currently under construction to be the new home of Blue Ribbon Corn Dogs (which will be expanding from its Downtown Disney location at Disneyland Resort). Although Blue Ribbon Corn Dogs was expected to open in late 2023, that was delayed until 2024, so construction is still ongoing. The new home of Blue Ribbon Corn Dogs Likewise, the ESPN Club has closed to make way for construction on The Cake Bake Shop by Gwendolyn Rogers, which also had a previous opening timeline of 2023. That restaurant is also now expected to open in 2024. Construction on The Cake Bake Shop Note that both restaurant openings are highly anticipated and could potentially bring crowds to the area when they open, which could also create unexpected problems. PREVIEW and PHOTOS: Is This What We Can Expect When The Cake Bake Shop Comes to Disney World? If you still want to stay in the EPCOT area, though, you still have plenty of great choices. You can stay at Disney’s Yacht Club or at Disney’s Beach Club, both of which are close to Disney’s Boardwalk. There’s also the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin — a stay there includes some of the same perks you get at Disney-owned hotels including Early Theme Park Entry and Extended Evening hours. We’ll keep you updated on everything going on at Disney World’s hotels and the parks, so stay tuned to DFB for more.
