There are more than 40,000 volleyball players jumping and diving at Walt Disney World Resort these days during the AAU National Volleyball Championships. And whether you’re a volleyball fan or not, it’s hard to ignore this year’s event because of one special Tennessee teenager who, with the help of a little pixie dust, just might write her own storybook ending. Sierrah Lemons is leading her AAU team toward a possible national title despite having vision in only one eye. Cancer robbed her of her right eye as a toddler, yet the 17-year-old has nevertheless become an inspiration to many by developing into one of the top high school volleyball players in Tennessee. She has carried her AAU team to five tournament titles this season, leading everyone in blocks, serves and kills. And now, in her final year together with her AAU teammates, she has the squad set on winning its first national championship ever. We loved this colorful, layered treat when it appeared for the Party for the Planet back in April! UP! Cake Push Pop still available at Warung Outpost “Up” Cake Push Pop At Anandapur Tea, guests can now order a Frozen Flame: a combo of passion fruit and strawberry slushie served non-alcoholic or with Grey Goose Vodka or Fireball Whiskey! It brings so much to the atmosphere in this area of the park. He’s just fantastic! DiVine was out at the front of the park during our visit. She’s always fun to spot. Living Plants at the park’s entrance! Animal Kingdom Lodge — Jambo House Updates There’s always so much to see at Animal Kingdom Lodge. We’re bringing you some updated eats and merchandise, plus more zen. Welcome to Animal Kingdom Lodge! Animal Kingdom Lodge Menus & Eats Mara, the resort’s quick service spot, has removed the Bobotie Platter that used to be on the breakfast menu. Diners can still get a taste of Africa with the Bounty Platter, which includes pap and chakalaka. Mara Breakfast Menu We told you a few months ago about the yummy Carrot Cake that guests could find in Mara’s pastry case. It was topped with a cleverly disguised strawberry as the carrot back then. Mara Carrot Cake Now it’s topped with white chocolate animals. We found flamingos, elephants, and giraffes on our visit. Mara Carrot Cake — now with Chocolate Animals Also in the pastry case, we found the brand new Hidden Treasures Cupcake. The cast member we talked to wasn’t sure what the titular hidden treasure is, but based on the ingredients list, we think it might just be the funfetti cake inside. Millennial Pink Cupcake Honestly, we’re not seeing the millennial pink; it looks more like rose gold to us. But raspberry mousse sounds yummy! Do you see it? I spy with my little eye… It’s the Bread Service Board from Sanaa! The Sanaa Bread Service board!! Yes: this Bread Service!! Leave room for the Bread Service at Sanaa! Last week, a handful of cast members were allowed into Toy Story Land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios to be among the first to experience Slinky Dog Dash, the new family coaster that will open with the debut of the new land on June 30. One of the land’s highly anticipated new attractions, Slinky Dog Dash is themed as if Andy built it in his backyard using his Mega Coaster Play Kit and some other favorite toys, including Jessie and Rex! The attraction’s ride vehicles – inspired by the character of Slinky in the film – send riders dipping, dodging and dashing around turns. Check out the video above to hear what the first reactions are to this adorable new attraction. As someone who lives in Florida, but occasionally longs to see snow, Disney’s Blizzard Beach Water Park is one of my favorite places at Walt Disney World Resort. It’s so nice to visit this frosty (albeit melting) ski resort whenever I miss cooler weather! But living in Florida does of course have its perks, and Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park is always there when I’m in the mood to embrace tropical paradise. Both of these water parks are so beautiful and immersive. They’re full of thrilling and serene photo opportunities, but it’s hard to capture them since cameras and water don’t mix. Enter Disney PhotoPass Service! Now through September 3, when you visit either Disney water park, Disney PhotoPass photographers will be there to capture the thrills and chills! With the help of some protective camera equipment, they even capture photos of you enjoying select attractions. Were you one of the millions of “Super” fans who saw “Incredibles 2” this past weekend? The film set domestic box office records in its opening weekend, including – in true superhero style – smashing the record for biggest animated debut of all time! If you’re an “Incredibles 2” fan, you simply can’t miss all the fun of the Incredible Tomorrowland Expo at Magic Kingdom Park. This celebration takes place daily around the Rockettower Plaza area at the center of Tomorrowland, and includes must-snap photo ops, custom décor, “The Incredibles” character appearances, “super”-themed entertainment and more. First up, Disney fans can’t stop talking about the debut of appearance of Edna Mode, who travels through the Expo riding atop her SuperMobile. (Check out a sneak peek of her appearance in the video above). You can also catch a glimpse of members of the Super Super Fan Club who are roaming the Expo dressed in cosplay as their favorite new aspiring heroes: Brick, Reflux, Krushauer, Voyd and Screech. “Moments in Super History” photo stops abound throughout Tomorrowland. Each one commemorates a unique heroic event in “super” history, such as the Incredibles’ battle with the OmniDroid. At noon each day, the Jack-Jack Diaper Dash gives young guests a chance to show off their “super” speed, in a race to crawl to their parental sidekicks. Guests can sign up to participate starting at 10:30 a.m. in front of Rockettower Plaza Stage. The excitement really kicks into gear during “Super Party Time,” a continuous variety show of entertainment that takes place daily from 2-7 p.m. During “Super Party Time,” a Party Host, DJ and Super Party Sidekicks host fun and games for guests. Mr. and Mrs. Incredible and Frozone are set to make special appearances, as are two up-and-coming “Supers” – ElectroGirl and Gyroman. The newest Refillable Popcorn Bucket that we just spotted TODAY in Magic Kingdom may be the cutest one yet! Of course, we at the DFB may be a little partial, because this one features a TON of iconic Disney snacks! Refillable Popcorn Bucket on Main Street, U.S.A. Where to begin?!? How about with our favorite Mouse, who’s holding balloons formed like… well, just like him , only in their food versions of a Mickey Ice Cream Bar and a Mickey Soft Pretzel! Refillable Popcorn Bucket Hand-scooped Ice Cream Cones can be seen making up the spires of Cinderella Castle, and now we can see Mickey’s other hand holding a Jumbo Turkey Leg. Refillable Popcorn Bucket Now, I’m not sure if I’m right on this, but moving on to the Epcot part of the design, I think Tinkerbell is holding a lollipop, and the Monorail is coasting along a Churro, if my eyes don’t deceive me. Some time ago now, Churro Ice Cream Sandwiches hit the scene in Disneyland’s Downtown Disney. And the hopeful cry immediately went up for their arrival in Disney World. Well, it only took four years, but…. Vanilla Ice Cream Churro Sandwich IT’S HERE!!! Head to Magic Kingdom’s Sleepy Hollow Refreshments for the brand new Vanilla Ice Cream Churro Sandwich! Sleepy Hollow Menu All the ingredients are in the name: hand-scooped vanilla ice cream is sandwiched between two churros-turned-cookies. Vanilla Ice Cream Churro Sandwich The churros are sprinkled with plenty of cinnamon and sugar surrounding the dough. Churro Cookie But there are some differences between this version at Magic Kingdom, and the ones that hailed from Disneyland’s Downtown Disney. First, the churros at Sleepy Hollow are NOT warmed prior to serving. And, considering Florida’s heat, this is probably a good call to counteract the potential for fast melting. Vanilla Churro Ice Cream Sandwich… still in tact! On the downside, though… our churros were a bit stale (an issue I’ve been coming across at Sleepy Hollow with several other menu items for a few months, honestly). Inside the Churro Cookie The outer part was a little difficult to bite, and even to cut into. But we’re on the right track… cinnamon-y fried churros served up with a cool, creamy scoop of ice cream! Vanilla Ice Cream Churro Sandwich Now, something to note: the Churro Sandwich has replaced the Ice Cream Cookie Sandwich at Sleepy Hollow. So, just know that you can still find those ice cream cookie sandwiches at the Plaza Ice Cream Parlor if that’s what you crave in the Kingdom. Plus, for just a little extra change you can top your Ice Cream Cookie Sandwich with Peanut Butter sauce (or caramel. Or hot fudge). Independence Day is less than a month away, and the parks at Walt Disney World Resort will be celebrating our nation’s birthday with some star-spangled salutes to America! If you’re planning a visit for the 4th of July, here are some highlights of the special entertainment planned for that day: Epcot – On July 4, enjoy special evening concerts of great American songs by Voices of Liberty at 5:30 p.m., 6:45 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the America Gardens Theatre. During the day, you can also meet Mickey and the gang in patriotic attire outside The American Adventure, and at 9 p.m. that night “IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth” joins the celebration with the addition of a heart-pounding, all-American grand finale! Magic Kingdom Park – At 9:15 p.m. on both July 3 and 4, “Disney’s Celebrate America! A Fourth of July Concert in the Sky” rockets into the air above – and all around – the park. Academy Award-winning composer Michael Giacchino, who also scored the music for Disney•Pixar’s “The Incredibles” and “Incredibles 2” films, has come on board to compose the music for the thrilling Incredicoaster, which is set to debut when Pixar Pier opens at Disney California Adventure park on June 23. Michael has taken his musical themes from the films and adapted them into this high-speed coaster experience. We joined Michael during a recording session with an accompanying orchestra. Most of the musicians were also part of creating the score for the “The Incredibles” and “Incredibles 2.” Check out the video below! Anchoring the newly reimagined land of Pixar Pier, the Incredicoaster will zoom you along with the Parr family to capture the elusive baby Jack-Jack. The new music adds to the thrill and excitement of this super adventure! Michael is no stranger to Disney Parks. Wow! They have been busy at Wilderness Lodge’s Roaring Fork in Disney World! New eats at Roaring Fork We collected a whole round of updates for you, which will be coming soon to the blog. But first we’ve gotta share our favorite new item! New Pixar Ball Chocolate Mousse Brownie at Roaring Fork It looks like the creative folks over at Roaring Fork in Disney’s Wilderness Lodge are just as excited as we are for Toy Story Land with the launch of their newest specialty brownie we discovered today! They have introduced a multi-layered brownie that looks like the Luxo Ball, most famous for being our favorite guy Andy’s ball from the Toy Story Movies! Just take a look at this! How can you not get excited? Roaring Fork Luxo Ball Brownie The first thing we noticed when we received this was how heavy it is, you know you are in for a treat when you carry this! The base is a chocolate brownie with very, very thick and very, very chocolaty chocolate icing. And ON TOP of the icing is a layer of chocolate hazelnut ganache. It’s the icing and ganache combo that make this dessert so physically heavy. There is a crazy amount of both making this a super rich snack. The hazelnut flavor in the ganache light and not overpowering — it just adds a nice, nutty element. The ball shape comes from a layer of white chocolate mousse, underneath a white chocolate shell. The shell is decorated with a fondant blue stripe and red star creating the recognizable look of Luxo. When the Happily Ever After fireworks show in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World replaced Wishes just over a year ago, the responses were all over the map. Some were deeply saddened; others were ready for a change. But one thing was for sure: there would be fireworks. Happily Ever After Fireworks Lots and lots of fireworks. Happily Ever After But what we really wanted to know was how soon could we book a Happily Ever After Dessert Party? We took you inside the party last July, and it was a tasty, colorful affair. Held on the Tomorrowland Terrace — with the less expensive option of viewing from the Plaza Garden in the Hub — the Dessert-First Happily Ever After Dessert Party is packed with eats, views, and some super friendly Cast Members. Tomorrowland Terrace Dessert Party Check In Desk So when Disney announced an AFTER fireworks party also to be held at Tomorrowland Terrace but occurring after the final blasts have died off, we — and our faithful DFB readers! — had some questions. In particular, we heard from several readers who wanted to know what the Plaza Garden Viewing was like now that two groups of party-goers would share the space. In my experience, the Plaza Garden Viewing was not terribly crowded. Before the show began, most guests were sitting on the turf, relaxing. When the show began, everyone stood to watch. But when I arrived at the After Fireworks Party, there weren’t a ton of attendees. So the conditions on the ground for viewing the show likely depend a lot on how many tickets are sold to each of the parties. But the view is as fabulous as ever! Happily Ever After So what sort of treats can guests of the After-Fireworks Party enjoy, late into the night? Tasty things both sugary and savory, as it turns out! Happily Ever After AFTER Dessert Party Spread Desserts are very similar — basically exactly the same — as they are at the pre-fireworks dessert party. Per usual, guests can dig into Dark Chocolate-Dipped Strawberries. These are massive and everything you expect them to be. I like the added touch of the Happily Ever After logo printed on the base. The Cheesecake Brownie Bites are a delicious combination of creamy and sweet. Chocolate Dipped Strawberries and Cheesecake For something on the lighter (well, fruitier…) side, guests can enjoy a Pineapple Delight (basically a pineapple compote with thick whipped cream) and a Strawberry Tart. Pineapple Delight and Strawberry Tarts Red Velvet Cupcakes are topped with bright yellow cream cheese frosting, and Mickey smiles back from the Oreo Treats. Not gonna beat around the bush: the Oreo Treats are a little lame, but they’re sugary and chocolatey and have Mickey on them, so they’re not all bad. Red Velvet Cupcakes and Mickey Oreo Treats There’s lots of Fresh Fruit to enjoy. At my party it was a spread of watermelon, honeydew melon, cantaloupe, and red grapes. The Macarons are a nice touch in pistachio, lemon, raspberry, vanilla, and coffee flavors. Fresh Fruit and Macarons The Happily Ever After After-Fireworks Dessert Party also features some customizeable eats, including this Create Your Own Cupcake station. Select a vanilla or a chocolate cupcake, swirl on some frosting, and decorate as you wish! Create Your Own Cupcake Station A cast member (YAY NENE!) is on hand to help scoop up ice cream for you at the Create Your Own Sundae station. Create Your Own Sundae Dessert Station You’ll find Cookies, Brownies, and Krispie Treats awaiting your vanilla ice cream (or enjoy them as is!). Cookies, Brownies, and Krispie Treats Nene, the awesome cast member, made me her specialty brownie-cookie sundae. And I pretty much can’t get enough of the whipped cream, so this was a winner. Create Your Own Sundae There’s also a fun S’mores on a stick treat, which combines a roasted, chocolate-dipped marshmallow (cast members are on hand to roast them for you!) with chocolate shavings, sprinkles, and graham cracker crumbs. So fun to eat! Chocolate Dipped Marshmallows And, you know, there’s this. It’s a colorful and delicious plate of treats. Not necessarily what one typically eats after a nighttime fireworks sesh, but when in Disney, dessert me! One Sweet Plate! But what am I forgetting… Oh, right — there’sooeygooeytoffeecake!!! Ooey Gooey Toffee Cake!!!! You didn’t catch that? THERE’S OOEY GOOEY TOFFEE CAKE, and you can eat as. much. as. you. want. (Yes, yes, that’s the same Ooey Gooey Toffee Cake that we love to love over at Liberty Tree Tavern!) And it’s as awesome as ever and the best thing I put in my mouth at the party. C’mon — IT’S OOEY. IT’S GOOEY. IT’S TOFFEE CAKE! This version is ooier and gooier than what you get at Liberty Tree, and that, in my book, is a PLUS! Ooey Gooey Toffee Cake Up Close and Personal!! Ahem, yes, let’s continue. There are a few savory options at this party, two of which are a little unusual for a Disney dessert party. Cheese Cubes are not so unique, but cheese is always welcome in my book, and it’s a good option for those watching their sugar. Cheese Cubes Spinach Dip and Crackers is a great addition to the party — with the crackers performing double duty with the cheese if you want! And there’s tons of spinach in the dip, so it’s healthy, right? The weird thing about this, though, was that the spinach dip was super cold. I didn’t love it. Spinach Dip and Crackers The Taco Spring Rolls were surprisingly delicious. One of my favorites from the evening! Taco Spring Rolls To go with the spring rolls: a tasty Chipotle Dipping Sauce! Chipotle Sauce That’s it for savory bites, but they provide a good contrast to all the sweets. Of the two more unique options, the spring rolls were the clear winner. Savory Bites There are plenty of beverages to quench your thirst, including milk, water, and unsweetened tea. (Pick up some sugar nearby if you want it.) Milk, Water, and Unsweetened Tea There’s coffee – caffeinated and decaf — plus hot water (for tea bags) and hot cocoa. Hot Water, Coffee, and Hot Cocoa For a fruity drink, stock up on POG juice (passion, orange, and guava juice combo — AKA Jungle Juice), lemonade, and strawberry lemonade! POG Juice, Lemonade, and Strawberry Lemonade And for a real celebratory drink, pick up a Sparkling Apple Cider. Sparkling Apple Cider The cost for the After-Fireworks Dessert Party is $69 for adults and $41 for kids and includes unlimited eats and drinks, plus Plaza Garden Viewing for the show. Disney lets party-goers know they can check in up to ninety minutes before Happily Ever After begins, but if you do, you’ll basically be hanging out in the Plaza Garden for a while. Overall, the After-Fireworks Dessert Party offers a good variety of eats and terrific reserved views from the Hub that don’t require you to stake out a spot far in advance. I expect on nights when both parties are sold out, the crowd in the Plaza Garden Viewing area could be uncomfortably large, so that’s something to consider. The food was decent — standard Disney dessert party fare. I liked the addition of the savory items; they made a bigger difference to the overall value than expected. But I think the ooey gooey toffee cake was the clincher. So if you’re a fan of that stuff, this party might be worth it for you. Don’t Miss Out on Any Disney Fun! Pixar Pier at Disney California Adventure park will soon welcome its first guests into the reimagined land. Set along the shores of Paradise Bay, Pixar Pier will bring the wonderful worlds of Pixar to life! During the evening of Monday, July 2, some of our Disney Parks Blog readers will be able to attend a special, after-hours party in Pixar Pier! This meet-up will kick off with reserved viewing for the dazzling “Paint the Night” parade in Disney California Adventure park, followed by a panel discussion with creative forces from Walt Disney Imagineering. Then after the park closes for the evening, meet-up guests will get to explore Pixar Pier—including riding the thrilling Incredicoaster and Pixar Pal-A-Round attractions, discovering the Pixar-inspired neighborhoods, tasting yummy bites and more!
