Earlier this week, actress, singer and fashion designer Vanessa Williams treated her daughter Sasha Gabriella Fox to a visit to Walt Disney World Resort to celebrate Sasha’s recent high school graduation. Congrats, Sasha! While at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Daisy Duck stopped by the Tree of Life in her fashion-forward outfit to say hello to Vanessa, Sasha and Sasha’s friends before heading over to Donald’s Dino-Bash! The mother-daughter duo love everything about Disney. Vanessa has been visiting the parks for over 30 years and Sasha told me she’s been coming to Disney since she was just a little girl. With Flag Day being celebrated on June 14 and Independence Day only a few weeks away, guests visiting Disney Parks this summer have plenty of options for getting into the patriotic spirit. Recently, Disney Parks Merchandise joined the star-spangled, summer celebration by releasing the Americana merchandise collection. Bathed in red, white, and blue, these new products are the latest on-trend offerings created especially for Disney Parks. “Mixed with images Mickey and Minnie Mouse, this brightly colored assortment is the perfect accent to summer fun,” explained Katie Thompson, Global Merchandise Strategy manager at Disney Parks Merchandise. Nestled in a room off the lobby of Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – French Quarter lies one of the hidden gems of Walt Disney World Resort. Here you can unwind in a southern-style jazz lounge called the Scat Cat’s Club. Decorated with music memorabilia, this full bar serves up specialty cocktails, wine, draft beer, and a lip-smacking list of appetizers. The location recently “jazzed” up their appetizer menu, so I’m here to give you all the details on the new eats! First up is Chicken and Waffles. These bite-sized snacks are the perfect mix of sweet and spicy. The dish comes with tender Cajun chicken bites served on waffle crisps and topped with buttermilk ranch and candied bacon. Try these out with a tall draft beer and you’ve got yourself a tasty combination. Next up is Crawfish Étouffée with tender crawfish tails, spicy shellfish stew and steamed rice. This classic Cajun dish will warm you up and have you singing its praises! And while you’re enjoying those spicy seafood flavors, why not sip on a Blood Orange Margarita with premium tequila, Cointreau, fresh lime juice and blood orange sour? On the topic of seafood, you’ll love the Sassagoula Crab Dip, served with bagel chips and cornichons. This dish is perfect to share among friends! Of course, what would a good southern-style menu be without some good ol’ smoked brisket? The Bayou Brisket Sliders are sure to be a hit with smoked brisket, tomato jam, and pimento cheese. They also come with delicious and crisp house-made Cajun-seasoned chips. While you’re chowing down on these sliders, why not sip on a Southern Hurricane as well? During this ticketed event, the culinary masters from two of my favorite Disney Springs venues – Chefs Yuhi Fajinaga, James Petrakis and Julie Petrakis – will present a wide variety of family-friendly fusion dishes that bridge Asia and the American South. In addition, guests ages 21 and up can enjoy craft brews from nearby breweries. Wondering what’s on the menu? Pork cheek tamales, Dim Sum Dogs (gyoza sausage with fried bao bun), Florida peach glazed pork belly satay with spicy peanut sauce, Pork Skirt Steak Yakiniku Tacos and house-cured charcuterie will be served throughout the second floor of Morimoto Asia, while the star of the show – a whole roasted pig – will be sliced and served to guests on the upstairs patio overlooking Disney Springs. There are a lot of exciting new enhancements taking place around Walt Disney World Resort and our golf courses are no exception. We upgraded the bunkers at our Magnolia course in 2015 and now we are planning similar enhancements for our Lake Buena Vista, Palm and Oak Trail courses. One of the coolest enhancements will be adding Mickey-shaped bunkers to Lake Buena Vista and Oak Trail similar to the one on No. 6 on the Magnolia course. The Palm course is currently undergoing its regular aeration process and is also getting re-imagined bunkers and improved drainage capabilities. It’ll re-open June 18. While we are creating the Mickey-shaped bunkers, we are also going to enhance all of the bunkers at the Lake Buena Vista course, including adding new powdery white sand. At Oak Trail, the greens are being restored to their original size and totally resurfaced utilizing paspalum grass for the first time ever on a Disney putting green. The new developments for those two courses begin June 18 at Lake Buena Vista and June 25 at Oak Trail. Both courses will be finished by mid-August. In the meantime, there will be special discounted rates at both courses in addition to regular rates at the Magnolia and Palm courses, which are open for play all summer, along with FootGolf, the hybrid soccer and golf game recently added to Oak Trail. Welcome Youka and Zalika, two Grevy’s zebra foals born within the last month at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, who are now visible on Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail. The foals are already reflections of their moms – both in their stripe patterns, which carry down to the next generation and in their behavior and demeanor. The zebra animal care team has noticed that Laylee’s foal Youka is more curious and independent, while Zuri’s foal Zalika is a bit bashful. Zebras learn by watching, so the foals are learning a lot by mimicking their moms. For example, the foals watch their moms chew hay, so they try to do it, too. The pair also try to copy their moms when they bathe themselves in dust. Each day brings new learnings as the foals continue to grow and thrive. In talking to zebra keepers Collin Beatty and Lori Kurdziel, I learned both Laylee and Zuri are excellent moms. Zuri hovers more over her foal Zalika, sticking close and keeping a watchful eye on her. Laylee has always been very curious and outgoing, and it seems her foal Youka is as well. Grevy’s zebras are the most endangered of all zebra species, and these births were a result of our ongoing commitment to the Species Survival Plan (SSP) program, which helps ensure healthy, genetically diverse populations of animals for years to come. The fan-favorite “Paint the Night” parade at Disney California Adventure park is currently dazzling audiences during the limited-time Pixar Fest at the Disneyland Resort. This electrifying parade uses more than 1 million brilliant lights, high-energy music and cutting edge special effects featuring many beloved Disney and Pixar pals. Joining “Paint the Night” on June 23 is a new float inspired by Disney•Pixar’s “The Incredibles” and “Incredibles 2.” The Parr family and their pal Frozone will make their debut in this spectacular parade with high-tech, pop-art effects. Here’s how the fun and excitement of “The Incredibles” will be brought to life: The dynamic and colorful new float connects both “The Incredibles” and “Incredibles 2,” picking up where the first film left off and portraying the scene that shows the Parr family banding together against the supervillain known as “The Underminer.” Violet Parr uses her super powers to surround herself with a “force field.” It will come to life through a custom-built persistence-of-vision (POV) globe – the first and largest ever to be installed on a Disney parade float. Dash’s super-human speed is captured through an innovative system of 64 individually lit frames, flashing as he races in circles around the float. Mr. Incredible and Mrs. Incredible, along with their pal Frozone, light up the night in new super suits. The suits have been installed and wired by hand and are fully programmable to be in sync with the music and the float lighting. The super suits, designed by eccentric fashion designer Edna Mode, are illuminated with nearly 100 sheets of flexible, miniature LEDs. This is the first time these light-up suits will be worn by any Disney or Pixar character. The chest logos on the Incredibles’ glowing super suits are made up of 60 individually programmable LEDs. This super float joins “Paint the Night” this summer during Pixar Fest, the limited-time celebration happening now through September 3.
