  1. When you enter Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa in Hawai‘i, you’ll notice the colorful sights of the soaring Maka‘ala lobby. You will also probably notice the fragrant smells of plumeria filling the air. However, one of my favorite things that tug at the senses are the unique sounds of beautiful Hawaiian music. Every evening, starting at the sunset hour, you can immerse yourself in the music of Hawai‘i—from Hawaiian standards to contemporary stylings of classic island songs. Some of Hawai‘i’s most renowned musicians perform live at Aulani Resort. Here are a few of my favorites: Hale and Nick share their Hawaiian language prowess through songs and a soothing brand of Hawaiian music not often heard. Hoku Zuttermeister, one of Hawai‘i’s premier falsetto singers, artfully performs the music of Hawai‘i with a contemporary feel. Teresa Bright plays traditional island songs, weaving in the sounds of jazz and blues. Ben Vegas and Maila Gibson are a contemporary duo who have been entertaining audiences with their sensational vocals for more than 15 years. Jerry Santos, accompanied by the exceptional guitar stylings of Kamuela Kimokeo, blends traditional and contemporary Hawaiian music. Enjoy complimentary music daily at Aulani Resort, adding the perfect soundtrack to your vacation in Hawai‘i. View the full article

  7. This summer, beloved stories from several Disney films will come to life at Walt Disney World in the form of new attractions, entertainment, experiences and more at all four parks, setting up summer 2018 to truly be an “Incredible Summer.” Here’s what to expect at each Walt Disney World Resort location. The Incredibles Take Over Tomorrowland at Magic Kingdom Park – Guests can party with Mr. Incredible, Elastigirl, and Frozone from Disney•Pixar’s “The Incredibles” and the soon-to-be blockbuster “Incredibles 2.” Edna Mode, the greatest superhero costume designer, will also make her debut appearance. Each evening, guests can enjoy a “SUPER” dance party on the Rocket Tower Stage. [NOTE: Disney•Pixar’s “Incredibles 2” opens in theaters June 15, 2018.] The Guardians of the Galaxy Take the Stage at Epcot – StarLord, and Gamora from “The Guardians of the Galaxy” will join an alien band, taking guests on a journey through the cosmos. The party will feature hits from Awesome Mix Tapes 1 and 2 – fun and favorite tunes from the two movies’ soundtracks – building the anticipation for a new Epcot Guardians of the Galaxy attraction. “Adventurers Meet UP! A Great Bird Adventure” & A “Dino-Tastic” Celebration for Donald Duck Will Debut At Disney’s Animal Kingdom – Two new can’t-miss offerings will debut at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in time for the park’s 20th anniversary. First, guests can discover new bird species from around the world at the new show “Adventurers Meet UP! A Great Bird Adventure,” which will star Senior Wilderness Explorer Russell and his furry friend Dug. The park will also launch a “dino-tastic” celebration, in which Donald Duck takes over Dinoland, U.S.A., in a new character celebration. See “The Incredibles 2” at AMC Disney Springs – Everyone’s favorite family of superheroes is back in “Incredibles 2” – but this time Helen is in the spotlight, while Bob navigates the day-to-day heroics of “normal” life at home with Violet, Dash and baby Jack-Jack, whose superpowers are emerging. When a new villain hatches a brilliant and dangerous plot, the family and Frozone must find a way to work together again—which is easier said than done, even when they’re all Incredible. “Incredibles 2” busts into theaters on June 15, 2018. And last, but not least … Gallery Toy Story Land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios view all Toy Story Land Opens at Disney’s Hollywood Studios – One major highlight of “Incredible Summer” will be the grand opening of Toy Story Land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. This new 11-acre land will shrink guests to the size of a toy and allow them go explore the fun and adventure of Andy’s backyard. There, guests can experience two new attractions: the family coaster Slinky Dog Dash and Alien Swirling Saucers. Toy Story Land also will feature an existing guest-favorite attraction, Toy Story Mania!, which will expand to add a third track into the rotation. The land’s Woody’s Lunch Box will be a new quick-service restaurant that will offer up tasty meals and old-fashioned soda floats to Toy Story Land guests. Be sure to stay tuned to the Disney Parks Blog for opening date information on Toy Story Land. View the full article

  12. Earlier today, Disney Artist Will Gay stopped by Epcot earlier today to paint plein air (which in the art world means creating art straight from the field). Our cameras streamed the entire session live, right here on the Disney Parks Blog. (Watch the full replay here). Will was more than happy to turn this morning’s creation, which shows Spaceship Earth from the Italy Pavilion at Epcot, into a downloadable wallpaper for you. This wallpaper gives you the artist’s view of the park early in the morning. To choose a design, simply click on the image above and you’ll be able to find a size for your desktop/mobile device. Be sure to check out the terms of use about using the wallpaper before you download it. Will is just one of many artists whose work is featured at this year’s Epcot International Festival of the Arts. This year’s event also offers seminars, demonstrations, performances and much more. 13. When I heard that the Disneyland Resort horses would be “on vacation” while enhancements are made on Main Street, U.S.A., I had visions of our equine friends donning sunglasses and floppy hats, cooling their hooves in a wading pool and sipping refreshing beverages from very long straws. Turns out, a vacation for a horse is very different than a vacation for people. In the absence of regular shifts on Main Street, U.S.A., our four-legged cast members are following their usual routines in order to keep fit—both physically and mentally. Each horse has a schedule for grooming, bathing, driving, riding and ground work. However, they do have more time for play, which is an important part of being a horse. Horses, after all, are herd animals and it’s important for their well-being that they have time to be together. One way in which this is accomplished is through “turn-outs,” which is the horsey term for “playdates.” The horses are turned out in an enclosed arena, in groups of three or four, and they run together, kick up their heels and just move as a herd. Inevitably, each horse will find that perfect spot of ground on which to roll over and stretch their back and legs. Total relaxation, equine style. Maybe our vacations aren’t so different after all. 14. One of our favorite things about staying in a Disney Vacation Club villa is the inclusion of a kitchen where we can whip up a quick meal any time of the day. Beach Club one-bedroom villa kitchen and dining area And while the DVC resorts do sell a variety of groceries in the resort’s gift shop, many guests choose to order groceries from off-site stores including Garden Grocer.com or have non-perishable items shipped to the hotel. But did you know that you can order groceries from the DVC resort hotels and have them delivered to your villa? Any guest who is staying in a DVC villa at the Walt Disney World Resort, Disneyland Resort, Vero Beach Resort, Hilton Head Resort, or Aulani Resort can print out a grocery order form available at the Disney Vacation Club website and order groceries for delivery! The forms are also found in your DVC villa, just like this one from the Boulder Ridge Villas and Copper Creek Cabins at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge. Grocery order form for DVC villas Grocery items available to order include milk and dairy, breakfast items, non-alcoholic beverages, deli items, canned goods, coffee and tea, frozen foods, pasta, fresh fruits, snacks, and disposable items like paper plates and cups. 15. Family time is the cornerstone of the Disney Parks experience – and there’s no more fulfilling way to spend time together than by giving back to the community! It’s in that spirit that Disney Parks partnered with Points of Light to launch the Disney Family Volunteering Reward program to recognize and inspire nonprofits engaging families. Eligible nonprofits can earn up to 20 tickets per calendar year through the new program. Organizations across the United States are already getting involved. As part of the new program and in honor of National Mentoring Month, 17 Big Brothers Big Sisters of America chapters across the country are hosting family volunteer activities to earn complimentary tickets to visit Disney Parks. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County and the Inland Empire earned tickets by hosting a carnival for children they serve that included a service project. Disney VoluntEARS were “BIGS for a day” at the carnival, creating care packages for seniors in need with their “littles.” Take a look at how the service project contributed to a day of fun, and how the organization was able to earn another day of fun (this time at the Happiest Place on Earth) by doing it! If you or a nonprofit or school that you work with would like to learn more about the program, visit http://pointsoflight.org/disneyrewards/. View the full article
  16. Our favorite Friar is serving up a new menu of LOADED TATER TOTS — with a Fried Twinkie for dessert! — at Friar’s Nook! Learn About: Friar's Nook Magic Kingdom Disney World Restaurants And “nook” is definitely the operative word in the name of this tiny Fantasyland Counter Service spot, which you’ll find in the shadow of the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. It’s basically a row of counters with some general tables just outside where guests can also eat their ice cream from Storybook Treats. So, it was surprising when this little spot started serving up some BIG dishes, like the newly retired Barbecue Chicken Mac and Cheese. Suddenly, this humble little kiosk was totally on the radar. And now it’s right back up there with a brand new menu of LOADED TOTS!!! Friar’s Nook Sign It’s your choice of Loaded Greek Tots, Fiesta Tots, and Buffalo Chicken Tots. And to help you narrow it down, we’re trying them all for you! Friar’s Nook New Menu With a nod to the Friar, let’s tuck in. (Get it? Friar Tuck? One of my all-time favorites! Anyhoo….) Loaded Tots and Fried Twinkie First up: the Loaded Buffalo Chicken Tots are topped with Buffalo chicken (of course!), chopped celery, bleu cheese crumbles, and a bit of garlic ranch dressing. The same salty, crispy tater tots make up the base of each dish. Loaded Buffalo Chicken Tots Now, the Buffalo Chicken is packed with some pretty good flavor; that said, it wasn’t overly hot. So, that’s good news for those who are averse to hot spice, but those who love that buffalo sauce kick will probably be disappointed. Loaded Buffalo Chicken Tots The nice thing is that you can still enjoy this one even if it’s hot out. Second: the Loaded Fiesta Tots are loaded with ground beef chili, tomatoes, peppers, queso, and jalapeños. Loaded Fiesta Tots While the jalapenos deliver some heat, if the chili and queso had any spiciness, it wasn’t at all noticeable. Loaded Fiesta Tots Again, the flavor itself was solid; it just lacked that zip from any additional spice (which is either good or bad news for you, depending on your tolerance). And finally, the Loaded Greek Tots are topped with tzatziki sauce, tomatoes, onions, banana peppers, olives, and feta cheese. Loaded Greek Tots The good news? That tzatziki is pretty terrific; packed with great, cooling flavor. Loaded Greek Tots The bad news is that, in comparison to the Fiesta and Buffalo Chicken Tots, the Greek Tater Tots are a lot less “loaded.” Loaded Greek Tots For that reason, the Fiesta and Buffalo Chicken Tots offer up the most flavor. I feel like this could be an easy fix, though. And now, for dessert! The Fried Twinkie is topped with your choice of vanilla, caramel, strawberry, or chocolate sauce. It’s pictured below in the background of the Tots with strawberry. Loaded Tots and Fried Twinkie topped with strawberry sauce But, hey, we wanted to sample them all, so back we went and made a special request for all the sauces to be drizzled on the Twinkie, which was granted! Fried Twinkie I have to say, I found the outside shell to be a little overdone; it was somewhat tough to cut into the Twinkie. Fried Twinkie But the cake inside was still impressively soft, with the melted cream center adding to the nice “gooey factor” overall. Fried Twinkie From a taste perspective, the extra flavor from the fryer (not to be confused with the Friar) delivers that hint of saltiness to the sweet treat, making it a very fun dessert option. It does seems that there is a bit lacking in execution of each option on the new menu. But, it is the very first day, after all, so there is some definite promise here. Loaded Tots at Friar’s Nook So, having tackled both the Tots and a brand new Rose Gold Ears Cupcake today, we’re signing off from the Magic Kingdom, with many thanks to our ol’ pal, the Friar!! Oh, any hey… if you’re missing the Mac and Cheese on the menu at Friar’s Nook… well, don’t you worry: there’s plenty more where that came from! 17. This summer, we are once again giving families the chance to explore incredible destinations around the world. Our grand tour of Europe begins in the Mediterranean, followed by cruises to northern Europe, Norway and Iceland. Over the next several weeks, I’ll be putting the spotlight on several of the destination countries you can visit on a Disney cruise in Europe, starting today with Italy. Rome For the first time in 2018, Disney cruisers can experience the inspiring history of Rome on a cruise that begins or ends in The Eternal City, offering more time to explore before or after the cruise. In Rome, which is also a destination during most of our Mediterranean cruises, families can explore the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain and the Vatican. Don’t miss your chance to sample authentic Italian cuisine! Milan Also for the first time in 2018, we’ll call on Genoa, Italy, a gateway to the beautiful metropolis of Milan. As a global capital of fashion and design, Milan features top-name designer stores, boutiques, open-air markets and art galleries. You may want to bring an empty suitcase on the cruise to bring home your new belongings after a shopping excursion in Milan! Florence The Renaissance city of Livorno, situated along Tuscany’s western coast, is your gateway to Florence where you can explore the Piazza della Signoria, Santa Croce Square and the famous Ponte Vecchio bridge. For a firsthand look at Michelangelo’s David, make plans to visit the Accademia Museum. Pisa Livorno is also a short trip to Pisa, home to one of the world’s most famous monuments. The Leaning Tower of Pisa is one of many works of art and architecture in the city’s Square of Miracles (Piazza dei Miracoli). Of course you’ll want to take a photograph of yourself holding up the tower! Naples The age-old city of Naples is dotted with Medieval, Baroque and Renaissance-era churches and castles, plus a plethora of historical museums. It’s among the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities, located nearby the ancient Roman ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Naples is also recognized as the birth place of pizza, so be sure to grab a slice! Next up, I’ll put the spotlight on destinations in France you can visit on a Disney cruise this summer. 18. Magic Kingdom has its very own Rose Gold Ears Cupcake! Magic Kingdom’s Rose Gold Ears Cupcake Okay, wait… let’s back up for just a minute. Remember the Rose Gold Ears Cupcake that recently debuted at Epcot’s Sunshine Seasons? Based on the uber-popular Rose Gold Minnie Mouse Ears that are still a HUGE hit in Disney World (when you can find them, that is!), this cupcake celebrates a bunch of beloved things all at once: rose gold, Minnie Mouse, Ears (!), and CUPCAKES! Rose Gold Minnie Ears Cupcake Well, now you can stop by the Main Street Bakery to find the one in Magic Kingdom, and it can be yours for $5.49 (or a snack credit on the Disney Dining Plan)! Magic Kingdom’s Rose Gold Ears Cupcake You can spot at least one difference right away. Though the Magic Kingdom cupcake is likewise topped with a pair of chocolate rose gold ears, the enormous pile of buttercream frosting is entirely rose gold hued and shaped into roses. Similar to the Sunshine Seasons cupcake, the cake base is marbled. Magic Kingdom’s Rose Gold Ears Cupcake However, this time the vanilla cake is swirled with red velvet. Magic Kingdom’s Rose Gold Ears Cupcake In any case, it’s just about as Instagram-worthy — and, fortunately, as tasty! — as Epcot’s version, even if it is slightly lopsided. (We checked; they were all that way… today, anyway.) Magic Kingdom’s Rose Gold Ears Cupcake So, your only choice is will you be grabbing your Rose Gold Ears Cupcake in Magic Kingdom or Epcot… or somewhere else? After all, with the popularity of BOTH the Ears and the cupcakes, we may be spotting this treat in even more locations soon. Please let us know if you see any other versions around the World! 25. Disneyland Resort is known for serving up some great street food-style eats. Whether your jam is a cinnamon-and-sugar-coated churro or a hand-dipped corn dog, Walt’s park has got you covered. There’s even some pretty great corn on the cob!! Wrapped Corn on the Cob And that popular street food now has a new spin — DIY elote! And our Disneyland correspondent Heather Sievers (follow her adventures @DiningInDisney) was able to grab a couple shots of the components. So, first, at the Turkey leg and Elote stands around the park, grab a corn cob. Disneyland Elote Next you’ll receive a packet of Elote components: Mayo, Tajin spice (chili, lime, and salt combo), and Parmesan Cheese.
