Summer is here and it’s time to get wet! There are tons of ways to beat the heat and cool off when you stay at a Walt Disney World Resort resort hotel. My favorite splash pad is the Alice in Wonderland Splash Park at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. It offers lots of water slides and waterfalls, and there’s even an adorable Mad Hatter hat that fills with water and dumps it on unsuspecting little ones. The Big Blue Pool area at Disney’s Art of Animation Resort is also a big draw for kids with splashing fountains and larger-than-life pals from the “Finding Nemo” film. Guests visiting Toy Story Land will feel like they have magically transformed to the size of a toy as fun-loving “Toy Story” characters come to life in the larger-than-life outdoor setting of Andy’s backyard. Shoppers can commemorate their visit with new logo merchandise, must-have collectibles and unique gifts. With the opening of the new land on June 30, the merchandise team has made shopping for these products even easier at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. “We want guests to have a convenient and fun shopping experience,” explained Rachel Swears, Manager for Location Strategy at the theme park. “Two retail carts in Toy Story Land – resembling a toy camper and toy dump truck – will carry new logo items including pins, accessories and of course, toys. We’ve also expanded the assortment to other shops in the park, making it easy for guests to find the products they love.” Two of those new products include small scale replica toys inspired by the new attractions. Designed using 3D models created in partnership by Pixar Animation Studios and Walt Disney Imagineering, the Slinky Dog Dash & Dodge Power Boost Set features spinning flames and launching vehicle action. The three pullback toys resembling vehicles from the Alien Swirling Saucers attraction launch forward on their next adventure once released. Additional locations at Disney’s Hollywood Studios will carry these toys and other logo products include Beverly Sunset. Located on Sunset Boulevard, this spot has a show-stopping selection of Pixar-themed merchandise. Guests will find the full Toy Story Land assortment, and a curated collection of “Toy Story” apparel and accessories perfect for creating stylish looks when visiting the 11-acre land. Guests will also find Toy Story Land merchandise at Mickey’s of Hollywood on Hollywood Boulevard and at In Character located in the Animation Courtyard area. Deciding where to dine in the World Showcase at Walt Disney World’s Epcot is no easy feat. Learn About: Chefs de France Epcot Restaurants Disney World Restaurants And the France Pavilion makes a strong case for itself — as well it should, representing a country whose cuisine is legendary. The dining options in France cover all the bases. Monsieur Paul features signature dining upstairs in the Pavilion, while Les Chefs de France offers table service in true Parisian bistro fashion. Boulangerie Patisserie les Halles serves up quick service eats like a Jambon Beurre Sandwich and soups — plus stunning pastries. And if you want a frozen treat, L’Artisan des Glaces offers sorbet and ice cream in lovely flavors. We enjoy all of the dining options in France, but on my most recent visit, I stopped into Les Chefs de France for a table service meal full of French favorites! Does Les Chefs de France live up to the lofty expectations its pedigree belies? Les Chefs de France Atmosphere Les Chefs de France is located front and center on the street level of the France Pavilion. You’ll spot the deep red awning over the entrance and the classic French architecture that lets you know you are, indeed, stepping into une autre pays. The interior of the restaurant is bright and cheerful, with lots of globe lights and massive windows. Wall colors and ivory moldings keep things fresh. Inside Dining Area Table seating is dark, anchoring the space. The banquette seats are upholstered in rich leather with dark woods. Indoor Seating Les Chefs also has a stunning sunroom, with endless windows and gorgeous design details. Sunroom Area The textured ceiling and vaguely deco ceiling lights are stylish and interesting. Outdoor Lighting The floors in the sunroom feature an intricate tile pattern. Tiled Flooring Table settings throughout the restaurant are simple but stately. Place Setting Overall the dining spaces are sophisticated and comfortable — so let’s get some eats! Eats The Drink Menu is stacked here, with wine (sparkling and otherwise), champagne, cocktails, and non-alcoholic options in abundance. Les Chefs de France Drink Menu I opted for a fun cocktail: the French Martini. It’s comprised of vodka, Chambord, pineapple juice, and lemon-lime foam. It’s accented with fresh fruit that compliment the pink color. This is a fun and fruity drink — great for the summer season. French Martini The menu at Les Chefs de France features Plats from land and sea — plus a Prix Fixe option. Préludes are the appetizers, and they are spectacular. Les Chefs de France Menu The meal starts with a Baguette, baked beautifully brown and with the exposed interior crusty and delicious. In some cases we say skip the bread and save room for the rest of the meal, but with bread this exceptional, you can’t skip it. Seriously — eat it ALL. ;-D Baguette I started with three Préludes: Les Chefs versions of charcuterie, a cheese board, and a flatbread. Appetizers at Les Chefs de France The Assiette Campagnarde is the charcuterie plate loaded with rustic meats and pates. The portion size here is generous and certainly share-able. The meats were delicious and salty, sliced paper thin and served alongside some cornichons. T Assiette Campagnarde The cheese plate is called Plateau de Fromages de France — literally ‘plate of cheeses from France’. This is one of my all-time favorite cheese plates in Disney World, and it never disappoints. First, the portions are actually large enough to share. (Many Disney cheese plates — especially those at signature restaurants — have teensy portions of a few cheeses.) Second, the cheeses are LEGIT. So delicious. Plateau de Fromages de France A selection of French cheeses are served with raisin and walnut bread, a handful of shelled walnuts, and red grapes. These were generous portions, again, and I love the detail of the newspaper and cutting board presentation. As with previous visits, I really enjoyed the cheeses with that baguette, too! Plateau de Fromages de France The A la Flamme Alsacienne is a flatbread inspired by the region of Alsace. The lightly browned dough is topped with creme fraiche, onions, and bacon — lots and lots of bacon. You guys know I always order this because it reminds me the flammekueche I used to get in Switzerland. Simple, but so rich and full of flavor. There’s no skimping on the bacon or those sweet, simple onions. A la Flamme Alsacienne On this visit as with past ones, I would have appreciated a bit more creme fraiche. The creaminess is welcome and adds some moisture to the flatbread. Still: look at that bacon! A la Flamme Alsacienne I tried a selection of entrées, including this tasty vegetarian lasagna — Lasagnes de Legumes du Soleil a l’Huile d’Olive au Thym — which I’d had before AGES ago and wanted to sample again. That’s a lot of French, y’all, but essentially this is vegetable lasagna with oil and thyme. It’s a guest-favorite vegetarian dish and I always want to double check on my recommendations. And it holds up. It’s a fresh and delicious vegetarian option, a bit more imaginative than other vegetable pasta dishes. Essentially it’s a ratatouille, but that amazing cheese makes a huge difference. Lasagnes de Legumes du Soleil a l’Huile d’Olive au Thym The cross-section gives us an idea of the structure here: two layers of perfectly-cooked pasta packed with tons of veggies. Lasagnes de Legumes du Soleil a l’Huile d’Olive au Thym The broiled salmon dish is incredibly light and fresh-tasting. Called Filet de Saumon Mariné auvin Blanc et Citron, the flavors of wine and lemon elevate the perfectly cooked fish. Broccolini and some wild rice complete the plate and round out the meal. Filet de Saumon Marine Auvin Blanc et Citron For those craving something a bit heavier, Steak Frites fit the bill. The grilled flatiron steak is tender and delicious, and those frites — French fries! — are fabulous! They’re cut in house daily and the flavor (how do they DO it?!) is out of this world. My only complaint: the Beurre Maitre d’Hotel is a lemony parsley butter that, with the lightness of the lemon, didn’t work for me with the steak. I would have preferred a garlic to the lemon. Steak Frites Beurre Maitre d’Hotel Still, I’d get this again in a heartbeat just for those frites! They’re truly awesome. Nosh or Not? Say bonjour to Les Chefs de France if: You want to enjoy a delicious meal in a sophisticated setting — even at a theme park! You love French food. You’re into fine dining and want to have a special meal while on vacation. Bid adieu to Les Chefs de France if: You’re more of a burgers and fries type of diner. French food doesn’t appeal to you. Overall Les Chefs de France know how to craft fine food, and the atmosphere is bright and cheerful. For fine dining in Epcot’s World Showcase, this is near or at the very top of the list. But while it might seem like a fancy place, the fact that it’s located in a theme park — aside from being a remarkable addition to that genre — makes it approachable. Service has been a problem for this place in the past, but on my recent few trips it’s been acceptable to good. Flavors are on point. And atmosphere is incredibly authentic. RECOMMENDED! Have you made your plans yet for the 4th of July? If you’re coming to Walt Disney World Resort for the holiday, Epcot is the #1 spot for Independence Day celebrations! There’s so much going on across the park that day: Special Fireworks: “The Heartbeat of Freedom” What would a 4th of July celebration be without fireworks? And Epcot has the best show around! It starts at 9 p.m. with a performance of “IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth,” which concludes with the addition of a heart-pounding, all-American grand finale. This one-night-only fireworks extravaganza unites music from great American composers with more pyrotechnics than you can imagine! Voices of Liberty – An Epcot tradition for more than 35 years, this legendary a cappella group will perform a series of special evening concerts of great American songs in the America Gardens Theatre at 5:30 p.m., 6:45 p.m. and 8 p.m. Joining the Voices of Liberty on stage will be Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy, dressed for the occasion in their special “Spirit of ‘76” attire. You can also catch Voices of Liberty performing special patriotic songs in the rotunda of The American Adventure at 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.
 Disney Characters – During the day, you’ll have the opportunity to get a special photo with Mickey, Goofy, Pluto and Chip ‘n’ Dale, all wearing their patriotic best, right outside The American Adventure pavilion. Tonight’s Disney Parks After Dark photograph takes us to Pixar Pier at Disney California Adventure park as an Incredicoaster train flies through the loop above Toy Story Midway Mania! Ah, Pixar Pier, where beloved Pixar characters and stories come to life through attractions, games, food, music, and architectural features. I’ve spent a lot of time photographing Pixar Pier in recent weeks and the place is simply wonderful. There are quite a few things to discover in Pixar Pier’s Toy Story Boardwalk. You’ll shrink down to the size of a toy on the fan-favorite Toy Story Midway Mania! At Poultry Palace, big appetites and small fries alike can enjoy a fun chicken meal inspired by Pixar’s short, “Toy Story Toon: Small Fry.” You can also stop by Señor Buzz Churros, where Buzz has switched into Spanish mode to offer this classic treat. The first-ever Pixar Fest is taking place all across the Disneyland Resort, bringing the playful spirit of Pixar to life in a celebration of friendship and beyond, and we keep adding to the fun! Each evening, you’re invited to drop in at Tomorrowland Terrace in Disneyland park for the Pixar Pals Dance Party. Hit the dance floor, as a DJ keeps things hopping, and you never know who may stop by! One of my favorite things about visiting a new place is exploring it by foot. I don’t feel fully immersed in a city until I’ve walked its streets, parks and markets … preferably with a delicious local treat in hand! Cartagena is a relatively quiet and unspoiled area of Spain—with less mass tourism than the surrounding areas—and it is super pedestrian friendly, so you can explore all the best attractions at your leisure. And you’ll want to take your time, because this city is a sight to behold! Its diverse heritage has resulted in a rare blend of striking modern architecture and millennia of ancient historical influence. Here are a few highlights you can look forward to experiencing in Cartagena … Roman Theatre You wouldn’t know it by looking at it, but this spectacular display of ancient Roman architecture was hidden from the world until just 30 years ago! It was discovered buried beneath a series of other buildings built by the powerful civilizations that came into power following the Roman Empire. The site’s impressive museum features a treasure trove of artifacts from the theater’s layered history. Castillo de la Concepción In the heart of the city, at the top of its highest hill, a stunning castle presides above the streets of Cartagena. Built on the site of a Roman temple, the Castillo de la Concepción also faced years of changes as the empire du jour conquered the city and repurposed the site. It was eventually turned into a medieval fortress and is now home to a museum chronicling Cartagena’s maritime history. Cala Cortina Beach Located in a lovely cove, Cartagena’s pristine playa is the perfect place for relaxation after you’ve met your daily step count goal roaming the city. On July 4th, the Disneyland Resort is celebrating the stars and stripes by welcoming the 1st Marine Division Band based out of Camp Pendleton, and participating in local parades in Anaheim and Huntington Beach. Organized in World War II, the 1st Marine Division Band consists of 50 Marine musicians and preserves our country’s strength and character, whether performing music or serving in a combat zone. The 1st Marine Division Band will participate in the daily flag retreat ceremony at Disneyland park, followed by a pre-parade performance from Town Square to “it’s a small world” before the 6 p.m. showing of Pixar Play Parade. At 7 p.m., the band will perform a special concert at Fantasyland Theatre. Guests can wrap up their Fourth of July celebration with a special patriotic finale after “Together Forever – A Pixar Nighttime Spectacular.” Come let freedom ring at the Disneyland Resort, or in the community with Disney friends participating in the Huntington Beach and Anaheim Fourth of July celebrations. It’s almost time to Play Big, with the opening of Toy Story Land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios just a few days away! When you visit this fully-immersive new world, you’ll suddenly find yourself the size of a toy, wandering through Andy’s backyard and engaging with some of his favorite toys. Buzz, Woody and Jessie are there, along with a Green Army of toy soldiers to get everybody involved in the fun! The Green Army Drum Corps marches through the backyard several times a day, playing lively percussion sets filled with awe-inspiring drum sequences. You’ll definitely want to be on the lookout for their high-energy, one-of-a-kind performance, and you may even find yourself drumming with the corps! Elsewhere, Sarge and his Green Army Patrol are looking for recruits to enlist in a fun and interactive boot camp for all ages. You could get caught up in a game of “Sarge Says,” playing with giant Pixar balls, oversized crayons and other fun props to see if you have what it takes to become an official Green Army cadet. Disney After Hours, the special ticketed event that allows you to enjoy Magic Kingdom Park after the gates close to day guests, officially returns to the park tonight. Disney After Hours is a ticketed event that is limited to a small number of guests, which means little to no wait at more than 25 attractions and experiences at the park, including favorites like Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Under the Sea ~ Journey of The Little Mermaid, Space Mountain and many more. A Disney After Hours ticket gives you park entry as early as 7 p.m., which gives you time to enjoy the fireworks before heading off to the attractions.
