There’s a new doorbell at Walt Disney World, and it’s pushing some fans’ buttons. Internet buzz leads to this theory, which has its firm believers: This marks the entryway to a Club 33 at Epcot. The ringer in question is in place in the American Adventure building in the World Showcase side of... View the full article

Earlier today, we unveiled a new, innovative plan to completely transform the patient and family stay at children’s hospitals around the world with the creation of personalized, distinctly “Disney” experiences featuring beloved Disney characters and stories. And Walt Disney Imagineers will be leading the creative design work at each hospital! Disney Chairman and CEO Robert A. Iger and Mark A. Wallace, President and CEO of Texas Children’s Hospital were joined by Mickey Mouse for the big announcement at Texas Children’s Hospital – the first hospital to work us and this new approach. This initiative, which includes the Walt Disney Company’s dedication of more than $100 million, will roll out over the next five years. During that time, Imagineers will be working with patient care experts to help create a supportive atmosphere that’s personal, warm and entertaining at the hospitals. The combination of customized experiences with favorite Disney characters and our legendary creativity will help inspire young patients and their family and ease the stress of a hospital stay. How will it happen? Here are a few concepts: Addition of a new RFID-based system allowing patients to customize their hospital visit by choosing their favorite Disney stories and characters. The system will also unlock special elements to further personalize and enhance the experience, such as “enchanted” artwork that comes alive. Themed treatment and patient rooms featuring interactive murals of Disney stories, bed linens and gowns featuring each child’s favorite characters, and personalized in-room entertainment. Also, well stocked mobile “play carts” will include Disney-themed games and activities to give families something to do together to help alleviate stress and boredom. Disney first-run movies and television shows, available both in-room and in themed pop up movie theaters in the hospital, along with other Disney entertainment options. Disney customer-experience training for doctors, nurses and staff. Disney Institute will create a customized program for healthcare professionals designed to foster a less stressful, patient and family-centric hospital experience. Disney teams are already working with a panel of medical experts, including doctors, nurses, hospital administrators, parents and child life professionals from around the world, to advise on the best ways to help hospitals create a more personalized and comforting experience for patients and families. This new patient-focused initiative will expand the Company’s rich legacy of supporting children’s hospitals, which dates back to Walt Disney. Keep checking the Disney Parks Blog for future updates. Disney’s “A Wrinkle in Time” doesn’t hit theaters until March 9, but this past weekend, more than 200 Disney Parks Blog readers were treated to an early preview of the film at AMC Disney Springs 24. From visionary director Ava DuVernay comes Disney’s “A Wrinkle in Time,” an epic adventure based on Madeleine L’Engle’s timeless classic which takes audiences across dimensions of time and space, examining the nature of darkness versus light and, ultimately, the triumph of love. Through one girl’s transformative journey led by three celestial guides, we discover that strength comes from embracing one’s individuality and that the best way to triumph over fear is to travel by one’s own light. Check out what our readers had to say about the film in the clip above. Disney’s “A Wrinkle in Time” debuts in theaters on March 9. View the full article

No visit to Hawai‘i would be complete without experiencing a luʻau, or Hawaiian feast. KA WA‘A Luʻau at Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, will take you on an enchanting journey, sharing the deep cultural roots in canoe (or waʻa) exploration. The evening includes beautiful music and dance, family activities and a delicious luʻau feast. In this episode of “Meet Aulani’s ‘Ohana,” you’ll meet Noa, a local storyteller part of KA WA‘A Luʻau. Noa guides guests through time—when voyagers from Tahiti arrived to settle in Hawai‘i, farming and fishing practices; plantation days and celebration of family traditions. In keeping with the Hawaiian cultural roots of Aulani Resort, KA WA‘A Luʻau immerses guests in the world around them, recounting tales of O‘ahu, as well as the legends of the demigod Maui. Lively music and traditional Hawaiian dance, including hula kahiko and modern hula ‘auana, vividly bring the show’s story to life. Meet Noa in the video below: Located at Aulani Resort’s Halawai Lawn, KA WA‘A Luʻau is offered on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays (subject to change, based on season). The first trailer for Disney's live-action "Christopher Robin," released Wednesday afternoon, gave us a snippet of a scene in which a tense Ewan McGregor sits on a park bench, swivels around to discover an aging teddy bear standing behind him and exclaims in disbelief, "Pooh?!" Brown Derby Lounge is a terrific place to dine if you’re looking for a little Hollywood Flair at Disney’s Hollywood Studios — and the best part is that there’s no ADR required! Learn About: San Angel Inn Restaurante Epcot Restaurants Disney World Restaurants That’s right! You can saunter up to Brown Derby Lounge on a whim and experience the understated elegance and tasty menu that so many have lauded in the Brown Derby Restaurant proper. We’ve enjoyed our visits here, where Margarita and Martini Flights rule and you almost can’t go wrong with the menu of Brown Derby Restaurant-approved eats. And with outdoor seating on Hollywood Boulevard, it’s a great place for people watching! During a recent visit to the World, I dropped in for a few plates of food — and left having eaten the best thing I ate in my entire visit! I love being surprised by awesome food — even more so when it’s served in such a great location! Hollywood Brown Derby Lounge Bar Atmosphere Hollywood Brown Derby Lounge is a relaxed, mostly outdoor location (seats are on the patio of the Brown Derby). In the past, they have offered indoor seating at times. Outside, tables are close, but it’s a nice little getaway for a last-minute meal or drink. Passersby Seating is at both standard height tables and tall bar tables. Hollywood Brown Derby Lounge If they ARE offering inside seating on your visit, this is the gist. Inside Patio Seating at Brown Derby Lounge But let’s get to the most important part of this! Eats The menu at the Brown Derby Lounge is packed with tasty beverages and app-sized bites, so it’s a fun place to try a few new-to-you things. Brown Derby Lounge Menu We love the flights here. It’s a delicious way to sample various drinky drinks! The margaritas are yum! Margarita Flight The eats here are listed as Small Bites, and they include The Famous Hollywood Brown Derby Cobb Salad and the lauded Derby Original Grapefruit Cake (served as part of the Dessert Trio). Brown Derby Lounge Eats I opted for three dishes — one an old standby and two new additions. Brown Derby Lounge Eats First up, the old standby: Derby Sliders. This duo includes a beef and a duck option. Derby Sliders The Wagyu Beef slider is the better of the two — by far. It’s Wagyu Beef with Cognac-Mustard Aïoli, Smoked Gouda Cheese, Bacon, and Avocado. The beef is flavorful, and the toppings are balanced and high quality. Wagyu Beef Slider It’s a delicious burger, with that Smoked Gouda taking on a starring role. Cross Section The Duck Confit slider is okay. It’s topped with Taleggio Cheese, Chipotle-Vegetable Slaw, Sweet Onion-Orange Conserve, and crispy Leeks. Although the ingredients should be stellar, they’re just not that exciting to eat, unfortunately. There’s little spice or flavor from the Chipotle-Vegetable Slaw, and the whole thing is a little muddled. Duck Confit Slider Note that you can pay $3.00 extra to get two wagyu sliders instead of one beef and one duck. I’d recommend it. Next up was Tamarind-Glazed Pork Belly. Any pork belly has instant appeal for me, and this one sounded great. At first glance, it had good color and some obvious moisture. Tamarind-Glazed Pork Belly The accompaniment includes Chorizo, Plantain, Sweet Potato Hash, and Mango Pico De Gallo. I was really hoping this would wow me, but it was a little meh. It had great sweetness from the glaze, and that was compelling; but otherwise, it’s nothing special. Pork Belly But the last item of the day? Guys. Seriously. Order three of these and call it a day: Andouille-Crusted Shrimp! Andouille. Crusted. Shrimp. Heaven. Andouille-Crusted Shrimp I remember having this on the Brown Derby menu long ago — but then it was one jumbo shrimp. I love the three smaller shrimp here. The spicy, flavor-packed shrimp are plated atop SUPER-flavorful Cotswold Cheddar Grits and are garnished with Micro Salad with Lime and Piment d’Espelette Oil. There’s also a dynamite slice of Andouille Sausage serving all kinds of looks and flavor. Andouille-Crusted Shrimp Completely stunning in its taste and appearance. This is a must — a MUST! But you will not want to share, so just order as many as you need. Yes, at $15 a plate it’s pricey. No doubt. But SO worth it IMO. Nosh or Not? Get glam at the Hollywood Brown Derby Lounge if: You want to enjoy the Restaurant’s top-notch dining but couldn’t score an ADR. You’re letting spontaneity guide your dining and need a walk-up option. You love interesting dining in a not-so-in-your-face-Disney locale. Your kid fell asleep in her stroller and you’re ready for a margarita. Go somewhere else if: You prefer a table service, dedicated indoor dining experience. You want the full Brown Derby Experience in the Restaurant proper. You just want to grab quick service and hit the Tower of Terror hard instead. Overall Can I have some more Andouille-Crusted Shrimp? Like, every day, all day? Please? The Brown Derby Lounge retains its appeal as a great place to drop in for a meal without an ADR, and with some outstanding food and drink options, we’ll be back! Basically tomorrow. Cruising Europe with Disney: Tips to Enhance Your Adventure
Disney4me posted a topic in Disney Blogs
Last week, we announced our return to Europe in the summer of 2019. That means both this summer and next, you have the chance to explore Old World charm, stunning scenery and historical sights from the Mediterranean to Northern Europe. Deciding which cruise itinerary is best for your family is your first big decision, and then starts the fun part: planning your adventures in our incredible destinations. As you explore what to see and do in each port, here are my top tips for how to enhance your Disney cruise in Europe… Do an Adventures by Disney Short Escape when sailing from Barcelona, Rome or Copenhagen. These three-night trips, hosted by two expert Adventure Guides, give you more time to explore the homeport before your voyage. What’s more, it gives your family a chance to get acclimated to a different time zone so you can start your cruise fresh. The best part is that your Adventure Guides plan all the details, so you get to sit back and relax as they show you the sights and arrange VIP experiences that allow you to experience memorable icons in ways that few can. Give each member of the family a vote in the Port Adventure selection. We offer excursions catered to all ages and interests, so whether you’re traveling with young kids, teenagers or just adults, there’s something for you. Depending on everyone’s preferences, consider choosing a different type of experience in each port, perhaps an active adventure one day and a relaxing excursion the next. Nature lover, history buff or culinary connoisseur? We have Port Adventures specifically for you. Add on a guided group excursion package with Adventures by Disney on select European cruises. Want to see the best of each destination with tour guides who knows each of you by name? Two knowledgeable and friendly Adventure Guides, the same throughout the cruise, will help you unlock the wonders of each port through immersive excursions and off-the-beaten-path adventures. In addition, you can enjoy exclusive receptions onboard and have access to concierge service from these dedicated guides during the voyage. Use your time onboard the ship to recharge. On our European voyages, the Disney Magic is your home away from home. Except you don’t have to do any of the cooking, cleaning or entertaining! After an excursion in port or during your days at sea, take advantage of all the ship has to offer with the all-included dining, pools, sports deck, Broadway-style musicals and much more. Let your kids play with their new friends in the youth club while you get pampered in the spa or enjoy a date night at Palo. Then return to the comfort of your stateroom to rest up for the next day’s adventures! Those of you who have cruised in Europe with us, what are your top tips to add more magic to the experience? “You’re given the form,” one of the celestial mentors says in Madeleine L’Engle's “A Wrinkle in Time.” “But you have to write the sonnet yourself.” This is how L’Engle described a free-will sort of life, in the novel she began in 1959. She endured 26 publishing rejections, got it into print in... View the full article

The Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival is in full bloom and this can only mean one thing: Spring is almost here! This is by far one of my favorite seasons, and I usually celebrate it with a little trip to Epcot for some spring extravaganza. My first stop is usually the Mexico Pavilion. There is so much to explore there! One of the first things I do is take a photo in front of The Three Caballeros topiaries! Jose, Donald y Panchito are so adorable that a photo there is a must during a visit to the festival. Then, you have to stop at the Jardin de Fiestas outdoor kitchen to savor some of their yummy offerings like a pork taco with apple relish, goat cheese and chile de árbol sauce… Or some tasty chilaquiles with ranchera sauce, chorizo, Mexican crema and cotija cheese. You can’t go wrong by ordering a Rose Margarita, because Rose everything is better! Last but not least, get lost in a beautiful area filled with orquídeas to learn about Mexican rainforests at the Tropical Rainforest Garden. For more information on the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival, that runs through May 28, visit epcotinspring.com View the full article

Last week Adventures by Disney announced their lineup of 2019 Short Escape trips, which can be booked as quick getaways to iconic destinations, or as a pre-cruise add-on to Disney Cruise Line sailings departing from Rome, Southern California, Copenhagen and more. Among their Short Escape options is a 3-night, 4-day vacation to one of my favorite cities, Barcelona! With its rich culture and unique architecture, it’s no wonder that Barcelona is one of Europe’s top destinations. From savoring delicious local cuisine to visiting beautiful historical sites, the Adventures by Disney Barcelona vacation packs the best of this remarkable region into an unforgettable adventure. The iconic designs of Barcelona’s beloved artist Gaudí come to life through privately guided tours of his most famous works of art in the city, including La Sagrada Família and Park Güell. Stroll back through time as you walk through the cobblestone streets of Old Barcelona, exploring the labyrinth of passageways and shops in the Gothic Quarter, and even take in a colorful flamenco show. Further outside the city, you’ll visit Montserrat, a mystical Benedictine monastery embedded in the mountains. See just a few the highlights of the Barcelona Short Escape in this video! Past Adventures by Disney guests can book 2019 Short Escapes today, while bookings open for all other guests tomorrow. View the full article

Guests visiting World Showcase at Epcot have delighted in the sights, sounds, and tastes of 11 themed pavilions for more than 35 years. Since opening in 1982, shopping has played an important part of the World Showcase experience. Recently, I caught up with Jennifer Furbee and Sylvie Brumbaugh, two Disney Parks Merchandise Cast Members who have the fun assignment of selecting merchandise for World Showcase shops. They gave me a behind-the-scenes look at how they create tangible memories for this immersive shopping destination at Walt Disney World Resort. “There’s always something new to discover,” explained Jennifer who has supported Mexico, Canada, and The American Adventure pavilions for three years. “For some guests, [World Showcase] may be the only time they visit a particular country. We want them to feel like they are actually visiting the country through the products we offer.” Developing and selecting new World Showcase merchandise takes several months. During that time, the product developers are researching popular trends, traveling to domestic and international destinations for inspiration, creating product assortments that support stories in each pavilion, and finalizing product samples to ensure they are ready for shops. Jennifer and Sylvie include many recognizable products from countries represented in World Showcase to create an authentic shopping experience for guests. A recent example is found in Germany pavilion where traditional German lederhosen and dirndl dresses create an instant Oktoberfest celebration. Other authentic products include color figurines from Mexico pavilion or decorative teapots from United Kingdom pavilion. The team also develops character-themed products with artwork inspired by World Showcase countries. New arrivals in Canada and Norway pavilions include country map collections where Chip and Dale, Goofy, and Mickey Mouse are shown exploring these vast nations. Sylvie, who began her Disney career as a Cultural Representative in the France pavilion during the late 1980s, has supported Germany, Italy, France, United Kingdom and Norway pavilions for seven years. To her, collaboration is key when creating memorable merchandise. “To bring these product stories to life, we work with tremendous partners including artists at Disney Creative Group, merchandise operations, location planning, merchandise presentation, and Walt Disney Imagineering,” said Sylvie. “We also periodically hold roundtable discussions with Cultural Representatives to get feedback about the merchandise we carry.” Sylvie has a unique perspective about her role with the World Showcase team. “It’s an incredible feeling developing products for the place where I started my career,” said Sylvie. “I have a wonderful sense of pride with every visit to World Showcase. I’m thankful to play a part in creating lasting memories for guests through merchandise.” View the full article

The Main Street Plaza Ice Cream Parlor in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World seems like it might be on a quest to constantly out-do itself. Plaza Ice Cream Parlor Because even with awesome treats like the Donut Sundae and the All-American Sundae, this favorite Main Street, U.S.A., ice cream spot just keeps hitting homeruns. This time, it’s an Apple Blossom Sundae, and we all need to make an immediate trip to the World so we can eat it. Apple Blossom Sundae and Brownie Sundae Oh, yeah: and there’s Dulce de Leche Ice Cream to put on top. What, what?! Dulce de Leche Ice Cream Let’s take a closer look. Basically you’ve got an apple pie as the base (although, if we’re getting technical, this is more of an apple galette, but it’s apples in a crust so we’re happy), and the pie is topped with a huge scoop of ice cream (your choice!). We went with that limited-time-only Dulce de Leche because yum! Apple Blossom Sundae with Dulce de Leche Ice Cream There’s also caramel sauce, a massive dollop of whipped cream, a shiny red cherry, and two chocolate Mickey ears. Apple Blossom Sundae The pie is served warm, so the ice cream melts. The Florida sun helps it along, too. But it’s all good because #meltedicecreamandpiearewhatsup. Melty Apple Blossom Sundae The combination here is fabulous — but if you go for traditional vanilla ice cream, we won’t stop you, because that would be outrageous as well. Apple Blossom Sundae Close Up Y’all, Apple Blossom Sundae. Go get one! But note that it’s not currently on the permanent menu, so we have no idea how long it will be around! Stay tuned! I literally did a double-take when I looked at my calendar this morning. How is it already March? But I’m glad it is! With spring on the horizon, it should come as no surprise that Spring Break style is already in full force here at Disney Springs. Not sure what ‘must-haves’ to add to your collection? I’d suggest a visit to Disney Springs where a walk through property will provide a look at the latest trends. Can’t make it in person? Below are the top three things on my own Spring Break wish list: New Mickey Ray-Ban sunglasses, available at Sunglass Icon on the West Side: You may recall that Sunglass Hut released a pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses featuring Mickey Mouse back in December. The product was such a hit that the company has developed a NEW design, set to debut this month on March 15, 2018. The Limited-Edition glasses feature Mickey Mouse on the Ray-Ban New Wayfarer, have a retail price of $193, and are etched with “M18” to commemorate their release date. (No discounts apply and there is a purchase limit of five pairs per guest.) New flip flops from Havaianas at The Landing: With options featuring Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Star Wars, Marvel and more, no doubt there is a perfect pair to flaunt your favorite Disney style. Havaianas are my favorite footwear for the pool or beach, but also great for a day in the Disney Theme Parks, too. Personally, I’m partial to the new line-up of princess-inspired styles, and I’m already dreaming of a pedicure to complement that Cinderella blue! Spirit Jerseys from Tren-D and World of Disney at the Marketplace: The ever-popular spirit jersey is now available in more varieties than ever before. Perfect for a breezy Spring Break evening, these long-sleeve shirts pair well with everything from jean shorts to cute skirts. I’m hoping to score a rose gold version spirit jersey soon, before it sells out! (This will likely come as no surprise, but the Disneyland design pictured below, is only available on the West Coast.) In the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing more on spring style, but in the meantime, follow us via Twitter and Instagram via @DisneySprings to see the latest fashionable finds from Disney Springs. The Mara in Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge is seriously one of my favorites, y’all! Mara Bakery The Mara From the faux canopy of trees above the seating area to the creative counter service food offerings to the awesome bakery, Mara is a great food destination in a resort that’s — let’s be honest — exploding with must-eats. Indoor Seating The Mara One of our favorite Walt Disney World desserts is found only here: the Peanut Butter Brownie. This baby is so good, we included her in our 2018 Cupcake Challenge despite it not technically being a cupcake. Yup, it’s that good. Peanut Butter Brownie So we’re always chomping at the bit to head back into Mara to see what’s occupying the bakery case, and on this visit, I discovered another delicious option. It may not surprise you to discover that it’s Carrot Cake. Mara Carrot Cake It’s visually impressive, with an (orange) white chocolate-dipped strawberry serving as the ‘carrot’ and and cookie crumbles serving as soil. It’s got an organic look that works with its location. Carrot Cake with “Carrot” on top Inside, the cake is dense and moist and full of flavor. Interior Mara Carrot Cake But you know me: it’s all about the frosting. Here, the cream cheese frosting is delicious. But there’s not nearly enough of it! Give me all the cream cheese frosting! Actually, we think most people — even if they’re not icing-insane like me — would want a little more of the sweet stuff on top to balance out the terrific cake. Close Up with the Mara Carrot Cake So this is almost a winner. And I would totally get it again even without an abundance of frosting because the flavors were awesome. But if I have to choose between this and the Peanut Butter Brownie? Apologies to the carrot cake gods but PB&B has got my heart at Mara. One of the most whimsical locations in Magic Kingdom Park is the Crystal Palace, a buffet with character where guests enjoy food, photos, laughs and autographs with Winnie the Pooh and his Pals. Just thinking about the Pooh’s Puffed French Toast served during breakfast makes me rumbly in my tumbly. Fans of Winnie the Pooh have something special to look forward to this summer; the willy, nilly, silly old bear will return to the big screen in Disney’s “Christopher Robin.” In the heartwarming live action adventure Disney’s “Christopher Robin,” the young boy who embarked on countless adventures in the Hundred Acre Wood with his band of spirited and lovable stuffed animals, has grown up and lost his way. Now it is up to his childhood friends to venture into our world and help Christopher Robin remember the loving and playful boy who is still inside. Now grown up, Christopher Robin is stuck in a job where he is overworked, underpaid and facing an uncertain future. He has a family of his own, but his work has become his life, leaving little time for his wife and daughter. Christopher has all but forgotten his idyllic childhood spent with a simple-minded, honey-loving stuffed bear and his friends. But when he is reunited with Winnie the Pooh, now tattered and soiled from years of hugs and play, their friendship is rekindled, reminding Christopher of the endless days of childlike wonder and make believe that defined his youth, when doing nothing was considered the very best something. Following an unfortunate mishap with Christopher Robin’s briefcase, Pooh and the rest of the gang including Piglet, Eeyore and Tigger, step out of the forest and venture into London to return the crucial possessions…because best friends will always be there for you. Enjoy the brand new trailer below! Disney’s “Christopher Robin” will release nationwide August 3, 2018. View the full article

Beginning today, you can now explore Disney Parks like never before – right from your phone or computer – on Google Street View. We’ve just launched a series of 360-degree panoramas featuring Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort locations you’ll want to check out to help plan your next vacation. The new Disney Parks imagery on Google Street View includes our theme parks, water parks as well as a variety of areas at Downtown Disney and Disney Springs. As you explore our Disney parks and destinations, you may run across some of your favorite Disney characters. We spotted Goofy at Disneyland – Can you find Donald or Pluto? To create the 360-degree imagery at Disney Parks, Google used Street View Trekker, a wearable backpack with a camera system on top. The Trekker is worn by an operator and is moved through walkways and structures, automatically gathering images. Imagery is then stitched together to create the 360-degree panoramas you see today. Here’s a list of the locations that the Trekker’s captured with links you can use to start planning your next Disney vacation: Disneyland park, Disneyland Resort Disney California Adventure park Downtown Disney District Magic Kingdom Park, Walt Disney World Resort Disney Springs – Dining, Retail Locations Disney’s Hollywood Studios Pandora – The World of Avatar Disney’s Animal Kingdom Epcot ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park Disney’s Blizzard Beach Water Park Disney Parks imagery is also being featured on Google’s Street View gallery page along with breathtaking natural wonders of the world. Oprah Winfrey is promoting “A Wrinkle in Time” heavily, but the child actors are the real stars of the Disney movie, she told “CBS This Morning” on Tuesday. Storm Reid, Deric McCabe and Levi Miller are the stars, Winfrey said. “It’s not my movie, it’s Storm’s movie,” Winfrey said. “It’s the story... View the full article

The Yacht Club’s Ale & Compass Restaurant hit the Disney World dining scene just this past November. Learn About: Ale & Compass Restaurant Disney World Restaurants But our first visit was for lunch, so it’s time to step back in for our dinner review. And since there are some fairly major menu changes from day to night at this still-new spot, it’s a great reason to check it out again. Now, before we move forward with the review, just a reminder that the Ale & Compass Restaurant is one third of an entirely new Ale & Compass dining concept at Disney World’s Yacht Club, so it’s not to be confused with the Ale & Compass Lounge and The Market at Ale & Compass (a Counter Service meets Grab-and-Go setup). The Ale & Compass Restaurant is the Table Service component of this trio, serving Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner (each one Table Service Credit on the Disney Dining Plan). Ale & Compass Restaurant sign by the entrance And now that we’ve got the details out of the way, let’s check out the digs! Atmosphere We have a full tour of Ale & Compass Restaurant available from our first visit, and you can peruse it by clicking here. Walking Into Ale & Compass That said, the ambience does change a fair bit from day into evening, with the natural light from the nearby windows gone, and the artificial lighting in the restaurant itself greatly reduced. Central Dining Room in the evening It does lend a bit of a more elegant feel for an evening visit in what otherwise is a fairly minimalistic setting in terms of decor, which relies on a blue-gray color palette and clean lines. Central Dining Room in the evening And in this central seating area, you can steal a glimpse or two at the semi-open kitchen featuring its hearth oven. Approaching the Hearth Oven Outside of the central seating area, there are more tables lining the space, and with their higher chairs, this perimeter area leans towards a more on-trend look. Perimeter Seating Overall, it’s an entirely different feel from when the space operated as the Captain’s Grille prior to its transformation. But the changes are also fairly significant when it comes to eating here, so let’s look over the menu next. Eats The cuisine at Ale & Compass focuses on both surf and turf options, inspired by New England comfort food and gastropub eats. I had mentioned that the Dinner Menu differs from the Lunch Menu, which is true when it comes to the Main Plates available. The Starters, however, are similar to what you’ll find at at lunch, which includes options for seafood fans as well as landlubbers. Dinner Starters The primary difference with the Starters menu is that the Hearth Oven Pies, which are considered Main Plates during lunch, are covered under Starters for dinner. Again, it’s the Entrees where you’ll see the change, which are almost all different offerings compared to lunch. The Coastal Clambake is the headliner, and it’s rounded out with further seafood selections along with plenty of choices for carnivores. Dinner Main Plates A unique feature at Ale & Compass during both lunch and dinner are the vegetarian and vegan options, which are not simply afterthoughts on the menu here. (We were pleasantly surprised with the Grilled Plant-based “Bacon Cheeseburger” on our lunch outing.) Though we had tried the Parker House Rolls and Spreads before, we grabbed them again to see if they were as soft and tasty (thanks to the provided accompaniments of Bacon Jam, Pub Cheese, and Citrus Butter) as our prior visit. Parker House Rolls and Spreads The answer? Yes. These warm rolls are simply satisfying, further flavored with salt and glistening from a brush of butter. But, are they twelve bucks worth of good? Honestly, I’m already at the point where I don’t think a meal here is complete without them. And the pub cheese certainly makes them worth more than a couple of bucks. But $12…well, you’re going to have to make your own call on that one. Pub Cheese On to the Main Plates! We’ll start with the vegetarian Four-Cheese Ravioli, which comes swimming in a pool of butternut squash puree and topped with a ton of sautéed mushrooms. Four-Cheese Ravioli Wow. We’re starting off with a bang here. The plentiful ravioli are rich in both taste and texture, with the flavor of sage-brown butter coming through with every bite. The butternut squash puree lends an autumnal feel…which makes me think this particular dish will change up in the near future. At Disney, butternut squash usually means Fall menu. But you never know! Mushrooms topping the Four-Cheese Ravioli Even among pasta dishes in the Italian restaurants in Disney World, I think this really is a standout dish. Now, you know we love us a good plate of Fried Chicken and Waffles here at the DFB! Fried Chicken and Waffles Unfortunately — and I have to say it — this is not one of those good plates of Fried Chicken and Waffles. The Ale & Compass version includes two large pieces of Fried Chicken served on a large Belgian waffle and accompanied with house-made pickles and orange-honey chili. Our server asked if we wanted syrup for pouring (um….YES), so that was delivered separately. So, all the components and more are there. The trouble lies with the chicken. Fried Chicken and Waffles It looked great, I know. But it was super dry, and the batter was surprisingly bland. So don’t judge a book by its cover! But we’re back on the upswing here with the 16-oz T-Bone, which arrived topped with plenty of butter and garlic. Oh, and those Truffle Fries served on the side (along with the watercress salad)? YES, please! They were fantastic. T-Bone Steak All that butter, garlic, and herbs only complemented — rather than distracted from — the steak cooked to my medium rare request. While this didn’t crack my top 5 steaks in Disney World and isn’t a destination dish, it was a decent choice if you happen to be at Ale & Compass and are craving a steak. We’re back with the same options as lunch for the Dessert Menu (and you can check out the Twelve-Layer Chocolate Cake in our lunch review). Dessert Menu We couldn’t wait to get these puddings again. Ever since my experience with the Butterscotch Pudding at the Waldorf Astoria Orlando’s La Luce, I’ve been careful to never underestimate a pudding for dessert. And these are pretty great as well. Trio of Puddings The rich chocolate pudding is a solid offering, but it’s accompanied by a butterscotch that tastes like it has a hint of Irish cream combined with — no joke — a bit of cookie dough. It is THAT flavorful. And the fruity blackberry more closely resembles a sorbet with its bright flavor. Now, in looking over the dessert menu, I did have to ask… why is the “curd” in the Lemon “Curd” Meringue Pie listed in quotation marks on the menu? Well, because it’s really not a curd at all. Lemon “Curd” Meringue Pie This little “pie” (the quotation marks here are mine), is nearly a replica of the desserts at Satu’li Canteen in Animal Kingdom. Only, Satu’li does them better. The lemon flavor is definitely present in this dish, but the texture is closer to a cheesecake than a custard. It’t not bad; it would just honestly be better to have a nice bowl of lemon curd and whipped cream, and once I read it on the menu, that’s what I wanted. Plus, this thing is teeny. Just look at it on the plate. Inside the Lemon “curd” And the pickled blueberries? Just NO. Blueberries are not meant to be pickled. IMHO. But, just like with the Main Plates, we’re going right back up with our final dessert option: the Apple Tart. Apple Tart There are two highlights with this dish: first, the thick, buttery round of crust that makes the tart. And second, the surprisingly tasty little scoop of Apple Cider Sorbet. It’s just really enjoyable. Now, it’s definitely too small for the price, so you’ll have to tackle that issue on your own. So, that wraps up our second visit to Ale & Compass Restaurant in Disney’s Yacht Club Resort. Nosh or Not? You’ll want to visit Ale & Compass if: You are a guest at the Yacht or Beach Club (or nearby BoardWalk Inn) and are looking for a nice, relaxing Table Service meal without traveling too far. You’ve got both seafood fans and landlubbers in your group and want to please both…without traveling too far. You’re in the market for a decent steak but don’t care to dine in a Signature Restaurant to get one. And you don’t want to travel too far. (Basically, there are better restaurants for all of these things; but if you happen to be IN the Yacht Club, this spot is serviceable.) You might want to pass on Ale & Compass if: You (or your kiddos) prefer immersive theming or a really lively atmosphere when you’re dining in Disney. The Yacht Club is simply too far out of your way in regards to your Disney World vacation plans. You’re not currently IN the Yacht Club. Overall As home to one of the Disney World Convention Centers, the Yacht Club found the need to step up their game with regards to offerings geared towards those convention guests, relying less on whimsical theming, and more on refined dining options that serve their purpose. But the nice thing is, the new Ale & Compass spots serve their purposes well, and also provide some terrific options for any guest, no matter what the purpose of their visit. I wouldn’t go so far as to call Ale & Compass “destination dining,” but it’s not intended to be. What it IS is a good, solid option for guests at the Yacht Club (or in the direct vicinity of the Beach Club or the BoardWalk Inn), and and there’s enough that’s decent on the menu to allow the spot to hold its own in this respect. So basically — in a nutshell — eat here if it’s convenient, but otherwise, there are likely better restaurants to suit your purposes.
