Il Mulino is a hidden gem of Walt Disney World dining. Learn About: Il Mulino New York Trattoria Swan&Dolphin Restaurants Disney World Restaurants Located in the Swan Hotel in the Epcot resort area, Il Mulino is off the typical beaten path. But for those that find it, it’s often a meal to remember. Il Mulino is an Italian restaurant modeled after the original and much-lauded Il Mulino in New York City’s Greenwich Village neighborhood. And you see a bit of that in the decor — but you taste a lot of it in the food. Menu items derive from the Abruzzo region of Italy and as such are comprised of an eclectic mix of ingredient from the mountains, the sea, and the pastures. But origins aside, Il Mulino just serves really good food. Il Mulino Menu Cover Atmosphere It’s been several years since my last visit to Il Mulino, and in that time, a lot has changed at the Swan and Dolphin Hotels. New dining and drinking spots have opened, there’s a new executive chef overseeing the seventeen (17!!) dining establishments in the two resorts, and the Swan and Dolphin Classic continues to wow with new (and returning) tastes year after year. The entrance to Il Mulino will see changes in the near future, but inside, the restaurant’s lounge and seating areas are the same industrial-meets-rustic design. Bar at Il Mulino Seating varies from traditional four-tops to large pub-height tables. A grid of windows separates the diners from the open kitchen, giving the restaurant terrific energy. Seating at Il Mulino Table settings are simple but warm. Seating at Il Mulino Even lighting in the open kitchen is warm, letting diners know they’re not just strangers — they’re family. Open Kitchen And what better way to show a family member you care than to feed them? Eats Il Mulino features traditional Italian courses like Antipasti, Zuppe, Pasta, and more. I was anxious to eat some old favorites and try some new dishes. We ordered the Insalata Caesar — a classic Caesar Salad. It’s not knocking anyone’s socks off, but if you like Caesar Salad, this one will satisfy. Insalata Caesar Salad aside, I knew I couldn’t come to Il Mulino without ordering the Polpette al Forno: a trio of flavorful (seriously!) meatballs. These are herbacious, very slightly sweet, and fully delicious. Do NOT skip the meatballs. Polpette al Forno Another favorite from my last visit, the Spaghetti Carbonara (like all the pastas here) is available in a half portion. This is a strategy I recommend for those with small appetites or those who want to try more than one dish. Either way, this buttery, salty Carbonara WAS INCREDIBLE. My husband and I were sharing it, and I’m pretty sure we were fighting the whole time for the larger portion! I’m dreaming about going back for more…so, um, get this on your bucket list. Half order of Spaghetti Carbonara The first new-to-me dish is Gnocchi Bolognese. These potato dumplings are soft and pillowy — just what you want from gnocchi. The sauce is rich, so while this is delicious, it’s quite heavy. Share this one or get a half order (or come ready to fill up!). Gnocchi Bolognese The sleeper hit of the night was the Pollo Fra Diavolo! This dish with chicken, sausage, vegetables, and spicy tomato sauce really packed some heat — and you know I love that! That said, if you are spice-averse, be warned: this is very spicy. That spice does not detract from the flavor at all, but it will keep you on your toes. This is also a great option for those eating low-carb. While there are some carbs in the sauce and veggies, there’s no pasta here. Pollo Fra Diavolo This was a delicious and multifaceted meal that did not disappoint at any turn. In fact, I’d order any of these dishes again — even the gnocchi, which I would plan to share or maybe halve and pair with a lighter appetizer or entree. Nosh or Not? Say buongiorno to Il Mulino if: You love Italian food and want to try arguably the best at Walt Disney World. You’re staying at the Swan & Dolphin and want a refined table service meal. You’ve got a mission to try all of the many Italian food options in the World. Try something else if: Italian food just isn’t your jam. You don’t have time for a table service meal. You’re not planning to be in the area of the Swan & Dolphin and don’t want to travel for a meal. Overall Italian restaurants have easily doubled in number over the past year, with the bulk of them being conveniently located in Disney Springs. (We’re looking at you, Terralina Crafted Italian, Maria & Enzo’s, and Hideaway Tunnel Bar!) But if you can fit it into your schedule, a trip to Il Mulino for terrific Italian food is worth the effort. This is diverse, regional cuisine done exceptionally well. Have you tried Il Mulino? We’ve already been celebrating Mickey a lot today (which is a good idea ANY day) with the new Mickey Balloon Popcorn Bucket in Magic Kingdom. But today brings another way to celebrate our favorite mouse… this time, with Amorette’s Patisserie in Disney Springs! Mickey Ice Cream Bar Cake ©Disney You can now place an order by phone (find the information at the end of this post) for the new Mickey Premium Ice Cream Bar Cake. Fillings include chocolate chiffon, milk chocolate mousse, and even ice cream vanilla mousse. Note that the “ice cream vanilla mousse” is not actual ice cream, as this is not an ice cream cake. It’s simply made with vanilla ice cream powder to match the vanilla ice cream flavor inside a regular Mickey Ice Cream Bar. We noticed a similar design last summer, but the new version seems to have received a bit of a makeover in form and flavor. Mickey Bar Cake 2018 The Mickey Premium Ice Cream Bar Cake is $60 and can serve 8-10 people. Interested guests may call Amorette’s Patisserie at (407) 934-3500 to place an order with a minimum of two days in advance. Don’t Miss Out on Any Disney Fun! It’s time to head to Flavortown with another visit to Guy Fieri-helmed Chicken Guy! in Disney Springs. This quick service spot arrived on the scene last August, and we thought it was great and affordably-priced. But honestly, over the past year it’s become a must-do for me on my Disney trips. I can’t stay away! Chicken Guy! I love just about everything here — sandwiches, tenders, fries, mac and cheese, sauces… Buffalo Sauce! OK, I’m particularly drawn to the sauces…as you can see. But don’t worry: you can get more than Buffalo. I just don’t. The crispy Tenders are satisfyingly crunchy and flavorful, and if you’re going in for the dip, these will work perfectly. Fried Chicken Tenders But I wasn’t just popping in for a friendly visit with this guy: Guy Fieri’s newest restaurant is Chicken Guy! I was after some loaded eats: Fries and Mac ‘N’ Cheese, to be specific. And they were goooooood. The star of both: SMC — Super Melty Cheese sauce. Loaded Mac ‘N’ Cheese and Loaded Fries Read on for a SMC tip you’ll definitely want to tuck away for safe keeping! Let’s start with the Loaded Fries, which are topped with crispy tenders, bacon, scallions, and SMC. These are awe-some. Crispy seasoned fries, salty bacon, fresh scallions — and SMC! It’s that cheese sauce that really kicks this up a notch. Loaded Fries with SMC And the Loaded Mac Daddy Mac ‘N’ Cheese also benefits from the SMC, which was a little surprising since it’s already cheesy, right? But this dish — a base of Mac Daddy Mac ‘N’ Cheese with crispy tenders, bacon, and scallions — is so creamy and rich with the extra cheese sauce. Loaded Mac ‘N’ Cheese Check out that cheese action! Sublime. But here’s a tip: even if you order the plain, un-loaded Mac Daddy Mac ‘N’ Cheese (always available as a side), request some SMC. You can add as much or as little as you want (you’ll want the whole cup, trust!), and you can up the flavor quotient of the sometimes-bland plain mac and cheese! Loaded Mac ‘N’ Cheese with added SMC The Loaded Mac Daddy Mac ‘N’ Cheese isn’t always on the menu (it was on my visit, but it’s currently off the online menu), and when you find it, it’ll be listed as a Shareable Side. And it totally is (unless you’re planning to eat it as your meal, in which case you still might not be able to finish it all…). But when you spot it: go for it and thank us later! One of our favorite spots, Beaches and Cream Soda Shop at Disney’s Beach Club Resort, will be closing in August for a three month refurbishment. Beaches and Cream The super popular restaurant is primarily known for ice cream (especially the Famous Kitchen Sink and even boozy shakes for adults), but it’s also a great place to grab a burger, grilled cheese, and other diner favorites. Beaches and Cream Adult Shakes and Floats at Beaches & Cream Grilled Cheese with Tomato Soup Disney World Guest Services has confirmed that Beaches & Cream is slated for a reopening sometime in December. And guests looking for ice cream will want to know that there will be a satellite ice cream location set up at the Yacht & Beach Club (though it is not anticipated that the Kitchen Sink will be one of the options). The Epcot International Festival of the Arts will run through February 25, which means there’s plenty of time left to enjoy everything the festival has to offer – including some of the can’t-miss seminars offered at the Odyssey Festival Showplace. This year’s seminar lineup includes art seminars in everything from photography to pop-up book design, as well as deep dives into different aspects of Disney history, including traditional Disney animation, 3D storytelling at Walt Disney World and more. Earlier this month, Jeff Kurtti, author and Disney historian, appeared at the festival to discuss his new book, Travels With Walt, which features rare and never-before-published photographs along with eyewitness recollections and anecdotes detailing Walt’s frequent excursions around the globe. Check out the video above to hear what he loves about this festival – and view a full video of his seminar here. And check out the full list of upcoming offerings here. View the full article

Tangaroa Terrace in Disneyland Hotel closed to begin a rather lengthy refurbishment in September 2018. Following the closure, Disney announced that the space would reopen in early 2019 as Tangaroa Terrace, Tropical Bar and Grill. Tangaroa Terrace Though an official reopening date has not yet been announced, we have noticed hours listed on the Tangaroa Terrace page on the Disneyland website coming up again for this coming Tuesday, February 5th, from 6:30 AM – 11:00 PM. Tangaroa Terrace page screenshot Note that the page does not yet reflect the updated name and still has a message informing guests to “please check back,” so there may be updates to this reopening date. Tangaroa Terrace page screenshot But for now, it appears that we may be able to check out the enhancements like a new outdoor bar and refreshed patio and indoor space (plus a dedicated window for serving Dole Whip) as soon as next week! Alien Pizza Planet is getting into the spirit of Get Your Ears On with three specialty items — two winners and a dud. Our Disneyland correspondent (HI!, @DiningInDisney!), give us the a slice of the action. Alien Pizza Planet First up: the Buffalo Chicken Pizza. This is pizza topped with fried chicken breast bits, Buffalo sauce, ranch dressing, fresh carrots and celery, and a creamy Buffalo sauce. Buffalo Chicken Pizza We appreciate the creativity of putting literal fresh veggies on top of the pizza, but looking at it, we’re definitely missing some of the sauces they claim are on it. Maybe some creamy ranch would help? Buffalo Chicken Pizza While our taste-testers were a bit divided on this one, nobody thought it was a must-get. Heather says there’s no definitive reason why this doesn’t work, but for her, it’s one of the least successful dishes of the celebration so far! Bummer! We say skip the Buffalo Chicken Pizza and go for the Bowtie Pasta instead. Both of our taste-testers loved this one! The sauce is a blush sauce — creamy tomato, basically — and the dish includes some flavorful sausage and balls of mozzarella (like Minnie’s polka dots!). Plus: Bowtie Bread! It’s delicious and cute! Bowtie Pasta The sweet Get Your Ears On treat here is the S’mores Parfait. This is a photogenic dessert — and tasty, too! S’mores Parfait Even the little green men are into it. S’mores Parfait The S’mores Parfait consists of layers of chocolate pudding, chocolate cake, tons of marshmallow filling, graham crackers, and thick chocolate ganache. S’mores Parfait It’s topped with graham cracker crumbs, chocolate chips, whipped cream, and a toasted marshmallow. It’s a pretty standard dessert, but done well and worth getting if you need a sweet treat. S’mores Parfait You can also pick up a Little Green Alien Straw and Backpack Clip here! S’mores Parfait All-in-all, Pizza Planet is a hit for Get Your Ears On (just avoid that, um, pizza part)! We hope the pasta and parfait stick around a little longer because they’re terrific! Have you taken an evening stroll around Pixar Pier at Disney California Adventure park? The new Pixar lamp shining atop the Pixar Pier marquee is really magical – it’s icing on the Pixar Pier cake and looked beautiful at dusk against a dramatic sky. I also couldn’t leave the pier without making a picture of the new Lamplight Lounge and Pixar Pal-A-Round lit up against those clouds. Sunshine Seasons is one of our favorite quick service dining spots in Epcot. Located in Future World’s Land pavilion, Sunshine Seasons is known for serving up some fresh options that come right out of Living with the Land’s greenhouses, and we’ve found some great vegetarian and vegan options here over the years. Sunshine Seasons sign in The Land Pavilion And now there’s a little sweet love for those who eat a plant-based diet: a Vegan Cupcake! This cupcake is irresistible upon sight with its dripping dark chocolate and bright cherry. Vegan Cupcake So you know we had to try it right away. We’re happy to say that that giant mound of frosting on top is delicious — barely distinguishable from regular frosting! And the chocolate is thick, super-sweet fudge! Vegan Cupcake The cake was very moist and flavorful. And inside? That’s pineapple and coconut! Yum! The combo of sweet vanilla frosting, dark chocolate, and pineapple really works. Vegan Cupcake Y’all, whether you’re vegan or not, this is just an awesome cupcake! But for those of you living that plant-based life, you’re in for a tremendous treat! And if you want to see why we love Sunshine Seasons for vegan and vegetarian diners, check out the DFB Guide video of our favorite veggie-friendly restaurants!
