There are sure signs Hollywood Studios is getting ready for Lightning McQueen to race into the park on March 31! And by signs, we mean literal signs! Coming Soon! Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy!! Ka-Chow! Some new posters have popped up at Sunset Showcase promoting the brand new attraction — and confirming its location. If you aren’t certain where Sunset Showcase is, it’s tucked away at the end of Sunset Boulevard past the entrance to the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster. With that location, it means the current Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster FastPass+ line is closed and has been re-located to accommodate the new Lightning McQueen entrance. There’s a new sheriff in town on this popcorn bucket in Hollywood Studios! But Woody isn’t the only Pixar character on these souvenir containers! Howdy from Woody on the new Popcorn Buckets These buckets star an abundance of Pixar characters all over Disney World. There’s Wall-E‘s Eve at Space Mountain, Woody, Slinky Dog at where else but Slinky Dog Dash, and we even see the silhouette of Big Thunder Mountain. With a turn of the bucket we see the house from Up taking flight, the Tree of Life, Rex, Heimlich from A Bug’s Life, and Fro-Zone. Rex says Hello! The last group we see featured are a high-flying Jack-Jack, Luxo the Pixar ball, Remy snacking on that awesome flavored popcorn in Epcot (Remy used DFB’s tip to mix the flavors!), Epcot’s Norway and France pavilions represented, plus Cinderella Castle. That’s right, Tangaroa Terrace Tropical Bar & Grill has officially reopened at the Disneyland Hotel at the Disneyland Resort! After an exciting refurbishment, the fast-casual restaurant has a vibrant new look, expanded offerings and is back and serving up made-to-order dishes, signature tiki cocktails, Dole Whip and more! Tangaroa Terrace, inspired by Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room, is the perfect tropical complement to the mid-century modern architecture of the Disneyland Hotel. This island paradise combines traditional motifs from many Pacific islands such as Hawaii, Tahiti, Fiji, Sumatra and New Guinea. Inside, new décor details feature a colorful tropical mural with “hidden” tiki room birds (can you find them all?), bamboo accents, exotic stone countertops and glass fish net float lights, with open air views of the pool. Outdoors, guests enjoy an expanded new patio with brightly colored rattan lounge chairs, tiki bar stools and a communal table for fun, inviting ways to enjoy sunshine and the island vibes. Throughout the day, guests can snack on freshly prepared hot and cold dishes all day long. For breakfast (served until 11am), chow down on a classic Breakfast Platter with scrambled eggs, bacon, and hash browns or bite into a Breakfast Sandwich with kālua-style pulled pork, fried egg, hash browns, and gravy. Sweet options include the Açai Chia Breakfast Bowl with seasonal fruit and granola and Pineapple Upside Down Pancakes. One of my FAVORITE breakfast dishes of all time can also be found here – Tangaroa Toast! This brick toast comes coated in cinnamon sugar, and topped with bananas Foster, whipped cream, bananas, and toasted coconut. If your mouth is watering from the breakfast menu, just wait until you feast your eyes (and taste buds) on the lunch and dinner menu! Sharable options include dishes such as the Kālua-style Poutine (crispy crinkle fries topped with pork, cheese curds, gravy, pickled onions, and Fresno chiles – YUM) and the Pu Pu Platter, which is another one of my favorites! The platter comes with Chili-Garlic Edamame, Pork Gyoza (pork and vegetable pot stickers), Sweet-and-Spicy Chicken Wings, and Panko-crusted Long Beans served with togarashi aïoli; all four can also be ordered individually. And if nachos are more your style, you can snack on the Shipwreck Nachos topped with kālua-style pulled pork, pineapple salsa, hoisin sauce, togarashi aïoli, and barbecue sauce. And of course, you can’t go wrong with the Chili-Garlic Edamame (it’s included in the Pu Pu Platter, but you know you’re going to want more!) – young soybeans steamed and tossed with chili-garlic sauce – or even the Fried Spam Musubi served with teriyaki sauce! Other dishes include a Lentil Garden Bowl with brown rice, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, and onions tossed in coconut curry; the Tangaroa Salad with sautéed shrimp; and an Angus 1/3 lb. Hawaiian Cheeseburger served with grilled pineapple, Applewood-smoked bacon, Havarti cheese, togarashi aïoli, and teriyaki sauce. Kids can enjoy their own smaller-portioned versions of these tropical bites. For breakfast, the Kid’s Breakfast Platter and the Kid’s Pineapple Upside-Down Pancake are great options. They can even get the Kid’s Mickey-shaped Tangaroa Toast! All three dishes are served with turkey bacon and fresh fruit. For lunch and dinner, the kiddos can munch on a yummy Grilled Salmon Bowl, a Kid’s Cheeseburger, and the ever-so-popular and tasty Chicken Breast Nuggets. The restaurant also offers a newly-enhanced marketplace for grab-and-go pastries and snacks, specialty coffees, pineapple Dole Whip soft serve, Dole Whip floats and Dole Whip floats with a splash of rum, plus a full bar of island cocktails. Mobile ordering is available at this location as well, so if you’re on-the-go, you can enjoy the convenience of ordering and paying for your meal via the Disneyland Resort app without having to wait in line! We’ve spotted the Epcot, Animal Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, and Resort Hotel versions of the new reusable shopping bags that are popping up in each park and resort. Now we’ve found Magic Kingdom’s reusable shopping bags! Magic Kingdom Reusable Shopping Bags The bags are a part of Disney’s efforts to reduce the use of single use plastic products in the parks — including shopping bags and straws. The Magic Kingdom bag highlights three classic attractions — Space Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, and “it’s a small world” — and like the other park bags also includes a giant, smiling Mickey Mouse. The reverse side of the bag stars, of course, Cinderella Castle with fireworks in the background. Magic Kingdom Reusable Shopping Bags Like all the other bags, the prices range from $1-$2 depending on the size you select. Magic Kingdom Reusable Shopping Bags In our experience, the bags still aren’t being “pushed” by cast members. There’s no problem with still receiving a regular plastic bag for your purchase. In fact, we’ve actually had a cast member ask us if we wanted them to put the reusable bag we were purchasing into a regular plastic bag. So…seems like plastic bags are still safe for the moment. Disney’s Hollywood Studios is one of my favorite parks. I first visited on opening day – May 1, 1989 – and can hardly believe it’s been 30 years! There’s always something new to see and do, and now more than ever, Disney’s Hollywood Studios is the perfect place to step into the amazing worlds of Pixar stories like “The Incredibles,” “Monsters, Inc.,” “Toy Story,” and very soon, “Cars.” An Incredible Celebration brings a Municiberg city block from Disney•Pixar’s “Incredibles 2” to life with a hometown celebration honoring the city’s super heroes – and the hero in all of us! Get caught up in the excitement of “The Super Shindig” featuring Mr. Incredible, Mrs. Incredible and Frozone. The third Chinese New Year at Shanghai Disney Resort was marked this week with a traditional Chinese eye-dotting ceremony. To spread good luck and cheer to guests and cast members, the resort’s general manager Philippe Gas dotted the eyes of two lions to awaken them for the New Year. Chinese New Year marks an important time of year for families and friends to reunite together, and Shanghai Disney Resort provides more opportunities than ever before to experience the unique traditions that hold a special place in the hearts of Chinese people. Disney Parks is a shopper’s paradise with hundreds of unique stores that offer unforgettable souvenirs and memorable gifts for loved ones. Guests visiting Disneyland Resort or Walt Disney World Resort now have a new option for carrying home purchases with the release of colorful reusable shopping bags. Available for a nominal fee and offered in three sizes, these reusable shopping bags are made of 80% recycled materials, and are similar to reusable bags first introduced at the World of Disney stores last fall. Bags will feature Disney character designs mixed with recognizable icons from Disney Parks. At Disneyland Resort, Guests will find four bags – one each for Disneyland park and Disney California Adventure park; a bag for Downtown Disney District and Resort Hotels; and the current World of Disney bag. At Walt Disney World Resort, there will be seven bags introduced: a bag at each of the four theme parks; a bag for owned-and-operated shops at Disney Springs; a shared Walt Disney World Resort-inspired bag for Resort Hotels, ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex and other merchandise locations; and the existing World of Disney bag. The 2019 Epcot International Festival of the Arts, going on now until February 25, 2019, is a celebration of visual, culinary, and performing arts from around the world, that offers artful activities for the entire family—from special entertainment and interactive workshops to immersive art experiences and world-class cuisine. Naturally, the philosophical intent of this festival reaches to core philosophies at the heart of Epcot and its creation, and thus, to the rich legacy of Walt Disney himself that we still enjoy today and every day, all around the world. When Walt envisioned his Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow (EPCOT) in 1966, its purpose was to be a “real city that would never cease to be a blueprint of the future,” designed to create new and better ideas about planning and living for American cities. The ideals and philosophies of the “EPCOT idea” at the heart of Walt Disney’s original Florida plans became the core of the one-of-a-kind park, Epcot, when it opened in 1982. Among Walt’s many ideas that were translated and reimagined into the Epcot park concept was the notion of a permanent international showcase. Throughout his life Walt traveled the world, exporting the goodwill and good works of his creative organization—and brought home many aspects of his enconters for audiences in the United States to experience and share. Walt was also influenced by World’s Fairs throughout his life, from his own father’s work on the World Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, to the Century of Progress Exposition in the same city in 1933; the 1939 World’s Fair in New York and the 1939-40 Golden Gate International Exposition in San Francisco; the Brussels Expo ’58 (his first attraction outside of a park was the Circarama film America the Beautiful in the United States pavilion there); and of course, in creating four of the most popular attractions at the 1964-1965 New York World’s Fair—Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln, it’s a small world, the General Electric Carousel of Progress, and the Ford Magic Skyway. Within Walt’s original “planned city” concept was a central, enclosed “downtown,” built around “shops and restaurants that reflect the culture and flavor of locations ’round the world.” Concept art of the era shows the area with representations of individual countries, outfitted with decorative and thematic references to each of the exotic locales. This concept eventually evolved into the World Showcase area of the Epcot park. As Epcot plans evolved into a solidified destination park idea in the mid-1970s, the idea of international arts and culture as one of its key attractions remained constant. The 1975 Annual Report to the shareholders of Walt Disney Productions promised many familiar aspects of Epcot today: “Beyond the scientific and technological aspects of EPCOT the project holds great promise for the advancement of international cooperation and understanding. The World Showcase, planned for opening in late 1979, will be devoted to this goal. An on-going international exposition…the World Showcase will communicate the culture, heritage, history, technology, trade, tourism, and future goals of the participating nations…there will be a major theater for performances by international celebrities and entertainment groups, and where parades, pageants and special events will be staged by entertainers from the participating nations. Although these national pavilions may vary in size, each will enjoy equal facade exposure to the guest…Unlike a world’s fair, it will offer participating countries a permanent installation for such features as themed restaurants and shops, product exhibits, industrial displays, cultural presentations, a trade center, and even special facilities for business meetings…National musical groups or other performing artists could present special entertainment on a continuing basis.” These specific attractions and the ideals behind them remained intact to the opening of Epcot and beyond, and to this day, the cultural riches of our world neighbors—people, architecture, crafts, music, and art—are available for daily exploration around World Showcase at Epcot. The two most recent World Showcase art exhibits are the Gods of the Vikings exhibit at the Stave Church Gallery in Norway, which delves into the myths and legends that guided the Vikings, beginning with the creation myth of the world created from the bones of giants; and Creating Tradition: Innovation and Change in American Indian Art, which showcases authentic historical Native artifacts alongside contemporary works of American Indian art, on display at The American Heritage Gallery inside the American Adventure pavilion. The time-honored traditions of Día de Muertos—one of Mexico’s most important holidays—are on display at ‘Remember Me!’ La Celebración del Día de Muertos, a colorful exhibit featuring the work of prominent Mexican and Mexican-American artists; in the Mexico Folk Art Gallery in the Mexico pavilion. The Bijutsu-kan Gallery, located at the Japan pavilion, delves into the origin and evolution of kawaii—the “cute” culture that has become a way of life in modern Japan—in Kawaii: Japan’s Cute Culture. The Gallery of Arts and History in Morocco houses the exhibit Moroccan Style: The Art of Personal Adornment and see how the unparalleled artistry and craftsmanship of Moroccan decorative arts are a visual representation of cultural identity. Finally, again demonstrating that Disney is, in and of itself, a culture of the world, is the exhibit Inside Shanghai Disney Resort, in House of the Whispering Willows, featuring the confluence of the cultures of Disney and China trough exclusive artwork from the newest Disney theme park, demonstrating how Walt Disney Imagineers helped bring to life an authentically Disney experience that remains distinctly Chinese. When you think about fine pastries at Walt Disney World, you probably think of Les Halles Boulangerie-Patisserie in Epcot’s France, where napoleons and eclairs seem right at home. Or Amorette’s Patisserie, where everything is perfectly crafted into a work of art. But Trolley Car Café, the last bastion of pastries in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, has introduced new pastries that will transport you to France via Hollywood Boulevard. Trolley Car Cafe We spotted these new pastries this afternoon, and we had to share them with you ASAP. In addition to the usual brownies, cookies, and cupcakes available at Trolley Car, guests can now select from a Raspberry Napoleon, an Apple Almond Tart, Latte Cake, and a Chocolate Pecan Tart. You can see why we weren’t able to pick just one… New Pastries at Trolley Car Cafe The Raspberry Napoleon is a fantastic combination of sweet, tart raspberry buttercream and perfectly crispy puff pastry. Raspberry Napoleon This one impresses from first glance, the ribbon of pink buttercream really standing out and the vertical plating being really unusual. Raspberry Napoleon The pastry itself is packed with flaky layer upon flaky layer, and the buttercream in between those flakey layers is relatively thin. But that’s okay, because the large amount of frosting on top more than compensates. Raspberry Napoleon The garnish is simple on the Raspberry Napoleon: a powdered sugar-dusted fresh raspberry. If you don’t care for chocolate or overly heavy, sweet desserts, this is the option for you. Raspberry Napoleon The Latte Cake, on the other hand, offers chocolate and coffee connoisseurs a skillfully crafted sliver of cake that will totally satisfy. Latte Cake First, check out that mirror glaze! You can practically see your reflection in it, which is absolutely the point. Beneath the mirror glaze, layers of cream and cake create an architectural pastry masterpiece. Latte Cake The layers include vanilla and chocolate sponge cakes, pastry cream, and mousse atop a dense, dark chocolate cookie. The flavors are light and complementary, with the mirror glaze carrying the most chocolate flavor and the coffee mousse carrying the coffee. Latte Cake A single bite containing all five layers is a terrific play on flavors and textures. So good! Latte Cake The Chocolate Pecan Tart is a one of the more familiar pastries, perhaps, as we frequently see special desserts in tart shells at Walt Disney World. But the filling and garnishes set this one apart. Chocolate Pecan Tart The tart shell is even all around, thin and golden. There’s a satisfying crunch to it when you cut it. Garnishes include waves of chocolate ribbon, a swirl of chocolate buttercream, and crispy pearls. Chocolate Pecan Tart We’re already in love with the combo of chocolate and nuts, of course, and here they create great visual interest in addition to flavor contrast. (But beware: chocolate ribbon garnishes do tend to melt quickly in the heat of summer, so be prepared to dig in quickly on a hot day!) Chocolate Pecan Tart The inside of the tart is thick with chocolate that’s studded throughout with chopped pecans. Every bite contains a pecan — as it should! — and the dark chocolate is sweet without being cloying. The garnishes help add a bit more sweetness when you eat them all together. Chocolate Pecan Tart The second tart option in the Trolley Car Café case showcases slices of apple and dark, rich caramel. It’s an Apple Almond Tart, and it’s the choice for those who prefer apple desserts (like us — this was our favorite!). Apple Almond Tart First of all: caramel much? It’s dark, thick, and irresistible, coating the apple slices and providing a sweet/salty overlay to the whole tart. The almonds are finely chopped and attach with more thick caramel just around the edge of the tart. Apple Almond Tart But you get a lot more almond flavor once you get inside, where a frangipane fills the tart and imparts a sweet almond flavor. Apple Almond Tart We’re telling you: Trolley Car Café is now a destination for fine pastries. Who would’ve thought we’d be saying that, right? Since this is a Starbucks location, the lines do tend toward the slightly long (particularly in the morning and evening), but we’re telling you: it’s totally worth it! Move over Casey’s Corner corn dog nuggets — the BIG (corn)DOGS have arrived at Magic Kingdom’s Sleepy Hollow Refreshments! Foot-long Corn Dog Disney fans will remember when the hand-dipped corn dog came over to Sleepy Hollow in 2017. Sadly, after a short stint it was taken off the menu. We’re glad to say it’s back and bigger than ever! This thing is seriously HUGE — it’s almost as tall as Cinderella Castle! Foot-long Corn Dog Well, actually it’s just a foot long — that’s still pretty big, though, in the world of corn dogs! Sleepy Hollow Menu The new Sleepy Hollow Refreshments menu item is served with house made chips and will set you back $10.99. Inside Foot-long Corn Dog The batter is a nice golden color with a good crunch… . The sweetness-level is good, but we actually paired ours with Maple Syrup for extra sweetness and loved it! Foot-long Corn Dog Served with House Made Chips And the house made chips add a nice crispy touch to this jumbo-sized classic theme park meal. Foot Long Corn Dog While we still miss those hand-dipped corn dogs that made a short appearance at Sleepy Hollow last summer, we’re pretty happy with this new Magic Kingdom snack. NOTE: we purchased several of the original hand-dipped corn dogs and had varied experiences with them — some were great, but others were overdone and too crunchy and dry.
