It’s the most wonderful time of the year and the holidays have arrived in the Play Disney Parks app! That’s right, special new achievements and Apple Music®* playlists are available this holiday season for some festive fun that’s sure to delight at Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort. In the pantheon of inspired restaurants at Walt Disney World, Jiko — The Cooking Place has been at the top and at the bottom for me over the past few years. I’ve had excellent meals there, and I’ve had ho-hum meals there. So let’s see how this one turns out! Learn About: San Angel Inn Restaurante Epcot Restaurants Disney World Restaurants This Signature table service spot is located on the lower level of Animal Kingdom Lodge, across from Boma, the resort’s popular African- and Indian-inspired buffet. (Incidentally, if you’re looking for AKL’s quick service restaurant, The Mara, you’ll also access that through the lower level, too.) Jiko has been a guest favorite for years. The menu is a celebration of the many and varied food traditions of the African continent, employing high-end ingredients and traditional African components to create a unique (in Disney World anyway) dining experience for guests. And while Jiko’s menu features a selection of meat dishes (you’ll see several examples below), vegan and vegetarian diners may be offered a variety of choices on a separate menu, so be sure to ask. Jiko Sign Atmosphere When you dine at Jiko, you’ll want to pay attention to the space around you. The restaurant is full of details that reflect the cultures and environments of Africa. Lighting on the back wall of the restaurant changes throughout the evening to mimic the many shades of sunset. It lends some lovely ambiance. The Lighting Here is the Best Above, the space is home to stylized birds, which are said to bring good luck. Likewise the floors include stylized images of grain, also to symbolize good luck and good harvest. A Jiko Sunset! Rings encircling the pillars of the restaurant are designed to mimic the neck rings worn by women in some African tribes. These rings symbolize wealth and beauty. Rings represent neck rings symbolizing wealth Seating in the restaurant is at tables, booths, and in banquettes. Window tables look out on a gurgling brook and some stonework and greenery. Seating by the Window at Jiko Note that banquette seating means diners may be elbow to elbow with those seated at the next table. If you’re looking for a little more privacy and space, be sure to specify to cast members at check in that you’d prefer non-banquette seating. Seating at Jiko There are times when seating in the wine room is available to diners. This intimate room is a lovely, warm place for a quiet dinner. Wine Room at Jiko. The thoughtfulness of the symbolism in Jiko creates a warm, vibrant atmosphere in which to dine. And maybe all that symbolic good luck will translate into a tasty meal! Eats The menu at Jiko changes regularly, reflecting the seasonality of the ingredients and creativity of the chefs. The drink menu offers cocktails taking their inspiration (at least in name) from Africa and a wine list consisting of wine representing several regions of the African continent. The wine is such a draw here that the restaurant even hosts a wine tasting on select Wednesdays. Jiko Wine Tasting On my visit I passed on wine but ordered the Kilimanjaro Margarita. This tart and powerful drink had a fruity undertone thanks to tangy tangerine juice. It was refreshing and light — the perfect way to start a meal here, where the food is often very rich. Kilimanjaro Margarita We also received complimentary rolls and butter — not always a given at Walt Disney World these days. At Jiko, spices and herbs are often used to create something that’s a step above ordinary dinner rolls. And these ones were particularly impressive for their appearance alone — check out that golden glow! The accompanying butter has a subtle sweet, cinnamon-y flavor. Bread and Butter On my last reviewed visit to Jiko, I wasn’t as impressed with the menu offerings as I had been in the past, so on this visit, I was determined to try a variety of items to be sure we could keep recommending Jiko as prolifically as we have in the past. Jiko Menu We started with the Wild Boar Tenderloin appetizer which comes with pap (a traditional corn-based starch) and chakalaka (a traditional vegetable medley often fortified with beans). The flavorful dish was tender, and I appreciated the use of traditional components done well. The serving was substantial enough to be a meal for diners with small appetites (or in combination with a second app). Wild Boar Tenderloin We began the entree round with Snake River Farms Wagyu Strip, and it was terrific. Perfectly rare and well-seasoned, the Strip is a lovely piece of meat. The vegetable side dish for the Wagyu was Spiced Pole Beans. These were tasty (you know I love a green bean) and a simple addition to the meat — which is really the star here. A very impressive dish, and one I wanted to immediately order again. Snake River Farms Wagyu Strip Loin This dish (and the Oak-Grilled Filet) were noted as coming with Lemon-Salsify Puree… but when in Jiko, get the Kids’ Macaroni and Cheese! This complex version of the comforting mac and cheese staple used to be the included side for the Filet, but now the kitchen has some freshly made every day for the kids’ menu (and guests who request it — which lots of them do!). It’s also worth noting that the current (as of this post) online menu lists the mac as the side for the Strip, so double check on your visit! Mac and Cheese Subbed with the Wagyu The most popular dish at Jiko is the Oak-Grilled Filet Mignon, and while the sides have undergone a few changes over the years, I still think the Mac and Cheese is the quintessential side — so I subbed it in. The same Spiced Pole Beans complete this dish. If you’re a lover of filet, this is a must. Oak-Grilled Filet Mignon We love the Macaroni and Cheese so much at Jiko that we got the recipe! Next we tried the Mrouzia-Style Morrocan Lamp Tagine, which makes one heck of a first impression! Mrouzia-Style Moroccan Lamb Tagine The lamb is packed with rich, complex flavors, including ras el hanout (a traditional mix of many different ground spices that may include coriander, ginger, pepper, anise, and many others). It’s that blend of spices — which can vary from kitchen to kitchen — that gives this dish its something special. The Lamb Tagine is served with Parsnip Silk, Root Spinach, Medjool Date Smoor (kind of a thick chutney), and Pomegranate Glaze. While this dish wasn’t my favorite (I’m not a lamb fan), my dining companion grew up eating lamb in her Greek family and loved this version. Mrouzia-Style Moroccan Lamb Tagine The sleeper hit of the night was the Botswana Seswaa-Style Beef Short Rib. Even from a glance, this dish has a homey feeling — almost like the components of a hearty stew plated thoughtfully. The accompaniments to the tender meat included Istambu Samp and Beans, Sambal, Sukuma Wiki, and Mushrooms. This dish employs several traditional African ingredients, making it something you are unlikely to have had anywhere else. It’s delicious and interesting and absolutely worth a try. Botswana Seswaa-Style Beef Short Ribs Jiko is known for its rich entrees, but the desserts here are also unique and thoughtful. Dessert Menu In addition to desserts, Jiko offers a range of After-Dinner Drinks. After-Dinner Drinks Menu First up for us from the dessert menu was the Safari Sunset. This is described as Carrot Cake, Cornbread Calamansi and Lemon Cremeux, Kenyan Coffee Streusel, Citrus Gel, Valrhona Dulcey Mousse, and Candied Carrots. And it delivers those elements in a beautiful plated dessert that — let’s be honest — doesn’t look like any carrot cake we’ve tried before. This one was fine, but strangely the best part was the streusel for me. This falls into the “fancy signature restaurant dessert” camp for me. While these desserts look fancy and have lots of components, they’re not memorable, and they’re not the kind of thing you want to order again and again in my experience. Safari Sunset The Kilimanjaro is probably Jiko’s most well-known dessert, having been on the menu for some time. It’s comprised of Tanzanian Chocolate Mousse, Pistachio Financier (crumbled), Pink Peppercorn Meringue, Cacao Nib Crunch, and Ras el Hanout Pineapples. This is good play on textures, and there are several techniques here that really show the skill of the pastry chefs at Jiko. But the thing I remember most about it is that those pineapples tasted cinnamon-y…like a good holiday dessert. Again, it didn’t wow. Kilimanjaro Dessert The final dessert of the night was the simplest of the three we tried: Malva Pudding. This dessert of Melktart Ice Cream, Kataifi, Kanu Tuile, and Cabernet Gelée is an artful play on this traditional, humble dessert. The ice cream is delicious — inspired by a popular African custard and ridiculously creamy as a result. The bird-like tuile is a lovely ode to the spirit of Jiko and offers some great crunch. But this was a tiny dessert for the $13 price tag, and the Malva Pudding itself was unimpressive. Overall, the desserts fell flat for me at Jiko. Malva Pudding Overall Jiko — The Cooking Place can be a special dining experience. And if you’ve got an adventurous palate — or if you want to challenge some of your expectations of fine dining at Walt Disney World — Jiko is a great place to do it. But, like I said, Jiko has been hit or miss for me the past few years, so consider that when making your plans. This restaurant is a long way away from just about everything else in Disney World, so it’s not a quick jaunt from a park for most people. And while my visit last week offered a few of the best eats I’ve had at Jiko in my Disney career, it’s not always a guaranteed good time. Nosh or Not Make your way to The Cooking Place if: You want to try food inspired by cuisines that are potentially more unfamiliar to you. You’re looking to experience Signature dining, and you’re staying at Animal Kingdom Lodge. African culture and food is something in which you’re interested, and you want to experience Disney’s version of them. Enjoy a meal elsewhere if: You don’t have an adventurous palate and don’t want to waste money or calories on something you don’t think you’ll enjoy. You want to spend your vacation dollars on souvenirs and experiences rather than expensive meals. If your “Happy Space” is Space Mountain, then you’ll be seeing the recently refurbished exit on your way out of the Mountain the next time you conquer it in Magic Kingdom! Space Mountain Since the refurbishment focused on the ride’s exit, the attraction itself has remained up and running. But now guests are able to wind their way out via the new exit. Space Mountain Exit The biggest change is that the speedramp which previously carried guests for a portion of the exit was removed, so you’ll be walking your way through the winding ramps. Space Mountain Exit Space Mountain Exit And the brightened, lengthened pathway of the exit has a minimalistic design popped with “futuristic” light fixtures. Where better to celebrate the Holidays at the Disneyland Resort than on the happiest cruise that ever sailed? The façade at “it’s a small world” gets a festive makeover this time of year, featuring thousands of brilliant lights and a Santa hat atop the clock face. Filled to the brim with colorful characters and festive décor, “it’s a small world” Holiday offers seasons greetings from more than 300 children around the world. Sailing along these wondrous waterways, it’s easy to miss some of the smaller details. So, let’s hop in, sing along and look closer at some of the special elements of this beloved attraction. Seasonal touches appear all around you as soon as your ship sets sail. The voyage begins in the northern regions, where snowflakes sparkle and letters addressed to Santa are scattered about. The distinct silhouette of Mr. Claus himself is visible in the upstairs window of a quaint snow-covered cottage. Then, float over to Europe, where two ceremonial guards dressed in scarlet and gold await your arrival. On a perch adorned with holly and tinsel stands one of these two Yeoman Warders, protectors of the Tower of London commonly known as Beefeaters. In fact, Beefeaters themselves are often represented in Christmas ornaments and décor. Soon, journey to Asia, where everything is completely decked out for Lunar New Year. Check out the vivid neon dragon positioned amongst fireworks, hand fans and celebratory drummers. Dragons are especially important this time of year, as the dragon dance has long been an essential part of Chinese festivals. Passing through South America and Mexico, glance upwards to spot three familiar faces, the Three Caballeros! Donald Duck, José Carioca and Panchito play various musical instruments as piñatas twirl overhead. While these three best friends can be found at “it’s a small world” any time of year, be sure to catch them over at the limited-time Disney ¡Viva Navidad! Street Party. There, they host the party from atop a colorful float adorned with streamers to celebrate the holidays, culture and friendship. Faster than you can say “Mele Kalikimaka,” the Hawaiian phrase for “Merry Christmas,” your boat takes a turn towards the Pacific Islands. Mermaids joyfully sing “Jingle Shells,” their rendition of the famous holiday classic. Spot Ariel and two of her sisters, Adrina and Attina, swaying along to the music. Careful observers will notice the plate of fish beneath them, marked “for Santa.” Devoted Disney fans will remember how much Lilo & Stitch adore Elvis. For an extra special holiday touch, look out for an Elvis bobble head in front of the dynamic duo as the group catches a wave together. The next section of the attraction truly captures the spirit of America. You are nearing home now, but keep your eyes peeled for a few furry friends! Every so often, gophers dressed in Santa hats pop out from a snowy knoll to say hello to visitors passing by. Across the way, look closely at the three Native Americans to discover an unexpected treat in their hands: popcorn! In fact, the practice of popping corn was common among Native Americans even hundreds of years ago. This time of year especially, “it’s a small world” Holiday reminds us to appreciate our differences and unite in the bonds of song, friendship and happiness. The cooler temperatures have officially arrived — at least for a few days — in Central Florida! Guests in Walt Disney World woke up to temps in the high 30s and low 40s this morning. So, as you can imagine, hot drinks are in demand to face a cold day playing in the parks! Magic Kingdom during the Holidays Also in demand? This new holiday-themed souvenir hot drink mug spotted in Magic Kingdom! Holiday Hot Drink Souvenir Mug The festive design depicts Mickey, Minnie, and Pluto doing their best to stay warm in a wintery scene in gorgeous green and blue hues. If you can find them at the carts, they are served with your choice of coffee or hot cocoa for $7.50. BUT! We ended up tracking them down at Sunshine Tree Terrace in Adventureland, where they were sold on their own for $5.00 (without a drink, which could be added at an additional cost). It looks like Andy from Toy Story is going to have another place to play… because a Toy Story Hotel has just been announced for Tokyo Disney Resort! To Infinity… and BEYOND! Oriental Land Co., Ltd. has just announced a new “family-friendly, affordable Disney hotel” based on the Toy Story films will open in the fiscal year 2021 (which runs from April 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022). According to the press release, the as-yet-unnamed hotel will offer 600 rooms where “everything looks like it is made of toys” throughout the resort. The guest rooms are inspired by Andy’s very own bedroom where — of course — toys like Woody and Buzz Lightyear live. The hotel will feature standard room amenities as well as a restaurant. Also in development by Oriental Land are new themed areas coming to Tokyo Disneyland (including a Fantasyland expansion) in 2020 and Tokyo DisneySea Parks (including a themed port with areas themed to Frozen, Peter Pan, and Tangled) in 2022, so the new hotel is intended to meet the needs of more guests anticipated for Tokyo Disney Resort. I love using the #PlayDisneyParks app while I’m having fun at the parks with my familia and at home since I can listen to the Disney playlists that are available through Apple Music®*. And today, I’m happy to announce that a new playlist has been added and it has music en español! The new “Disney en Español” playlist is available in the app at Epcot, specifically at the Mexico Pavilion. You and your amigos will be able to listen to songs from Disney•Pixar’s “Coco” and other Disney movies and shows, all in en español! So how does this work? Es muy fácil! When you are using the app, you will see that each park has a map and within it, a music icon. You can click on that and like Disney magic, an Apple Music playlist will come up from each of the parks with dedicated lists throughout various areas within the park. For example, when you are in Epcot, make sure that you click on the icon that is on the Mexico Pavilion so you can listen to the playlist. You will be able to preview the music on the playlist with a thirty-second sample of each song, and new users can even sign up for a free three-month trial from within the app and enjoy full-length versions of their favorite Disney songs. See? Es super fácil! You could also listen to this playlist at home when you are getting ready for your vacación to Walt Disney World Resort or even after you return from your trip! My favorite song from the playlist is “Un Poco Loco” because I’m crazy about this playlist! Last month, 6-year-old Layla Lester was walking through Akron Falls Park in Akron, N.Y., when she spotted a bedazzled bride she took for Cinderella, who was in the park taking wedding photos. When Layla went over to say hello to her favorite princess, the bride played along and became impromptu royalty for Layla for a few minutes. The bride’s photographer captured the entire encounter, and the story quickly went viral. Funds raised via a GoFundMe account enabled Layla and her family to travel to the Walt Disney World Resort to meet the real Cinderella. Earlier today, Layla visited the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique at Magic Kingdom Park to receive her own princess makeover, and took photos with her family in front of Cinderella Castle. As of today, guests are able to reserve rooms for check-in dates starting July 9, 2019 for the Gran Destino Tower coming to Disney World’s Coronado Springs Resort. Recently, we shared new details about the exciting expansion at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort. Beginning today, guests can book their reservations in the new Gran Destino Tower for stays starting July 2019. When completed, the Gran Destino Tower will be part of the reimagining of Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort. This transformation is inspired by the adventurous spirit of great Spanish explorers and historic innovative Spanish artists, writers and architects. Guests can look forward to new dining experiences as part of the reimagining. Three Bridges Bar & Grill will be located on an island in the middle of the resort’s 14-acre lake, Lago Dorado. Courtyards adjacent to the restaurant offer private-event options, and the entire area is accessible via convenient walkways stretching across the lake. Additionally, a unique rooftop table service restaurant, Toledo – Tapas, Steak & Seafood, will open as part of Gran Destino Tower. The new dining establishment – featuring beautiful views of Walt Disney World Resort – will offer indoor dining and a lounge with indoor and outdoor seating. Over the past few weeks, we have seen so many imaginative and fun photos posted as part of this year’s #ShareYourEars campaign. Last week it was announced that reservations for the new Gran Destino Tower coming to Disney World’s Coronado Springs Resort would be opening up for guests today. Gran Destino Tower ©Disney Though it was announced that those dates would be available starting in July 2019, an official opening date had not been revealed. But now that bookings have opened, we have one! July 9, 2019 is the date when guests may start checking into the Gran Destino Tower, with reservations opening today. The Tower will feature 545 guest rooms (including 50 suites), a rooftop restaurant, and serve as the main entrance to the resort. Today, we’re happy to share a new batch of “Disney Parks in Silhouette” pieces from Toy Story Land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Keith started out his journey through Andy’s backyard by looking for the perfect place to photograph his favorite “Toy Story” friends. “The Aliens are my favorite Pixar characters, so they absolutely had to be ‘chosen’ to make an appearance!” Keith said. “Here’s one of the Aliens being chosen by the claw now at the Alien Swirling Saucers attraction.” They weren’t the only little green men to grab Keith’s attention – he also created some backup for the Green Army Men who roam the land. “The Green Army Men around Toy Story Land looked like they needed some reinforcements, so I called them up for the Sergeant! Here they are dropping in via parachute – ready to help with the fun!” he said. Andy’s backyard is a celebration of all kinds of “Toy Story” friendships, so it’s only natural that Keith would want to reunite “Pixar’s icon in the very middle of Toy Story Land is adorable, but I wanted to reunite it with its other icon – Luxo Jr,” Keith said. “Trying to balance Luxo Jr. on top of the ball was a lot of fun, especially with trying to get one of the street lamps be the light to it!” Last but not least, Keith headed back for more fun at Alien Swirling Saucers, where he positioned one lucky guy to blast off “to infinity and beyond!” View the full article
