  11. It’s that Not-So-Scary time of year, and if you’re like some of us — the scariest part of Halloween is planning a costume. Well, fear not! Disney Environmentality is here to help. No matter where cast members work, they are encouraged to express their creativity and innovation. With this in mind, we asked cast members at Walt Disney World Resort to share their tips on how to make easy and environmentally-conscious costumes, and their creations were so good, we had to share what they came up with! Whether it’s reusing old costumes in a new and creative way or finding things around the house to accessorize your spooky style, our cast members truly embody “Environmentality” — to think and act with the environment in mind. And so can you. Check out these awesome tips on how to make last-minute do-it-yourself Halloween costumes. Look around the house to see what you have available — raid your closet for clothes, shoes and bags you can incorporate into your costume. “We already owned a WALL-E hoodie and EVE Mickey Ears, and used one of Andrew’s snow boots and a succulent I had in my living room. I think they would have been proud of our eco-friendly hacks and ingenuity!” — Amanda, Travel Sales Support intern Repurpose items to give them a second life. “The costume was made from a corset, tights and wig I already owned. I liquid stitched and painted some old fabric to create the tentacles and wrap — stuffing them with plastic bags as a way of reusing them for my villainous Ursula costume.” — Madison, Wilderness Explorer Think of creative ways to use recycled items — paper, newspaper, magazines, cardboard. “I painted white paper from the recycle bin then crumpled them up to create the popcorn that are glued onto an old shirt I no longer wear. Luckily, I had a red striped skirt to match but you can always use red pants or skirt from a second-hand store. You can paint the skirt with white paint or use white tape to make the stripes. And pop!” — Thiffany, Operations Manager Be creative! Put a new twist on old costumes. “Hey now! Hey now! We repurposed the tulle and accessories from old Rapunzel- and Tinkerbell-inspired costumes to create our ‘The Lizzie McGuire Movie’ costumes.” – Maria, Environmental Coordinator Remember, paint and craft items can go a long way – this was such a good tip, we had to show off two great examples! “I had the outfit and added ribbon from my sewing nook for a belt and bowtie. The flowers for the hat were repurposed from some floral wreath-making supplies, and I used clay to create the parrot head on top of an old umbrella. Lastly, the “practically-perfect” carpet bag was a fabulous find at a resale shop!” – Lindsay, Magic Kingdom Communications Manager “Most of what we wore we already owned, and I used a broom, put a pool noodle over it with duct tape to create the large paintbrush for my artsy costume. I borrowed a headband and glued old paintbrushes to it to complete the look.” — Joey, Communications Specialist Don’t forget about Disney bounding – color coordinate your clothing based on your favorite characters. “My family was inspired by Donald, Daisy and Pluto for our Halloween costumes. Most of what we wore we already owned, and my skirt was made out of an old blanket that I cut and fabric glued into a skirt.” — Becky, Food & Beverage Hostess ALSO: Don’t Go Batty Trying to Find Photo Opportunities During Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party: Your Guide is Here Check out a second-hand shop or thrift store to find costume elements. “Environmentality and being green are incredibly important to me and my friends. That’s why most of the elements from our costumes came from a second-hand store or a good ole’ fashion clothing swap.” — Libby, Disney Internships & Programs Specialist Think outside the box on how to create unique accessories and decorations from everyday items. “The force was with us making my niece’s last-minute ‘Rey’ costume. She had the clothes and boots. We just added an old household drape we no longer use for her wrap and the lightsaber from the family toy box!” — Siva, Technology Manager Complete your transformation with make-up and face paint. “I used old blue eyeshadow from the bottom of my makeup drawer to create my Sadness look. This was a good alternative to buying new face paint and was easier to wash off at the end of my emotional evening.” — Sloane, Public Affairs Intern And remember, think about favorite costumes your friends and family have worn that made you envious and arrange a costume swap. You can also borrow clothes and items from others to help create the perfect “green” costume and everyone wins, including the environment! View the full article

  14. A blizzard full of Frozen 2-themed treats have been making their way around Disney World! Artist’s Palette Recently, we’ve tried the Frozen 2 Fall Cheesecake, Frozen 2 Mini Spirit Cupcakes, Frozen 2 Caramel Mousse, and Frozen Orange Cream Soda, and now we’re snagging another dessert at this Disney Resort! The Artist’s Palette has swirled up the Hidden Truth Frozen 2 Cupcake at Saratoga Springs! Hidden Truth Frozen 2 Cupcake The vanilla cupcake is filled with chocolate and blueberry ganache and topped with buttercream, a sprinkle rim, edible glitter, and a white chocolate piece featuring Elsa and a Nokk. Hidden Truth Frozen 2 Cupcake Although it definitely stained our fingers, this cupcake was WORTH IT. The moist cake was beautifully complemented by the chocolate and blueberry ganache. The fruit wasn’t too heavy, but balanced wonderfully with the chocolate to add a richness to the light cake. Chocolate and Blueberry Ganache The “hidden truth” in this cupcake was that the buttercream even had a hint of mint in the flavor. Although it wasn’t overwhelming, the mint definitely curbed the sweetness in the buttercream (which was delicious)! We especially loved that this cupcake came from the cooler because it made the frosting a little stiffer and a LOT easier to eat! Buttercream with a Hint of Mint! You can get your own Hidden Truth Frozen 2 Cupcake for $5.99 or a Disney Dining Plan snack credit (and be sure to grab some napkins when you do!). 17. Frozen 2 is descending on Disney World faster than a Summer snowstorm in Arendelle! Kringla Bakeri og Kafe And where else to find all the best Frozen-inspired treats than in the Norway Pavilion in Epcot?! We already sampled the way too pretty Caramel Mousse, a Frozen Slush, the new Fall Cheesecake, and now we’re back with a new take on an old Frozen favorite! Kringla Bakeri og Kafe keeps giving us more and more fun Frozen treats! While grabbing goodies, we spied an oddly familiar-looking set of cupcakes in the case… Frozen 2 Mini Cupcakes This set of 4 Mini Spirit Cupcakes costs $7.49 and each one is themed to a different elemental spirit — water, fire, earth, and wind. But wait, we’re feeling déjà vu over here! Frozen Mini Cupcakes Back in 2016 when Frozen Ever After opened, Kringla Bakeri og Kafe became Frozen treat central. One popular treat was the Frozen Mini Cupcakes seen below. Mini Frozen Cupcakes We loved these cuties when we first reviewed them! Naturally, these lil cakes got a fresh makeover with the coming of Frozen 2! Let’s see if we loved them the same. Just like the originals, you get 2 chocolate and 2 vanilla mini cupcakes. First up was an icy blue vanilla “Water” cupcake accented with tiny white sprinkles. This was a perfectly fine mini vanilla cupcake, if not a bit on the plain side. Vanilla Cupcake Next, we tried a mini chocolate “Fire” cupcake with pink and purple buttercream piped in a cute fire pattern. The colors are super cute here and the cake was very moist and chocolatey! Chocolate Cupcake Next up, we have a vanilla mini cupcake with a swirl of white buttercream and a few Fall sprinkles on top. This cupcake represents “Wind” with the blowing leaves. The sprinkles gave a nice crunch to the bite. Vanilla Cupcake Last up we have a chocolate…well, a chocolate rock cupcake? Muffin? This cupcake represents “Earth” but it was a bit disappointing because NO frosting! The plain chocolate cake has a few candy rocks on top, but where is the frosting!?! If a cupcake has no buttercream is it even really a cupcake? Chocolate Cupcake So how does it stack up to the original set? Well, we prefer the original to the sequel, if you catch our drift! These were perfectly fine cupcakes (minus the frostingless one!) but the original had more variety and style to them. In the original set, one featured cookies and cream buttercream and another had a fruity strawberry buttercream. These are all relatively plain by comparison, unfortunately. If you’re looking for an easily shareable sweet, these would be a great pick for kids in your group, especially with the fun colors. But, if we’re in Kringla looking for a sweet Frozen treat, we’ll likely grab the Chocolate Mousse instead! Check out our review of the original Frozen Mini Cupcakes HERE! 21. When you visit Disney’s Animal Kingdom this holiday season, you’ll find festive new entertainment and holiday décor in every land. It all begins on Discovery Island, where you’ll be surrounded by a celebration of winter. The village is filled with sparkling white holiday decorations and colorful, animal-inspired luminaries, and throughout the day, the area springs to life with a Merry Menagerie of winter animals, accompanied by serenading musicians as they create a playful atmosphere of festive fun. The team at Disney Parks Live Entertainment realized this collection of reindeer, foxes, polar bears, penguins and more in the form of life-size, artisan-sculpted puppets, each designed and hand-crafted using natural materials and fabrics. The animals were then brought to life through a variety of theatrical techniques that will allow them and their performers to interact directly with guests like never before. You’ll be able to meet this Merry Menagerie for yourself, when the spirit of the holidays comes alive with magic, starting November 8 at Disney’s Animal Kingdom! View the full article

  23. You’ve probably heard of Elf-on-the-Shelf, Santa’s super mischievous helper who keeps an eye on kiddos all Christmas season long! If you haven’t heard of him, Elf-on-the-Shelf is a book and accompanying pose-able doll. Basically, parents hide the elf around the house each night of December and kids delight in finding their friend each morning. MK Christmas Well, last year, we found out there was a way to engage in this fun tradition Disney-style! As we went into the holiday season, we started spotting the mischievous Stitch-on-the-Shelf around Disney World. If you missed out on grabbing him last year, don’t worry! Because this naughty alien is back for 2019. This toy comes in a package including the book Holiday Mischief with Stitch and an accompanying pose-able Stitch doll (much like with the original Elf-on-the-Shelf). Parents can read the stories to their kiddos and then let the fun ensue in the weeks leading up to Christmas. Stitch-on-the-Shelf In true Experiment 626 fashion, Stitch is wearing a hat that can be posed to be naughty or nice so he can get up to all sorts of antics in your home. We think he has the potential to be a fun and different holiday tradition for Disney-lovers. Stitch-on-the-Shelf Your kids will likely delight in spotting that mischievous wink around your home. But, beware! Many a-parent has tired of Elf-on-the-Shelf antics, so be ready to commit to delighting the little ones with their favorite blue alien when you buy. Stitch-on-the-Shelf We spotted Stitch-on-the-Shelf at Mouse Gear in Epcot and we wouldn’t be surprised to see him pop up in other stores around the parks. You can take him home for yourself with his accompanying story for $34.99! Share his with your Ohana and let us know what they thought! Will you be snagging a Stitch-on-the-Shelf for your home?
