There’s been a lot going on when it comes to food and beverages at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in Disney World With the constant menu name flip-flopping and new menu items being introduced, it can be difficult to keep up with all that’s happening in Batuu! But enough of that, we’re about to sit back, relax, and enjoy a brand new cocktail. Introducing, the Surly Sarlacc, available at both Ronto Roasters and Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo. Surly Sarlacc The Surly Sarlacc features Ketel One Botanical Grapefruit and Rose Vodka, Minute Maid Limeade, Raspberry, and Spicy Mango Flavors, and is priced at a little more affordable $13.00 ( compared to many of the cocktails in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge that run upwards of $18.00. Eek!). Surly Sarlacc Ingredients For those not familiar with the Ketel One Botanical line, it is an organic vodka with very mild flavoring, pairing nicely with anything fruity, floral, or herbal. And when trying this NEW drink, the prominent flavors we were getting were the lime and grapefruit, not really much of the spice. Surly Sarlacc Offering what we thought to be the perfect Batuu beverage, we found this pre-mixed cocktail to be extremely refreshing, with just the right hint of tart and a satisfying amount of booze. As a major relief, it was not overwhelmingly sweet (like practically every other drink we’ve had here outside of Oga’s Cantina). Hello Surly Sarlacc! Two enthusiastic thumbs up from us! We highly recommend picking this up from either Ronto Roasters or Docking Bay 7 on your next trip to Batuu! Will you be trying out this new cocktail on your next trip to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge? November brings in the cool air and even cooler artists at the WonderGround Gallery in the Downtown Disney District at the Disneyland Resort. Take a stroll through the WonderGround Gallery and support these talented artists’ work. While you’re there, you may find that perfect piece of Disney craftsmanship that you will want to show off to your friends and family! WonderGround Artists in Residence: The Bové Sisters, Lorelay and Neysa Bové The Disneyland Resort is pleased to have The Bové Sisters as the artists in residence. Both sisters are artists born and raised in Andorra, Spain. Their family moved to Los Angeles, where they are now fulfilling her childhood dreams of becoming successful artists within The Walt Disney Company. Lorelay Bové graduated from California Institute of the Arts in 2007, completing an internship at Pixar Animation Studios in Emeryville and then started her career in the visual development department. Lorelay has worked on the Disney animated movie “The Princess and the Frog” providing visual development, color characters, costumes, props, backgrounds and end credit sequence art and designs. Lorelay has also worked on visual development on a variety of other Disney animated movies such as “Tangled,” “Tangled Ever After,” “Ballad of Nessie,” “Winnie the Pooh,” and “Prep and Landing,” just to name a few. Appearance Dates for Lorelay Bové: Nov. 1, 3, 9, and 10 from 5 – 9 p.m. performing live art demonstrations and more. Neysa Bové studied Fashion Design at FIDM (The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising) and later took courses at Cal Arts’ acclaimed animation department. After a Costume Design internship at Walt Disney World, Neysa began her career working at Disney Consumer Products. Her very first film contribution doing visual development and costume design was on the Disney movie “Moana.” Since then, she’s worked on Disney and Pixar movies including “Wreck it Ralph 2,” “Frozen 2,” and “Raya and the Last Dragon.” As a lover of whimsical and beautiful things, she wants her artwork to reflect that by choosing light and fun themes, by using fun and colorful palettes and transporting the viewer to a happy and fun world. Appearance Dates for Neysa Bové: Nov. 16, 17, and 24 from 5 – 9 p.m. performing live art demonstrations and more. Featured Artisan of the Month: Jackie Huang Jackie Huang moved to Los Angeles after high school to attend the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts. Shortly after graduating, she returned to school to study illustration at Art Center College of Design. There she found a new way of storytelling through her love of paper art and pop-ups. Whether it’s through a pop-up unfolding before your eyes, or tilting your head to see another angle of a paper sculpture, Jackie believes in crafting a moment that makes you pause. She invites you to see how the ordinary can become extraordinary. Appearance Dates for Jackie Huang: Nov. 2, 3, 23 and 24 from 1 – 4 p.m. performing live paper art demonstrations and more. “Frozen 2” Showcase at WonderGround Gallery On Nov. 23 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., enjoy a showcase for the new Disney movie “Frozen 2” at WonderGround Gallery! These artists have worked on the film at Feature Animation and are excited to share their artistic styles in celebration of the new film. WonderGround Artist Showcase Miss Mindy is a Los Angeles native currently living and working out of her elf-like design studio tucked away in the hills. Her ‘cartoon folk art’ ranges from fluid ink drawings and paintings, to her fabulously handcrafted sculptures. She is also a toy making aficionado. Her inspiration is her grandmother, who worked as an ink and paint girl for The Walt Disney Studio in the 1930’s. In addition to her fine art career, she has been prolific in creating animation designs, stories and illustrations for a slow of notable companies since the early 2000’s. Appearance Dates for Miss Mindy: Nov. 16 from 2 – 4 p.m. Brittney Lee is a visual-development artist at The Walt Disney Animation Studios. A graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology, she knew that she would pursue a career in animation from the moment she saw the Disney animated classic “The Little Mermaid” at age six. Her handiwork can be found in the movie “Frozen” and “Wreck-it Ralph” as well as the Disney short films “Paperman” and “Get A Horse!” Griselda Sastrawinata has always been influenced by art and animation. She fell in love with Disney as a little girl watching the classic Disney movies “Cinderella” and “Sleeping Beauty” and it has always been her dream to be part of the Disney family. Griselda began her animation career while she was finishing art school and after graduation, she worked as a visual development artist and character designer. Through her career, Griselda has worked on numerous movies and, in 2015, realized her dream of becoming a Disney artist for the Walt Disney Studio as a character designer and visual development artist. Bill Schwab is an art director of characters at The Walt Disney Animation Studios. This is the first time Bill will be attending the WonderGround Gallery Showcase to show off his “Frozen 2” inspired artwork. Appearance Dates for Brittney Lee, Bill Schwab, Neysa Bové, Lorelay Bové, Griselda Sastrawinata: Nov. 23 from 5 – 7 p.m. View the full article

We simply can’t let it go because it seems like Frozen-fever is here to stay at the Disney Parks. With the upcoming release of Frozen 2, a swirling storm of Frozen-themed treats have made their way across the parks, including the delicious Hidden Truth Cupcake at Artist’s Palette and the very Fall-ready Pumpkin Spice Donut Tart at Contempo Cafe. Beach Club Marketplace Today we’re heading over to the Beach Club Marketplace and The Market at Ale & Compass at Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club Resort to check out a new treat! The Dark Sea Chocolate Cake also known as Disney’s Frozen Chocolate Caramel Cake (almost) looks too pretty to eat! And this stunning marbled dessert holds a lot of surprises. Dark Sea Chocolate Cake It features a chocolate cake with caramel cream cheese swirl, a dulcey chocolate mousse dome, glaçage, and a white chocolate glaze, topped with a show-stopping silhouette of a horse. Dark Sea Chocolate Cake On first impression, we found the dulce chocolate mousse dome to be so good!! It managed to be rich, but not overly sweet. The chocolate cake was baked well, but we wished there had been a bit more of it to balance out all the flavors! Dark Sea Chocolate Cake The caramel cream cheese, on the other hand, is super yummy, sweet, and flavorful. The caramel really comes through, far more so than the cream cheese. The white chocolate coating wasn’t our favorite part, buuut we guess you kinda need it to hold the yummy mousse in. Dark Sea Chocolate Cake You can try it out for yourself for $5.49 or a Disney Dining Plan snack credit. The Little Mermaid is celebrating 30 years on November 13 (somehow Ariel doesn’t look a day over 16!), and Walt Disney World is celebrating with a truly unique spin on a movie anniversary tie-in. The Little Mermaid Menu at Coral Reef Limited time Little Mermaid-inspired menu items have dropped anchor at Coral Reef Restaurant in Epcot’s Seas with Nemo and Friends Pavilion! The Little Mermaid-named menu items started October 19, and while Disney has said it will be a limited-time run for these offerings, no end date has been announced at this time. The ‘new’ menu items are actually just thematically-named regular full menu items (you can see them on the online menu sans their Mermaid names). The Little Mermaid Menu Of course, every meal at Coral Reef comes with that under the sea feel and plenty of fish in the 5.7 million gallon aquarium adjacent to the dining room! Coral Reef Dining Room Coral Reef Aquarium Views During our visit, we even spotted a human fish in the distance. (Our server mentioned that mid-afternoon is a great time to dine at Coral Reef because it’s feeding time — for the fish!) Watching the fish while you dine is a fun part of eating at Coral Reef but let’s be honest here — it can also seem kinda awkward eating fish while live fish swim by!! Coral Reef Aquarium Views Sooooo which of our aquatic friends shall we eat today? The Little Mermaid-inspired menu items cover crustaceans, for the most part (sorry Sebastian!). But thankfully the menu still includes some land-based dishes like Oven-Roasted Herb Chicken Breast and some plant-based options like the Grilled Garden Vegetable Skewer. So if you’re hoping to avoid getting side-eye from the fish swimming by, you can do that! Little Mermaid Menu The non-alcoholic specialty drinks are included on the main menu, too, for those diners applying Disney Dining Plan credits that include a specialty or alcoholic drink (or those just looking for refreshment!). You’ll also find a short list of desserts (including one Mermaid-inspired addition!) Little Mermaid Menu The meal starts with some soft dinner rolls and simple butter. Nothing fancy with the butter here — just a straight-up pat and we’re not complaining. Bread and Butter The rolls are straightforward, but if you love a dinner roll like we do, these are a safe and familiar option. Bread Rolls First up from The Little Mermaid menu is Dinglehopper Shrimp Cocktail (see the Colossal Shrimp Cocktail on the regular menu). It’s not served on a dinglehopper (known more commonly as a fork up here on land), but a skewer gives you the sense of one. (They’ve got a legit dinglehopper at the Bon Voyage character breakfast at Trattoria al Forno where some dishes are Little Mermaid themed, so why not at Coral Reef?) Dinglehopper Shrimp Cocktail The Dinglehopper Shrimp Cocktail is a trio of jumbo shrimp prepared simply. In this case, simply means boringly. There’s no discernible added flavor here, and maybe that’s fine if you’re looking for plain shrimp cocktail. But we were hoping for a little something special given the momentousness of the occasion. Dinglehopper Shrimp Cocktail As far as how they were cooked, the shrimp are perfect. Dinglehopper Shrimp Cocktail And the cocktail sauce and grilled lemon are traditional accompaniments that, of course, work fine. But we wanted a little pizzazz to celebrate one of the most beloved mermaids in the sea, and there’s, unfortunately, nothing special here. Dinglehopper Shrimp Cocktail Now for the next dish — Chef Louis’ Lobster Seafood Boil — diners receive a set of tools, including crab pliers and a shell cracker. Utensils for cracking into the seafood boil! Chef Louis’ Lobster Seafood Boil (aka the Lobster Seafood Boil) is served in a large metal pan to mimic the actual boiling, we presume. It’s a decent portion of food, but note that substitutions are not available for this, so what you see is what you get! Chef Louis’ Lobster Seafood Boil Components of the flavorful boil include lobster, a Jonah crab claw, shrimp, andouille sausage, red potatoes, and a spiced cioppino broth. Ouzo-garlic butter adds a bit of aroma and complexity to the dish. Chef Louis’ Lobster Seafood Boil Overall, we were pleased with this dish. Unlike the Dinglehopper Shrimp Cocktail which was relatively boring, the Seafood Boil was packed with some flavor — including peppery heat from the broth. Chef Louis’ Lobster Seafood Boil The lobster tail was the star. It was loaded with garlic butter and herbs (parsley, we noted), and it was powerful (in a good way!). Chef Louis’ Lobster Seafood Boil Though there’s only one tail in the Boil, it’s large, sweet, and satisfying. Chef Louis’ Lobster Seafood Boil The Jonah crab claw was good, too, though not as heavily seasoned. The cracker is definitely necessary for this pinchy fellow! Chef Louis’ Lobster Seafood Boil The other components were fillers but also good. The andouille sausage added a great savory flavor to the dish, and who doesn’t like corn and shrimp soaked in spicy broth? Chef Louis’ Lobster Seafood Boil For dessert, Coral Reef has themed one of its desserts after the sea king himself: King Triton’s Key Lime Tart. King Triton’s Key Lime Tart This plated dessert consists of a crisp graham cracker tart shell, tart Key lime filling, toasted meringue, and a white chocolate square. King Triton’s Key Lime Tart Tropical fruit coulis adds color, sweet flavor, and some visual interest to the otherwise not particularly sweet treat. King Triton’s Key Lime Tart We enjoyed the filling, which is thick and rich but not heavy. The previous incarnation of this dessert (seen in our review here) didn’t have a shell and was topped with a thick white chocolate disc. This current form is a step up for sure. More traditional and just overall more pleasant to eat. King Triton’s Key Lime Tart We have to say, while the menu isn’t revolutionary or even a change, really, from the norm, the names were still a fun way to spice up the offerings. And we made a friend while we dined as well! This fishy friend seems genuinely thrilled to join us for the meal, and we found this shark ray a delightful dining companion. Happy Little Shark! Note that as part of the promotion for The Little Mermaid menu, you will be able to take your themed menu home with you. Ours was slipped into a standard plastic merchandise bag, so there’s no fanfare here, just a pretty menu in a pretty bag. Take Your Little Mermaid Menu Home With You! Overall, this was a fine meal. Nothing particularly blew us out of the water (pun intended with more to come), but it didn’t rock our boat, either. If Ariel is your favorite star fish, the commemorative menu might be enough of a hook to reel you in. Otherwise, it’s just a typical day at sea in Coral Reef. Will you voyage like The Little Mermaid to enjoy this themed meal at Coral Reef? Sign your fins away in the comments to let us know! This Disney World Holiday Souvenir Has a Secret!
Disney4me posted a topic in Disney Food/Restaurants
We’ve had a great time spotting all the fun new merchandise around Disney World as we head into the holidays. Holiday Merch As we were scoping out some new holiday merch in the parks, we noticed something a little bit strange about one of the new souvenirs. That’s right! This holiday souvenir has a secret surprise built-in! The Snowman Tumbler, which we’ve seen in locations like Mouse Gear and World of Disney has a secret that we’re giddy to tell! Not only is this souvenir cup super cute thanks to its little Mickey hat and smiling snowman face. Buuut, he also changes colors with an internal light that takes him from red to green! Souvenir Snowman Tumbler That’s not all this frosty cup can do! Turn your souvenir pal around and you’ll see not one, but TWO buttons. Souvenir Snowman Tumbler The button on the left controls the light. Pressing it changes the effect to red, green, blinking, or switching between the two colors. Snowman Tumbler Now, are you ready to know the Snowman Tumbler’s secret?! Well, if you press on the other button you’ll find that the cup actually has a projection feature!! Say what?! That’s right! Click that right button on and you’ll see a cute holiday projection that says “Season’s Greetings” on a little Mickey ornament. Souvenir Snowman Tumbler The projection can be controlled to be solid or fading in and out. Souvenir Snowman Tumbler It comes from a tiny projector in the snowman’s coal smile! Souvenir Snowman Tumbler We’re not sure how useful this projector feature is but it sure is cute! If you’re looking to wow your friends with a cool novelty trick, this Snowman Tumbler might be a good option! You can find him around the parks for $24.99. Today, we’re celebrating Halloween with a special episode of our ongoing series of Disney-inspired bento box tutorials. Disney Parks Blog reader and fan Mike Kravanis is joining us from The Diamond Horseshoe at Magic Kingdom Park to create bento magic – a Mickey Mouse jack-o’-lantern just like you’d see on Main Street U.S.A. To create a Mickey Mouse jack-o’-lantern bento, Mike mixes pumpkin, pumpkin spice and honey with rice to create three rice balls. Roasted seaweed sheets are then cut to create Mickey’s facial features with soy sauce to add shading. Watch the video to see how Mike adds autumn leaves to finish the bento – and then give it a try! And if you’re a fan of our popular Bento Magic series here on the Blog, Mike will be hosting an interactive culinary workshop at the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival. On Thursday, November 21, at the Festival’s Mix It, Make It, Celebrate It, Mike will highlight the elements of a character bento and help you create your own! Here are more details.
