There are few things in life more thrilling, exhilarating, and euphoria-inducing than a trip to Disney World. But you know what’s not-so-fun? Dying. Yeah, that would really put a damper on that whole Disney vacation situation that you and your family have been fantasizing about all year! Skyliner sailing to Epcot And right about now you’re probably wondering why in the WORLD we’re writing about this! ;-D Well…we’ve had a LOT of emails, direct messages, and comments recently from readers, followers, and viewers asking if we think the Disney World Skyliner is really “safe.” Yep, even before the recent Skyliner accident, we had some very concerned folks who wanted to know our take on the whole “will I survive my ride in the sky?” question. So here at DFB Headquarters we thought it would be a good idea to take a look at the question just how “safe” is Disney World? — from transportation options to rides and attractions to external threats. What exactly happens on- and off-stage to keep you and your family safe while you’re there? So are you going to die at Disney World? Probably not. Here’s why. Concern #1: Transportation The Skyliner Most immediate in our minds, of course, is the recent Disney Skyliner collision that left guests stranded in the air for over 3 hours. What a major bummer for everyone involved (especially ’cause it happened less than a week after the Skyliner had debuted!), but although guests were very inconvenienced by the event, they were also quite safe the whole time they were stuck. The collision that occurred wasn’t a major accident in that people were harmed, but rather the gondolas experienced a malfunction causing them to back up in the station and stop the lines. Disney World Skyliner Rescue Vehicles And any time a Disney attraction has a “hiccup” (or in this case, a REALLY big hiccup!), Disney immediately stops the ride and performs a multi-step safety check to protect guests from any further malfunctioning. Chances are, you’ve probably experienced a few safety checks before on a Disney ride without ever realizing it when your vehicle paused momentarily and then resumed motion once again when the issue was all-cleared! Read more about the Skyliner reopening HERE! The Monorail There have also been several concerns raised over the years with Disney World’s Monorail System. And in fact, its track record has been less than stellar at times. We’re talkin’ train pieces falling off and doors opening while the train’s in motion. Yeah, although it’s an iconic part of the Disney World, it can also be one sketchy ride every once in a while! Disney World Monorail In 2009, following a fatal crash involving the Purple Monorail, Disney World stopped allowing guests to ride in the front driver car as an extra safety measure. (Guests are still able to ride in the front driver car in Disneyland.) Disney inspects the cars and tracks daily to ensure these sorts of incidents don’t repeat. If you heed the warnings to keep clear of the doors (por favor manténganse alejado de las puertas) and not to lean against them, you probably won’t fall out ;-D. But in all seriousness, although your safety is paramount to Disney while you’re on their property, it should still be a major concern of yours as well. Make sure you read all of the posted signs and listen to the safety recordings, too! Green Monorail So, while it’s had maintenance issues and can be inconvenient, there’s no empirically sound reason to think that the Disney World monorail is a particularly dangerous mode of transportation. Take a look at the newest changes to the Monorails here! Buses and Watercraft Same rules apply here, folks. Buses and boats at Disney operate in the same real-world rules as they do outside those magical welcome gates. Daisy Duck Bus While there have been accidents in the past, they are primarily inconveniencing rather than injurious. Buses and boats at Disney are safe and reliable forms of guest transportation, but they are still large moving vehicles. Remain seated or hold on to safety handles and do as the drivers instruct at all times. Buses and watercraft will not be overloaded in order to maintain guest safety. Learn more about the newest Disney World bus upgrades here! Concern #2: Attractions From thrilling roller coasters that whip you around like a ragdoll to thirteen-story repeated freefall drops, Disney World attractions are comprised of highly sophisticated computer systems and machinery intent on making your adrenaline spike — safely. You’ll enjoy many unforgettable experiences the Disney parks. None of these are life-threatening, but at the same time, you may be asking yourself, “Will I actually make it off this thing in one piece?” Tower of Terror Hey, it’s a totally fair question to ask yourself! But rest assured, there are many safety measures in place for these rides in order for them to operate at Disney World continuously on a daily basis for the millions of guests that visit each year. Ride and Attraction Safety Procedures Every morning before the parks open, Cast Members perform safety checks by cycling the ride vehicles and walking through the entire length of the ride tracks. This process is usually verified by a second Cast Member so there are at least two sets of eyes on everything. Expedition Everest Then there are the third-shift Cast Members, including ride mechanics and ride safety specialists, who work overnight every night on each attraction to run routine safety inspections, address any bugs that may have popped up during the day, and of course, ensure the attraction is safe for guests the following day. Dinosaur There are also many sensors and fail-safes in place throughout each attraction that at a moment’s notice will immediately stop a ride if something goes awry. (That explains one of the reasons why sometimes your Doombuggy pauses! Other reasons for ride vehicles stopping or slowing include allowing guests with mobility difficulties on and off the ride — another safety measure.) Space Mountain Overlay The Cast Members of each attraction are thoroughly trained to know all of the safety features that are specific to the ride they’re assigned and will respond swiftly and accordingly should something go wrong. Height Requirements Height requirements are also set for each attraction to ensure your and your family’s safety when riding them, and sometimes your littles will need to pass through two height checkpoints to verify they’re tall enough to ride, just to be on the safe side! But as a Disney World guest, it’s important to do your part to help ensure your safety as well. If your child is too short, don’t try to cheat the system. Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Might Have to Wait Til Next Trip if Junior is Too Short! But even though these security measures are in place, it’s still up to you to look out for your own safety. Read the posted warnings and make sure you are physically able to handle the ride you’re about to step onto and don’t have any medical issues that might be exacerbated by the attraction. Once aboard, be sure to listen carefully and abide by the Cast Members instructions to keep your lap belt fastened, remove any loose articles that may fly off during the ride, and keep your hands and arms inside the ride vehicle at all times, people! And of course, no wild dancing. Concern #3: Wildlife While we would like to think that Disney World exists in its own safe little bubble, the reality is that Disney World is located smack dab in the middle of Central Florida, a.k.a. a literal swampland. There are many native animals (including potentially dangerous snakes and reptiles) that inhabited these lands long before Mickey Mouse came along, and they continue to live there to this day. Polynesian Resort Beach Disney World attempts to prevent potentially dangerous brushes with wildlife from occurring by monitoring their grounds, posting signage near potentially hazardous areas, and creating physical barriers where deemed necessary. Disney does routinely patrol the waters for wildlife and relocates any found to safe locations. However, even without a sign, rope, or fence, don’t assume it’s safe to leave small children unattended, or to be less than cautious yourself, especially around the lakes, lagoons, and places where alligators and snakes may have taken up residence. The threat of wildlife is probably one of the most significant for you when in Walt Disney World, so be diligent. Concern #4: Outside Threats Like we said before, Disney World exists in the real world, and not some fairy tale. It is situated in a heavily-populated area of the country (with Disneyland being even more densely surrounded), and is visited by multi-millions every year. Disney employs a large team of diligent, dedicated security Cast Members who take your safety very seriously. A Disney spokesperson says this of Disney’s security: “We have a comprehensive approach to security that includes measures that are visible and others that are not.” You know those screening Cast Members at bag check every morning who ask you to open every zipper and every pouch inside your bag? That thoroughness is all for you! These cast members are checking for weapons (Disney has also instituted metal detectors at all park entrances now), glass, illegal items, and alcohol, among other banned items or contraband. Hollywood Studios Bag Check Plus, the Disney parks’ security department extends to other employees you won’t see at all on your visit! Disney has “plain clothes operatives,” or PCO’s, that are exactly what they sound like: security dressed in seemingly every day, “plain” attire. There is also local law enforcement outside of Disney World that work daily with the resort to ensure guest safety. You probably have never detected these special operators, but trust us, they’re all around you when you’re visiting Disney World! Airspace is also restricted in the 3,000 feet above, and in a three-mile radius of, Cinderella Castle in the Magic Kingdom. Aircraft can fly higher than 3,000 feet over the Magic Kingdom, but they can’t get any closer than that. So while Disney World is vulnerable to outside threats, they’ve put policies and procedures into place — many just in the last 20 years — to lower the risk of an attack of any kind in the parks. You’re likely safer here than you are in your shopping mall back home. So Just How “Safe” Is Disney World? Have people died in Disney World? Yes. There is a belief that Disney World insists that death pronouncements happen off property so that there’s no record of anyone having actually died within the resort gates. We’re not sure how true that is, but either way, there have been fatal accidents both recently and in the past. And while accidents can and do happen in Disney World, they are thankfully VERY few and far between. Over 50 million — 50 MILLION — people visit Walt Disney World every year, and the fact that accidents here usually still make the national news means that they’re not prevalent (if they were, they wouldn’t be “news”). Rest assured, Disney World is just as safe — if not significantly safer — than many other places in the country. These parks and resorts have a vested interest in ensuring that you have a positive experience, and there are many people who are working to make sure that happens so that you’ll return for another vacation. Disney is all about guest satisfaction and guests can’t be satisfied if, well…they’re in danger. So if you’re concerned about the Skyliner, Tower of Terror, Rock and Roller Coaster, or any other thrill ride or transportation option in Disney World, I hope this article has put your mind at least a bit more at ease. Nope; you’re probably NOT going to die in Disney World. Do you feel like Disney provides adequate safety precautions to its guests? Our wicked countdown to Halloween continues today with another Disney Doodle inspired by one of Disney’s best spell-casting, plan-spoiling witch characters from Disney film history. In the 1963 animated feature film, “The Sword in the Stone,” Madam Mim presents herself as Merlin’s nemesis, who even shape-shifts into different animals during a duel with him! According to artist Ashley Taylor, if Madam Mim had the chance to visit a Disney Park, she’d likely head to Fantasyland at Magic Kingdom Park for some more shape-shifting! “I love when Madam Mim turns herself into various creatures,” Ashley said. “It’s easy to imagine her turning herself into a beautiful maiden in the lovely mosaic at Cinderella Castle breezeway.” View the full article

We’re fond of Nomad Lounge at Disney’s Animal Kingdom due to their consistent delivery of hand-crafted cocktails and adventurous bites! It is a favorite amongst us all here at DFB! Nomad Lounge If you need a little refresher, The Nomad Lounge is conveniently located on the pathway towards Pandora. You’ll find it attached to Animal Kingdom’s Signature Restaurant Tiffins. It’s easily accessible from Discovery Island, Africa, and Pandora — but we enjoy it so we’d even make the trek across the park! We’re making the return once more (not for their delicious wagyu beef sliders) to try several new menu items that just dropped! We’re talking’ Nomad BOWLS and Cider, people! Nomad Lounge Updated Menu Before we dig in, we need a drink! Our bartender informed us that they often receive requests for interesting and unique ciders to try. We couldn’t wait to try the new Cluver & Jack cider! New Cider at Nomad Lounge Cluver & Jack is imported from South Africa and made with hand-picked granny smith apples. New Cider at Nomad Lounge After sipping on this refreshing new cider, we’re now ready for the main event! Nomad Lounge has introduced 3 new bowls – Chicken Manchurian Nomad Bowl, Wagyu Beef Nomad Bowl, and Togarashi-spiced Tuna Nomad Bowl. All three dishes feature, in addition the protein of your choice, Steamed Rice, Red Cabbage Kimchi, Ginger-Scallion Oil, Crimini. 3 New Nomad Bowls We’ll start with the lightest of the 3 protein options, the Togarashi-spiced Tuna Nomad Bowl. Priced at $15.00, it was seared nicely and served over a heaping helping of the rice! Togarashi-spiced Tuna Nomad Bowl This is a solid option. While it is a lighter protein, with all the accompaniments it makes for a fairly substantial meal. In case you were wondering, Togarashi is a spicy powdered assortment of dried chili peppers and other seasonings used in Japanese cuisine. Togarashi-spiced Tuna Bowl If poultry is more of your thing, next up we have the Chicken Manchurian Nomad Bowl. The least expensive of the bunch, it is priced at $11.00. Chicken Manchurian Nomad Bowl With both Indian and Chinese influences, The Manchurian Chicken was not only flavorful but we thought the texture was just perfect. In the breading, you could taste the ginger garlic paste and red chili powder. This was the clear winner for us! Chicken Manchurian Bowl at Nomad Lounge A close second was the Wagyu Beef Nomad Bowl, priced at $18.00. The wagyu was SO tender and SO flavorful. Wagyu Beef Nomad Bowl The mixture of textures is great. We loved the crunch of those noodles on top! Wagyu Beef – Nomad Lounge While we enjoyed all three, the chicken and wagyu options were the clear standouts. All proteins were very tender and cooked well. Note, each dish featured a lot of mushrooms, so be aware in case you aren’t much of a fungi fan. In all, these are all solid dishes added to a menu that keeps us coming back for more! Check out our Nomad Lounge review here! Will you be trekking off to Nomad Lounge to try these new bites? Related posts: Review: Drinks and Bites at Animal Kingdom’s Restaurantosaurus Lounge! We’ve been following the Frozen Foodie Guide treat trail that we shared with you yesterday and today it led us to Disney’s Contemporary Resort! Disney’s Contemporary Resort Little did we realize we were about to discover our new favorite Frozen 2 treat here, and maybe one of our top 10 favorite quick-service desserts of all time! We know, we’re making a pretty big deal out of this Frozen 2 dessert that we found at the Contempo Cafe, but trust and believe, we’re really onto something here! Check out the new Frozen 2 Pumpkin Spiced Donut Tart! It features a vanilla tart shell filled with pumpkin custard and it’s topped with a spiced donut cake top, cinnamon glaze, and chocolate leaves! Frozen 2 Pumpkin Spice Doughnut Tart It’s seriously SO good! The donut isn’t really a donut in the traditional sense — to us, it tasted more like pumpkin bread baked in a ring-shaped mold. The pumpkin custard stuff in the middle wasn’t too sweet, but did have a nice cinnamony flavor to it! Frozen 2 Pumpkin Spice Doughnut Tart The vanilla tart shell tasted like the same delightful crust that the Contempo Cafe uses for their Peanut Butter Pie. And the lil bit of icing glaze on top was super delicious! Frozen 2 Pumpkin Spice Doughnut Tart The white chocolate leaves and the edible portrait of Elsa and Anna didn’t really do much for us flavor-wise, but the rest of this Frozen 2 treat was really on point! Frozen 2 Pumpkin Spice Doughnut Tart If you really fancy a treat that isn’t overly sweet and you’re a fan pumpkin spice, trust us, you’re gonna want to save some room for dessert and grab a Frozen 2 Pumpkin Spiced Donut Tart for $4.99 at Disney World’s Contemporary Resort’s Contempo Cafe! And while there, be sure to check out the Arendelle Aqua Cake also at the Contempo! Are you excited about trying the new Frozen 2 treats that are available throughout the Disney World Resort? Halloween is just hours away but things are starting to get festive already at Disney’s Contemporary Resort! The Contemporary Resort’s Gingerbread Castle in Disney World is going up AS WE SPEAK! Contemporary Resort Gingerbread House The beloved Gingerbread House has found its home back on the 4th floor of the Contemporary Resort, just past the Contemporary shops on the Grand Canyon Concourse. Tis the season! Contemporary Resort Christmas! Basking in all of its sun-soaked glory in front of the large windows, construction has begun to Christmas-ify the Contemporary Resort. Check Out Last Year’s Contemporary Resort Gingerbread House The castle is a clear nod to Mary Blair, Disney imagineer and artist responsible for the design of “it’s a small world” in the parks as well as the amazing mural opposite the gingerbread castle in the Contemporary itself. Contemporary Resort Gingerbread House We’re expecting the display to feature, once again, the figures of Cinderella and her Prince Charming as they greet Contemporary Resort guests through the holiday season. No need to haul out the holly, because it’s already there along with some Christmas tree cutouts. Christmas Spirit at the Contemporary Resort! Perhaps our favorite feature of the display, we spy the Cinderella Castle Gingerbread Snack Stand off to the left making its grand return. Gingerbread Snack Stand We’re hoping to find sweet eats and treats very soon. Fancy a Frozen Hot Chocolate? Candy Cane Gelato, Frozen Hot Chocolate, and Frozen Apple Cider If a holiday tour of Walt Disney World is in your future, this is an absolute MUST STOP. We can’t wait to see the finished product as well as other resort displays to soon take shape! Want to see more gingerbread goodness in Disney World? Check out this video! While we already discovered the Hidden Truth Cupcake at The Artist’s Palette yesterday and sampled their new fat-free dairy-free Apple Cider Sorbet this afternoon, we’re back to bring you this yummy-looking little beastie — the Maleficent Cupcake! Saratoga Springs And no, this is not the same Maleficent Cupcake we reviewed from Disney’s All-Star Music Resort a few days ago! Though they are pretty similar! While Maleficent 2 has been out for a little while now, we just spotted the Maleficient Cupcake in the dessert case today! Maleficent Cupcake This spooky-looking treat is putting us in a trance with its purple and green buttercream icing accented with touches of edible glitter. And just look at its big pointy dark chocolate horns! Maleficent Cupcake The cupcake itself is made of chocolate cake and it’s stuffed with a rich caramel ganache! We felt like the chocolate flavor was definitely the stronger of the two and overpowered the more subtle notes of caramel, which came through just a little bit on the back end! Maleficent Cupcake The Maleficent Cupcake had the best flavor, overall when we enjoyed all three elements — chocolate cake, caramel ganache, and buttercream — all in one bite! Maleficent Cupcake You can pick up a Maleficent Cupcake from The Artist Palette at Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort for $5.99. And if that doesn’t satisfy your Mistress of Evil sweet tooth, check out the other tasty Maleficent Treats we’re spotted at Disney World here! What do you think of the Maleficent Cupcake? Changes keep comin’ to Walt Disney World especially with the huge transformation taking place in Epcot and with the construction of new attractions like TRON Lightcycle Run and Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure. Now, we have noticed that an iconic piece of Hollywood Studios signage has mysteriously vanished from its grounds! Entrance to Hollywood Studios Follow us over to the Animation Courtyard to see which Hollywood Studios emblem has disappeared! The archway up for discussion is located right at the entrance to the Animation Courtyard. We noticed the arch has received a fresh paint job, so we’re hoping that it’s only temporary. Animation Courtyard Archway For now, it appears a beige tarp has been put over the area where the sign once hung. Luckily, the intricate Golden Age of Hollywood murals that are situated on either side of the archway have remained untouched. It would be such a shame if these left, so we’re crossing our fingers Disney hasn’t decided to do away with them just yet! Animation Courtyard Archway We’ll keep you updated with the status of the Animation Courtyard archway and let you know as soon as the sign status changes! Are you hoping the Animation Courtyard archway is getting a new sign or will you miss the old sign? Let us know in the comments section which you’re hoping to see! Halloween is just a few days away, and we’re continuing our Disney Doodles showcase of the best witch and sorcerer characters from Disney film history. Today, artist Ashley Taylor takes a look at what the Wicked Queen from Snow White would do if she could visit a Walt Disney World theme park. According to her, the Wicked Queen may use her visit as an opportunity to seek out sweet Snow White. “The Wicked Queen, in disguise, is always on a search to find Snow White,” Ashley said. “It’s easy to imagine her snooping around Princess Fairytale Hall in hopes of finding Snow White.” View the full article

Disney has recently introduced new plant-based options throughout the parks. Apple Cider Sorbet With this has come sweet new options like the Vegan Brownie Cookie Dough and the new Apple Cider Sorbet. You can find the Apple Cider Sorbet along with the new Hidden Truth Frozen 2 Cupcake at The Artist’s Palette at Disney’s Saratoga Springs. Apple Cider Sorbet Ingredients include apple cider, water, sugar, and more. When it came to the flavor, this kind of reminded us of ‘LeFou’s Brew from Gaston’s Tavern. Apple Cider Sorbet This isn’t super-rich and tastes like frozen apple juice. We were quickly able to finish the entire container due to the small portion size. Because there is so little Apple Cider Sorbet in this cup, we think that the $4.59 price is a little steep. Apple Cider Sorbet But, if you’re in the mood for a sweet dairy-free/fat-free option, then this may be a great one for ya! Looking for more plant-based options around Walt Disney World? Check out a few options here. Will you be giving this new sweet option a try? Let us know in the comments below! Every year around Halloween, we anxiously await the return of The Great Pumpkin Pancakes! Pumpkin Pancakes at Kona Cafe Found at Disney’s Polynesian Resort’s Kona Cafe, the Pumpkin Pancakes they’re serving up this year are topped with a new cinnamon butter, pieces of spiced pecans, and candied pumpkin! Oh man, this is GONNA BE GOOD! We first spotted that the Pumpkin Pancakes had returned to this Polynesian pumpkin patch a few weeks ago when we were waiting in line for the Hatbox Ghost Tiki Mug at Trader Sams. Today, it was looking like a Pumpkin Pancake sort of day, so we caught the next hayride over to the Kona Cafe where we placed our order for the seasonal short stack along with a side of spiced ham a.k.a. SPAM, because, we fancy like that! Pumpkin Pancakes at Kona Cafe The cinnamon butter was all melty atop and slowly seeped into the pile of beautifully golden brown Pumpkin Pancakes! Believe it or not, they were served with yet, even more butter on the side, but it wasn’t totally required, despite the cries of our butter-loving hearts! Pumpkin Pancakes at Kona Cafe The pancakes themselves tasted divine — just how we’d remembered them from previous years. Light, fluffy and just the right level of sweetness to them! The special cinnamon butter, pecans, and candied pumpkin bits really brought this new version of Pumpkin Pancakes to new heights, though! Pumpkin Pancakes at Kona Cafe And when some of the buttery pancake topping accidentally found its way on top of our spiced ham, there were Halloween fireworks, and we’re not talking about the ones at Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party! Pumpkin Pancakes at Kona Cafe The Pumpkin Pancakes cost $14 and come with your choice of bacon, spiced ham, or sausage. We asked a Cast Member how long they’d be hanging around for, and after verifying with the chef, it seems likely they’ll be at Kona Cafe until at least Thanksgiving — and maybe a little white after! But remember, anything can change at Disney sooo ya never really know! Have you ever tried Kona Cafe’s Pumpkin Pancakes? Are you excited to try their slightly new version this year?
