  6. With the recent opening of Walt Disney Imagineering Presents the Epcot Experience, an impressive preview of the exciting new attractions coming to Epcot in the near future, I was reminded of just how innovative and effective the concept of a “Preview Center” has been in the development and public awareness of Disney projects through the years. And it all started in earnest nearly fifty years ago right in the heart of Central Florida. I wonder how many visitors to Walt Disney World Resort have any idea of the historical significance of the very distinct 1970s-style low-slung building with the manicured lawns and wrap-around windows, located along Hotel Plaza Boulevard in Lake Buena Vista? Now home to the Amateur Athletic Union, this unassuming building was the birthplace of the Disney “preview center” concept that has become ubiquitous with the opening and expansions of Disney Parks around the world. Although preview centers have been utilized to introduce, showcase, and promote such diverse endeavors as Disneyland Paris, Disney California Adventure, Hong Kong Disneyland, and Shanghai Disneyland, it was the Walt Disney World Preview Center that had the biggest burden in terms of introducing an entirely new concept in family leisure. In typical Walt Disney fashion, the “Disney World” concept was something entirely different that needed to be explained and conveyed. Thanks in large part to the popular “Disneyland” TV series of the 1950s and the subsequent global renown of Disneyland park, people were familiar with the idea of a stand-alone Disney park destination (groundbreaking in its own right at the time). However, by all measure, Walt Disney World Resort was simply not another Disneyland park. At a November 15, 1965, press conference announcing the “Disney World” project (featuring then Florida Governor Haydon Burns and Roy O. Disney), Walt Disney had this to say: I’ve always said there will never be another Disneyland, Governor, and I think it’s going to work out that way, but it will be the equivalent of Disneyland . . . This concept here will have to be something that is unique so that there is a distinction between Disneyland in California and whatever Disney does…notice I didn’t say “Disneyland”…Disney does in Florida. I’m very excited about it because I’ve been storing these things up for years. Certain attractions at Disneyland that have a basic appeal I might move here. Then again, I’d like to create new things. You hate to repeat yourself. I don’t like to make sequels to my pictures. I like to take a new thing and develop something, a new concept. When the Walt Disney World Preview Center opened on January 10, 1970, its goal was to communicate to guests and visiting media that this project was an all-new approach to family vacationing that encompassed not only a Disney park but all kinds of entertainment, dining, sports, and recreational activities on a scale never before imagined. At 47 square miles and 27,500 acres it was, indeed, a “Vacation Kingdom” undo itself. Featuring charming and informative hostesses, an impressive 12-minute film, intricate models, impressive artist renderings, souvenir merchandise, along with food and beverage offerings, the preview center might be considered the resort’s very first popular attraction. As a matter of fact, in its first nine months of operation, the preview center welcomed over a half million guests! One of my prized Disney possessions is the “Preview Edition” souvenir guide that was offered for sale at the preview center. It was also available by mail and occasionally at Disneyland Park in California. The impressive booklet, now almost a half-century old, is brimming fantastic early Walt Disney World concept art, plus exciting photos and illustrations. I can’t imagine that visitors to the preview center couldn’t help being impressed by what they saw. Considering the fact that Walt Disney World Resort is soon to celebrate its 50th anniversary and remains the number one family vacation destination in the world I would say that the modest, and very first, preview center for a Disney park did an admirable job of “previewing” for the public a destination that would soon be affectionately dubbed the place “Where Dreams Come True.” View the full article

  9. Disney World has a seemingly endless amount of restaurants to choose from. If you have the Disney Dining Plan, that leaves you with some difficult decisions to make — where do you eat?! Roasted Breakfast Potatoes Whether you’re looking for more bang for your buck or a unique dining atmosphere, some of the one-credit restaurants provide a better value than others. Last year, we shared our top 9 one-credit restaurants, and this year’s list has some repeats as well as new additions that will make the most of your Dining Plan credits! Keep in mind that we tried to be mindful of how to get the most out of your Dining Plan credits AS WELL AS the ambiance, theming, and overall service in our choices. A wonderful experience is just as important as getting a good value! Let’s see what made the cut for 2020! Repeat Favorites from 2019 Some restaurants that appeared in last year’s list have merited a repeat mention – these options still provide a great value and are an excellent use of your Table Service credit! Listed alphabetically, here are the restaurants we thought deserved a second look this year! Morimoto Asia (Lunch) – Disney Springs Morimoto Asia in Disney Springs is a highly acclaimed Signature Dining experience for dinner. It’s hard to imagine Japanese A5 Wagyu Beef that sells for $28 an ounce as anything other than fine dining! So it should come as no surprise that Dinner at Morimoto Asia requires 2 Dining Credits. Morimoto Asia BUT! Fear not – you can dine at Morimoto Asia for LUNCH and only need to use 1 Dining Credit! You order from a nearly identical menu, so this is an excellent value to consider! Morimoto Asia Spare Ribs Morimoto Asia has a rather large menu, providing guests with tons of delicious options to choose from. If you want to make the most of your dining credit, be sure to take a look at their meat and seafood options. From a $52 Mongolian Filet Mignon to $39 Madagascar Jumbo Shrimp, this is an easy pick to maximize value AND amazing flavor in a single Dining Credit! Read our FULL review of Morimoto Asia here! Sanaa – Animal Kingdom Lodge If you want a unique dining experience unlike any other, you’ll want to consider adding Sanaa to your list of dining reservations. Located in Animal Kingdom Lodge’s Kidani Village, this restaurant features an African and Indian-inspired menu that the more adventurous OR pickiest of eaters can all enjoy. Boerewors Braii The HUGE draw to this restaurant and the main reason why it remains on our list of recommended one-credit restaurants is that it sits right next to the resort’s Sunset Savanna, meaning you can get awesome views of the African animals that call Animal Kingdom Lodge home! If you request a window table, you’ll have prime seating to watch the animals roam. Animal Kingdom Lodge We recommend dining at Sanaa for lunch to better see the animals on the savanna. This is an awesome value because you don’t have to pay for admission to Animal Kingdom to see these incredible animals. Plus Sanaa has one of the most unique menus in Disney World! Shrimp Tinashe at Sanaa The food at Sanaa has consistently delivered in terms of uniqueness and quality. Menu items include the Potjie Inspired Butter Chicken or Braised Beef, served with rice ($28) and Mishkaki, a seasoned beef kabab ($23). Sanaa is one of the more affordable options on our list, but what you’re really getting out of your Dining Credit is an opportunity to watch the animals while you dine! Read our review of Sanaa here! Storybook Dining at Artist Point – Wilderness Lodge Artist Point at Wilderness Lodge was formally a Signature Dining experience but recently switched to character dining with Snow White! Now known as Storybook Dining at Artist Point, guests can enjoy a prix-fixe meal with some of their favorite characters! Storybook Dining at Artist Point The prices certainly lend to Storybook Dining being a great value – dinner costs $59 per adult and $35 per child. If Snow White is your favorite princess, this is a great alternative to Cinderella’s Royal Table. Shared Appetizers at Storybook Dining The appetizers and desserts are a variety of small tastes shared by the table and feature really unique flavors and gorgeous presentations (umm…Poison Apples and Gooseberry Pie? Yes please!). Royal Prime Rib Roast The entrees were large and flavorful as well — our favorites were the Royal Prime Rib Roast and the Magic Mirror Slow-braised Pork Shank! Plus, you get a rare chance to meet Dopey, Grumpy, Snow White, AND the Evil Queen. Totally worth it! Check out our review of Storybook Dining here! Wolfgang Puck Bar & Grill – Disney Springs Where else in Disney Springs can you get a delicious meal and put your one-credit to REALLY good use? Look no further than Wolfgang Puck Bar & Grill. This made our 2019 list and we wanted to bring it back for you this year! Tempura Calamari and Shrimp While the menu features an excellent selection of pizzas and pastas, the real stars of the menu are their wood-grilled steaks. When you order an 8 oz Filet Mignon for $59, you know you’re in for a treat. Toast to a wonderful dinner with a glass of Henriot ‘Brut Souverain’ Champagne ($18), and finish off your meal with a $10 Chocolate Lava Cake – that’s $87 for one person! Mesquite Grilled NY Strip Steak Frites from Lunch at Wolfgang Puck Bar & Grill Everything from appetizers, to drinks, to entrees, to dessert were impressive here. With a pricey menu, this spot is a wonderful pick for a group looking for a great variety when maximizing value of their Dining Plan credits! Read our full review of Wolfgang Puck Bar & Grill here! NEW Additions for 2020 While there are some tried and true repeats from 2019’s list, we wanted to share a few new, additional choices for you to consider. These restaurants all offer excellent menus AND a unique atmosphere to match! Teppan Edo – Epcot Teppan Edo in Epcot’s World Showcase is just so much fun! It was a top one-credit pick for us in 2018 and we missed it so much last year, we brought it back! It’s a dining experience unlike any other, even compared to all the other unique dining options in Epcot! The food here is pretty stellar and the unique service they provide is something different for your whole family to enjoy! Teppan Edo chef in action Teppan Edo is a hibachi grill, very similar to a Benihana or other Japanese grills in many towns. So why would you want to dine here if you’ve got a perfectly good hibachi joint back home? Obviously, because it’s better at Disney. But seriously, take your local hibachi grill and make it like…REALLY good. We’re talking uber-fresh veggies, meats, and seafood, and dedicated, phenomenal chefs preparing your meal right in front of you at your table! For one dining credit you get dinner AND a show! Whether they are tossing shrimp into their hat or drawing your favorite Disney characters on the grill, the chefs at Teppan Edo really know how to entertain. Teppan Edo You can order a variety of meats or seafood — our pick is the Steak and Shrimp Combo meal for $37! Pair that with a $14 glass of Martin Ray Cabernet Sauvignon and finish your meal with a Green Tea Mousse Cake for $6.50, you’re looking at a nearly $60 lunch! Kids’ meals are on the higher end of the scale too, with $16 options such as Julienned Steak or Salmon. Can’t beat a HUGE quality meal and a fun show to boot! Check out our review of Teppan Edo HERE! Topolino’s Terrace (Breakfast) – Riviera Resort The brand new Riviera Resort‘s flagship rooftop restaurant Topolino’s Terrace — Flavors of the Riviera recently opened in December 2019 and brings both great value and a fantastic character dining option. Dinner at Topolino’s Terrace is 2 credits, but their Breakfast à la Art is a prix fixe character breakfast is only 1 credit, folks! Quiche Gruyere Breakfast is somewhat pricey which makes this a truly valuable use of a Table Service credit, coming in at $45 per adult and $24 per child. Not only that, but you’re meeting characters in some SUPER adorable costumes (Painter Mickey!), not to mention you’re getting some awesome rooftop views and REALLY delicious food! Topolino’s Terrace Breakfast a la Art Characters We enjoyed everything we tried from the delicious Wood-Fired Butchers Steak to the fresh baked Croissant au Jambon that was positively drenched in creamy Bechamel sauce! Even the kids’ menu is a blast with fun options like Mickey Waffle Dippers served on a stick with a variety of dipping sauces! Wood-Fired Butchers Steak We think the overall experience plus quality of food puts Topolino’s Terrace high on our list of recommended one-credit value restaurants. Read our review of breakfast at Topolino’s Terrace here! ‘Ohana – Polynesian Village Resort Rounding out our 2020 list of recommended one-credit restaurants is a classic favorite that has truly stood the test of time when it comes to Disney World dining. ‘Ohana at the Polynesian Village Resort is a tried and true dining location that garners many repeat visits from guests (us included!). Sides — Wontons, Noodles, Stir Fried Vegetables, Chicken Wings In the morning you can enjoy breakfast with Mickey, Stitch, Lilo, and Pluto, which offers even more value for families looking to meet characters without having to wait in lines. Say Aloha to Mickey and Friends at ‘Ohana for Breakfast But while breakfast is good, dinner is where it’s at featuring all you care to eat delectable meat skewers, potstickers, chicken wings, noodles, and more. (Stop Licking the Screen Plz!) If you’re itchin’ for a tropical drink, you can sip on the famous Lapu Lapu ($18) or the Puka Punch ($14), among others, from neighboring Tambu Lounge. Lapu Lapu You’re putting your one-credit to work here! ‘Ohana has a prix-fixe menu for both breakfast and dinner, costing $41 per adult and $54 per adult, respectively. 19. We were up with the birds this morning to grab a coveted boarding group to ride Rise of the Resistance in Hollywood Studios today. Rise of the Resistance Standby Line But even though we were up before the Bright Suns, we still had to wait an hour and a half to ride the popular attraction! Folks have been flocking to Hollywood Studios in recent weeks to ride Rise of the Resistance since it opened last month, often lining up at the park hours before it officially opens to reserve a spot in the virtual queue via the My Disney Experience app. Rise of the Resistance Standby Line And even though you can only reserve a boarding group once Hollywood Studios is open for the day and you step inside the park, you still gotta get here really early before all the boarding groups are given out. Typically, guests can expect a small bit of line time, especially if things are running smoothly. But this evening, we were thwarted by a sea of people still waiting to ride the attraction even after their boarding groups were called! The line stretched all the way beyond the entrance to Galaxy’s Edge! Rise of the Resistance Standby Line Isn’t a 90-minute wait time on top of getting up hours before what is humanly natural too big of an ask? Don’t get us wrong — we think very highly Rise of the Resistance, but even this seemed like a bit much for us die-hard Disney fans. Rise of the Resistance Standby Line While we don’t know what caused the substantial backup, we’re hoping that things will be running more smoothly soon. If you’re hoping to ride Rise of the Resistance in Hollywood Studios or in Disneyland when it opens there this Friday, keep in mind doing so will take a lot of careful planning and a considerable devotion of your time! 20. We know you’re busy warming up your voice for when the Beauty and the Beast Sing-Along debuts this Friday in Epcot’s France pavilion! Palais du Cinéma But here’s a critical detail we noticed if you’re planning on seeing the show when it opens! The new Beauty and the Beast Sing-Along will open on January 17th at Palais de Cinéma in Epcot’s World Showcase, but it isn’t taking the place of the longtime-running Impressions de France. Instead, the two films will be sharing the France pavilion theater. And although Disney hasn’t officially published the schedule for when the Beauty and the Beast Sing-Along will be running, Disney has updated its hours online for Impressions de France. Beauty and the Beast Sing-Along Currently, Impressions de France is scheduled to run from 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM starting on January 17th and while we can’t confirm the showtimes for Beauty and the Beast Sing-Along yet, it looks like it will take up the earlier, more significant chunk of the day while Impressions de France will be showing for a brief slot of time in the evenings. Of course, this could always change. So, make sure you’re checking your My Disney Experience app for details. ©Disney Impressions de France Hours If you really want to see Beauty and the Beast Sing-Along on your next visit to Epcot, keep in mind Impressions de France will begin playing at 7:30 PM, so you’ll want to go before then. And if you’re super-stoked to see the newly-remastered Impressions de France, just know you’ll have to wait until the last hour and a half of the park’s day– and even then you’ll only have a short window of opportunity to enjoy it! We will update you if any changes are made to the times! You can read all about the NEW Beauty and the Beast Sing-Along and here! 24. The spirit of aloha ran deep at Walt Disney World last week, as we received the news that, surrounded by her loving ‘ohana, Kau’ihealani Mahikoa Brandt—known to our cast and guests alike as “‘Anake Kau’i” (“Aunty Kau’i”)—had peacefully passed away. Aunty Kau’i was a kumu hula (hula master) performing in Hawai’i when Disney talent scouts recruited her to come to California and dance the hula three times a day in Adventureland. In 1971, she traveled to Florida as an Opening Day cast member to launch the first dinner-show luau at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort. It was supposed to be a three-month assignment, but Florida agreed with her and—punctuated by occasional returns to Hawai’i to participate in hula festivals—Aunty Kau’i stayed on. In time, she became a Cultural Ambassador at Disney’s Polynesian Village, greeting guests with her handmade leis and grass skirts and teaching guests and cast alike to dance the hula as she happily swayed in her brightly colored muʻumuʻu and strummed her ‘ukulele. A photograph with a smiling Aunty Kau’i became a coveted treasure for hundreds of thousands of guests, and children sought her out when their families returned for vacations. The day after she passed, Walt Disney World Resort President Josh D’Amaro visited her home resort with Thomas Mazloum, senior vice president of Resorts and Transportation. Together with cast members of the Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, they gathered at sunset to remember their longtime friend in Hawaiian and English and song. Afterward, in longstanding Hawaiian tradition, they cast their funeral leis upon the water—an illustration of the cycle of life.
