  1. While a day at the Magic Kingdom may seem destined to be expensive, there are ways to enjoy a delicious meal at the “Most Magical Place on Earth” without breaking the bank. Main Street U.S.A. Train Station In fact, believe it or not, you can have a filling meal at the Magic Kingdom for LESS THAN $20! How, well it all depends on the right menu choices! Let’s start off at the Columbia Harbour House, the New England seafood restaurant located in Liberty Square. While many of the items on the menu come in at under $20, there are a couple that stand out to us as favorites. Columbia Harbour House For $14.79, you can get Maple-Glazed Salmon with green beans and rice. Maple-mustard glazed salmon If you’re sharing with someone else, or simply want to enjoy a rare deep-fried treat, there’s the $14.29 Trio Platter. This offering includes beer-battered shrimp, fried chicken, and beer-battered fish served with French fries and Hushpuppies! Trio Platter at Columbia Harbor House Finally, the restaurant also features a plant-based option for under $20 in the plant-based Crispy Mushroom Roll, which features cornmeal-fried mushrooms, plant-based spicy tartar sauce, lettuce, tomatoes, and a pickle served with French fries and costs $13. Plant-based Mushroom Roll If you’re not feeling any of the Columbia Harbor House options, head over to the Plaza Restaurant instead. While most of the items on this turn-of-the-century-themed eater are over $20, one exception is the $17 Chipotle Barbecue Pork Sandwich, which features slow-cooked pulled pork with Coca-Cola Chipotle Barbecue Sauce and Coleslaw served on a toasted potato roll. Plaza While we’ve highlighted these options, there are still others scattered around the park on various menus. In addition, other tips we’d recommend to keep your Magic Kingdom food budget under $20 include ordering kids’ meal options and sticking to free water as your beverage. 2. Disney versus Universal — it’s been a hot debate for years and continues to be a hot debate today, especially with Epic Universe joining the lineup. Universal Studios Despite the projected earnings for Epic Universe in its first year being over one billion dollars, the rest of Universal’s theme park revenue doesn’t seem to be doing so hot. NBCUniversal recently held its first-quarter earnings call, and revenue for the parks was down. Comcast released its report on NBCUniversal’s first-quarter financial results, and according to the numbers, theme park revenue was down 5% to around $1.88 billion. The report attributed this to lower visitor attendance due to the Los Angeles wildfires. Universal Studios Hollywood Both Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal CityWalk closed during the January wildfires that devastated California, which most likely had an impact on the overall losses Universal saw in the theme park division during the first quarter. In addition to these losses, Comcast reported higher operating expenses this quarter, which included “around $100 million of pre-opening costs for Epic Universe ahead of the scheduled opening in May 2025.” It’s certainly no secret that Universal spared no expense to bring Epic Universe to life. Universal Studios Hollywood In a press release, Comcast stated, “Theme Parks remain on an incredible growth trajectory… We could not be more excited for the grand opening of Epic Universe in Orlando next month and our plans to bring a new world-class theme park to the UK.” Epic Universe Universal recently announced plans to bring a theme park to Bedford, UK, which is expected to open in 2031. While nothing has been confirmed, rumors have suggested the park could have lands featuring the Lord of the Rings, Paddington, and the James Bond franchise. ©Universal We’ll be on the lookout for more updates from Universal. In the meantime, stay tuned to the Disney Food Blog for the latest theme park news and more! 4. Tucked away in Dark Universe is a small, easy-to-miss little shack known as De Lacey’s Cottage. If you’re looking for fine dining in Darkmoor Village, keep moving (it is a rather dilapidated-looking shack, after all), but for all you snackers who love a “hidden gem,” we might have stumbled on a new winner in Epic Universe. We love a “hole in the wall” restaurant, but this shack is really taking things to the next level We’ve been snacking our way through all kinds of universes at Epic Universe, but now, our journey has taken us to the place “where the original Frankenstein’s Monster once received sustenance and friendship.” Aww — how cute! These days, the story goes that snacks and “cool treats” are offered at De Lacey’s Cottage, including things like cinnamon bites, pretzels, and more. So — is the original Frankenstein’s Monster’s old hangout still worth visiting? Let’s find out! Behold! We have arrived at De Lacey’s Cottage — just in time for a little snack! Now, be warned. This place is a little difficult to find since it’s off the beaten path. There isn’t a whole lot of seating in the area, and we didn’t see much shade, so be prepared to eat and walk with your food here. Luckily, the snack options are handheld bites that are easy to transport. The menu currently features the Frank & Friends Pretzel served with cheese for $12.99 and the Warm Hearted Cinnamon Bites for $7.99. We also spotted a range of beverages, including things like Monster Energy Drinks (how fitting!), Powerade, and Canned Beers. Let’s see what we can get! We went for the Warm Hearted Cinnamon Roll Bites, which are warm cinnamon sugar donut bites with cream cheese icing and streusel — YUM! Sadly, these cinnamon bites are not stuffed with that sweet cream cheese icing, but luckily, the topping was pretty generous. The DFB team is very pro-icing, so give us alllll the sweet, gooey goodness. Warm Hearted Cinnamon Roll Bites Now, let’s talk specifics. These cinnamon roll bites were great! Were they the bestest, most showstopping cinnamon rolls we’ve ever had? No. But you really can’t go wrong with donut-like cinnamon balls and cream cheese. They’re served warm and fresh, so the cream cheese gets all melty and smooth. If you’ve got a picky eater in the group, this is an excellent option. Look at all that sugar! Our only complaint was the texture. Remember how we said the cream cheese melted onto our cinnamon bites? Well, that cinnamon sugar topping mixes in with the cream cheese, so you get kind of a rough, gritty texture when you take a bite. You can see pretty clearly in the photo that they do NOT skimp on the sugar topping, but the sugar was almost so concentrated on top of the cream cheese icing that it got a little grainy. But this did not impact the flavor — we still recommend these for anyone looking for a quick, easy sweet treat. Don’t want to go through all of the stress of booking your Epic Universe trip alone? 5. Universal just EXTENDED annual passholder preview dates for Epic Universe! Since early previews debuted for Universal’s new Epic Universe park, fans have been flocking to purchase tickets to see the park before its official opening on May 22nd. Now that we’ve had a chance to look inside and try out the restaurants you find around the park, we’ve wanted even MORE time to experience it all. Now, Universal seems to be granting that wish for those who are eligible! If the previous dates for Epic Universe previews just didn’t work out for you, OR you’re like us and just want to keep visiting the park before it opens, Universal’s just opened up more days to do just that! ©Universal Universal quietly opened more availability to its annual passholders to purchase advance tickets to visit Epic Universe through May 19th. When Universal annual passholders were initially given dates to experience the park before regular day ticket visitors were able to, Universal’s original cutoff date for these previews was May 8th. That’s right — now there are 11 MORE days to visit Epic Universe before it opens! Epic Universe Several dates had already sold out, so this provides more passholders with an opportunity to visit early. We’ve been able to step inside its portals several times since these previews first opened to annual passholders and, most recently, included visitors purchasing tickets that are staying at a Universal Orlando hotel. Portal Entrance to Isle of Berk Checking the prices of these additional dates, it seems to have fallen in line with similar pricing to what we’ve already seen for these tickets. Most of the new dates are priced around $123 per person per day, with the newly added Saturdays as the highest at $131. Most of the park’s operating hours are listed for May 9th through the 14th from 10 AM-9 PM, with May 15th through the 19th from 9 AM- 8 PM. If you’re looking to get in on the fun early (or just want to grab another day inside Epic Universe early) AND you’re currently an active Universal Orlando annual passholder, preview tickets can be purchased in the Universal Orlando app or on the website. ©Universal You’ll need to make sure your annual passholder card number is linked inside the wallet of your app, and if you’re planning to purchase tickets for multiple passholders on the same transaction to attend on the same day, they’ll also need to be linked in the wallet of the person buying the tickets. Preview tickets are limited to 1 per passholder per preview date so this means you CAN purchase multiple dates if you wish. Don’t go away! We’ll be bringing you along with us as we visit Universal’s Epic Universe on its opening day (and before). Be sure to stay tuned with us at DFB for all the latest. 6. Walt Disney knew that it took people to make dreams reality and cast members have been at the heart of carrying on Walt’s vision for nearly 70 years. One cast member who carries on Walt’s ideals of creating happiness in his own exceptional way is Antonio Viray. Working in attractions at Disney California Adventure park, Antonio’s personalized approach to guest service has helped him hit a major service milestone this month. Not only has Antonio received 700 Cast Compliments (735 now, to be exact!) for having fun and creating memorable moments with guests, but he has also become an online sensation for his signature magic making technique: dance. “As attractions cast members, we’re in direct contact with the guest. We’re the first impression for the guest.” Antonio continues, “I want to make sure when they step in front of me, that the smile will last until they leave the park.” Although Antonio has inspired others to recognize him for the joy he creates, he has never seen the videos that his dance moves have been featured in… until now. See Antonio’s reaction to all of the guest created videos when we revealed his true impact on those who have been fortunate to meet him. What’s Antonio’s secret? “I’m still a kid at heart,” Antonio smiles shyly. While explaining why it’s so important to him to go above and beyond to show off his dance moves at work and create happiness and laughter for others, Antonio shared, “It’s what our core values are – that’s what [Disney’s] service is all about. We’re here to help the guests and do the best we can do to make their stay here and visit memorable.” Antonio fist bumps guests in front of the Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind attraction. Spreading Happiness Wherever He Goes Although Antonio calls Disneyland Resort his home, his imprint is worldwide. Achieving a Bachelor of Science in Tourism from the University of the Philippines in Quezon City, and working in the hospitality industry in Dubai and Qatar for nearly a decade before starting at Disney, Antonio has built relationships with people from around the world. With his experience in guest service and hospitality allowing him to continue to do so in his current role at the resort, Antonio has dedicated his career to the magic of storytelling and creating moments of happiness for others, all while having a blast. “Wherever I am, I create magic…. That’s why most of my fellow cast members ask me ‘Antonio, where do you get your energy?’ Because… I don’t stop. I keep doing this the whole time, like Captain America. I can do this all day,” Antonio laughs. Antonio makes guests at Pixar Pier laugh with his dance moves. As fate would have it, Antonio just celebrated 18 magical years with Disneyland Resort. So, ahead of International Dance Day on April 29, we pay tribute to Antonio for being an inspiration to us all, one dance move at a time. To Antonio, along with the thousands of fun-loving cast members who inspire moments of laughter and joy every single day, thank you for your service in making dreams come true. 11. I was a Disney World Cast Member for almost four years and am still an Annual Passholder who spends much of my free time at Disney World. As cliche as it sounds, the parks are my happy place. While I didn’t grow up going to Disney World, in the past six years, I have been hundreds of times. Magic Kingdom While my trips to Disney World may not be the same as those of someone traveling from elsewhere, I have still spent lots of time experiencing the Disney Parks. I am sharing some of the things that I wish you knew before going to Disney World! You don’t have to do EVERYTHING to have a great time. And I hate to break it to you, but there is no way you can do everything during your trip. I have been to Disney World hundreds of times, and I am still having new experiences. However, pick your top priorities and make sure you get those done. Everything else is icing on the cake! Disney’s Animal Kingdom Plan your days so you can hit your priorities, but don’t forget to have some time for relaxation and going with the flow. Sometimes, my favorite memories come when I don’t have any specific plans, and I just see where the park takes me. I Go to Disney World Every Day. Here Are My Top 5 Comfort Rides. You don’t have to spend LOTS of money to have a great trip. A Disney World vacation is expensive! There is really no way around it, but I think it truly is a magical trip. Of course, you will need to purchase a couple of things no matter what: transportation to and from Disney World, hotel, and park tickets. But you don’t have to book the fanciest meals, spend extra on Lightning Lane Passes, or book the nicest hotel room to have a great time. EPCOT You can always opt for quick service meals or bring your own food into the park. Depending on your plans, you likely won’t even spend that much time at your hotel, and you can always resort hop to other hotels to explore. You can prioritize rides and spend time exploring the parks versus feeling like you have to ride every attraction. As hard as it might be, you don’t have to spend hundreds on Disney merchandise either. I always enjoy giving myself a souvenir budget and hunting for the best souvenir to spend my money on. The 10 BEST Quick Service Restaurants in Magic Kingdom for 2025 There isn’t a “right” or “wrong” way to do Disney. Love getting up at 5am and spending all day at the parks? Great. Want to sleep in and only spend a few hours at the park? Wonderful. Don’t even want to go to the parks and just want to enjoy the hotel? Sounds good. A trip to Disney World should be a vacation, and that means doing things that you enjoy. Sure, it gets harder to balance lots of wants and desires if you are traveling with kids or a larger group, but don’t lose sight of the fact that Disney World should be a vacation. Hollywood Studios Too often, I would see families that were in such a rush to get things done that no one was having fun. Plan for your group, and also know that it is okay to adjust plans once you get to Disney World. Make sure you have at least time to eat, hydrate, and sleep. But don’t feel bad for adding in extra relaxation time, or even A LOT extra relaxation time. I’ve Tried Every Ride Hack in Disney World, And I’m Sharing the 3 That Work Every Time Cast Members want you to have the best vacation, so please be nice to them! Being a Cast Member isn’t all sunshine and roses, and while I loved my time as a Cast Member, I had my fair share of unpleasant experiences. Cast Members are not out to try to ruin your vacation; in fact, they all want to help you have the best vacation. But there are some things they can’t do or fix. Cast Members are the MAGIC! They would love to answer questions or point you in the right direction, and they also want to help make things right, but approaching Cast Members nicely and respectfully will go a long way. 3 Things Disney World Ride Cast Members Want To Tell You But Won’t Cause They’re Too Nice Encourage everyone to do a bit of research. I am not saying they have to spend hours and hours learning about every nook and cranny in Disney World, but encourage everyone in your family or group to at least learn a bit about what to expect and what there is to do. Have each person bring a few ideas of things they would really like to do to make sure everyone is enjoying their time. EPCOT You can sit down as a family and watch one of our YouTube videos – we have an ultimate guide video for each Disney World park! – to get a lay of the land and get everyone excited about the trip. For really young kiddos or kiddos you are trying to surprise, this may not be doable, but I have always felt that everyone enjoys their time more when they get to do things that really excite them. Disney’s Animal Kingdom The ULTIMATE Guide to Planning A Walt Disney World Vacation It can be easy to fall into a hole of learning every little detail and planning every second of your day, but I also think that can lead to burnout and everyone not having as fun of a time. If that works for your family, though, keep doing it! 13. Summer is almost here, which means it’s time to start getting excited about summer eats at Disney World! Disney World Few things are more nostalgic than chowing down on some tasty snacks at the Disney Parks over the summer. It’s even better when the snacks are affordable! With summer coming up and the crowds coming in, we’re taking a look at some of our favorite Magic Kingdom lunches under $20 that hit just right — especially over the summer! When it comes to affordable Disney World eats, it’s hard to beat these! Ham and Gruyère Tart at Gaston’s Tavern Head over to Gaston’s Tavern in Magic Kingdom for some tasty American cuisine, such as the Ham and Gruyère Tart! Ham and Gruyere Tart This snack is VERY popular here at DFB and is made with crispy croissant dough topped with ham and gruyère and served with chips. That flaky crust! This flaky and oh-so-delicious snack will only set you back $9.49! A Corn Dog at Sleepy Hollow — Magic Kingdom Magic Kingdom’s Sleepy Hollow is definitely known for its Mickey Waffles and funnel cakes, but few things embody summer quite like a corn dog! Golden fried perfection You can grab a Hand-dipped Corn Dog and House-made Chips for $11.49, and we absolutely recommend doing so! It comes with chips, too! A delicious meal that’s PERFECT for when you’re on the go, these corn dogs are reliable, fried to perfection, and are so tasty! Anything at Columbia Harbour House Columbia Harbour is easily one of the best quick-service restaurants at Magic Kingdom, and picking one item from the restaurant is a tough ask. Columbia Harbour House The menu offers lots of items inspired by New England seafood and more. Most of the items on the menu are under $15, but you can also get a Lobster Roll for $18.99 if you’re feeling like a big spender! Hushpuppies We are MASSIVE fans of the Hushpuppies here, which miraculously returned to the restaurant last summer. These glorious little balls of fried cornmeal come with the Trio Platter (Combination of Beer-battered Shrimp, Chicken, and Beer-battered Fish served with French Fries and Hushpuppies) for $14.29, or you can get six on their own for $4.99! Custom Popcorn Mix at Main Street Confectionery Main Street Confectionery is an old-fashioned candy shop packed with character-inspired candy apples and Mickey cereal treats. But one of our favorite summer snacks to get here is Custom Popcorn Mix! Snickers Popcorn Mix The Kernel Kitchen lets you create your own popcorn mix where you can select four popcorn flavors, add your favorite flavor chocolate drizzle, and add in a few candy mix-ins to create your perfect popcorn concoction! S’mores Popcorn Mix You’ll find seasonal tubs all year long, so check back again this summer to see what the under $20 snack looks like! Loaded Fries at The Plaza Restaurant You’ll find plenty of casual eats like burgers, sandwiches, and shakes at The Plaza Restaurant, but it’s a fun side that keeps us coming back for more. Plaza Loaded Fries For $15, you can get Loaded Fries, which are served with crispy fries, melted cheddar, bacon, green onion, and spicy sour cream! Plaza Loaded Fries These fries literally hit the spot and take the fry game to a whole new level. Fried Mozzarella and Garlic Bread at Tony’s Town Square Restaurant Head over to Tony’s Town Square in Main Street, U.S.A. for Italian food, a look at where Lady and the Tramp shared their first kiss, and two fan-favorite appetizers! We really dig the Fried Mozzarella with Spicy Creamy Tomato Sauce for $15 as well as the Tony’s Garlic Bread For The Table served with toasted ciabatta with roasted garlic butter and parmesan fonduta for $13. Cheesy, delicious, and worth the visit all on their own, you can’t go wrong with either of these apps! 15. Something BIG is happening over in Disneyland. The resort is celebrating its 70th anniversary! ©Disney A big celebration is in store, too, which will bring new ride updates, special decor on Sleeping Beauty Castle and throughout Disneyland Park, PLUS the return of two parades. One of those parades is the popular Paint The Night parade, but Disney has revealed a change being made to that parade that you might want to know about. We were looking over all the details about the Paint the Night parade, which will be returning on May 16th at 8:45 PM and 10:45 PM. Disney has listed some of the floats you can expect to see, but The Incredibles float is not listed and is reportedly not returning this year. Incredibles Float Concept Art ©Disney Instead, the Frozen float will be returning. The Incredibles float replaced the Frozen float in 2018, but Disney has confirmed the Frozen Fractals float will be returning to the parade for the first time since its initial run. ©Disney The parade will also include a host of other Disney and Pixar characters from Monsters, Inc., Cars, Toy Story, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and more. Parade characters include Ariel, Belle, Buzz and Woody, Mike and Sulley, Peter Pan, Rapunzel, and more! ©Disney The parade will feature a special rendition of “When Can I See You Again” by Owl City, as well as songs from Disney and Pixar movies, PLUS a nod to the Main Street Electrical Parade. Disneyland’s 70th Anniversary Celebration kicks off on May 16th and will run throughout the year and into 2026, so you’ll want to be sure to check it out. Stay tuned to DFB for more. 16. The majority of theme park injuries in the first quarter of 2025 were related to big roller coasters, according to a state report, although less intense rides and attractions also made appearances. Coasters at Universal Orlando, Walt Disney World and SeaWorld Orlando were listed six times for the January-March period by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. The state’s major theme parks self-report about visitors who are injured on their rides and require at least 24 hours of hospitalization. Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventures, a coaster that launches into the Wizarding World of Harry Potter area at Universal’s Islands of Adventure theme park, appeared three times on the latest report. On Feb. 3, a 33-year-old man had a seizure after experiencing the attraction. On March 8, a 53-year-old man had chest pains after the Hagrid ride, as did a 26-year-old man on March 18. The men in the March incidents had pre-existing conditions, the report says. On March 28, a 49-year-old woman fainted after riding the Manta coaster at SeaWorld Orlando. At Walt Disney World, a 73-year-old woman felt nauseated after leaving Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, a spinning indoor coaster at Epcot, on Jan. 21, and a 14-year-old female had abdominal pain after Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster at Disney’s Hollywood Studios on March 24. A 78-year-old woman felt faint after Star Tours, a simulator attraction, at Hollywood Studios on Jan. 29. A 25-year-old woman had “seizure-like symptoms” after being on Alien Swirling Saucers in that park’s Toy Story Land on March 27, the report said. Less intense-appearing attractions also were in the report. On Jan. 17, an 82-year-old woman fell and injured her ankle as she exited Epcot’s Frozen Ever After water ride. At Magic Kingdom, a 51-year-old man felt shortness of breath after Peter Pan’s Flight at Magic Kingdom on Jan. 24, and a 68-year-old woman fell and injured her leg after exiting Mad Tea Party (a.k.a. the teacups) at the same park on March 31. No injuries were reported from Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Universal Studios, Legoland Florida or Busch Gardens Tampa Bay theme parks. The state does not receive health updates after the initial assessments. Email me at dbevil@orlandosentinel.com. BlueSky: @themeparksdb. Threads account: @dbevil. X account: @themeparks. 18. The Walt Disney Company’s financial data is closely monitored. Fans analyze earnings calls for new announcements. Investors look for ways to get a return on their investment. Soon, The Walt Disney Company will host its fiscal second quarter earnings call, where we can expect to learn about Disney’s parks division, Disney+, ESPN, and more. The financial results will be shared on May 7th, 2025. Magic Kingdom However, ahead of both the second-quarter earnings call and the grand opening of Universal’s new theme park, Epic Universe, Disney quietly released a new page dedicated to “Disney’s Impact on the American Economy.” The Walt Disney Company’s corporate website has a new page that showcases the company’s impact on the American economy. The page begins with a message from CEO Bob Iger. In it, Iger touches on Disney’s $30 billion theme park investment, its plan to spend over $23 billion on movie and TV production in 2025, and the “unwavering commitment to being a force for good in the world.” ©Disney The page focuses on Disney’s domestic spending and contributions to the U.S. economy. Disney boasts, “From entertainment and travel to consumer products and sports, we employ 160,000 people in all 50 states.” Moreover, Disney has promised to add approximately 10,000 new jobs in Florida and California as the company moves forward with its $30 billion investment. ©Disney | Walt Disney Company Headquarters Notably, the page did not detail a timeline for Disney’s $30 billion investment, nor did it mention any specific additions or expansions in the theme parks. In the past, Disney has stated that it plans to invest $60 billion in the Disney Parks, Experiences, and Products segment of the company over the next decade. ©Disney Back in 2023, Disney also shared a report that indicated the company owns more than 1000 acres of land for future developments at the theme parks. The land is spread across various sites, but the available land is approximately the size of seven new Disneyland Parks. ©Disney We expect Disney to highlight its theme park investment goals in the upcoming earnings call. 19. Universal’s Epic Universe is set to open to the public on May 22nd, and we can confidently say that the park is going to be a game-changer. Epic Universe The technologically advanced theme park is set to change the face of Universal Orlando forever, including the resort’s original theme parks: Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure. Universal Studios Florida and the Universal Orlando Resort as a whole first opened 35 years ago in the summer of 1990. Change has been a constant at the park for the better part of its lifetime, and currently the E.T. Adventure is the ONLY opening day attraction still operating at the Studios park today. Universal Studios Florida The resort’s second theme park, Islands of Adventure, opened in 1999. And, as opposed to its counterpart, much about the park is still almost identical to its opening day 25+ years ago. Now, of course, there is a massive boy wizard-shaped caveat in the first Wizarding World of Harry Potter, which opened at the park in 2010. However, beyond that land and Jurassic Park’s Velocicoaster and Kong: Skull Island, much of the rest of the park (Marvel Superhero Island, Seuss Landing, and Cartoon Lagoon) has been essentially untouched. Islands of Adventure Main Entrance So, How is the Opening of Epic Universe Going to Change Both of These Divergent Parks? For starters, Epic’s opening will likely lead to larger crowds at both Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure, as Universal was initially only offering Epic Universe tickets as part of multiple day ticket and hotel packages. Beyond initial crowds, history also tells us that the opening of the new park will likely lead Universal to make additions to the first two parks. For example, the aforementioned transformation of Universal Studios Florida didn’t truly begin until after Islands of Adventure opened. The original Studios park had remained relatively stable throughout its first decade, with few major additions or changes. However, following the opening of its neighboring park (which featured popular rides including The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, and Jurassic Park River Adventure at opening) the original park added Men In Black: Alien Attack, Revenge of the Mummy (replacing Kongfrontation), The Simpsons Ride (Replacing Back to the Future: The Ride), and Hollywood Rip Ride Rocket within a decade. Universal Studios Florida Lagoon Islands of Adventure took the baton back for the 2010 opening of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter: Hogsmeade in 2010, only for Universal Studios Florida to add the connected sister land Wizarding World of Harry Potter: Diagon Alley in 2014. Over the rest of the decade, each other parks saw attractions added including Velocicoaster and Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure at Islands of Adventure, and Transformers: The Ride 3D, Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem, Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon, Fast & Furious Supercharged, Illumination’s Villain-Con Minion Blast, and the whole of Dreamworks Land at Universal Studios Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure Suffice to say, given this history, that the presumably successful opening of Epic Universe could lead to new attractions being added to both Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure. Gringotts The opening of Epic Universe promises to change the Universal Orlando Resort forever, including likely leading to at least some major alterations to both Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure. Stay tuned to DFB for more updates on Universal’s transformation. Why Universal Could Be Empty in 2025 Join the DFB Newsletter to get all the breaking news right in your inbox! 21. When it comes to dining at Disney World, you’ve got a TON of options. Want something quick and easy? You’ve got it. Something middle of the road and comforting? Yep, that too. And if you’re looking for something upscale and luxurious, you can find that as well. Welcome to Disney World We recently stopped by Backlot Express at Hollywood Studios to see what was cookin’, and now we’re bringing you our FULL review. Is it worth a stop on your next trip to the Most Magical Place on Earth? Find out here! Atmosphere This restaurant is a quick service staple of Hollywood Studios! This backlot-inspired eatery is located in Echo Lake right next to The Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular and Star Tours. Backlot Express There is tons of covered outdoor seating as well as bar seating for anyone looking to grab lunch or even just take a break during your busy park day. Outside seating Inside, you can also find quite a bit of additional seating and fun decor inspired by movie sets. You might even spot a nod to some extinct attractions and older Disney films. Paint Department’s office The atmosphere is lively and often busy since it’s such a large spot. While the theming isn’t over the top, it’s simple and makes for an open atmosphere. In-door seating! There are tons of details if you’re willing to hunt them down. There really isn’t much to the theming at this quick service! Movie props in the restaurant Inside, you’ll also find a condiment bar along with a self-serve soda machine for easy refills. Serve yourself! But enough about the restaurant — what’s on the menu here?! Menu The menu here is pretty straightforward with American-inspired dishes. There are staples like cheeseburgers, chicken strips, and pulled pork sandwiches, along with some more exciting items like the teriyaki bowl, southwest salad, and Cuban sandwich. Entrees For the drinks, you can find alcoholic beverages like the Rum Island Breed, Frozen Strawberry Daiquiri, Frozen Margarita, and more. They also offer sodas and a Blue Raspberry Frozen Slushy. Alcoholic beverages The kids’ menu offers similar items to the adult menu. You can even get the famous Wookiee Cookie for dessert. Kid’s Meals, Desserts, and Sides And now, onto the main event — the food! Eats First up, we grabbed the Smoked BBQ Pulled Pork Burger, topped with Slow-smoked pulled pork, American cheese, coleslaw, crispy onions, and house-made sweet-and-tangy barbecue sauce, all served with a choice of side for $15.99! The smoked pulled pork burger! This is like having a backyard picnic all in one bite! The pulled pork is good on its own, but we weren’t huge fans of the burger with it. Just the burger The greens underneath reminded us of coleslaw and were a little weird in our opinion. The barbecue, burger, and coleslaw combination is what led us to the backyard taste bud conclusion. While some people might be fans, this wasn’t for us. Inside of the burger Next up, we grabbed the 4-piece Chicken strips for $10.99 with fries as our side. Chicken Strips For those who are curious, you can trade the side of fries for apple slices! These are your traditional Disney World chicken strips, which we adore. These were a bit on the thinner side, but still tasty thanks to the crunchy breading. The inside of the chicken! There are plenty of amazing condiments at this spot to dress these up, but our preferred is the Cheese Sauce for $1! The cheese sauce! This is a cup of liquid gold. You get a huge serving for only $1. It’s warm, savory, saucey, and will forever reign supreme in our book. Toss it on your fries and chicken tenders for the ultimate Disney lunch. A dip! Finally, we grabbed the famous Wookiee Cookie to see if it still holds up. It’s two oatmeal cookies with vanilla cream filling, garnished with a milk chocolate sash on top for $6.99. Think of a bigger version of an oatmeal cream pie! Wookiee Cookie This Chewbacca-inspired treat is so delicious! The cookies are heavy on oatmeal flavor with a bit of a mild, slightly nutty flavor. The icing is nice and fluffy and thankfully not too thick. The chocolate piece is a nice addition, and we’re glad it isn’t super thick. A great snack It’s a solid choice and is thick enough to share! It’s pretty sweet, so be aware before diving in. Drinks To drink, we picked up the Blue Raspberry Slushy for $5.49. The Slush! Honestly, this was pretty mid. It’s one kids will love, but nothing that feels special or unique to this spot. It’s sweet and fruity, but you can get it at several spots around Disney World. There are plenty of other options around the park that are more worth the upgrade than this one. Nosh or Not This Disney World restaurant is a must-visit if… Need a picky-eater-friendly lunch Want easy-to-find seating Are craving a good sweet dessert You should skip this Disney World spot if… Looking for something exciting and unique Want super immersive themeing You want a more relaxing atmosphere Overall Overall, this spot is an easy and convenient spot that will serve up easy dishes that will get you through the day. While they aren’t reinventing the wheel, you can get some theme park classics and a fun dessert at this quick service. 22. A major Walt Disney World attraction is about to close… but NOT for long. Blizzard Beach During the last several years, Disney has operated their two water parks on an alternating basis, meaning that when Typhoon Lagoon was open, Blizzard Beach would be closed, and vice versa. Which in turn made the announcement that when the former reopens from refurbishment, the latter would be closing. However, that’s not the whole story this time… While Blizzard Beach will be closing on May 1st, the park will be REOPENING on May 21s. Furthermore, according to Disney, “both Disney’s Blizzard Beach water park and Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon water park will be open throughout the summer!” Blizzard Beach It makes sense that Disney would have both water parks open during the busy summer season, as this will be the first summer during which the check-in day water park perk is available to Disney World hotel guests. Typhoon Lagoon Since January 1st of this year, Disney World hotel packages have included a complimentary water park admission for guests on their check-in date. Previously, the perk was available for whichever of the two water parks was open on that date. During the summer when both water parks are operational, guests will have their choice between visiting Typhoon Lagoon or Blizzard Beach. Typhoon Lagoon Blizzard Beach is closing on May 1st, however, the park is reopening about three weeks later and will remain open ALONG WITH Typhoon Lagoon through the summer months! 23. We’ve had a chance to visit Epic Universe a few times, and each time, it’s been, well…EPIC. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Ministry of Magic We were simply WOWED by The Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Ministry of Magic, as well as the ride Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry. We’ve also had a chance to check out some of the snacks in that land. Well, we stumbled upon a hideaway bar (and seriously, you might accidentally walk by it) in this version of 1920s Paris, and we had to try it out. So join us as we head inside Bar Moonshine. Like we said, Bar Moonshine is a really small hideaway bar located in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Ministry of Magic. Inside, there’s only enough space for a counter to order… Bar Moonshine …as well as the drinks behind it. It’s small However, the whole 1920s theme is still a vibe here, which is why it has a limited menu, including specialty cocktails like the Fleur 75, Lobe Blaster, Philosopher’s Old Fashioned, Sherbert Lemon, and Gigglewater. A few beers, wine, and whiskey are also available. Menu We ordered the Lobe Blaster for $17.99, which is described as “a potent mix of moonshine, limoncello, absinthe, lemon juice, club soda, and simple syrup garnished with a rosemary sprig and layered with an émulsion verte.” Also, it’s very green, and yes, it really does have absinthe in it. The elixir that goes on top is also a lot of fun. The Lobe Blaster This drink is a lot like a palate cleanser in that it’s minty, lemony, and refreshing. The rosemary is a nice addition to those flavors. It also comes in a charming little stemless plastic cup (that you can keep as a souvenir if you want). Let’s just say that this drink seems to be pretty popular. We saw several people with it, and we had others asking us where it came from. Very refreshing Warning, though. This is a drink you sip, not gulp, because it’s very potent (it contains absinthe). So you’ll want to spend some time with it, maybe having a seat somewhere in the shade or walking around and taking in the whole 1920s Paris vibe. Stay tuned to DFB for more. 24. When it comes to grabbing a quick breakfast around Disney World, you might find that your options can be limited in some parks. Disney’s Hollywood Studios The idea of breakfast being the “most important meal of the day” might be something the cereal lobbies made up, but it’s often a great way to make sure you don’t get hangry on your Disney World trip. Luckily, delicious, cheap, and quick breakfast can be found if you know where to look, so come with us to Hollywood Studios to find it! We stopped by Fairfax Fare at Disney’s Hollywood Studios for some breakfast, where you can get a Mickey Waffle Platter (and a mimosa!) as long as you order before they switch to lunch service. We picked up the Mickey Waffle Platter this time around, which is $9.49 and comes with syrup and a side of bacon. Fairfax Fare It will come as a shock to (probably) no one that these are delicious. They’re Mickey Waffles, so really, what’s not to love? We dream about these things regularly. Waffle platter They’re golden, they’re crispy on the edges, and very soft, chewy, and fluffy on the inside. The batter ratio is just right — they’re not undercooked, and they’re not overcooked to where they’re terribly hard and tough to bite through. It’s a decent amount of food for one person, and if you have smaller kiddos, you might even get away with splitting the waffles between them. Nice and fluffy It’s also a relatively cheap breakfast for what you get compared to other places around Hollywood Studios and the rest of Disney World. If you’re going to pay out of pocket or you’re looking for something pretty inexpensive and easy to take on the go, this is definitely a great choice. The perfect breakfast We’ll be on the lookout for more snacks to review for you around Disney World and beyond! 25. When you book a Disney Cruise, one of the first questions you might have (after “Where’s the soft-serve machine?”) is: “Are the rooms any bigger than what I’d get on another cruise line?” Disney Treasure Stateroom The good news is that in many cases, yes. Disney’s standard staterooms are actually roomier than average, but there are a few caveats you’ll wanna keep in mind before you pack that extra suitcase. Let’s break it down real quick. First off, the numbers: Disney Cruise Line’s standard staterooms clock in at around 205 square feet. That’s about 25% larger than the average standard room on other cruise lines. And that doesn’t even count the rooms with balconies, which give you a little extra breathing room (and somewhere to enjoy your coffee in the morning while pretending you’re royalty sailing into port). Stateroom But let’s be honest — 205 square feet isn’t some sprawling suite. It’s still smaller than your average Value Resort room at Disney World. So no, you’re not gonna walk in and think, Wow, this is so huge, let me do cartwheels! You’re still in a cruise ship cabin. It’s compact, efficient, and very much designed to get the job done — i.e., sleeping, storing your stuff, and maybe catching a Disney movie or two before dozing off. Stateroom That said, Disney does lean a little more into comfort. They’ve got more upscale room categories than some other lines, so if you’re looking to upgrade, you’ve got options. Think concierge-level rooms with extra perks, nicer furnishings, and more space to stretch out. ©Disney Cruise Line But the real focus of a Disney Cruise is the experience. You’re not here to hang out in your stateroom all day. You’ve got character meet-and-greets, Broadway-style shows, pools with waterslides, decent eats (we’re looking at you, rotational dining), and ports to explore. Your room is more like a home base than a full-on destination. Sage and Coriander Still, let’s talk about one thing that does matter a lot when you’re picking a room: location. After you pick the type of room you want, Disney lets you choose your room location — depending on what’s still available when you book. And yes, this is a thing you’ll want to think through. Verandah Stateroom ©DisneyCruiseLine If you’re prone to seasickness or even think you might be, try to book something midship and on a lower deck. These areas tend to feel the ship’s movement less than the ends or higher decks. Also — this might sound wild — but some folks actually prefer the inside staterooms without windows. Why? Because they’re completely dark. If you’re the type who needs blackout conditions to sleep, these rooms can be a dream. (Literally.) Inside Stateroom And let’s talk elevators for a sec. You don’t want to be too close, unless you love the sound of doors dinging and people chatting at all hours. But being too far is a whole different struggle. Disney ships are long, and if your room is way down one of those twisty hallways, it can feel like a full-on hike just to get to breakfast. Long hallways Luckily, Disney thought of that. The hallway carpets are basically secret navigational tools. On older ships, look for stars in the carpet — they point forward if you’re heading toward the front of the ship. On the Disney Wish, Mickey heads do the same job — ears up means you’re heading forward. Stateroom The bottom line is yes, Disney Cruise rooms ARE a bit bigger than average, which is a nice perk. But you’re still working with cruise cabin dimensions — not a full-on suite unless you pay for it. If you’re mainly using the room to crash at night and stash your stuff, the standard stateroom should be just fine. Just make sure you’re smart about where it’s located.
