  2. This week we learned of the passing of legendary actress Lauren Bacall. The award-winning star of stage and screen who rose to fame in the film noir dramas of the 1940s was reportedly one of the femme fatales from Hollywood’s golden age who inspired the creative team behind “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” in their design of Jessica Rabbit. Ms. Bacall visited Disneyland park in the summer of 1963 with her husband, actor Jason Robards, pictured here at Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride. Twenty-six years later, Ms. Bacall was on-hand for the opening festivities of Disney’s Hollywood Studios (known then as Disney-MGM Studios), where she placed her handprints in cement in the courtyard outside The Great Movie Ride – an attraction inspired by the kind of movie magic she, herself, created. 5. Hamjambo! This is a Swahili greeting guests may hear at Disney’s Animal Kingdom as they make their way through Africa to experience the sights, sounds and attractions of the area inspired by the diversity of the country. Another Swahili term is ‘karibuni’ which means welcome. Guests who travel down the Pangani Forest Exploration Trail may be among the first to help welcome the newest member of the gorilla family troop! The Animal Programs team reported that mom, Azizi, has been doing great with her new baby boy. During the first days of an infant’s life, mom needs to learn how to locomote while the infant clings to her body. Nursing and learning how to cling to mom without assistance are among the first essential skills for this little guy. Usually, within the first week, the infant is clinging with all four limbs and mom may return to quadrapedal locomotion. As with any new baby, there is a lot of curiosity about the newest member of the group especially from 4 year old, Lilly. Both Azizi and Gino (silverback/dad) have been disciplining her appropriately if she gets too rambunctious. So far, she has touched him gently on the head. The new baby, which is yet to be named, is the fourth gorilla born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom as part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan, which manages genetic diversity among species through detailed records of individual animals. The first gorilla birth at Disney’s Animal Kingdom occurred in 1997 before the park opened, the second baby arrived in 1999 and the third was born in 2010. 6. The first stop on our brand-new 7-night Southern Caribbean voyages is to St. John’s, Antigua. Part of the West Indies, Antigua is known for its gorgeous beaches, lush rainforest, national parks and cities filled with intriguing historic sites. There’s no shortage of fun in the sun there for your whole family! Here are just a few of the Port Adventures you can enjoy … Amazing Antigua – The perfect mix of history, culture and scenery, this tour takes you to Nelson’s Dockyard, the only working Georgian dockyard in the world, built in 1725. With time to explore the dockyard and its museum, along with an interesting presentation at Dow’s Hill Interpretation Centre, you’ll learn about the island’s history in a fun and interactive way. What’s more, you’ll get great views of the island’s harbors and picturesque villages on your drive and have an opportunity to take photos at the island’s best viewpoint, Shirley Heights Lookout. We offer two departures of this tour – one for families and another just for adults. Antigua Hike And Beach – If you’re seeking a little adventure mixed with relaxation, this tour is for you. First, you’ll join a knowledgeable local guide on a 2-hour hike through the rainforest for a magnificent view of the south coast of Antigua. Then, you can cool off in the Caribbean waters and lounge on the white sand during your relaxing beach break. A similar excursion is Hiking Adventure and Beach, and for those who want more adventure, consider the Kayak, Hike and Snorkel Adventure, which combines kayaking and snorkeling with hiking and beach time. Catamaran And Lobster Lunch Cruise – Another relaxing way to soak up the beauty of Antigua is by sailing around it on the water. This luxury catamaran tour is the perfect way to enjoy the island’s beautiful coastline and the turquoise sea. The boat anchors at two stunning beaches where you can swim in the calm waters and lay out in the sunshine. The life of luxury continues when you’re served lobster and champagne for what’s sure to be a delicious lunch. Next week, I’ll share my suggestions for Port Adventures in St. Lucia, home of the famous Piton volcanic mountains. When the ship’s in port, venture ashore! 7. We recently shared some exciting updates about enhancements coming to Downtown Disney as the area expands and transforms into Disney Springs, which when complete, will double the area’s number of dining and retail options. Work is already underway to widen Buena Vista Drive which will eventually make it easier to access the area. As expansion work continues through 2016, here are some of our best tips for navigating the property during this time so you can continue to enjoy all of the shopping, dining and entertainment options that Downtown Disney has to offer. Use Complimentary Resort Transportation – Disney resorts offer complimentary bus transportation to Downtown Disney, which drops guests off at the Marketplace end. Watercraft transportation is also available from Disney’s Port Orleans Resorts, Disney’s Old Key West Resort and Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort. Once at Downtown Disney, all guests can use boat transportation to travel between the Marketplace, West Side and Pleasure Island districts.Follow Parking Signs For The Best Access – If driving, follow the lighted signs to available parking lots, including those at the Casting and Team Disney buildings located across the street.Take Exit 67 on I-4 – If you’re arriving via I-4, take exit 67 to approach Downtown Disney from another direction and continue to follow signs for parking.Arrive Early For Scheduled Entertainment & Dining Reservations – Have a reservation or tickets to a show? Be sure to allow extra time for parking; we’d suggest arriving at least an hour early. Most ticketed experiences at Downtown Disney take place at Downtown Disney West Side, so parking in the Team Disney parking lot is your best bet for those.Valet Parking Is Available – Based on guest feedback, we now have two locations for interested guests to choose from. Valet Parking is available from 10 a.m.-1 a.m. at the Marketplace (via entrance 2) and from 2:30 p.m.-2:00 a.m. on the West Side (via entrance 3). The cost is $20 per vehicle.Be sure to keep your eye on the Disney Parks Blog for future updates as the Disney Springs transformation continues! Heading to Downtown Disney at Walt Disney World? 8. The next time you’re stepping into the Wild West of Magic Kingdom’s Frontierland, you simply MUST mosey on up to Golden Oak Outpost. Learn About: Golden Oak OutpostMagic Kingdom Disney World RestaurantsNot exactly what you’d expect to hear, I know, seeing as the Outpost typically featured a fairly simple menu of items like Chicken Sandwiches, Chicken Breast Nuggets, and fries made to feed hungry cowpokes who don’t feel like facing the lines at Pecos Bill’s. But not anymore! Golden Oak Outpost just received yet another menu revamp. They’ve introduced not two, not three, but FOUR variations of over-the-top, loaded-up Waffle Fries! We tried them ALL. And one of them is awfully close to the Figaro Fries of yore… Golden Oak Outpost New Golden Oak Outpost Menu So join us on a veritable FRY FEAST, friends! And we’re not going to make you wait to see what the Figaro fuss is about… BLT Waffle FriesWe’re starting with the BLT Waffle Fries. Just like the sandwich it’s named after, you’re looking at bacon, lettuce, and tomato, with the addition of Ranch dressing. BLT Waffle Fries BLT Waffle Fries You can barely spy a fry at first for all that BACON!! And this is the good stuff – nice and crispy. None of that wimpy, soggy bacon here. The ample amount of Ranch dressing oozes nicely over the whole batch, and the lettuce and tomato add variation to the texture. And, yes, as you can now tell, there are indeed waffle fries underneath it all, ready to fulfill their yummy, starchy, potato-y destiny! BLT Waffle Fries underneath toppings BLT Waffle Fry So. ARE these Figaro Fries given a second life?! Not exactly. No cheese here. And, obviously, these are waffle fries as opposed to regular. But it’s as close as we’re gonna get for now, and I — for one — will take it! Brown Gravy and Cheese Waffle FriesNext up: Brown Gravy and Cheese Waffle Fries. Oh, my word… it’s Poutine in Magic Kingdom, y’all! Our Canadian friends can verify whether or not I’m correct on that assessment, since I’ve never had real poutine in real Canada, sadly. But in a nutshell (or on a fry), this batch is topped with brown gravy and white cheddar cheese curds. Brown Gravy and Cheese Fries CURDS!!!! Curd closeup! Gravy. And. Cheese. What more can be said? This is one step up from my beloved Gravy Fries at Everything Pop Food Court. (I still love you, Gravy Fries. You know that, right?) Brown Gravy and Cheese Fry (By the way, all of these Waffle Fries are totally fork-and-knife operations — I just held them to show you at a better angle. Grab those utensils, folks!) Because one of the main ingredients is gravy, this topping variation doesn’t have the mile-high-pile factor that the others do. Don’t let that discourage you. All of that gravy seeps to the bottom of your tray in a pile of cheesy gravy deliciousness. Plus, it’s quite filling. But if you’re looking for the most filling option, you’ll want to turn your attention to these… Barbecue Pork Waffle FriesTopped with barbecue pork and coleslaw, The Barbecue Pork Waffle Fries are highly reminiscent of the Barbecue Slaw Dog found at Casey’s Corner and Fairfax Fare. Pork Barbecue Waffle Fries It’s that mildly spicy-yet-tangy combo that – as it turns out – works every bit as well on a fry as on a hot dog! Pork Barbecue Waffle Fries The portion here is what is most remarkable, though. It’s one of those the-more-you-eat-the-more-seems-to-appear-on-the-plate deals. Pile of pork! Pork Barbeque Waffle Fry Since it is so similar to the Barbecue Slaw Dog, this one was the least intriguing to me; but it is still an impressive snack that could easily serve as a meal. Plus, for those less into the whole meat-topped-meat thing, this could be your chance to try this fun flavor combo. Tex-Mex Waffle FriesLast – but not least – we bring you Tex-Mex Waffle Fries. Toppings here include salsa, “warm cheddar” (plastic cheese!!), and a black bean and cucumber relish. Tex-Mex Waffle Fries And the jalapenos on top didn’t come to play – they delivered a serious kick. At first, I didn’t catch it much. But then the heat built up nice and quick. Jalapenos on top I thought the huge amount of salsa made these a bit too soupy. Tex-Mex Waffle Fries I’d prefer more of that cheese, and less of the salsa. In general, the flavors came together well – especially with the heat from the jalapeno — but this was my least favorite variation from a texture perspective. OverallI liked the BLT and Brown Gravy and Cheese fries the best. But really, this whole menu revamp comes together like the most awesome potato bar ever. Way to step it up, Golden Oak Outpost! I recommend grabbing your traveling companions – along with some forks, knives, and napkins – and hosting an impromptu Waffle Fry Tasting Party in the heart of Frontierland to try to pick your favorite. The choice won’t be easy, believe me! How would you order up your Waffle Fries? Please let us know with a comment! 13. Have you been caught in the forever-line that is lunch at Be Our Guest Restaurant? Learn About: Be Our Guest Restaurant -- LunchMagic Kingdom Disney World RestaurantsThen you’ll love the news we are reporting today! The SUPER popular Magic Kingdom restaurant has instituted a new Standby Policy for guests who show up for lunch without a FastPass+ reservation. We’ve got all of the details right here! Be Our Guest Restaurant Standby Lunch PolicyGuests at Magic Kingdom who would like to dine at Be Our Guest Restaurant in New Fantasyland may be able to skip the crazy long lines going forward — even if they don’t score a FastPass+ reservation. Return Card for Be Our Guest Restaurant Lunch Dining And if you’re thinking this looks a whole lot like the old FastPass system for attractions that used cards, you are on the right track. Basically, if you’d like to eat at Be Our Guest Restaurant for lunch, which continues to be a quick-service affair, head over to New Fantasyland to the entrance of the restaurant. You’ll be greeted by a Cast Member, who will give you a card like the one above. The card will provide a window with a time for your party to return to Be Our Guest. Once the cards are all passed out for the day, signs are set out that no more guests can dine at lunch for the day. And the super awesome news? It means that lines like THIS will hopefully be a thing of the past! Line to get in to Be Our Guest Restaurant for Lunch After all, who wants to spend half their day in Magic Kingdom waiting in a line for lunch?? We were on hand this morning to get all of the details. The Cast Member explained the process to us in terms of “it works like a FastPass”. So be sure that you return during the window of time printed on your ticket. Note that the window is only 15 minutes! If you plan to use the Standby Policy, you’ll want to plan accordingly. It’s also important to note that each member of your party must have a ticket, or they will not be admitted. And since you’re coordinating paper tickets with FastPass+ reservations for attractions, the Cast Members confirm that the time will work for your party before giving you the tickets. In other words, there may be a little wiggle room in choice of time if you get there early enough. Braised Pork, Coq au Vin Style — For Lunch! So, who will this cool new policy benefit the most? Well, since FastPass+ reservations are only available to guests who are staying in Walt Disney World hotels, the standby tickets will be especially helpful for non-resort guests. However, anyone can obtain the tickets on a first come, first served basis. Dinner continues to be a table service offering, so be sure to snag an Advance Dining Reservation if you’d like to eat at Be Our Guest in the evening. As usual, this policy is subject to change. But hooray! We are so happy to see Disney taking steps to eliminate the line craziness for a restaurant that hasn’t slowed down since the day it opened! Are you excited to see this new Lunch Standby Policy at Be Our Guest Restaurant? Leave a comment and tell us what you think! 15. Last month I had the pleasure of introducing our readers to two of our creative cast members, Paul Chase and Matt Stewart, and their Disney Parks version of “light painting.” Paul, a Disney Parks Content Producer, and Matt, a Yellow Shoes Creative Group Art Director, spent an evening in Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World Resort with colored LED penlights. Just like before, Matt “drew” in midair (without a guide or template), while Paul made magic behind the camera using long camera exposures that captured every move of the penlights. There were no chances to “erase” a mistake. In the first Disney Parks Blog post about their unique artwork, I promised a second edition of their work, and here it is. Gallery‘Light Painting’ Once Again Takes Art into Midair Inside Magic Kingdom Park view allIn this edition, Paul and Matt give fairy wings to guests, create a few classic Mickey Mouse drawings, and even head to space (or at least Pizza Planet) with one of the famous aliens from “Toy Story.” And no collection of space art would be complete without the galaxy’s most famous villain, Darth Vader. In fact, one of Lord Vader’s famous lines comes to my mind when I see their work: “Impressive. Most impressive.” (*Note: Matt and Paul were in a very controlled environment with proper personnel on-site. If you attempt an artful creation like this, please insure proper safety measures are taken.) ‘Light Painting’ Once Again Takes Art into Midair Inside Magic Kingdom Park by Gary Buchanan: Originally posted on the Disney Parks Blog View the full article
  16. A record number of Disney villains will be unleashed during a special event at Disney’s Hollywood Studios on August 23. This separately ticketed event will include some awesome entertainment and opportunities for up close encounters with some of the most popular Disney villains. Guests attending the event will also find event merchandise and a variety of food & beverage offerings. Here is a sneak preview at what you can expect. We’ve developed a small assortment of event logo merchandise that includes my all-time favorite villain, Hades (he rules!). Guests should look for both women’s and men’s T-shirts, a limited-release pin and a water bottle. These items will be sold in the Studio Prop Shop located near the Studio Backlot Tour at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. I also learned that the Villainy in the Skies Fireworks Spectacular that night will have some Glow with the Show elements so don’t forget your ear hat. The food & beverage team has also created some incredibly delicious offerings for the party. I love the Disney villain-themed hot dogs, and the Maleficent cupcake sounds amazing – dark chocolate cake filled with a decadent blackberry filling topped with smooth blackberry buttercream (well, well!). At Club Evil in The Hollywood Brown Derby, the Disney chefs will offer an assortment of small plate menu items. These “Villanishious” items include things like “Cruellas Devious Eyes” – fresh mozzarella with ugly ripe tomato spheres, balsamic gelée and basil oil powder – or “The Queen of Hearts famous ‘Off with their heads’”!, which is deviled eggs, pig crackling and a garlic chili gelée and lobster custard with Tobiko caviar and citrus oil. Guest should also look for specialty cocktails at Club Evil and at select bar locations throughout the party. There will also be non-alcoholic option called “Pain and Panic Punch,” which is apple juice, Monin pomegranate, Monin vanilla topped with soda water. After reading the entire menu, I’m ready to party right now! If you are going, I invite you to join the conversation online with the hashtag #VillainsUnleashed. I can’t wait to see photos of the more than 50 Disney villains that night! 17. After a 6 month full renovation, Club 33 has re-opened to members and their guests. The expansion includes a new entrance, a modernized and much larger kitchen, and the gorgeous new Salon Nouveau. Similar, but much more swanky, Salon Nouveau is sort of like Disneyland’s equivalent to 1901; a members only, no reservations needed lounge serving up food, drinks and jazz. We will be posting a full review about Salon Nouveau in the very near future, but for now, let’s take a look at the new Club 33! Club 33 Entrance We gave you an atmosphere look previously, but we’ll cover a few more pics of the interior for you today! AtmosphereThe entrance is now located just steps to the right of the old Club 33 entrance in New Orleans Square. The pretty new doorbell includes an etching of the new logo surrounded by a gold toned art nouveau design. It’s located on the side wall to the left of the door. The New Doorbell When you are buzzed in, there is a small reception area (formally the ornament shop) where you can check in for your meal and do some shopping from one of the two merchandise cases at the club. Notice the bust? She is a piece from the club that was located on the old stairwell. Check In Area & Merchandise Case Once you check in, you’ll take a seat in the Court of Angels until you are escorted up to the restaurant. The staircase leads to the Club’s new main entrance. Court of Angels Lighted Stairway Detail The doors to Club 33 are at the top of the staircase to the right. Main Entrance A very intricate mosaic greets you as you step foot inside. Mosaic Logo Relocated from the old Trophy Room, I was very happy to see this guy when I walked in! Hello ol’ pal! The new lobby is large, open, and airy. Here you’ll find a desk with lovely cast members whose job it is to escort guests from the Court of Angels to the lobby and then to either Salon Nouveau or their dining table. Just look at these friendly faces! Lovely Club 33 Cast Members The inlaid wood floors in the lobby are absolutely amazing. So detailed and intricate, I can’t even imagine how many hours were put into them. The inlaid wood floors include the club’s new logo. The vulture isn’t the only piece that made its way into the new lobby. Lillian Disney’s harpsichord is also there. Lillian Disney’s harpsichord atop the beautiful inlaid wood floors. From the lobby desk, you can either go left and take the wine cellar hallway to Salon Nouveau (more details later). Salon Nouveau Entrance Or you can head right, traveling through the bright new hallway featuring large windows and freshly painted murals to the main dining room. Looking Out to New Orleans Square Club 33 Hallway Mural Club 33 Hallway Mural Once passing through the hallway, you enter the main dining room, now called Le Grand Salon. Other than the complete decor makeover: new chairs, tables, place settings, artwork, flooring, etc., the most noted difference in the room is that the faux fireplace has been replaced with a giant window that looks out towards the Rivers of America. Le Grand Salon The wine service area in the dining room appears to remain untouched. Wine Service Area The place settings include all new dinnerware, silverware & linens. Another new addition to the table are the mini lamps and fleur de lis napkin rings. Table for 4 Place Setting Close Up EatsSo, now that the “tour” is complete, let’s get to the food. Along with the refurb came a new to the club (not new to the Disneyland Resort) executive Chef. Chef Andrew Sutton of Napa Rose and Carthay Circle is now the man in charge of Club 33. Former Chef Marcel St. Pierre is currently leading the entire team at the Disneyland Hotel. This includes his new home base, Steakhouse 55. AND guess what? You can get the famous Chef Marcel Burger there. It’s not on the menu, but go ahead and order it and be surprised!!! I’m keeping my fingers crossed that he adds his signature mac n’ cheese as a secret menu item, too. In fact I’m totally going to try and order it the next time I’m there. It is going to be VERY missed at Club 33. Club 33 now offers either a 5 course menu or a 6 course menu. The difference is that a cheese course has been inserted just before dessert. With the addition of Salon Nouveau, the drink selection has become quite extensive. In addition to the menu below, you can order any other specialty type drink they serve over at the bar. I tried the Orange Lemonade and it was so refreshing. Orange Lemonade AMUSE BOUCHE Dinner started with an Amuse Bouche: Peach Panna Cotta. The bite sized treat had a yogurt-like texture with the flavor of sweet summer peaches. Plus it was served with a tiny spoon! I love tiny spoons, for real. Peach Panna Cotta BREAD SERVICE The bread service has changed significantly at Club 33, there is no longer an assortment of breads, but now a round loaf of Brioche type bread with herbed butter. Both the bread and herbed butter were delicious. Bread Service FIRST COURSE The first course includes 4 options: Sauteed Asparagus, Salmon Carpaccio, Seared Beef, or Lobster Rockefeller. I love asparagus of any type, so I went with it. The asparagus was sauteed with red pepper remoulade and included a little side of asparagus panna cotta. The stalks of asparagus had a very light breading on them that was amazing, and the red pepper remoulade they sat atop was such a great accompaniment. After having the peach panna cotta, I learned that I prefer my panna cotta fruit flavored. Sauteed Asparagus with Asparagus Panna Cotta Other first course choices at our table included the Prime Beef and the Lobster Rockefeller. Prime New York of Beef Seared Black & Blue with Tarragon Roasted Garlic Puree “Lobster Rockefeller” with Crispy Oysters and Hollandaise SECOND COURSE The Second Course also has 4 offerings: Summer Garden Salad, Heirloom Tomato Salad, Watermelon Salad, & Summer Corn Soup. This one was a tough choice for me, they all sounded so great. I went with the Watermelon Salad with Southern Orange Creme Fraiche and Petit Greens. Another very refreshing dish. Watermelon Salad Other choices at our table included the Heirloom Tomato Salad and the Summer Corn Soup. Heirloom Tomato Salad with Crispy Burrata Cheese and Green Tomato Gazpacho. As a side note, I’d like to mention that I chose to opt out of the 3rd course because I wanted two things from the 2nd course. So I also had the Summer Corn Soup. If corn soup or chowder of any type is on a menu, I’m in. This was no exception. The soup was one of the best corn soups I’ve ever had. The broth was sweet and the andouille sausage gave it just a little kick. Summer Corn Broth, Green Tomato Relish, Andouille Sausage and Gulf Shrimp THIRD COURSE There are three options in the third course, all of which are seafood. I really wanted two things from the second course, and I’m not a huge seafood fan, so I skipped this one. Third course options include Iron Seared Fish with Crayfish, Grilled Diver Scallop and Gulf Shrimp, and Butter Poached Lobster with Braised Leeks. While I enjoyed my delicious corn soup, others at my table tried the Iron Seared Fish with Crayfish and Butter Poached Lobster with Braised Leeks. Iron Seared Fish with Crayfish Hoppin’ John and Creole Yellow Tomato Sauce Butter Poached Lobster with Braised Leeks and Minted English Pea Puree PALATE CLEANSING Before the fourth course a cute (and delicious) little scoop of Cucumber Lime Sorbet Topped with an Edible Flower is brought out. Again, the tiny spoons! Cucumber Lime Sorbet with Edible Flower Fourth Course There are 4 options in the fourth dining course: Sassafras Dusted Duck Breast, Vegetarian Layered Ratatouille, Creole Mustard Crusted Rack of Lamb, and a Petit Angus Filet Mignon. Yes, unfortunately the famous Club 33 Chateaubriand is no longer. All 4th course entrees are brought out to your table at the same time and presented to each guest under a silver dome. The lids are lifted simultaneously for a fun little “voila” moment. What’s behind dome #1??? It’s Vegetarian Layered Ratatouille with Red Quinoa, Black Eyed Peas and Tomato Coulis! I wanted to try something “new to me” so I went the vegetarian route. I really didn’t know what I was getting myself into, as I’d never tried Ratatouille before, but I was presently surprised when my meal was revealed. The plating of it was gorgeous and it tasted amazing too. Wrapped in a neat little package of zucchini, the quinoa and black eyed peas made up the center of the dish. Vegetarian Layered Ratatouille with Red Quinoa , Black Eyed Peas and Tomato Coulis Other 4th course meals at our table included the Petit Angus Filet and the Rack of Lamb. I loved the plating of the 4th courses. Just look at this stack of half-moon scalloped potatoes and the perfect row of pesto dots. Petit Angus Filet Mignon with Tasso Ham, Scalloped Potatoes, & Collard Green Pesto Creole Mustard Crusted Rack of Lamb with Summer Corn Succotash (sorry for the blur!) DESSERT COURSE Next Up would be the Cheese Course which is described as a “Diligently selected trio of Artisanal Cheeses with Orange Blossom Honey Comb.” Next time I may go for the cheese, I really love a good cheese plate, especially when honey comb is involved. But, sadly, no one at our table went for the 6 Course menu, so let’s skip to the grand finale; DESSERT! It’s never easy to choose a dessert, especially when they all sound incredible. The four options on the Club 33 dinner menu include the Chocolate Hazelnut Gianduja Decadent with Warm Chocolate Ganache and Passion Fruit, Warm Monkey Bread with Old Fashioned Vanilla Ice Cream & Candied Pecan Praline, Vanilla Mascarpone Velvet with Summer Peaches and Lemon Balm Peach Nectar, and Vanilla Creme Brulee with Apricot Conserve and Cognac Flambe. When I was little my dad used to make us Monkey Bread on the weekends. I hadn’t eaten it since I was a kid, so even though I really wanted to try the creme brulee, I went for the nostalgia of the Monkey Bread. I’d describe this dessert as a comfort food treat. The little cylinder of monkey bread was nice and warm and the vanilla ice cream paired perfectly with it. The Candied Pecan Praline was just an added bonus! Warm Monkey Bread with Old Fashioned Vanilla Ice Cream and Candied Pecan Praline Other dessert choices at our table included the Chocolate Hazelnut Gianduja Decadent with Warm Chocolate Ganache and Passion Fruit. This dessert was gorgeous. Topped with a layer of chocolate printed with the new Club 33 logo, the dessert was almost like a mousse type lava cake. The warm ganache was poured table side into the center of the dessert causing it to melt the layer of chocolate on top and sink in the center of the mousse. Really a lovely looking dish. Chocolate Hazelnut Gianduja Decadent with Warm Chocolate Ganache and Passion Fruit The biggest dessert hit was by far the table side presentation of the Creme Brulee. Because who doesn’t get excited by flaming food!?! Table Side Creme Brulee Presentation Vanilla Creme Brulee with Apricot Conserve and Cognac Flambe KIDS MENU The Club 33 Kids Menu has also gotten an overhaul. Instead of a leather book type menu, it’s now a standard disposable paper menu similar to the ones you see throughout the resort, minus the games and crayons. The artwork on the cover features Ray from The Princess and the frog and is absolutely adorable. Kids Menu Cover Kids Menu The Kids Menu consists of three courses. My boys chose the same menu items, so I don’t have a wide variety of photos to share here. For the first course they both had the Peach Yogurt Parfait layered with Fresh Berries. If it were me, I would have chosen the Farm House Tomato Soup with Mini Grilled Cheese Sandwich! Kids Peach Yogurt Parfait Layered with Fresh Berries For the second course they went with the Petit Filet of Beef with Sauteed Green Beans, Rice Pilaf & Fruit Skewer. They aren’t big Rice Pilaf fans, so they were able to sub for French Fries, which by the way were amazing. Some of the best fries I’ve ever had… Somehow the fruit skewer didn’t make it on to the plate for a photo, oops. Petit Filet Minus Rice Pilaf & Fruit Skewer Plus French Fries! For dessert, one of my boys went for the French Beignets with a Trio of Dipping Sauces: Chocolate, Caramel and Vanilla. Unfortunately he dug into them before I could get a photo, even though he knows the “PHOTO FIRST” rules!!! Anyhow, they were not like the big puffy beignets we are used to over at the Mint Julep Bar, these were more like donut holes. Still tasty, but sort of a let down… My youngest just went with a bowl of Vanilla Ice Cream and Fresh Berries. I really wanted him to get the “Cookies and Cream” Traditional Mickey Cookie with Strawberry Ice Cream, but he’s not a big strawberry fan and wanted something kind of plain. It was not a problem at all to order something that was “off” the menu. Vanilla Ice Cream with Fresh Berries OVERALL The food at the newly renovated Club 33 was fantastic, the service was impeccable and the atmosphere is gorgeous. I will definitely miss some of the old menu items, especially the mac & cheese and the chicken dish as well. It’s sad to see some of the physical changes to the Club, but I also understand that a renovation was needed to comply with building codes, efficiency & modernization of the kitchen, etc. AND, for those of you wondering… I did inquire about the “thrones” in the ladies room. Unfortunately they are no longer. Although it’s upsetting that they are gone, there’s good hygienic reasoning to go along with their demise. Since this is a food blog, I will spare you the details! What would you order at the new Club 33? Let us know in the comments below. 21. Howdy pardners, High Roller Harker here! As you probably saw from the recent “Legends of Frontierland: Gold Rush!” video, featuring Eagle Eye Erin and Two Bit Tyler, there is a feud happening out here in the wild west, between the citizens of Frontierland and Rainbow Ridge. The Frontierland folk don’t take kindly to those Rainbow Ridgers trying to take their land. If you’re going to join the story before “Legends of Frontierland: Gold Rush!” ends its test run on September 1, here are a few essentials you can pick up to help you fit in and stand out from the rest. Cowboy Hats – This handy wear will not only keep you cool, but it will make you look cool, too. It’s a must for any town folk ‘round these parts.Mustaches & Bandanas – These doo-dads work well as a disguise or to show off your town colors with pride.Money Pouches – These simple pouches are great for holding and collecting bits, gold and bonds. Now ladies, just because you are on the wild frontier doesn’t mean you can’t still look good. Glam it up with feathers and choose a boa, headband or fan, and if that’s not enough, add a velvet necklace for a little somethin’ extra. As you can see from the picture above, I couldn’t resist. 22. Why is it that the things that scare us the most are often the experiences we are drawn to again and again? I hate creepy crawlies, but when asked if I want to hold something like a giant tarantula … I always say yes! Or, when presented with the opportunity to drop 13 stories when you are really afraid of heights … you buckle up, close your eyes, and hope that you don’t embarrass yourself in front of a group of fellow thrill seekers. Better yet, how many times have you wished to have those scary (but exhilarating) moments captured on video? The look, the screams, the panic and ultimately the relief on our faces when the moment is over – what if you could relive that experience over and over again with video? How cool would that be? Well, guess what? Disney PhotoPass Service has introduced some awesome new technology, which will enable guests with a MagicBand and an active Memory Maker entitlement who ride The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror to receive a video memento of their 13-story drop! The video is automatically associated to your My Disney Experience account, and any linked Family & Friends and Managed guests on your account will also be able to view and share the video. Check it out! So, get ready for a whole new level of memorable thrills if you have a MagicBand and Memory Maker! And if you are that guy, or that girl, who screams like a banshee on this attraction, we’ll let you relive that magical memory again, and again, and again. 24. As we’ve shared previously on Disney Parks Blog, a record number of Disney villains – more than 50 in all – are about to descend upon Disney’s Hollywood Studios for “Villains Unleashed,” a new separately ticketed event happening August 23, 2014. Among the baddies expected to attend are popular Disney antagonists like Hades, Cruella De Vil, Captain Hook, and Maleficent, along with more rarely seen villains such as Dr. Hämsterviel, Shan Yu, Hector Barbossa, and Bowler Hat Guy. This just in! We’ve learned that none other than “Number One Criminal” and “World’s Most Dangerous Frog,” Constantine, will also be showing up for “Villains Unleashed”! Constantine, last seen plotting the robbery of the century in Disney’s “Muppets Most Wanted,” bears a striking resemblance to Kermit the Frog. This evil doppelganger is often up to no good, although according to him, “It’s not easy being mean.” Constantine will be appearing exclusively during “Villains Unleashed,” August 23 at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Look for him during the event, inside the Stage One Company Store location near Muppet*Vision 3D. Of course, you can also see him in “Muppets Most Wanted,” now available on Blu-rayâ„¢ Combo Pack and Digital HD. “Villains Unleashed” is shaping up to be one hot ticket! Admission to this special event is $67 plus tax ($62 plus tax for children 3-9). Tickets are limited, so get yours before they’re gone! 25. I’m excited to announce that two Disney Parks attraction poster shirts will be released online from August 18-24. These new shirts feature nods to some classic Disney Park icons – the Matterhorn Bobsleds at Disneyland park and the Walt Disney World Monorail System in Florida. Disney Design Group artist Richard Terpstra created the artwork for these shirts that will be printed on Hanes Beefy tees. The original Matterhorn Bobsleds poster that Richard referenced when designing the shirt was created by Paul Hartley in 1959, the year the attraction opened in California. According to the “Poster Art of the Disney Parks” book by Walt Disney Imagineers Vanessa Hunt and Danny Handke, the artist who created the original monorail artwork is unknown. During a trip to California last year, Vanessa showed me that original monorail artwork in its various stages of completion (I even saw the pencil lines, which was a total Disney geek moment!). Like many guests, I have fond memories of both the Matterhorn Bobsleds attraction and the Walt Disney World Monorail. My son’s first ride at Disneyland park a few years ago was the Matterhorn Bobsleds. We visited Disneyland park again last September where he posed next to the attraction poster while wearing some dapper attire. As for the Walt Disney World Monorail, I love watching it zip through Disney’s Contemporary Resort. I took the image shown above of monorails passing in the night while that gorgeous mural by Mary Blair looms in the background. You can order these shirts starting August 18 by visiting http://www.DisneyStore.com/ParkEvents. I also heard a practically perfect T-shirt will be offered on that same website from August 27-31 (it’s a must-have!). Do you have a favorite memory of the Matterhorn Bobsleds or the monorail?
