  2. We are back with another look at some of the Marketplace Booths that will be featured at the 2014 Epcot Food and Wine Festival! Today, we are visiting two more of our favorite spots — one Old World, and one New! Both the Belgium Booth and the Brazil Booth epitomize one of this year’s biggest themes. We can’t wait to Taste Our Way Around the World with lots of returning favorites, and some new flavors as well. Let’s take a look at what these two Marketplaces will be offering guests in 2014, starting September 19th. Belgium Marketplace BoothThe Belgium Marketplace Booth offers Food and Wine Festival guests the best of both worlds. We love the interesting food options here. But it’s also a primo stop on your Brews Around the World Tour as well! Belgium Marketplace Booth The Belgium Booth first debuted at the festival in 2010, and has become a mainstay since then. After all, who can resist indulging in a sweet or savory Belgian Waffle? 2014 Epcot Food and Wine Festival Belgium Booth MenuPotato and Leek Waffle with Beer-Braised BeefBelgium Waffle with Warm Chocolate Ganache and Whipped CreamBelgium Waffle with Berry Compote and Whipped CreamHoegaardenStella ArtoisLeffe BlondeStella Artois CidreChilled Coffee featuring Godiva Chocolate LiqueurBeer flight (featuring 4 4-ounce servings): Hoegaarden, Stella Artois, Leffe Blonde and Stella Artois CidreThere are many returning favorites here this year, but we’re happy to say that we see some fun additions as well. The Potato and Leek Waffle was one of our Best of the Fest Favorites in 2013, so I’m thrilled that it’s returning! This year, the flavors are amped up a bit as the Beef topping the savory waffle is braised in Beer! Potato and Leek Waffle with Braised Beef After such a hearty dish, we definitely recommend that you give one of the dessert waffles a try. You can’t go wrong with Belgian Waffle topped with Warm Chocolate Ganache and Whipped Cream. Belgian Waffle with Warm Chocolate Ganache and Whipped Cream But if you’d rather have a fruit topping, no worries. Try the Belgian Waffle with Berry Compote and Whipped Cream instead. Belgian Waffle with Berry Compote and Whipped Cream If you prefer a dessert that you can drink, you’ll be happy to know that the Chilled Coffee featuring Godiva Chocolate Liqueur is also returning. Chilled Coffee featuring Godiva Chocolate Liqueur The Belgium Booth also provides lots of options for the beer lover in your party. Choose from a single option, or try a Beer Flight for variety. In 2014, the Booth will feature a mix of returning and new flavors. Replacing the featured Scallop dish from last year, Moqueca de Pescado is a traditional Brazilian Fish Stew with Coconut Sauce. This version has a local twist, featuring sustainably-farmed Regal Springs Tilapia. It will be served over Rice. Moqueca de Pescado: Regal Springs Premium Tilapia with Coconut Lime Sauce and Steamed Rice Making its return is one of the Festival’s favorite dishes from last year, the Crispy Pork Belly. We can’t wait to have this one again! Crispy Pork Belly with Black Beans, Onions, and Cilantro We expect that Pao de Queijo, or Brazilian Cheese Bread, will be popular with guests. How can you miss with cheese?! Pao de Queijo — Brazilian Cheese Bread And Kaiser Brewery Xingu Black Beer returns as well! Much lighter bodied than you might expect, this dark beer pairs beautifully with the pork belly dish. Kaiser Brewery Xingu Black Beer Hooray! One of our favorite Festival cocktails, the Frozen Caipirinha, also returns! Frozen Caipirinha Carnaval Moscato is a great dessert wine, and a surprising find! We think it will be a nice pairing with the Cocada, a Brazilian Coconut Candy that’s debuting this year. Carnaval Moscato With just over a month to go until the Festival kicks off, we are counting the days — hours?! — until we can try all of our favorite bites and sips! 3. Have you ever found yourself in this scenario: sitting in the Hollywood Hills Amphitheater, waiting for Fantasmic! – the nighttime spectacular at Disney’s Hollywood Studios — to begin? Amphitheater seating waiting for Fantasmic! If you are planning to see Fantasmic! (the official show title has an explanation point in the name, which moving forward I’ll omit for your ease of reading , you should know that it’s best to arrive well before show time, especially if you are attending the first show of the evening. So, what should you do in the meantime? Aside form join in The Wave, of course… which you can — and should — do. Here comes The Wave!! But when you’re not Wave-ing, you might as well eat! Fortunately, there are oodles of opportunities around the amphitheater to do just that. Prior to moving directly into the amphitheater, there are a couple of stands serving up snacks such as Mickey ice cream bars, roasted nuts, frozen lemonade cups, churros, Mickey pretzels, and the like. Snack kiosks outside of amphitheater Cast Members also wander the outside and inside of the amphitheater right up until show time, carrying items like popcorn and cotton candy, which somehow adds to the festive vibe. Popcorn Cotton Candy Once you head into the amphitheater, there are two large concession stands in the back, both by the name of Hollywood Hills Amphitheater Refreshment. They have the same menu, so you can just head to the one closest to where you are seated. Hollywood Hills Amphitheater Refreshments Hollywood Hills Amphitheater Refreshments You’ll find an extended menu from what you’ll see in the outer snacks stands, and on this visit, my husband and I decided to try something we hadn’t previously: the Bread Cones, which come in your choice of Fiesta Chili-Cheese or Macaroni and Cheese. Concessions Menu Bread Cone dishes have been a huge hit in Disneyland ever since they made their debut in Cars Land at Cozy Cone Motel. But the Bread Cones at Fantasmic are noteworthy because this is the only place you can find them at Disney World currently. Previously you could grab them at Min & Bill’s Dockside Diner and Marketplace Snacks (a snack kiosk in Downtown Disney), but that’s no longer the case. Ever since I realized they have them here, I’ve had my eye on the Macaroni and Cheese Bread Cone. Macaroni and Cheese Bread Cone It’s presented to you in a medium-size drink cup, and this really helps it feel more secure when you’re weaving through a lot of people back to your seat. It’s also helpful since typically each party designates a “snack runner” while someone else holds the bench . The “with chips” mentioned on the menu are a bag of Lay’s Potato Chips. Macaroni and Cheese Bread Cone and Chips When I removed the cone from its cup, I was really surprised by the portion. I don’t know if it comes across in the picture, but this thing is pretty huge! Macaroni and Cheese Bread Cone I should mention that the Cast Member checked to be sure I wanted bacon on it when I placed my order. If I recall correctly, my answer was, “Yes, please. Woo!” (I’m not kidding. Sometimes I lose all sense of decorum when it comes to bacon.) Bacon on the top. Woo! The cone was full-to-overflowing with all sorts of Disney mac-and-cheese goodness. Perfectly ooey, gooey, and cheesy, and that bacon pile from the top dispersed well throughout. Macaroni and Cheese Several bites in Loved. It. My husband chose the Fiesta Chili-Cheese Bread Cone. Fiesta Chili-Cheese Bread Cone He thought the chili was full of flavor flavor and enjoyed the mild spice, and really liked the addition of the jalapenos on top even more than he thought he would. Fiesta Chili-Cheese Bread Cone The chili isn’t just meat – you can spy and taste the beans and corn in there. And, of course, it’s all topped with melting cheese. Chili inside the cone Chili inside the cone While I loved my Mac and Cheese, we both thought the bread itself paired more naturally with the chili. As he tore through it, it was terrific when dipped into the chili, like a chip. Regarding both dishes, the cones were exactly the same – the bread was soft and pliable, while still being sturdy and thick enough to hold everything inside without worry of food or sauce leakage. “Inside” the bread cone We held one up from the bottom so you could check it out. Bread Cone Also, both bread cone dishes were seriously hearty. I didn’t walk into Fantasmic expecting a stick-to-your-ribs meal, but that’s what I ended up with. My husband made a good point, though: while we were both surprised at how much we enjoyed our bread cones, he labeled them as “somewhat climate inappropriate” for an August evening. Basically, you’re downing chili or hot mac while evening temps can still hover in the 80s. But he also shared that he would absolutely get this again on any one of those picture-perfect nights during the cooler months. Once we finished snapping pictures, it was time to bring what we had left to enjoy in the amphitheater while we waited for the show to begin. I learned something on the evening of our visit: I’m not talented at pyrotechnic photography ;). But I’d still like to try to bring a little “Fantasmic” to your day (I! LOVE! THIS! SHOW!), so here are a few of my attempts. If you’ve never seen Fantasmic and don’t want to know anything before you see it with your own eyes, you should stop scrolling now . Fantasmic! Fantasmic! Fantasmic! My very favorite part is when the boat with about 9 million of our closest Disney pals appears as if from nowhere, captained by Steamboat Willie himself! Fantasmic! Boat Fantasmic! 4. This Labor Day weekend, more than 700 athletes and coaches representing nine states, 5 countries from as far away as Japan, will hit the diamonds at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort for Disney Turn Back the Clock Weekend. For the 18th straight year, teams will enjoy international competition on the field and fun off the field in the parks, and at a private water park party at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park. For teams like the Cambridge Hitmen, planning the “Road to Disney” started months ago. Team manager Ronnie Ferrara has led teams from Boston to the tournament for the past 14 years. “We have a lot of fun down there,” said Ferrara. “The Disney difference, they are wonderful down there, they treat everyone first class from the day you get there, they go over board trying to help. The fields are unbelievable.” For the kids, it’s an opportunity to experience good competition and enjoy time with friends and teammates. “What’s great about the baseball is how good the competition is,” said catcher Samuel Olivet, who is making his second trip to the tournament. Rookie pitcher Elliot Harris said, “it seems like a vacation with one of my favorite things to do, which is play baseball.” Recently, we caught up with the Hitmen on their home field in Cambridge, MA, as they practiced for their trip of a lifetime. 6. Over the weekend, Disney’s Hollywood Studios played host to Villains Unleashed, a special event in which 50 Disney villains (and many Disney fans) packed the park for some nighttime fun and special entertainment. GalleryVillains at Disney’s Hollywood Studios Villains Unleashed view allThe event kicked off at Hades Hangout, where several Disney villains were welcomed to the stage – including Shan Yu, Bowler Hat Guy, Captain Gantu, Oogie Boogie and many others. One fan favorite was Dr. Hämsterviel, who made his debut appearance at Walt Disney World Resort during this event! Speaking of cool characters, Disney Junior – Live On Stage was temporarily taken over by Star Lord and Gamora from “Guardians of the Galaxy” for an out-of-this-world dance party. GalleryGuests at Disney’s Hollywood Studios Villains Unleashed view allMany guests also dressed up to show their “villain” side for the occasion. Some of the amazing costumes I saw that night included Bomb Voyage from “The Incredibles” and Stinky Pete from “Toy Story 2,” among others. (Be sure to click through the gallery above to see more). In addition to meeting villain characters, guests also enjoyed special entertainment, including “Oogie Boogie’s Variety Show” and a Star Wars villain zone. The evening ended with a spectacular appearance by Maleficent, who kicked off the night’s “Villainy In The Skies” fireworks spectacular. Be sure to check out the video above for more! 8. One of our favorite spots in all of Disneyland is Jolly Holiday Bakery. We never get tired of looking through their pastry cases for something new to delight us! And right now, they’re stepping up their game with some new, limited-time offerings. Limited Time Offerings at Jolly Holiday BakeryJolly Holiday obviously has a Mary Poppins theme, and this adorable Spoonful of Sugar offers a lot of flavor AND visual interest in one bite! The treat includes pâte à choux, chocolate caramel ganache, sprinkles, chocolate pastry cream, dark chocolate, white chocolate, a tiny penguin made from sugar, and marshmallows! Whew! That’s a LOT of detail! Spoonful of Sugar If you love the looks of this little guy, you better get to Disneyland quick — he’s only available August 22-31! But there are several other pastries and desserts making a limited time appearance at Jolly Holiday Bakery. Look for these to stick around into September. Get a load of this gorgeous Red Velvet Whoopie Pie! Red Velvet Whoopie Pie Recently, our Dining in Disneyland columnist Heather Sievers showed us some of the other delicious new treats that are available now through September at Jolly Holiday. We fell in love with the Mickey-Shaped French Macarons. The Passionfruit Macaron is sweet with more sweet, but we love the sparkly embellishment on top. Passionfruit French Macaroon We much preferred the Raspberry Rose version with its balance of sweet and tart. Raspberry French Macaroon Moist and flavorful, we also gave the Pineapple Bundt Cake a thumbs up! Pineapple Bundt Cake And the Blueberry Cheesecake embodies all the fresh flavor of Summer. 12. Well, adventurers, the end of Adventure Trading Company’s limited-time engagement at Disneyland park has come. Reports indicate that the expedition outfitter ran out of supplies yesterday, and they are now in the process of packing up for the journey out of the jungle. But word in the trees is that Adventure Trading Company has one more surprise in store as it bids farewell to the brave, funny, friendly and cunning explorers of Adventureland. On Friday, Aug. 29 – their last day in Adventureland – Adventure Trading Company will be collecting the stories of the local Juju Traders with story packets, available for sale at Indiana Jones Outpost. Inside each story packet is a Story Tag, which adventurers can use to record their greatest Juju tales. They will then report to Aladdin’s Oasis, where Adventure Trading Company representatives and local historians will be on hand to collect their stories and thank the “head storytellers” of Adventureland with a special mystery Juju. As the day continues, all Story Tags will be collected and displayed on Story Lines inside Aladdin’s Oasis for all your fellow explorers to see. Come prepared to tell your story of courage, friendship, humor … anything that your expeditions have inspired in you! Remember, supplies are extremely limited and will only be available for this one day. Come join us one last time and bid farewell to Adventure Trading Company at Disneyland park! 14. There’s nothing more memorable than a really good catchphrase. For myself, and the 37 other travelers on my Adventures by Disney journey through Norway, there’s one phrase that sprung from our lips daily – “Let’s go fjording!” And go fjording we did. While technically not considered a word in English (or any other language), “fjording” can loosely be defined as: the act of embarking upon adventure while beholding the beauty of the Norwegian fjords. A fjord is a long, narrow arm of the sea bordered by steep cliffs that is usually formed by glacial erosion. But, since a picture is worth a thousand words, ta da! This is the Geirangerfjord area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is one of the many fjords visited on this adventure. We hiked the fjords in Flam (and I was photobombed by this sheep along the way). We set off in a speedboat on a fjord safari through another UNESCO World Heritage Site, Naeroyfjord (and sported some colorful, albeit effectively windproof, neon yellow “fjording” gear). We slept in rooms with spectacular fjord overlooks, and even used public restrooms that boasted some magnificent sights (a loo with a view). It really brought a whole new meaning to the phrase “when nature calls.” Above all, we took some time to simply enjoy the incredible beauty the Norwegian fjords provided (and they made for a great selfie). Clearly you can see why Oxford and Merriam-Webster need to add the term “fjording” to next year’s dictionaries! In addition to fjording, an Adventure by Disney trip to Norway offers even more of the great outdoors. In my next post, I’ll tell you all about rafting, farming, glacier(ing) and more. 15. Happy NATIONAL MOJITO DAY, EVERYONE!! OK, I’ll be honest. We’d PLANNED to share this post with you on the ACTUAL National Mojito Day, but a big news item came up and we had to bump it. So this is our STAND-IN National Mojito Day. I hope that works for you. Learn About: La Cantina de San AngelEpcot Restaurants Disney World RestaurantsStill, crazy how time flies, isn’t it? I remember last Mojito Day like it was yesterday! It feels like I was just putting up my Mojito Tree, baking mojito cookies and singing all my favorite mojito carols… Oh, wait, was that just me? Anyway, on this day as we gather with family and friends to celebrate Mojitos all around the world ;), we thought we’d show you a mojito in Epcot’s Mexico Pavilion that has more than a bit of a twist… the Pomegranate Lime Frozen Mojito found at La Cantina de San Angel. La Cantina Sign La Cantina Drink Menu The drink serving is huge – it fills every inch of the glass and beyond, as you can see. (At $11.50, I should hope so.) As a bonus, it’s also looks terrific! Frozen Pomegranate Lime Mojito A traditional Mojito is a mix of fresh mint, lime, club soda, sugar, and white rum on the rocks. The Pomegranate Lime Frozen Mojito has… well, it’s got lime . And pomegranate! Tequila – as opposed to rum – is the featured liquor here, and I can’t say I picked up one hint of mint. What I did pick up on was a refreshing blast of cold, fruity sweetness nicely balanced by the tart lime. Pomegranate Lime Frozen Mojito For all my joking about Mojito Day traditions, I’m actually not a huge mojito fan myself, so this version is far more up my alley. You know what goes well with a tart-and-sweet beverage like this? Something salty. Better yet, something salty and cheesy… I paired mine with the Empanada de Queso (cheese empanadas). La Catina Entrees I mean, it’s melted cheese in fried dough… what more could you want? Cheese Empanadas at La Cantina de San Angel As the menu mentions, the empanadas are topped with green sauce, queso, and Mexican cream. While the description makes it sound like it will be swimming in sauce, it’s really just a touch to add a nice bit of extra flavor. Inside Cheese Empanadas I also got a side of refried beans. If you haven’t had the refried beans at La Cantina, they’re a little different from what you might expect, since they are refried black beans. I used the beans as a dip for my chips. But the serving remained largely untouched since the portion was huge, especially when served with an already rich entrée. Beans All in all, my meal was a nice mix of traditional cuisine and something unique and unexpected — a combo you can really aim for in any World Showcase Pavilion. Until next time, adios from the Mexico Pavilion! Oh, and a Happy (belated) National Mojito Day to you and yours ! 16. One of the best ways to spend the day at Disneyland park is enjoying the sights and sounds of the various atmosphere entertainment. Whether it be starting your morning on Main Street, U.S.A., listening to the Disneyland Band, or taking an afternoon break to the jazzy sounds of the Royal Street Bachelors in New Orleans Square, these are some of the moments that make Disneyland one of my favorite places in the world. Today, the “Disneyland Resort Viewing Tips” series continues with a look at some of the performances that come to life everyday throughout the park. Dapper Dans – One of the most iconic Disneyland park entertainment offerings is the barbershop quartet known as the Dapper Dans. Did you know that the term “dapper dan” is a turn-of-the century phrase referring to a well-dressed gentleman? Fitting in with the time period of Main Street, U.S.A., the Dans of Disneyland feature a terrific four-part harmony that can be heard at various times throughout the morning and afternoon. If you haven’t had a chance, don’t miss their patriotic tribute during the flag retreat ceremony in Town Square. Looking for some Dapper Dans charm today? Enjoy the video below of these well-dressed gentlemen teaching you how to ride a bicycle built for four. Royal Street Bachelors – This talented jazz trio has been performing in New Orleans Square since it opened in 1966. Today, they have an outdoor stage at French Market Restaurant, where they begin their sets around lunch time and play about every hour into the early evening. If you swing by around lunch time, you may find me and fellow Disney Parks Blog author Erin Glover enjoying a meal – it’s one of our favorite restaurants in Disneyland park! Pearly Band – If you are a “Mary Poppins” fan like me, you won’t want to miss the Pearly Band performing in the afternoon throughout Fantasyland. Inspired by the tradition of London’s pearly kings and queens, the Pearly Band’s outfits are decorated with large, mother-of-pearl buttons. Depending on the wind, some of their supercalifragilisticexpialidocious performances may feature Mary Poppins and Bert as well! My other favorites include the traditional Disneyland Band, the misfit gang of pirates that go by the name of The Bootstrappers in New Orleans Square, and Hook & Ladder Co., who perform outside the Main Street Fire Station! Tell us your favorite atmosphere entertainment at Disneyland park in the comments below. Be sure to check the Entertainment times guide when you arrive to confirm performance times and locations. 21. Both of my children returned to school in mid-August. Like many parents during this time of the year, I recently went shopping for their school supplies. Granted, the supplies needed for my college-age daughter are much different than the ones for my grade-school-age son. The idea of supply shopping, however, got me thinking about how to kids could show their Disney Side when returning to classes this fall. Luckily, I spotted a nice display in the Emporium at Magic Kingdom Park in Walt Disney World Resort that offered a few ideas. Located just inside the location, the small back-to-school display contained a handful of items including pencils, pens, supply boxes, and more. There were also a few backpacks that we offer at Disney Parks. I wish I had that Buzz Lightyear backpack growing up! After seeing the display, I spoke with the souvenirs team at Disney Theme Park Merchandise headquarters. They gave me a closer look at the newest erasers to arrive at Disney Parks. The mystery collector packs were inspired by other collectible merchandise such as Disney pins and Vinylmation. Each pack contains one eraser from a series of themed erasers with characters like Mickey Mouse and friends; Disney princesses; and characters from Disney Channel’s “Phineas and Ferb.” Some of the designs are shown on the packaging with one eraser design remaining a mystery in each series. The team also created new, foot-long erasers that have a colorful hidden Mickey Mouse icon in the designs. Finally, I love the new character erasers which stand about 4-inches tall. These incredibly detailed erasers are probably more decorative in nature; I wanted to display them on my Disney shelf in my office. Look for these items in select locations at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resorts. I want to wish all teachers, faculty and students an exciting and productive school year! 24. We finally got to head over and try the new menu at Le Cellier Steakhouse! Learn About: Le Cellier SteakhouseEpcot Restaurants Disney World RestaurantsYep, you heard me right. A new menu. And while the menu changes up regularly here now that it’s a Signature-restaurant-all-the-time-forever-always, we weren’t expecting the news that the beloved filet with mushroom risotto and truffle butter sauce was getting a makeover. As soon as we found that out, we had to make an ADR. And, yep — we ordered the replacement. Along with a lot of other goodies. Let’s go see how it all turned out! AtmosphereBecause we had a busy day and the lunch and dinner menu are now the same, we decided to opt for a lunch advance dining reservation. Le Cellier Steakhouse — Outside View When we arrived, we only had to wait for a bit before we were shown to our table. The very slight delay gave us a chance to check out once more the addition of several paintings by The Group of Seven, which were recently installed to honor this important Canadian school of painters. Description of Lobby Paintings The seating in this tiny waiting area is of the outdoor bench type, which makes it not all that comfortable. But, honestly, most of the waiting area seating is usually taken up whenever I get there. Seating and Paintings in the Lobby Nameplates beneath each painting give you more information. If you have a few moments, be sure to check them out. They really are beautiful. Lobby Decor — Up Close As you’re shown to your table, you’ll wave goodbye to sunlight for a little while. Le Cellier really is, well, in a cellar. Le Cellier Entryway And you get a sense of that as soon as you turn the corner into the restaurant. The feeling is at once warm and cozy, yet elegant. Le Cellier Dining Room The rich detail lends itself to the feeling that you’ve stepped into the wine cellar of a grand chateau. Beamed ceilings and stone arches fit right in! Le Cellier Ceilings and Chandeliers The room seems to be lit primarily by candles. These are electric, of course. But they lend a soft light to your surroundings. Bad for reading your menu and photographing your food, but good for setting the right tone. Wall Sconces En route to your table, you’ll also see the wine cave, decorated appropriately with maple leaves. Wine Cave One thing that is always a little surprising to first time guests: this is a tiny dining room. With the combination of the restaurant’s popularity and the small footprint of the seating area, it’s not surprising that ADRs are tough to come by. Seating While seating is comfortable, tables are situated very close together in some spots. We prefer the tables in the middle of the floor, which are set a little further apart. Seating Beneath the Mullioned Windows We have plenty of new things to show you, so let’s get to the food! EatsWith its elevation to Signature Dining status (which means you’ll spend two Disney Dining Plan credits per person for a meal), Le Cellier makes a consistent effort to change things seasonally. We saw this with the addition of a few decidedly summery dishes appearing alongside old favorites. Yep! The Canadian Cheddar Cheese Soup is safe. OH — and remember the snazzy, backlit menus? Gone. Apparently, they weren’t technologically viable. Batteries kept going dead and whatnot. So if the dim lighting is a concern for you, be sure to have a small light or a phone flashlight handy. Here were our choices for apps. (Octopus seems to be on a number of Disney menus lately. Must’ve been a bulk sale on it somewhere.) Menu — Appetizers — Click to Enlarge The Artisanal Cheese Selections also looked pretty delish. These are available for appetizers or dessert. Cheese Selection — Click to Enlarge Le Cellier has also introduced a full “Poutine” Menu. Since these are not true poutine — Cheese Curds and Brown Gravy on Fries — the restaurant wisely puts the word “poutine” in quotation marks. Yes. Like that. Sides are listed here as well, and have been greatly reduced in recent menu overhauls. See ya later truffle mac n cheese! Hopefully that will come back onto the menu in the Winter. Menu — “Poutine” and Sides — Click to Enlarge But here’s where it gets serious: Entrees. Yep — you’re reading that right. The “Le Cellier” Filet Mignon…well, it’s different. Menu — Entrees — Click to Enlarge We’d gotten word from our readers that the risotto had been switched to a pea risotto a couple of months before, but the Truffle Butter Sauce remained. Now it’s been switched to a Bacon and Spinach risotto…with Parmesan Butter Sauce. Hmm…sounds good, but… . After much deliberation and many questions for our patient server, we finally made our selections. The first thing to arrive was the Bread Basket, which still features a medley of breads, including the beloved Pretzel Bread Sticks. They’re served with Unsalted Butter, which is sprinkled with what tastes like a combination of Maple Sugar and Sea Salt. If we hadn’t had full meals on the way, I would have indulged more in this simple combo. It was so, so good. Bread Basket My friend was excited to see the addition of Burrata on the menu, so we began with the Farmer’s Market Bounty. The beautiful platter included Compressed Cucumber, Macerated Strawberries, Burrata, and Strawberry Walnut Croutons. The combination was very summery. The Burrata, which is a fresh cheese that’s similar to fresh mozzarella but with a creamy center, was mild and tangy, and the unexpected texture of the cucumber really contrasted well. Farmers Market Bounty But, of course, I couldn’t pass up the chance to start my meal with the Canadian Cheddar Cheese Soup. (My food choices aren’t often dictated by the season.) The rich, cheesy soup tasted faintly of Smoky Bacon with the rich tang of Beer. If you haven’t sampled it at Le Cellier or at the Canada Booth during the Food and Wine Festival, I heartily recommend that you give it a try! It’s still a killer bowl of soup. Canadian Cheddar Cheese Soup The Canadian Cove Mussels were, well, not my thing. But my friend said they were fresh, delicious — and huge! The flavors were applied lightly here; the mussels weren’t swimming in cream or butter. Once again, you could see a seasonal influence at play. She enjoyed them very much. Canadian Cove Mussels We decided that we also had to try the Braised Octopus. (I knew you’d want to see what it looked like! Is it a giant octopus on a plate? It is just a big tentacle?) As it turns out, it was slices of…tentacle, I’m guessing. And the menu said it was supposed to be braised, but ours was downright burnt. Accompanied by Roasted Eggplant Puree, Pickled Baby Peppers, Chayote Squash, and Herb Pistou, we didn’t expect it to be a very colorful dish. But we did expect that something “braised” would not arrived burnt and charred. Braised Octopus Here’s a close up of the octopus. We were surprised at its condition, and even asked our server if it was supposed to be like this. She said yes, but didn’t seem terribly confident. If this one is still on the menu, I’d definitely suggest they take it back to the drawing board. The octopus was chewy and tasted charcoal-y. Didn’t really wow us. Octopus — Up Close Next, we dug into the Pulled Barbecue Pork “Poutine”. I LOVE the regular Le Cellier “poutine,” with the fancy Canadian Cheddar and red wine reduction — so good!!, but I wanted to try one of the new ones this time as well. Now, I know what you’re going to say. This is not Poutine! Yes. I completely agree with you. I think what the chefs are trying to do here is use the concept of poutine as a springboard to explore fun new flavors with different components. Think of it as a riff on the concept. BUT — poutine purists, I realize, may balk. We took it for what it was and really enjoyed it. The Pulled Pork and Cornbread Croutons were amazing, as was the drizzle of Jalapeno Aioli, which had a little kick to it. It was another dish that we would have happily devoured, had entrees not been en route to our table. It could easily serve as a main dish. Pulled Barbecue Pork “Poutine” And speaking of main dishes…we’ve arrived there! I, of course, went with the “Le Cellier” Filet Mignon. This has been one of my favorite meals in all of Walt Disney World since the first time I had it. I’ve strayed a few times to other steaks, but I always come back to this one. BUT — there are differences here. The Wild Mushroom Risotto and Truffle Butter Sauce version that I have secretly composed odes to (ok, not secretly) is gone. For now, at least. (Who knows; maybe it will come back on a Winter menu as well.) In its place, you’ll find the filet accompanied by Smoked Bacon and Spinach Risotto and Parmesan Butter Sauce. I was prepared to HATE the updates. But….ohmygosh it was one of the most delicious things I’ve ever tasted! It was better than the previous version, and I absolutely wanted more when I was finished. I’m pretty sure I didn’t even offer my friend a taste. The new risotto is super flavorful (bacon will do that to a dish, I’ve heard), and the spinach gave it  a beautiful color. The Parmesan Butter Sauce should have its own national holiday. I wanted to swim in it. “Le Cellier” Filet Mignon with Smoked Bacon and Spinach Risotto, Heirloom Toy Box Tomatoes, and Parmesan Butter Sauce One point to note: our server was well aware of the loyal following that the classic combo inspires. We asked if the kitchen kept some of the Wild Mushroom Risotto and Truffle Butter Sauce on hand for special requests. She said no. (However, if you are pining too much for the the Truffle Butter Sauce, take heart: it will be featured with the filet once more at this year’s Epcot Food and Wine Festival in the Canada Booth.) We also ordered the King Salmon. Served with Zellwood Corn Cakes, Watermelon Radish, Raspberry Vinaigrette, and Citrus Blend, we enjoyed it. Once again in this dish, we saw nods to seasonal flavors and local ingredients, and I’ll eat just about anything that has Zellwood corn involved. Wild King Salmon After what had been, on the balance, a delicious meal, we couldn’t pass up a look at the Dessert Menu. We saw lots of new offerings and that was a good thing. Desserts, beyond classics like Maple Crème Brûlée and the children’s menu favorite, Chocolate Moose, have been largely forgettable here. Dessert Menu — Click to Enlarge We went with several options to get a variety of flavors. First up — the Meyer Lemon Curd Tart — because I can’t resist the words “Lemon Curd.” And it was great. That little square on the bottom is pretty much all lemon curd with I think little shortbread-y crust at the bottom. What could be better? The Cheese Crème on top was good too, but definitely played second fiddle to the lemon tart. Meyer Lemon Curd Tart Another of the desserts excited one of my friends. She really enjoys trying things that are a little out of the ordinary, so we also ordered the Citrus Olive Oil Cake. The Cake is topped with Vanilla-Mint Panna Cotta, and comes with Chili Pepper Sorbet and a Sesame Tuile. I’ll give you that the dessert was visually appealing. But that’s where my appreciation for it stopped. I disliked everything about it — the flavor, the garnish, the words “Panna Cotta” — everything. It’s a cake….made out of olive oil. Why would you do that?! I even asked the manager…”Why would you do that?! Chili Pepper, Olive Oil, Vanilla-Mint, Sesame? That’s not a dessert, that’s a salad!!” I think those were just about my exact words. ;-D I get a little passionate about my sugar. (I’m sure you guys haven’t noticed that.) But my friend really enjoyed the citrus-olive oil flavor of the cake, and appreciated the novelty of the olive oil in a lightly sweet preparation. She also enjoyed the tuile, a cookie that reminded her somewhat of a South Carolina specialty, Benne Wafers. Citrus Olive Oil Cake We also tried the Caramel Milk Chocolate Bar. Candy Bar-type desserts like this one seem to be all the rage in Walt Disney World these days, as we keep finding them on menus. We liked this much better than the others! And the Chocolate Sorbet was a nice garnish. Caramel Milk Chocolate Bar Finally, we had to practice another nod to classic Le Cellier dining, and we ordered a dessert off the children’s menu, Chocolate Moose. Nope, there were no kids at our table. But who can resist Chocolate Moose??? Chocolate Moose! The Dark Chocolate Mousse garnished with Cookies and Chocolate Pieces to look like, well, a moose, is still as cute as ever. Sophisticated palates may not be impressed. But if you like a good dose of whimsy with your sweet ending, you’ll enjoy this one. Chocolate Moose — Inside More than satisfied with another delicious meal, we headed out to see what else we could get into. OverallSo, first things first. Le Cellier is extremely expensive. I wish it weren’t, but it is. And I still wish they offered different menus for lunch and dinner, so that you could 1) save a little by opting for a noonday meal, and 2) enjoy more variety of offerings. I really think the menu price increase will continue to keep me away from Le Cellier on a regular basis (I hadn’t visited for well over a year before this lunch, I don’t think.) But even with that said, I still love this place. Every time I visit, I have a stellar meal — up to and including this time, when they completely overhauled my favorite menu item! We find lots of interesting flavors here. Some are a little more adventurous than I care for, and execution can be tricky for others, but overall, I find more to be happy about than I find reasons to be critical. So we are going to continue the streak and keep recommending that you give Le Cellier a try for special occasion dining. Whether you enjoy savoring (most) of your favorite Le Cellier dishes unmeddled with, or you like to push the envelope with adventurous dining, you are likely to find something worth the splurge.
