  1. We are stopping into The Crew’s Cup Lounge for a light bite! Learn About: The Crew's Cup LoungeDisney World RestaurantsLocated in Disney’s Yacht Club Resort, The Crew’s Cup Lounge is a wonderful little spot to take a breather and beat the heat for a bit. In fact, if you’re ever looking for me and I’m not wandering the parks with my camera, I’ll most likely be in a Disney resort lounge somewhere hiding in the blessed coolness. This spot has a surprisingly awesome menu (dinner’s pretty darn fancy, even), a great staff, and a relaxed atmosphere. I headed in for lunch on a recent trip after arriving from the airport famished! AtmosphereThe Crew’s Cup Lounge is tucked into the hallway between Disney’s Yacht Club and Beach Club Resorts. It’s easy to miss if you aren’t paying attention. Crew’s Cup Lounge Sign See what I mean? There’s no flash here, folks. It almost feels like a private club. And that definitely enhances the relaxing atmosphere. Entrance Step inside and you’re surrounded by the same decor you see elsewhere in the resort — lots of light-stained wood everywhere, from floor to ceiling. You’ll find comfortable seating throughout the fairly small space. The wooden chairs are generous and cushioned, making them perfect for lingering. More Seating The bar is tucked into one corner of the room. Bar Seating Since there’s no outside light here, surroundings are a bit more dim than they are in lobby area; but it’s by no means dark. You’ll have no trouble reading your menus. But while you’re looking up at the lights, check out the brass surround depicting — what else? — rowing. The rowers are sculling along a smooth river, their perfect reflections mirrored in the water below. Don’t you love the detail? Well, we aren’t finished yet! Lighting and Decor Detail Check out the racing shell suspended from the ceiling! That big “window” is a view of the Yachtsman Steakhouse meat cutting room; the Crew’s Cup is often a waiting area for those awaiting their table at the restaurant. A Comfortable Place to Relax Rain slickers hang frompegs along the wall, adding a little color to the space. Crew Jackets Booths along the wall offer a little privacy if it’s cozy conversation you’re after. Booth Seating Now that we’ve had the tour, let’s get to the important stuff — the food! EatsDishes here tend to cycle in and out, so you may even encounter the same or similar items when you visit. Menu Cover It was five o’clock somewhere, so I decided to start my meal with a new selection from the standard Disney Cocktail Menu — the Pineapple Caipirinha. Menu Description — Click to Enlarge Having tried the Frozen Caipirinha at the Brazil Marketplace during the Epcot Food and Wine Festival, I figured this one would be a hit. And I was right! With a blend of Leblon Cachaça, Agave Nectar, Pineapple, and Lime, this potent drink packs a SERIOUS punch. Like…so serious that I couldn’t finish it. Well poured, Crew’s Cup bartender; well poured! Pineapple Caipirinha I decided we couldn’t pass up something salty to complement the tropically sweet drink, and the Hand-Cut Truffle Fries were calling my name! Crew’s Cup and Captain’s Grille both have these awesome fries. Rich and crisp with a fluffy center, they’re a must-try. I get them every time. House-Cut Truffle Fries The Fries are served with a Roasted Shallot Mayonnaise. I’m not a big mayo fan (this you know) but the extra flavor punch from the sweet Shallots made this dip an entirely different matter. It was fabulous. Roasted Shallot Mayonnaise And hooray for one of my favorites — Buffalo Chicken Nuggets! Boneless Pieces of Breaded Chicken Breasts are doused in traditional spicy Buffalo Sauce. They’re served with creamy Blue Cheese and Carrot and Celery Sticks. I can’t help but get these every time they’re on the menu somewhere. Buffalo Chicken Nuggets I know…not an original, but you just can’t beat Disney Chicken Nuggets — especially when they’re Buffalo style! (Note that Crew’s Cup uses the same kitchen as the Yacht Club room service, so these will be the same bites you’ll get when you call the room service line.) Buffalo Chicken Nuggets — Up Close Next, I couldn’t pass up the Lobster Roll. Served with your choice of Vegetable Orzo Salad or Fries, I opted for the latter. Lobster Roll and Fries The sandwich was prepared in the traditional manner. Big chunks of tender Lobster Meat were dressed simply with a Mayo-based Dressing, and piled onto a Roll, which had been split, buttered, and grilled. The grilled Lemon Wedge was a nice touch, too. Currently, the Lobster Roll has been replaced on the menu with New England-style Lobster Sliders. They’re basically smaller versions of the Lobster Roll. Lobster Roll — Up Close The sandwich was perfect, and capped off another great experience at Crew’s Cup Lounge. After all that? Definitely time to head to Beaches and Cream for a No Way Jose, right? ;-D No Way Jose at Beaches and Cream OverallWith all of the restaurants in Disney World, you might be tempted to pass right by bars and lounges like The Crew’s Cup. But that would be a mistake. If you haven’t taken in snacks and drinks, or even a meal, at Crew’s Cup, I can definitely recommend that you do it. Not only is the food consistently great, but the atmosphere is a great respite from the crazy of the parks — especially during the day. Let’s be honest: it’s getting hard to find places in Disney that aren’t crazy crowded. To be able to walk in, get a table, and enjoy a meal in peace and comfort could be just the thing to revive your tired vacation spirits. Whether you’re ducking out of Epcot for a quiet respite, you’re meeting friends for drinks, or you’re looking for a great meal on arrival day, check out Crew’s Cup. They haven’t failed me yet! 4. Like me, many cast members at Walt Disney World Resort strive for a heart healthy lifestyle. As in states across the country, heart disease tops the list of health concerns in Florida. Whether it’s a family member, friend or fellow cast member, we all know and care for someone who has struggled with heart disease and stroke. That’s why hundreds of Disney VoluntEARS put on their walking shoes yesterday for the 2014 Greater Orlando Heart Walk. As the signature fundraising event for the American Heart Association (AHA), the annual 5K was held at the University of Central Florida. Before they even crossed the finish line at yesterday’s race, Disney cast members formed teams to raise more than $23,000, helping the AHA make strides in its fight against heart disease and stroke. With names such as “Ahoy Me HEARTies,” “The Happiest of Hearts” and “Mickey’s PhilHEARTmagic – the teams reflected the spirit of cast members throughout Walt Disney World Resort. Thanks to cast members’ fundraising efforts and enthusiasm for the cause, Walt Disney World Resort ranks among the AHA’s top contributors in Central Florida. Besides raising important funds for the AHA’s research and education programs, the Heart Walk is a fantastic way for cast members to spend time with family, friends and team members in celebration of health and wellness. In addition to raising money and awareness for this important cause yesterday, walkers visited booths, entered to win fitness prizes and just had a great time together. 5. What better day than National Grandparents Day to share an update on our contest asking grandparents and parents to submit a favorite Disney Parks memory and photo from the 70s or 80s. Grandmother Rebecca Ackley has won our “Recreate the Magic” contest with an image she calls “Goofy looking hair for grandma.” “Recreating the Magic” for Rebecca will be traveling to the Walt Disney World Resort with her husband of 31 years, her children and grandchildren. Rebecca, who has recently been undergoing chemotherapy treatments, said another family photo with Goofy, Chip and Dale would make life “grand” for this grandmother. Be sure to check back here on the Blog to see how the Ackley family recreates their special memory during their visit to Disney Parks. ‘Disney Recreate the Magic’ Contest Winner will Relive 80s Visit by Thomas Smith: Originally posted on the Disney Parks Blog View the full article
  6. This week, we shared an exciting update that Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, one of Walt Disney’s earliest cartoon stars, is heading to Disney California Adventure Park in September. Beginning September 14, you’ll be able to meet Oswald on Buena Vista Street at Disney California Adventure park. Just look for the lucky little rabbit strolling along the sunny side of the street. Shawn has some more details about Oswald in his original story. And we also celebrated the season’s first of 26 Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Parties to kick off the week. This year’s event offers a new character dance party at the Diamond Horseshoe Saloon in Frontierland and many more experiences you can read about in Jennifer’s original story. This year’s party dates are: September 1, 9, 12, 14, 16, 19, 21, 23, 26 & 28 and October 2, 3, 5, 9, 10, 13, 16, 17, 19, 21, 23, 24, 26, 27, 30 & 31. 7. The France pavilion in Epcot has been churning out some incredible new additions to the disney food arena over the past few years. From chocolate macaron ice cream sandwiches to ice cream martinis, frangipane and brioche ice cream sandwiches, there’s always more to sample in this corner of World Showcase. The true flavor of France! And they’re not stopping for a second when it comes to the Epcot Food and Wine Festival menu! We’re excited to share exclusively with our readers the first photos of some brand new dishes coming to the France Kiosk this year — including a new take on escargot… France Marketplace Booth Epcot France 2014 Epcot Food and Wine Festival MenuThe Epcot France Kiosk menu this year offers some guest favorites, and a few twists on old standbys. 8. If you look back at this week’s stories, you’ll see some great photos shared on the Disney Parks Blog. 9. We are just a couple of weeks from the start of the most wonderful time of the year! The 2014 Epcot Food and Wine Festival gets underway on September 19! Today, we’re bringing you another preview of some of the Marketplace Booths that will be featured at this year’s festival. It’s hard to figure out just which one of the more than 25 kiosks is our favorite. We love trying returning classics and brand new dishes every year. Come check out what’s new and what’s returning at the Greece and Puerto Rico Marketplace Booths. Greece Marketplace BoothNight and day, it’s never surprising to see loooooong lines at the Greece Marketplace Booth. This exotic spot has been a favorite for as long as it’s been around. Greece Marketplace Booth But a few years back, it cemented its claim to fame when they introduced a simple dish — Griddled Greek Cheese with Pistachios and Honey. It’s a favorite, and it’s returning again this year. 2014 Epcot Food and Wine Festival Greece Booth MenuVegetarian MoussakaGriddled Greek Cheese with Pistachios and Honey (gluten free)Chicken gyro with tzatziki SauceSpanakopitaDomaine Skouras MoscofileroDomaine Siglas Assyrtiko/AthiriAlpha Estate Axia Syrah-XinomavroTzatziki Martini featuring Crop Organic Cucumber Vodka and BOLS Natural Yoghurt LiqueurThroughout the Food and Wine Festival, we continue to see a commitment on Disney’s part to offer inventive and delicious vegetarian dishes. Brand new for 2014, the Greece Marketplace will offer a classic dish – Moussaka! But this version is vegetarian, made with soy as a meat replacement. We tried it at the Food and Wine Festival Preview dinner, and it won rave reviews. Vegetarian Moussaka The dish was surprisingly hearty and full of bold flavor. But our real reason for trip after trip to the Greece Booth is the super simple Griddled Greek Cheese with Pistachios and Honey. It’s sweet, salty, crunchy, and creamy all in one bite! In short order, this has become one of our all-time favorite festival dishes. Greek Griddled Cheese Once again, guests can expect to see a Gyro on the menu here. But in another twist, they’re featuring Chicken as the meat on the petite sandwich instead of traditional Lamb. Served with Tzatziki, gyro fans are likely to enjoy this version. Chicken Gyro with Tzatziki Sauce Spanakopita, a savory turnover with a creamy Spinach Filling, returned to the festival lineup last year. I’m not a huge fan of super spinach-y versions of this classic dish, but there’s always been enough cheesy goodness in this one to make it acceptable. Spanakopita There’s also an interesting new cocktail added to the mix here: the Tzatziki Martini featuring Crop Organic Cucumber Vodka and BOLS Natural Yoghurt Liqueur. The savory drink is certainly a departure from the fruity concoctions that we usually see around World Showcase. Puerto Rico Marketplace BoothAfter a brief hiatus, the Puerto Rico Marketplace Booth is making a comeback and featuring a brand new menu! Puerto Rico Marketplace Booth Disney chefs wanted to capture an authentic taste of this beautiful Caribbean island in the new menu, so they’re offering a diverse range of dishes in 2014. 2014 Epcot Food and Wine Festival Puerto Rico Booth MenuEnsalada de Carrucho: Caribbean Conch Salad with Onion, Tomato and Cilantro (gluten free)Carne Guisada con Arroz Blanco: Slow-Braised Beef with Puerto Rican-Grown Rice (gluten free)Frituras: Sorullitos (Sweet Polenta Fries) and Bolitas de Queso (Cheese Fritter with Mayo Ketchup)Flan Cocho: Vanilla Caramel Custard with Chocolate Coffee CakeGasolina SangriiiaMedalla Light BeerFrozen San Juan BreezeFrozen San Juan Breeze with Don Q Limón FloaterChilled Club Caribe Mango Rum (neat)The Ensalada de Carrucho, or Caribbean Conch Salad, will offer the fresh flavors of Citrus Juices, Onion, Tomato, and Cilantro. This will definitely be a refreshing addition to the lineup. Ensalada de Carrucho: Caribbean Conch Salad with Onion, Tomato and Cilantro Another new addition to the Puerto Rico Booth promises to be a big hit: Frituras! These fried bits of deliciousness are common street food in Puerto Rico and take on many different forms. At this year’s festival, you’ll find two offerings in the genre: Sorullitos, or Fried Sweet Polenta Sticks; and Bolitas de Queso, or Cheese Fritters. Both snacks are served with a traditional dipping sauce, Mayo Ketchup. Sweet Corn Sorullitos with Mayo Ketchup Lovers of comfort food will also want to check out the Carne Guisada con Arroz Blanco, or Slow-Braised Beef with White Rice. We’ve had a chance to sample this dish as well and we really enjoyed it! Carne Guisada con Arroz Blanco The drink line up promises to offer some great options, too! Look for the Gasolina Sangriiia Cocktail. (Yep, that’s the way you spell it.) This pre-made, ready to drink cocktail features a blend of Rum and Fruit Juices. Gasolina Sangriiia Cocktail Guests looking for a non-alcoholic refresher are sure to enjoy the Frozen San Juan Breeze. You can also punch it up with a Don Q Limón Floater! 13. Here is a little secret, I love my job and working with runDisney. Event weekends are exciting and standing at the finish line watching thousands of people accomplish their goals is uplifting, rewarding and sometimes emotional. From cheers of excitement to tears of joys, the stories that unfold at the finish line are incredible. I am truly inspired meeting and talking with our runners. Their stories provide messages we can all learn from. Last year I introduced the runDisney community to 81-year-old Flor Irlandez from Portland, OR. In 2013 she was the oldest runner to complete the inaugural Dumbo Double Dare at Disneyland Half Marathon at Disneyland Resort. She ran the Disneyland 10K on Saturday and the half marathon on Sunday, 19.3 miles. Last weekend she returned to run the 2014 Dumbo Double Dare, this time at the age of 82. Running with two of her daughters, a son in-law and grandson, she once again completed the two-day event and collected three runDisney finisher medals and family memories to last for years. There are a couple lessons we can takeaway from Flor’s accomplishment. First, we should not let age be a barrier to accomplish our goals. Flor’s message is simple, “Just get going, not just running, but walking, getting out, sweating …. I just feel good after a run, everybody should do it.” Second, participating in a runDisney event can be fun for the entire family. Flor has inspired three generations to lead a healthy active lifestyle. “It just makes it fun and it’s no longer about running and racing, but about being together and being healthy as a family,” says Marissa Walker, Flor’s daughter from Berkeley, CA. Flor, your accomplishments are amazing, not just in running but also in how you have inspired generations. We all look forward to seeing you at the finish line for years to come. 14. It’s September! Yay for cooler temperatures, right?? Well…maybe not quite yet. But we’re all dreaming of Fall flavors, even if the mercury is still registering in the 80/90 (or higher) range. If I were in Disney California Adventure, I’d just mosey on over to Cozy Cone Motel and grab a cold one at Cone Number 4. Cozy Cone Motel! Nah. I’m not talking about that kinda cold one. I have something even better! (Well. I think so, anyway.) It’s Red’s Apple Freeze to the Rescue! Red’s Apple Freeze…or LeFou’s Brew — Whichever Your Prefer! But since I am not, in fact, anywhere near Disneyland (sigh), I’ll have to make do and make my own. And we can SO do that. It looks a little like beer, doesn’t it? But this is a frosty beverage even the littlest in your company can enjoy. This concoction combines sweet and tart — no-sugar-added frozen apple juice flavored slightly with marshmallow, and topped by a creamy, passion-fruit froth. Yep. It sounds weird. But it works! (And yes…you Walt Disney World Lovers…feel free to call it Le Fou’s Brew and dream that you’re in Gaston’s Tavern if you’d like. Same difference. ) Wanna know how to make it at home? Give this handy recipe a go! Red’s Apple FreezeMakes 3-4 Servings Foam Topping Ingredients: 1 cup Heavy Whipping Cream, cold 4 tablespoons Mango Nectar/Juice 4 tablespoons Passionfruit Juice 3 tablespoons Sugar Apple Slush Ingredients: 2 (12 ounce) cans of frozen No-Sugar Added Apple Juice Concentrate (keep frozen until ready to use) 12 ounces cold Water 3 pumps (or tablespoons) Torani Toasted Marshmallow Syrup Foam Topping Directions: 1. Pour whipping cream into mixing bowl. 2. Add mango and passionfruit juices. 3. Add sugar and beat on high until stiff peaks form (this can take a while and it helps if your mixing bowl has been chilled). 4. Set aside in fridge. Apple Slush Directions: 1. Dump both cans of frozen apple juice into a blender. 2. Add water and 3 squirts of the toasted marshmallow syrup. 3. Blend on high for about 10 seconds. You should now have a slush texture beverage. 4. Immediately pour into glasses and top with prepared foam topping. I can’t wait to try this at home! It’s a shot of Oscar, the smallest bear in the place, who appears on stage during the show with the Five Bear Rugs band. It sure looks like he has a case of stage fright. What’s on his mind? 17. My fellow author Tom Smith recently shared some details about My Disney Experience – a key component of MyMagic+ at Walt Disney World Resort. Today, I wanted to highlight a fun way to show your Disney Side using another element of MyMagic+ – retail MagicBands and accessories. Guests who book a Walt Disney World Resort vacation already receive a MagicBand in their choice of select colors. We also offer retail MagicBands which are great for guests who may not be staying at a Walt Disney World Resort owned and operated hotel but want to take advantage of some cool technology during their visit. There are currently seven different colors offered. You may also recall seeing some special graphic MagicBands at events like Frozen Summer Fun at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. I spoke with merchandiser Kevin-Michael Lezotte about how guests can show their Disney Side using MagicBands. “There are a few ways guests can personalize their MagicBands before or during their visit,” explained Kevin-Michael. “We have ‘MagicBandits,’ which are small characters or icons that attach to the side of a MagicBand. We also have ‘MagicSliders’ and ‘CoverBands,’ both of which can slide over the tops of MagicBands. The latter is offered in large and small sizes depending on the size of a guest’s wrist. These accessories are a fun way for guests to show off their Disney Side while visiting Walt Disney World Resort.” The seven solid-color retail MagicBands are $12.95 each plus tax. Retails for other MagicBand accessories vary. At the time of purchase, guests must present one of the following for retail MagicBands to be linked: valid theme park admission, Memory Maker card or an active MagicBand. If the item linked to is already connected with the guest’s My Disney Experience account, all existing plans – such as tickets, dining reservations, Disney PhotoPass Service, and FastPass+ selections – will seamlessly link and automatically be accessible via the new MagicBand. Guests who don’t have an established My Disney Experience account prior to purchasing a retail MagicBand can easily create one by visiting www.MyDisneyExperience.com. It is important to note that the touch to pay option will only work for guests staying at Walt Disney World Resort owned and operated hotels who have establish charging privileges on their resort accounts. You can find retail MagicBands and accessories in several merchandise locations throughout Walt Disney World Resort. The Disney Parks online store also carries select MagicBand accessories. 18. Boasting unique geological formations, pristine beaches and rich mix of cultures, Barbados has something to suit every taste. It’s sure to be one of your favorite stops on our weeklong Southern Caribbean cruises! During our call on Bridgetown, here are just a few of the many incredible adventures your family will love … Harrison’s Cave and Scenic Drive – Harrison’s Cave, undoubtedly one of the most spectacular natural attractions in the entire Caribbean, is a stunning cavern formed from a particularly beautiful type of crystallized limestone. This tour includes an underground journey on a tram to see thousands of gleaming stalagmites and stalactites. You’ll visit several areas of the cave, including its 150-foot Great Hall, along with its lowest point where a waterfall plunges into an emerald pool. Located near the center of the island, your visit to this magnificent natural phenomenon includes a scenic drive through the countryside. Turtle Shipwreck & Snorkel Adventure – Water and wildlife lovers won’t want to miss this adventure! An exhilarating powerboat ride takes you to one of Barbado’s most beautiful beaches, in addition to two fantastic snorkel spots – a historic shipwreck teeming with marine life and a spot frequented by sea turtles. Swimming with these gentle creatures is something your family will never forget! For a more luxurious experience, consider the 5-Star Catamaran and Turtle Encounter excursion, which also includes a chance to swim with the sea turtles following a catamaran cruise and all-you-can eat-and-drink lunch. Discover Barbados – Often called “The Little England of the Caribbean,” British roots are apparent in the island’s many historical sites. This tour gives you a chance to explore some of these locales, including St. John’s Church and St. Nicholas Abbey. The Abbey, built in 1660, is one of only three genuine Jacobean mansions in the Western Hemisphere. This well-preserved mansion is actually a sugar plantation, so a visit here lets you see the traditional way of making rum using handpicked sugar cane. Our Beautiful Barbados excursion also includes a stop at the unique St. Nicholas Abbey, and both tours offer an adult-only departure in addition to one for families. In the final post of this series, next week I’ll share my picks for what to do in St. Kitts. Don’t forget, when the ship’s in port, venture ashore! 20. One surefire way to enhance your Walt Disney World Resort stay even more is to rent a poolside cabana — a private, shaded retreat perfect to while away the hours or to gather with friends and family for some added fun. Available at Disney’s Contemporary Resort and Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa (note, the cabanas at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort are closed during the resort’s renovations), these private sanctuaries include standard amenities like 32-inch LCD television with cable access, DVD/CD/MP3 player, ceiling fan, mini refrigerator stocked with complimentary sodas and water, fruit basket (may only be available with advance reservation), plush towels, and padded chaise lounge and straight-back chairs. Plus, a cabana attendant helps take care of all your needs. Private dining is available at an additional cost. If you’re splish-splashing at one of the water parks, yeah, you’re covered (pun intended) there, too. Beachcomber Shacks at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon and Polar Patios at Disney’s Blizzard Beach include a locker, refillable mugs, a cooler full of bottled water, lounge furniture and towels. Attendants also offer “tips and tricks” for the water parks. Cabanas are a great way to spoil yourself and enrich your whole resort experience. Call 407-WDW-PLAY (939-7529) for reservations and info. 22. Trying to get your recommended daily servings of fruits and veggies while touring the parks? Learn About: Flame Tree BarbecueAnimal Kingdom Disney World RestaurantsWe’re spotlighting something that can help… with half of that goal, anyway ;)! We’re visiting Flame Tree Barbecue in Disney’s Animal Kingdom for the Fruit Plate with Honey Yogurt. Flame Tree Barbecue is known for its hearty offerings with a menu focused on barbecue, naturally. Featured items include Ribs & Chicken and Pork Sandwiches. And ever since Trilo-Bites changed its menu, Flame Tree is THE place in Animal Kingdom to grab a Jumbo Turkey Leg. So the Fruit Plate stands out by being unique among the barbecue offerings. We’ve always liked the Fresh Fruit Salad that you can find at Tamu Tamu Refreshments and Bradley Falls during the warmer months – so much so that we’ve yet to give the Flame Tree Fruit Plate its due. Let’s have a look! Flame Tree Barbecue sign The menu description says “Seasonal Fruit served with Honey Yogurt.” For my visit, the fruits served happened to match the picture on the menu: honeydew, watermelon, grapes, pineapple, cantaloupe, and orange. Flame Tree Menu While it doesn’t have the same visual impact as the Fresh Fruit Salad, it’s not bad in its own right! Fruit Plate Fruit Plate Fruit Plate close-up It’s just a nice, light, chilled option, and there is a lot to be said for the portion size. For my dish, the half-orange wasn’t ripe yet (you can see how the orange rind is yellow and green), but everything else was in good shape, including the juicy pineapple. Close-up on orange half Pineapple For those who need to add a little extra zip to their fruit, the Honey Yogurt does the trick just fine, offering a creamy, sweet dipping sauce with a nice emphasis on the honey.
