  5. Happy New Year! It’s hard to believe it’s already 2015. (I think that’s a sign I’m getting old.) And with every New Year, I always seem to talk about New Year Resolutions. Maybe I’ll eat better or start a workout regiment in 2015? If only I had a workout buddy like Goofy. Working out with him would be much more fun. Just look at him shooting hoops aboard Disney Cruise Line in February 2000. Here’s to year of great fun (and working out, I suppose). 6. Join us in welcoming back Guest Reviewer Katie Roth with a review of ‘Ohana at Disney’s Polynesian Resort. Note that this review was written before the most recent round of ‘Ohana Menu Changes. Currently the Chicken Skewer is not being served at the restaurant. Aloha! Learn About:‘Ohana Polynesian ResortDisney World Restaurants I have been staying at the Polynesian for years, but I had never eaten at ‘Ohana until last year! I know, I know…utter blasphemy! I was psyched that my husband and I decided to take an impromptu trip to Disney World AND were able to score a dinner reservation at ‘Ohana. I admit that it was I that brought my husband into the light of Disney, and I just love getting to share my favorite experiences and eats with him whenever we visit Walt Disney World. Knowing how much he loves grilled meat, I absolutely could not wait to eat here with him! To help control our excitement, we went to Tambu Lounge to temper those jitters. My husband went all out and ordered the Lapu Lapu while I went with a pineapple mojito (regular mojito with fresh pineapple chunks added). We loved our drinks and were primed for dinner Lapu Lapu! In my opinion, ‘Ohana’s location lends itself to be one of those ‘would have missed it if I didn’t know it was there’ restaurants. The location of the restaurant is on the upper terrace of the Great Ceremonial House lobby tucked away behind the Tambu Lounge. If you are in front of Kona Café then you have gone too far! As I’ve seen in the past couple of years, the easiest way to spot ‘Ohana is by the long line of people checking in for their Advance Dining Reservation (ADR) or those hopeful souls asking about a walk-in reservation. When it comes to Disney food (particularly at ‘Ohana), never leave fate to chance. Lately, I have been eating a lot less meat and more fish for health reasons. I informed the host at the check-in station that I would like a vegetarian/pescetarian meal to which he replied would be no problem. I have heard great things about the vegetarian offerings at ‘Ohana and couldn’t wait to try them out! Just remember, if you are going to make a special request like this, check in early and let them know. Once you are checked in, you will be given a buzzer and told to wait by the Tambu Lounge for your “cousin” (server) to take you to your table. If this is your first time to the restaurant, they will take you on a mini tour of the food that will be served to you. Keep in mind that this is family style, so there are no menus to meander through, and serving sizes are completely at your discretion! This is a restaurant where it is imperative to remember the mantra “pace yourself.” ‘Ohana Grill — where the magic happens! AtmosphereThe restaurant atmosphere lends to a very relaxed feel – no one likes to feel uptight or stressed when their pants are at risk of popping a button. The lighting is very dim, particularly in the aisle areas where we were seated. A large portion of the dining area is set under “huts” (thatched roofs, carved poles, mood lighting). The decorations are minimal and the colors are muted. An entire wall of the restaurant is comprised of windows that overlook the Polynesian resort, the Seven Seas Lagoon, and straight over to Cinderella Castle. This is another location that is great for watching the fireworks while dining! ‘Ohana Dining Room. I would have to say that the centerpiece of the restaurant is the large grilling station adorned with slate. It was gorgeous! Every home should have one. View of ‘Ohana Grill. And now on to the grub! EatsFirst out is the Welcome Bread, which is a pineapple coconut bread. I am saddened to report that our loaf was cold, dry, and came with ZERO butter! I remember it coming with butter the prior year, so I was a little disappointed with that. You know, because I was going to go hungry with this meal… hehe. Pineapple Coconut Bread. The salad came out shortly after the bread and was a combination of chopped romaine, passion fruit and mandarin orange chunks, and passion fruit vinaigrette. The salad had a nice tangy, fruity flavor, but it was nothing that I wanted to over-indulge in. ‘Ohana Salad. The appetizers came out around 2 minutes after the salad. Something you will learn very quickly about ‘Ohana is that they bring the food out very fast. They’re really trying to maximize their turnover, I suppose! I got a special vegetarian appetizer, which was a trio of homemade hummus dips and pita chips. Oh my gosh, these hummus dips were AH-mazing! They were packed with flavors and didn’t taste at all like the store-bought stuff. The chips were thick, flaky, and slightly oily. They tasted homemade as well and went perfectly with the hummus. My husband even snuck a few for himself. I am not kidding, I would have been happy to just eat this for my meal! Vegetarian Appetizer: Homemade Hummus and Pita Chips. The regular appetizers that were brought to us were pork potstickers and honey coriander chicken wings. The potstickers were amazing like last time (yes, okay, you caught me…I had one or two). For all of you that hail from St. Louis, these babies reminded us of toasted ravioli, but were packed with a savory pork filling inside a crispy exterior and topped with a really sweet glaze. They were perfect. The wings were sweet, savory, not spicy, had a prominent cinnamon flavor, and were cooked perfectly. Wings and Pork Pot Stickers While the appetizers were being brought out we ordered another drink; the Magical Star Cocktail. I was a little surprised when it came out because it was in a completely different glass than the picture showed in the drink book. Hmm….now that I think of it, maybe from the effects of the other two drinks we actually ordered something else? In any case, this drink was perfect for the meal! I liked it more than the previous two for sure …probably because I couldn’t taste the alcohol in this. Magic Star Cocktail. Next out were the side dishes for the meat, veggies and noodles. The veggies were a mixture of stir-fried broccoli, red bell pepper, mini corn, water chestnuts, and soy sauce. The vegetables were super crisp and the sauce was savory and (thankfully) not overly salty. The noodles were sweet, chewy, sticky, and delicious. Even though they were cold, we still enjoyed them very much. Next time I think I’m going to make a combo of the veggies, noodles, and peeled shrimp. ‘Ohana Veggies. Once all of the sides come out, the “cousins” go into full swing serving everyone skewers upon skewers of freshly grilled and marinated meats and shrimp. They also bring out two different dipping sauces to accompany the proteins; peanut and sweet ‘n sour. I left it to my husband to describe the proteins for me. The pork was very tender and was extremely flavorful from the savory marinade it was grilled in. He said the pork was best with the sweet ‘n sour sauce. He recommends using your fingers because “ain’t nobody got time for forks!” (Hmm…I think the alcohol had kicked in for him…) The beef was less savory than the pork, which led to the natural flavor profile of the beef to really come out. It was cooked to medium and is great for steak lovers. The chicken was an alternative flavor to the other meats and was a little dry (Editor’s Note: The Grilled Chicken Skewer has been discontinued from this menu.). Meat from skewers: Chicken, Pork, and Steak. The shrimp was tender, seasoned perfectly, had a great charbroiled flavor, and wasn’t “fishy.” Ohana Shrimp. I was somewhat disappointed in the vegetarian entrée. I was expecting a gorgeous display of tempura fried veggies to come out, but instead I was served what was basically the veggie side dish with the addition of tofu chunks and crispy potato wedges. Don’t get me wrong, it was delicious, I just had delusions of vegetable grandeur running through my head. Vegetarian Entree: Stir Fry Vegetables As you can see from the picture below, when you don’t pace yourself, you will look like this! Utter. Look. Of. Defeat. I couldn’t even show the picture of my husband after eating all of the meat; it was just too embarrassing. The look of defeat! Okay, so by this point the elastic band on my running shorts was stretched to the max. Going against my better judgment, I still indulged in the dessert (Bananas Foster bread pudding served with vanilla ice cream). The bread pudding is actually made from the pineapple coconut bread and is served warm with vanilla bean ice cream and a container of warm liquid gold (bananas foster rum caramel sauce with banana slices in it) on the side. Since it is self-serve, you have all of the power as to how much sauce goes on your pudding. The texture of the pudding was great with its crunchy crust and warm, tender inside. All of the flavors worked so well together and I was so thankful it wasn’t overly sweet. We wished we wouldn’t have eaten so much so that we could have enjoyed more of this!! Bread Pudding! OverallOverall, we thought that this meal was fantastic and we can’t wait to go back! Our service was great; friendly and efficient. The food was out of this world, even if it was cranked out like an assembly line. 13. Happy New Year!! Learn About:Captain Cook’s Polynesian ResortDisney World Restaurants We don’t know a better way to celebrate than with this gorgeousness! OK, OK, we know you’ve probably got all kinds of resolutions for 2015. But, as far as I’m concerned, those start on MONDAY!!! Let’s take a look at one last indulgence, shall we…? On a recent visit to the Polynesian Village Resort, I stopped by Captain Cook’s and peeked in the refrigerator, expecting to find the Chocolate Macadamia Nut Cupcake, as per usual. However, something unexpected caught my eye that I decided to pick up: the Tiramisu Cupcake. Tiramisu Cupcake Now, typically I might take you on a little tour around Captain Cook’s before we dig in, but the big news at the Polynesian is the recent reopening of the lobby at the Great Ceremonial House, which has been closed off for refurbishment for much of the year. Polynesian Village Resort lobby So, instead, I thought I might show some of the pictures of the refurbished lobby since the Polynesian is such a major dining destination at Disney World no matter which resort you choose to stay in. Obviously, our focus on this site is food, and since the Polynesian is home to such popular restaurants as ‘Ohana and Kona Cafe, we know that many DFB readers loved seeing the lobby upon arrival for their Advance Dining Reservation, whether they were preparing to enjoy breakfast with Stitch and Lilo at ‘Ohana, or the Spirit of Aloha Dinner Show. Entering from the main downstairs entrance, the signature large waterfalls have been removed. Now this area features open space, lots of seating, and a small water feature (which differs from the original artist renderings for now, but I understand that the Tiki statue previously featured in the artwork may still become a part of the structure next year). Polynesian Village Resort lobby Seating in the lobby Water Feature Without the presence of the large waterfalls, the new light fixtures become a major focal point. Lighting fixtures Lighting fixtures Lighting fixtures Moving upstairs, the natural light seems to stream more to dining areas such as Kona Cafe and Kona Island (although I really don’t know if that’s more due to the fact that construction walls have been cutting off much of the light in recent months, so my eyes may just be readjusting). Kona Cafe The seating area near Tambu Lounge and ‘Ohana has new furniture and carpeting as well. Seating area near the Tambu Lounge Seating area near the Tambu Lounge Captain Cook’s, however, remains unchanged (well, since the reopening from its own refurbishment in August, that is), so now that we’re there, why don’t we get straight to the cupcake? Captain Cook’s sign Captain Cook’s dining room When I spotted the Tiramisu Cupcake, the first thing I noticed were the peaks of frosting all over the top. I assumed it might be a marshmallow or whipped cream topping to mimic the light texture of tiramisu. But it was actually — to my happy surprise — rich, dense peaks of cream cheese (I assume as a play on mascarpone), all dusted with cocoa like a proper tiramisu. Tiramisu Cupcake The white cake base resembles the flavor of a ladyfinger biscuit with it’s sweetness (and maybe more so its sponge cake texture), but nowhere in the cupcake did I pick up any hint of alcohol typical of a tiramisu, like a rum or kahlua flavoring. Tiramisu Cupcake The filling is a chocolate mocha cream. Rather than a strong espresso, it offers just the slightest hint of coffee flavor — almost like a coffee frappe-style drink, where the emphasis is on the chocolate over the coffee. Inside the Tiramisu Cupcake My one area of critique is that there was very little filling inside, and since I enjoyed the taste of it that was a small disappointment. Hopefully you can tell from this picture that the filling doesn’t actually fill much of the cake at all. I’m not sure if this was unique to my cupcake, or if that’s how they all are. Inside the Tiramisu Cupcake Overall, though, I thought this one was a definite winner, and though cupcakes around Captain Cook’s change with some frequency, I hope it sticks around so I can grab another sometime. Funny thing is, I don’t like tiramisu. But the things that I don’t like about it — the texture of soaked cake and the alcohol favoring — aren’t part of this cupcake at all. Granted, the things I don’t like are based merely on personal preference. So it’s just luck that this cupcake happens to take the parts I do enjoy — a sweet creamy cheese, cocoa, and hints of coffee — and eliminates the rest. Terrific! So, to sum: if you don’t like tiramisu, don’t rule out this cupcake. If you do like tiramisu, don’t rule out this cupcake. It’s a tasty novelty item and while only some of it resembles actual tiramisu, it’s a fun little spin on several of the elements of this popular Italian dessert. Whether you’re checking out the new surroundings at the Polynesian, or waiting for a seat to open at Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto after it opens sometime next year, be sure to keep an eye out all over the place (including the refrigerators!) to see what new surprises are in store. 15. There’s nothing our Creative Entertainment team enjoys more than producing amazing live entertainment for our guests. Here are just a few of the new experiences that debuted in Disney Parks around the world in 2014: “Disney Festival of Fantasy” Parade – This stunning daytime spectacular took to the streets of Magic Kingdom Park in March with amazingly detailed floats, vibrantly colored costumes, energetic performances, and a fire-breathing dragon – all created on an enormous scale never before seen at Walt Disney World Resort! Seasonal Celebrations at Disneyland Paris – Already known for their festivals at Halloween and Christmas, Disneyland Paris took it up two notches this year with lively celebrations of spring and summer. “Swing Into Spring” and “Summertime” brought fresh, new promenades and shows to Main Street and the Castle Stage, along with character appearances and live music throughout both parks at the resort. Summer Events at Walt Disney World Resort – It was a summer of hot and cool special events at Walt Disney World Resort. At Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Harambe Nights honored the 20th anniversary of “The Lion King” with the hottest party this side of Africa, featuring live concerts, celebrity narrators, and an unforgettable nighttime celebration. Meanwhile, “Frozen Summer Fun LIVE!” at Disney’s Hollywood Studios cooled things down with ice-skating, real snow, and a procession, sing-along, and fireworks featuring appearances by Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, and Olaf. New Disney Character Friends – A highlight of any visit to a Disney Park is getting to meet Mickey Mouse and his pals. In 2014, some other characters stopped in to say “Hello!” for the first time. Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, one of Walt Disney’s first cartoon creations, visited Tokyo DisneySea and Disney California Adventure park, where our guests also got to meet Doc McStuffins from Disney Junior. And Hiro and Baymax flew in hot on the heels of the release of their new movie, “Big Hero 6.” Nighttime Spectaculars – Disney Parks dazzled after dark in 2014 with the introduction of several new nighttime spectaculars. The award-winning “Once Upon a Time” came to Tokyo Disneyland in summer, and the new “Disney Paint the Night” Parade lit up Hong Kong Disneyland in October. At Disney’s Hollywood Studios, nightly “Symphony in the Stars” fireworks debuted during Star Wars Weekends, and even more “Frozen” fun was added to “World of Color – Winter Dreams” at Disney California Adventure park and “Disney Dreams… of Christmas” in Disneyland Paris. All this, plus the Rock Your Disney Side 24-hour event over Memorial Day weekend, expansion of Halloween on the High Seas to all four ships in the Disney Cruise Line fleet, and more! There’s been quite a lot happening in the world of Creative Entertainment this year, and 2015 promises to be even bigger, especially with “Frozen Fun” and the Diamond Celebration coming to Disneyland Resort. 16. Yes, the Christmas holiday has come and gone… So you might think it must be time to halt all the gingerbread chat for the year. However, just a few days after Christmas I stumbled upon two gingerbread displays that I’d never seen before. Sure, we’ve taken you on tours of the Grand Floridian’s famous Gingerbread House, and this year’s new Frozen-inspired Gingerbread Display at the Contemporary Resort. But I must say, these smaller displays have a charm all their own. I’m talking about the Gingerbread Houses created by Cast Members at the Art of Animation and Pop Century Resorts! 17. Earlier this year, avid Disney Parks Blog readers joined us as we celebrated the arrival of two Western lowland gorillas at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Those births were a very exciting time for our Animal Programs team, but we’ve had plenty of excitement throughout the year with hundreds of births and hatchings! (You are probably thinking, “Where are they keeping all of these baby animals?!”, but keep in mind that this large number includes invertebrates that can have 100 offspring at a time!) While we don’t have the space here to feature all of our new babies, the Animal Programs team at Disney’s Animal Kingdom and Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge have helped compile a quick list of some of the baby animals we welcomed this year. Just around the corner from the gorilla families on Pangani Forest Exploration Trail, you can find a maze of slender-tailed meerkat burrows, and might even catch a glimpse of this baby meerkat or one of its nine siblings! The adults can be seen sitting upright as they keep watch over the newly extended family, and an alarm chirp sends them all scurrying into the safety of the burrows. A short walk from the meerkats, the African Aviary on Pangani Forest Exploration Trail is also home to new babies. These offspring weren’t born, they hatched! The Great blue turaco is the largest of the 23 types of turacos found only in Africa. They are primarily fruit eaters, and although they can fly very well, they prefer to run and scamper about the tree limbs, almost like a squirrel. This beautiful bird and recent hatchling can be seen in the Africa Aviary. Also in the African Aviary, you can find a colony of Black cheeked lovebirds – a vulnerable African species of parrot. Only two zoos in the United States care for this species. The hatchlings weigh in at only ~5 grams (about the weight of a quarter) and reach only 4 inches in length when they are fully grown. A wallaby joey is one of the many interesting species you don’t want to miss at the Oasis Exhibits as you begin your adventure at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. He is most active during the cooler parts of the day, mornings and after late day rains. If you didn’t see his birth announcement on the Disney Parks Blog, you can check it out here. Kilimanjaro Safaris, an open-air vehicle tour of a lush African savannah, is now home to this cute springbok calf, along with three other calves and their families. The springbok is able to run alongside its mother within an hour after birth, but of course it tires quickly, and will then flatten itself into the long grass and hide from predators. In 2014, the team at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge was delighted to welcome three Thomson’s gazelles, which are very similar in appearance to the springbok. The newest addition, pictured here, is a girl who was born in October. Although she’s resting in this photo, she often leaps and tears around the savannah. Thomson’s gazelles are some of the fastest antelope in Africa, and combine their incredible speed with agile jumps and maneuvers. They are often able to outrun cheetahs and other predators. Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge is also home to a Red river hog sow and her three piglets, born in May. This is her second litter and the entire family, including dad and aunt, can be found on the Pembe savannah. (Did you know a female hog is called a “sow”? You did? “Sow” did I!) All of our births and hatchings are celebrated because many animals, including the Western lowland gorilla and Black cheeked lovebirds, need our help for their species to survive. Several species are a part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan (SSP). Look for other baby animals and their families throughout Disney’s Animal Kingdom and Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. We look forward to the New Year as we continue to protect wildlife and wild places around the world. Happy New Year from all of our families to yours!! 18. We are standing on the cusp of a brand New Year, and we can’t wait to see what 2015 holds in store for us — and Disney! But we can’t wave goodbye to the old year without looking back on some of the biggest food news that happened throughout Disney Parks. Most of this year’s big news happened at Walt Disney World, but we have a few memorable moments to share with you from Disneyland as well as other Disney Parks around the globe. Today, we bring you a look back at 2014′s Biggest Disney Food News Stories! We have a LOT to cover — let’s get started! First up, a little something I like to call… The Beginning of Finally Doing Something with Pleasure IslandIt’s the story we feel like we’ve been watching for years — what’s happening at Downtown Disney Orlando’s now defunct Pleasure Island?? Well, 2014 finally saw some solid progress, and the Disney Springs story seems to be coming to life. An Artist’s Rendering of Disney Springs Lots of changes have made a trip to Downtown Disney a challenge in the last couple of years. But as the year draws to a close, the parking garages are open, and we are seeing some of the plans take shape! 2014 kicked off with a surprise restaurant opening of sorts — the House of Blues added a new counter service offering, The Smokehouse. We say surprise because we told you about the restaurant for the first time just days before the walls came down and the doors opened for business! The Smokehouse at The House of Blues The Smokehouse is strictly a walk-up window venue. But the covered outdoor seating is pleasant, and you can often take in live music as you enjoy barbecue favorites, like their Beef Brisket Sandwich, St. Louis Ribs, or Smoked Turkey Legs. Smoked Beef Brisket Sandwich with House-made Cole Slaw from The Smokehouse But it wasn’t all good news for Downtown Disney this year. Guests at T-Rex Cafe last Spring were in for some decidedly unpleasant dinner excitement, as one of the restaurant’s humongous fish tanks sprang a leak during dinner service! However, no one was injured and all of the fish were reportedly rescued. We’re glad that all turned out happily in the situation, but we’ll never look at those huge fish tanks quite the same way again! Also in the Spring, we said hello to a spot that’s quickly become one of our most favorite spots to shop in all of Walt Disney World — the Marketplace Co-op! Disney Centerpiece We have found some totally awesome stuff in the store’s Disney Centerpiece Section, including dishes, glasses, and other tableware that celebrate all of our Disney cult favorites. Whether you’re a Dole Whip fan or love memorabilia celebrating Tomorrowland, chances are you’ll find something that you’ve just gotta have! Orange Bird Section Starbucks also continued to enrich its partnership with Disney in 2014, as 2 different locations opened at opposite ends of Downtown Disney. Guests visiting Marketplace location will find a walk-up counter that’s tucked between entrances to the mammoth World of Disney store. Marketplace Starbucks But you can also grab a cup of siren-bedecked java in the other location at West Side. West Side Starbucks in Downtown Disney The huge Starbucks includes inside and outside seating as well as a special Reserve Counter for guests who’d like to try especially rare coffees. Reserve Coffee Counter With the Disney Springs storyline firming up, we’re also hearing about some of the new restaurants that are planned for the area. Expect the Boathouse to offer a menu including seafood, steaks, and chops. Guests can choose from three different themed bars, including The Captain’s Raw Bar, The Admiral’s Club Bar, and The Dock Bar. Rooms within the restaurant will be nautically themed, natch. The Boathouse — Artist Rendering of the Inside But perhaps most interestingly, the restaurant will also serve as the launching spot for a number of boat-themed attractions. Guests can ride on a 40-foot Italian Water Taxi while they enjoy champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries. There will also be guided “Amphicar” Tours that highlight sites around Disney Springs. The Boathouse — Outside View Celebrity chef watchers will want to experience Morimoto Asia, a Pan-Asian restaurant. Chef Masaharu Morimoto of Iron Chef fame lends his name to the spot, which takes over the old Mannequins Dance Palace. The restaurant will feature dishes from across all of Asia, and will offer guests waterfront dining in a modern setting. Morimoto Asia — Outside View It has also been announced that STK is slated to open in the Landings area of Disney Springs. Expect more news about the modern steakhouse and lounge in 2015. Finally, the long-awaited Food Truck Park has finally materialized in the heart of West Side. The Food Truck Park at Downtown Disney in Orlando While original plans for an elevated walkway seem to have been scaled back for the present, it’s still nice to know that you can predict where at least one of the four Disney Food Trucks will be at any given time. Frozen…EverywhereIf 2014 is remembered for anything, it will have to be the meteoric and phenomenal rise of a certain little animated feature released only about a year ago. That’s right. We are talking about So. Much. Frozen. Elsa and Anna Letting It Go! Indeed, as Disney watchers, we’ve seen our fair share of Disney marketing and promotion. But I think we can all agree that nothing has come close to the hold that Anna, Elsa, and the gang from Arendelle have had over Disney during the entire year. We saw the earliest signs of the craze last Spring, as ornately decorated Frozen-themed Easter Eggs were displayed at Disney’s Grand Floridian Hotel. “Frozen” Egg at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa And no shortage of Frozen Themed Snacks and Cupcakes started to pop up everywhere. If it could be made of sugar, you could bet that sooner or later, it would have Anna or Elsa’s (Or Olaf’s or Sven’s or…) likeness on it. Olaf Cupcake at Disney’s Hollywood Studios Signs that the icy kingdom was here to stay, however, really blossomed just as the weather warmed up in Walt Disney World. That’s when Frozen took over an entire park. Disney’s Hollywood Studios became awash in cool colors. A special Frozen Summer Fun Package was announced for the summer months, and included a sing along, a parade, plus a premium package, which included a Frozen Dessert Party and VIP fireworks viewing. Wandering Oaken’s Trading Post and Frozen Funland opened for the season, and guests could enjoy ice skating and other winter-themed fun in addition to hot cocoa and lots and lots and LOTS of Frozen-themed snacks. Sugar Cookie Ice Cream Sandwich And although the package and Park fun were extended by nearly an extra month, it still didn’t seem to answer all the Frozen fervor out there. And so, as the temperatures dipped from 90 to 80, Disney once again offered a Frozen Holiday Premium Package — this time to coincide with the Winter holidays and the Osborne Family Spectacle of Lights. Beverage Table and Gorgeous Lights at the Frozen Holiday Dessert Party Finally, we saw the whole gang immortalized in gingerbread at Disney’s Contemporary Resort. Because. Well. It had to be done. Contemporary Resort Gingerbread Display Will Frozen fatigue set in anytime soon? We are keeping a watch for the thaw in the film’s appeal in 2015. Bidding Farewell to Beloved Dining Spots and Menu ItemsEvery year, we can expect there to be a shake up in a few Disney restaurants. In 2014, the announcement of restaurant closures brought outcry from fans. And guests also had to adjust to some major menu changes. Early in the year, it was announced that Pollo Campero and Bodie’s All American would be closing at Downtown Disney to make way for new development. That really wasn’t much of a shock; neither of the restaurants, which shared space, had proven to be huge hits. Pollo Campero and Bodie’s All-American But the third tenant in the building, Babycakes NYC, had garnered a HUGE fan base in short order. Babycakes NYC in Downtown Disney The New York-based bakery specializes in gluten-free and vegan baked goods, which also do not contain refined sugar. Outcry has been loud from guests who follow special diets. We couldn’t quite believe a spot that garnered such a fan following would close permanently. And last month, we found out that there may be a replacement in the works. It seems a strong possibility that Erin McKenna’s Bakery Valentine may be opening in the near future! We can’t wait to learn more about this development. Babycakes Sweets and Treats Elsewhere, Disney’s BoardWalk said goodbye to Kouzzina by Cat Cora. The Greek restaurant, which has occupied its premium space for five years, was shuttered in September. We Said Goodbye to Kouzzina This Year But Disney filled its vacancy quickly. More about that to come. Several of Disney’s restaurants also made major menu changes — and you responded with tons of feedback to us! ‘Ohana in Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort met with guest ire when they removed chicken skewers from the dinner offering. At last peek, poultry still wasn’t on offer, except in the form of Honey-Coriander Chicken Wings (which are totally awesome, by the way). And Le Cellier Steakhouse in the Canada Pavilion of Epcot also raised a few eyebrows when they fiddled with their signature Filet. The steak, served with Wild Mushroom Risotta and Truffle Butter Sauce, has a passionate fan base. But earlier this year, the chef started to change the sauce and risotto offered with the steak to reflect seasonal changes. This did not go over well. (Although we tried it, and I gotta tell you, it was magnificent.) Le Cellier Filet with Smoked Bacon, Spinach Risotto, and Parmesan-Butter Sauce But no sooner did we order the new version, take pics, and post a review, than we got word that the beloved old version was back. We were told that it would once again change seasonally. But it hasn’t changed in a while, so we’ll see. Meanwhile, at Tusker House in Disney’s Animal Kingdom, guests can now enjoy a character dining experience for the dinner hour. Goofy Strikes at Pose at Tusker House in Disney’s Animal Kingdom The popular buffet restaurant, which already offered Donald’s Safari Breakfast and Lunch, has added dinner to the line up as well. Welcoming New Dining SpotsWhile in many ways 2014 seems more like a year of development without a ton of new openings, there were still a few new spots that opened their doors this year. January brought us the highly anticipated and long awaited Spice Road Table. Spice Road Table and Shops in the Morocco Pavilion The beautiful new waterside restaurant, located in Epcot’s Morocco Pavilion, opened as a tapas-style eatery, focusing on Mediterranean food and wine. With its primo location along World Showcase Lagoon, it soon became a popular spot for catching Illuminations. As the year closes, Spice Road Table has begun accepting both the Disney Dining Plan and advance dining reservations. As a result, the menu has grown to include a list of entrees, in addition to the small plates it offered from the beginning. Spice Road Table Menu Now Includes Entrees It was a long wait before we saw the next restaurant opening of the year. We told you earlier about the closing of Kouzzina. While many fans of Cat Cora’s Disney outpost were sad to see the doors close, we were happy that at least Disney didn’t take forever opening up its replacement. Before the year drew to a close, Trattoria al Forno began service on Disney’s BoardWalk. Trattoria al Forno Entrance We dined there the very first night it was open, and so far, we’re inclined to have a positive impression of the Italian eatery. Thin Sliced Italian Cured Meats at Trattoria al Forno And since the spot boasts delicious breakfast options as well, we’re pretty confident we’ll be dining here again in the near future. While it’s not a brand new spot, All Star Music’s Intermission Food Court reopened after a lengthy refurbishment. Intermissions Cafe at All Star Music With a newly understated aesthetic and streamlined ordering stations, we think the re-do is a beautiful addition to this value resort. There were also some updates and new openings at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort — more about those later! Big Changes for Animal KingdomIn 2014, we continue to see the winds of change blow over Disney’s Animal Kingdom. And while the full vision of the updates hasn’t been shared yet, there are some things we know for sure, and plenty of speculation to fill in the blanks. The first big change 2014 brought was the relocation of the popular Dawa Bar. Dawa Bar This watering hole has long been a DFB favorite for grabbing a grown up drink and people watching. But in 2014, you’ll find it in a slightly different spot. No matter. It’s still a great place to relax during a day of touring. As we mentioned, there’s also been a bit of speculation about what else may be unfolding behind those construction walls. A new area called Africa Marketplace may provide a brand new counter service location, Harambe Marketplace. Africa Marketplace Concept Art, Courtesy WDWMagic.com The new restaurant will feature multiple ordering windows and will offer African-inspired cuisine. In addition, Pizzafari may soon share its location with a new table service spot, as construction has begun to convert and expand the space. What Will Become of Pizzafari? We are also hearing that the Starbucks location planned for Animal Kingdom is slated to move into Creature Comforts. The new coffee shop could be open as early as Summer 2015. The Year of the Premium ExperienceIf 2014 is notable for anything — besides the complete Frozen domination of Disney (and the world?) — it can be summed up in two little words: Premium. Experience. Everywhere we looked this year, Disney was coming up with new ways to help guests take their vacations straight over the top. While hard ticketed events like Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party and Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party continue to draw big crowds, other Parks started offering their own events. Snow on Main Street at Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party Animal Kingdom is full steam ahead for the coming of Rivers of Light in 2015 and the new area devoted to Avatar. And to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Lion King, guests enjoyed Harambe Nights this summer. With ample food spreads and a Broadway-style performance, the show brought guests something they’d never had a chance to do before — experience Animal Kingdom at night. Stilt Walkers at Harambe Nights! While the show was good and the food was delicious, we loved seeing the Park lit beautifully at night for the first time. (See our reviews of the event here and here.) As we’ve mentioned Disney’s Hollywood Studios spent the better part of the year converting itself into a Frozen playground, with Frozen Summer Fun for all, and the Frozen Premium Package for those willing to pay extra. The package proved so popular that it was extended through the month of September. And beginning in November, Studios offered another Frozen Premium Package in conjunction with the Osborne Family Spectacle of Lights. Frozen Dessert Party Seating Anna and Elsa Cupcakes! In the middle of all of that frigid fun, the Studios also played with an event geared toward those Disney Villain Lovers out there. Villains Unleashed was a hard ticketed event that ran for only one night, and featured lots of evil, Disney style, as the Villains took over the park for the night. Fun food was a feature of the event; no word from Disney whether we’ll see a repeat in the upcoming year. Speaking of Disney Baddies, they regularly make appearances around Halloween at Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party. Lady Tremaine Takes Over Cinderella’s Royal Table But this year, guests who enjoy keeping company with the nefarious bunch could also purchase tickets during MNSSHP for the Villain’s Sinister Soiree. Leave it to Disney to come up with a Premium Event…inside another Premium Event! But since this one took place inside Cinderella Castle, it promised to be something special. But some of the most remarkable premium events were introduced at Epcot. Early in the year, the Park began offering the Sparkling Illuminations Dessert Party. Epcot Sparkling Illuminations Dessert Party We hear from you all the time, and we quite agree — Epcot is a magical place after hours. Well, Disney is listening apparently, and also introduced the After Hours Wind Down this year. Guests could choose from one of four popular spots in Epcot — La Cava del Tequila, Rose & Crown Pub & Dining Room, Spice Road Table, or Tutto Gusto. Small plates at La Cava During the Wind Down Guests would enjoy small plates and drinks during their time there, and could also purchase additional food and drink, in addition to what their admission ticket provided. (You can read our reviews here and here.) Food Sampler During the Rose & Crown Wind Down And just in time for the Epcot Food and Wine Festival, Disney introduced two new options designed to enhance guests’ Food and Wine experience. Guests staying on property could take advantage of the Epcot Food and Wine Festival Premium Package, which included a gift bag of goodies and wine delivered to your room, in addition to special reserved seating in Epcot during the Festival. Premium Package credential, gift card, and themed MagicBand The big draw for many guests was that Cast Members would actually take your order and get your food for you in these special areas, thus eliminating your need for standing in lines. Premium Package area in Italy Pavilion We heard from many of you that this Premium Package made the Festival a much more enjoyable experience for you. Not such a big hit was the other Food and Wine Festival Premium Event, Food and Wine Festival Late Nights LIVE! While this special after hours party promised to have a fun street festival feel, it fell flat for many. Ultimately, scheduled dates for the event were cancelled due to low attendance. Late Night Live Check In We’re anxious to see which, if any, of these Food and Wine premium events return for next year’s Food and Wine Festival. Star Wars Dining at Disney’s Hollywood StudiosWhen Disney’s Hollywood Studios wasn’t celebrating all things Frozen, we could find the Park immersed in another popular universe — Star Wars. And as the popularity of the legendary franchise continues to grow (there’s a new movie due to be released, in case you didn’t know ) Disney offered Star Wars Themed Character Meals for a limited period of time. Storm Trooper Donald at Hollywood & Vine The wildly popular Star Wars dining events roughly coincided with Star Wars Weekends last Spring. Guests could enjoy dinner at the Hollywood & Vine Restaurant, where they’d meet Ewok Chip & Dale, Jedi Mickey, Leia Minnie, Darth Goofy, and/or Stormtrooper Donald. Here’s our review of this fun event. Aunt Berus Blue Milk Ice Cream Breakfast at Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater included interaction with Stormtroopers, Jawa, Greedo, Boba Fett, and Darth Vader. Here’s our guest review of this event. DFB Guest Reviewer Shaun and Miranda with Boba Fett and Darth Vader Based upon their popularity, these events are returning in 2015 and are now available for booking! Accommodations for Guests with Special Needs PilotedDisney has a clear commitment to accommodating the special needs of guests, and we continued to see strides in this direction in 2014. In the area of food allergies, the company is piloting the use of Allergy-Friendly Menus in some of its restaurants to make the ordering process easier for guests who restrict certain foods in their diet. Kona Cafe Tested Allergy-Friendly Menus in 2014 Select locations at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland also began offering braille menus for visually impaired guests in 2014. And we’re hoping the “Allergy Kiosk” that opened in Disney’s Animal Kingdom will replicate itself in other parks. This location offers gluten-free, and allergen-free menu items as well as advice and information about dining with allergies throughout the park. Gardens Kiosk Menu Groundbreaking Updates at Disneyland and Disneyland ParisWhile it seemed like nearly all the big news came out of Walt Disney World in 2014, there were also a few interesting developments in Disneyland — and elsewhere in the Disney Universe. In Disneyland, the ultra premium, members-only Club 33 reopened after a lengthy refurbishment. Court of Angels — The New Club 33 Entrance Major changes to the exterior have closed off the Court of Angels for the exclusive use of Club 33 members and their guests. The interior has also been made over to incorporate Walt Disney’s original vision, according to imagineers, and to add a lounge to the location. And with Chef Andrew Sutton of Napa Rose and Carthay Circle fame at the helm, the menu has been overhauled as well. “Lobster Rockefeller” with Crispy Oysters and Hollandaise Take a look at our photo tour of the new space and our review of our first meal in the new Club 33. Lovely Club 33 Cast Members Also at Disneyland, the Downtown Disney Starbucks made waves this year! Check out some amazing photos here! Starbucks Anaheim! In a move that really demonstrated the DFB motto that Food IS a Theme Park, Disneyland Paris opened a brand new combination attraction and restaurant in 2014! Seriously, I’d like to hop on a plane like, right now, and check this one out. Anyone want to come with? Gusteau’s Sign Soars Over La Place de Rémy and Bistrot Chez Rémy La Place de Rémy opened this Summer at Walt Disney Studios Park. The ride-slash-attraction features a fun romp through the universe of the film Ratatouille — from Remy the Rat’s point of view! The attraction, L’Aventure Totalement Toquée de Rémy, shrinks guests down to rodent size, and they scurry willy-nilly through a course in a rat-shaped car across the rooftops of Paris, before making their way through Gusteau’s kitchen and dining room. Once guests complete their harrowing journey, they’re delivered to their final destination — Bistrot Chez Rémy. L’Aventure Totalement Toquée de Rémy — The New Ratatouille-Themed Attraction at Disneyland Paris All kinds of awesome, yes? Big Changes at the PolynesianOur final big news of the Disney year comes courtesy of one of the Disney World’s iconic and original resorts. In 2014, we found out that there was a complete re-imagining of the beloved resort underway! But instead of modernizing with the changes, they’re taking it old school! The resort has reverted back to its original, opening day name — Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort! Polynesian Village Resort lobby In 2014, we’ve seen a refurbishment of the popular Captain Cook’s, the Poly’s counter service spot. Captain Cook’s And sadly, as a result of the refresh, we had to wave goodbye to 24-hour-a-day Dole Whips. Still, the iconic dessert is still around, with its very own Pineapple Lanai playing host to the treat these days. Pineapple Lanai Pineapple and Vanilla Swirl Dole Whip in Tiki Bowl And we love that Kona Island now offers Hawaiian Shaved Ice, in addition to sushi and coffee! Hawaiian Shaved Ice, cherry and pina colada But the biggest news…the one thing that we can absolutely NOT WAIT FOR . . .Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto is coming to the Polynesian! With more than a passing similarity to Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Room in Disneyland, we are counting the days until the Grog Grotto opens. And it seems like it truly will have a theme all its own, based upon 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Meet Me at Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto! And that’s a wrap! While 2014 seemed to be mostly a transition year as we await the unveiling of some huge changes in the World of Disney, there was enough new and different to keep us on our toes at Disney Food Blog! Now we want to hear from you guys! What were your biggest Disney food news moments during 2014! Leave us a comment and share your thoughts! Here’s to a Happy and Prosperous New Year in 2015! Let’s do lunch… This signature restaurant celebrates the golden age of Hollywood. And since it’s inside a theme park, there’s no need to dress up! Main Dining Room Here are some pictures from my recent lunch at Hollywood Brown Derby. First up: Butternut Squash Soup. Very nice! Butternut Squash Soup Then three words that make me smile — Venison Osso Bucco — and it was good as it sounds or even better. Venison Osso Bucco Followed by pick your own dessert. Dessert Menu You can pick whatever you want you, so my three choices were: two of the chocolate spheres and the milk chocolate creme with mojito concoction. The spheres were good, but the one with mojito was a little odd. Trio of Desserts The mojito was a jelly like center in the middle of the chocolate mousse. Interesting, but not my favorite. 24. We’ve hopped the monorail for another fun check-in at the Contempo Cafe! Learn About:Contempo Cafe Disney World RestaurantsOn a recent jaunt through the Contemporary to view the Frozen Gingerbread Display, I couldn’t resist checking out the pastry case at the Contempo Cafe. More often than not, I usually find a new-to-me cupcake there! Now, at first glance, this one doesn’t seem all that interesting. But let’s dig a little deeper. First off, the cupcakes featuring Mickey Mouse’s likeness at the Contempo in the past have been topped with a Chocolate Mickey — like this Red Velvet Cupcake. This one features a Souvenir Ring. SWAG! The top of the cupcake is crowned with a light Buttercream Frosting, and it’s finished with cute Mickey-shaped Confetti in classic colors. But we know the Contempo well enough at this point to figure there’s a surprise inside. Contempo Cafe’s Mickey Cupcake …And right we are! This cupcake features the same structure of others sold here; the center plays host to some filling. In the midst of that yellow, vanilla-flavored cake, I struck gold. Well, white. Thick, rich buttercream frosting — not that thin stuff on top. Heavenly. Mickey Cupcake — Inside While the flavors might be a little ho-hum for some, I think this is a great classic choice, and I love that you leave with a little ring to remind you of fun Mickey times between trips.
