  7. Flowers are not all that’s blooming at the Epcot Flower and Garden Festival! This event — which is happening right now through May 17 — combines the best of all things: Spring and some truly Awesome Dishes! (For a complete run down of our Must-Eat Treats from this year’s Festival, click here.) The deliciousness comes courtesy of the Outdoor Kitchens. The kiosks, situated throughout World Showcase, provide guests with the opportunity to taste some fresh flavors of the season as well as some regional fare. Smokin’ at the Smokehouse You’ll find fan favorite Smokehouse: Barbecues and Brews located in the America Pavilion, serving up delicious regional barbecue favorites. We love their Pulled Pig Slider with Coleslaw, their new-this-year Smoked Debreziner Sausage, and their Piggylicious Cupcake! But they’ve also introduced a brand new flavor sensation: Burnt Ends Brisket Hash! Beef Brisket Burnt Ends Hash with White Cheddar Fondue and Pickled Jalapeños from the Smokehouse Outdoor Kitchen I was excited to see the dish at the Flower and Garden Festival. Hash is having kind of a moment (it’s that whole retro thing), and we absolutely loved the Nueske’s® Pepper Bacon Hash featured at Farm Fresh during last year’s Epcot Food and Wine Festival. The dish is both delicious and thrifty: it’s a great way to use up those “burnt ends” that result from low and slow smoked brisket. So if you find yourself barbecuing Texas-style — and really, who doesn’t?? — then give this one a try to use up leftovers. Personally, they had me at White Cheddar Fondue. Burnt Ends Brisket Hash with White Cheddar Fondue and Pickled Jalapeño PeppersSmokehouse Outdoor Kitchen Serves 4-6 Ingredients: Pickled Jalapeño Peppers: 1/2 cup thinly sliced white onion 1 cup sliced jalapeño peppers 1 cup white vinegar 3/4 cup water 3 tablespoons sugar 1 tablespoon salt 1 tablespoon black peppercorns 1 dried bay leaf 1 clove garlic 1 teaspoon coriander seeds White Cheddar Cheese Fondue: 1 tablespoon butter 1/4 cup diced onions 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour 1 1/2 cups heavy cream 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon ground white pepper 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg 1/8 teaspoon hot sauce 1 cup shredded aged white cheddar cheese 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese 2 tablespoons diced jalapeño pepper Burnt Ends Brisket Hash: 1 tablespoon canola oil 1 medium white potato, diced 1/2 cup diced white onion 1/4 cup diced celery 1/4 cup diced poblano peppers 2 tablespoons diced jalapeño peppers 3 cups cubed smoked beef brisket 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon black pepper Instructions: For Pickled Jalapeño: 1. Place sliced onions and jalapeños in a medium-sized glass bowl. 2. Combine white vinegar, water, sugar, salt, black peppercorns, bay leaf, garlic, and coriander in a small saucepan. Cook over high heat until mixture boils. 3. Pour brine over onions and jalapeños. Cover and refrigerate at least 24 hours. For White Cheddar Cheese Fondue: 1. Melt butter in medium saucepan over medium heat. Add onion and sauté 5-8 minutes, or until onions are translucent. 2. Add flour, stirring constantly, for 3-5 minutes. Do not allow mixture to brown. Add cream, salt, white pepper and nutmeg. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, 5 minutes, or until simmering. Reduce heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, 20-25 minutes, until mixture is thick and coats the back of a spoon. 3. Add hot sauce. Slowly add cheese, stirring constantly, 3-5 minutes, until cheese melts and is creamy. 4. Add diced jalapeño peppers. Keep warm until ready to serve. For Burnt Ends Brisket Hash: 1. Heat canola oil in a large sauté pan over medium for 5 minutes, or until oil is shimmering. 2. Carefully add potatoes. Cook potatoes over medium heat, stirring occasionally, 6-8 minutes, until potatoes are golden and cooked through. 3. Add remaining vegetables. Cook 3-5 minutes, until softened. Season with salt and pepper. To serve: Evenly divide burnt ends brisket hash among plates. Top with white cheddar cheese fondue. Garnish with pickled jalapeño peppers. So delish! 9. Copenhagen, Denmark is an enchanting seaside city with storybook townhouses, lush parks, ancient cobbled plazas and distinguished culture. It’s no wonder Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen drew much inspiration for his fairytale world from the city of Copenhagen, where he penned “The Little Mermaid.” Not only is Copenhagen the homeport for several of our European voyages this summer, it’s also a stop on our 12-night Northern European sailings. A day in port at this vibrant city gives Disney cruisers the chance for so many adventures! Copenhagen by Canal A popular way to explore Copenhagen is on the water. Our Fairytales Canal Cruise In Copenhagen is a one-of-a-kind boat tour, hosted by a character from one of the famous works of Hans Christian Andersen, where you’ll see sites connected with some of his stories that served as inspiration for Disney films like “The Little Mermaid” and “Frozen.” During this story-filled voyage, you’ll pass by landmarks such as Amalienborg Palace, the statue of The Little Mermaid and the historic canals, all while looking for visual clues and listening to the memorable fairytales. Another fun way to explore the city by canal is our Kayaking in Copenhagen excursion, which takes you on a journey through Frederiksholms and Christianshavn canals and by Nyhavn Canal. You’ll see the oldest part of the city and get up-close views of the Christiansborg Palace, National Museum, Thorvaldsen Museum, the Old Stock Exchange and many other historic landmarks and cityscapes. Exclusive Experiences at Tivoli Gardens The famous Tivoli Gardens is the original park that inspired Walt Disney to build Disneyland park, so its only fitting that we offer experiences here exclusive for Disney cruisers. Set in the heart of Copenhagen, Tivoli features a serene garden and an amusement park with the world’s tallest carousel and thrilling carnival rides. On our signature tour Tivoli Gardens All Inclusive – Behind The Scenes And Taste Of Denmark, you’ll visit behind-the-scenes areas, be the first ones to enter the park, enjoy an exquisite Danish lunch and have all rides included during your day of fun. The Footsteps Of Walt Disney At Tivoli Gardens includes these same perks, plus it gives you the unique opportunity to chat with one of the few employees of Tivoli Gardens that met Walt Disney during a visit in the 1950s. You’ll hear stories about the visit, see areas in the park where Walt visited and delight with many of the original structures that inspired Walt Disney in the design of Disneyland park. We offer several other ways for you to explore the renowned Tivoli Gardens, even a tour just for teens! The Teen Experience at Tivoli Gardens is a great way for cruisers ages 14 to 17 to hang out with their new friends they met onboard while enjoying a thrill-themed tour with Disney Cruise Line youth counselors. Renaissance Castles Of Denmark Those of you looking for a royal experience won’t want to miss our Renaissance Castles Of Denmark tour. It begins with a scenic drive through the countryside to Frederiksborg Castle, considered by many to be the finest example of Danish renaissance architecture and the most magnificent castle in Denmark. Originally built in the early 17th century by King Christian IV, this Renaissance castle now serves as the Danish National Museum of History. Your next stop is at the charming village of Fredensborg where you’ll have the opportunity to photograph the outside of the elegant Fredensborg Palace, the Danish royal family’s summer residence. The royal tour concludes at the seaside town of Elsinore, where you’ll visit the renowned Kronborg Castle, made famous as the Castle of Hamlet in Shakespeare’s play. I hope you’ve enjoyed my series on Port Adventures for our Northern European sailings this summer. Take a look back at my recent posts for more suggestions. 12. Opening May 22 as part of the Disneyland Resort Diamond Celebration, the spectacular new “Paint the Night” parade will feature some of the most innovative floats, vibrant costumes, dazzling special effects, unforgettable music and energetic performances ever presented at Disneyland Resort. The Entertainment team has been working around the clock to get the “Paint the Night” parade ready for its big debut. Today, we’re pleased to offer you a glimpse at one of our performer rehearsals with the Fiber Fairies from the opening unit and the Cars Crew, who join Mack Truck and Lightning McQueen. Once everything comes together, these talented performers will become an integral part of the show. The music for the “Paint the Night” parade, a bit of which can be heard in the video, features the wonderful tune, “When Will I See You Again,” by the band Owl City. The song gives a great, contemporary sound to this new, state-of-the-art nighttime parade. And when you see “Paint the Night” in person, be sure to listen closely. You may just hear some musical surprises woven into the soundtrack! 13. Over the past year, The BOATHOUSE: Great Food, Waterfront Dining, Dream Boats has been hoisting up along the Downtown Disney skyline. The venue, open today, is the first of several new restaurants coming to The Landing, a new neighborhood that will be part of Disney Springs. The BOATHOUSE is an upscale waterfront dining experience showcasing steaks, chops, fresh seafood and a raw bar. Built over the water, the 600 seat nautically themed restaurant also features a display of rare dream boats from the 1930s – 1950s, a beautifully crafted water taxi and a fleet of amphibious autos, called Amphicars. I had the chance to talk with Theron Skees, executive creative director for Walt Disney Imagineering to learn more about how The BOATHOUSE charted its course. Theron shared “It’s been such a team effort between WDI and the Schussler design team; to see Steve’s dream come to life is awesome. It’s been a true collaboration. Guests will experience rooms that represent different time periods in the history of the building, with a focus on a view of the water. Each design element: the height of the restaurant ceiling, the width of the deck, the transparency of the railing, it was all considered so guests would have maximum visibility to the water.” I got to tour The BOATHOUSE recently, and if stunning water views and impeccable attention-to-detail were what they were aiming for, well, they nailed it! Earlier today, Pam Brandon shared details on the menu, so now I’m giving you an early look at what else you can expect at this unique location: Amphicar Rides – Is it a car? A boat? Yes. And yes! Guests can experience the thrill of a Captain’s guided tour aboard a rare Amphicar that drives on land and floats in the water. The $125 price tag includes your own Car Captain and seating for up to three guests. Along the way, you’ll have a great view of Downtown Disney, direct from the water. I tested the Ampihicars last week and had a blast; you literally drive into the lake with a splash – plus, I felt like a celebrity, waving to all the curious guests onshore! This is the only place in the world to ride in these vintage vehicles. Tours are available daily from 10 a.m.-10 p.m., weather permitting, and will be available soon. Italian Water Taxi Cruise – The Venezia, a breathtaking 40-foot wooden Italian Water Taxi also offers a Captain’s guided tour of Downtown Disney; this one is complete with live music, chocolate-covered strawberries and a champagne toast. Tours will be offered hourly from 10 a.m.-10 p.m., weather permitting, starting soon, for individuals and groups of up to 20. The cost is $75 per person or $50 per child under age 13. (Want a more private tour for two? Ask about the Antique Steamboat Tour aboard Lady Rose; the cost is $150 per couple.) “Floating Art” – I knew they were beautiful, but I had no idea I was looking at a multi-million dollar fleet of rare boats. Gathered from museums, private collectors, and boat shows from around the world, be sure to take some time to stroll the marina. Photos are not only allowed, but encouraged, so have your camera handy. Interior Décor – Boat motors mounted on the wall. Trophies from regattas of days gone by. Stunning photography and artwork, some historical, some richly modern. It’s all incredible. But perhaps my favorite décor element is the brand-new boat that the team modified so it could include a dining table. (I’ll just say it now, everyone will want to sit there, me included!) Of course, the true visual hero, even from inside the restaurant, is the water. The good news is that every single table has a great view, so there’s no such thing as a bad seat. Entertainment – Harbor Master festivities take place throughout the day and evening, with flag ceremonies and lively musical performances of beloved bugle songs, performed aboard Lady Rose. Inside, live entertainment takes center stage with a variety of musical styles – during my “sneak peek,” familiar songs were floating through the restaurant. 18. The BOATHOUSE: Great Food, Waterfront Dining, Dream Boats opens today at The Landing at Downtown Disney, the area’s first all-new dining spot featuring spectacular floating artwork: dream boats from the 1930s, ‘40s and ‘50s. But of course it’s the food that we want to talk about, so we caught up with Executive Chef Bob Getchell, who’s been on the team more than five months creating the menu for the expansive restaurant that features three distinctive bars and nautically theme dining rooms. The BOATHOUSE restaurant is managed by the award-winning Gibsons Restaurant Group. “Incredible food with a waterfront view is the focal point,” says Chef Bob. “All of the dining rooms have waterfront views or are on the water.” With 600 seats – 400 indoors, 200 outdoors – there’s not a bad view in the house. The upscale menu focuses on seafood and steaks, upscale cocktails and a solid wine list. You can get anything from a casual basket of fried clams or big butterflied shrimp to “the best Angus beef burgers in town,” says Chef Bob. (And the fries are hand cut.) GalleryThe BOATHOUSE Opens Today at Downtown Disney at Walt Disney World Resort view allLet’s start with the raw bar, serving three to five varieties of oysters on the half shell, colossal wild-caught Baja shrimp cocktail, and the BOATHOUSE lobster cocktail made with a pound-and-a-quarter lobster. Local Anastasia Gold caviar is on the menu from a farm in nearby Pierson, Fla. Even the salads are notable, like the sirloin steak salad with eight ounces of New York strip steak, seared ahi tuna salad with Asian dressing, and the Buffalo chicken salad with Point Reyes blue cheese and spicy pecans. The rotisserie chicken is brined 24 hours and stuffed with citrus and fresh herbs, then slow roasted. Cedar plank salmon roasts in an 875°F oven. And you’ll find dayboat fish coming in fresh, like the Cape Canaveral tripletail that’s on the opening day menu, or Florida wahoo. Back to those steaks – Gibsons sources their meat from small farms in the upper Midwest, and features buttery filet mignon, a 28-ounce Porter house and a 32-ounce long bone rib chop (our favorite). “We’re famous for our big desserts,” says Chef Bob. Like the S’More Baked Alaska made with one-and-a-half gallons of rocky road ice cream with graham cracker crust, topped with a mountain of meringue and marshmallows, chunks of chocolate on the outside, then torched for the s’mores finish. Meant for sharing, of course. Or the Whiskey Caramel Cornbread Cake with fresh berries in a whiskey-honey syrup finished with whisked buttermilk cream and whiskey caramel sauce. But Chef Bob admits his favorite dessert is the ice cream float with grape Nehi soda, poured tableside. Kids’ meals are no afterthought – they’re all homemade, like the Sticks and Stones with chicken breast strips and fish, hand-breaded. Or the Pig in a Blanket wrapped with pretzel dough and baked. “We’ve got something for everyone on the menu,” says Chef Bob. More than a dining experience, The BOATHOUSE immerses guests with waterfront adventures including live music and romantic Captain’s guided tours aboard The Venezia, a beautifully crafted 40-foot wooden Italian Water Taxi, or the 1800s antique steamboat Lady Rose, both featuring champagne toasts and chocolate-covered strawberries. Or head to the water for guided Amphicar tours where you’ll enter the water with a splash for a 20-minute tour. Hours are 11 a.m.-2 a.m. daily. For reservations, stop by The Ship’s Store (adjacent to The BOATHOUSE) or call 407-939-BOAT (2628). 19. CHEERS! COWABUNGA! TULLEEHO! KUNGALOOSH! It’s already time to go back inside (and outside!) Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto and Tiki Terrace at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort! Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto While both the Grotto and Terrace continue in soft openings with an official opening anticipated for late April (when all the sought-after souvenir glasses will be available for guests to take home), these new hot spots remain the talk of the town. On March 28th, when both the Grog Grotto and the Tiki Terrace soft opened for the first day, tales of lines up to 6 hours long were nearly as much of a story as the bars opening themselves. So a common question now is, “What are the wait times like?” How long until you can get past Trader Sam’s door? Grog Grotto Hours of Operation Unsure of what to expect, my husband and I arrived at the Polynesian at 2 pm on a weekday for the 4 pm opening, and no line had started yet (though the bar is open until midnight, after 8 pm only guests 21 and older are permitted). At 3 pm, we decided we’d better stake out our spot, so we went to the inside door of the Grog Grotto, where two Cast Members were waiting. We were told we were the first for the day, and could start the line outside at the metal bench pictured below. The line starts here The next guest arrived at 3:15, and a line in earnest began to form at 3:30 pm. Around 3:50, a Cast Member came outside and gave us all a stamp to show at the door as our proof that we’d been counted in the line. At this time, I counted around 40 people waiting, and when we were let in at 4:00 pm, everyone made it inside to fill up the 51 person capacity. Huzzah! Outdoor entrance into the Trader Sam’s hallway Now, I’m not claiming this will be the case everyday. We clearly arrived early anticipating a wait and were shocked that there wasn’t one, especially during what’s considered a peak time (still in the Spring Break window). Now, I had a friend in town Saturday of the same week. She arrived at Trader Sam’s at 7:30 pm and was given a pager for a 90 minute wait, and folks arriving a while after were looking at a couple hours at least. Pager for Trader Sam’s That’s not altogether surprising, though, since I think we can all anticipate longer lines on weekends for what is sure to be a popular destination for locals as well as vacationers for a long time to come. Okay, logistics, schmogistics! WE’RE IN! It’s time to see a little more of what Trader Sam has in store for his guests… TRADER SAM’S GROG GROTTOAtmosphereYou’ve now entered Trader Sam’s “happy hideaway.” The story of the Grotto is told to us by Skip, Manager of the Jungle Cruise Navigational Company (just click the image below to enlarge). As head salesman of the jungle that we all know and love from the Jungle Cruise, Trader Sam discovered a passion for mixology as an extension of his professional interest in head-shrinking potions. As he traveled the globe for ingredients, he picked up many a souvenir and brought them back to the Grotto. The story of Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto Entering the Grotto for the first time was — for me, at least — overwhelming in the best way possible. While you want to grab a table or a seat at the bar (and lemme tell ya, it’s best to move quickly to get one), it’s difficult to not want to try to take in every bit of the INSANE amount of details and decoration right away. This room is simply the stuff of dreams for fans of Disney detail and history. Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto Before we take in a few of those gems, the basic setup is small and…well, I don’t know if “cozy” is the word. It’s snug, for sure, but somehow not in a bad way. The way everyone is close together, it seems to encourage a party atmosphere and festive mood. Oh, my… where to start? Well, I’ll take a cue from a Jungle Cruise Skipper and point out a few of my favorite details! There’s this one. Postcard And this one. Family Tree East Coast Branch I like this one. Walt Disney Ooookay, so CLEARLY that joke doesn’t play out in writing the same way it does on the Jungle Cruise when your Skipper deadpans pointing out his or her favorite plants . Still, you get the point. There is just a TON of schtick-y stuff crammed into every nook, and you could visit this spot dozens of times and catch something new every time. Artwork and artifacts Tiki statues at the bar Spoon chime Nautical elements are part of the theme as well, and fans of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea will find many reasons to enjoy peeking around. Submarine Helmet Although I have to wonder if Sam really meant to bring this guy back from his travels. Cephalopod Cephalopod tipping the rum One more of the Cephalopod while we’re at it But it’s not just the amazing setting that creates the Trader Sam’s experience. The skippers and bartenders serve up plenty of hijinks along with their concoctions, and so does the room itself! Taking its cue from Disneyland’s Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar, the ordering of certain libations causes a chain reaction. Order a Krakatoa Punch? That changes this calm, serene scene… Krakatoa Volcano … into a fierce eruption! Volcano erupting If a Polynesian Pearl is what you’re after, your bartender has to grab one from this glowing clamshell. Polynesian Pearl clamshell Bartender bringing out Polynesian Pearl Oh, sure, it’s all fun and games in the Grotto… until somebody orders an Uh-Oa! Cast Members lead the chant (“Uh-Oa! Uh-Oa! Uh-Oa!”) alerting the Tiki goddess of Disaster. Tiki goddess of distaser You’re soon to find out, this makes her plenty mad. Tiki goddess of disaster when she’s angry Don’t say we didn’t warn ya! For more of the ordering antics, check out our First Look from opening day of the Grotto! Well, we’ve started talking about drinks, so I guess that means it’s time we get to sippin’, Skipper! Grog Grotto EatsThe primary focus of the menu is a fun selection of Sam’s famous libations. Reading all the puns, jokes, and nods to Disney lore is as much fun as naming your poison, so I’m including pics of the full menu here. While some drinks have made the trip over along with Sam from his Enchanted Tiki Bar in Disneyland, the Polynesian Pearl is a Disney World exclusive. The Polynesian Pearl Polynesian Pearl You can also get an idea for which drinks come in a souvenir glass from the menu drawings (again, please note, not all souvenir glasses are available to take home during the soft open period). Also unique to Disney World is the Tahitian Torch, while the Mosquito Mojito comes to us from Disneyland. Tahitian Torch and Mosquito Mojito Tahitian Torch The Dark & Tropical Stormy is also new, pictured here beside the Tiki Tiki Tiki Tiki Tiki Rum. Dark & Tropical Stormy and Tiki Tiki Tiki Tiki Tiki Rum The Krakatoa Punch is a west coast native (souvenir glass pictured), while the Castaway Crush is an east coast baby. Castaway Crush and Krakatoa Punch Aaah, the much-discussed Nautilus… this souvenir bowl filled with all sortsa high-end spirits will be available as a take-home souvenir after the official opening for a tab of $52. Nautilus The Nautilus in the souvenir display The HippopotoMai-Tai is already a huge hit (“Two Shots of Rum!”), and Rosita’s Margarita joins the ranks, too. While both drinks hail from Disneyland, the HippopotoMai-Tai souvenir glass at Disney World looks more like the new Tiki statue that greets guests in the Polynesian Resort lobby. HippopotoMai-Tai and Rosita’s Margarita New Tiki Statue in Lobby at the Polynesian HippopotoMai-Tai The Shrunken Zombie Head and Uh-Oa! round out the list of specialty cocktails. Shrunken Zombie Head Uh-Oa! The Uh-Oa! comes with little pots of cinnamon on the actual cup that you can use to make sparks in the flaming drink as it’s brought to your table. Note that there are holes in the cup for four straws for sharing. Uh-Oa Sam’s No-Booze Brews offer non-alcoholic concoctions such as the Skipper Sipper, Polynesian Punch, and Schweitzer Falls. Sam’s No-Booze Brews If you’re not into Sam’s mixology, have a look at the beer, wine, and flights. Beer Selection Kona Beer Flight Wine list Rum Flight Though you won’t see the Kungaloosh (well known to fans of Disney World’s former Adventurers Club) on the menu at Disneyland’s Enchanted Tiki Bar, you can order one there (new or old version). However, it’s not available at Disney World. According to one of the bartenders, Trader Sam is “out searching for an authentic Kungaloosh;” so let’s hold on to hope, Adventurers! Food is available inside the Grotto, too. We’ll be delving more into this topic outside at the Tiki Terrace, but here is a peek at the offerings. Grog Grotto Food Menu We couldn’t resist trying a few of the brews that Sam mixed up just for the Grog Grotto, so we started with the Dark & Tropical Stormy: Gosling’s Black Seal Rum, fresh lime juice, Ginger Beer, and Falernum. This first picture is a pan out, because as with every drink here, you’ve gotta check out the straw. Dark & Tropical Stormy Notice the windblown umbrella, too! Dark & Tropical Stormy umbrella Okay, so now here’s one of the actual beverage . And you’ll want to remember this one, because it’s delicious. Dark & Tropical Stormy I wasn’t sure what to expect, since ginger can be so overwhelming. But even as the dominant flavor it ended up great, making this drink both sweet and spicy. You can see from the picture that it’s poured in layers, so you experience different flavors with each sip if you don’t mix it with your gigantic straw. The straight pour of rum lent a nice strength to this one as well. By the way, since the drink prices aren’t listed on the menu, the Dark & Tropical Stormy rang up at $8.00. The Castaway Crush is Leblon Cachaca, Cream of Coconut, pineapple, cinnamon, and fresh lime juice ($10.25). Castaway Crush The flower topper is just gorgeous. Castaway Crush The cream of coconut was right up my alley, though I really didn’t pick up on the cinnamon. It was primarily the coconut and pineapple that came together for a classic tropical vacation drink. The cinnamon was more prominent in our next beverage. This time we went with one you can also get at Disneyland: the Tiki Tiki Tiki Tiki Tiki Rum ($11.50). The ingredients definitely have appeal (this time it’s Pyrat XO Reserve Rum mixed with Cream of Coconut, OJ and pineapple juice, all dusted with cinnamon and nutmeg), but I’ll admit it: I’m a sucker for the name, and a sentimental Adventureland-lovin’ fool. Tiki Tiki Tiki Tiki Tiki Rum Again, the cream of coconut made this milky drink go down smooth… and quickly! The spices and base together reminded me a little of the Horchata Margarita at La Cava del Tequila sans tequila (though the Polynesian Pearl, made with Rumchata, likely has a closer resemblance). The juices here were not as prominent to me. While all three drinks were really enjoyable, the Dark & Tropical Stormy ended up as the strong favorite, not only because of the unique flavor and strength of the drink, but also because it seemed to offer the most bang for the buck, as the ice-based Castaway Crush and Tiki Tiki Tiki Tiki Tiki Rum were almost over before they began due to the amount of ice in the beverages. We grabbed one more before exiting; this time, a No-Booze Brew, the Skipper Sipper. It’s a mix of tropical juices and agave nectar, falerum, mint, and fresh lime juice topped with soda water ($4.79). Skipper Sipper This was quite awesome! I was really surprised at how well the tropical juices and lime were complemented by the mint, and the flavors were strong. I think it’s great that the non-alcoholic drinks appear to have been given as much thought and creativity as the alcoholic cocktails. I would get this again in a heartbeat (even though the best name for a No-Booze Brew still belongs to the Schweitzer Falls). Schweitzer Falls at Trader Sam’s Tiki Bar Altogether refreshed and entertained, it was time to leave the Grotto. Great drinks, an awesome cast, and a truly unique setting filled with a million nods for Disney fans all come together to create an immersive and memorable experience. I can’t wait to go back, and even if there’s a line next time, I won’t mind much at all. TRADER SAM’S TIKI TERRACEAnd now… Welcome to Trader Sam’s outdoor haven, the Tiki Terrace! We strolled outside after exiting the Grotto, and there was no line. It was just a casual walk to the table of our choice. We decided to grab food here since the lighting would be better for pictures. Tiki Terrace Entrance Tiki Terrace Entrance AtmosphereUnlike inside, there is lots of seating available at the Tiki Terrace (it has a capacity for 80 as opposed to the Grotto’s 50). Umbrella-topped tables dominate the scene, but a few folks will enjoy the small surfboard tables. Trader Sam’s seating pre-opening Trader Sam’s seating pre-opening Trader Sam’s seating after opening Surfboard Table The terrace itself is surrounded by — what else? — tikis! Tiki statues surrounding the Terrace Tiki statue Tiki statue Tiki statue Tiki statue Servers — I mean, Skippers! — come to your table, but they bring your brews from the bar in back. Tiki Terrace Bar A waterfall completes the relaxed vibe. Waterfall Waterfall Aside from the physical setting, a huge part of the atmosphere is the music of the islands. Live music at the Tiki Terrace The live music is a wonderful touch, and really lends to that “I’m at the Poly” feel. Music still plays a part even when the musician is on a break. Surfing sounds and Hawaiian tunes pipe through the air. And when “Tiny Bubbles” comes on, keep an eye out for a Skipper sharing his own supply of tiny bubbles! “Tiny Bubbles” “Tiny Bubbles” Speaking of the Skippers… the Cast inside the Grog Grotto gets a lot of attention, as well they should. They are a huge part of the fun, and it wouldn’t be what it is without them. In their own way, though, the outdoor Skippers are just as great, providing a really welcoming, fun, and warm setting for guests and offering great service at the same time. I can’t say enough good things about them. In general, though, it’s all VERY relaxed in sharp contrast to what’s going on indoors. Where the Grog Grotto is wacky, zany, and loud, the Tiki Terrace is as chill as it gets, and I love that both atmospheres are available to experience. Tiki Terrace EatsThe menu at the Tiki Terrace matches the Grotto’s menu with one incredibly cool exception. Tiki Terrace drink menu Tiki Terrace drink menu Beer and wine menu Food menu While most of the hubbub has surrounded the Grotto, the Tiki Terrace has some bragging rights all its own, and among them is this: the Spikey Pineapple. You can’t get this drink inside the Grog Grotto — it’s only outside at the Tiki Terrace. Though we already looked at the menu pages, I’m going to give this one its own closeup. Spikey Pineapple You read that correctly. The Spikey Pineapple is rum blended with Pineapple Soft-serve. Spikey Pineapple That’s Dole Whip, my friends! And the Spikey Pineapple is a huge, cold hurricane glass full of it — in a form meant for sipping! Coming in at $10.25, this is a vacation in a glass: a classic Disney flavor with the soft serve, a hint of rum to add to your vacation pleasure, all topped off with a pineapple wedge, cherry, and an umbrella. It’s cold and refreshing, yummy and whimsical. Well done, Tiki Terrace! Spikey Pineapple topper My husband ordered the Kona Beer Flight: Kona Longboard Island Lager, Kona Fire Rock Pale Ale, and Kona Castaway IPA. Kona Beer Flight The souvenir glasses you see were not available to take home yet, but even when they become available after the official opening, you should know that the cool surfboard they’re sitting on stays with Sam. He’s partial to it. Kona Beer Flight Regarding the IPA specifically, my husband noted that the bold, citrusy hops with a touch of tropical mango and passion fruit were balanced by rich caramel malts, resulting in a clean and crisp finish. Okay. So he totally did NOT say that. But this handy card did! (Click image to enlarge.) Flight descriptions And he definitely thought the IPA was the standout. He enjoyed the option of the flight, but next time he plans to grab just the IPA. Okay, now… onto the EATS! You sure do work up an appetite in the jungle, so we went with four items, starting with the Salmon Oshizushi (pressed sushi). Salmon Oshizushi The small white cup pictured above holds the soy sauce, and you also receive a mango curry sauce for spreading. Salmon Oshizushi This is what I call a great “starter sushi.” It’s simple and not as intimidating as a roll for a sushi beginner (I still consider myself one). And it was great — fresh and flavorful, especially when you pour a little of the soy sauce on your plate so it soaks into the rice, and topped with some of the mango sauce. Next up: the Corn-battered Portuguese Sausages. Corn-battered Portuguese Sausages Served with a curry ketchup (with hints of mustard and sriracha), these are exactly what they appear to be: corn dog sausages, complete with sticks! Corn-battered Portuguese Sausages Corn-battered Portuguese Sausages The dipping sauce was a great spicy accompaniment for this tasty fried snack, and it turns out that corn batter goes almost as well with sausages as with hot dogs. This dish ended up being the table favorite, being that we (my husband and I and my friend who met up with us) all like corn dogs. The Roasted Chicken and Pork Pate Banh Mi Sliders come in a batch of three as well. Roasted Chicken and Pork Pate Banh Mi Sliders Roasted Chicken and Pork Pate Banh Mi Slider The crusty bread that surrounds the meat is a good bread, but there was so much of it compared to the filling that I found it to be overwhelming, with the end result that the sandwiches seemed rather bland, even with the addition of the flavorful pickled vegetables. Of everything we ate, this is the item I will pass on next time. Roasted Chicken and Pork Pate Banh Mi Slider Finally, we tried the Kahlua Pork Tacos with cabbage and pickled vegetables. Kahlua Pork Tacos with Cabbage and Pickled Vegetables Unlike the sliders, where the breading seemed too much, the breaded shells instead stepped up the game for the Pork Tacos. Fried and crunchy on the outside yet still the slightest bit soft inside, they were a terrific addition to the pulled pork, which had a nice barbecue zest. The pickled vegetables here are just a basic slaw, fitting for this dish. Kahlua Pork Tacos with Cabbage and Pickled Vegetables And with that, we wrap up our time at the Tiki Terrace. It’s funny, there have been a lot of changes at the Polynesian Resort since it’s refurbishment over the past several months. As a Disney fan who has long loved the Polynesian, I will admit that a few of the changes have been, for whatever reason, a little hard for me to get used to. There is something about the Tiki Terrace, though, that fits in so well that it feels like it’s been here all along. OverallAfter all the anticipation for Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto, I think it’s living up to the hype, offering a unique, fun, and interactive experience that you’re likely to remember and talk about long after your visit. And while the anticipation surrounding the Tiki Terrace was understandably much less than the Grotto, I found that I enjoyed what it had to offer nearly as much with its own unique, laid-back style. (Plus, you know… Spikey Pineapple!!). If you can make room for a trip to the Polynesian on your next Disney World vacation (and can handle the potential for wait times within your plans), I think you’ll walk away from Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto and the Tiki Terrace with some terrific memories. Just don’t walk away with one of Sam’s artifacts… unless you’re willing to trade two of his heads for one of yours. So here’s hoping you get a chance someday to visit Trader Sam’s!
