  3. Surf’s Up! As part of the Coolest Summer Ever at Walt Disney World Resort, a new summertime dance party inspired by Disney Channel’s upcoming “Teen Beach 2” (sequel to the popular “Teen Beach Movie”) will hit the beach at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon water park. From May 22 through July 5, guests can join in the “Teen Beach 2:” Beach Party at various times throughout day. The fun includes “bikers” and “surfers” who dance and play beach-themed games with guests as a DJ spins remixes of retro tunes. Taking over part of Typhoon Lagoon’s main beach area, guests can participate in relays on the sand, hula hoop spinning, water balloon and beach ball tossing, and the grooviest dance moves this side of Mt. Mayday. Premiering this summer on Disney Channel, “Teen Beach 2″ is set months after surfer sweethearts Mack and Brady return from a summer adventure that transported them into Brady’s favorite 1960s beach party movie, “Wet Side Story,” only to receive a surprise real-world visit from Lela, Tanner, Butchy and their other newfound surfer and biker buddies. Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon is the perfect place to find cool thrills on attractions like “Crush ‘n’ Gusher” and “Humunga Kowabunga,” or you can just “hang 10” in North America’s largest wave pool or the lazy river. With Summer 2015 being the Coolest Summer Ever at Walt Disney World Resort, there’s never been a better time to check out all the water-soaked action at Typhoon Lagoon, including the “Teen Beach 2:” Beach Party. And don’t forget to check out “Teen Beach 2,” coming to Disney Channel this summer. 6. Two years ago when I was new to the Downtown Disney team, my family visited with my then 2-year old niece. One of my first Disney Parks Blog stories was “Big Fun For Little Ones at Downtown Disney at Walt Disney World Resort.” Twenty-four months and two more kids later (my sister now has a 6 month old and an 18 month old, too!), I’ve seen hundreds of little princesses come out of Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, but recently, it was finally MY little princess — my now four-year-old niece, Harper. GalleryPrincess Perfection at Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique at Downtown Disney at Walt Disney World Resort view allAs excited as Harper was about picking out her dress (she went with Princess Anna), she was equally as nervous about having someone brush her curly hair. For a minute, I thought we might have to cancel our appointment, and then we met her Fairy Godmother-in-training, Lydia. She was amazing! Before Harper got into the makeover chair, Lydia did a practice run to show Harper how gently she would brush her curly locks. To Harper’s surprise, it didn’t tug at all. During her princess transformation, Harper got to pick out her hairstyle (I was thrilled that she went with the ever-classy “Fairytale Princess” option), choose her nail polish color, and select her make-up shades. The finishing touches were a shimmering princess jewel for her face, a rhinestone crown for her head, and a pink Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique sash to complete the look. When it was all over, she was invited to sign the “Princess Autograph Book” – she left her signature “H,” taking up a full page. Later that afternoon, when I asked Harper what her favorite part of the day was, she said “being with my Fairy Godmother. I hope she will always be my Fairy Godmother.” I also caught Harper looking at herself in the full length-mirror, doing a twirl, and whispering to herself “today is my princess day” when she thought no one was looking. (This is a true story. And it was as adorable as it sounds.) Finally, on our car ride home, after a full day in the parks, she told me that when she grows up she wants to be a Fairy Godmother, too. Harper left Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique with a princess backback filled with her remaining make-up and polish, which came in handy, because she wore her Princess Anna dress three days in a row! More importantly, she left with memories that will last for years to come and pictures that will always make me smile. Have you taken your princess to Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique? What was your experience like? Please share in the comments below – I hope it was just as magical as ours was! 9. Just announced today, we’re bringing exciting new experiences to the Disney Dream when we transform spaces throughout the ship this fall! Headlining the enhancements are two new interactive youth areas, one themed to Star Wars and another to Disney Infinity. We’re also adding a whimsical sweet shop serving handmade gelato and the ever-popular Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique. Here’s a look at the new spaces and the fun in store for Disney Dream cruisers … Star Wars: Millennium Falcon In Disney’s Oceaneer Club, kids are in for an out-of-this-galaxy experience in a newly themed play, Star Wars: Millennium Falcon, inspired by the spacecraft from the legendary saga. Upon entering the spaceship, younglings will join the Rebel Alliance in the epic battle of good versus evil by assisting with the navigation of this powerful space vehicle. Sitting in the cockpit, children can pilot this super-cool spaceship through hyperspace and trigger lightspeed jumps to different locations around the galaxy. We’ll also offer Star Wars-themed crafts, games and activities in this space. Plus, kids can watch episodes from the new Disney XD animated series, “Star Wars Rebels,” on a large screen or virtually join the rebellion at gaming stations featuring the series’ action-packed adventures. The excitement continues during a shipboard version of the popular Jedi Training Academy experience that invites young Jedi hopefuls – known as “Padawans” – to learn lightsaber moves from a Jedi Master. They can then use the Force and face off in a final test against the evil Darth Vader. Disney Infinity Toy Box Also in the Oceaneer Club, a high-tech interactive space based on the Disney Infinity video game offers more fun for kids. In the Disney Infinity Toy Box area, children can experience a whole new way of playing together with exciting virtual experiences and immersive activities. Customized, on-screen adventures will bring to life characters and stories from across The Walt Disney Company. The complete set of Disney Infinity character figures will be on display for creative inspiration and available for gameplay. Kids visiting this special room – found only on the Disney Dream – will be able to unlock exclusive Disney Cruise Line content that they can continue to enjoy when playing Disney Infinity at home. Special activities will bring the virtual gameplay experience to life in the real world. For example, a life-sized Disney Infinity Base sets the stage where children take the place of character figures for a group gaming experience unlike any other. Lighting up in response to gameplay on a large screen, this interactive floor will allow kids to be immersed in the Toy Box. Vanellope’s Sweets & Treats Handmade gelato and ice cream, an assortment of candy, and delectable novelty treats are some of the deliciousness available for purchase at Vanellope’s Sweets & Treats. Resembling the whimsical candy land of the Sugar Rush race car game in “Wreck-It Ralph,” the sweet shop’s décor features nods to the film, including a race track and checkerboard patterned floor, gas pump-style gumball dispensers, Vanellope’s race car and King Candy’s throne. This specialty store coming to Deck 11 will have two entrances, inside Cabana’s restaurant and outside by the pool deck. Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, coming to Deck 5 midship, will bring to life the storybook fantasies of young guests with pixie-dusted and piratical makeovers. This very special salon will offer aspiring princesses and knights ages three to 12 the chance to transform into royalty with the help of a fairy godmother-in-training. On pirate party night this boutique becomes The Pirates League where swashbuckling pirates of all ages will have the opportunity to unleash their inner buccaneer. Satellite Falls Exclusively for adults, Deck 13 forward will include a new water feature, Satellite Falls, a circular splash pool with benches and a gently falling rain curtain that provides cool comfort. Around this upper deck, adult guests can soak up the sun in loungers or relax in the shade under a canopy. 12. Now that the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival is in full bloom, it reminds us of all there is to love about it. From the whimsical Disney character topiaries and spring-inspired delicious dishes to the expert demonstrations and Garden Rocks Concert Series, where some of the biggest names in music grace the stage. We caught up with Taylor Dayne, who will soon play Garden Rocks for the first time (you may have seen her perform at the Eat to the Beat Concert Series at the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival). Starting with her smash 1987 single “Tell It to My Heart,” it’s hard to top this New York native for infectious dance pop. RUSS: Growing up on Long Island, did you ever imagine all the success you’ve achieved? TAYLOR: As a little kid, I had the vision of “I’m gonna be a rock and roll star,” singing to the radio or every commercial that came on. I was very passionate about working hard. To make music was always my goal and my dream as a very, very young girl. I’m just so blessed. RUSS: We’ve heard you’re a pretty big Disney fan. True? TAYLOR: Ya know, the beautiful thing about Disney is I grew up on the incredible animation. And, of course, on Sunday nights we got to watch Disney on TV. The shows, the movies, the parks—it’s pretty special and amazing. Just a big part of my life. RUSS: Any favorite Disney memories? TAYLOR: For me growing up, it was “it’s a small world.” I made my children (12-year-old twins Levi and Astaria) go on it because the music is just so incredible. RUSS: As for the theme parks, adrenaline rush or milder thrills? TAYLOR: I’m not a drop-from-the-sky kind of girl. No. My son will do that. I stand there and watch while he falls from the sky and does the roller coasters with all the drops. Though I was in to it when I was younger. RUSS: Have a favorite attraction? TAYLOR: I love Soarin’ at Epcot! You’re in the chair and floating. It’s incredible. You’re in that entire experience. You’re moving in it. It’s brilliant. RUSS: Describe your music. TAYLOR: When people ask me that, I say dance, pop, some R&B to a degree. But classic. So if you’re listening to the radio, you might hear “I’ll Always Love You,” “Send Me A Lover” or “Love Will Lead You Back.” I’ve always been incredibly passionate and people feel what I’m singing. Big voice, big passion. RUSS: People are anxious to experience your show at the Flower & Garden Festival for the very first time. What do you have in store? TAYLOR: I hope the fans get an experience so they feel like they’ve been to a show. There’s a beginning, a middle and end. There’s a story. I want them to feel like they got a piece of me. Music is just such a universal language. Why are people so inspired by music? Because it touches them in such a sensorial way. At this point, to a lot of them these songs are the soundtrack of people’s lives. You feel like, “Wow, I remember that.” So yeah, I always look forward to performing at Epcot. It’ll be awesome. RUSS: Thanks so much for your time. One last question. What’s something your fans may not know about you? TAYLOR: I’m a nature freak [laughs]. That’s what I do. I go out there and find my peace. My quiet time. The Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival continues through May 17. Taylor Dayne performs May 1 through 3. All performances take place at the America Gardens Theatre at 5:30, 6:45 and 8 p.m. every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and are included with Epcot admission. 13. Time to ‘fess up: I’d never tried one of the breakfast sandwiches at Main Street Bakery… or at any of the other Disney Starbucks locations. Learn About: Main Street BakeryMagic Kingdom Disney World RestaurantsIt’s not so much that the options aren’t appealing, but I could get the same thing three minutes away from my own home at the Starbucks down the street. And about three minutes down the road from there at the next one. And about four minutes from… well, you get the idea ;). But, no matter what your thoughts are on the availability of Starbucks at the parks, it’s here to stay. And as such, Starbucks Breakfast Sandwiches are a part of the Disney dining scene, so it’s time we grab one for review here on the DFB. Main Street Bakery Participants on the Disney Dining Plan might be especially interested to know that the Breakfast Sandwiches are available on the plan as part of one Quick Service meal entitlement, which also includes your choice of beverage. Main StreetBakery Dining Plan entitlements While I picked up my breakfast sandwich at Main Street Bakery (Magic Kingdom’s Starbucks location), the same offerings are available at the other in-park Starbucks as well: The Trolley Car Cafe at Hollywood Studios, and Epcot’s Fountain View. Choices include a Ham and Swiss Croissant, a Bacon and Gouda Sandwich, a Sausage and Cheddar Biscuit, and a Spinach, Feta, and Cage-free Egg White Wrap. Breakfast sandwich menu I went with the Bacon and Gouda Artisan Breakfast Sandwich because … well, ‘cuz, bacon. Also, the roll looked most appetizing to me of the bread choices. Since there is no seating at the Main Street Bakery as it stands today, anything you order is given to you in to-go fashion. I took my sandwich to the Tomorrowland Terrace area. The restaurant service itself is only open on peak crowd days, so if you catch it on a regular day, the scene often looks like this: Tomorrowland Terrace seating I mentioned not having tried any of these breakfast sandwiches in the parks before. I’ve actually never had one at any Starbucks, preferring pastries, so before we dig in, I’d like to share the lesson I learned: the bag says, “CAUTION: VERY HOT!!” because it’s VERY. HOT. Hot Bag! Caution! With that out of the way, let’s check out the sandwich. Bacon and Gouda Artisan Breakfast Sandwich I’ll start with the good: my instincts were correct on the bread, which I really did enjoy. It was pleasantly soft with just a bit of crunch from the outer crust. Also, I was really pleased with the gouda cheese — not just because it’s tasty, but also the sheer amount of it. You can see it spilling over the sides before you even dig in. Bacon and Gouda Artisan Breakfast Sandwich Open sandwich What was less pleasing: I found the bacon to be limp instead of crispy (which isn’t really an uncommon occurrence in any breakfast sandwich, but worth noting). Also, the portion size itself seemed fairly small. Now, due to the hearty helping of egg inside it was still plenty filling, but it’s here where I find myself “Disney spoiled.” Bacon and Gouda Artisan Breakfast Sandwich cross section Basically, if there is one thing that can rarely be argued against with Disney original food, it’s portion size. Like I said, I had plenty to eat. It’s just difficult not to compare it with something like the Nutella Waffle Sandwich or Ham and Cheese Omelet Waffle Sandwich at Sleepy Hollow, which are downright gigantic (though at about 2 bucks more a pop). Add to that the uniqueness of those sandwiches… well, I’m ultimately giving the edge to those selections. That said, there simply aren’t a ton of counter service breakfast options available at Magic Kingdom, and those at Main Street Bakery do fill a need if you’re not one to start the day with a sweet treat (not that’s there’s anything wrong with having a Dole Whip for breakast… not by a long shot!). So dedicated rope-droppers looking to grab some breakfast may be well served by this option (though, be warned: the first-thing-in-the-morning coffee lines will likely be in full effect). All in all, though, I think I’ve reached the conclusion that a breakfast sandwich and coffee combo is not an altogether bad way to start your day in the Magic Kingdom: pleasantly full, caffeinated, and ready to tackle Space, Thunder, or Splash Mountain… or maybe join the line-up to greet Anna and Elsa at Princess Fairytale Hall. No matter which of those feats you choose, you’re gonna need some nourishment, and this is just one more option to get in the most important meal of the day at Magic Kingdom! 15. Summer is approaching fast in Florida, and that can mean only one thing: grab the tequila. It’s time to enjoy some Margaritas! Arriving This Week! So we’re pretty excited to see that Dockside Margaritas will be opening this week at Downtown Disney Marketplace in Walt Disney World. Or, rather, reopening? Because we all know that the Margarita Bar that was located at Downtown Disney Marketplace before the refurb was a great place to chill during a visit to the shopping and entertainment district. With shady seating on a deck that was situated slightly beneath the crazy of Downtown Disney, it offered a welcome respite; and the waterfront seating provided some comfortable breezes. Seating and Live Music at the Old Spot The new Dockside Margaritas will be fashioned to look like a fruit stand. The location will specialize in fresh tastes of Florida — perfectly in keeping with the rest of Disney Springs. While the old spot offered some interesting drink options, the new spot promises to be even better, and to have a wider variety of choices. Disney Margaritas You’ll still be able to enjoy several different margarita options, and some of the previously available drinks will return, although it appears that the recipes might be freshened up a bit. Here’s the Margarita Menu: Patrón Añejo Margarita – Patrón Barrel Select Añejo Tequila, Grand Marnier, Sweet-and-Sour and fresh Lime JuiceHabanero Lime Margarita – Patrón Silver Tequila, Habanero Lime, fresh Lime Juice and Florida Sugar Cane Simple SyrupSunset Margarita – Casamigos Reposado Tequila, Cointreau, fresh Lime Juice, Sweet-and-Sour and Orange JuiceStrawberry Margarita – Herradura Reposado Tequila and fresh Lime Juice blended with Strawberry PuréeBut if you’re not a margarita lover, there are lots of other cocktails to try — all featuring spirits created right in the Sunshine State! The Florida Citrus Freeze will be a mix of Florida Cane ‘Orlando Orange’ Vodka and Peach Schnapps blended with Orange Purée. We are also happy to see a Rum Runner return to the line up. The updated Orange Grove Rum Runner combines Siesta Key Spiced Rum, Blackberry Brandy, Crème de Banana, and Florida Citrus Juices with a float of Gosling’s 151 Rum. Sounds pretty great! Finally, rum fans will have another drink to choose from. The Sugar Cane Mojito is served up with Siesta Key Silver Rum, Florida Sugar Cane Simple Syrup, fresh Lime Juice, and Mint for a classic, clean flavor. But the really big news is that Dockside Margaritas will also offer several Florida Beers and Wines that we’ve seen showcased at both the Epcot Food and Wine Festival and the Epcot Flower and Garden Festival! We Enjoyed Duke’s as Part of the Farm Fresh Beer Flight at the 2014 Epcot Food and Wine Festival Look for Florida Craft Beers such as Orange Blossom Pilsner, Bold City Duke’s Brown Ale, and Cigar City Jai Alai IPA. Tropical Florida Wines will include Mango Mamma and Key Limen. The opening is scheduled for this Thursday, April 23. Will you be stopping by Dockside Margaritas to sample the Spirit of Florida? 21. In just a few short weeks, we’ll be returning to Alaska where the Disney Wonder will sail through breathtaking scenery and stop at incredible ports of call. This year, we have a selection of brand-new Port Adventures, and I’m so excited to be sharing some of Juneau’s newest excursions with you today! The famous gold rush of the late 1800s put Juneau, Alaska’s capital city, on the map. In fact, the city was named after a prospector named Joseph Juneau, who was one of the first men to strike gold in the city. Your family can have its own gold-seeking adventure on the Family Gold Exploration and the Mendenhall Glacier and Mine Ruin Exploration expeditions. Only Disney cruisers encounter an eccentric prospector mining the hills and join him at his camp. You’ll enjoy the miner’s stories around the fire before leaving with tips of the trade from the prospector himself. On the Family Gold Exploration, your family will also explore the Treadwell Mining District, pan for gold and garnets at the Alaska Gastineau Gold Mine and journey into the abandoned mine at the Maggie Kathleen Tunnel. In the Mendenhall Glacier and Mine Ruin Exploration, you’ll discover even more mine ruins and trails at Douglas Island’s Treadwell Mining District and take in the astonishing sights of the Mendenhall Valley complete with snow-capped mountains and lush green forests. Teens get their own thrilling adventure on the exclusive teen only Canopy and Zip Line Expedition. Disney Cruise Line youth counselors accompany teens for off-road adventure which includes zip lines and two towering sky bridges, ending with an exhilarating rappel from the treetops. Next week, I’ll share with you some of Skagway’s newest Port Adventures, from a campfire breakfast to some friendly competition. Who’s looking forward to kicking off the Alaska season with us? Photographer Tom Bricker recently stopped through the park and got us this great shot just as the Disney Pirate Galleon, Pirates’ Beach and Skull Rock were just opening for the day. Here young guests can explore the caverns of Davy Jones’ Locker and two pirate playgrounds where they can even walk a plank. Gorgeous skies make for great treasure hunting – isn’t that what they say?
