Ah, Min and Bill’s Dockside Diner — this is why I lurve you. So much. Learn About: Min and Bill’s Dockside DinerDisney's Hollywood Studios Disney World RestaurantsMin & Bill’s has introduced yet another killer seasonal milkshake that you and I MUST have. If you’re scratching your head and saying, “Min and Bill’s? What? Where?” — you aren’t alone. It’s not that it’s hidden or anything; you just probably don’t expect much from this boat-as-a-food-destination. But this often-overlooked spot can be a treasure trove of unique eats and drinks. I’ve been a fan of their Frankfurter in a Pretzel Roll (especially the Pretzel Roll part of the equation) forever. Min and Bill’s Dockside Diner at Disney’s Hollywood Studios You probably remember that the last time I was here, I tried the Artisan Mac and Cheese options. The Barbecued Pulled Pork version was a total hit; the Buffalo Chicken Macaroni & Cheese, notsomuch. But the seasonal shake that I tried that day, the Caramel Apple Milkshake, was fantastic. And now, there’s yet another crave-worthy option here. Check out that awesomeness that is the Cinnamon Sweet Churro Milkshake. And just in time too — ’cause I hear that the mercury’s heading up to 90 already in Florida. Cinnamon Sweet Churro Milkshake from Min and Bill’s Dockside Diner With my own trip to the ‘World planned in the not-too-distant future, I’ve already started dreaming about it! Super big thanks to DFB reader Chris Banaszek for sharing his pic of the milkshake with us via Twitter! He also had this to say about it: Whoever came up with the Cinnamon Sweet Churro milkshake at Min and Bill’s deserves a raise. It was delicious! The cinnamon flavor was subtle but still definitely present. The churro was of the mini variety. I think my favorite thing about this one is the whole two-treats-in-one concept. You have the Milkshake, of course. But then you also have a little Churro on the side to dip and swirl into that Whipped Cream. Yummo. You better believe that I’ll be trying this one out for myself in the very, very near future! Now I wanna hear from you guys! What do you have to say about the Cinnamon Sweet Churro Milkshake at Min and Bill’s? Leave a comment and let us know if it has you dreaming about your next Disney World trip! Here at Disney Parks, we’re always looking for new and innovative ways to enhance our storytelling. For example, updating beloved classics allows us to – if I may quote Walt Disney – “keep molding and shaping†the guest experience. As we look forward to celebrating the Disneyland Resort Diamond Celebration, we also have exciting changes coming to two of our classic attractions this spring. First, a Disneyland park favorite is about to get even better as new effects are being added to Matterhorn Bobsleds. Just wait until you see the Abominable Snowman in ways you’ve never seen him before when the attraction reopens in May! Also reopening in May is Peter Pan’s Flight, featuring a reimagined nursery scene and a variety of special effects that will make this classic and beloved attraction come to life in new ways. We’re always looking for ways to add new magic to our Disneyland Resort attractions, and of course we’ll continue to share the details with you here on the Disney Parks Blog. Le Cellier Steakhouse is a top pick for guests who love a good steak – the AAA Candian beef tenderloin with truffle butter sauce is a hands-down favorite, but you also can order pan-seared snapper, free-range chicken and Kurobuta pork at this outstanding restaurant in the Canada Pavilion at Epcot. Now the wine list kicks it up, featuring six of the eight wineries of the “Disney Family of Wines,†and will be the first restaurant at Walt Disney World Resort to feature all eight, says Rick DeCicco, area manager at Le Cellier Steakhouse. The list includes several Reserve vintages. “We’re waiting on Skywalker Vineyards and Gogi, and they are on the way,†says Rick. The diverse collection has a personal connection to the Disney name: an artistic talent, a sense of what makes for good storytelling, quintessential family DNA … all of the wineries display qualities long identified with Walt Disney and The Walt Disney Company, carrying on the Disney legacy and typifying the passion, innovation and quality that the name Disney symbolizes. The wineries: Fess Parker WineryMacMurray RanchSilverado VineyardsLasseter Family WineryGogi (owned by actor Kurt Russell)Frank Family VineyardsChappellet WinerySkywalker VineyardsThe restaurant has debuted a beautiful beverage book dedicated to The Disney Family of Wines, and has taken the service staff through training to educate them about the wines and winemakers. “This has a great impact on our guests since they love a great Disney story,†says Rick. Every leader at Le Cellier also has completed the introductory level course of the Court of Master Sommeliers, a feat worth mentioning (and congratulations!). So, what does Rick suggest? “The Chappellet Signature Cabernet Sauvignon with the filet mignon is by far our most popular offering,†he says. “Or the Frank Family Cabernet Sauvignon with the Angus strip steak and Cabernet butter.†For reservations, visit DisneyWorld.com/dine or call 407-WDW-DINE. Greetings from Epcot! It’s time to see what we can find in some of the shops the World Showcase! Epcot!!! While you can bet on always finding some favorites, like Pocky in Japan, other spots like to change things up regularly. I always love to check out the little bank of shops in Canada. In the past, we’ve discovered some awesome chip varieties. And last year, I was thrilled to tell you (and AJ’s Dad!) about the different Tim Horton beverages they’re now featuring. Today, let’s check out some grab and go sweets from North of the Border! Grab and Go Snacks from the Canada Pavilion in EpcotIf you’re in need of a chocolate fix, consider the Rochef Chocolate Bars. From Quebec, they were available in a couple of different varieties the day I visited. I skipped this one due to the melt factor that day! Rochef Chocolate Next, I found two different sweet popcorn snacks. First, I spied Jakeman’s Maple Popcorn. You’ll often find Maple-flavored snacks in the Canada pavilion, but this was new to me. Jakeman’s Maple Popcorn True, you’re getting a pre-packaged snack that’s been in that bag for an undisclosed amount of time. So if you value something made fresh and on the spot, high tail it over to Karamell-Küche for their version of caramel popcorn. But if maple is your thing, give this fluffy popcorn a try. The subtle maple flavor makes this variety stand out from the sea of “just sweet tasting” caramel popcorn that’s out there. Jakeman’s Maple Popcorn — Out of the Bag If you prefer your popcorn alongside other stuff, then you’ll want to check out Moose Munch. Or should I say Moose Munches — because you have choices! Milk Chocolate and Dark Chocolate varieties are on offer. Okay, okay, so let’s cover the obvious first. Moose Munch is the brain child of gourmet food company Harry & David. And so, it is not technically (not even a little bit) Canadian. So why’s it here? I’m guessing 1) there’s a moose on the package; and 2) it’s delicious. That’s all I can come up with. So we’ll have to suspend our attachment to authenticity with this one. Moose Munch Varieties I decided I had to try some Moose Munch for myself, and I opted for the Milk Chocolate version. Milk Chocolate Moose Munch If the picture on the front doesn’t tell you everything you need to know, check out this “moostastic” description on the back. The Moose Munch Low Down Do not mistake the desiccate packet for seasoning. I don’t think it brings much flavor to the party. It’s just there to keep everything from clumping together, of course. Seems obvious, but this is a warning to not let your kiddos just stick their hands into the bag and take a big mouthful. KIDS! ALWAYS REMOVE THE NOT REALLY FOOD PARTS OF YOUR SNACK BEFORE EATING. Desiccate in Moose Munch And out of the bag, it looks pretty much like what I expected — an assortment of Caramel Corn, Nuts, and Chocolate drizzles. The popcorn isn’t as fluffy as the Jakeman’s popcorn, but since it’s a component here and not the star of the show, I was fine with that. I think I give it a slight edge over the Jakeman’s Maple Popcorn based on the sheer fact that there’s more variety here. Milk Chocolate Moose Munch — Out of the Bag Next, I spied several kinds of Montreal Fudge. There were some intriguing choices; while you had the classic Chocolate and Peanut Butter versions, there were also two others that sounded interesting — Creamy Butter and Coffee Creamy Butter. Montreal Fudge Varieties I decided the Creamy Butter Fudge needed to make the trip back to the hotel room with me. Butter — as the flavor of something? I’m in. Montreal Fudge — Creamy Butter And again, I’m going to anticipate something you’re thinking…am I really going to eat pre-packaged fudge when Disney has fresh stuff at candy counters all over the Resort? Well, that might have swayed me before a few years back, when they stopped making fudge from scratch on the premises. These days, fudge is made by an outside vendor, so it’s technically “pre-packaged,” too. Also, back in my student days in London I used to get a similarly colored and “nondescript” flavored fudge from a bulk sweets vendor at Waterloo Station all the time. I’ve never found anything like it, so I was hoping this might come close. But back to the fudge at hand! While the package is around a third of a pound total weight, the candy comes in individually wrapped portions, ensuring freshness. Montreal Fudge — in the Wrapper Out of its package, you can see that the color resembles peanut butter fudge. The square has sort of a “cut at home” look. Montreal Fudge — Out of the Wrapper As I bit into it, I didn’t get any true “butter” flavor. The overwhelming flavor was…SWEET. Which I guess is what you’re going for with fudge? The texture wasn’t exactly creamy (that’s very hard to do with pre-packaged fudge that’s been sitting on a store shelf for anyone-knows-how-long), but it honestly wasn’t as hard and crystallized as I thought it would be. And, honestly, that’s high praise considering what I was expecting here. While I’m not sure I can recommend buying this, it’s not the worst take-home-treat I’ve found in the parks. So if you’re up for some fudge (the pre-wrapped bites make it more appealing when it comes to portion control) and happen to be in Canada…and your plane is leaving in, like, three hours, so you have to leave the parks NOW to catch it…yeah — that’s when I’d buy it again. Montreal Creamy Butter Fudge — Cross Section Finally, those magical words “sour” and “lemonade” beckoned to me, and I had to answer. Big Foot Sour Berry Lemon Candies looked too good to pass up. Well…maybe “good” isn’t the right adjective here. Intriguing. They looked too intriguing to pass up. Since I love me some sour lemon stuffs. Big Foot Sour Berry Lemonade Candies These are pretty much sour gummy…….feet. Big Foot Candies in the Bag Covered in that sweet and sour sugar, I could taste the berry flavor. They reminded me a bit of Sour Patch Kids, but without all the variety. But with Berry and Lemonade flavors, I was perfectly content. Big Foot Candies — Up Close Your kids will love this one. And they’ll love eating feet. So there you go. Don’t Miss Out on the Best Snacks in Epcot…and Don’t Waste Your Money, Either!Epcot is a snack lovers dream! I love the reflection of Radiator Springs’ two biggest racing fans in the windshield of the car in this photo … Any bets on which car won this race? The natural beauty of Mother Nature + Disney magic = a perfect place to celebrate Earth Day. Of course, you can find it at the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival. We think Earth deserves a whole (extended) weekend! We’ve got lots of ways to appreciate and celebrate with activities, discoveries and more. Here’s are some fresh ways to get your green on, from April 17-22: Three of our new specialty gardens connect families and kids with nature: Nature Rocks, presented by The Nature Conservancy, the Backyard Habitat presented by the National Wildlife Federation and the Purple Martins presented by Audubon Florida. These lush spots will inspire you and your family to spend more time outdoors, and maybe even how to bring a little Disney magic to your home. Disney’s Animal Kingdom Specialists will visit the Festival Center (April 17-19). At the Seas with Nemo & Friends, learn about conservation efforts to protect coral reefs, sea turtles, sharks and the many other amazing creatures that inhabit our oceans (April 22). Check out the sand sculpture that showcases Disneynature’s “Monkey Kingdom” movie at the World Showcase Outpost. Make sure to pick up a kids activity booklet while you’re taking a sand-selfie! On your last visit to Disney’s Animal Kingdom, did you have a chance to visit any of the animal walking trails? Not far down the Pangani Forest Exploration Trail, adventurous guests can step into the Africa Aviary in which 221 birds of 29 different bird species live and thrive! I’m part of a team of four Zoological Managers who have the pleasure of working with our keeper team to care for the different bird species in the aviary and also help delight our guests by introducing them to the amazing world of birds. Earlier this year, the Africa Aviary was renovated and over the past few months, all the birds have been moved back to their newly landscaped home where we can now exhibit much smaller birds. Five new species of birds have joined our Pangani flock — bronze mannikins, cut-throat finches, lavender waxbills, pintail whydah and paradise whydah. All bring a variety of colors, behaviors and songs to the already-thriving avian chorus. They may be small in size, but they can generally be seen in large groups flying through the aviary. The bronze mannikin boasts flecks of shimmery bronze embedded in its feathers. These birds are commonly found in most parts of Africa south of the Sahara Desert. Don’t be frightened by their name — cut-throat finches are actually named due to the males’ red marking or “slash†on their necks! Males are easily distinguishable by this red slash, while females lack the markings. Flocks of these finches stretch across northern Africa from Senegal and Gambia all the way to Sudan. They have even been found as far south as Mozambique. Lavender waxbills are aptly named for the touch of light pearl grey, almost lavender coloring of their feathers. These birds have a unique song that consists of one short, high-pitched burst followed by one long, deeper hum. (Think of a slide whistle.) They are found in central and western Africa—from Senegal, to Cameroon and Chad. Finally, the pintail and paradise whydahs are speckled, tawny colored birds with interesting patterns covering their heads and backs. Males of both species have extremely long black tails in the breeding season which they use in their courtship displays. In the non-breeding season males resemble the browner striped females. These birds reside in southern and east Africa and “parasitize†the nests of other finches—that is, they lay their eggs in the nests of other finches instead of building their own, and they let the host birds raise their young. Look for these birds and the other 24 species in the Africa aviary on your next visit to Disney’s Animal Kingdom. They move quickly, so keep your eyes open! We hope to see you soon! *Disney Parks Blog Exclusive: In the next few months even more species will be added to the aviary. Stay tuned for updates! One of the most charming corners of Disneyland park is Big Thunder Ranch Petting Farm. Here, guests can get up close to some of our four-legged cast members such as donkeys, sheep, horses and — my favorite — the goats. My fellow author, Donna Fisk, has showed some fun glimpses into the lives of these adorable animals, and I wanted to share three of my favorites again with you. Go behind the scenes and watch as Pongo, our senior goat and leader of the herd, received his beauty bath. We’re going for an absolutely classic confection today, so get your sweet tooth ready to bite into a Mickey Caramel Apple at Magic Kingdom’s Big Top Treats! Learn About: Big Top TreatsMagic Kingdom Disney World RestaurantsOf course, Caramel Apples at Disney World don’t just come dressed up as Mickey… and they aren’t only available at Big Top Treats, either. Magic Kingdom’s apple spots also include the Main Street Confectionery. And you can find them at other sweet stops like Sweet Spells at Hollywood Studios or Goofy’s Candy Co. in Downtown Disney. But nothin’ says “Caramel Apple” quite like living life under the Big Top, so that’s where we’re grabbing our apple today! While you just gotta love the classic Mickey Apple, part of the fun of getting any Caramel Apple at Disney World is seeing all the choices up for grabs. Options available vary based on the time of year or nearest holiday. Most recently, Mickey Apples could be found participating in the Wearing o’ the Green for St. Patrick’s Day. St Patty’s Day Mickey Apple The Halloween Caramel Apples are particularly noteworthy every year. Mickey Ghost candy apple Poison Candy Apple Apples may also be tied to a current Disney film release, or even a previous one. Take, for example, the recent Cinderella Coach Apple celebrating the live-action film release. Cinderella Coach Apple Another case in point: the ongoing existence of the Olaf Candy Apple for those who just can’t… ahem… let. it. go. Olaf Candy Apple So, selecting one is pretty rad. What’s the other fun part? Watching the apples come to “fruition†(see what I did there?) before your eyes. You can almost always find Cast Members creating them, and see the apples in their various stages. They all start as green Granny Smiths. Granny Smiths for Candy Apples After receiving their marshmallow ears and being dipped in caramel and chocolate, the Mickey Apples await their red shorts. Mickey Apples pre-shorts And though I can’t resist joking about the Olaf Apple, I do think all of that white chocolate looks pretty incredible on the Olafs waiting for their eyes and signature grins. Olaf Apples in the making Every once in a while you can catch a Caramel Apple sample. But be warned: they offer these for a reason . It’s because they know once you’ve tried even one bite, it’s practically impossible to resist getting an entire apple! Which is what brings us to this moment: digging into our very own Mickey Caramel Apple. Mickey Candy Apple You can request, of course, that Cast Members please slice the apple for you for easier chomping. So be sure to get your photo opps in first! Mickey Apples posed for pictures Notice the marshmallows that were previously “ears” waiting in the to-go carrier . Cast Member slicing the apple You can see how the apple is perfectly sliced for sharing… or not . Sliced Mickey Apple The crisp and slightly tart crunch of the apple goes perfectly with the thick layer of gooey, soft caramel. An additional flavor and crunch boost comes from the sugar glitter and jelly beans that make up Mickey’s famous trousers over the outer chocolate shell. Slices of Mickey Apple This is everything that anyone could possibly want in a snack: sweet, tart, buttery, crispy, gooey, chocolatey… and cute to boot! There is hardly a dessert descriptor that you can’t use when describing a Disney caramel apple, which is exactly what makes it so perfect. And, yes, for a “snack†they are a little pricey (decorated apples run around $9.99), but when you consider the artistry, the quality, and the fact that these are a great option for sharing with a friend or even as a family, it is so very worth it. Enjoying a Disney Caramel Apple is every bit as much a memory in the making as it is a snack. If you’ve never tried one at Disney World, I highly recommend adding one to your “Must-Eat” list on your next Disney vacation! Be Our Guest Restaurant in Disney World’s Magic Kingdom was an overnight sensation, and has stayed at the top of every Disney fans’ must-get-a-reservation list. Learn About: Be Our Guest Restaurant -- LunchMagic Kingdom Disney World RestaurantsThe crazy to get a table has reached epic proportions and has resulted in an unprecedented move: this counter-service-at-lunch spot now offers Advance Dining Reservations. (Previously, Be Our Guest tested lunch Fast Passes. See more information on the move to ADRs here.) Dinner, which continues to be table service, also requires ADRs just as soon as your 180-day window opens. And now, after hearing rumors forever, Be Our Guest just started testing Breakfast Service. We had a chance to try it for ourselves the very first morning it was served! Be Our Guest Restaurant sign I’ve enjoyed all three meals here. The food has been good to great, and the impeccable themeing make this a must-do experience at least once. Scenery Begins Before You Ever Enter the Castle: Gargoyle Light Post and Waterfall But I never like to assume a place continues to be awesome — especially a spot as busy as this. It’s very easy for busy restaurants to nose dive in the quality department, and to trade on their fame alone. And so, it’s become pretty important to me to check in with Be Our Guest periodically to see if I’d still recommend that you fight the good fight to get a table here. And that’s just what I did on a recent lunch visit. Join me, won’t you? AtmosphereBe Our Guest has taken a hybrid approach to service since day one. While dinner is a table service meal, lunch continues to be…not so much counter service, as upscale quick service. But now there’s officially a twist to lunch — you can (and totally, totally should) book an Advance Dining Reservation (ADR for short). So you’ll check in for lunch much the same as you do for dinner. Check In for Be Our Guest Restaurant My, how things have changed. Thanks to ADRs (and the fact that standby waiting often isn’t even available), the routinely crazy-long line for lunch doesn’t start up at the crack of 10AM anymore. Be Our Guest Entrance Wanna see what I mean? Here’s a view from the pre-ADR lunch days. Yikes! Lunch Line at Be Our Guest Restaurant But don’t get any ideas that you’re just going to stroll in for a quick look-see. Nearly the only ticket that will gain you access to Beast’s Castle is an ADR. Entrance Once you’re through the entrance (woo! You made it!), be sure to take in every detail. Be Our Guest is truly a gem, and a stunning example of Disney’s ability to imagine and bring to real life the animated worlds that they’ve created. To your left, you can see just what I mean. Fans of the film will remember the backstory of Beauty and the Beast at the beginning of the film, told through a series of stained glass windows. And in the final scenes of the film, a new window is shown — with Belle and her Prince. You’ll find the scene immortalized in a mosaic at Be Our Guest. Belle and Prince Stained Glass Window But to get your lunch party started, you’ll actually head to your right, down the Gallery. The narrow passageway is lined with shining suits of armor standing at attention — and it’s one of my favorite spots in the restaurant. Enchanted Suits of Armour These Enchanted Suits of Armour whisper, crack jokes, and generally just have a good time. More Enchanted Suits of Armour I’m going to take you a little out of the normal DFB sequence here so that we keep the order of how things work at Be Our Guest. Once you leave the Gallery, you enter the ordering area. And this is why I don’t call Be Our Guest a counter service spot. Here, you can see to the right the Digital Menu Boards that feature lunch items. Digital Menu Boards And directly ahead, there are kiosks. Some are manned with Cast Members who can take your order, and others are available for guests to enter their information directly. I chose the self serve option. Instructions for Ordering From there, the detailed menu took me through each stage of ordering. Here are the adult options. A “1” over the item indicates that it is part of our order. Because I had a FastPass to dine at Be Our Guest (this was before the restaurant changed to ADRs), I pre-ordered, making the ordering process slightly faster once I got there. It was just a matter of confirming our choices. Digital Touchscreen Kiosk Menu — Entrees And here’s a screen which shows you Kids’ Meal options. We had pre-selected a meal for the child in our party as well. Digital Touchscreen Kiosk Menu — Kids’ Meals An additional pop-up menu for the Kids’ Meal gave us the opportunity to change up any beverages or side dishes. Digital Touchscreen Kiosk Menu — Kids’ Picks Options Digital Touchscreen Kiosk Menu — Kids’ Picks Options It’s at this point that you pay. Once payment is taken care of, you either receive a Rose if you’re not using a MagicBand, or your MagicBand acts as your party’s locator. Magic Rose Cast Members kindly instruct you to find a table and have a seat, so that your food can “find” you. For the busy lunch hour, there are three main dining rooms open. Let’s take a quick look around the largest one, the Ballroom. As you enter, Silverware Carts are stationed to each side, so that you can help yourself to the utensils you’ll need. Note that you enjoy real silverware at Be Our Guest! It sounds like a little thing, but anytime I can cut my meat with a real knife instead of a plastic one, it’s a good day! Silverware Cart On the side of the expansive space, there are Self-Serve Drink Dispensers, which are nicely fancied up, befitting their palatial setting. Fountain Drink Dispenser Once again, the themeing here is pitch-perfect. If you’ve ever seen the film, you’ll be blown away by the surroundings. Since we’re eating and not dancing, you do find tables here ;-). Tabletops are durable yet elegant, and chairs are substantially padded. This is where the lunch crowd definitely benefits from the dinner table service setting. Ballroom Seating While you await your food, if you’re sitting in the Ballroom, be sure to take in the details, like the Ceiling and the large Arched Windows at the front of the room. Those babies? Yep, they’re real people. The cherubs depict the children of the imagineers (and some imagineers themselves!) who worked on the project. Ballroom Ceiling Peek out on the nighttime garden scene, and you’ll glimpse gently falling snow. The animation here is the same as it is in the film! Dancing Snow Outside of Be Our Guest Ballroom There are also two other areas to choose from. I’ve enjoyed sitting in the incredibly popular West Wing many times. The West Wing It can be hard to find a seat in here, especially if you’d like to sit near the Enchanted Rose or the Portrait that changes from the Prince to the Beast. The Enchanted Rose and Its Falling Petals Watch Closely — The Prince Morphs into the Beast when Enchanted Rose Petals Fall Remember that the West Wing is under attack by a constant thunderstorm, and the lightning and thunder can get pretty realistic if you have a little one in your party. You can also choose to sit in the Rose Gallery. When the restaurant first opened, this area was available to accommodate larger lunch crowds, but was normally closed for dinner. With Be Our Guest’s continuing popularity, the dining room is now often available for dinner seating as well. Once again, seating here is comfortable, and is centered around the room’s main focal point — a life-size, revolving Music Box, depicting Belle and Beast dancing. Seating in the Rose Gallery The piece is a gift to the couple from Belle’s father, Maurice, given to them on the occasion of their wedding. Belle and Beast Life Size Music Box in the Rose Room While the Rose Gallery isn’t a room that’s taken directly from the film, it’s still a charming space. In addition to the music box, walls are lined with portraits of the film’s characters. Many are depicted in scenes not found in the movie, so it’s fun to take a moment and check out each one. Portrait in the Rose Gallery Faster than you might expect, your food will magically find you, and it will be time to dig in! Let’s take a look at the dishes our party enjoyed during this visit. EatsEven though I’ve experienced it a number of times, I still find Be Our Guest’s delivery at lunch to be a charming experience. Throughout each dining area, busy servers are constantly wheeling these large, beautiful Trolleys, containing guests’ food. Lunch is Served! — Lunch Delivery Trolley When ours arrived, you can see that we had our hands full sorting everything out! Let’s take each dish one at a time to give them each their due. Lunch for the Table I’ve sampled both soups at Be Our Guest — the Potato Leek Soup is packed with flavor, and remains one of my favorites. But I opted for the other choice on this visit — the French Onion Soup. The soup is picture perfect, but it is a bit lighter than other versions I’ve had. I mean, it’s still covered with that rich crust of bubbly cheese, but this version is vegetarian. The broth isn’t beef-based as is traditionally the case, so the flavor is a little lighter than you might expect. That said, it’s quite good. French Onion Soup It had been a while since I had enjoyed the Carved Prime Chuck Roast Beef Sandwich, so I decided to try it this time. (This sandwich changes on the menu regularly, from a steak sandwich back to roast beef.) Piled high with thinly sliced Roast Beef, the sandwich is served warm on a Crusty Baguette with a side of Pommes Frites. Roast Beef Sandwich Lift the bun, and you’ll spy some Horseradish Cream and a generous bed of Arugula. (Disney Chefs love this stuff.) The flavors all work beautifully together on this large sandwich, although a little extra Horseradish Cream wouldn’t hurt. Roast Beef Sandwich — Inside One of my favorite dishes (probably my all-time favorite) at Be Our Guest lunch is the Braised Pork. I am still in awe that you can get a dish like this at lunch time! The meat is rich, tender, and perfectly seasoned. The Mashed Potatoes underneath are a well seasoned accompaniment, and snappy (not at all limp) Green Beans are a delicious way to get a serving of veggies. It’s been perfect every time I’ve enjoyed it. Braised Pork Something new for me was the Tuna Niçoise Salad. This is a gorgeous dish, with all of the traditional components on hand. The Seared Tuna, Hard Poached Eggs, Fingerling Potatoes, and Olives atop a bed of Spring Mix make this salad something hearty and special. I’ll still get that Braised Pork every time, but I’m glad they have this lighter option on the menu. The tuna wasn’t fishy, and the searing offered good flavor. Tuna Niçoise Salad We also ordered the Vegetable Quiche, served with a lightly dressed Side Salad. The Quiche is a flavorful mix of Mushroom, Zucchini, Bell Pepper, Onion, and Chive. It’s a decent, French-inspired meatless dish. Vegetable Quiche Note — if it sounds good to you, you can also enjoy it right now as a breakfast option. Vegetable Quiche — Inside Finally, the littlest member of our crew went for the Mickey Turkey Meatloaf, which was served with Zucchini, Broccoli, and Peach Applesauce. Since we ordered it with all the Mickey Check recommendations, it qualified as a Mickey Check Meal. This was…cute. But the flavor was less than spectacular. While I reeeeeeallly appreciate Disney’s commitment to healthier food, I think they need to keep working on flavor. Because truly, healthy and delicious can exist on the same plate. But they aren’t there yet, in my opinion. Mickey Turkey Meatloaf Our table also decided to sample many of Be Our Guest’s lunch dessert options — all of which are single-serving pastries. We started with one of my favorites — the Master’s Cupcake. Master’s Cupcake Chocolate Sponge Cake is topped and filled with the Grey Stuff — a Cookies and Cream Panna Cotta Mousse. The cupcake itself is on the small side — or rather, it’s regular-sized, and not the jumbo versions you see out and about in the Parks. I like the cake to fillng ratio here. And who are we kidding? It’s just super awesome to go to Be Our Guest and eat Grey Stuff. Master’s Cupcake — Cross Section We also went for the Strawberry Cream Cheese Cupcake, another one of my very favorites. Strawberry Cream Cheese Cupcake Vanilla Sponge encases Strawberry Mousse, and Cream Cheese Icing tops this one. While I would have enjoyed a little more filling, this one was delicious, too. Strawberry Cream Cheese Cupcake — Inside Finally, we tried the new Eclair a l’Orange. Eclair a l’Orange I’m a huge fan of the flavor combo of Chocolate and Orange, and I thought this was a great addition to the dessert menu. It was a little on the small side (as is the case with all of the Be Our Guest desserts), but it’s jam-packed with Orange-Flavored Custard, which was something everyone really appreciated and enjoyed. Eclair a l’Orange — Inside Okay, so we totally needed a nap after that meal. But it was so worth it. OverallBe Our Guest continues to be strong. This place is really something special. We all know — they serve thousands of guests in the space of a week. But every time I’ve visited, the service has been friendly, helpful, and efficient. And the food has been consistently delicious. Part of me would love to tell you not to bother with the hassle of Be Our Guest. After all, it’s no small feat to snag an Advance Dining Reservation here for Lunch or Dinner (though breakfast seems to be a bit more open). But the truth is, I think you do need to eat here. Sure, the atmosphere is spectacular. But it’s so much more than this. This is really terrific food, especially at lunch. In fact, if you aren’t on the Disney Dining Plan, splurge on a big lunch here, and eat lightly for breakfast and dinner. It’s the French way, and you may just save a buck or two. If you haven’t been to Be Our Guest, I encourage you to try it. And if you’re wondering if you should bother with a second (or third or fourth) visit, my answer is…probably yes. It’s gettin’ to be big times again at the ol’ Poly, my friends… Learn About: Kona Island Sushi BarPolynesian Resort Disney World RestaurantsWith the recent addition of the Poly Tiki statue greeting guests above the water structure in the still-relatively-new lobby, and the soft opening of Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto (not to mention the recently open Bora Bora Bungalows), what has been a previously unprecedented level of renovation for a Disney Resort is — at long last — shaping up rather nicely, indeed. Amidst all these huge changes, it can be hard to remember there are plenty of other small things to find and appreciate! Take, for instance, these macadamia pastries I spotted at Kona Island. I loved that even this small dining location was themed appropriately — to the islands! Kona Island Kona Island Bakery Case Just look at the generous amount of Macadamia Nuts covering these Sticky Buns! Sticky Bun with Macadamia Nuts You can also spot them in the center of the Cinnamon Macadamia Nut Buns. Cinnamon Macadamia Nut Bun Pair one of these with some of the Press Pot 100% Kona Coffee available here (brewed to order) and this view of the new and colorful lighting fixtures… Polynesian Village Resort Lobby as viewed from upstairs … well, I can think of worse ways to begin my day, for sure. And with that, I say, Aloha from Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort! Would you like to start the day with one of these macadamia treats? Please let us know with a comment!
