  2. Whenever I’m in need of a trip to the Park that Started It All, but don’t have the time to jet off to California, I love to check out YOUR shots on Disney Food Blog Photo Extravaganza, our Flickr group. If you haven’t had a chance to check it out, head over there! It’s the perfect way to get your extra Disney food fix. Today, I thought I’d share some of our best reader photos of favorite dishes in Disneyland. Disneyland Dole Whip Float Let’s take a closer look at a few of our favorites in this latest installment of our Disney Food Pics of the Week Series! Frites and Mint JulepPhotographer: Michael Greening There are a couple of different spots in Disneyland that I must check out every time I visit, and one of them is Cafe Orleans. A trip just wouldn’t feel complete with at least one Monte Cristo Sandwich, and an order of Frites to share (HA!). (Michael did it right here, with two sauces!) And while you’re at it, you have to try Disneyland’s famed Mint Juleps at least once! A Stop at Cafe Orleans for Frites and a Mint Julep Disneyland Corn DogsPhotographer: Kirsten Marie Hutton There was never a better caption for a pic — “It’s not a trip to Disneyland…” — without a stop at the Corn Dog Truck! Hand-Dipped Corn Dogs are one of the DL treats that is a must- must- must-eat. While I love that there are distinctive options and foods at Disneyland and Walt Disney World, I was super excited when they finally brought Hand-Dipped Corn Dogs to Florida. They are the BEST! Disneyland Corn Dogs! Matterhorn MacaroonPhotographer: Vannah In a world where Macarons — those tasty little French confections — have taken over, I still enjoy their coconut cousin, the Macaroon. And arguably, the best version of this sweet to be found anywhere in the universe is the Matterhorn Macaroon at Disneyland. After all, it’s nearly the same size as the attraction it’s named for — but infinitely better tasting. Matterhorn Macaroon A big thank you to all of you who post food photos in the Disney Food Blog Photo Extravaganza group on Flickr! All images are copyrighted to their photographers. 6. If you’ve sailed with us before, you know that entertaining our adult guests is just as important to us as keeping the little ones happy. One of the ways we do that is through our adult enrichment series, including behind-the-scenes experiences and various seminars, like our beverage tastings. Over the next several weeks, I’ll give you a closer look at some of the sophisticated tastings you can join on your next Disney cruise, starting today with our “From Stem to Stern” wine event where a knowledgeable sommelier teaches you to sip like a pro. During this experience, you’ll sample wines from around the world. Our sommelier will tell you about the history of winemaking and discuss the production method and classification of five different types of wines. If you’re new to wine tasting, this experience is a great introduction to the art of identifying the taste, aroma and character of wine. For the connoisseur, it’s the perfect way to indulge your senses and expand your knowledge. You’ll have the opportunity to savor the flavors of both Old World wines, such as those from France, Italy or Spain, and New World wines from the United States, Argentina, Australia or other regions around the globe. What’s more, you’ll get the chance to speak one-on-one with the Head Sommelier from Palo, our fine dining Italian restaurant, whose knowledge of wine will impress even the most distinguished guests. We offer different beverage tastings on each ship and itinerary, and I look forward to telling you about more of them in the coming weeks. What’s been your favorite beverage tasting with us so far? 7. Walt Disney World is supa fun, but it’s also go-go-go-go. Sometimes ya just gotta relax. Of course, there’re all kinds of ways to accomplish that. But after a long, hard day of Disney touring, I love to head to one of my favorite Disney Bars and Lounges. “Bar” might not be the first word you think of when you picture Mickey Ears and Pixie Dust. But actually, these are some of my favorite spots on property for a number of reasons. And I know you agree, because when I first published the DFB Guide to Walt Disney World Dining, a comprehensive Index of Disney World’s Bars and Lounges was one of our readers’ top requests. Well — we heard you! And I’m happy to let you know that the DFB Guide includes reviews of every Bar and Lounge in Walt Disney World! Let’s dive into the Index and take a closer look at a few. You know my favorites, like Territory Lounge and the Dawa Bar. But today, I want to take you on a tour of a few places you may not have discovered yet. And if you find this information helpful, then be sure to pick up your copy of the Guide today for $4 off using code “2015” right here! Ready to grab a drink? A Niche Menu and Free Beer: The Wave Lounge at Disney’s Contemporary ResortThe Wave…of American Flavors at Disney’s Contemporary resort is a great place to take in a relaxing breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Seldom crowded, the restaurant, located in the quiet back corner of the hotel’s lobby offers a market-inspired menu at a much lower price point than you’ll find at Disney’s suite of signature restaurants. You’ll also find some delicious breakfast options. But in addition to interesting eats, you’ll also find a pretty cool bar and lounge area. The Bar at Disney’s The Wave Restaurant While the food menu is market-driven, the drink menu features some specialties, too. The Wave’s wine list features New World Wines, primarily from the Southern Hemisphere. And nearly all of the wines featured have one thing in common — screwcaps! Sealing wines with screwcaps is a way to battle cork taint, an unfortunate chemical reaction that can ruin a good bottle of wine. So don’t be put off by screwcaps the next time you see one; many quality New World wines, especially those from New Zealand and Australia, are sealed this way. Wines at the Wave Do your tastes run to beer rather than wine? The Wave also features a nice selection of Organic Beers. In fact, if you’re a guest staying at the Contemporary or Bay Lake Towers, you can enjoy a Complimentary Organic Beer Tasting on Saturdays from 3-4PM. (Remember, this is JUST if you’re staying at the resort.) Beer Flight at The Wave Just stopping in for a drink? Try the Beer Flight. The presentation is pretty impressive. A Bar That Switches Things Up: Kona Island Coffee/Sushi BarAnother favorite stop of mine certainly lives up to the name “bar” — but for completely different reasons. In this case, we’re (mostly) trading cocktails for java and some interesting eats. New Tiki Statue in Lobby at the Polynesian! The Polynesian Village Resort has just undergone a major facelift. We’ve welcomed new spots, like the Pineapple Lanai (the resort’s purveyor of Dole Whips these days) as well as the crazy popular Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto (waiting times have been up to 6 hours during its soft opening!) Trader Sam’s Door Sign But with all of the changes, the resort has maintained most of its beloved eateries, including Kona Island Coffee and Sushi Bar. Kona Island Coffee and Sushi Bar It may seem like an odd combo — and it is! But don’t be put off; coffee and sushi aren’t available at the same time. Enjoy delicious coffee and pastries during morning hours. But for the evening hours, this is a great option if sushi is your thing. Kona Island Bakery Case Enjoy made to order sushi, including both rolls and Nigiri-style. And while you can also enjoy a cocktail, wine, or beer here, I love to stop by for another refreshing treat — Hawaiian Shave Ice. Hawaiian Shave Ice It’s so refreshing that I feel like I’m back in the islands when I enjoy it! A Place with Old World Charm: Mizner’s LoungeFinally, let’s look in at one of my favorite spots for refined elegance — Mizner’s Lounge. You’ll find Mizner’s tucked into one end of the Grand Floridian’s second floor. Potted palms and richly decorated carpets hint at the Victorian vibe that the resort is known for. Mizner’s Lounge at the Grand Floridian But don’t expect to hear chamber music as you sit for a spell. When the Grand Floridian Society Orchestra fires up, they’ll be playing jazz! And that’s one reason to love Mizner’s; the draw of live music is so fun and, well, posh. Grand Floridian Society Orchestra I love to meet friends here for a drink and some conversation. But they also offer some delicious dishes, which makes Mizner’s the perfect spot for some interesting appetizers. If you decide to check it out, I definitely recommend the Pork Belly! Pork Belly The preparation may change a bit now and then, but it’s been absolutely delicious every time I’ve visited. 11. You know, for…like…forever, as Disney food fans we’ve all had our eyes on a couple of major food stories: breakfast at Be Our Guest Restaurant and the opening of Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto have received all the attention lately (well, that, and the rumored news of a possible Jungle Cruise Restaurant coming to the Magic Kingdom). So, you may be thinking, “Well, that’s it. I guess all the big Disney food news is over for now.” Not so fast, my friends!! Because now we’re turning our attention to the next presumed restaurant opening in Disney World: The Boathouse, which is anticipated to open sometime in April in Downtown Disney/soon-to-be-Disney-Springs. While we don’t have an exact opening date just yet, we do have some news about one of our favorite Disney performers that may be joining the entertainment line-up. Concept art for The Boathouse — Outside View The Boathouse under construction You see, in addition to food, The Boathouse is also expected to offer a unique variety of entertainment, from live music to various boat-themed attractions such as Italian Water Taxis and guided Amphicar Tours. The Boathouse — Coming Soon! Word has it that Yeeha Bob — regularly seen at Port Orleans Riverside’s River Roost Lounge — may be entertaining guests at The Boathouse as well! According to the terrific Port Orleans fan site, PortOrleans.org, some of Bob’s nights off from the River Roost will be spent bringing his incredible talent to the folks over at The Boathouse! You can also visit Yeeha Bob’s site, where he mentions being tentatively scheduled at The Boathouse. Ye-Haa Bob! Don’t expect, however, the traditional singalong Yeeha Bob show we’ve come to know and love over the years at the River Roost. Rather, Bob Jackson will be bringing some of his terrific instrumental jazz skills to the folks on the Water Taxis, along with accompaniment from a saxophonist. Suffice it to say, if we weren’t excited for The Boathouse before, we sure are now! How about you ? What do you think of the potential for entertainment at the upcoming Boathouse? 12. Earlier this year, we took a backstage look at the Tumble Monkeys from the popular stage show “Festival of the Lion King” at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. In it, we showed you the level of talent and skill that this team of gymnasts uses to add comedic fun into the show. This week, we’re back with a behind-the-scenes look at a different act in the show – the fireknife dancer. This performer adds an element of danger during villain Scar’s song, “Be Prepared.” In reality, the show’s fireknife dancers, including VJ Tiumalu, have studied the art of this traditional Samoan warrior dance for years. For VJ, fireknife is a family tradition. He decided to become a fireknife performer when he was just 5 years old after seeing his father perform in a show. VJ’s uncle even once performed the very part VJ now plays in “Festival of the Lion King.” To learn more, check out the video below. (Spoiler alert: As you’ll see, I’m apparently the most uncoordinated person on the planet and therefore will not be changing my career to fireknife anytime soon). You can see “Festival of the Lion King” at Disney’s Animal Kingdom several times each day. Check your My Disney Experience app for showtimes during your visit. 17. Original music by Academy Award-winning composer Alan Menken headlines new stage show adaptation of Disney animated filmCELEBRATION, Fla. (April 2, 2015) – In November 2015, the endearing characters and captivating music of the animated film “Tangled” will enchant audiences once again, this time as an original stage show spectacular at sea aboard the Disney Magic—the first time the beloved Disney tale has been adapted for the stage. “Tangled: The Musical” will immerse audiences in Rapunzel’s fairytale world through lavish production numbers and spellbinding music. Three new songs created exclusively for this show by Academy Award-winning composer Alan Menken and Grammy Award-winning lyricist Glenn Slater will bring the story to life onstage. The show will stay true to the storyline from the hit feature film—with a few special twists to create a live staged production—featuring favorite characters like Rapunzel, Flynn Rider, the villainous Mother Gothel and Maximus the police horse. The story follows the thrilling adventure of Rapunzel as she escapes the confines of her tower and the clutches of Mother Gothel, who wishes to shield the secret of Rapunzel’s magical golden tresses and royal roots. Rapunzel strikes up an unlikely friendship with the suave, crown-stealing bandit Flynn Rider, and together they face ruffians, thugs and a budding romance on a hair-raising journey filled with classic Disney playfulness and whimsy that will delight audiences of all ages. New Songs Debuting with Film Favorites Acclaimed composer Alan Menken (“The Little Mermaid,” “Beauty and the Beast”) and lyricist Glenn Slater, the prolific pair behind the original soundtrack for “Tangled,” teamed up again to adapt the score and story for the stage. Complementing the score from the film, three new songs weave a delightful combination of narrative, humor and theatrics into the performance. In addition to new melodies, audiences will enjoy live performances of favorite songs from the movie, including “When Will My Life Begin,” “Mother Knows Best,” “I Have a Dream” and the Grammy Award-winning ballad, “I See the Light.” Adapting “Tangled” from Screen to Stage Elaborate costumes, groundbreaking puppetry and stunning set designs transform the 977-seat Walt Disney Theatre into a fanciful Bavarian kingdom, immersing audiences in Rapunzel’s world and making them feel a part of her story. Disney assembled an all-star creative team to develop this extravagant production, with director Gordon Greenberg and choreographer Connor Gallagher joining Menken, Slater and a bevy of top-notch theatrical talent. Master puppet designer Michael Curry, whose extraordinary creations are featured in Disney’s Tony Award-winning musical “The Lion King” on Broadway, is breeding a brand-new pedigree of puppetry in Maximus, the rambunctious police horse whose exaggerated demeanor becomes even more hilarious with the addition of the whinnying puppet performer within. This cleverly constructed character is sure to be the “mane” attraction of every scene he steals. Dazzling costumes created by Tony Award-winning designer Paloma Young will bring the flair and vibrancy of the animated world to life onstage in “Tangled: The Musical.” The townspeople’s bright hues and Rapunzel’s feminine florals are perfectly balanced by the bristly browns of the rugged thugs and royal regalia of the kingdom officials, creating a sensational fusion of colors, patterns and textures. Remarkable set designs by scenic designer Bradley Kaye (Disney’s “Aladdin—A Musical Spectacular”) will transport audiences to storybook locales that include Rapunzel’s tower home, the outlandish Snuggly Duckling tavern, a brightly adorned kingdom town and the resplendent lakeside setting of the iconic floating lanterns scene from the film. New Show Joining Line Up of Exclusive Stage Productions “Tangled: The Musical” complements the line-up of Disney Cruise Line-exclusive live entertainment performed every voyage aboard the Disney Magic, joining “Twice Charmed: An Original Twist on the Cinderella Story” and “Disney Dreams… An Enchanted Classic,” which will feature a new segment from the blockbuster animated hit “Frozen” beginning in summer 2015. “Tangled: The Musical” will premiere during the Nov. 11 four-night Bahamian sailing aboard the Disney Magic. The Disney Magic will sail four-night Bahamas and five-night Western Caribbean cruises from Miami beginning Sept. 30 through the new year.
