Being a Disney World Cast Member has some serious perks. Haunted Mansion in Disney World I used to work at the Haunted Mansion, and not only did I learn SO MUCH about the attraction, I also had the opportunity to enter a lottery system to be able to do Backstage Tours of various other Disney World attractions. And, other Cast Members got to come and experience the Mansion from my perspective! One of my lovely co-workers here at DFB actually got to do a Backstage Tour of the Mansion, and together, we’ve teamed up to bring that tour to you. We’re here to tell you exactly what a behind-the-scenes look at the Haunted Mansion is like! Alright, Honorary Maids and Butlers. Let’s start that tour. Keep in mind that things might have changed since then, so the tours could look different now. This is just what we got to experience! Haunted Mansion First, these Backstage Tours have to take place when no one else is in the park or the ride. (Hello, Safety Key. Sorry. Cast Member joke.) So, the Cast Members on these tours would wake up before the sun to be on their haunting tour as early as 5AM. The empty Mansion is super eery in itself, which makes for a pretty awesome experience. The Haunted Mansion is SO CREEPY when no one is inside! When you enter on one of these tours, you won’t hear the sounds of the rides like you would if it were operating. (No, the ride isn’t operating while you’re on the tour, silly! Disney doesn’t want you to become a permanent resident.) The group on the tour enters the ride where the doom buggies enter the ride, and they set out on foot. Haunted Mansion The lights inside the ride are on, which makes things a lot less scary. There are no glowing eyes, and there are also no surprises. The ride is also surprisingly hilly! The Cast Members on this tour climb a few more hills than they probably expected. Haunted Mansion While the folks don’t get to walk through the entire attraction because of safety reasons and these said hills, something even COOLER happens. The walking tour of the ride itself ends right before the seance scene where you’ll see Madame Leota. Then, you’ll go down BELOW the ride to get a behind-the-scenes look of the iconic ballroom scene. Haunted Mansion From there, you’ll get to see how Disney creates the Pepper’s Ghost effect to make the ballroom come to life with these ghostly friends. The glass panel is just a window, and directly below the ride track are the solid forms of the ghosts, positioned to where they line up properly with the scene you see on the other side of the glass. Bright lights cause the translucent figures to appear as though they’re ghosts in the scene. It’s very cool! ©Disney Seriously, that’s the coolest part of the whole ride. After the ride walkthrough, the Cast Members are actually able to ride the ride a few times without the normal sounds, for an extra spooky time. The Backstage Tours are such a great experience, and something we think every Cast Member should take part in throughout their career with Disney. Hatbox Ghost We’ll be sure to keep you updated with more Disney news, so make sure to follow along for more so that you never miss a thing. Looking for more Cast Member stories from our team? Calling all Disney World Annual Passholders! Disney just announced that a NEW and exclusive souvenir is coming for you SOON! Annual Pass Annual Passholders can take advantage of lots of different perks in Disney World, like exclusive hotel deals, discounts on merchandise and dining, and Passholder-only souvenirs. Soon, a FREE souvenir is coming out for Passholders — here’s what we know so far! Disney occasionally comes out with new Annual Passholder magnets, which are free souvenirs that are distributed in Disney World. We’ve seen lots of different magnet designs, with some featuring Figment, Oswald, Dumbo, and more classic characters. Annual Passholder magnets We usually see a teaser pop up on the Disney World app in the Annual Passholder Buzz section, and today, that’s exactly what happened! We spotted this notification titled “Magnet Magic” that says “Who will be next? How far will your guess go? C’mon, don’t be chicken.” ©Disney When you click on the picture, you’ll see an image of Maui from Moana cross the screen, carrying a sign that says “Passholder Magnet Coming Soon.” ©Disney So we know the new magnet will be themed to Moana, and it’s looking like the character might be Hei Hei, based on Disney’s mysterious message! However, we could also see it featuring Maui or maybe even Moana herself. We’ll just have to wait and see! ©Disney We don’t have any more information about the new magnet yet, but we’ll be watching for a release date to be announced. Usually, these magnets are distributed at the Creations Shop in EPCOT, so we’re guessing that could be the case this time as well, although we don’t know for sure yet. Annual Pass Magnet Distribution for the Oswald Magnet At previous distributions, we’ve had to wait in a long (but fast-moving) line and then present either our Annual Pass card, linked MagicBand or MagicBand+, or MagicMobile along with a government-issued photo ID. Disney World Annual Pass If you miss this new magnet, don’t fret too much. Sometimes Disney re-releases magnets that came out previously! We saw that happen recently with the Oswald and Figment magnets. They were re-released in Disney’s Animal Kingdom for Passholders who missed them the first time around. One popular form of transportation in Disney World is now CLOSED for maintenance, and it’s kind of freaking us out a little bit. Skyliner We’ve known about the Disney Skyliner’s closure for a few months now, so that’s not the weird thing. We stopped by the Skyliner station at Disney’s Hollywood Studios today and discovered that all the gondolas on the Skyliner’s cables are MISSING, and tbh the pictures are seriously spooky. The Disney Skyliner is completely closed right now and will remain closed through January 21st, 2024. Part of the Skyliner will stay closed a little longer, though: Service to and from Disney’s Riviera Resort and EPCOT’s International Gateway will remain closed through January 27th, 2024. Skyliner is CLOSED While the Skyliner is closed, free bus transportation is available, so you can still get everywhere you need to go! Disney bus When we stopped by Disney’s Hollywood Studios this morning, we noticed that the Skyliner gondolas are not only unavailable for guests to use — they’re missing completely! It’s giving dystopian All the gondolas have been removed from the big cables, and it’s giving dystopian vibes. We’re used to this view… Disney Skyliner …so to see NONE of those colorful gondolas in the sky was WEIRD. We’re kind of freaked out. There were a few gondolas inside the Hollywood Studios station, but those were the only ones we could find. You can spot a couple of gondolas in there! Outside the station, there were a couple of signs notifying guests that the Skyliner was closed… Signs about the closure …and providing information about alternative forms of transportation to use instead. Alternative transportation options If you have more questions about how to get where you need to go, there were a couple of helpful Cast Members outside the station as well! Cast Members One of our favorite ways to use the Skyliner is to hop between Hollywood Studios and EPCOT. While that option isn’t available right now, you can use the Park Hopping buses that start running at 10AM each day. You could also travel between the parks via FriendShip boat! The boat ride will likely take around a half hour, as the boat will stop at several hotels along the way. Friendship Boat Note that you can also walk between the two parks, but it’s a pretty long way (about 20 minutes). Walkway to EPCOT Stay tuned to DFB for more updates on all the latest Disney news! Gideon’s Bakehouse shared on its Instagram story that there will be a big celebration for the Disney Springs store’s 3rd anniversary! Disney’s After Hours events are practically a hidden gem in plain sight. It’s going to be really hard to convince us otherwise. These events boast drastically reduced crowds, rare character appearances, most if not all rides and attractions open for enjoyment, and there are even complimentary snacks! Check the map to see what’s open! However, food is the one place with these events where we can get a little squirrely. There are pros and cons to any event that Disney holds and this one point is certainly no exception. We’ve already attended After Hours events this year in Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Magic Kingdom and places to eat (and what was served) seem to be our dividing point. We’ve already weighed whether or not these exclusive after-hours events are worth your time and money to pay to experience the Disney World parks at night. Meeting rare characters and seeing the parks so empty at night really made these experiences top-notch for us. But, we couldn’t help but feel at times there was just one thing that Disney didn’t seem to get quite right. Popcorn Our one complaint that we can take away from these events is the dining options. Take for instance Disney’s Hollywood Studios. When we attended, there weren’t many restaurants (only Anaheim Produce, Milk Stand, Rosie’s All American Cafe, KRNR The Rock Station, and Woody’s Lunch Box) open, however, one of the alternative options was Oga’s Cantina. They accepted walk-ups during the event… Oga’s Cantina in Disney’s Hollywood Studios … and there was food from their menu available for purchase. Our experience at Magic Kingdom wasn’t too different. We were so busy the whole night that it was hard to find time to stop to eat with so much to do. Magic Kingdom Fireworks Thankfully, we ate during one of the 2 fireworks shows, however, if we had arrived at 7PM and specifically for just attending the event, we would have found ourselves in a tricky situation stuck between riding rides and visiting characters, or making time to stop and eat. YUM! Even at that, though, our options would have been very limited to places like Main Street Bakery (which is practically a Starbucks) and Casey’s Corner. These events do start late (they are named “After Hours”, right?), and the real attraction for most people is rides with low wait times, so it may be that Disney just doesn’t expect enough people to stop and eat to justify keeping a lot of restaurants only. We get it — especially since you do get free snacks during the event. But if you’re planning for a late dinner at Disney World, we just want to warn you not to count on that. Our best advice is to eat before you head to the park for After Hours! Be sure to keep following us at Disney Food Blog for more Disney news and updates! Some new eats have made their way to Disneyland! California Adventure in Disneyland Disney California Adventure (DCA) has some of the best food in all of the Disneyland Resort, especially with the festivals that are constantly switching things up. Smokejumpers Grill is the latest DCA restaurant to have seasonal offerings on its menu, and today, we’re headed to get a taste. Let’s go! Smokejumpers Grill offers hearty American quick-service eats like burgers and chicken sandwiches, as well as some dessert options, like their famous seasonal shakes. You’ll find this eatery right next to Grizzly Peak near the park entrance. Today, we’re headed to try their latest seasonal shake: the Raspberry Cheesecake Shake. Smokejumpers Grill menu — featuring the Raspberry Cheesecake Shake! This shake is $9.79, and is topped with whipped cream, cheesecake bites, and fresh raspberries — a simple concoction that’s a bit more tame than some of the other shake offerings in the past. When we got our hands on the shake, it looked pretty simple. If we didn’t know any better, and if there weren’t fresh raspberries on top of all that whipped cream, we’d think it was a regular ol’ strawberry milkshake because of the color. However, the TASTE is what’s important. The shake! As for the taste, our feelings are a bit mixed. When it came to the raspberry portion, we were very satisfied. The raspberry flavor was pleasant and mild — not too overpowering. It was light and refreshing. It was the cheesecake bites that didn’t really work for us. We found that the cheesecake didn’t pack much of a flavor and got soggy quickly, rather than holding its shape and texture in the shake. By the time we got it, the shake was basically a mushy glob of raspberry and cream cheese sludge. We wanted to like it So… should you try this shake? If raspberry is your go-to flavor, give it a try! We really did like the raspberry portion of this drink, and who knows? You might have a better experience with the cheesecake than we did! However, if you don’t like raspberries or cheesecake, or prefer a more put-together dessert drink with bolder flavors, we recommend trying something else on the menu. We don’t think it’s worth it, but YOU might! Speaking of the menu, the other seasonal offerings include a Citrus-Melon Punch and Sparkling Blackberry Lemonade. Alcoholic offerings include a Melon Cooler and a Sparkling Blackberry Margarita, as well as a few seltzer and beer options. There are plenty of other options to try. There are some Disney World problems that you may never see coming. Magic Kingdom Fireworks There are a lot of new problems coming in 2024, some nasty problems we’re all dreading, and then there are some you won’t know are problems until they happen to you. What do we mean? Here’s a prime example. You know how they always say to watch your feet when you’re on those moving walkways and escalators? Well, this is exactly why. Crocs…stuck in the escalator Yes. Those are Crocs, stuck in the escalator at The Land Pavilion in EPCOT! Which means the entire thing is closed down and can’t run. The entire escalator is closed So if you see the escalator closed, there’s a high probability this is the reason why. To avoid your Crocs meeting the same fate, REALLY pay attention when you are on the escalators and make sure your feet aren’t too close to the edge. It’s also important to watch your kids closely as well! Walkway Closed Technically, there’s a rule that Crocs are not allowed at escalators in Disney World — there are signs at Disney Springs that say so. Your best bet is to take the stairs or elevator if you’re wearing Crocs. No Crocs allowed! What other disasters can you run into in Disney World? If Rise of the Resistance could be closed, but don’t worry, there’s a way to help avoid that. Rise of the Resistance We’re always here to help you avoid Disney disasters, so stay tuned to DFB! Disney World snacks can dictate our daily park plans. We go to a park to find, buy, and devour snacks. Magic Kingdom You might say “We’re here for the snacks” and it would be totally true. And now that the Disney Dining Plan(DDP) has made a comeback, we’ve been in full snack-searching mode. We have been looking at all the snack offerings all around Disney World (but we’re not snacked out yet!) and we’re on the hunt for that little, pink DDP symbol. It’s been three years since we last saw the Dining Plan and since then lots of new items have surfaced. So we’re taking you on a hunt of your own for all these 10 new (since the last time we could use the DDP) snacks that count toward the Dining Plan. There are TONS of new snacks all around Disney World, but not all of them qualify to use the Dining Plan. Before we begin our look at these 10 new snacks that are eligible, let’s take a look at some basic Disney Dining Plan info and how it works. First of all, there are two types of Dining Plans you can purchase for your trip — the Quick Service Dining Plan and the Standard Dining Plan. Here’s what you get for each of them per day of your visit that you pay for: Quick Service Dining Plan 2 Quick-Service Meals 1 Snack/Nonalcoholic Drink 1 Resort-Refillable Drink Mug Standard Disney Dining Plan 1 Quick-Service Meal 1 Table-Service Meal 1 Snack/Nonalcoholic Drink 1 Resort-Refillable Drink Mug Tamu Tamu You get all the snacks and meals preloaded to your account, so if you’re staying for 4 nights, you could eat all 4 snacks on the first day if you wanted to. When you’re looking for snacks that qualify, be sure to look for the DDP symbol on the menu or indication on the Mobile Order app. Yep, you can use your Disney World app to mobile order snacks and still use the Dining Plan! DDP symbols Ok, now that you have a solid understanding of the Disney Dining Plan (if you still have questions, check out one of the several links above!), let’s talk about these NEW and AMAZING snacks that you can use your plan for! Cookie Pies The Main Street Confectionery in Magic Kingdom has been around for a long time, but we have noticed TONS of new snacks offered here. Peanut Butter Cookie Pie There is a huge list of snacks that qualify for the Dining Plan here, but we wanted to highlight a couple of them. First, the cookie pies here are fantastic. There is the Peanut Butter Cookie Pie with M&M’s Candies is large and delicious. It’s a great use of a snack credit if you’re looking for a sweet snack! Brownie Pie Also, at the Main Street Confectionery is the Brownie Pie with M&M’s Candies. Brownie Pie This is another delicious and large sweet treat. Fans of brownies and chocolate candies would really enjoy this snack! Blondie Twix Pie Another goodie at the Main Street Confectionery is the Blondie Twix Pie! Blondie Twix Pie You’re probably seeing a trend, here. Big, sweet, cookie-style desserts are sort of our go-to. This blondie is so good and definitely worth a snack credit. Liege Waffle You can find regular, old liege waffles at Connections Café, but they do not compare to this beauty on the other side at Connections Eatery. Liege Waffle This liege waffle is topped with strawberries, whipped cream, and a chocolate drizzle. It’s like Valentine’s Day every day of the year. We will certainly grab one with a snack credit, and so should you! It’s $5.49, so not the most expensive snack to use a credit on, but totally worth it. Apple Pie Gelato Shake If you’re at Connections Eatery, you might as well try the Apple Pie Gelato Shake! Apple Pie Gelato Shake This is $7.49 or one snack credit (and it’s worth the snack credit). Our reporter team gave this a huge thumbs up, so we recommend giving it a try! Karamell Kuche Flight To be fair, the Karamell Kuche Flight is not entirely new as a menu offering. However, the flavors are always new! Holiday Caramel Flight The Werther’s shop in EPCOT at the Germany pavilion rotates the flavors offered in the flight regularly. So grabbing one of these with a snack credit could be new every time. Caramel Cookie Dough Treat And while we’re talking about Karamell Kuche, check out this caramel cookie dough treat that’s offered there. Caramel Cookie Dough It’s small, but mighty (and tasty). For $5.29, this is a great way to spend a snack credit. We may be biased, but we don’t think there is a bad option at the Werther’s shop. Merry Unbirthday Cupcake Every day except one is your unbirthday, so you should celebrate! Merry Unbirthday Cupcake At the Cheshire Café in Magic Kingdom, you can find yourself a celebratory cupcake that is so good. The cupcake is $6.10 out of pocket, so it’s not the best deal you’ll find for a snack credit, but we really like it! DOLE Whip Pineapple Hard Cider Float We had to go to Tamu Tamu ourselves to confirm this to be true. Dole Whip Pineapple Hard Cider Float The Disney World website says that a snack credit can be used for a snack or nonalcoholic beverage — they don’t say you can’t get an alcoholic snack! The menu proves that this boozy Dole whip can in fact be bought with a snack credit (we also asked a Cast Member). Cast Member confirmed Pineapple Dole Whip Hard Cider Float will be DDP eligible That’s a $14 snack credit — talk about a good deal! EPCOT Festival Booth Snacks EPCOT has festivals throughout the year and many of the booths offer treats that are eligible for snack credits. Crazy Chocolate Funnel Cake Sandwich The 2024 Festival of the Arts is currently ongoing, and we found that the best bang for your credit is this tasty Crazy Chocolate Funnel Cake at the Funnel Cake stand in the American Adventure pavilion. It is $12, so it’s a lot to pay out of pocket for, but it’s a really good snack credit deal! Watch for the DDP symbols at the festival booths! There are TONS of new options all year long at the festivals that count for the DDP, just watch for those symbols! Festival of the Arts We hope you enjoy one (or all) of these snacks! They are delicious and even better now that you can use the Dining Plan to buy them. For more Disney Dining Plan updates, keep following DFB! If you thought the Disney World parks were prone to all sorts of changes, we need to talk about Disney Springs. Disney Springs Over the past year, we’ve witnessed several store closures and even a few moves. From Alex and Ani to The Art of Shaving, Disney Springs has been no stranger to change and goodbyes. Now, though, something NEW is coming, and we think some of you will be stoked. Disney Springs shared on Facebook that Vineyard Vines will soon arrive! The new store will be located in Disney Springs Town Center, which is where you can find other popular shopping spots like Sephora, Anthropologie, Free People, and Lululemon. ©Disney Springs Vineyard Vines hasn’t ever been part of the lineup at Disney Springs, and we think it’ll be a great addition! If you aren’t familiar with the brand, it’s most recognizable by its pink whale logo. The brand sells clothing and accessories for men, women, children, and pets! ©Disney Springs and Vineyard Vines It’s inspired by the area in which it was founded — Martha’s Vineyard — so it’s super preppy and will have you feeling like it’s summer year-round. ©Vineyard Vines When we learn more about the shop’s arrival, we’ll be sure to let you know. Have you ever been to Disney World when the CHEERLEADERS are there? Disney World Huge cheerleading competitions are held at Disney World annually … we’re talking ginormous events, and thousands of cheerleaders running around the parks and hotels. It’s BIG FUN … for the cheer teams. But it may not seem quite as exciting if the hotel you chose for your trip is taken over by cheer practice in the common areas or cheerleaders walking the halls in groups late at night or early in the morning. Now, this is NO shade on cheerleaders! I was a high school cheerleaders myself — albeit at a tiny school for math nerds known for its chess team not its athletics, but hey, I earned that letter on my sweater! The U.S. All-Star Federation and the International All-Star Federation come together to hold The Cheerleading Worlds at ESPN Wide World of Sports each spring. In 2024, this competition is being held April 26th through 29th. And that means, there will be LOTS of cheerleaders staying at Disney World hotels — particularly the value resorts: All-Star Movies All-Star Music All-Star Sports Pop Century See this courtyard area at All-Star Sports resort? There will be lots of cheer practice happening here. So, if you’re planning a visit during this time and you can avoid these hotels, we would recommend it! Otherwise, you may want to put in a request with your resort to be placed in a room away from large groups if at all possible. Rooms facing courtyards and pools might also be less desirable than at other times of the year! All Star Sports Resort And if you’re planning ahead for future years, here’s a look at the dates of upcoming cheer competitions at Disney World: April 25th to 28th, 2025 April 24th to 27th, 2026 April 23rd to 26th, 2027 April 21st to 24th, 2028 April 27th to 30th, 2029 Disney’s Pop Century Resort Keep following DFB for the latest Disney news! While closures around Disney World can be quite the bummer if you aren’t expecting to stumble upon them, they’re a pretty important part of operating a theme park and keeping it in tip-top shape. Closures are important! Throughout the year, rides, pools, and even forms of transportation will temporarily close so that Disney can perform routine maintenance and clean up procedures to keep everything running smoothly and looking magical and brand new. An important closure is taking place starting TOMORROW, January 16th, and you need to be aware if you’re headed to Disney World this month! Starting January 16th, 2024, the Disney World Skyliner will close for refurbishment. We learned of this closure back in October, but that was so long ago that we felt a reminder was important! Skyliner Don’t worry, though — this closure won’t be too lengthy. The Skyliner is set to re-open on January 27th. Well, completely re-open, that is. The areas between Pop Century/Art of Animation to the Caribbean Beach Resort and Caribbean Beach Resort to Hollywood Studios will be closed from January 16th through January 21st, 2024. Service between Disney’s Riviera Resort and EPCOT’s International Gateway will stay closed through January 27th, 2024, so the EPCOT line will be unavailable until then. Don’t worry, though. Disney will provide free bus transportation to all these areas while the Skyliner is down. You won’t be trapped! Disney World Skyliner So… what happens during refurbs like these? Well, sometimes we’ll see new Skyliner wraps once it’s back open, but most of the time, there are only pretty boring but pretty important updates like maintaining the cables, gondolas, and sometimes touching up paint. Often, we can’t even tell the updates have taken place at all — which is a good sign, usually. Disney’s Skyliner We’ll continue to keep you updated with more Disney news, so make sure to follow along for more so that you never miss a thing. A super popular ride is temporarily CLOSING tomorrow in Magic Kingdom! Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is one of the “mountain” roller coasters in Disney World, and it’s definitely a fan-favorite attraction. Disney will temporarily close this Frontierland ride for some updates and refurbishments, starting tomorrow, January 16th. Here’s what you need to know about the closure! Disney has announced that Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will be closed from January 16th through January 20th. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad The ride is showing opening hours once again starting on January 21st. ©Disney Disney says that this closure is for “regularly scheduled maintenance.” We’ve seen several popular rides close for maintenance recently, including Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster in Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Kali River Rapids in Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Both of those closures, however, are planned to last multiple months, so Big Thunder got off easy compared to those two.
