Disney just loves keeping us on our toes — and the progress over at Tiana’s Bayou Adventure in Magic Kingdom has kept us occupied for quite a while now. ©Disney We’ve seen plenty of concept art, had our first sneak peek inside the ride, and recently learned new details about what we can expect in terms of animatronics and Splash Mountain easter eggs! Not only that, but we’ve noticed quite a few updates being added to the ride in Magic Kingdom — and we think the ride may be closer to opening than Disney may be letting on! We’ve been keeping up with the progress at Tiana’s Bayou Adventure ever since the ride was first announced, and from what we’ve seen things seem to be moving along quite nicely over in Disney World! New details were just revealed about the ride, and we’ve also seen our first look inside. With construction seemingly going smoothly, we think this Magic Kingdom ride could open sooner rather than later — and we’ve got the updates to prove it. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is set to debut in Disney World and Disneyland later this year, and will pick up where the story leaves off — more specifically, “after the final kiss, and [riders can] join Princess Tiana and Louis on a musical adventure – featuring some of the powerful music from the film – as they prepare for their first-ever Mardi Gras performance.” Construction in the queue Tiana gets to live out her dream of owning and operating her own restaurant, Tiana’s Palace. During a Mardi Gras celebration, she realizes an ingredient is missing and sends us as riders on a mission to help her find it as she journeys through the bayou. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure Concept Art ©Disney The ride is projected to open in late 2024 in both Disney World and Disneyland — at least according to the original announcement. But, we’ve been seeing signs that Tiana’s could open even earlier than anticipated — at least in Disney World. But, in a recent blog post, Disney removed the word “late” and stated that the ride is just opening in 2024. With Disney typically being pretty specific about their use of language, we can’t help but think this may be a good sign. @Disney As far as the ride construction goes, well, we think we’ve spotted some good signs over there too. Disney recently started adding all the incredible and lush foliage to the exterior of the ride which we had previously seen in the concept art. It’s hard to tell there was ever even another ride here with how much they’ve added! Look at how LUSH it all is! You can see in the concept art just how many trees, lilypads, and other foliage appear, and it looks like we’re getting pretty darn close to that on the outside. ©Disney Seriously — just check out this close-up. It’s not just greenery that has been added, but beautiful, colorful flowers as well. You might also notice something interesting on the righthand side of the opening where the drop is… can you spot them? Look closely! Foliage and lanterns Yep, some bottles are hanging up there! More specifically, they’re lanterns — but not just any lanterns. Lanterns! They’re Mama Odie’s lanterns! You may remember Mama Odie from The Princess and the Frog, and Disney has paid a nod to her by adding these lanterns to the ride. Disney shared way back in 2022 what this will eventually look like — all those glowing lanterns will be hanging above the area right before the big drop. THE BIG DROP — Attraction Model Plus, we’ve already seen concept art of what this Mama Odie scene might look like right before the drop — here she is surrounded by colorful lanterns made of bottles just like the ones we’ve now spotted in Magic Kingdom. ©Disney According to Disney, this scene is where Mama Odie is joking with guests after showing off her magic. “The two-hundred-year-old Bayou Fairy Godmother, with her eccentric belongings and ‘seeing eye snake,’ Juju, is comically eccentric, yet wise and all-knowing, throughout the adventure.” And, Jennifer Lewis, who voiced Mama Odie in The Princess and the Frog, is reprising her role for the ride. ©Disney We also recently learned that several Tiana audio-animatronics will be used throughout the ride! It’ll be like Tiana is actually talking to us and taking us along on this journey. These animatronics will feature the same advanced tech that the Frozen Ever After attraction uses in Hong Kong Disneyland. @Disney So, while we may not have an official opening date for Tiana’s Bayou Adventure just yet, we can’t help but think Disney may be speeding things up. Fans weren’t too happy about how long the EPCOT Transformation has taken or how long it took to build TRON (though the pandemic-related closures likely had a hand in those delays), so it’s possible they’re trying to underpromise and overdeliver with Tiana’s. Progress on Tiana’s Bayou Adventure Either way, we’ll be here to keep up with every change — no matter how big or small it may appear from the outside! Another day, another closure in Disney World. Disney’s Boardwalk Inn We’ve said goodbye to several stores in Disney Springs over the past year and even dealt with continued restaurant closures, too. Of course, when one door closes another one opens, and this time — the door is closing on a restaurant at Disney’s BoardWalk Inn and we’ve got all the details. Big River Grille and Brewing Works at Disney’s BoardWalk Inn will be permanently closing on January 22nd, 2024. January 21st will be the restaurant’s last day of operation. Big River Grille The restaurant confirmed the news and the Disney World website has been updated to show no available opening times from January 22nd and beyond. Big River Grille Big River Grille wasn’t a standout or super popular restaurant for fans, but it was a solid sports bar and place to grab a beer and a bite to eat on the BoardWalk. We enjoyed the meals we had there for the most part, they just weren’t anything different than what you might find at your local sports bar. Located on Disney’s BoardWalk, this was a great spot for some late-night eats after a round of sing-a-longs at Jellyrolls, or hit this spot after watching the nighttime spectacular at EPCOT (Big River Grille is within walking distance from the park). Disney’s Boardwalk Resort While we’re sad to see Big River Grille go, we are excited that this means something new will likely be on the way soon. We can’t wait to see what’s next for this space. A lot of the team members here at DFB have worked at Disney World in the past, and some of us are set on working there again after retirement! Cast Members! After all, working the Most Magical Place on Earth is just that: magical! However, we were wandering through EPCOT during the Festival of the Arts when we stumbled across a job we DON’T want to do. Let’s talk about it! We decided on our little meander throughout the park that we don’t want to be a chalk artist. Not that that job was in the cards for us anyway, but just so we’re clear. We won’t be taking up sidewalk chalk art. Chalk art in 2022 Don’t get us wrong. We LOVE the chalk art. The artists are so kind and talented, too. There’s just one problem. We have attachment issues. And attachment issues are one thing that you can’t really have if you’re gonna be a sidewalk chalk artist at EPCOT. Yeah… we’re talking about the rain. Nate Baranowski is a chalk artist at EPCOT, and he showed the result of what happens when it rains in the middle of working on a piece. ©Nate Baranowski on Instagram Yeah… Bad News Barry. It still looks super cool but we can’t imagine doing all of that hard work just to have it washed away by the rain before it’s even complete. So… what do the artists do to prevent this? Well, if they can catch it in time, they’ll put ponchos or tarps over their work. Chalk art covered! This has been a very rainy and cold January so far, so it seems like the artists might have to do this pretty often… Those poor artists Well, if you’re gonna be a chalk artist at EPCOT, you’ve gotta be tough! We can’t wait to check out even more stunning artwork at this year’s Festival, which runs until February 19th. Make sure to follow along so that you never miss a thing and are always in the loop! The Dining Plan is back in Disney World, and there’s a lot to talk about! Mickey Bar! The Disney Dining Plan is a way to pre-pay for your meals during your vacation, allotting each traveler a certain number of meal credits and snack credits per day of their trip. We’ve seen some big changes with the plans available since they came back at the beginning of 2024, but perhaps one of the most important things to talk about is Disney World’s FREE dining deal — what does it look like this year and will we get more deals? Dining Plan Overview Let’s start this out with an overview of the Dining Plan. There are two different Dining Plan options when booking your trip — the Disney Quick Service Dining Plan and the Disney Standard Dining Plan. The quick service plan comes with two quick service credits and a snack credit per person, per day, while the standard plan comes with a table service credit, a quick service credit, and a snack credit per person, per day. Both plans also give each person one refillable mug for their resort stay. Chili Cheese Fries at Casey’s Corner The Quick Service Dining Plan costs $57.01 per adult per night for ages 10 and up and $23.83 per child per night for ages 3 to 9. The Standard Dining Plan costs $94.28 per adult per night for ages 10 and up and $29.69 per child per night for ages 3 to 9. Totchos at Woody’s Lunch Box To get the most value for your money, you’ll want to be the type of person who orders the more expensive menu items, especially when it comes to those snack credits! But what’s one way to make sure you get your money’s worth? By booking a free dining deal, of course! Free Dining in 2024 “Free dining” is a Disney World Dining Plan promotion that we’ve seen pop up several times in the past. In previous years, it was used to convince people to come to Disney World during the off-season by offering a free Dining Plan with their package. When the Dining Plan returned in 2024, a NEW free dining deal was announced along with it. Contemporary The current free dining offer notes that Disney+ subscribers can get the Disney Dining Plan for FREE on select dates when they purchase a non-discounted 4-night, 4-day Walt Disney Travel Company package. This package must include a room at a select Disney hotel and a Park Hopper theme park ticket. Riviera Resort This new deal is available for trips most nights from July 1st to September 30th, 2024. This is the first time we’ve had a free dining offer in 4 years. This is also the first time we’ve seen a Disney+ subscriber-exclusive free dining deal. Wilderness Lodge With this deal being so specific…will Disney World decide to offer MORE free dining in 2024? Could More Free Dining Come This Year? Taking it back to 2019, Disney World had not one, but TWO free dining deals in one year. The first applied to dates in the summer and early fall, while the second applied to winter travel dates. Then, before the parks closed due to the pandemic, there was set to be another deal available in summer 2020. Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Eats Free dining used to motivate people to come to the parks in the off-season, but we really started to see this deal shift before the pandemic. The summer isn’t exactly a “slow” time for Disney World since so many people are out of school during that time. So now, the goal of free dining just seems to be to get as many people to the parks as possible. The Plaza Restaurant full spread With that in mind, it’s possible that Disney could release another free dining deal later this year, although nothing is certain. If it follows the 2019 trend, a wintertime deal could be released later in the summer (that one was announced in July 2019). It’s also possible that Disney could expand its current free dining deal to be less exclusive, so that people who aren’t Disney+ subscribers can take advantage. Columbia Harbour House Either way, this is entirely conjecture based on what we’ve seen in the past. We’ll be interested to see what deals Disney World announces in the future! Things are changing a lot in Disney World these days! @Disney The EPCOT transformation is nearly complete, several hotels are getting big makeovers, and the old Splash Mountain is getting converted into Tiana’s Bayou Adventure in Magic Kingdom. Outside of the ride being closed, that last one hasn’t affected park traffic too much…until now! Even though Splash Mountain closed, we’ve still been able to get to the Frontierland train station, despite it being located directly above the queue for the flume ride. But recently, Disney started construction on part of the train station and it CHANGES how you board the Walt Disney World Railroad. Frontierland Train Station entrance closed Previously, the entrance to the train station was located on the right side, with riders taking a steep staircase to get to the top. Now, that staircase is blocked off, so you’ll need to use the temporary entrance on the left side staircase instead. When you arrive, you should see signs directing you down the correct path. The entrance moved The wheelchair/ECV/stroller ramp is still available on the far right side for those who need it. And currently, the train is still operating as usual One other major change that happened recently is that the Frontierland restrooms have been blocked. These restrooms are located in the exit queue of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure and are temporarily closed due to construction on the queue area. For the nearest available bathrooms, head to Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn & Cafe. The bathrooms are closed! We’ll keep you updated if anything else changes with this construction project. We all know that parking at the airport can be a pain. Orlando International Airport signage From the trouble of finding a spot to paying the fees to hauling your luggage back and forth from the car, sometimes it’s just more headache than its worth. Parking at the Orlando International Airport is no different, but it looks like they’re hoping to improve the process soon! Spectrum News 13 reports that the Orlando International Airport (MCO) is looking to install Parking Guidance System technology in their parking structures. This is similar to systems in place at Disney Springs, where digital boards display the number of spots available in a given lot, and red and green lights above the spots let you know which ones are empty or occupied. Disney Springs parking “The value of this procurement is estimated at $9,600,000 for software, hardware, installation, commissioning, warranty, and seven years of support and maintenance,” the airport said in a release. “The contract is scheduled to be awarded in June 2024.” Terminal C at the Orlando International Airport The Greater Orlando Aviation Authority (GOAA) Board also recently approved a contract with Allied Universal Security Service for Curbside Traffic Management Services. This would add personnel to keep traffic flows going at Terminal A, B, and C curbs. Back in October, GOAA CEO Kevin Thibault hinted at these changes as part of an initiative to improve passenger experiences at MCO. World of Color — One specifically honors Disney’s 100th anniversary through fantastic water and lighting effects paired with famous Disney music and sound bites. Preparing for your next Disney World trip is no easy feat. EPCOT Between booking your hotel, deciding which parks to visit, which restaurants to eat at, and which rides you’re going on — it can be a lot to keep up with. Throw a ride closure into the mix and you’ve got even more to plan for. If you’re heading to Disney World later this year, we’ve got another ride closure to warn you about! It looks like another Disney World ride may be undergoing a bit of a refresh later this year — we spotted another closure on the Disney World website! Frozen Ever After in EPCOT will be closed from November 2nd through November 6th, 2024. ©Disney Of course, you can still get your Frozen fix by meeting Anna and Elsa in the Norway Pavilion or by seeing For the First Time in Forever: A Frozen Sing-Along Celebration in Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Frozen Ever After This is a relatively short closure, but it’s still something to consider and plan for if you’ll be visiting EPCOT during this time. If you’ve got little Frozen fans in your party, you might want to warn them ahead of time that they won’t get to experience this ride. Frozen Ever After is one of the most popular rides in EPCOT and often boasts hours-long waits, which means those people normally waiting in line will have to go somewhere else in the park. You can likely expect a bit more congestion thanks to this closure! We’ve got GREAT news for fans of iconic Disneyland rides! Disneyland One of the most beloved rides in Disneyland Park is “it’s a small world,” which takes guests on “the happiest cruise that ever sailed.” The ride features nearly 300 animatronic dolls that represent children from cultures all across the world. Those dolls serenade visitors with what might be the catchiest song ever; You only have to ride it once to have that song stuck in your head all day! This ride was closed for a couple of weeks as Disney refurbished the attraction, but now it’s finally reopening soon! “it’s a small world” will reopen in Disneyland Park tomorrow, on January 19th! Opening times are posted for the 19th from 8AM through 12AM. ©Disney The ride was closed starting on January 8th, so the closure lasted not quite two weeks. When a ride closes for refurbishment, Disney usually refreshes the paint job, updates anything that needs to be changed, and checks on the mechanics of the attraction. We can expect this ride to be running smoothly for a while after its touch-ups. “it’s a small world” This ride isn’t the only one getting some changes or a refresh! Some other ride and restaurant closures are currently impacting Disneyland, including the following: Mark Twain Riverboat –– Closed on September 17th; Anticipated Reopening Date: February 3rd, 2024 Astro Orbitor — Closed November 27th; Anticipated Reopening Date: Not yet known Blue Bayou Restaurant — Closed January 7th, 2024; Anticipated Reopening Date: January 20th Haunted Mansion — Closing on January 22nd to accommodate work on an expansion of the queue! We’ve been watching the progress on Tiana’s Bayou Adventure for nearly a year now in Disney World. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure Splash Mountain closed in 2023 to make way for the new Princess and the Frog-themed log flume ride, and construction has been moving along quickly. We’ve seen sneak peeks at what the ride will look like, from concept art to scale models, but now we’ve got one more hint about what we’ll find inside! Recently, NOLA.com did an interview with Imagineers working on the project at Disney World, taking a walkthrough of the attraction. During that walkthrough, Executive Creative Director of Walt Disney Imagineering Ted Robledo confirmed that the ride will feature some nods to its predecessor. Queue areas In addition to using the old ride vehicles and the same ride track, Robledo hinted that there would be a few “subtle nods” to Splash Mountain throughout Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. Much of the interior ride architecture has been retained, including rocks and boulders, but the vegetation has and is being replaced with flora and fauna native to New Orleans. ©Disney We’ll be interested to see what these Splash Mountain Easter eggs are when the ride officially opens as Tiana’s Bayou Adventure! Currently, it’s scheduled for an opening sometime this year, although no date has been specified yet. ©Disney Stay tuned to DFB for more news and updates about the things coming to Disney World. One Disney Imagineer just received an honor that has only ever been awarded to one other person at The Walt Disney Company, and that other person was Walt Disney himself. ©Disney Lanny Smoot is the mastermind behind several incredible special effects at the Disney theme parks, and now he has officially been inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame! At a ceremony held at Walt Disney Imagineering’s campus in Glendale, California, the National Inventors Hall of Fame announced the 2024 inductees, including Imagineer and Disney Research Fellow Lanny Smoot. Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences, said, “As Disney’s most prolific inventor, Lanny continues to amaze all of us with his artistic ingenuity, technical expertise, and endless imagination.” ©Disney Walt Disney is the only other person from the company to receive this honor. Disney was honored posthumously for his work on the multiplane camera. Smoot has created incredible effects that you’ll spot in the theme parks, like making Madame Leota float in the Haunted Mansion attraction. He also was the creator of the extendable lightsaber used by Disney Entertainment and the Magic Playfloor you can find on Disney cruise ships. Madame Leota Smoot chose one patent to list for his induction: His work on “Where’s the Fire?” at Innoventions, which was previously located in EPCOT. Disney said that “this interactive exhibit aimed to educate guests on fire safety and the importance of fire prevention through engaging challenges. Guests were able to ‘shine’ a special flashlight device on the walls of a house and through the magic of Lanny’s technology, they were able to spot fire dangers and learn to prevent these from happening in the future.” ©Disney Smoot commented on his induction: “As a life-long inventor, I am excited, delighted, and humbled to be inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. To be included alongside my childhood hero, Thomas Edison, and my lifelong role model, Jim West — the inventor of the electret microphone, is both exciting and humbling. And as someone who’s had the privilege of working at The Walt Disney Company, it’s especially meaningful to know that Walt Disney himself is also an inductee.” ©Disney In total, Smoot has over a hundred patents to his name, with 74 of them being created while he’s been with Disney. He’s not finished inventing, yet! Right now, he’s working on something called the HoloTile Floor, which is going to be “the world’s first, and only, multi-person, omni-directional, modular, expandable, treadmill floor, where any number of people can have a shared virtual reality experience, walk an unlimited distance in any direction, but never collide or walk off its surface.” ©Disney Disney is hoping that this floor has VR and gaming applications, and they might use them in the theme parks as well! In addition, it could be used on a stage, where performers could dance and move in new ways or stage sets and props could be reconfigured easily. ©Disney Get a look at this new invention here: Stay tuned to DFB for more updates on the latest Disney news! Big changes are happening in Disney parks around the globe, but we’re particularly excited about one, in particular. ©Disney Tiana’s Bayou Adventure will be making its way to both Disney World and Disneyland sometime this year. We’ve been keeping up with the progress from coast to coast, but the heart of this ride is in New Orleans — just like the original source material. One Imagineer just dished some new details about Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, and we’re thinking it’s time to dig in! Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is set to debut in Disney World and Disneyland later this year, and we couldn’t be more excited to learn every single detail and inspiration behind this ride! The Princess and the Frog-themed ride will pick up where the story leaves off — more specifically, “after the final kiss, and [riders can] join Princess Tiana and Louis on a musical adventure – featuring some of the powerful music from the film – as they prepare for their first-ever Mardi Gras performance.” ©Disney Yep, that’s right — Tiana gets to live out her dream of owning and operating her own restaurant, Tiana’s Palace. During a Mardi Gras celebration, she realizes an ingredient is missing and sends us as riders on a mission to help her find it as she journeys through the bayou. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure Concept Art ©Disney Disney shared the ride’s backstory a while back, but Imagineer Ted Robledo recently spilled the beignets on much more! First, we learned that several Tiana audio-animatronics will be used throughout the ride! Disney uses these animatronics to convey stories to viewers in a more life-like, immersive way. It’ll be like Tiana is actually talking to us and taking us along on this journey. These animatronics will feature the same advanced tech that the Frozen Ever After attraction uses in Hong Kong Disneyland. ©Disney We also heard that we’d be getting a Louis animatronic on the ride a while ago, but Robledo shared that not only will we see Louis, but we’ll also see more animatronics that will represent what Robledo called “the critters.” There will even be a swamp animal band! Disney is apparently just using cutouts to test these parts of the ride so they can see just how things will look from a rider standpoint before the official animatronics arrive. Louis animatronic ©Disney In addition, Imagineers have been focusing on the use of a New Orleans soundscape to make visitors feel like they’re actually there. Outside the barn area, there will be speakers playing “reimagined New Orleans classics performed by an assortment of local musicians gathered by multiple Grammy winner Terence Blanchard.” And, as we previously learned, there’ll be the sweet smell of beignets drifting through the air to just add to the effects. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure It was incredibly important for Disney to include the art and culture of New Orleans to make the ride come to life. Robledo said, “The city as a place is as important as a character. The story reacts to the place. We’re starting to hint at that in the queue, to try to craft that love letter to New Orleans in every way possible.” The new water tower looks great! Up until you enter the main part of the ride itself, it’ll resemble Splash Mountain. The queue and loading area are very similar to Splash from what Robledo has said. The track is also the same, and you’ll board the same log flumes that appeared in Splash Mountain. The interior architecture of Splash Mountain — including the rocks and the boulders — still remains. And, we might even be getting some more Easter Eggs and hidden nods to Splash! Robledo shared that more additions have been and would continue to be added to reference Splash Mountain, including a pair of stone arches spanning the flume. Tiana’s construction We’ll still get a whole makeover in terms of theming, though! Tiana’s story will begin as soon as you enter the courtyard at the beginning of the queue, which will eventually lead to the large mural on the barn — and Robledo said the barn will house the main offices for Tiana’s Foods. If you’re worried about the iconic Splash Mountain drop, have no fear. You’ll still plummet five stories and get absolutely soaked along the way! But make sure you take a look around so you can see the native Louisiana foliage that was brought in to help immerse you. This is where you’ll see the Tiana animatronics, as well as Louis and the critter band. From Robledo’s comments, it seems that an animatronic will be there around nearly every bend — guiding you along in the story. Progress on Tiana’s Bayou Adventure Robledo also shared that the tree trunk that once sat atop Splash Mountain had to be removed. This was supposedly done to allow for more real estate to “fit the added show magic.” He promises the rest is a surprise, which just makes us even more excited to finally experience this new attraction!
