If you’ve been following along, you may already be well aware of Disney’s conservation efforts which were announced in late July. Measures to eliminate plastic waste in Disney destinations worldwide include refillable amenities in Resort rooms and the reduction of plastic shopping bags as well as the reduction of plastic straws used at the resorts and restaurants. It was announced that these efforts were to be in place by mid-2019. Single-Use Plastic Straws to be Eliminated However, implementations have already begun in earnest. We just reported that plastic straws are now available only by request at several restaurants in Walt Disney World. And now, we’ve learned that Disneyland Resort is set to eliminate single-use plastic straws, lids, and shopping bags across property this week. According to Mouse Mail (an official Disneyland publication) plastic straws are to be available only by request. And plastic lids for adult iced beverages will no longer be offered. (Currently in Disney World, kids will continue to get plastic straws in the kids’ cups.) Please note that guests with disabilities who may require a straw or lid for their beverage will be accommodated with alternative options, and the Services for Guests with Disabilities team will be available before and during visits. Plastic shopping bags will only be available by request in merchandise locations as well. Bing Bong’s Sweet Stuff confectionery and merchandise shop According to Disney’s Bob Chapek, Chairman, Disney Parks, Experiences, and Consumer Products: “Eliminating plastic straws and other plastic items are meaningful steps in our long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship. These new global efforts help reduce our environmental footprint, and advance our long-term sustainability goals.” Disney also invites guests to explore the following website: www.thewaltdisneycompany.com/environment. Epcot’s International Food and Wine Festival is a fabulous opportunity to eat lots of great food and to drink lots of great drinks. And while we know we’ll be putting some of our returning favorites on our must-eat list — we also make a second list: New Stuff We Can’t Wait to Try! (Yeah, we’re all about lists here at DFB!) 2018 Epcot International Food and Wine Festival And this is that list — including a few items we got the chance to sample recently! Guinness Baileys Shake – Ireland The new Guinness Bailey’s Shake from the Ireland booth got us all kinds of excited when we saw it on the menu! We were expecting a frozen, creamy drink with a powerful hit of Guinness and Baileys — and that’s just what we got when we tried it during a preview! PLUS it comes with the glass! We can’t wait to try it again! Guinness Baileys Shake Mimosa Bar The Shimmering Sips Mimosa Bar is brand new this year, and the offerings sound incredible! Mimosas include varieties like the Tropical Mimosa and the Madras Mimosa (which we have tried!), and there’s a tasty-sounding, kid-friendly drink called Frozen Apple Pie! Madras Mimosa But aside from those intriguing drinks, the Mimosa Bar is also serving up pastries like an Almond Croissant and a Cheese Danish with Sweet Icing! One of each, please! Cronuts – Taste Track Cronuts have been tantalizing tastebuds at the Disney Parks for a couple of years now, with a trio making an appearance at Epcot’s International Festival of the Arts this past spring. Trio of Savory Croissant Doughnuts But Food and Wine is upping the game with its cronut offerings at Taste Track with Croissant Doughnuts in a variety of iterations: cinnamon sugar, chocolate and marshmallows, chocolate hazelnut cream, and sprinkles. How will we choose just one, that is the question. (Spoiler Alert: We totally WON’T choose.) We imagine they’ll look a bit like this peppermint sprinkles offering at Epcot’s International Festival of the Holidays last year — and that’s cool with us! Chocolate Peppermint Glazed Croissant Donut Short Rib Tostada – Mexico Ooh, a Short Rib Tostada! We are stoked to try this awesome combination of eats! The corn tortilla with short ribs, black beans, salsa verde, and onion sounds like a slightly twisted classic, and we are all about that! The Mexico food booth is also going to have a Shrimp Quesadilla that sounds like a terrific take on Mexican grub! 2018 Epcot Food and Wine Festival: Mexico Booth Poutines – Refreshment Port Refreshment Port has two poutine versions on its Food and Wine menu this year — and one is a sweet vegetarian option! The Sweet Potato Poutine will be topped with caramel sauce, mini marshmallows, and pecans! We’re getting Grandma’s sweet potato pie vibes on this one! The other option is Beef Brisket Poutine topped with beer cheese sauce (!!!), poutine gravy, and crispy onions! Refreshment Port has been serving up poutine (some topped with cheddar cheese soup!) for a while now, but we’re excited to try a couple new creations! Refreshment Port’s previous Cheddar Cheese Poutine! Butternut Squash Ravioli – Wine & Dine Studio We’re pretty big fans of anything butternut squash-related, so when we spotted Butternut Squash Ravioli on the Wine & Dine Studio menu, we knew that had to go on our list! This version is served with brown butter vinaigrette, Parmesan cheese, and pumpkin seeds. We can’t wait to enjoy the balance of flavors and textures again! Butternut Squash Ravioli Maple Bacon Funnel Cake – Funnel Cake Stand American Adventure You had us at funnel cake, Funnel Cake Stand in American Adventure! This Festival offering is a Maple Bacon Funnel Cake topped with Candied Bacon, and it sounds amazing! The combination of sweet maple and salty bacon is almost always a winner, so we have high expectations. Putting those ingredients atop a crispy funnel cake? Please. We’re definitely in! Funnel Cake Stand in the America Pavilion With so many options to eat at Epcot’s International Food and Wine Festival, it can be hard to narrow down the choices — but we always make room to try new things that sound fantastic (and some that sound downright interesting!). And that’s a great tip for the Festival: balance out those old favorites with some newcomers, and you’ll be sure to have a delicious time! Disney’s Animal Kingdom is celebrating the first birthday of the first Sumatran tiger cubs born at the park, Anala and Jeda. To mark the special occasion, our animal care team created a birthday-themed enrichment treat – a “cake” made for them to gnaw and paw. Enrichment is an important part of their care and is stimulating and fun for the animals. The cubs have had a momentous first year. Both are thriving and have made significant growth in size and skills, as they stay close to their mom Sohni and learn from her lead. Born weighing roughly three pounds each, Anala and Jeda have grown into robust young cubs. Today, Anala weighs 160 pounds, and Jeda is 167. For the sake of comparison, their father Malosi weighs 290 pounds. (Cubs shown in photos above at one-month old on left and about seven months old on right.) The cubs continue to hit all their development milestones and enjoy learning to be tigers – they practice hiding, creeping and pouncing on mom and each other. As you might expect, Anala and Jeda act like siblings. They have a special bond but differ in many ways. Anala is feisty and independent in spirit. Jeda is more laid back. Both are incredibly intelligent, and guests continue to enjoy watching the tiger family play and explore their habitat on the Maharajah Jungle Trek. Anala and Jeda have also learned, like their parents, to participate in their own medical care. For example, they respond to certain hand signals or verbal cues by voluntarily opening their mouths or standing on a station for routine weight checks. They also present their tails and paws for inspection on cue. Disney’s Animal Kingdom is proud to play an important role in the worldwide conservation and understanding of Sumatran tigers, a critically endangered species. The birth of these Sumatran tiger cubs was a remarkable event that took nearly three years of planning through the Species Survival Plan (SSP), which is overseen by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and ensures responsible breeding. Fewer than 500 Sumatran tigers are left in the wild due to threats such as habitat loss, poaching and the illegal wildlife trade. Since 1995, the Disney Conservation Fund has provided more than $2.5 million to 14 nonprofit organizations working to protect tigers and their habitats in the wild. As a part of its focus on saving wildlife, the DCF is also helping the Wildlife Conservation Society and its partners protect tigers in Sumatra, Indonesia, by building support for tiger conservation, combating illegal wildlife trade and supporting community rangers who walked more than 5,600 miles in the last year to patrol 1,700 square miles of tigers’ forest habitat. You can see Sohni, Malosi and their cubs on the Maharajah Jungle Trek and learn more about tigers by visiting DisneyAnimals.com. View the full article

Over the last several months, we have been hearing great feedback from guests using the many recently launched vacation tools in the My Disney Experience app – from shopping for merchandise and mobile ordering food to checking into your hotel on the go and viewing bus times to the parks. One of these exciting new features is that the app can now turn your Bluetooth®-enabled mobile phone into a digital key that unlocks your hotel room door, representing another seamless room entry option for guests to use in addition to their MagicBands. This technology made its initial debut at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge earlier this year, and this week, we are completing its rollout to Disney Resort hotels at Walt Disney World Resort, including Disney Vacation Club properties. Using a digital key can help add convenience and flexibility to your stay, whether you simply prefer the look and feel of your mobile phone or if you need a backup option after accidentally locking yourself out of your room (it happens to the best of us). The feature was designed with a distinctly Disney touch, and if you listen closely, you’ll hear the sound of pixie dust filling the air as your hotel door opens. Guests can also use their digital key to unlock the hotel entrance gate and common area doors requiring a key, which may include fitness centers, elevators and club level lounges. And arriving travel parties that have checked in online may even use their digital key to bypass the front desk, similar to what they are able to do with the MagicBand, giving them the opportunity to go directly to their room when it is ready and start their vacation even faster. Each guest staying in the room with a My Disney Experience account may opt in and activate the feature on their check-in day through a brief set up process in the app. To enter their room, guests tap the “Unlock Door” button and then simply hold their phone against the door lock. This is the latest in the evolution of keyless room entry, which began with the MagicBand, the unique all-in-one device that allows you to effortlessly access the plans and vacation choices you’ve made in My Disney Experience. Guests can choose to use either or both options for room entry throughout their trip, but please remember to wear your MagicBand for all other uses, including park entry, FastPass+ redemption, linking Disney PhotoPass images and more. Be sure to download the latest version of My Disney Experience today for iOS or Android to opt in and activate your digital key during your Disney Resort hotel stay and discover all of the other great features in the app. Apple is a trademark of Apple Inc., registered in the U.S. and other countries.
