Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party has returned to Magic Kingdom Park for the season. To celebrate, we headed out to the park on Friday night with 200 Disney Parks Blog readers to enjoy the festive fall fun one of our favorite annual events. Our guests not only got to experience all the haunting offerings the party has to offer, including trick-or-treating, character photo opps, and “Happy HalloWishes” fireworks, but they also were able to enjoy the Happy HalloWishes Dessert Party. Sunshine Seasons in the Land Pavilion at Walt Disney World’s Epcot is a great go-to for desserts — including the always incredible Red Velvet Mickey Whoopie Pie and the fruity Strawberry Shortcake! Last fall, the Dolphin (of Walt Disney World’s Swan and Dolphin Hotel) revealed a brand new look for its lobby including a new lobby bar called Phins, a new grab ’n go market named Fuel, and more. And now, the Swan’s lobby is undergoing a renovation of its own. Renderings for the updated Swan The lobby and public spaces (like the front desk, rotunda, and lounging areas) will undergo part of the $3 million transformation. And the Swan’s coffee bar, Java Bar, will also receive a makeover as part of the redesign project. Renderings for the updated Swan Look for the work to incorporate the water theme that is already in place in the redesigned guest rooms and the Dolphin’s still-new lobby. Lantern lights and sconces, palm leaf designs, and Bahama shutters will bring guests into a “serene tropical oasis.” Renderings for the updated Swan The Swan Resort will remain open to guests during the renovation with work taking place in phases. The project is anticipated to be completed by the end of this year! Once complete, both main lobbies, all the guest rooms, and meeting spaces at the Swan and Dolphin will be entirely updated. It was all started by a mouse. Now 90 years later, we are in party-prep mode for the birthday of the one and only Mickey Mouse. With a milestone as big as 90 years, one party simply will not do! That’s why Mickey’s birthday celebration will span across the globe with a series of events at all Disney Parks sites around the world, including the previously announced World’s Biggest Mouse Party – a limited-time, global celebration of Mickey and Minnie – as well as ‘Mickey: The True Original Exhibition’ in New York City. Walt Disney World Resort in Florida will celebrate Mickey’s birthday from November 16-18 with special merchandise and food & beverage items as well as the chance for guests to celebrate at Magic Kingdom Park during the “Move It! Shake It! Dance & Play It!” Street Party, sing “Happy Birthday” along with the Dapper Dans on Main Street, U.S.A., and join in a special birthday dance party at Rockettower Plaza Stage in Tomorrowland. Then in 2019, Walt Disney World will continue celebrating when World’s Biggest Mouse Party comes to the resort. Disneyland Resort in California will host a celebration cavalcade for Mickey Mouse on November 18, featuring some of his special friends and the Disneyland Band, starting at “it’s a small world” and pausing for a special moment at Sleeping Beauty Castle before continuing down Main Street, U.S.A., to Town Square. The party continues when World’s Biggest Mouse Party begins at Disneyland Resort in 2019. Disney Cruise Line will join the celebration when World’s Biggest Mouse Party takes to the seas in 2019. Shanghai Disney Resort will be the first to kick off World’s Biggest Mouse Party with a brand-new Mickey-themed float at the opening ceremony of the Shanghai Tourism Festival on September 15 to commemorate the Shanghai launch of World’s Biggest Mouse Party. At Shanghai Disneyland, a giant birthday card will be installed next to “Storytellers” statue, featuring birthday wishes from Mickey’s pals. From November 16-18, guests will enjoy themed food and merchandise offerings as well as the opportunity to sing “Happy Birthday” to Mickey just before the nighttime spectacular show each evening, all culminating with a special nighttime birthday spectacular at Enchanted Storybook Castle on November 18. Hong Kong Disneyland will begin its World’s Biggest Mouse Party activations on Mickey’s birthday, November 18, with commemorative park tickets, special food & beverage and merchandise, a hotel room overlay and “We Love Mickey” projection show through February 2019. And Hong Kong Disneyland guests will receive special birthday stickers, available only on November 18. Tokyo Disney Resort will join the celebration this fall with special decorations and merchandise. Disneyland Paris will celebrate the World’s Biggest Mouse Party this fall and into winter with new holiday season entertainment and special surprises. “Mickey: The True Original Exhibition,” an interactive art exhibit, will open in New York from November 8, 2018 – February 10, 2019. In less than two weeks the 2018 Epcot International Food & Wine Festival will kick off and it is one of the panelists favorite events of the year. From delectable foods to fantastic entertainment, it’s easy to see why this is a must-do festival at Walt Disney World Resort. The festival takes place in World Showcase at Epcot from August 30 to November 12, 2018. The Marketplaces are open daily during regular park hours, and it’s important to remember that Epcot admission is required. While the Marketplaces are indeed open during regular park hours, Emille reminds guests that they are not open during Extra Magic Hours. She suggests enjoying those delectable treats before they close and planning to take advantage of the attractions open during the Extra Magic Hours. Moms Panel reminder: Marketplace food and beverage samples do require a separate purchase and Amy H. shares some great tips when it comes to your Dining Plan and the Marketplace kiosks. “If you want to trade a Quick Service meal entitlement for Snack credits, you may trade the Quick Service meal for three Snack credits. You will have to use all three Snack credits at the same Global Marketplace. While a beverage is included in the Quick Service meal, once you trade it for Snack credits the beverage is no longer included. You can use one of your three Snack credits to purchase a beverage that is indicated as a Snack on the menu, typically soda or bottled water.” Great food is not all you will find at the International Food & Wine Festival, you can also enjoy the rocking good sounds of some of your favorite bands at the Eat to the Beat Concert Series. Nomad Lounge has called Animal Kingdom home for just over two years now. It shares a structure and opening date with Tiffins. Their menu is always changing, and on this visit I tried some favorites as well as new items. Nomad Lounge Nomad Lounge’s focus is on hand-crafted cocktails, non-alcoholic specialty drinks, and small plates. You’ll also find a broad selection of wines and beers, specifically from the African, Asian, and South American continents. The flavors from these three regions also define much of their menu. Atmosphere Nomad Lounge is in the same structure as Tiffins, and located in the Discovery Island section of the park. If you’re a nomad-at-heart, traveler, or have wanderlust this is a location designed with you in mind. Nomad Lounge The lounge is decorated with banners depicting reasons “Why I Travel”. It is worth taking the extra time to read and appreciate these. Nomad Lounge You have the option of indoor or outdoor seating. On this typically humid/rainy August day in Florida I opted for the indoor, air conditioned area. If you do sit outside you are treated to a great view. View of the Patio View Eats and Drinks On this trip I tried some new menu items as well as some favorites – the Cheese Plate, Truffle Poutine (new) and Impossible Burger Sliders (new), and Churros. Small Plate and Dessert Menu at Nomad Lounge Assorted Small Plates at Nomad Lounge First up was the Cheese plate or more formally known as the “Selection of Artisanal Cheeses“. This was the perfect afternoon snack while the rains came down outside! Selection of Artisanal Cheeses at Nomad Lounge All of the options at present were delicious, but the Point Reyes (which seems to be the blue on many Disney cheese plates right now) was perfect with a nice drizzle of honey. I also liked the addition of the truffle cheese (next to the Point Reyes), which is also the cheese used on the poutine right now. It looks like Brie, but it has a stronger structure and, of course, flavor. Blue Cheese and Honey from the Selection of Artisanal Cheeses at Nomad Lounge The cheese plate is served with toasted Naan bread, which had a serious sweetness to it. As always, don’t be afraid to ask for more bread! Next up was the new Truffle Poutine. This was really delicious…and very truffle-y. If you’re not a fan of truffle flavor or truffle oil, ask them to go easy on it when you order. The only down side was I felt it needed more cheese and gravy. I was really missing the extra gravy that came with the House-Smoked Kobe Style Brisket Poutine that this menu item replaced…so I asked for more! It was no problem to get a small carafe of gravy to add on top. Truffle Poutine at Nomad Lounge Next, I gave the new Impossible Burger Sliders a try. They were served with slaw and chipotle aioli, and Yucca fries on the side. Impossible Burger Sliders at Nomad Lounge EVERYONE loves these. But I’m not 100% sold. I liked the savory flavor of them — they had a strong saltiness. But mine were very dry and chewy. I think they could have used a bit more chipotle aioli. Impossible Burger Sliders at Nomad Lounge Overall, they’re a decent alternative to meat if you’re eating vegan or vegetarian, but I’m a fan of old-fashioned veggie burgers. Impossible Burger Sliders at Nomad Lounge The yucca fries were a good version of the dish — crispy and savory. So it was time to close out this visit with a little something sweet! And OH MY GOODNESS. These Churros are SO AMAZING. This is a generous serving of five churros (smaller than park churros in length) and comes with Vanilla Crema and Chili Strawberry dipping sauces. Churros at Nomad Lounge These churros are super soft — not stale or chewy like they can be in the parks, which I think is owing to them having gluten-friendly ingredients. (This is definitely a situation where the gluten-friendly version is better than the regular version!) The Chili Strawberry sauce is sweet with some heat at the end. It’s basically like “Oh, this is just strawberry jam…BUT WOAH!” The Vanilla Crema is great for those who don’t want the heat in the Strawberry sauce. Both of the sauces were delicious on their own, and also really good together as well. Cocktail Menu at Nomad Lounge Of course I needed a drink to wash all this down! The menu carries the travel theme with it in its design with “travel notes” and photos, almost like a travel journal. Cocktail Menu at Nomad Lounge I opted for the Boto-Rita, a margarita made with Mezcal, along with grapefruit liqueur, guava puree, and lime juice. Boto-Rita at Nomad Lounge The drink looks just like the menu picture, which isn’t always the case. I found this a little too bitter and pulpy — and a bit spicy as well. I was expecting a more refreshing drink with the combination of grapefruit, guava, and lime flavors, but this was kind of heavy and “chewy” ha ha! It’s like a meal on its own, which would be fine if I just wanted a drink. But as an accompaniment to all of this food, it didn’t really work. Nosh or Not? Pack your bags and travel to Nomad Lounge if: You love eats and drinks that are unique and not “run of the mill”. You are fascinated by the level of detail that Disney goes into with themes and decor. You just need to take a break, have a drink or food, and escape the park (or crowds) for a while. You might head in another direction if: Quick service is more your style, or you have kiddos that might not enjoy the more adult the menu. (Children are welcome at Nomad Lounge, and there were several there on my visit. A few were even taking quick naps during the rain outside — a great plan in this comfy lounge!) You’re looking for a more “complete” meal – these are small plates, which can be combined to make a satisfying meal, but some prefer a “larger” plate. You’re more into straight up snack/bar food. This is definitely small plates with a twist (think yucca fries instead of potato fries). Overall Nomad Lounge remains an ideal location to stop in for a while to relax and enjoy a drink and some snacks. The story being told in the decor is worth the stop as they have really gone above and beyond with the theme here. Whether you’re stopping in to dine or just look this is worth your time. In our Disney Doodle series, different Disney artists take turns imagining what different Disney characters would do or see first if they had the chance to visit a Disney Park. In today’s Doodle, artist Ashley Taylor envisions what Jane, the adventurous heroine from “Tarzan,” would do if she could visit a park. Just a few days ago we let you in on a not-so-little secret menu item available at Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe. This secret menu item is available when using Mobile Ordering, and it contains two of our favorite buzz words: pork belly. Cosmic Ray’s Sign Cosmic Ray’s Pork Belly Burger is a masterpiece of meat and fried things, and honestly, there’s no way it couldn’t be good if you’re into those two things. And I just so happen to be very into them! Pork Belly Burger on Mobile Order The burger combines pork belly and Angus beef topped with a slice of smoked gouda, a drizzle of sriracha aioli, and a pile of crispy pork rinds. The whole thing is skewered and garnished with fried pickles and a pickled pepper. Pork Belly Burger You might be thinking to yourself “This is more like a financial marvel at $18!” And we hear you. It’s crazy expensive. I spent a LOT of time deliberating whether I could recommend it at that price. After all, even if it IS table-service quality ingredients and food, it’s still Cosmic Ray’s; so it’s not like you’re getting an awesome sit-down restaurant atmosphere experience for the price. (I mean, there are some table service eats priced at less than $18 over that the awesome Plaza Restaurant just a few steps away.) Pork Belly Burger The burger itself is delicious and moist, flavored through and through by the pork and beef combination. The cheese and aioli add dimension to the burger, while that brioche bun works to keep it all together. Pork Belly Burger The pork rinds are an inspired touch, adding a ton of crunch to the sandwich. I loved that the aioli soaked into the rinds a bit. And while the sriracha aioli wasn’t exactly a spice-bomb, it adds a good flavor and a smidgen of heat. Pork Belly Burger So, the bottom line: I LOVED IT! I loved it, and I would totally order it again at that price. But take that as a guarded recommendation. If you’re after flavor and an incredible burger experience, then it will be worth it to you, too. BUT… If you’re with your whole family and rushing to eat and the baby’s crying and you’re trying to get Joey’s peeled apples from the bottom of the diaper bag and Susie just wet her pants and you’re late for your Goofy’s Barnstormer fastpass…yeah, in those circumstances you’re probably not in the right mindset to truly enjoy this $18 burger. And I get that. I BEEN THERE. A few more things to consider: If you do choose to order this amazing burger — you’ve got the bonus of this being a Mobile Ordering secret menu item, so that means you’ll generally get your food faster than if you wait in the standard ordering lines.
