We recently gave you a sneak peek at all the Holiday Fun coming to Disney World for the 2018 Season! Epcot Christmas Tree During the Christmas in July Media Event, we were also able to participate in a preview of Disney’s Yuletide Fantasy Tour, which will be offered once again this year on select dates in November and December. This 3.5-hour tour brings guests backstage to learn about what goes on behind the scenes to make the Holiday Season completely magical in Disney World! Christmas in July Media Preview The tour begins at Epcot, where a Cast Member Tour Guide greets the participants. Then, it’s off to a festively decorated bus to head over to a backstage warehouse while the Tour Guide shares stories about what Christmases were like for Walt Disney and his family. Walt Disney in a Vintage Photo Guests will also notice headsets in the seats on the bus — these are great for use during the walking tour so you don’t miss any details of what the Guide has to share! Now, something to note: guests are encouraged to leave their bags and belongings on the bus. This is not simply for guest comfort — it’s also due to the fact that pictures and videos are prohibited in the backstage areas, so you needn’t bring your cameras anyway. (Guests are also given bottles of water to bring inside the warehouse… because even though it will probably be less so in the winter months, the tour space can get toasty!) Once inside, guests have a chance to take in the sheer amount of decorations stored in the Holiday Services Warehouse. It helps you wrap your head around where they keep ALL THIS… Pop Century Christmas Tree Decorations Wilderness Lodge Christmas Tree Magic Kingdom at Christmas … and MUCH more! Though many of these will be in use during the holiday season, you can still get a great idea of the massive undertaking of decorating every corner of Disney World! Fresh Flowers in Crystal Palace During the Christmas in July preview, the department was working on arrangements for weddings and corporate events, and we were able to explore the cooler filled with fresh flowers… and we even received a little surprise (but that’s a secret!). New to the tour this year is a final stop at Amorette’s Patisserie in Disney Springs. Amorette’s Patisserie during the Holidays Tour guests will be decorating a tour-exclusive Disney-themed Gingerbread Man, and will even receive a special gift at the end of the class that will correlate with their Disney Gingerbread! (We don’t know all the details yet, as Amorette’s would like to keep some of the information a SURPRISE for as long as they can!) Gingerbread Amorette’s Patisserie From here, guests can choose to stay and explore Disney Springs or board the bus back to Epcot. But that’s after receiving a souvenir of the day… Yuletide Fantasy Tour Pin Again, the Yuletide Fantasy Tour is offered on select dates throughout November and December. A new, fan-friendly event is coming to Walt Disney World Resort just in time for Labor Day weekend – the unofficial end of summer. The Labor Day Fan Zone – taking place Sept. 1-2 inside the Visa Athletic Center at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex – is an interactive fan festival featuring high-energy music by a popular DJ, food and beverage options, event merchandise, vendor booths, character greetings and big-screen televisions showing various sporting events. The event runs 7:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m., both days. It’s going to be a busy weekend at the sports complex, so the Labor Day Fan Zone provides a nice way for people to relax and have some fun in between other activities. Access to the Labor Day Fan Zone is included in the admission price to ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. The sports complex admission price for Adults and kids who are 10+ is $18.50; the admission price for children ages 3 – 9 is $13.50. More than 260 athletes from 43 teams – including five from the U.S. Virgin Islands and five from Puerto Rico – will participate in the Disney Labor Day Baseball Classic, Aug. 31-Sept. 3. Nearly 4,400 boys’ and girls’ soccer players from 270 teams around the country will be competing in the Disney Soccer Showcase Qualifier, Sept. 1-3. This event is the precursor to the prestigious Disney Soccer Showcase events later this year, nationally regarded as the top youth soccer tournament in the country, attracting hundreds of college coaches looking for top recruits. Champions from each division of the Disney Soccer Showcase Qualifier earn automatic selection into the Disney Girls’ Soccer Showcase (Nov. 22-25) and the Disney Boys’ Soccer Showcase (Dec. 27-31). September will soon be here and with it comes the frightfully fun event, Halloween on the High Seas. During this spooktacular time, each Disney cruise ship will be transformed to celebrate the ghoulish holiday in true Disney style. The wickedly fun sailing will be filled with Halloween-themed parties and festive entertainment. From Mickey’s Mouse-querade Party, fun for the entire family, to Halloween Isn’t Just For Kids, a night out for adults complete with a costume contest and dancing. There truly is something for everyone! Along with all the extra fun these sailings offer, Disney Parks Moms Panelist, Beth S. reminds guests they will also be able to enjoy the amazing Broadway-style shows they have come to love, as well as Pirate Night. “If you set sail on a Halloween on the High Seas cruise aboard the Disney Dream, you will still have a Pirate Night! Sixty years ago, the Fire Engine made its first journey down Main Street, U.S.A. Let’s take a ride down memory lane to hear the story behind one of Disneyland Resort’s most beloved classic vehicles. To start, here are five fun facts about the Fire Engine: It made its debut in 1958 as the last addition to Disneyland park’s classic vehicle fleet. The vehicle is not licensed to drive on public streets, so it is exclusive to the Disneyland Resort. Although it cruises up and down Main Street, U.S.A. at 5 miles per hour with guests in tow, the Fire Engine’s top speed is 35 miles per hour. As a true piece of beloved Disney history, the Fire Engine is kept in immaculate condition, and its details always look sparkly and new. The truck was inspired by turn-of-the-early 20th century Fire Engines, such as the 1907 Rambler and vintage LaFrance fire trucks. The Fire Engine has an incredibly rich Disney history. Now, let’s take a closer look at three important people in this vehicle’s story: Bob Gurr: The Fire Engine was designed by Bob Gurr, a legendary Imagineer with more than 100 plans for Disney attractions under his belt. Walt Disney first took notice of Bob’s passion for tools and mechanics after Bob consulted on the creation of attractions vehicles for Autopia, and the two men would go to inspire one another for years. Walt Disney: Walt himself was known to drive the Fire Engine through the park before opening to survey operations and discover opportunities for improvement. In fact, in the fall of 1966, Walt and Mickey posed on the Fire Engine in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle for what would become one of their last photos together. These photos have become iconic images of Walt, a symbol of the magical legacy he left behind. Steve Finley: It’s nearly impossible to talk about the Fire Engine without mentioning longtime attraction host Steven “Steve” Finley. Steve got his start at the Disneyland Resort in 1973 working at Tomorrowland Terrace Restaurant, and has served as beloved driver of the Fire Engine for the past 40 years. Nowadays, he can often be found handing out stickers to young riders or sounding the Fire Engine’s immediately recognizable horn. Just when you think no more game changers could possibly find a space in Disney Springs… Learn About: Wine Bar George Downtown Disney Disney World Restaurants …along comes something like Wine Bar George. We first explored Wine Bar George when it opened just this past May. It is located in The Landing of Disney Springs, which is home to other standouts from newer favorites like Morimoto Asia to places we’ve adored for a long time, like Raglan Road. (And that just scratches the surface.) Wine Bar George is the only wine bar in the Sunshine State owned by a Master Sommelier, George Miliotes. His history with the Disney company notably includes being part of the opening team at the Contemporary Resort’s California Grill. And right upon entering the wine bar, you’ll find an atmosphere and vibe unlike any other in Disney Springs… Wine Bar George …or, in fact, all of Disney World. Atmosphere Simply put, Wine Bar George is lovely. Welcome to the downstairs bar Entering downstairs, the first bar is front and center, and makes a great showcase for the bar’s wine bottles and glasses. Seating surrounding downstairs bar Over 130 wines are showcased in Wine Bar George, available by the glass, bottle, and ounce. (We’ll talk about this a little more later.) 135 Wines Moving upstairs, the space remains refined and low lighting and candlelight even provide touches of elegance. First Room Upstairs But the overall feel is still comfortable with brick and woods in abundance, and even a few couches for relaxing. First Room Upstairs And though the entire space seats 210 guests, the way the areas are divided and arranged offers a surprisingly intimate and even cozy feel. Wine Bar George Second Room Upstairs Wine Bar George Second Room Upstairs The outdoor terrace will be especially appealing as the cooler months arrive in the late fall. Terrace at Wine Bar George The space (you can take a full tour here) well reflects the whole idea behind Wine Bar George: it’s a place where everyone from wine novices to wine experts (or people simply looking for a great bite to eat) can feel at ease and welcome. Another part of the atmosphere that can’t go unnoticed is the presence of the man behind the name, Master Sommelier George Miliotes. Though of course it can’t be guaranteed that Sommelier Miliotes will be there during your visit, it is absolutely worth noting that he has been there nearly ever day since the opening — he is by no means an absentee landlord. And in fact, he’s friendly, engaging, and down to earth. Master Sommelier George Miliotes The staff follows suit, with most being very knowledgeable about wine. Sommelier Miliotes partners with Chef Ron Rupert, who was also a member of California Grill’s opening team and is now the Executive Chef for Wine Bar George. So let’s see what they’ve created together for the menu! Eats As we examine the menu, let’s dive right into the current Wine List at Wine Bar George! Whites, reds, sparkling and champagne, along with wines on tap are highlighted on the menu. Wine Bar George Menu You’ll also notice Outstanding by the Ounce offerings. The Outstanding by the Ounce program allows guests to try very high end wines by the ounce at an affordable price. Wine Bar George Menu And here is something I definitely want to highlight: anyone can order any one of the wines by the OUNCE. Not many — if any — wine bars offer this. This, in essence, makes all of the wine quite accessible to anyone who wants to try them! George’s Finds, wines on tap, specialty cocktails, beer, and cider make up the remainder of the plentiful drink offerings. Wine Bar George Menu Food features Small Plates and Boards, along with Family Style Plates. Wine Bar George Menu The Dessert offerings include The Chocolate Experience, which pairs three wines with three chocolates. If your visit falls within lunch hours (from 11:00 AM until about 4:00 PM), you’ll have access to the additional Lunch Menu, complete with suggested pairings listed on the menu. (If you’re visiting late night instead, remember that Wine Bar George is open until midnight on Sundays through Wednesdays, and until 2:00 AM on Thursdays through Saturdays.) Wine Bar George Lunch Menu One of those lunch options is the Steak Frites (my main reason for visiting Wine Bar George on this particular day was to GET. THAT. DISH.), which tops a generous pile of French Fries with the tender, flavorful Skirt Steak that is also served Family-Style. A caramelized onion aioli finishes the dish. Steak Frites The portion is generous, the dish is delicious, and I would definitely order this again. And, yes, there’s all the amazing aoili-and-steak-juice soaking into those fries at the bottom — SO GOOD. Okay, it’s onto the regular menu! Now, do you fancy a pour… Pouring Red Wine … or three ? Trio of Red Wines Remember, if you have any hesitation about which wine to order, the staff — and even Sommelier Milioties, if you catch him, which you very well may! — are knowledgeable, friendly, and make the experience entirely non-intimidating for those who aren’t connoisseurs. Tarima Hill In fact, the learning process is really part of the fun even for the servers imparting the knowledge, from what I could tell. Triton Tinta de Toro Small Plates include the Crispy Mac and Cheese Bites, which you’ve previously heard me rave about. And, frankly, I’m about to do it again. Crispy Mac and Cheese Bites The “crispy” here refers to the fried, golden breading. The macaroni and cheese tucked inside remains soft, melty, and gooey. With the tomato nage (a broth, essentially), the dish is Chef Rupert’s version of grilled cheese and tomato soup, so it’s like comfort food in small bite form, and it’s terrific. Crispy Mac and Cheese Bites I love that there is an element of fun in some of the items, even within a more refined dining experience. (P.S. You can also find these TO GO at The Basket, the Counter Service component of Wine Bar George!) Porchetta Spiced Pork Cheeks are served in a cast iron skillet atop a very creamy triple cheese polenta with orange gremolata for additional flavor. Porchetta Spiced Pork Cheeks Cheek meat is remarkable for being both lean and tender at the same time, and the Wine Bar George version wowed my dining companion. I wasn’t sold on them, though. I found the other dishes more flavorful. The guest-favorite Chicken Skewers are topped with an Asian slaw and seasoned with togarashi to deliver some heat! (I’m not a big slaw fan, so I ordered my slaw on the side.) These were excellent — savory with a tiny kick. Chicken Skewers At this point, it gets a little difficult to narrow down the choices. Because, truly, everything was excellent. My recommendation would be to grab a group, if it works within your traveling party, and just order up a bunch of the small plates. I don’t think you could really go wrong. In addition to the plates, though, is something else you really can’t miss — any one of the three Boards: Artisanal Cheese, Charcuterie, and The Big Board. White Wine and Artisanal Cheese Board If you’ve been reading DFB for any length of time, you know how I love my cheese! I can never pass up a good cheese board, and given the opportunities for pairing with a Cheese or Charcuterie Board, they are pretty much a given must-do here. Artisanal Cheese Board The lovely Artisanal Cheese Board is prepared with the Chef’s selection of four artisanal cheeses varying in strength of flavor and textures. Almonds, olives, and jam complete the board, along with my very favorite accompaniment: a bit of honeycomb. Artisanal Cheese Board and Breads I love the perfectly golden grilled bread served with the cheeses; a wonderful touch. Larger parties may especially enjoy sharing The Big Board, which presents six cheeses and five crafted meats. And that completes our latest — but not our last! — visit to Wine Bar George! Nosh or Not? My first impressions of Wine Bar George were further confirmed on my most recent visit. You should visit Wine Bar George if: You are a wine drinker on any level — from novice to connoisseur. You will quite likely learn something or have access to a high-end wine that you may not have tried previously. (Or possibly both!) You enjoy great food in a lovely setting! Even if you choose not to imbibe, Wine Bar George serves up some seriously great food, so don’t rule it out. You are out to sample some of the reinvigorated night life in Disney Springs, with its more adult focus. You may want to skip a visit to Wine Bar George if: You don’t have the time to linger (in which case, you might want to check out The Basket at Wine Bar George). You are traveling with little ones and believe the atmosphere and cuisine may be lost on them. Overall Wine Bar George has a unique niche, even with the abundance of terrific offerings in Disney Springs. Truly outstanding food, a more intimate setting (which can be difficult to find in Disney World), and the chance to try some fantastic wines make Wine Bar George well worth a visit. It’s a great place for groups of friends hoping to sample lots of different foods and drinks together while also being the perfect place to grab a table for two for date night. There’s a reason this place is a favorite among Orlando-area locals — it’s great food, great wine, great atmosphere, and worth the price. We first previewed the Disney Halloween Cauldron Popcorn Bucket — one of a few specialty popcorn buckets popping up in Disney Parks this Halloween season — in this post full of spooky souvenirs you’ll see in the parks over the next couple of months! But today — we found it IRL! Magic Kingdom Cauldron Popcorn Bucket for Halloween 2018 Lines are forming for this little guy. He’s supposed to be found in every Disney World park and in Disneyland as well starting mid-September, but this is the first time we’ve spotted him! Cauldron Popcorn Bucket We found ours at the popcorn stand next to the castle, though they should be available at numerous locations soon. He’s $15 per bucket, and anyone can purchase it. One of the greatest attributes of Walt Disney World is its location because even when the rest of the country is ensconced in winter, central Florida is typically still warm (and in the summer it’s downright tropical!). And you know what that means: lots of frozen treats to eat and drink! Cinderella’s Castle with Stage We’ve had ’em all — and there are some old favorites and some NEW options we’re pretty sure you’re going to want to get your hot little hands on! Here we share Five Frozen Treats You Can’t Miss at the Magic Kingdom! Mint Julep Lemonade Slushy First up, as you make your way down Main Street, U.S.A., pop into Casey’s Corner. It’s there you can find the Mint Julep Lemonade Slushy! This family-friendly drink is a terrific mixture of sweet and sour — with that refreshing slushy texture and temperature! The mint flavor comes from a mint syrup, and garnishes include a lemon slice, a cherry, and a sprig of fresh mint! This is a fantastic way to energize your crew no matter the weather! Frozen Mint Julep Lemonade Citrus Swirl Over in Adventureland, you’ll (unsurprisingly) find two of our top five frozen treats. The Citrus Swirl is a Magic Kingdom classic, and it’s not to be missed! You can get yours as a swirl with vanilla soft serve or as a Citrus Swirl Orange Float with Orange Fanta to really drive home that orange flavor! But if you’re like us and are really in it for that frozen-orange-juice-out-of-a-can vibe, go with just the Citrus if it’s available — you’ll have to ask a cast member to do that one for you. Some will, some won’t. Citrus Swirl at Sunshine Tree Terrace And don’t forget: this past spring Disney tried to change up the Citrus Swirl, but guest pressure resulted in the return of the original! Now guests can find two versions of the Citrus Swirl: original and Orange Cream. We prefer the original — and you’ll definitely want to give it a whirl! Pineapple Upside Down Cake Topped with Dole Whip Of course, when in Adventureland, one must get a Dole Whip! This dairy-, egg-, and gluten-free treat is a Disney World guest favorite (and a must-get for your pals at the DFB!!). Dole Whip is frozen pineapple soft serve (which is actually how you’ll see it labeled on menus in other areas of the resort!) And it’s a sweet/sour/frozen treat trifecta that we insist you try! And if you’re going Dole Whip, you might as well go Pineapple Upside Down Cake with Dole Whip! Pineapple Upside Down Cake The greatest thing about Dole Whip is the many forms it’s taken lately, including a Dole Whip-Inspired Cupcake at All-Star Music and a Dole Whip-Inspired Eclair at Amorette’s Patisserie! Plus… Dole Whip comes spiked in a variety of locations! Peter Pan Float Once you’ve conquered the frozen treats in Adventureland, your next two must-try frozen treats are over in Fantasyland. Epcot’s International Food and Wine Festival begins NEXT WEEK, and it continues until November 12, 2018. That’s 75 days of food, wine, demonstrations, celebrity chefs, special events, seminars, etc., etc. Epcot’s 2018 International Food and Wine Festival Yeah, it’s a lot. And whether you’re a Food and Wine pro or a newbie, navigating this massive (and massively popular!) Festival can be a little overwhelming. That’s where your old pals at the DFB come in! We’ve accumulated a lot of experience in our LOOONG relationship with Food and Wine — and we’ve assembled all of that experience in one place: the DFB Guide to the 2018 Epcot International Food and Wine Festival! Here are some of the most popular FAQs from DFB readers and Food and Wine visitors — with answers direct from the DFB Guide! (But rest assured: there’s a lot more where these come from — over 250 pages more!!) 1. What’s included with admission to the park? Admission to Epcot is required for the Food and Wine Festival, even if all you want to do is purchase eats from the food booths. But the good news is: admission to Epcot during the Festival season gets you a lot more than the attractions you’re used to! Epcot beauty is priceless! Admission to the park includes access to the food booths in World Showcase, where you can then purchase Festival bites and beverages! There are also free exhibits and demonstrations where you can enjoy everything from chocolate to cooking seminars! Chocolate Moana Display In addition to these included-with-admission experiences, there are several low-cost events from which to choose as well! And don’t forget to book your Fastpass+ because you’ve still got rides and attractions to enjoy in addition to all the awesome Festival activities! 2. When are the food booths open? Good on ya for thinking ahead! The food booths around World Showcase open at 11AM each day of the Festival, while the Festival Center (INCLUDING MIMOSAS!!) opens at 9AM everyday. Epcot Food and Wine Festival Center — 2017 Some things to note: Food and Wine Festival food booths stay open even if it rains (as long as the inclement weather doesn’t endanger cast members)! So if there’s rain in the forecast on your Food and Wine day, pack an umbrella, and jump in line for your favorite eats! You can even scoot into a counter service restaurant to enjoy your eats sans sprinkle. And bonus: when it rains, you often find shorter lines! Rainy Day at Epcot The one time you can expect booths to close even when the park is open is during Extra Magic Hours. That’s because the Festival food booths don’t stay open for this block of time, which is set aside for Disney World Resort guests to enjoy the park for an extra hour or more. If you’re looking to supplement your regular-hours Festival time, the Festival is often open for an extra hour on Friday and Saturday nights — until 10PM. 3. Can I use Disney Dining Plan credits at the food booths? Good news: you can! Save up your snack credits, and use them to Eat Your Way Around the World! Also an option: trading a quick service meal credit to pick up three snack items at a single booth! One of each! Keep in mind that you need to apply the meal credit (which translates into three snack credits) in one transaction, so use this trick at a booth where you know you need to try three items. 4. How can I see/meet my favorite chef? If your favorite chef is making an appearance at Food and Wine, you’ll want to know how to see him/her — and maybe score a meet and greet! If you’re attending some of the more popular special events, you might find that the event offers a meet-and-greet component. Buddy Valastro at a 2011 Culinary Demonstration Your best chance to score a wristband for this is to visit the Festival Center early in the day (it opens at 9AM) to ask about autograph opportunities and book signings. You can also check with cast members at the event you’re attending. Not attending a special event? That’s okay! In the past, meet-and-greets have been possible even if guests didn’t attend an event. Check the Festival calendar, and inquire at the information desk in the Festival Center! 5. Should I bring kids to the Festival? Yes! Food and Wine offers plenty of opportunities for kids to have some fun and learn something new! Remy’s Ratatouille Hide & Squeak Scavenger Hunt engages littles in a fun hunt around the World Showcase — and ends with a small prize! And on select Sundays, Krusteaz presents Junior Chef Kitchen! Plus, there will be a cool, themed playground for maximum energy-consumption! Kids are also able to attend low-cost seminars and demonstrations — but they’ll need a ticket for the seminar or demo in question, so don’t forget to get theirs, too! How many days should I plan to attend the Festival? We recommend planning at least two days for Food and Wine if you really want to be sure to enjoy the booths and events.
