How lovely is today’s Disney Doodle? In it, artist Ashley Taylor imagines what Tarzan and Jane would do first if they could visit Disney’s Animal Kingdom. In the 1999 film “Tarzan,” Jane displays tremendous curiosity about the jungle and the animals that reside within it, so it’s only natural that this Disney couple would seek out a terrific place to see animals up close. “Experiencing Kilimanjaro Safaris at sunset is so romantic,” Ashley said. “It’s easy to imagine Tarzan wanting to take Jane on a romantic ride through Africa!” View the full article

The 2019 Disney California Adventure Food and Wine Festival kicks off FRIDAY, March 1 and runs through April 23, and today we have more news about returning booths! A brand new VIP Tour just kicked off TODAY: the new Taste of Magic Kingdom Park VIP Tour offers guests the chance to taste their way around Magic Kingdom while hearing stories of the food history of the parks from Disney Chefs and Cast Members as well as gaining access to backstage areas where guests have not previously entered! VIP Tour Guides We will have a full review of this new experience tomorrow. But TODAY, with many thanks to DFB’s Travel Agent partner, Small World Vacations’ Sue P., we have a FIRST LOOK at some of the sights — and tastes! — guests can look forward to! Mardi Gras Mickey Pastry As always, no photography is permitted backstage, which primarily involves visits to kitchens for various restaurants where guests learn about the process behind the dishes guests enjoy in the park. However, pictures are allowed in the general public areas. Some other logistics: Be sure to wear comfy shoes for this walking tour (no open toed footwear is allowed). Guests meet at Tony’s Town Square, where today they were greeted with Mickey Cinnamon Rolls (from Main Street Bakery) — currently dressed up for Mardi Gras! Mardi Gras Mickey Cinnamon Roll Now let’s take a few steps along the tour, and learn a few fun facts along the way! Main Street, U.S.A. Casey’s Corner was the first stop, which is fitting since it opened on day one of Magic Kingdom (though originally as the Coca Cola Refreshment Port). Casey’s Corner Tour guests took a walk through a very small 8-person kitchen. As it turns out, most food is actually prepared at Tomorrowland Terrace and then transported through Utilidors! Something interesting at Casey’s is that they still use paper orders unlike other locations which use computer screens for orders. Currently, the restaurant is preparing for the arrival of the next Featured Hot Dog of the Month for March, which will be Casey’s Corn Beef Hash Dog in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. Adventureland Jungle Navigation Co., Ltd. Skipper Canteen was the next stop, bringing guests to locations where only Jungle Cruise Skippers have been allowed previously! Skippers Only This is where Chef Alberto explained the menu and also shared some of the current dish ideas in progress for the Canteen. Chef Alberto During the time here, guests sampled the Buffalo Chicken Spring Roll (which has been an option at the Adventureland Spring Roll Cart,) washed down with a Schweitzer Falls Slushy (which is mango and green apple with Boba Balls). Buffalo Chicken Spring Roll Schweitzer Falls Slushy Did you know that the kitchen here provides food for Club 33, Liberty Tree Tavern, The Diamond Horseshoe, and other food carts in Adventureland? Staying in Adventureland, next was a stop at Tortuga Tavern! Tortuga Tavern The specialty of the house here, currently, is the Jumbo Turkey Leg, and guests got to enjoy a sample. Turkey Leg samples Each Turkey Leg weighs around 1.5 pounds! They are from Tom Turkeys (though guests often mistake the meat for ham). Also along the way was a stop at Aloha Isle for a tasting of everyone’s favorite: Dole Whip! Aloha Isle Liberty Square Strolling through Liberty Square, it’s time for that Disney World staple: Popcorn! Popcorn Cart And this is kind of amazing: in one year, Disney sells enough popcorn to fill the ENTIRE Tower of Terror! Fantasyland Heading into Fantasyland, it’s always exciting to enter Be Our Guest Restaurant. But it’s especially interesting to enter through the backstage area (near the bathrooms around Pinocchio Village Haus)! Entering Be Our Guest Restaurant Cast Members Only Here guests learned about how Disney continues to move forward in its efforts to be environmentally friendly and even reuses food waste as fuel for busses. Interesting views from this portion of the tour included the back of the it’s a small world and Haunted Mansion attractions, as well as an entrance to the Utilidors (this particular tour does not go into the Utilidors, nor does it enter the dining rooms of the Be Our Guest Restaurant). But what’s a visit to any part of Be Our Guest without tasting some of The Grey Stuff? The Grey Stuff! Remaining in Fantasyland, there was time to try the very sweet and delicious Mermaid Donut at Prince Eric’s Village Market. Mermaid Donut Tomorrowland Next, it’s off to Tomorrowland, stopping just outside of Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Café to learn that, when it first opened, Cosmic Ray’s was the busiest fast food location in the world, and even now it remains within the Top Three. And the final stop was Tomorrowland Terrace. And there is something more that takes place here… but it’s a secret. What we can tell you is that guests are given a sample of an in-development food item! However, as part of keeping the surprise for future visitors to the park, tour participants aren’t allowed to take pictures of or talk about the item. The Frog Prince Whoopie Pie What you’ll find is a cinnamon whoopie pie with graham cracker icing, Mardi Gras-colored sprinkles, and topped with a chocolate frog. The Lost Princess Cone can now be found at Storybook Treats in Magic Kingdom! Lost Princess Cone One of three new character and Disney film-inspired cones arriving in Magic Kingdom today, the Lost Princess Cone is inspired by the Lost Princess herself… none other than Rapunzel from Tangled. Storybook Treats Menu Rapunzel’s signature dress color, purple, is reflected in the color of the cone. It’s filled with lemon soft-serve (Dole Whip!) to mimic the piles and piles of Rapunzel’s blond hair. Lost Princess Cone But what makes this cone especially unique, visually, are the edible flowers which garnish the soft serve to mirror the flowers that decorate Rapunzel’s braided hair. Lost Princess Cone There is no denying that the Lost Princess Cone is a treat that is lovely to look at. But there is some good and bad news when it comes to this cone. Let’s start with the good news, which is that the Lemon Dole Whip (which joins our other new-to-Magic Kingdom Dole Whip flavors today) is AWESOME. Especially for my fellow sour fans out there! It’s bright and tart and tasty. But now, for the bad news…. we don’t know if this was just the case with our cone, but the purple sugar cone (with no additional flavor, only color) was simply not as sturdy and didn’t hold the treat as well as the blue cones that come with the new Hei Hei Cone and “Adventure Is Out There” Cone. Lost Princess Cone Be on the lookout for a quick melt at the bottom of your cone! Plus, the edible flowers, while very pretty, were not good at all. So just be sure to grab your pics of them before deciding whether you want to partake in that part. Lost Princess Cone Before you stop by Storybook Treats, note that the Lost Princess takes place of Tink’s Pixie-Dusted Cone (but Peter Pan fans can still grab the Peter Pan Float). ADVENTURE IS OUT THERE! And, as of today, Adventure is also at Auntie Gravity’s Galactic Goodies in Magic Kingdom’s Tomorrowland with the debut of the “Adventure Is Out There” Cone! “Adventure Is Out There!” Cone This new Up!-inspired cone joins the Hei Hei Cone and the Lost Princess Cone in the park as one of three new character and Disney film themed treats. It comes in at $5.29 (or a Disney Dining Plan snack credit) on Auntie’s Menu. Auntie Gravity’s Galactic Goodies menu The bright blue sugar cone mimics the color of the sky (and, as is per usual with other colorful cones we’ve encountered, there is no added flavor to the cone itself — it’s your regular sugar cone). “Adventure Is Out There!” Cone It’s filled with mango soft-serve (which we confirmed is Mango Dole Whip!) garnished with the signature “balloons” from Up! “Adventure Is Out There!” Cone The mango is more of a yellow hue than the orange you might expect for the flavor, but it definitely carries that tropical, fruity mango flavor. In fact, we found it to be even MORE potent than the pineapple flavor of the pineapple Dole Whip, which packs a punch of its own! The balloon garnish is also an interesting piece. Balloon garnish What you’ll find is that lots of mini chocolate candy “balloons” are joined together by one large piece of white chocolate. Balloon garnish Balloon garnish So it’s really like getting two treats in one with this extra “candy bar” style piece that comes off of the cone quite easily as its own snack, in a sense. Hi from Aloha Isle in Magic Kingdom, where we’re trying the NEW Hei Hei Cone! Aloha Isle Inspired, of course, by Hei Hei from Moana, this new tribute-in-a-treat gives a nod to the rooster through its colors and garnishes to create yet another Instagram-worthy snack with character! Hei Hei Cone! The Hei Hei Cone starts with a blue cone. Hei Hei Cone It’s filled with Dole Whip — the famous pineapple soft-serve, of course, and the specialty of Aloha Isle. BUT! It’s also filled with a new flavor of Dole Whip here at Aloha Isle: Raspberry! Hei Hei Cone It’s finished with sugar-piece “eyes” and a sour candy “comb.” Why, HELLO, Hei Hei! Hei Hei Cone The sour ribbon adds an extra bit of pucker to this already tart treat. There is no additional flavor, by the way, to the blue cone. It’s just your typical sugar cone. But that’s ok because there is so much fruity flavor packed within that cone that you’re not missing out on anything extra! The raspberry is a truly delicious flavor addition topping all that already-beloved pineapple Dole Whip. While we’re on that subject… you’ll notice on the menu that the Raspberry Dole Whip is NOT listed as a purchase on its own in a cup or float. You’ll only see it with the Hei Hei Cone. Aloha Isle Menu And, in fact, you won’t even see the raspberry Dole Whip machine, as it’s kept in the back. In speaking with a Cast Member (who had also inquired with her manager), the Raspberry Dole Whip is ONLY sold in the Hei Hei Cone… for now. We emphasize the “for now” because we got the impression that a change to this status might be on the way. (Though we want to emphasize “might,” as well ). Note that the Hei Hei Cone is noted as a “limited-time offering” (according to the Disney World online menu). So get to Aloha Isle as soon as you can to say “Aloha!” to this new treat, just in case! Disneyland’s donut game is strong, and that little, unassuming donut cart near Sleeping Beauty Castle is where the magi happens! You’ll remember that amazing Cappuccino donut, and the fun Matterhorn Macaroon donut as well as the Avalanche Donut and…of course…the DOLE WHIP donut! Today we’ve got another crave-worthy option for you! This… is the Chocolate and Peanut Butter Donut. Chocolate and Peanut Butter Donut Believe it or not, this donut is nearly the entire length of a Disneyland entree plate. It’s made even more substantial by the huge chunks of Peanut Butter Cup and Butterfinger that are pressed into the top. Chocolate and Peanut Butter Donut Needless to say, this is definitely share-able. And just how one eats the donut with those big pieces of candy on top is a mystery. We think this is a disassemble-and-eat situation. Chocolate and Peanut Butter Donut Once you get through the candy, the donut itself is a standard yeasted donut with chocolate glaze. But with this party going on atop the donut, the simple base is key. Chocolate and Peanut Butter Donut It’s also simple on the inside, where there’s… no filling. We suppose a little pudding or mousse on the inside would’ve been too much sweet on sweet on sweet, right? But we’d still be into it. Chocolate and Peanut Butter Donut Did we mention there’s candy? This week, we shared big plans on our multi-year transformation of Epcot, including plans for a play pavilion that’ll be unlike anything you’ve ever seen at the park. Disney World’s newest transportation option, the Disney Skyliner System, has been testing gondolas on the lines over the past couple of weeks. Now, it looks like they are testing the system at full capacity and speed near the Hollywood Studios Skyliner Station. If the name ABC Commissary conjures up memories of average meals scarfed down in a noisy dining room, we hear ya. But Disney’s Hollywood Studios is constantly revamping menus, so we stopped in to try a few new-to-us dinner options. And we gotta say: we were pretty surprised by what we found! ABC Commissary At present, ABC Commissary is offering slightly different menus for lunch and dinner. We grabbed shots of the lunch menu, too, so you can compare them. Only one of the dinner options we tried — the Barbecue Ribs Platter – is available at both meals, so keep that in mind when you’re decided when to eat here. So, here’s a look at Lunch: Lunch Menu Even the desserts vary from lunch to dinner! Lunch Menu Lunch Menu And now, for dinner! The dinner menu includes two burger options (one vegan), one salad, and a few more unique options. We wanted to dig into those to see if they’re worth making this quick service spot a more regular stop. Dinner Menu If you’re on the Disney Dining Plan, note that you can opt for wine, beer, or the Happy Daze — a specialty cocktail. Non-alcoholic beverage options are a snooze here as far as DDP value, but they’ll wet your whistle. Dinner Menu ABC Commissary also has these handy menus that give you a more close-up view of the dinner options. This is helpful if the overhead screens are a little tough for you to read. Be sure to request a handheld menu if you need one! Dinner Menu We went all in for three entrees, a side, and one dessert — all unique to the dinner menu, except for the ribs! Dinner at ABC Commissary It’s important to note that the dinner options are kind of all-over-the-place as far as style of cuisine. And that’s actually a good thing because if you’re stopping in with your crew, there’s likely to be an option for everyone. Dinner at ABC Commissary We went with the Southwestern Steak Fries as a side… but we’re starting with them, because they’re delicious. We do love a thick-cut fry, and these are nicely dusted with chili-lime seasoning, too. Southwest Fries Click here to read our first review of the Southwestern Steak Fries! You can just about make out the chipotle aioli, of which we could’ve used a bunch more. It’s tasty and adds a lot to the dish when you get some in a bite. Southwest Fries Queso fresco completes the dish an adds some light creaminess. Southwest Fries Overall, these are an awesome side or make a great snack if you’re still eating your way around the park! Southwest Fries The first entree we tried this visit is the Braised Beef and Enchilada. This was a surprise hit! Braised Beef and Enchilada The enchilada is great — packed with corn and vegetables and topped with fire-roasted chipotle sauce and queso fresco. Braised Beef and Enchilada The vegetables include peppers (green and red) and onion. And while the enchilada isn’t spicy like we might prefer, it was really flavorful. Braised Beef and Enchilada The braised beef here is such a surprise: fork tender and really, really tasty. Braised Beef and Enchilada It goes well with the chipotle sauce, which adds even more moisture to the already-tender meat. Braised Beef and Enchilada Overall, the Braised Beef and Enchilada is a solid and satisfying counter service meal! Definitely impressed with this one! Braised Beef and Enchilada But that wasn’t the only surprise of the meal! The BBQ Ribs Platter is also terrific — and HUGE! BBQ Ribs Platter The ribs consist of three slabs — more than enough to share! They’re dry-rubbed and then slathered with a smoky, sweet sauce that has a bit of a kick! BBQ Ribs Slab The ribs are well-cooked, with lots of tasty, crispy bits along the edges. And they aren’t dried out, which is a concern when ordering quick service ribs. BBQ Ribs slabs A couple of dill pickle slices garnish the ribs and provide a nice contrast. We would’ve loved to have a few more! Pickles and ribs Seasoned steak fries come with the ribs, and they’re a tasty addition. Steak Fries A tiny tub of cole slaw finishes off the meal. The BBQ Ribs Platter is one of the best values on the Disney Dining Plan for quick service — and we have to admit we are so surprised by the quality of these! This is definitely a lighter and more creative option, but it was also easily our least favorite of the meal. Shrimp Teriyaki Bowl Overall, it lacked flavor, and the rice was still hard. After a couple of bites, we were turning back to the beef and ribs dishes. Hard pass on the Teriyaki Shrimp Bowl, unfortunately. Shrimp Teriyaki Bowl For dessert we tried the Chocolate Banana Crispy, which honestly might as well be called the Chocolate Crispy, because the “Banana” part was totally lost here. Chocolate Banana Crispy Chocolate comes in many forms in this dish: this light milk chocolate glaze and some chocolate sprinkles create a pretty exterior. Chocolate Banana Crispy And it’s certainly something to look at, with lots of visible layers. Chocolate Banana Crispy Inside is even more impressive, with the chocolate mousse, cake, and crispies giving loads of textural contrast. But despite its unique appearance, this just wasn’t very good. Chocolate Banana Crispy The second dinnertime dessert — the Apple Almond Tart — is the same one we recently tried at Trolley Car Cafe. Definitely go for this one instead! And we’re glad because Hollywood Studios hasn’t exactly been known for its high-quality counter service eats, with lots of guests considering their meals at this park to be a total throw-away. Jaleo Construction in Disney Springs And though we don’t know an opening date, we do have some insight into the opening month for Jaleo, according to the website joseandres.com. On the site’s February-March calendar, we read the following: “Jaleo Disney Springs Grand Opening! The newest and largest Jaleo will open in Disney Springs in Florida this March. Hello from the Magic Kingdom! We spotted the return of a must-have popcorn bucket, construction updates, new merchandise, frames for the Princess Half Marathon medals, and more! Hello from Main Street, U.S.A.! Let’s get started with the park’s popcorn stands where a must-have popcorn bucket is back in stock! The Red Mickey Balloon Popcorn Buckets were back in stock at several popcorn stands around the park when we visited this week! We didn’t see the newer version of the Mickey Balloon Popcorn Bucket at any of the popcorn stands on the day we were there. As part of Mickey & Minnie’s Surprise Celebration you’ll find rarely-seen-in-the-parks characters in the Town Square area.
