This week, we shared big plans on our multi-year transformation of Epcot, including plans for a play pavilion that’ll be unlike anything you’ve ever seen at the park. This new space will be devoted to playful fun and feature an innovative city that’ll come to life under the dome of the un-named pavilion previously known as Wonders of Life. The pavilion’s city will be bursting with interactive experiences, your favorite Disney characters, hands-on activities and engaging entertainment when it opens just in time for the 50th anniversary of Walt Disney World Resort! Disney World’s newest transportation option, the Disney Skyliner System, has been testing gondolas on the lines over the past couple of weeks. Now, it looks like they are testing the system at full capacity and speed near the Hollywood Studios Skyliner Station. We can even see some of the artwork on the gondolas through the tarps. Every time we see the gondolas running on the line we get more excited for the Skyliner System to open this fall! Dole Whip and Mickey Lollipop Magnets Naturally we’re starting with the ultimate frozen treat: a Dole Whip! Peep that Adventureland logo on the ‘cup’! Dole Whip Magnet And we love the swirls of the Mickey Lollipop Magnet! The color combination is fun here, too. If the name ABC Commissary conjures up memories of average meals scarfed down in a noisy dining room, we hear ya. But Disney’s Hollywood Studios is constantly revamping menus, so we stopped in to try a few new-to-us dinner options. And we gotta say: we were pretty surprised by what we found! ABC Commissary At present, ABC Commissary is offering slightly different menus for lunch and dinner. We grabbed shots of the lunch menu, too, so you can compare them. Only one of the dinner options we tried — the Barbecue Ribs Platter – is available at both meals, so keep that in mind when you’re decided when to eat here. So, here’s a look at Lunch: Lunch Menu Even the desserts vary from lunch to dinner! Lunch Menu Lunch Menu And now, for dinner! The dinner menu includes two burger options (one vegan), one salad, and a few more unique options. We wanted to dig into those to see if they’re worth making this quick service spot a more regular stop. Dinner Menu If you’re on the Disney Dining Plan, note that you can opt for wine, beer, or the Happy Daze — a specialty cocktail. Non-alcoholic beverage options are a snooze here as far as DDP value, but they’ll wet your whistle. Dinner Menu ABC Commissary also has these handy menus that give you a more close-up view of the dinner options. This is helpful if the overhead screens are a little tough for you to read. Be sure to request a handheld menu if you need one! Dinner Menu We went all in for three entrees, a side, and one dessert — all unique to the dinner menu, except for the ribs! Dinner at ABC Commissary It’s important to note that the dinner options are kind of all-over-the-place as far as style of cuisine. And that’s actually a good thing because if you’re stopping in with your crew, there’s likely to be an option for everyone. Dinner at ABC Commissary We went with the Southwestern Steak Fries as a side… but we’re starting with them, because they’re delicious. We do love a thick-cut fry, and these are nicely dusted with chili-lime seasoning, too. Southwest Fries Click here to read our first review of the Southwestern Steak Fries! You can just about make out the chipotle aioli, of which we could’ve used a bunch more. It’s tasty and adds a lot to the dish when you get some in a bite. Southwest Fries Queso fresco completes the dish an adds some light creaminess. Southwest Fries Overall, these are an awesome side or make a great snack if you’re still eating your way around the park! Southwest Fries The first entree we tried this visit is the Braised Beef and Enchilada. This was a surprise hit! Braised Beef and Enchilada The enchilada is great — packed with corn and vegetables and topped with fire-roasted chipotle sauce and queso fresco. Braised Beef and Enchilada The vegetables include peppers (green and red) and onion. And while the enchilada isn’t spicy like we might prefer, it was really flavorful. Braised Beef and Enchilada The braised beef here is such a surprise: fork tender and really, really tasty. Braised Beef and Enchilada It goes well with the chipotle sauce, which adds even more moisture to the already-tender meat. Braised Beef and Enchilada Overall, the Braised Beef and Enchilada is a solid and satisfying counter service meal! Definitely impressed with this one! Braised Beef and Enchilada But that wasn’t the only surprise of the meal! The BBQ Ribs Platter is also terrific — and HUGE! BBQ Ribs Platter The ribs consist of three slabs — more than enough to share! They’re dry-rubbed and then slathered with a smoky, sweet sauce that has a bit of a kick! BBQ Ribs Slab The ribs are well-cooked, with lots of tasty, crispy bits along the edges. And they aren’t dried out, which is a concern when ordering quick service ribs. BBQ Ribs slabs A couple of dill pickle slices garnish the ribs and provide a nice contrast. We would’ve loved to have a few more! Pickles and ribs Seasoned steak fries come with the ribs, and they’re a tasty addition. Steak Fries A tiny tub of cole slaw finishes off the meal. The BBQ Ribs Platter is one of the best values on the Disney Dining Plan for quick service — and we have to admit we are so surprised by the quality of these! This is definitely a lighter and more creative option, but it was also easily our least favorite of the meal. Shrimp Teriyaki Bowl Overall, it lacked flavor, and the rice was still hard. After a couple of bites, we were turning back to the beef and ribs dishes. Hard pass on the Teriyaki Shrimp Bowl, unfortunately. Shrimp Teriyaki Bowl For dessert we tried the Chocolate Banana Crispy, which honestly might as well be called the Chocolate Crispy, because the “Banana” part was totally lost here. Chocolate Banana Crispy Chocolate comes in many forms in this dish: this light milk chocolate glaze and some chocolate sprinkles create a pretty exterior. Chocolate Banana Crispy And it’s certainly something to look at, with lots of visible layers. Chocolate Banana Crispy Inside is even more impressive, with the chocolate mousse, cake, and crispies giving loads of textural contrast. But despite its unique appearance, this just wasn’t very good. Chocolate Banana Crispy The second dinnertime dessert — the Apple Almond Tart — is the same one we recently tried at Trolley Car Cafe. Definitely go for this one instead! Click here to see what we’re talking about! Apple Almond Tart So color us surprised, because ABC Commissary has added two stellar dishes to its dinner menu! And we’re glad because Hollywood Studios hasn’t exactly been known for its high-quality counter service eats, with lots of guests considering their meals at this park to be a total throw-away. We are so excited for Jaleo by Chef José Andrés to open in Disney Springs! Jaleo Construction in Disney Springs And though we don’t know an opening date, we do have some insight into the opening month for Jaleo, according to the website joseandres.com. On the site’s February-March calendar, we read the following: “Jaleo Disney Springs Grand Opening! The newest and largest Jaleo will open in Disney Springs in Florida this March. The 22,000-square foot restaurant – the fifth Jaleo in the country – will feature Spanish favorites from José’s flagship restaurant in D.C., along with an expanded menu of wood-fired paellas and grilled meats.” Jaleo sign in Disney Springs So, it looks like we can look forward to welcoming Jaleo next month, and we can’t wait! We didn’t see the newer version of the Mickey Balloon Popcorn Bucket at any of the popcorn stands on the day we were there. Last weekend, the Disneyland Resort commemorated Black History Month with the 10th anniversary of “Celebrate Gospel.” Fifteen guest gospel choirs from across Southern California performed at Disney California Adventure park, engaging guests through powerful music, call-and-response and live band instrumentals. “Celebrate Gospel” was created at the Disneyland Resort with the assistance of PULSE, one of several diversity resource groups for cast members that support and enhance Disneyland Resort strategies. As part of this year’s event, Disney Ambassador Rafa Barron shared about The Walt Disney Company’s grant of $1.5 million to UNCF (United Negro College Fund) earlier this year. JAMBO from Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge! Greetings from Animal Kingdom Lodge! We’re checking out all the latest eats and activities in this beautiful Deluxe Resort. And we have a few friends along for the ride… Kidani Savanna Kidani Savanna Here we go! Jiko – The Cooking Place You’ll find some new items on the menu if a visit to Jiko — The Cooking Place is in your future. Jiko As the Lodge’s Signature Restaurant, seasonal changes are always in store for the menu. And these currently include a new Spice Route-inspired Squash Soup and Mushroom Flatbread under the Appetizers, and Cocoa Crusted Bison for a new Entrée. Current Jiko Menu These take the place of the Pear and Watermelon Salad, Green Tomato Gazpacho, Heirloom Tomato Flatbread, Snake River Wagyu Strip Loin, and Durham Ranch Elk Loin. Note that Wagyu is also not currently listed as part of the Macaroni and Cheese enhancements. The Mara We’re focusing on the sweet stuff, though, at Animal Kingdom Lodge’s Counter Service restaurant, The Mara! On our visit, we were surprised to see that Minnie’s Cherry Cordial Cupcake was still available well after Valentine’s Day (the day it was scheduled to end as an offering). (So if you’re planning to visit during the upcoming Spring Break time, take note!) Remember when Dockside Diner (back when it was, you know, Min & Bill’s Dockside Diner) in Hollywood Studios served super awesome Seasonal Milkshakes like the Cinnamon Sweet Churro Milkshake, the Black Forest Milkshake, the Blue Milk Shake (‘cuz Star Wars), and more? Dockside Diner Well, we’re happy to say that fun seasonal flavors are back, and they’re starting with the debut of the Cookie Milkshake! Cookie Milkshake Now, before we dig (or sip) in, we should mention… “Seasonal” Shakes have been listed on the menu for much of the time even since the Blue Milk Shake left. (You can see the Shakes listed under the S’mores Brownie in the menu pic below.) Dockside Diner Menu But that “Seasonal” flavor has typically been a fine-but-not-too-exciting Strawberry or Chocolate Shake (save for a Pumpkin Shake for a few days over the holidays). But following Shakes like the Caramel Apple Shake… well, those were kind of a bummer. But let’s take a look at the current Seasonal Shake, the Cookie Milkshake. Cookie Milkshake By the name, we expected your typical cookies-and-cream Oreo-style shake. But, nope! Cookie Milkshake This one’s topped — AND blended — with actual chocolate chip cookie crumbles with a vanilla shake base! Oh, and there’s some whipped cream on there, too . Cookie Milkshake Why not have your cookies and milk all-in-one, after all? Over-the-top, unique, cool, and delicious. THIS is what we remember from Dockside Diner! And in speaking with a Cast Member we learned that they’re hoping to incorporate more fun flavors in the future. So we’ll be keeping an eye out for you! Helllllllllllo from Disney Springs! We are bringing you a review from one of the most popular spots to grab a light bite and cocktail, Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar! We discovered they had some new items join the line-up recently, and we had to swing by to try them out! Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar First up, we had to sample some of the seasonal libations. The bartender let us know the Old-Fashioned and the Florida Mule tend to stay on the menu, however the top two are swapped out every month or so. Seasonal Libations Menu The bartender also let us know that the Old-fashioned is fantastic and made with that exclusive-to-Disney-World bourbon. She sold us! We opted for Jock’s Old-Fashioned and the French 75. The French 75 is made of Hangar 1 Vodka, St. Germaine, Prosecco, and a lime. This is a pretty good drink if you’re a Prosecco fan and want something bubbly. It’s not a super-sweet drink, which I loved, but if you prefer sweet drinks, there are several rum and juice based cocktails here that will be a better fit. Overall, I would absolutely grab this again, especially on a hot day when I need those refreshing bubbles. Jock’s Old-Fashioned and French 75 Next up, the Jock’s Old Fashioned. No you’re not seeing things, this glass is sliding sideways! This cocktail is made of Knob Creek Disney Select 120 Proof Bourbon, Cointreau Orange Liqueur, Aromatic Bitters, Orange Bitters, Simple Syrup, and Soda Water. Jock’s Old Fashioned I am so glad we took the bartender’s advice on this one – this was truly an awesome Old-fashioned. You could definitely taste that Select Bourbon, but it’s balanced nicely by the not-too-sweet syrup and Cointreau. Honestly, I wish all Disney Old-Fashioneds tasted like this. Disney Select Bourbon Now that we’ve sampled some delicious cocktails, it’s time to test out the new eats! Jock Lindsey’s New Food While old classics like the pretzel and sliders remain steady on the menu, we opted for some of the new items! We tried the Lomo Saltado – Peruvian Flank Steak, Shisahk Seared Cheese, and Chen’s BBQ Pork Skewers. Peruvian Flank Steak First up, the Lomo Saltado – Peruvian Flank Steak. Other variations of this item have been on the menu in the past, but this is a new iteration. This version is Grilled Flank Steak and Piquillo Peppers, with Pickled Onions, Crispy Potatoes, and comes with a Tamari-Lime dressing and Yellow Pepper Aioli as well as a fresh lime to squeeze on top. Flank Steak Close-up This was pretty decent! The meat was cooked well, and the pickled vegetables balance it nicely. They aren’t too vinegar-y either! The crispy potatoes add an awesome crunch, but not much flavor. Definitely squeeze that fresh lime on top to elevate the dish! Overall, this is a good shareable (or light meal for one) that I would try again. Shishak Seared Cheese We then moved to Shishak Seared Cheese. This dish is Warm Halloumi Cheese, served with a salad made of Mediterranean Tomato, Cucumber, and Pita Chips. Seared Cheese Close-up As far as vegetarian options go, this is an excellent choice. It’s certainly a little different, and obviously much lighter, than other popular vegetarian dishes like pastas or pretzels. The salad was crisp and fresh, and the pita chips added an awesome crunch. The cheese itself doesn’t have a ton of flavor, if anything it’s a bit salty on its own. But paired with a marinated tomato and cucumber, it’s a refreshing dish when you’re in the mood for something lighter (vegetarian or not). Chen’s BBQ Pork Skewers Lastly, we tried Chen’s BBQ Pork Skewers. This is Grilled Pork Belly in Gojuchang Pepper Sauce, and served with Pickled Vegetables, Cilantro, and Bibb Lettuce. It also comes with a spicy dipping sauce. BBQ Pork Belly Close-up The idea of the dish is to make little “tacos” with the pork belly and bibb lettuce. Honestly, I thought this would be my least favorite of the dishes, but SURPRISE! It was my favorite, hands down. The pork belly was cooked perfectly and the pepper sauce adds a lot of flavor but not a huge kick. The dipping sauce however, does pack some heat – in a good way! It’s hot, but still has great flavor, as opposed to being hot for hot’s sake. Overall, this was a fun and unique dish, that I would certainly order again. Once again, the food and drinks at Hangar Bar are winners. The cocktails always seem to deliver, and I’ll certainly be back for that Old-fashioned. The bites are unique, and these choices are great for when you want something delicious and packed with flavor, but also a little lighter. Scrumptious surprises await guests visiting Disney Springs West Side this weekend during a pop-up event celebrating Disney D-Lish, a new whimsical merchandise collection that celebrates the fun of Disney Parks food. Now through Feb. 24 from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. daily, you can be among the first to shop new apparel presented in specially designed, food-inspired packaging. Here’s a look at what’s being served during the limited time experience at Walt Disney World Resort. Inspired by a popular retail trend of turning food into merchandise, Disney D-Lish products were designed to remind guests of favorite theme park treats. “The sights and smells of food that guests love from Disney Parks is now distinctly Disney merchandise,” explained Katie Thompson, a Merchandise Strategy Manager who was part of a team that cooked up the idea for this tasty collection. Through research, the merchandise team saw that food-shaped products were a hot dish. Using the findings, Disney Creative Group artists created a smorgasbord of Disney food-inspired art that became products created especially for Disney Parks. As Epcot’s Festival of the Arts prepares to close on February 25 signs the Flower and Garden Festival opening on March 6 are popping up! Our latest visit to Epcot saw some Flower and Garden food booths and topiaries being set up. But, that isn’t all, we also saw some construction progress, new merchandise, and some awesome chalk art! Hello from Epcot! We’ll start out with some Festival of the Arts chalk art — and deals! What’s New with Epcot’s Festival of the Arts This piece of chalk art is one of the many reasons we love the Festival of the Arts. It feels like this is a scene from the movie Ratatouille brought to life! Check out Remy making that ratatouille! They sold these a long time ago, we do not know if these muffins are making a permanent return or not. A wild adventure awaits little ones at Disney’s Animal Kingdom with the Wilderness Explorers challenge. It’s one of my favorites activities because it engages kids to explore the park in a playful way. The self-guided scavenger hunt, based on the loveable Russell, from the Disney•Pixar film “Up!”, invites kid to complete a bunch of fun tasks so they can earn up to 30 badge stickers for their activity booklet. And like Russell says, “the Wilderness must be explored CA-CA! RAAWWRR.” Let’s see how these little ones became wilderness experts during their trek through Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
