Featured Artisan of the Month: Brittney Lee Brittney creates the kind of charming and effervescent characters that can leap to life in a wide variety of applications from traditional animation, CG animation and book illustration to stunning fine art cut paper sculptures. As a visual development artist at the Walt Disney Animation Studios, she is well-known for her work on “Frozen” and “Zootopia.” Appearance Dates: March 2-3 & 23-24 from 2-5 p.m. Artist in Residence: Aggie Cheung This designer, illustrator and crafter was born and raised in Hong Kong and earned her bachelor of fine arts degree in animation and illustration from San Jose State University. She specializes in conceptual games and children’s book illustrations. Her passion project is The Little Red House, a sweetly-illustrated stationery company, to remind people of their childhood moments. Appearance Dates: March 9-10, 16-17, 23-24, 30-31 from 5-9 p.m. Artist Showcase Jerrod Maruyama is an illustrator who also studied at San Jose State University and specializes in character designs and all things cute. Her work appears in many books, magazines and merchandise lines. David McNeley, is a self-taught artist from Huntington Beach who specializes in acrylic paint. Clean simplicity and hidden surprises characterize his paintings with American mid-century modern styles. Inspired by Disney artists who came before him, Mcbiff has created a style that is both familiar and enthusiastically new. Appearance Dates: March 16-17 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Ashley Taylor is a local designer and illustrator who creates the Disney Doodles for the Disney Parks Blog. From the moment she saw Sleeping Beauty, she became enchanted with the idea of becoming an artist. Inspired by legendary artists like Mary Blair and Eyvind Earle, Ashley has worked with Disney, Marvel and Lucasfilm. Happy first day of March! Of course, a new month means a new Hot Diggity Dog of the Month at Magic Kingdom’s Casey’s Corner! Corned Beef Hash Hot Dog And, as the month when we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, the Hot Diggity Dog is themed accordingly with the Corned Beef Hash Hot Dog! As a reminder, the Featured Hot Dog of the Month can be purchased as a Foot-Long ($13.49) or regular sized ($11.49), both served with fries. Or you can get the specialty toppings on the Loaded Fries of the Month ($6.49). The Corned Beef Hash Hot Dog is topped with crispy potatoes, sautéed corned beef, cabbage, onions, and carrots. And it’s all topped with a drizzle of Blarney Sauce! Corned Beef Hash Hot Diggity Dog of the Month And we were pumped to try it! Unfortunately, though, even with all those toppings… would you believe it lacked flavor? Corned Beef Hash Hot Diggity Dog of the Month From the corned beef, to the crispy potatoes and all the other accompaniments including the Blarney Sauce (which was kind of like a Thousand Island… except without much flavor), it was just lacking in every way. It was disappointing because the ingredients are so promising and we’ve enjoyed other featured Hot Dogs of the Month so much, but this one just didn’t cut it, we’re bummed to say. In October, we celebrated $5 million in grants awarded by the Disney Conservation Fund (DCF) in 2018 to protect the magic of nature around the world. A very exciting part of that was applauding 13 people across the globe as Disney Conservation Heroes for their tireless efforts to save wildlife and inspire communities to take part in conservation projects. In recognition of their dedication, each Hero and the nominating organization will share a $1,500 award. Throughout the year, we will be highlighting the stories of these incredible people on the @DisneyAnimals social media pages, but we wanted to share an example today. One of this year’s awardees is The Gorilla Rehabilitation and Conservation Education Center (GRACE) Team. Located in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the all-Congolese GRACE Team manages the Center’s operations and provides life-saving care to orphaned and Critically Endangered Grauer’s gorillas. Last year, when safety concerns forced the community near GRACE to flee, the GRACE staff decided to stay, risking their personal security to protect the gorillas. Despite facing unimaginable challenges, the GRACE Team remains dedicated to protecting Grauer’s gorillas and engaging their community in saving wildlife. The GRACE Team is just one example of the amazing people being recognized this year as Disney Conservation Heroes. From safeguarding natural resources, to spearheading environmental education programs and protecting species on the brink of extinction, this year’s Heroes have again inspired us through their commitment to going above and beyond to ensure wildlife and wild places are protected in their communities. Magic Kingdom is celebrating the 90th Anniversary of Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse in a BIG WAY with Mickey and Minnie’s Surprise Celebration! The party kicked off in January and will run through September 30, 2019. Everyone’s favorite couple: Mickey and Minnie! And the emphasis is on the surprise, because Magic Kingdom is surprising us with new treats throughout the year as part of the celebration! Today brings a new Waffle Sundae, new Whoopie Pies, and an adorable new Popcorn Bucket… so let’s dig in! Mickey and MINNIE (!!!) Waffle Sundae Stop by Sleepy Hollow Refreshments in Liberty Square to find the Mickey and Minnie Waffle Sundae! Mickey and Minnie Waffle Sundae Sign Now, we’re (happily) used to seeing Mickey Waffles around Disney World… but Minnie Waffles?! This really is a cause for celebration! Minnie Waffles This sundae — according to the sign — features Mickey and Minnie-shaped waffles, a scoop of vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce, whipped cream, sprinkles, and a cherry. However! On our FIRST visit (there’s more of a story to come here…), we received TWO Minnie Waffles, and no Mickey Waffle. Minnie Waffle But later in the day we stopped by Sleepy Hollow again. You see, the Sundae comes with chocolate sauce automatically. But we just couldn’t get enough of Minnie’s cute face, so we wanted you to see it in full, without the chocolate sauce. Minnie and Mickey Waffle Sundae And this time, Mickey came along for the fun (in the form of a Mickey Waffle, of course)! Warm waffles served in combination with cool ice cream and a huge gob of whipped cream is always tasty and fun… but especially so now that the Minnie Waffle has arrived! Mickey and Minnie Waffle Sundae I wonder where she’ll spring up next? Mickey and Minnie Whoopie Pies At Tony’s Town Square Restaurant (Table Service) and Columbia Harbour House (Quick Service), they’re serving up Mickey and Minnie Whoopie Pies! Mickey and Minnie Whoopie Pies At Columbia Harbour House, we received both together for $4.99. (They’re also designated as a Disney Dining Plan snack credit.) Mickey and Minnie Whoopie Pies Each is a red velvet whoopie pie filled with cream cheese icing then topped off with either Mickey shorts or Minnie’s bow made out of chocolate. Mickey and Minnie Whoopie Pies The Red Velvet flavor is pretty intense! Minnie Whoopie Pie Mickey Whoopie Pie And the cream cheese icing center and the chocolate toppings melted really quickly. Whoopie Pie Center These may have been just freshly prepared and the cakes a bit too warm. But, in any case, we preferred the flavors of the Frog Prince Whoopie Pie which you can find — at least for the next few days — at Liberty Square Market for Mardi Gras. Mickey’s Birthday Popcorn Bucket We also spotted this new celebratory Mickey’s Birthday-themed Refillable Popcorn Bucket! Our understanding was that the Mickey Confetti Pretzel from Mickey’s 90th Birthday celebration weekend was also supposed to make a return today to Tortuga Tavern, along with two new Minnie-themed Sundaes at the Plaza Ice Cream Parlor. However, we were informed by Cast Members at both locations that those treats were — at press time — unavailable. But we’re never gone from Magic Kingdom for too long, so — as always — we’ll let you know what new treats we spot on our next trip! And so the party continues! Guest-favorite, Disney character-inspired large sculpted eggs have also returned to the resort for a one-of-a-kind photo opp. The hit “Duffy and Friends” show returns to Celebration Square through April 10, welcoming guests to join in upbeat dancing with beloved characters. From April 11 through May 31, the parade route near Mickey Avenue will be home to the new “Disney Color-Fest: A Street Party!” led by Mickey, Minnie and Donald with festive floats that turn the street into a grand colorful celebration. The start of spring brings fresh food and beverage offerings throughout the resort, with StellaLou as the inspiration for colorful treats from blueberry cupcakes and blackcurrant cake to lavender ice cream, goblet drinks, cotton candy and popcorn buckets. Mickey and Pals Market Café is debuting the first-ever Colorful Minnie Afternoon Tea, while Wandering Moon Restaurant and Aurora Restaurant add delicious new seasonal dishes to their menus. Nature blooms in vivid color this time of year at the resort, as cherry and plum blossoms, apple floral archways, tulips, roses and more transform the landscape into a fantastic natural wonderland. Guests can take a stroll around the beautiful Wishing Star Lake and take an educational botany class guided by experts, plus enjoy an Earth Month Fair when it kicks off April 12 in Disneytown. Guests looking to spring into the new season back at home can choose from more than 50 special merchandise items featuring bright colors and fresh designs. Exclusive bunny ears, colorful flower headbands and a special egg pin series will serve as perfect accessories for even the most stylish of spring outfits. Pixar Pier, the reimagined land in Disney California Adventure park, shares the stories and characters of Disney•Pixar films with exciting attractions, themed neighborhoods and fun eateries. Today, we’re excited to share Jessie’s Critter Carousel will open in April! Mosey on over to a giant toy carousel starring Jessie, the yodeling cowgirl and a friendly bunch of desert critters for a rootin’, tootin’ romp. Inspired by the “Toy Story” films, saddle up on a whimsical snake, armadillo, turtle, bunny and more from the world of Woody’s Roundup. The Deconstructed Teriyaki Chicken Musibi with Pineapple Relish (and, frankly, everything else) impressed us at the new booth. Deconstructed Teriyaki Chicken Musubi Musubi is super popular in Disneyland right now (we’ve seen other versions at Tangaroa Terrace and Bengal Barbecue). This dish was a great surprise! Anaheim Chile Relleno Bites with Salsa Verde at Golden Dreams Another vegetarian option, the Anaheim Chile Relleno Bites with Salsa Verde is served at Golden Dreams. Anaheim Chile Relleno Bites These are crazy flavorful — rich, cheesy, and savory! Chocolate-Peanut-Caramel Parfait at Golden Dreams One of our favorite festival sweets, the Chocolate-Peanut-Caramel Parfait is also at Golden Dreams. Chocolate Peanut Caramel Parfait Another gluten-free option, this dessert is delicious! It’s basically a deconstructed Snickers Bar in an adorable little cup! GET IT. Fiscalini White Cheddar Lager Soup served in a Mini Boudin Sourdough Bowl at Nuts About Cheese The Soup at Nuts About Cheese is another winner! Basically, if anything is ever served in a bread bowl at a DCA festival you can almost guarantee it’s going to be on our list. They’re all amazing! Ham and Vella Jack Cheese Pinwheel with Smoked Pistachios at Nuts about Cheese We couldn’t wait to dig into the Ham and Vella Jack Cheese Pinwheel with Smoked Pistachios at Nuts About Cheese! Ham and Vella Jack Cheese Pinwheel with Smoked Pistacios The super flaky pastry packed with smokey and flavorful ham and that rich sharp cheese is doused in what seems like more of that cheese soup from the bread bowl! The whole thing means a flavor explosion in your mouth! I predict this will be one of the MUST-GETS from this year’s festival! Meyer Lemon Ginger Mule at Citrus Grove Cool and refreshing, the Meyer Lemon Ginger Mule continues to wow us at Citrus Grove. Meyer Lemon Ginger Mule Once again, the pucker from the lemon and the zest from the ginger make this drink memorable. Cheers! Strawberry Float with Vanilla Ice Cream, Whipped Cream, and Crunchy Cereal Garnish at Berry Basket At Berry Basket, it was love at first sight — AND first TASTE — with this Strawberry Float. Strawberry Float with Vanilla Ice Cream, Whipped Cream, and Crunchy Cereal Garnish Yes, it’s super sweet. Basically a bunch of ice cream doused in strawberry jam, so be prepared. But the strawberry flavor is powerful! Plus, Cap’n Crunch. You’re kids will be crazy for this one! Ghost Pepper Mac & Cheese with Chili Cheese Corn Chip Dust at Peppers Cali-Ente With hot frito dush and Ghost Pepper (oh my!!), the Mac & Cheese really caught our attention at Peppers Cali-Ente. Ghost Pepper Mac and Cheese While it’s spicy, it’s not “kick you in the throat” spicy, so it should be accessible to just about everyone except the MOST spice averse folks. We’re all accustomed to the limited food offerings of most Walt Disney World pool bars, but lately we’ve spotted several pool bar menus that have expanded. While we always welcome bigger (and hopefully better!) menus at these convenient spots, we’re not sure how long these riches will stick around. Leaping Horse Libations Typically massive crowds descend on the World this time of year for Spring Break, and these menu changes could be a response to larger-than-average groups of pool-goers. So far we’ve seen expanded menus at Uzima Springs Pool Bar at Animal Kingdom Lodge, Leaping Horse Libations at BoardWalk Inn and Villas, Hurricane Hanna’s at the Yacht & Beach Club, and Gurgling Suitcase Libations at Old Key West. We spotted this construction across from the Anandapur Theater back in November — right where the new show will be performed! For a limited time starting this weekend, a sneak peek of Disney’s all-new grand live-action adventure “Dumbo” can be seen aboard the ships of the Disney Cruise Line fleet, as part of the Walt Disney Presents attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and in the Main Street Opera House at Disneyland park. Each theme park location will also feature a life-size replica of Dumbo, which should make for some really cute photos. Be sure to share them with #Dumbo!
