  7. It looks like guests will have to wait at least a few more months for their next ride around Tomorrowland on the PeopleMover. Closed PeopleMover When Magic Kingdom reopened to guests in July, we noticed that the Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover was not running. While there were signs outside of the attraction informing guests of the temporary closure, Disney did not announce an expected reopening timeframe. But as of this morning, the Disney World refurbishment calendar has been updated to indicate an extended closure of the attraction. On the calendar, the PeopleMover is listed as “closed for refurbishment” from now through October 31st. Magic Kingdom Refurbishment Calendar for the Date of October 31st Currently, the PeopleMover is no longer listed on the refurbishment calendar starting on November 1st, however the attraction availability is subject to change. Magic Kingdom Refurbishment Calendar for the Date of November 1st While Disney hasn’t announced specific details regarding the reason for the closure, the PeopleMover was unexpectedly shut down back in March, in the days leading up to the park closure. We’ll keep an eye out for any additional information about the status of this Tomorrowland staple, so stay tuned! Will Magic Kingdom be decorated for Halloween this year? Here’s what we know! 8. We’ve been finding some pretty unusual items at Disney World lately (like the Forky hairbrush). And did you see these skincare masks we found at EPCOT that will make your face look like a cat or a dog?! Will you be a cat? Will you be a dog? But today we learned an important lesson: strange Disney merchandise isn’t made exclusively for humans. Dogs are now getting some pretty unique items at Disney World too! Case in point: check out the Disney dog socks we spotted at Disney Springs today! Dog Socks We’ve seen Disney food bowls, collars, and toys, but dog SOCKS?! That’s a new one even for well-seasoned shoppers such as ourselves! We guess it kinda makes sense, though! After all, we wouldn’t want our best friend’s tootsies to get cold! Check out this Minnie Mouse-inspired set of dog socks… Dog Socks …which includes FOUR socks instead of two (for obvious reasons!). We love how they even have little grip “beans” on the bottom so your poochie won’t go slippin’ and slidin’! Pick ’em up for $14.99! Dog Socks Mickey Mouse-patterned dog socks for $14.99 are available too (and both styles come in a variety of different sizes)! Dog Socks We also spotted the Love Mickey spirit jersey for dogs for $36.99! It coordinates back to the short-sleeved spirit jersey for hoomans we saw released during Pride Month! 9. When Disney World presented the option of canceling Annual Passes, it left many of Disney World’s biggest fans with a TOUGH decision. And there may be some of you still grappling with the choice. Walt Disney World Annual Passholder The final day to opt into cancellation of the pass is Tuesday, August 11th, and passes will no longer be valid for entry beginning August 12th if you choose to cancel, so time is running out! While we don’t know your exact situation and the decision is ultimately yours, we can do our best to help you weigh the pros and cons as to whether or not you should cancel your Disney World Annual Pass. What are your options? Disney extended the option to Passholders to cancel their current Passes back in mid-June, ahead of the park reopening. At the time, Disney stated that Passholders can choose between receiving an added one-month extension to their Pass (on top of adding back the days lost due to the closure), or they could choose to cancel the pass. We will get into more specifics below. © Disney Keep in mind that, as we said, Disney ALREADY extended Annual Passes based on the number of days the parks were closed. So, for example, if your Florida Resident Disney Weekday Select Annual Pass’ original expiration date was August 1, it will now expire on November 26, 117 days after the original date, plus the additional month, if you choose to keep your pass (so your pass would be valid until the end of December). All Annual Passholders who choose to take the one-month extension (instead of canceling) will see the change processed and reflected on their Pass sometime in October 2020. MMRR Annual Passholder MagicBand Now, there are some slightly different factors to consider depending on if you paid for your Annual Pass in full, or if you are on the monthly payment plan. If you paid in full… If you paid for your Pass in full and decide to cancel, you will receive a partial refund based on the amount of time left on your pass. Remember that the pass will no longer be valid for entry beginning August 12, so you could estimate your partial refund amount based on the time between August 12 and your most up-to-date expiration date. Annual Passholder Sticker If you are on the monthly payment plan… If you are on the monthly payment plan and you choose to cancel, it’ll look a bit different. Disney will waive any payments due on your Pass after August 11, and any payments made between July 11 and August 11 will be refunded. Annual Passholder Chef Minnie Coaster It seems like Disney has already been testing the monthly payment system, as back in July many Annual Passholders on the plan were suddenly charged for the four months’ worth of time the parks were closed. This has since been rectified. Read more about the options Disney World has given to their Annual Passholders here! Does it make sense financially to cancel your pass? Depending on how much time is left on your Annual Pass, you may be faced with a nominal or a rather hefty refund coming your way, should you choose to cancel. For example, if you purchased a Disney Platinum Pass (non-Florida resident) in full at the current 2020 price of $1195.00, and your pass does not expire for another nine months, you’d receive a refund of $896.25. Passholder Entrance sign If you’re a Florida resident and purchased a Silver Annual Pass last year in full for $519.00 (before the price increase), and your pass expires in four months, you will receive a refund of $173.00. That’s still a decent chunk of change! Annual Passholder 2020 MagicBand Should you choose to cancel your pass that you paid for in full, Disney has stated that Passholders will receive their refunds on their original form of payment in mid to late September. Epcot Entrance If you were on the monthly payment plan, it’s a little easier to do the math to calculate how much money you will save. You would simply multiply your monthly payment amount times the number of months left on your pass, and you will have the total amount that will be waived after August 11. Have you already canceled your Pass or are considering canceling? Click here to see when and how you can expect your refund to appear! Will the Park Pass System work FOR or AGAINST you? The Park Pass Reservation System is one tricky little program and one that has caused some serious strife for Annual Passholders since its rollout. Annual Passholder Availability Before July 14. Much of August was already filled up. Park Pass Reservation availability has filled up MUCH faster for Annual Passholders than for any other Guest type. The trouble here is that local Annual Passholders or those who can more easily take a last-minute trip to Disney World can no longer simply say “I want to visit the parks this weekend.” In most cases, you may not be able to get a reservation until sometime over a month later (especially if you want to visit Disney’s Hollywood Studios). So, one could justifiably say “what’s the point of being a Passholder?” if you can no longer spontaneously visit the parks whenever you please. Crowds trying to enter Disney’s Hollywood Studios The Park Pass System specifically seems to be working AGAINST local Passholders who do not need hotel accommodations. This is because a Passholder with a hotel reservation can simply book a Park Pass Reservation as a Resort Guest, which has significantly more reservation availability. ©Screenshot From Disney Park Pass It looks like Disney is periodically adding more Park Pass availability to Passholders, but we would not count on that as a guarantee if the date you want to visit is full. This suspicion seemed to be confirmed by Disney CEO Bob Chapek, who during the most recent Quarterly Earnings Call noted that unclaimed reservations were being given to local Passholders at the last minute. Cinderella Castle Because of the overall lower availability for Annual Passholders, you will need to plan your trips to Disney World much farther ahead of time than you’re used to. The spontaneity of using your Pass isn’t what it used to be, especially if you live nearby and are more used to last-minute trips to the parks. Read more about what we’ve learned about Disney World’s current Guest percentages since reopening here! And then there are all the OTHER things to consider! Deciding whether or not to cancel your Disney World Annual Pass is a much bigger decision than how much money you’ll be refunded, and even bigger than the new Park Pass Reservation System. Beyond the objective variables that include financial implications and reservations, there are a ton of other factors to consider that only YOU can place a value on. Princess Promenade in EPCOT For example, how safe do YOU feel going to Disney World right now? Are the parks going to be enjoyable for you and your family, regardless of how much money you’ll save or how easy it is to get a Park Pass Reservation? After crunching the numbers and mastering the Reservation System, if you don’t feel safe, you may not enjoy your time at Disney World until things start to resemble some level of “normalcy.” Health and Safety Signage From what we have seen and experienced ourselves, Disney World is doing quite a bit to make sure the Guest experience is safe in these unprecedented times. One of the most noticeable health measures is their face mask policy. While this may add a level of security for many Guests, others may feel like the masks diminish their overall experience at the parks. Tie-dye Mickey Face Mask There are also all of the reduced offerings to consider. If your Disney World vacations are all about meeting the characters and watching the fireworks every night, you’ll be out of luck for a while. Casey’s Corner is Still Closed To give you a QUICK recap, Disney World has temporarily suspended fireworks, parades, character meet and greets, traditional character dining (with the modified exceptions of Topolino’s Terrance and Garden Grill), as well as the Disney Dining Plan, FastPass+, and Park Hopping. At this time, we do not know when Disney will bring these back. Mickey and Pluto! Despite these cons, there are also a couple of significant pros to consider. It’s important to point out that for the most part, thanks to the limited park capacity, the crowd levels at the theme parks right now are DRASTICALLY lower than what they are typically. Most attractions are walk-ons, and there is more elbow room in the parks than we’ve seen in YEARS. There are definitely some things we like BETTER now than we did before the closures. Where’d Everybody Go? If you think it may be worth it to hang onto your Annual Pass, keep in mind that you’ll also get that renewal discount when it comes time to re-up your Pass. The savings here aren’t significant, but it’s certainly something to consider if you foresee wanting to have that pass in 2021 and beyond. Is Disney World safe to visit right now? Read our thoughts here! So, what do WE think you should do with your Annual Pass? Ultimately we cannot tell YOU what decision to make with your Annual Pass, but being an Annual Passholder at Disney World is a whole different ball game than what it was before the closures. While there are some hidden benefits to visiting the parks now (low crowds being the big one), just getting TO the parks and enjoying your time there can be a burdensome experience. Disney World The factors that you considered when you originally signed up for your pass may not be the same factors you have now when deciding whether or not to keep your pass. Every family and travel party is different from the next, so we hope you take all this information into consideration if you have yet to make your decision! Looking to visit Disney World in 2020? 17. Over a month ago, we told you about a court ruling that could save Disney and potentially other Florida resort operators millions in real property taxes. Beach Club Resort Now, the court has withdrawn its previous order and issued a new, revised opinion. We’ve got all the details on what this new ruling may mean for Disney and others! In 2015, Rick Singh, as the property appraiser of Orange County increased the tax assessment of Disney’s Yacht Club Resort and Disney’s Beach Club Resort by 118%! This resulted in a tremendous increase in property taxes due on these resorts. Disney’s Yacht Club Resort Disney challenged that assessment and on some of its other properties as well. Previously, the appeals court entered an order finding that the assessment process Singh used to appraise Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club Resorts was illegal under Florida law. Now, the Court issued a new opinion and softened its position. Yacht Club Resort Instead of declaring that the appraisal method itself is “illegal,” the Court has noted that the manner in which Singh applied the appraisal method included certain values as part of the assessment that should not have been included. Yacht and Beach Clubs’ Stormalong Bay Cabana Construction The appeals court also found that the record didn’t contain competent substantial evidence from which the lower court could make an assessment of the property. Therefore, the matter must actually be sent back to the Orange County Property Appraiser so they can conduct a reassessment of the property consistent with the Court’s latest opinion. Disney’s Beach Club Resort What does this mean for the future? It means Disney and other hotel operators don’t have as easy a path toward tax savings as they thought. And, instead of getting a firm ruling from the Court that resolves all of their disputes about the valuation of these hotels, the Property Appraiser will need to reassess the property — which, of course, must be in compliance with the Court’s current rulings. Disney’s Beach Club Resort According to the Orlando Sentinel, Singh is pleased with the new order as it gives his office the chance to return to their work in determining an accurate assessment of the value of the resorts. One attorney noted that the new ruling is not as powerful as the initial one, but still sends a signal to those using the same method Singh used for his appraisal of these resorts that the method will be highly scrutinized. So, it wasn’t exactly the slam dunk Disney got before. It will be interesting to see how this order affects the other cases Disney has pending on various other properties’ assessed values. We’ll keep an eye out what happens with Singh’s reassessment of the property and see what action Disney takes from there! Click here to check out the ultimate Disney World reopening video playlist! 19. Disney Springs Resort Area Hotels can give you on-property benefits with great savings. © Wyndham Lake Buena Vista Disney Springs Resort Area Many of the Disney Springs Resort Area Hotels also contained small in-resort stores that sold a variety of Disney merchandise items as well as Disney park tickets. Now, we’ve got some updates about whether you’ll be able to visit these Disney stores during your next stay in one of these hotels. Recently, we were able to speak with a representative from the B Resort and Spa who said that their in-resort Disney store is permanently closed and, in fact, has been closed since January of this year. ©B Resort and Spa The representative indicated that she believed the store was closed because the hotel is so close to Disney Springs. It seems guests would rather do their shopping at the many stores in the Springs rather than the smaller store within the resort. We were also able to speak with someone over at the Holiday Inn Orlando Disney Springs. The individual who we spoke to there said their in-resort Disney store is also closed, although he was unsure of how “permanent” the closure is. ©Holiday Inn But he did mention that Disney has already been removing a lot of items from the store, including the shelving. While we can’t say for certain, the removal of store shelving seems to indicate a fairly permanent closure to us. The representative from the Holiday Inn Orlando also noted that he knew Disney had been closing a lot of Disney Store locations outside of the resort. We’ll keep checking on the status of these, but it seems like select Disney stores within the Disney Springs Resort Area Hotels may be a thing of the past. At least we’ve got LOTS of options at Disney Springs to keep us (and our wallets) very busy! 21. Something very strange is happening at EPCOT right now! Italian Margarita Some of our favorite items that weren’t on the menu when Taste of EPCOT International Food and Wine Festival first began on July 15th have strangely returned! For instance, back by popular demand, you can now get the Italian Margarita at Italy’s booth and now another fan-favorite item has just popped up in Japan! Move over Frothy Ramen — The Teriyaki Chicken Bun has returned to the Japan food booth! We noticed Disney World’s website now shows the Teriyaki Chichen Bun on the festival’s official menu! Screenshot of Disney World’s Website Here’s what the Teriyaki Chicken Bun looks like IRL! It’s been a staple of Japan’s food booth for many festivals, so we know a lot of bao fans are going to be happy to hear this good news. Teriyaki Chicken Bun As you can see, inside the steamed bun, it’s filled with shredded chicken, minced veggies, and a rich teriyaki sauce! Each bao will set you back 6 bucks! Teriyaki Chicken Bun Once we’re back in EPCOT, we’ll confirm (without a doubt!) that the Teriyaki Chicken Bun returned and scoop one up for you, but since it’s now officially on Japan booth’s menu, we feel pretty confident that it’s there in case you get to the booth before we do! 22. Can you believe Disney Springs has been reopened now for a few months!? Since the shopping and dining district first welcomed guests back on May 20, additional locations have reopened along the way. Mac and Origins are BOTH open! As of today, two more shops have opened. Just when we thought our wallets were safe, both MAC and Origins opened their doors to shoppers! Our first stop was MAC Cosmetics! Currently, they are only allowing five guests in at a time, and the sampling of products, including makeup applications and testing, are currently unavailable. Welcome back to MAC! While it may be tricky to pick out makeup products without being able to sample them, their staff are on-hand to answer any questions you may have. MAC Cosmetics We certainly had a successful shopping trip to MAC! MAC Cosmetics After MAC, we hopped into Origins to see what new measurements they had in place. Origins Those floor markers we’ve all come to know and love are present, keeping shoppers six feet apart. Hand sanitizer was also readily available throughout the store. Origins Much like MAC, certain parts of the shopping experience needed to be altered to fit current health and safety regulations. That meant that their handwashing sink was currently unavailable to use. Origins So, stop by MAC and Origins the next time you’re in Disney Springs and pamper yourself! Whether you’re shopping for skincare, makeup, or both, Disney Springs has got you covered. We’re keeping up with another upcoming opening at Disney Springs that is sure to satisfy our sweet tooth! 24. Right now, you can grab a delicious croissant in the France pavilion in EPCOT at Les Halle Boulangerie-Patisserie. Les Halles Boulangerie Food Options But the two table service restaurants in the France pavilion, Chefs de France and Monsieur Paul, remain closed. We recently got some news about what the future may hold for these two spots. JBI LLC is the company that operates both Chefs de France and Monsieur Paul. Eric Weistroffer currently serves as the executive director of JBI LLC. Chefs de France Recently, Scott Joseph of Scott Joseph’s Orlando Restaurant Guide had the chance to speak with Bruno Vrignon, Executive Chef of EPCOT’s France Pavilion, about his retirement. Joseph also had the chance to speak with Weistroffer about the future of the restaurants in the France pavilion. Monsieur Paul Entrance Joseph inquired when the full-service restaurants would reopen, to which Weistroffer suggested: “that the real question was if they would reopen.” France Pavilion Due to the global situation, EPCOT and all of the Disney Parks closed for a significant period of time. Additionally, Walt Disney World’s cultural representative programs were all canceled indefinitely. After the closure, most of the individuals who worked at the France pavilion, including nearly all of the servers, returned home. The France Pavilion Even though EPCOT has reopened, Disney is currently only operating with a limited guest capacity. Weistroffer indicated that attendance numbers at EPCOT simply have not been enough to reopen all of the restaurants or to bring back its staff members that are currently furloughed. Disney is also in the progress of completing the new La Crêperie de Paris location that was set to open in the pavilion this summer. No opening date has been announced or the new location at this time. Of course, all of this all may change in the future, so we will keep an eye out for more news regarding the reopening of these restaurants. It will be interesting to see whether similar circumstances begin impacting other restaurants around EPCOT. We will let you know the latest as we find out more. 25. After 38 years of working for Walt Disney World, acclaimed executive chef Bruno Vrignon has decided to step away. Chef Bruno Vrignon, Photo Credit: Scott Joseph’s Orlando Restaurant Guide Vrignon has been at EPCOT’s France pavilion since the park’s 1982 opening and has contributed to the success of Chefs de France and Monsieur Paul, two of the property’s most-noteworthy restaurants. Scott Joseph’s Orlando Restaurant Guide was the first to report Vrignon’s decision to retire. Vrignon started his culinary career in France preparing meals for a noble family before obtaining dual citizenship and coming to the United States. He’s also been the chef de partie at Restaurant Paul Bocuse in Collonges-au-Mont-d’or, near Lyon, France. At this time, both Chefs de France and Monsieur Paul in EPCOT’s France pavilion have yet to reopen and the delivery date on France’s newest restaurant, Le Crêperie de Paris, has yet to be announced. Les Chefs de France Vrignon does not have any immediate plans for his future and but claimed he will most likely be staying in the Orlando area. For now, the only dining locations that have reopened at France are L’Artisan des Glaces and Les Halles Boulangerie Patisserie. Read our most recent review of Les Chefs de France here!
