Bright suns! Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge If you’re headed to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in Disney’s Hollywood Studios today, you should know the area recently experienced some intense weather which may affect your ability to ride one of its star attractions. Despite Batuu being its own separate planet, it seems the weather from Orlando, Florida on Monday evening rolled into the land and created quite the light show. According to Fox 35 Orlando, Austin Coppock, a guest at Hollywood Studios, recorded a video showing a giant lightning bolt striking an area that appears to be in Galaxy’s Edge. Wow! Darth Sidious has got nothing on this lighting bolt. As Fox 35 News pointed out, it looks like the lightning bolt struck a lightning rod on one of the mountains that forms Galaxy’s Edge’s beautiful mountain range. Aaron Coppock reportedly confirmed to Fox 35 Orlando that is what appeared to have occurred. Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge We’ve noticed that Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance has been temporarily unavailable throughout the day today. We checked around 2:40PM ET and it still appeared as “Temporarily Closed” in My Disney Experience. Screenshot from My Disney Experience, ©Disney We can’t confirm if the lightning bolt is the cause of the temporary closure, or if the ride is simply experiencing separate technical issues, but we do find it interesting that the attraction has been temporarily unavailable all day following that intense weather moment. We’ll keep you posted as we learn more! Can’t make it out to Galaxy’s Edge? Check out these Galaxy’s Edge inspired toys that are coming to Target! Have you ever been to Galaxy’s Edge? Annual Passholders have had to deal with a pretty interesting year. To help give Passholders more options during this difficult time, Disney presented the option of canceling Annual Passes in exchange for a partial refund. Walt Disney World Annual Passholder TODAY is the final day for Passholders to decide to cancel their Passes. If they do, Passes will no longer be valid for entry beginning tomorrow. We’ve talked you through the decision to cancel, but today there’s a new issue. Annual Passholder V.I.PASSHOLDER Support phone lines are BUSY and it’s the LAST DAY. Don’t freak out! Here’s what to do if you can’t get through on the phone to cancel your pass. One of the ways that you can cancel your Annual Pass is by calling V.I.PASSHOLDER Support at (407) 939-7277. Right now, though, the phone lines are slammed and we’ve heard a message letting us know that all circuits are busy. If you need to cancel your pass and you run into this issue, don’t panic. You have options. Magic Kingdom For one, you can always keep redialing. In the past, we’ve redialed hundreds of times before we finally get through to the line, but we HAVE gotten through. Still, there’s a MUCH easier path you can take too. When we noticed the lines were busy, we reached out to a Cast Member via the Chat feature on the Disney World website. We waited just 15 minutes before being connected. Chat Screenshot If you did receive an email link for canceling your Pass, you can use it. If not, let the Cast Member in chat know. We were directed to a secure Guest Information Form that popped up alongside the chat window. Once we filled it out with our basic contact info and email address used for My Disney Experience, the Cast Member could submit our request to cancel our Pass. It was that easy! No lengthy hold time on the phone and no panicking because the call won’t go through. Chat Screenshot Keep in mind, the Cast Member informed us once we submitted that form, there are no take-backsies. It’s done and if guests chose to chancel this way, they should see the refund processed in mid to late September on the original form of payment used. If that form of payment is unavailable, it may take slightly longer to refund your money. We received an email confirming this as well following our chat. So, if you’re stuck unable to get through on the phone lines, head to the Disney World website. You’ll find the Chat feature linked on the Home Page and on the “Contact Us” Page. If you have any more questions about reaching out to Disney, ask them in the comments! For more information on how to contact Disney when you can’t get through on the phone, click here. Now that we’re back in Disney World, you know that means we’re basically required to eat our way through the parks (for research, of course)! Animal Kingdom And over at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, after we practically WALKED on Flight of Passage and Expedition Everest with the low wait times we’ve seen, we headed back to Tiffins for a lunch date! Since Disney World has been operating with new health and safety measures in its restaurants after the parks have opened again, we decided to head back to Animal Kingdom to see what had changed at its table-service spots. Tiffins was calling our name with its gorgeous atmosphere and historically high-end food. Check-In Process As a part of the check-in process at Tiffins, guests can sanitize their hands before waiting for their reservation to be called for the restaurant. Tiffins Check In Just like the procedure we’ve seen at other Disney World restaurants, Tiffins is using the Mobile Dining Check-in so there isn’t a crowd of people waiting to be seated inside the restaurant. After you scan the QR code on the sign out front… Tiffins Mobile Dine Check In …a page will pop up to redirect you to your My Disney Experience app. After going through the check-in questionnaire for your party concerning any special requests, allergies, and other options, you’ll receive a text confirming that the restaurant will let you know when your table is ready. Mobile Dining Check-In Guests are distanced from one another outside of the restaurant while they wait (even though it’s not usually for very long)… Tiffins Check-In …before they receive the return text directing them to the host stand. Mobile Dining Check-In We met with our hostess who seated us right away inside. Check out the full guide to the Mobile Check-In dining process in Disney World here! Atmosphere The atmosphere inside Tiffins is truly unique. The name of the restaurant itself is an Indian term for a mid-day meal or a lunchbox used by travelers (check the sign outside the entrance — you’ll see actual tiffins displayed there!). Tiffins Sign Tiffins has three galleries in its dining room based on Asia (the Trek Gallery), Africa (the Safari Gallery), and the animal species found in the park (the Grand Gallery). Safari Gallery Dining Room The decorations in the restaurant reflect world travel, combining maps, artwork, prayer flags, and more as an homage to the global influences that can be found all over Animal Kingdom. Much of the art and designs directly influenced Imagineers when designing the park and were placed around the restaurant for guests to learn more about their creative process. Trek Gallery — Tibetan Prayer Flags Be sure to take a moment to admire the inspiration behind so much of this park. Cards explaining the significance of the pieces can be found near most of the artwork. Safari Gallery — Electrified Artwork The adjoining Nomad Lounge is available for guests to grab a drink or two without a reservation. Nomad Lounge The restaurant has noticeably added multiple health and safety precautions around the dining areas with hand-sanitizer dispensers, health notice signs, and plexiglass barriers at the bars (note that you can’t sit at the bar any longer)… Nomad Lounge …as well as tables designated as unavailable to promote distancing efforts. Safari Gallery Dining Room Eats Buuut, enough about how unique this place looks — you’re here for the meal (just like we are)! QR code menus are available inside of Tiffins to take a look at all the menu items available during your visit. Simply open the camera on your phone and point it at the code for it to direct to the menu page. (Remember when you had to download special apps? Not anymore!) Tiffins QR Code Menu There is a variety of Beer and Cocktails (you can find these drinks in the Nomad Lounge as well!)… Cocktails …Appetizers… Appetizers …Entrees and Enhancements (fancy optional sides) for an additional fee… Entrees and Accompaniments …and Desserts. Desserts After we were seated, complimentary Pomegranate Focaccia Bread was brought to our table. Pomegranate Focaccia Bread This bread is very moist and we happen to love it, especially when paired with the pomegranate molasses dipping oil it’s served with. This is a bit of a polarizing dip due to its unique flavor — it’s a complex mix of tangy, sweet, and kind of bitter all at the same time. We recommend giving it a good stir right before you spoon it on your bread (the pomegranate reduction settles below the olive oil in the cup)! Pomegranate Focaccia Bread Before our meal arrived, we ordered the Tempting Tigress cocktail to kick things off! The cocktail is mixed up with Russell’s Reserve 10 yr Bourbon, St. Elizabeth Allspice Dram, Tamarind Syrup, and Lime Juice for $15. Tempting Tigress Fans of Old-Fashioned cocktails will LOVE this sip since the flavors have some pretty heavy Bourbon flavors. However, the Tamarind Syrup and Lime Juice add a kick of citrus to it that makes the drink perfectly refreshing during a hot day in Disney World! Tempting Tigress We decided to go with something a little more interesting as an appetizer with the Spiced Chickpea Falafel served with mint-pistachio pesto, cumin-scented garlic raita, and pickled vegetables for $10. Spiced Chickpea Falafel Honestly, we could have gone to Tiffins JUST to get the Spiced Chickpea Falafel. The crispy outside of the falafel had plenty of crunch before biting into the soft filling. The falafels on their own had an amazing amount of flavor, but the mint-pistachio pesto added a nice balance to the appetizer that was super satisfying when the two were combined. Even those averse to the idea of a vegetarian appetizer or falafel in general will likely still enjoy this. The combo of flavors and textures is THAT good. Spiced Chickpea Falafel For the main course, we went for the classic Butter Chicken dish served with chickpea-rice croquette, English peas, cauliflower, and pickled onion for $38. Butter Chicken This isn’t the typical preparation of Butter Chicken you’ll find elsewhere at Disney World (like our favorite one over at Sanaa) or beyond where chicken is stewed in the spiced creamy, tomatoey sauce. Here, the breast meat is served whole with the sauce poured on top. The chicken was lovely and perfectly cooked with a nice hint of seasoning that paired well with all that buttery and delicious sauce! Butter Chicken While the chickpea-rice croquette didn’t have too much flavor, it was a nice counterpart to the other textures in the dish. Butter Chicken Some people might not be cauliflower fans, but it was a nice pop of color next to the chicken (and it’s worth trying when you’re at Tiffins)! Butter Chicken Overall this chicken is good, but Sanaa’s rich and hearty Butter Chicken will still come in at number one for us. Plus — and here’s the main rub with Tiffins for many of us here at DFB — that dish cost $38. $38!!!! For maybe 6 oz of chicken and some veg??? Tiffins has lovely food, and it’s definitely not a “theme park” menu. But the prices for the portion sizes are often unbalanced in our opinion. Something to note when you’re deciding which signature restaurant to spend your money with. At the end of the meal, we were given a disposable paper folio for our check like we have used at our other table-service meals around the parks, instead of the traditional reusable folios. Check As we’ve experienced here in the past, our check came with a souvenir card of Imagineer Joe Rohde’s artwork to take home with us. This is a unique touch you’ll find at Tiffins. Rohde heavily influenced the design of the restaurant (and much of Animal Kingdom) so his sketches are a fitting memento to end your meal here. Joe Rohde Artwork They change out the print you’ll receive periodically, so you may receive something completely different! We’ve seen a few different animal sketches in past years. Nosh or Not Consider dining at Tiffins if: You want to experience a unique, quiet, art gallery-like atmosphere at a table-service restaurant in a theme park (it’s a good escape) You enjoy trying food that isn’t necessarily typical of what you’d get at other restaurants around the parks. The menu at Tiffins combines flavors and dishes from multiple regions around the world, so there is a variety of unique options for guests. You love a quieter restaurant that gives you a more intimate place to talk to your family and friends during your time in Animal Kingdom. Tiffins Meal You may want to skip Tiffins if: You’re traveling with a younger group who might want to have more kid-friendly options, like burgers, pizza, and sandwiches. You are dining in Disney World on a budget. While Tiffins has some unique eats and drinks, the prices can be a bit expensive ($38 for chicken??). Instead of going to this sit-down restaurant, Pandora has quick-service restaurants that have cheaper meals that are just as special. And remember you can still grab the same drinks over in the Nomad Lounge as well as a few smaller bites for less money. You’d rather spend your $$$ at a different signature restaurant elsewhere on property that offers more value for your respective dollar. Overall Tiffins is a unique dining experience in Animal Kingdom. It’s as much a feast for the eyes as it is your stomach. We were surprised by how much we loved the cocktail and the appetizer here. If we were wanting a smaller meal before tackling the rest of Animal Kingdom, the falafel was very filling and pairs quite well with the Tempting Tigress. Tasty Treats! However, the Butter Chicken was tasty, but not anything spectacular (and definitely not worth the price tag). They are operating with a limited menu at this time so we didn’t have as many entree choices as we’ve seen in past visits. But if you’re looking for an enjoyable chicken dish, there are much better options you can find elsewhere on property. We especially recommend heading over to Chef Art Smith’s Homecomin’ over in Disney Springs since both the baked and fried chicken options are incredible. And, again, if you’re craving Butter Chicken, swing by the nearby Animal Kingdom Lodge for a visit to Sanaa. If you’ve never been to Tiffins, though, we think you should definitely take the time to visit once (even if it’s just to the Nomad Lounge for a drink)! All that said, we have many readers who are Tiffins devotees!! They love it, think it’s worth the money, and go again and again. So we admit our opinion on this one is potentially in the minority, and every time we go we hope to have a different outcome. But it’s always the same for us. It’s hard to believe but the Disney World theme parks have been reopened for ONE MONTH already! Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom welcomed guests back on July 7 for their Cast Member previews, and since then the four parks have begun their phased reopenings. Main Street, U.S.A. With the promise of limited capacity, we have witnessed drastically lower crowds than what we would typically see during the summer season. But how have these crowd levels changed over the last month? This is a question we’re getting more and more often from our readers and social media followers, so let’s find out! Wait Times Are Getting A Bit Longer We knew the crowds would be lower when the theme parks reopened, but we perhaps weren’t as prepared for seeing such short wait times! Magic Kingdom posted seemingly record-breaking wait times for all of its attractions, even the popular ones like Peter Pan’s Flight (we see you, 10-minute wait!). Magic Kingdom Wait Times as of 6:30PM on July 11th Even with the temporary suspension of FastPass+, most of the attraction standby lines have been able to move at a consistent rate. So even the more popular rides with wait times of 30 or 40 minutes had lines that were moving right along. Splash Mountain Attraction Line Since the parks reopened a month ago, we have noticed a slight uptick in wait times. Across all four theme parks, wait times have seemed to stabilize at lengths that are slightly higher than the 5-10 minutes we saw on week one, but still significantly lower than what summer crowds typically yield. We’ll get into more specifics about crowds in each park shortly. Read more about what the wait times were like on Magic Kingdom’s grand reopening day here! Park Pass Reservation Availability is Becoming More Difficult to Plan For Arguably the biggest change to come about in Disney World’s phased reopening is the Park Pass Reservation System. Now, guests must have valid park admission as well as a valid Park Pass Reservation in order to enter the parks. Disney Park Pass Screenshot When the system first rolled out, reservations were in general widely available, with some early dates filling up for Annual Passholders right around the reopening dates. Since the theme parks reopened, however, Park Pass Reservations are becoming increasingly more difficult to get, at least for last-minute trips and especially for Annual Passholders. Annual Passholder Availability as of July 22nd Reservations have consistently filled up first for Annual Passholders, who, at the local level, we learned account for roughly 50% of current attendance numbers. Resort Guests and other standard Ticket Holders have been able to book reservations with more ease. Learn more about Disney World’s Park Pass Reservation System here! Hollywood Studios Continues to Be More Crowded Since its reopening day, Disney’s Hollywood Studios continues to be the park that at least FEELS the most crowded. There are fewer rides open in this park than in the others, and wait times are typically much longer for the more popular attractions. We even spotted Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway at one point turning guests away from queueing up in line when capacity for the line was reached! Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway Hollywood Studios has also consistently been the first park to show fully booked up Park Pass Reservations. Disney Park Pass Availability Screenshot from June 24 Boarding Groups for Rise of the Resistance are still notoriously difficult to obtain. In fact, it can be just as difficult to get a Boarding Group as it was before the closures began, even with the lowered capacity! While Virtual Queues and FastPass lines are on hold across the parks, for now, Rise of the Resistance is the only ride still requiring a spot in the virtual queue each day to gain admission. So even with lower crowds overall, this park still feels the most crowded — and sometimes dangerously so. Why does Hollywood Studios feel more crowded than the other parks? Learn more here! …Other Parks, Not So Much Despite what we have been experiencing at Hollywood Studios, the other three parks have much more elbow room, especially at EPCOT and Animal Kingdom. EPCOT Those two parks have seemed to be the best options for being able to easily maintain social distancing from other guests. EPCOT’s lower crowd levels are also reflected in that it was the last park to fill up for Annual Passholders for the month of August. Annual Passholder Availability for August. EPCOT is the only park available at this time. © Disney We cannot say at this time if these trends will continue, but it has so far been fairly consistent on a weekly basis: Hollywood Studios is crowded, while the other three parks are much more manageable. Take a look at EPCOT’s grand reopening day crowds here! But Disney Springs Is A Whole Other Ballgame That said, we do want to mention Disney Springs here as well, which is a whole other ballgame. While Disney Springs had very low crowds during its opening week in May, we’ve seen crowds steadily rise at the shopping and dining district over the past few months. And this past weekend we had reports from readers that the parking garage was full, and guests were being directed to park at a nearby hotel. Disney Springs We weren’t able to confirm this ourselves, but we can definitively report that Disney Springs crowds have ticked up significantly in recent weeks — to the point that it can be difficult to socially distance while there on nights and weekends. We’re also seeing a lot less mask compliance in Disney Springs than we are in the theme parks, and we want you to be aware of that as well. With the parks closing early and resorts closed off to many guests, it makes sense that the anyone-can-visit-anytime Disney Springs becomes the de facto dinner location for many guests. If you’re headed to Disney Springs and want to be as safe as possible, plan to go on a weekday versus in the evening or on weekends. Overall Despite the modest increase in crowds and wait times we’ve seen over the last month, it’s still vastly less crowded than what summer typically looks like in Disney World. This could be one of the reasons for the shortening of park hours, set to begin next month. If you have an upcoming trip to Disney World, you can definitely expect to see on average lower crowds than what you’ve seen in the past. But, keep in mind there is also less going on. With no fireworks, parades, or character meet and greets for the time being, you’re left with just attractions, dining, and shopping to fill your time (which is still quite a bit of stuff to do!). That alone can fill up a day in the parks, especially an abbreviated day. While we cannot guarantee you’ll experience a literal “ghost town,” you should have no problem accomplishing your top priorities in each of the theme parks (but be sure to snag that Hollywood Studios Park Pass early!). Read more about Disney World shortening their theme park hours here! Do you have upcoming travel plans to visit Disney World? Let us know in the comments!
