Greeting, friends! We’re on our way to Magic Kingdom for the day! Monorail We hopped on the monorail at the Ticket and Transportation Center this morning and had a chance to see how TRON Lightcycle Run construction was progressing as we zoomed by it in the sky! TRON Lightcycle Run is an upcoming attraction that will be similar to Shanghai Disneyland’s TRON Lightcycle Power Run. Disney World originally planned on delivering the major attraction in 2021 to celebrate Magic Kingdom’s 50th anniversary. TRON Construction Disney hasn’t announced whether or not its final competition date has been impacted, but officials have stated TRON Lightcycle Run will be one of the construction projects they’ll be picking back up in stages. TRON Construction Construction workers were present at the site today and were working on a structure towards the back of the attraction. TRON Construction The project still looks a long ways away from completion, but TRON construction appears to be moving forward nonetheless! We’ll keep you updated with the progress of TRON Lightcycle Run, but for now, check out the construction workers we spotted at EPCOT’s Space 220 Restuarant recently here! The Walt Disney Company has had quite the fiscal year so far. Magic Kingdom You might remember the Q2 Earnings Call back in May that showed just the beginning of what the global health crisis would mean for Disney. And today, the Q3 Earnings Call brought us more outcomes from the unprecedented park closures, entertainment shut-downs, and cruise catastrophes brought by the last four months. Some of Disney’s segments — most prominently the Parks, Experiences, and Products segment — saw income numbers plummet. But despite billions in losses, Disney’s stock skyrocketed after hours last night. But why? As you can imagine, the pandemic had a hugely negative effect on several Disney segments and the company as a whole. According to Disney Chief Financial Officer Christine McCarthy, the company is estimating that the impact was approximately a hit of $3 billion dollars to operating income. Magic Kingdom Compared to 2019, the company saw a 72% decrease in operating income from approximately $4 billion for the quarter down to approximately $1 billion. This has also had a significant effect on earnings per share which are just $0.08 compared to 2019’s $1.34. Of course, the biggest hit was to the theme parks. Disney’s Parks, Experiences, and Products segment saw an operating loss of almost $2 billion compared to an operating income of $2 billion in 2019. Beyond that, McCarthy explains that the costs of restarting segments through the end of fiscal 2021 could total approximately $1 billion. Tree of Life But despite these numbers, Disney’s stock prices soared in the hours after the Earnings call. At market close (prior to the report and call), prices were sitting at 117.29. Now, they’re up another 5.02, sitting at 122.31 at the time of writing. So what made this call a POSITIVE one for stockholders? Let’s take a look. Disney Stock cost graph 8-4-20 Disney+ is winning worldwide. First of all, Disney+ has been a major win for the company. Disney CEO Bob Chapek notes, “Despite the ongoing challenges of the pandemic, we’ve continued to build on the incredible success of Disney+ as we grow our global direct-to-consumer businesses.” © Disney And the success of Disney+ HAS been incredible. As of the end of the quarter, Disney+ had 57.5 million paid subscribers. Now, the service has surpassed 60.5 million paid subscribers globally. Disney+ is exceeding projections in every major market, and by the end of the year, the service will expand even further. The World According to Jeff Goldblum ©Disney Chapek explained that he not only believes they will be able to sustain the levels of growth they’re seeing but that they will go beyond them. He explained that the company isn’t planning to rest on their already-produced laurels. The company has found that new content brings in new subscribers, increases engagement, and retains subscribers. With anticipated content on the horizon — Marvel shows, The Mandalorian, and now the premiere access release of Mulan — Chapek expects new content to propel viewership and growth. Click here to learn about how YOU can watch Mulan on Disney+! Walt Disney World is still operating at a “net positive contribution level.” Another pro noted on the call for investors is that Walt Disney World is operating at a “net positive contribution level” since it has reopened. McCarthy explained that they had projected a higher upside, but health concerns in Florida have caused revenues to exceed variable costs to a lesser extent than expected (that means they’re not making as much from the parks as they thought they would). Still, Disney is reporting that “net positive contribution,” even at current attendance levels. EPCOT Chapek explained that they are welcoming numbers of guests that are pretty close to the percentage of the park they can fill each day with social distancing guidelines. Attendance is currently around 50% locals and 50% travelers, so the company has made adjustments to account for the fact that fewer people are traveling than expected by increasing park availability for locals — many of whom are Annual Passholders. Magic Kingdom Chapek and McCarthy agree that the parks will be in good shape once health concerns level out in Florida and as regular travel patterns to Orlando pick up again. The net positive contribution level and shiny outlook on the coming months may read as a boon for some shareholders. Want to see who is going to Disney World right now? Click here! The company has “excessive” $23 billion in cash set aside, partially as insurance. Beyond that, the company is extremely liquid with around $23 billion sitting on its balance sheet as cash. That amount accounts for a lot, so much so that one analyst on the call even called it “excessive.” McCarthy explained, “We remain laser-focused on prudently managing our cash outflows and preserving liquidity.” Magic Kingdom Essentially, the Disney company is taking a very conservative approach to managing liquidity — so that the money (in this case $23 billion) is there if they need it. McCarthy explained that they were able to raise that money in March and April with favorable interest rates, when there was little visibility into how long the fiscal aspects of the global health crisis would continue. Grand Floridian Resort Ultimately, the money is there “just in case.” McCarthy called it something like an insurance policy in case we see the effects of the global health crisis continue for a while. The stance is that a lack of liquidity can destroy a company, so Disney has taken an aggressive approach in ensuring liquidity. And many investors may see this as a solid foundation in an uncertain time. Significant cost-cutting in the quarter was a benefit to the bottom line. The executives on the call were also able to tout success with significant cost-cutting in the quarter. Overall, Disney is spending $700 million less than in 2019 on capital spending projects, including lower spending at domestic parks and resorts. Disney’s BoardWalk Inn McCarthy explained that the company did a great job with cost mitigation on opening the parks. Part of this was the furlough of over 100,000 people. As you can imagine, they will be spending more on labor in the fourth quarter as many of these Cast Members return to work. Still, Disney’s effective and swift action at the beginning of the crisis, and the resulting numbers, presents as a good sign for investors. Disney will continue to take an aggressive approach with the direct-to-consumer segment after seeing great success so far. And finally, Chapek assured during the call that the prioritization of the Direct-to-Consumer Segment would continue, especially following the amazing success of Disney+ and other platforms. In fact, the global reach of all subscriber services owned by Disney has resulted in over 100 million paid subscriptions. ©Disney In Chapek’s words, “We’ve been very focused on advancing and growing our direct-to-consumer business which we see as our top priority and key to the future of our company.” It seems this aggressive approach will continue as well. Not only is Disney looking to continue growth with Disney+, but they are introducing a new Star-branded general entertainment offering into the market in 2021. Promises of growth are certainly attractive provided Disney can deliver. ©Disney/Marvel Overall, the call held a tone of optimism in reference to the coming quarters and years for the Walt Disney Company. In fact, despite billions of dollars of losses, there was very little negative noted on the call. Chapek said, “Personally, I am as optimistic as I could be about our way forward,” and the rise in stock prices show that some investors feel the same. Disneyland opened on July 17th, 1955, so this year marks the 65th anniversary of Walt Disney’s original theme park. Sleeping Beauty Castle in Disneyland While Disneyland itself remains closed, some of Downtown Disney’s restaurants and stores have reopened and new Disneyland 65th Anniversary merch has been released at World of Disney and online. Recently, we told you about an auction house that would be presenting, “Disneyland: The First 65 Years,” a sale of over 1,000 artifacts from Disney’s history! Van Eaton Galleries in Sherman Oaks, California, will be hosting the live auction on August 15th and August 16th and there are many, MANY unusual Disneyland items to bid on! ©Van Eaton Friend of the blog, Heather Sievers, went down to Van Eaton’s showroom where many of the items up for auction are being displayed. She had her camera handy and took LOTS of great photos for us so we could all pretend like we were THERE with her! Umm, how much do you think that Splash Mountain sign in the background of this pic is going to go for?! With the ride slated to become a new Princess and the Frog-themed attraction, this little piece of memorabilia will be quite the collector’s item someday! Disneyland Auction Heather also got up close and personal with the mailbox we saw advertised in the auction’s catalog! How cool would it be to use this item as your actual mailbox at your house? Disneyland Mailbox For Haunted Mansion peeps, she spotted several spooky pieces of memorabilia including the Club 33 exclusive 50th-anniversary Haunted Mansion tiki glasses, swizzle sticks, and coasters that came out last year. If you’re looking for some yummy Japanese eats during your trip to EPCOT, you’ve only got a few places to choose from right now. Japan Pavilion at EPCOT The 2020 Taste of EPCOT International Food and Wine Festival is currently underway which means you can swing by the Japan food booth for some Frothy Ramen or Tempura Donburi! You can also trek up the hill to dine at Katsura Grill, which is now serving a few new menu items including a Menchi Katsu Slider and Yuzu Miso Wings. For now, the rest of the Japan pavilion’s restaurants are still closed, but earlier today we noticed Teppan Edo was tinkering with their lunch and dinner menu! Teppan Edo Before the Closures If you’re not familiar with Teppan Edo, it’s a table service hibachi grill restaurant (think Disney’s version of Benihana) that sits above the Mitsukoshi Department Store. Chefs use a heated cook plate that’s built into the table to prepare fresh meals right before your eyes! There’s usually some theatrical maneuvers involving spatula twirling, dancing shrimp, and steaming volcanos made out piles of onions. Teppan Edo Needless to say, Teppan Edo would have to make some health and safety modifications before reopening, so we’ll be very curious to see how the dining experience will change. In the meantime, here are the changes they’ve recently made to their menu! Items Removed From Teppan Edo’s Menu: Wafu Ribs Shrimp Tempura Roll Sunomono Salad Golden Grape Calpico Banana Fizz Toji Kan Futsu-Shu (Sake) Items Added to Teppan Edo’s Menu: 6 oz. Filet Mignon, served with sunomono salad, udon noodles, vegetables, and steamed white rice for $38 Tsukiji Scallop and Steak Combo for $39 Tokyo Dining and Teppan Edo Waiting Area from Another Angle Teppan Edo shares a waiting area with Tokyo Dining which is also still closed at this time. We noticed Via Napoli Ristorante e Pizzeria and Tutto Italia Ristorante tweaked their menus shortly before they announced their reopening over in the World Showcase’s Italy pavilion. Could this mean Teppan Edo is making preparations to reopen soon? We don’t know for sure yet, but we will be sure to tell you when we do. Since Disney+ launched last November, the live streaming platform has already surpassed 60.5 million subscribers globally. ©Disney By the end of the year, Disney+ will be available in 9 of the most major economies of the world. Meanwhile, the company already accumulated over 100 million paid subscribers across all of its streaming offerings which also includes Hulu and ESPN. In an earnings call that just took place earlier today to discuss the third fiscal quarter for the Walt Disney Company, CEO Bob Chapek announced Disney’s plans to launch a new general entertainment streaming service, which will likely be an international service, in 2021 under the Star brand it acquired from Fox. Chapek didn’t give us very many details about the new service including pricing, release dates, or which countries would have it. Disney also didn’t share if this new service would be marketed in the US. Instead, he stated, “Mirroring the strategy we successfully pursued with Disney+, the offering will be rooted in content we own from the prolific and critically acclaimed production engines and libraries of ABC Studios, Fox Television, FX, Freeform, 20th Century studios, and Searchlight.” Bob Chapek Rather than expanding its Hulu platform internationally (Hulu doesn’t have much brand awareness outside of the U.S.), Disney has decided to launch the new streaming service globally under the bigger and more recognizable overseas Star brand. Chapek also explained Star will not aggregate 3rd party licensed content like Hulu does and added, “In many markets, the offering will be fully integrated into our established Disney+ platform from both a marketing and a technology perspective and it will be distributed under the Star brand which has been successfully utilized by the company for other general entertainment platform launches, particularly with Disney+ Hotstar in India.” ©Disney Disney+ Hotstar, launched in India on April 3rd, 2020 as a conversion to the preexisting Hotstar streaming service owned by Novi Digital Entertainment, a subsidiary of Disney’s Star India. Two paid subscription plans are available for the platform including “VIP,” which focuses on domestic shows and sports-related content while “Premium” access features international films and television programs. “We’ve been very focused on advancing and growing our direct-to-consumer business which we see as our top priority and key to the future of our company,” Chapek also noted. By ramping Disney’s streaming capabilities with Star’s additional content, Disney hopes Star will be a stimulus for more folks to sign up for Disney+, increasing consumer engagement while helping the platform retain its paid subscribers. We will continue to keep you posted as we learn more about this new streaming service, stay tuned. Mulan will be streaming on Disney+ for an additional cost NEXT MONTH! Click here to learn more! When Walt Disney World reopened, we were introduced to a whole bunch of new policies and procedures. Magic Kingdom One of the biggest changes we’ve seen is the introduction of the Park Pass Reservation System. Thanks to today’s quarterly earnings call, where the Walt Disney Company discussed the results of its third fiscal quarter of 2020, we’ve got more news about how limited capacity is being handled for Disney World’s Passholders and locals. In order to enter one of the newly reopened theme parks at Walt Disney World, a Disney Park Pass reservation, in addition to valid park admission, is required. On several occasions, we’ve seen park passes for specific parks fill up on certain days for Disney World Passholders, only to then see more availability open up later! EPCOT During the quarterly earnings call, Bob Chapek, Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company, noted approximately 50% of the guest base at Walt Disney World is currently made up of guests who are traveling to the resort from a distance, leaving locals to constitute the remaining 50% (approximately) of the guest base. Disney’s Animal Kingdom Chapek noted that there has also been a higher than expected level of cancellations as COVID-19 numbers ebb and flow, but that every day the parks are pretty close to the percentage that they can fill. Chapek also noted that Disney ultimately gave more reservations to locals, which explains why more park pass reservations were recently released for Passholders! We assume this is meant to counterbalance some of the cancellations that have been made by other guests. Tower of Terror Christine M. McCarthy, Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of The Walt Disney Company, also noted Disney expects demand to increase for Walt Disney World as COVID-19 numbers in Florida decrease. We’ll definitely keep watching the park pass reservation system to see how and if availability changes in the future! In the meantime, we’re off to buy all the Mulan merchandise in anticipation of the special release of Mulan on Disney+ in September!! During this third quarter for the Disney Company, Disney+ launched in India and France, and made a limited launch in Japan! We now know that the paid subscriber base for Disney+ as of the end of the third fiscal quarter of 2020 was 57.5 million! As of August 3, 2020, however, that number has increased to 60.5 million! ©Disney WOW! That’s a lot of friends who share a love for all things Disney, Star Wars, Marvel, and National Geographic! By the end of this year, Disney+ will actually be available in 9 of the most major economies of the world! We also learned that the new live-action Mulan will be released for an additional price on Disney+ in September! You can click here to learn all about how you’ll be able to see Mulan soon! ©Disney While the launch of Disney+ in Japan is only partial at the moment, it is expected that once Disney+ is launched fully in Japan, it will see more demand there. During the earnings call, we also learned that the focus of the Disney Company for Disney+ at the moment is to keep investing in new and exciting content! ©Disney According to Bob Chapek, the current Chief Executive Officer of the Walt Disney Company, the key to getting even more Disney+ subscribers is adding new content to the service. With the Walt Disney Company earning 145 Emmy nominations across all of their content, some of which came from Disney+, we’d say the future is looking bright for the future of Disney entertainment offerings!
