  5. Due to the ongoing global health crisis, The Walt Disney Company has had to pivot and adapt on the fly to the ever-changing circumstances of our new environment. Magic Kingdom Consisting of many segments pertaining to the entertainment industry including Disney Cruise Line and Walt Disney Studios namely, just about every facet of The Walt Disney Company has been financially impacted from the shutdown with Disney’s theme parks taking the biggest hit. Now, the Walt Disney Company has just held its Q3 earnings call to discuss the results of its third fiscal quarter of 2020. On the Q2 earnings call which took place on May 5th, Disney announced Shanghai Disneyland’s reopening date (the first of its six parks to reopen), while CEO Bob Chapek and CFO Christine McCarthy estimated Disney’s loss operating income was equal to almost $1 billion — mostly due to closures. Keep in mind the second quarter only constituted the first two weeks of the U.S. theme parks being closed. Disney World’s closure lasted for almost 17 weeks while Disneyland remains closed to this day. EPCOT In the third-quarter earnings report, Disney reported a 42% drop in revenues from the third quarter of 2019 from above $20 billion down to $11.7 billion. The operating income for all segments saw a 72% drop from almost $4 billion down to a little over $1 billion. Q3 Earnings Report In the Segment Results section of the document, Disney reported incomes for each segment and the change that was seen from last year. As it turns out, the closure of Disney’s theme parks resulted in an almost $2 billion loss to the bottom line from the Parks, Experiences, and Products segment. Segments Report Q3 The Parks, Experiences, and Products segment wasn’t the only one to see a significant drop from last year. Studio Entertainment saw operating income drop 16% from 2019 to 2020. Disney’s Animal Kingdom Disney did see significant growth compared to 2019’s third quarter in the Media Networks segment. Operating income grew from about $2 billion to about $3 billion, an increase of 48%. The company did see a loss in the Direct-to-Consumer & International sector, although this is associated with the ongoing (and highly successful) launch of Disney+ and is offset by successes in Media Networks. Disney’s Hollywood Studios There’s still a long road ahead of The Walt Disney Company. Even though many of its theme parks have reopened recently except for Disneyland Resort which is still an unknown. Meanwhile, Hong Kong Disneyland which had previously reopened on June 18th has already closed down once more due to an uptick in COVID-19 cases. We’ll be updating this post as we hear more information from the upcoming Quarter 3 Earnings Call in the next few minutes. Stay tuned. 9. Along with Disney’s theme parks, the Disney Cruise Line has been experiencing major delays due to the global health crisis. Disney Cruise Line Recently, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention extended the suspension of cruise departures from the United States through September 30th, 2020 which prompted Disney Cruise Line to push back their resumptive sailing dates for Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy yet again. During an earnings call last quarter, the CEO of Walt Disney Company, Bob Chapek, stated Disney Cruise Line could be one of the last operations to resume, and so far his predictions seem to be coming true. Today, however, there was some good news for the crew members sailing aboard two of the Disney fleet’s ships. Both the Disney Wonder and Disney Dream have been cleared by the CDC and given the status of “green” indicating both ships have had no confirmed cases of COVID-19 or COVID-like illness for 28 days. Screenshot From The CDC’s Website A green ship status does not imply sailings for Disney Cruise Line guests will resume anytime soon, but now that commercial travel is permissible for both vessels, both Disney Wonder and Disney Dream will be able to dock at ports in Mexico or the Caribbean so that crew members can get back to their homes. ©Disney As for Disney Fantasy and Disney Magic, both ships are currently in Europe and haven’t appeared on the CDC’s list of approved ships yet, but we’ll let you know as soon as they do! 12. Ah, Rise of the Resistance — we see you’re making news again! Rise of the Resistance We were reporting in Hollywood Studios today when we spotted something a little bit different about the way that Boarding Groups look in the My Disney Experience app. That’s right, we’re joining Rise of the Resistance’s Virtual Queue to check out a new update! To enter the Rise of the Resistance Virtual Queue, you have to be ready to take your chance at 10AM or 2PM. Today, we were able to snag Group 18 right at 10AM. But we noticed a change when we were called back to the attraction. There’s a new button that says “View Entry Code.” Rise of the Resistance Boarding Group When you tap that button, you’re taken to a screen with what looks like an e-ticket featuring a scannable code. This is pretty similar to the way that MaxPass works in Disneyland so it definitely caught our eye. Rise of the Resistance Boarding Group Still, when we got to the attraction, Cast Members just scanned our MagicBands and not our phones, so we’re not really sure what they’re using the barcode for just yet. We’ll be sure to keep an eye on this new feature so that we can get you all the latest updates! Click here to learn about Disney changing the Rise of the Resistance Virtual Queue times! 14. Although Walt Disney World has officially reopened, not all attractions and shows have reopened along with it. Fish are Friends NOT Food Recently we’ve seen some experiences reopen that were not initially available. Other offerings, however, like the classic live shows at Disney’s Animal Kingdom like Finding Nemo: The Musical and Festival of the Lion King still remain closed. Now, we’ve got some new somewhat balanced news about entertainment offerings at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. It seems one show is temporarily going away, but another performance will be temporarily appearing in its place! Theatre of the Stars, which is located on Sunset Boulevard in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, is typically home to Beauty and the Beast — Live on Stage. ©Disney Disney and the Actors’ Equity Association, however, have not yet been able to reach an agreement regarding the safety plans that must be implemented to bring Equity actors back to Disney World to perform. So, for the time being, a new entertainment offering has popped up at this theatre — The Disney Society Orchestra and Friends! The Disney Society Orchestra and Friends We like that there are lots of showtimes being offered so you can select whichever ones fit best into your schedule, or, if you’ve got big music fans in your group, you can see this show more than once during your trip! The Disney Society Orchestra and Friends The orchestra features a 6-piece band playing various instruments including woodwinds, electric bass, drums, and piano. Although Beauty and the Beast — Live on Stage is not currently being performed, we spotted the Enchanted Rose resting beautifully in its case toward the back of the stage! The Disney Society Orchestra and Friends We got to experience the show recently and heard some of our favorite songs from Disney movies and tv shows including “Monsters, Inc.” from Monsters, Inc., “Under the Sea” from The Little Mermaid, “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” from Toy Story, and even the Muppet Show Theme Song! We even got a special surprise at the end as they played “Be Our Guest” from Beauty and the Beast, as Lumiere, Cogsworth, Mrs. Potts, and Chip came out and did a little dance for us! Belle and the Beast also came out toward the back of the stage near the end and we got to sway with them as we all enjoyed the beautiful music! The Disney Society Orchestra and Friends We really loved this show and the chance to listen to some of our favorite songs being performed live! Disney has not shared much information about this new show, but we’ll keep you informed as we learn more. With the return of the modified Disney Junior Play and Dance Party, and now this new and potentially temporary show, we’re excited to see what new and unique ways Disney entertainment will continue to be offered in the future! 19. Just recently, we stopped by Tangierine Café in EPCOT’s beautiful Morocco pavilion to enjoy a sip of coffee paired with a slice of cake from the Juice Bar at Spice Road Table. Morocco Pavilion Tangierine Café was included on the original list of restaurants reopening along with the park itself on July 15th, and we’ve been making regular visits to the counter service restaurant ever since (and even spying new items in the bakery case). However, there has been a very recent change of operating status for the location. Though it has been open during our last several visits to the park, Tangierine Café is now listed as “Temporarily Unavailable” on the Walt Disney World website, with no future hours listed at press time. 20. It tends to be pretty difficult to snag must-have items from the Minnie Mouse: The Main Attraction series. ©Disney But the most recent collection has been extra difficult to buy! Typically, we have to contend with quick sales both in-store and online (plus some technical difficulties!). Now, with major merchandise releases happening online only and the introduction of the shopDisney MerchPass, you’d need to get PRETTY lucky to snag the already-delayed Peter Pan’s Flight line. Weirdly enough, we just GOT lucky as Disney released an UNANNOUNCED second round of MerchPass selections. What?! Take a look! We recently heard that the next line in the Minnie Mouse: The Main Attraction collection — inspired by Peter Pan’s Flight — would be releasing through shopDisney MerchPass. Those who were selected would receive an email by July 30th at 5PM. Of course, we entered (we GOTTA get those ears!), but when the end time rolled around, we weren’t selected. shopDisney Screenshot That is until we got an email TODAY! Hmm…it certainly doesn’t seem like it’s July 30th! That’s right, five days after the final deadline to be selected for the Peter Pan’s Flight MerchPass, we got the email that our items were reserved! MerchPass Screenshot As it turns out, enough folks who were selected in the first round DIDN’T claim the items that were reserved for them. So, Disney made the second round of MerchPass selections and we were included! We have until 5PM tomorrow to make our purchases, just like recipients did with the first release. MerchPass Screenshot When we headed to shopDisney, we noticed that the Minnie Mouse: The Main Attraction Ear Headband — Peter Pan’s Flight was already in our bag. Keep in mind, recipients of the MerchPass are limited to one of each item. MerchPass Screenshot So, if you signed up for the MerchPass and didn’t get lucky, keep an eye on your email! 24. When Disney World reopened, we couldn’t wait to get our hands on some of our favorite frozen snacks, especially the grand poobah of them all, Dole Whip! Dole Whip! Aloha Isle, which tends to serve a variety of Dole Whip options, is one of the dining locations that has reopened at Magic Kingdom. But prior to welcoming guests back, they cut several items from their menu! We saw Raspberry Dole Whip and the Kakamora Float (one of our favorite treats made from Coconut Dole Whip) get the boot! Aloha Isle wasn’t the only Magic Kingdom restaurant to simplify their menu prior to reopening. Sunshine Tree Terrace also scaled back on their soft-serve offerings. They removed their Orange Dole Whip along with the I Lava You Float and FOMOsa! I Lava You Float We also saw Storybook Treats has also stopped serving their Peter Pan Float made with Lime Dole Whip, but over the weekend it had magically REAPPEARED! Could this be the omen we’ve been searching for that other flavored Dole Whips could be returning to our sweet embrace soon? Photo Courtesy of: @mainstreetmom2 Well, we’re not going to get our hopes up just yet, but we did notice today Aloha Isle’s mobile order menu is now showing Raspberry Dole Whip as an option! We have Disney Park Pass reservations for Magic Kingdom tomorrow, so we’ll be sure to confirm this for you! Screenshot of Aloha Isle’s Mobile Order Menu Whether our beloved Kamamora Float will return or not remains to be seen, but having the Peter Pan Float and Raspberry Swirl back at Magic Kingdom certainly brings us joy! 25. EPCOT officially reopened a few weeks ago! Spaceship Earth While we’ve been suuuper busy eating our way around the world during the Taste of Epcot International Food & Wine Festival, we could never forget about all of the GREAT restaurants in World Showcase! During a recent trip to EPCOT, we decided to skip the Frothy Ramen (or, you know, just eat one later) and have dinner at Le Cellier, the signature dining spot in the Canada Pavilion. Le Cellier sign in the Canada Pavilion Let’s check out all the ways this restaurant has changed since the theme park’s grand reopening, and of course, let’s taste the steak! Atmosphere Le Cellier is just a liiiittle bit hidden. In order to get to this spot, you need to walk though some gardens in the Canada pavilion. Once inside, you’ll feel like you’re sitting in a wine cellar, with stone arches, relatively dim lighting, and wooden tables. Le Cellier interior It’s certifiably cozy and can be quite romantic! Le Cellier tables Of course, we visited Le Cellier after Disney World implemented new health and safety regulations for their reopening. A lot of the things we’ve seen at other indoor restaurants were here, too. There were hand sanitizer stations and plexiglass at the host stand… Le Cellier host stand with plexiglass …we had a QR code food menu and paper drink menus… Le Cellier QR menu …and tables were spaced out to encourage social distancing and limited capacity. Table spacing at Le Cellier It made an already quiet and intimate dining experience feel even MORE quiet and intimate. Eats We were glad to see so many of our favorite dishes, like the Canadian Cheddar Cheese Soup (*chef’s kiss*), remained on the menu! We started off our meal the best way we know how…with a cocktail, of course! We sipped on the Windsor Old Fashioned, which contains Canadian Whiskey with Muddled Fruit, Chocolate and Orange Bitters and a Splash of Soda for $15. Windsor Old Fashioned This cocktail was definitely on the sweeter side of the Old Fashioned scale, but we could tell the whiskey used was high quality, and it was definitely a yummy way to start our experience. Windsor Old Fashioned And then came that famous Le Cellier bread service. Le Cellier bread This basket came with three breads that symbolize the different regions in Canada. The Pretzel Bread represents Ontario, which has the second-largest Oktoberfest; the Sourdough represents Yukon’s spring festival in which the territory welcomes back daylight; and the Multigrain represents the central Providences. Le Cellier bread But you know what we really came here for… the STEAK!! We decided to switch things up from our usual truffble butter filet and try the USDA Prime New York Strip Steak. This steak was topped with Crispy Onions, had a Chimichurri sauce, and came with a side of Truffled Fingerling Potatoes as well as some blistered tomatoes. The meal cost $52. USDA Prime New York Strip Steak We ordered our steak medium-rare, and it was simply delicious! Savory without too much saltiness. USDA Prime New York Strip Steak We also found that the crispy onions added a nice textural element, and the chimichurri gave the stake an herby brightness, balancing out what would otherwise be a pretty heavy meal. There were some truly UNEXPECTED flavors in this dish, but it was just crazy enough to work wonderfully. Look at those crispy onions!! Because we LOVE to eat, we also ordered a side of Maple Whiskey-glazed Brussels Sprouts. This side dish costs $10. Maple Whiskey-glazed Brussels Sprouts And, you GUYS! These Brussels sprouts blew. us. away! They were perfectly crispy and the sweet glaze was honestly addicting. We had a steak and potatoes and we still ate ALL of our veggies. This dish could honestly convince even the pickiest eater that Brussels sprouts are delicious!! Our whole meal! We finished off our meal the way all great meals should be finished…with dessert, of course! We opted for the Maple Leaf Cheesecake for $12. Maple Leaf Cheesecake at Le Cellier This cheesecake came with Crème Fraîche Whipped Cream, Strawberries, and Shortbread Cookies. Maple Leaf Cheesecake This dessert was a totally solid option, but if we’re looking for a post-dinner sweet treat, we prefer options in France and Germany. But a cheesecake is still a cheesecake! Nosh Or Not Head on over to Le Cellier if: You’re looking for a quiet, intimate dining experience — think date night! You LOVE steak and red meat. There is currently a seafood dish on the menu, but this place is all about the beef. You’re looking for a nice, long, and relaxing meal in dim lighting. This place is a great way to escape from the hustle and bustle and heat of EPCOT. Skip Le Cellier if: You’re traveling with the kiddos. They may like the food here, but this place isn’t a fun, exciting dining spot. You’re dining on a budget! Steak entrees for dinner average well over $50 per person, which can get pricey fast. You’re going to spend the day riding Mission Space and Test Track. This meal is HEAVY. We love a nice, long nap (or show) after dining here. Overall Le Cellier remains a pinnacle of Disney signature dining. No matter when you go, you’ll be sure to get a quality meal and a cozy atmosphere in which to enjoy it. It makes for a great night out, especially if you’re good to go at a slower pace. If that’s what you’re looking for, we definitely recommend it! But if you’re looking to hop on a thrill ride right after, or are trying to hit multiple major attractions, this might eat up too much of your time. You might be better grabbing a quite bite to eat (and saving some $$$) at one of the many quick service options in Epcot, or one of the non-signature table service restaurants. As for our most recent experience? Overall, we really enjoyed our evening at Le Cellier! All of our food was super delicious, and we’ll totally relish an hour or so in a cool, quiet, air conditioned spot, especially in the middle of July! Like table service at EPCOT?
