  3. It’s hard to believe but the Disney World theme parks have been reopened for ONE MONTH already! Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom welcomed guests back on July 7 for their Cast Member previews, and since then the four parks have begun their phased reopenings. Main Street, U.S.A. With the promise of limited capacity, we have witnessed drastically lower crowds than what we would typically see during the summer season. But how have these crowd levels changed over the last month? This is a question we’re getting more and more often from our readers and social media followers, so let’s find out! Wait Times Are Getting A Bit Longer We knew the crowds would be lower when the theme parks reopened, but we perhaps weren’t as prepared for seeing such short wait times! Magic Kingdom posted seemingly record-breaking wait times for all of its attractions, even the popular ones like Peter Pan’s Flight (we see you, 10-minute wait!). Magic Kingdom Wait Times as of 6:30PM on July 11th Even with the temporary suspension of FastPass+, most of the attraction standby lines have been able to move at a consistent rate. So even the more popular rides with wait times of 30 or 40 minutes had lines that were moving right along. Splash Mountain Attraction Line Since the parks reopened a month ago, we have noticed a slight uptick in wait times. Across all four theme parks, wait times have seemed to stabilize at lengths that are slightly higher than the 5-10 minutes we saw on week one, but still significantly lower than what summer crowds typically yield. We’ll get into more specifics about crowds in each park shortly. Read more about what the wait times were like on Magic Kingdom’s grand reopening day here! Park Pass Reservation Availability is Becoming More Difficult to Plan For Arguably the biggest change to come about in Disney World’s phased reopening is the Park Pass Reservation System. Now, guests must have valid park admission as well as a valid Park Pass Reservation in order to enter the parks. Disney Park Pass Screenshot When the system first rolled out, reservations were in general widely available, with some early dates filling up for Annual Passholders right around the reopening dates. Since the theme parks reopened, however, Park Pass Reservations are becoming increasingly more difficult to get, at least for last-minute trips and especially for Annual Passholders. Annual Passholder Availability as of July 22nd Reservations have consistently filled up first for Annual Passholders, who, at the local level, we learned account for roughly 50% of current attendance numbers. Resort Guests and other standard Ticket Holders have been able to book reservations with more ease. Learn more about Disney World’s Park Pass Reservation System here! Hollywood Studios Continues to Be More Crowded Since its reopening day, Disney’s Hollywood Studios continues to be the park that at least FEELS the most crowded. There are fewer rides open in this park than in the others, and wait times are typically much longer for the more popular attractions. We even spotted Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway at one point turning guests away from queueing up in line when capacity for the line was reached! Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway Hollywood Studios has also consistently been the first park to show fully booked up Park Pass Reservations. Disney Park Pass Availability Screenshot from June 24 Boarding Groups for Rise of the Resistance are still notoriously difficult to obtain. In fact, it can be just as difficult to get a Boarding Group as it was before the closures began, even with the lowered capacity! While Virtual Queues and FastPass lines are on hold across the parks, for now, Rise of the Resistance is the only ride still requiring a spot in the virtual queue each day to gain admission. So even with lower crowds overall, this park still feels the most crowded — and sometimes dangerously so. Why does Hollywood Studios feel more crowded than the other parks? Learn more here! …Other Parks, Not So Much Despite what we have been experiencing at Hollywood Studios, the other three parks have much more elbow room, especially at EPCOT and Animal Kingdom. EPCOT Those two parks have seemed to be the best options for being able to easily maintain social distancing from other guests. EPCOT’s lower crowd levels are also reflected in that it was the last park to fill up for Annual Passholders for the month of August. Annual Passholder Availability for August. EPCOT is the only park available at this time. © Disney We cannot say at this time if these trends will continue, but it has so far been fairly consistent on a weekly basis: Hollywood Studios is crowded, while the other three parks are much more manageable. Take a look at EPCOT’s grand reopening day crowds here! But Disney Springs Is A Whole Other Ballgame That said, we do want to mention Disney Springs here as well, which is a whole other ballgame. While Disney Springs had very low crowds during its opening week in May, we’ve seen crowds steadily rise at the shopping and dining district over the past few months. And this past weekend we had reports from readers that the parking garage was full, and guests were being directed to park at a nearby hotel. Disney Springs We weren’t able to confirm this ourselves, but we can definitively report that Disney Springs crowds have ticked up significantly in recent weeks — to the point that it can be difficult to socially distance while there on nights and weekends. We’re also seeing a lot less mask compliance in Disney Springs than we are in the theme parks, and we want you to be aware of that as well. With the parks closing early and resorts closed off to many guests, it makes sense that the anyone-can-visit-anytime Disney Springs becomes the de facto dinner location for many guests. If you’re headed to Disney Springs and want to be as safe as possible, plan to go on a weekday versus in the evening or on weekends. Overall Despite the modest increase in crowds and wait times we’ve seen over the last month, it’s still vastly less crowded than what summer typically looks like in Disney World. This could be one of the reasons for the shortening of park hours, set to begin next month. If you have an upcoming trip to Disney World, you can definitely expect to see on average lower crowds than what you’ve seen in the past. But, keep in mind there is also less going on. With no fireworks, parades, or character meet and greets for the time being, you’re left with just attractions, dining, and shopping to fill your time (which is still quite a bit of stuff to do!). That alone can fill up a day in the parks, especially an abbreviated day. While we cannot guarantee you’ll experience a literal “ghost town,” you should have no problem accomplishing your top priorities in each of the theme parks (but be sure to snag that Hollywood Studios Park Pass early!). 4. As you’re probably aware EPCOT is in the midst of a pretty major transformation. Epcot Entrance The transformation includes the reworking of much of Future World, some enhancements around World Showcase, and the reimagining of the EPCOT Main Entrance. We’re super excited to see what the design of these areas will look like and now, thanks to a Walt Disney Imagineer, we have a sneak peek of the brand-new Main Entrance Fountain! Thanks to Disney World Imagineer and Site Portfolio Executive Zach Riddley, we’re taking a look at the brand-new pylons that went in LAST NIGHT for the main entrance fountain. Holy moly! Those are sooo pretty. EPCOT Entrance Pylons © @thezachriddley Riddley explained that the design team “took special interest in looking back to the original geometry for inspiration and infusing new features with a little bit of added magic to bridge the past, present and future of EPCOT.” We can totally see these influences in the design. In our opinion, the pylons are a pretty gorgeous addition to the main entrance area. EPCOT Entrance Pylons © @thezachriddley Another purpose of the pylons is to draw the eye upward and frame Spaceship Earth. These pics definitely make it look like they’re doing their job. The best part of this news? Riddley noted that the completed look for the fountain will be revealed later this year! Eek! EPCOT Entrance Pylons © @thezachriddley We’re keeping a close eye on alllll the updates to development in EPCOT so stay tuned to DFB to know about all of the news and changes! 6. Disney World has been open for almost a month now and it definitely feels…different. Guest Relations Cast Member It is a new normal — and we’re not the only ones still adjusting. Disney is having to contend with some complex and unexpected situations in and around the parks. Already, we’ve seen a few changes to how Disney World is handling its reopening; let’s take a look at a few of the BIGGEST! 1. Changes to the Face Mask Policy First up, we’ve got the changes to the face mask policy in Disney World. Face masks have been a pretty hot topic and the first weeks of the reopening we saw a LOT of questions about what does and does NOT qualify as a face mask in the Disney parks. As Disney learned more from health officials as well as guest use in the first weeks of reopening, they made several BIG changes to their policy. Cast Member Initially, there was a lot of back-and-forth about whether gaiter-style masks were allowed in the parks. Originally, they were A-OK in Disney Springs, but once the parks reopened Disney finally updated their face mask policy to officially exclude gaiters. But that wasn’t the last policy update. EPCOT Cast Members Wave Hello On Re-Opening Day! Disney also changed the wording on when mask removal was allowed to specify that masks can only be removed when guests are eating or drinking while stationary and socially distanced. After this change was made to the policy, Disney made significant efforts to communicate the update to guests in the parks through the use of added signage and even Cast Members walking around to remind guests to wear their face coverings. Updated face mask policy at Disney World Similarly, we saw new signs pop up in the parks to accompany the most recent face mask update when Disney officially banned the use of face masks with valves, holes, or mesh. As you can see, Disney has done a LOT of fine-tuning with the face mask policy, so if you’re headed to Disney World soon, make sure you read up on the most recent iteration. Click here to learn more about when you can remove your face mask in the parks! 2. Changes to the Rise of the Resistance Virtual Queue Another big change has been with the virtual queue for Rise of the Resistance in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. Even prior to opening we saw some changes as Disney initially announced that virtual queues would not be used for attractions upon reopening — before backtracking to say that Rise of the Resistance would use a modified version of its virtual queue. Rise of the Resistance Thank GOODNESS! I can’t imagine what things would have been like without the virutal queue for Rise! The modified queue introduced three different windows during which guests could try to grab a Boarding Group at 10AM, 1PM, and 4PM (instead of all at once when the park opens). After reopening, the three windows were used for a while until Disney changed the times to only two: at 10AM and 2PM — which is the way the queue is run now. Riding Rise of the Resistance certainly isn’t the easiest thing in the world, so it’s important to keep up with these changes! To learn about the current Rise of the Resistance Virtual Queue — click here! 3. The Addition of More Disney Park Passes for Annual Passholders A park ticket isn’t the only thing you’ll need to get into a Disney World park nowadays. You’ll need to secure a Disney Park Pass theme park reservation too! This new measure was put in place to help Disney control the number of people in the parks and they’ve had to make a few changes to the way availability works since the parks opened. Magic Kingdom Entrance Disney Park Passes have been especially difficult to come by for Annual Passholders, and there have been several instances of Disney adding Annual Passholder availability within the system after parks were fully booked up for Passholders. Disney CEO Bob Chapek explained that this was due to a lower than expected proportion of out-of-state guests coming to the parks in opening weeks, meaning they could make the adjustment to welcome more Annual Passholders. So if you’re a passholder and things look grim park pass-wise, keep checking! Click here to learn more about WHO is visiting Disney World right now. 4. Changes to Hotel Opening Dates Though several Disney World resort hotels have reopened with the parks, there are several that remain closed — including some that don’t have reopening dates at all! But even for those hotels that do have set reopening dates, things are not set in stone. Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort Mug A few weeks ago, Disney made a pretty MAJOR change by delaying the reopening of four Disney World resort hotels. The reopening of Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort was delayed two months to October 4th, the reopening of Disney’s Art of Animation Resort was delayed three months to November 1st, and the reopenings of Disney’s Beach Club Resort and Disney’s BoardWalk Inn were delayed indefinitely. BoardWalk Inn We’ve even seen some delays with the Swan and Dolphin Hotels too. That’s a LOT of changes! We’re always keeping an eye on those reopening dates though, so stay tuned to DFB to make sure you have the latest update on any hotel reopening changes! Click here to see all of the listed hotel reopening dates! 5. Park Hours Changes The most recent change on this list has to do with park hours! As of just a few days ago, Disney notified guests of an upcoming reduction in park hours for all four Disney World theme parks. Of course, park hours are always subject to change, and they do tend to shorten in the fall months; but now our Disney days are officially going to end even earlier. EPCOT Beginning September 8th, the theme park hours are 9AM to 6PM in Magic Kingdom (previously 9AM-7PM daily), 11AM to 7PM in EPCOT (previously 11AM-9PM), 10AM to 7PM in Hollywood Studios (previously 10AM-8PM), and 9AM to 5PM in Animal Kingdom (previously 8AM-6PM). All of the parks saw a reduction of one or two hours per day. Click here to learn more about the hours changes! 6. The Addition of Temperature Checks at Resort Hotel Restaurants Last but certainly not least has been the addition of temperature checks at table-service restaurants in the Disney World resort hotels. When the resort hotels first opened back in June, we were surprised that temperature screenings were not in place for guests entering the hotels. It appears Disney wanted to add an extra layer of checks for guests dining in hotels. Disney Screenshot Now, when you check in to a table service restaurant at the Disney World resorts, you need to pass a temperature screening with a temperature below 100.4 degrees. If your temperature is higher, you’ll be directed to a re-screening, just like at the parks and Disney Springs. This change definitely makes some sense to us considering guests have to go through temperature checks pretty much EVERYWHERE else accessible to the public in Disney World. Click here to learn more about these added temperature checks. There you have it! Those are all of the biggest changes we’ve seen in Disney World since they reopened — and we might see a few more before things really settle. So, as always, stay tuned to DFB for all of the latest updates so that you don’t miss a beat! Have any questions about these changes? Ask them in the comments! 14. This week marks the first month since Disney World reopened after its longest closure in history. Disneyland Resort’s theme parks and hotels, however, have yet to reopen. Disneyland’s Gate – Still closed. After announcing a prospective grand reopening date, Disneyland Resort’s reopening was delayed except for Downtown Disney which officially welcomed back guests on July 15th. So far, there hasn’t been any news regarding when Disneyland would reopen — not so much as a mention even during the Q3 earnings call which took place last week. Now according to The Orange County Register, “California state officials are reviewing how and when to reopen Disneyland, Universal Studios Hollywood and other theme parks.” Disneyland Resort “Theme parks are not permitted to open in California at this time, under current public health orders,” California Health and Human Services spokesperson Kate Folmar said via email. “We will continue to review health data to determine when and how theme parks may consider reopening at lower risk to staff and visitors.” Disneyland Resort Disneyland along with other major theme park competitors including Universal Studios Hollywood, Six Flags Magic Mountain, Legoland California, and SeaWorld San Diego all shut down in March and have yet to reopen. Some smaller parks such as Knott’s Berry Farm have been permitted to reopen but only to serve food. No rides or other guest experiences have resumed. Earlier this summer, state officials seemed onboard with reopening California’s theme parks as Phase 3 of their proposed reopening plan seemed to be approaching quickly. California’s Orange County (where Disneyland resides) met the required criteria and was cleared to transition into “full stage two” of California’s reopening plan but as cases began to spike, reopening plans were rolled back. Disneyland Hotel At this time, the California government is still reviewing the timeline to reopen locations like Disneyland. The California Department of Public Health will issue detailed guidelines pertaining to how to minimize the risk of spreading COVID-19 when the parks reopen and the state says they’ll be working alongside the California theme parks to develop their new health and safety plans together. 20. Got a special place in your heart for Experiment 626 (a.k.a. Stitch)? Stitch Hat We’ve found lots of fun Stitch merchandise recently — everything from a Stitch hat to a Stitch cooler! As we were walking around Magic Kingdom recently, we noticed something missing from a spot in Tomorrowland where we used to be able to find our alien pal. It looks like Stitch has truly left the building! Several years ago a Stitch-themed attraction, Stitch’s Great Escape, opened in Tomorrowland, replacing ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter. Stitch’s Great Escape eventually transitioned to a seasonal operation schedule around 2016. For a while, part of the building was used as a Stitch meet n’ greet location called Stitch’s Alien Encounter Character Greeting! Stitch’s Alien Encounter Character Greeting! Stitch’s Great Escape had been temporarily closed for quite some time, but we recently shared the news that Stitch’s Great Escape would in fact be permanently closed. Now it seems like we’ve definitely said aloha (goodbye this time, not hello) to Stitch at this Tomorrowland spot. When we walked through Magic Kingdom recently we noticed that the entire Stitch sign in front of the former attraction spot has been removed. Stitch Sign Removed You can see the entry doors to the attraction just past the large grey container in front, and you can even see the fan that used to be near the sign still hanging, but the sign itself is gone. Stitch Sign Removed Looks like we truly have seen the end of Stitch at this location for now. Stitch Sign Removed If you’re a big fan of the mischievous experiment, don’t worry — we spotted Stitch greeting guests in Tomorrowland in another spot, so just keep your eyes open for him! The removal of the sign does leave us wondering what will come into this spot in the future? We hope it’ll be something fresh and exciting to add to Tomorrowland. Need more Stitch? 25. Plans for a new 900-room deluxe resort at Disney World called Reflections — A Disney Lakeside Lodge were announced last year. Reflections — A Disney Lakeside Lodge The nature-themed accommodations were to be situated on the shoreline of Bay Lake, tucked between Disney’s Wilderness Lodge and Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground and clearing of the land had already commenced. Disney has recently told us certain projects will be picked back up in phases, but they’ve yet to make an official statement regarding whether or not construction on Reflections — A Lakeside Lodge will resume. Despite having several construction permits filed in the area a few months ago, construction and development on the new resort may have been canceled. Reflections ©Disney Reporter Scott Gustin was the first to notice Reflections — A Disney Lakeside Lodge has been recently removed from the official D23 blog announcement that was posted in 2019. At the time this announcement was made, current Disney CEO Bob Chapek was acting as Disney Parks, Experiences and Products Chairman and unveiled a series of upcoming developments we could look forward to on our future trips to Disney World. Rather strangely, other parts of the D23 post haven’t been altered yet. We already know Disney’s plans for EPCOT have changed since the announcement for the new Mary Poppins-themed attraction was made. Disney has since postponed the project indefinitely, but they haven’t been removed from the post. Mary Poppins Attraction ©Disney We still can’t be sure at this time whether or not Reflections — A Lakeside Lodge has been tabled for now or not, but it’s a possibility! We’ll be sure to keep you updated with any official announcements made by Disney regarding their plans for Reflections — A Lakeside Lodge, so stay tuned! Calling D23 Gold Members!
