It’s been several months since we’ve been able to step beyond those gates and into Disneyland Park to enjoy the sights, sounds, and magic of the happiest place on earth. And, we’ll just say, we’re in serious need of some snacks from Bengal Barbecue! Disneyland Gate Although we’re still waiting for an announcement of a new reopening date for Disneyland Resort, we’ve got updates now about some of the changes we can expect to see in the Anaheim theme parks when guests can finally enjoy them again. According to the Orange County Register, Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure “will expand mobile ordering for food and drinks” when they reopen “to promote contactless payments, reduce wait times and cut down on long lines at quick service restaurants.” The OCR notes that new dining locations will be added to the Mobile Order feature on the Disneyland app. Disney California Adventure Park According the OCR, Disney officials have stated that The Tropical Hideaway in Disneyland and Studio Catering Co. in Disney California Adventures will both be added to the mobile ordering feature when the parks reopen. Tropical Hideaway The OCR also reports that Disney officials have indicated that “Disneyland will strongly encourage mobile ordering as the primary way to order food and beverages” at quick service restaurants where the mobile order feature is available. We’ve seen a similar policy in Disney World. Other changes are also expected as part of this expansion of mobile order. Disneyland Train Station The OCR notes that the Disneyland App will expand the payment options available when using mobile order beyond just credit cards — adding Apple Pay and Disney gift cards as available payment options. Similar options were added to the Mobile Order feature in Disney World back in May of this year. Snacks on Pixar Pier Additionally, Disneyland will lower the minimum age to place a mobile order to 13 years old (down from 18 years old). Bengal Barbecue Several restaurants in both parks are already on the Mobile Order platform, including Bengal Barbecue in Disneyland, Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo in Disneyland’s Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, and Award Wieners and Corn Dog Castle in Disney California Adventure. Corn Dog Castle What’s not on the Mobile Order list yet? The OCR lists the following: In Disneyland Park Clarabelle’s Daisy’s Diner French Market Restaurant Market House Plaza Inn Pluto’s Dog House Rancho del Zocalo In Disney California Adventure Boardwalk Pizza & Pasta Cozy Cone Motel Fiddler, Fifer & Practical Cafe Ghirardelli Soda Fountain & Chocolate Shop Red’s Hot Chicken Cone How many of those will be added to the mobile order feature is unclear right now, but more details should be released soon. Over in Disney World, since the reopening we’ve also seen more and more restaurants added to the mobile order feature on the My Disney Experience app. We’ve even seen additional features added to the app, like Walk-Up Waitlists for some table service restaurants and even a mobile order table service to go option. We’ll be interested to see if some of these features make their way over to Disneyland as well. We’ll definitely be keeping our eyes open for more information and we’ll let you know what we find. Since it first opened in December 2019, Rise of the Resistance has widely been considered THE must-do attraction in Disney World. Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance Given the ride’s popularity, guests are required to obtain a boarding group in order to experience the attraction, rather than waiting in an hours-long physical queue. Currently, boarding groups are made available twice during the day — once when the park first opens at 10AM and again at 2PM. But as with other attractions around Disney World, capacity for Rise of the Resistance is limited, which means it might not be an easy feat to snag a boarding group. After hearing from many friends that they were not able to get boarding groups or ride the attraction, we decided to poll our audience to get an idea of just how many Disney World guests missed out on riding the most popular attraction in Orlando with the current system. Why It’s So Hard To Get A Rise of the Resistance Boarding Group In order to get a boarding group for Rise of the Resistance, there are a few important steps guests have to follow. First, every member of the party that plans on riding the attraction must have already entered Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Each member of the party must also be linked together on My Disney Experience. Screenshot of My Disney Experience App Disney recently made an update to the My Disney Experience app which automatically selects anyone eligible from your friends and family to obtain a boarding group at the time you’re requesting one, which should make the process quicker, especially for those with large parties. And since every second counts when it comes to securing a boarding group, this could make a huge difference! Rise of the Resistance Boarding Group But while Disney has made improvements to the process of obtaining a boarding group, we’ve still heard reports about (and personally experienced) the ongoing difficulty of grabbing a spot in the virtual queue. In fact, just the other day we spotted a long line of guests who were unable to get a boarding group, waiting to speak with the Guest Experience Team. Line for the Guest Experience Team We’ve regularly seen the 10AM boarding groups fully distributed within a matter of minutes…sometimes seconds. And since the 2PM boarding group availability can vary based on attraction downtime earlier in the day, trying in the afternoon is certainly not a “sure bet” either. Rise Preshow We wanted to get a feel for the experience of our readers, so we asked our Instagram followers, “Have you tried unsuccessfully to get a Rise of the Resistance boarding group on a visit to Disney’s Hollywood Studios recently?” And it looks like quite a few people have run into some struggles lately! Of the first 300 responses we received, 205 said YES they have tried unsuccessfully to get a boarding group, 68 said NO they have not experienced any issues and 27 said other difficulties outside of getting a boarding group kept them from experiencing the attraction. Pie Chart of Our Readers’ Responses When Asked If They’ve Unsuccessfully Tried to Get a ROTR Boarding Group Lately Let’s take a closer look at some of the responses! “Yes, I’ve unsuccessfully tried to get a Rise of the Resistance boarding group!” Of those who responded, 68% said they’ve recently tried to get a boarding group but they were unsuccessful. Many mentioned that they were ready to go as soon as the boarding groups became available, but availability was still gone before they had the chance to complete the process. “Yes, within seconds of 10AM I got the red screen that it was full.” Lieutenant Beck on Rise of the Resistance Others said that technical difficulties kept them from snagging a group. “Yes, just today. Guest services said they had a major system problem this morning.” A few different types of glitches were mentioned which caused hangups for our readers. “Yes! It said that we were not in the park, even though we had scanned tickets.” We here at DFB have actually had this issue too! We asked our readers: Do you think Space 220 will open by the end of the year? Here’s what they said. “No, I’ve been able to get a Rise of the Resistance boarding group without any issues!” On the other hand, not everyone has run into trouble. Of those who responded, 23% said they’ve recently been able to snag a boarding group with no issues. Some mentioned that they were able to join a group in the 10AM drop. “Nope! We got groups 5 and 6 on two separate days last month.” Rise of the Resistance And others mentioned they were successful with the afternoon drop. “No. We went into Hollywood Studios two days after noon and got boarding groups on both days at 2PM.” We asked our readers: Who is the REAL star of the Haunted Mansion. Here’s what they said! “I didn’t have trouble with the boarding groups, but I STILL wasn’t able to ride!” Others mentioned that while getting a boarding group wasn’t the issue, they ran into another problem which kept them from experiencing the attraction. Of those who responded, 9% fell into this category. Some received a backup boarding group that didn’t end up getting the chance to ride. “Yes and no. I was given a ‘backup group’ that was never called.” Rise of the Resistance And others DID receive a numbered boarding group but were still unable to ride due to delays throughout the day. “Was excited to get [boarding group] 32 and STILL didn’t get to ride.” Some respondents also mentioned that the attraction didn’t open at all on the day they visited. “I got a boarding group the day it never opened because of a lightning strike the night before.” You can watch a video of that very lightning strike HERE! So, while about a quarter of those who responded have been able to grab a Rise of the Resistance boarding group without issue, the majority of respondents have run into some hurdles while trying to fight the First Order! What has YOUR experience been with obtaining a boarding group?? Let us know in the comments! So How Can You Increase Your Chances of Getting A Rise of the Resistance Boarding Group? Is this survey scientific? Nope. Are people who did not get on the ride more likely to respond? Very possibly. But the results are compelling, and it’s worth it to focus a little bit harder on your strategy to ensure you get a Rise of the Resistance Boarding Group these days! Especially as the parks are getting a bit more crowded in general than they were at reopening in July. We’ve got some great tips for making sure you get the best possible chance for scoring a Rise of the Resistance Boarding Group on your visit. While we can’t control the weather or Disney’s ride systems failing, we can help you to be as prepared as possible for success! From a blimp flying over Disney World to a Barbershop within the blue walls of the “bubble,” we’ve been watching all of the news coming out of the NBA “bubble” since some of our favorite basketball teams resumed the 2019-2020 NBA season in Disney World at the ESPN Wide World of Sports. NBA Experience Shop Although the NBA conference finals will be wrapping up soon, it seems MORE basketball may be on its way to Disney World. According to ESPN, conference and team sources have said that ESPN is “planning to move at least eight of its men’s college basketball events to the ESPN Wide World of Sports property at Walt Disney World.” ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex ESPN notes that at least eight of the 10 nonconference events that ESPN runs in November and December “are expected to take place in Orlando this year.” Specifically, the 8 events that ESPN reports are expected to move to the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex are the following: Champions Classic: Duke, Michigan State, Kansas, Kentucky Charleston Classic: Charleston, Florida State, Houston, Oklahoma State, Penn State, Seton Hall, Tennessee, VCU Myrtle Beach Invitational: Charlotte, Dayton, Loyola Chicago, Missouri, Nebraska, Penn, Pitt, Utah State NIT Season Tip-Off: Arizona, Cincinnati, St. John’s, Texas Tech Wooden Legacy: Georgetown, Kansas, UCLA, Virginia Orlando Invitational: Auburn, Belmont, Boise State, Gonzaga, Michigan State, Siena, Saint Louis, Xavier Jimmy V Classic: Gonzaga, Tennessee, Baylor, Rutgers Diamond Head Classic: Arizona State, Hawaii, North Texas, Oklahoma, San Diego State, Saint Mary’s, Seattle, Temple NBA Merchandise According to team sources who spoke with ESPN, the protocols that will be in place for these college events are expected to be different than the ones used for the NBA’s bubble. It’s anticipated that these college basketball events will begin on November 25th, which is the start of the 2020-2021 college basketball season. NBA Merchandise The events are expected to run for the first two weeks of the season, according to ESPN. The specific dates on which the events will take place are still unknown. ESPN reports, however, “there will be events overlapping during those two weeks, with up to three games going on at once.” Basketball Merchandise ESPN also notes that there is a potential for “crossover games” where teams from different events may actually play against each other outside of their scheduled events. Although sources have indicated that ESPN’s events are expected to include the teams originally scheduled, some issues, including scheduling uncertainty with certain teams, could force the operators of the events to revisit this issue. NBA Spirit Jersey Overall, the nonconference slate for college basketball is expected to take place in “controlled environments across the country.” Bubbles in Houston and Atlanta and other locations have been proposed. NBA Merchandise We’ll definitely be interested to see what the protocols will look like if college basketball does come to Disney World. How will the arrangement differ from the NBA bubble? Will we see more barbershops or other items unique to the college basketball events around Disney World? Will there be college basketball merch? We’ll keep an eye on more information about this situation and we’ll let you know what we find. Click here to check out all of the NBA merch we spotted in Disney World! Ever wanted to dine like royalty? Vaulted Ceilings in Cinderella’s Royal Table You can truly feel like a princess when you eat at Cinderella’s Royal Table in Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. But, let’s be honest, this place has always been off-the-charts expensive. Pre-closure, you could drop over $300 (after tax and tip) for your family of four, and it wasn’t even all you can eat. But we’ve always still recommended it as a one-and-done — because getting the experience to dine inside Cinderella Castle AND seeing five princesses at once almost made it worth the cost. Especially if this was your one and only experience to dine here. And since the cost is so astronomical here, you’d expect that, with the news that CRT will be reopening SANS princesses, we’d see a drastic price reduction. After all, fan-favorite, all you can eat buffet Chef Mickey’s in Disney World’s Contemporary Resort reopened — character-less — at nearly half the cost of its original Fab Five-festooned dining experience. (And it’s actually a pretty good deal right now.) Cinderella’s Royal Table But you would be WRONG. So…This Kind Of Seems Like A Rip-Off? As it turns out, Cinderella’s Royal Table is reopening with only a $13 price reduction per meal for adults, going from $75 pre-closure to $62 when it reopens. $62!!! (FYI, kids will cost $37, compared to the previous $45.) So let’s break down what you get for $62: bread basket, plastic sword or wand, plastic wishing star, (pretty mediocre but better than it used to be…I’m being honest) entree from a (smaller-than-you’d-expect) menu, dessert, non-alcoholic beverage. No princess meet and greets. Wand and Wishing Star at Cinderella’s Royal Table But yes, you do get to eat in the castle. So let’s talk about that. Maybe Disney Will Surprise Us… Eating in Cinderella Castle is a big deal. That’s just the truth. Anytime you get a chance to dine in a Disney World weenie you should closely consider taking advantage of it. But even that may not be worth worth $62. So let’s put this out there into the universe: maybe Disney will surprise us. Breakfast at Cinderella’s Royal Table When Be Our Guest Restaurant reopened in July with a too-expensive prix fixe lunch and dinner menu, they brought in a big deal extra — the Beast. Beast! Yep, the Beast himself — not advertised AT ALL as being there after reopening, even though he was a draw at dinner pre-closure — traverses the dining rooms every twenty minutes or so, gazing worriedly at the Enchanted Rose in the West Wing and bowing to his guests majestically in the Ballroom. Beast with the Rose This was huge. For those of us who weren’t expecting to see him and who had already accepted our fate of spending too much money on a meal solely because we’d get to see the inside of the Beast’s castle, this immediately made eating there almost worth it! So what if Disney does this at Cindy’s, eh? What if Cinderella herself appears every 20 minutes to wind her way between the tables at a safe social distance, waving benevolently to diners and smiling pacifically to families who may or may not have bickered their way up Main Street earlier that morning (hey, we’ve all done it) and who are about to feel the pinch of a $250 meal? This would do a lot for the optics on this (IMHO) overpriced meal, right? Cinderella What Are The Chances? Will they do it? Probably not. Disney has already visually decreed that princesses don’t wear masks — even when in socially-distanced, outdoor cavalcades. So having Cindy, mask-less, walk around an indoor, recycled-air restaurant in the middle of a pandemic would likely put her in too much danger in the current circumstances for them to attempt it (or for the union to allow it) I’m guessing. Snow White Greeting Guests at Cinderella’s Royal Table So that leaves us here, wondering how they’re justifying charging this much for a single mediocre meal with only the dining room itself as the draw. Well, if you know us at all, then you know we’ve already got a reservation for Cinderella’s Royal Table on reopening day. We’ll be sharing any surprises and updates ASAP. So stay tuned to DFB and our social media channels for real-time updates and thoughts. It’s a mixed metaphor, but fingers crossed there’s “something there that wasn’t there before” to make this worth the price tag. Just a few weeks ago, we shared with you that Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort will not be reopening until the summer of 2021 to finish some refurbishment work, including a Moana-inspired look for the Resort’s guest rooms. Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort The refurbishment work is set to begin in October, and now we’ve got a few updates on how that construction could impact your stay at Disney’s Polynesian Villas and Bungalows or simply a trip to dine at the resort. If, during the next few weeks, you’ll be headed to the Polynesian, here’s what you need to know. Front Desk This morning, we spoke to a Disney Cast Member who told us that, beginning September 28th, the front desk at the Polynesian should be moving, temporarily, to a location within the Pago Pago building at the Resort. Currently, the front desk is located in the Great Ceremonial House — the main lobby building. This is also where the Resort’s gift shops and restaurants like Kona Cafe and Captain Cook’s are located. Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort In the map below, the Pago Pago building is the one circled in red. The Great Ceremonial House is the one on the bottom left. ©Disney | Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort Map It is toward the right-hand side of the resort — closer to the Ticket & Transportation Center than the Great Ceremonial House. Great Ceremonial House — Entrance The Cast Member we spoke to also stated that, beginning on September 28th, guests will not be able to enter the Great Ceremonial House via its traditional front entrance. Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort Entrance Instead, guests will only be able to access the building through the side and back entrances. Great Ceremonial House — Restaurants and Shops According to the Cast Member we spoke to, the refurbishment work at the Polynesian should begin on October 4th, and the construction at the Great Ceremonial House should generally take place Sundays through Thursdays from 10PM to 4:30AM. Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort The Cast Member who we spoke to also said that some gift shops and restaurants within or around the Great Ceremonial House should have adjusted operating hours beginning October 4th. The restaurants/shops the Cast Member mentioned specifically are the following: Kona Cafe, Moana Mercantile, Tambu Lounge, and Pineapple Lanai. Tambu Lounge These shops and restaurants are, however, set to remain open during the construction. Monorail As we’ve shared previously, as part of the renovations going on at the Polynesian, the monorail station at the resort will be closing temporarily. The Cast Member who we spoke to said that Disney Transportation has yet to announce an official date. Currently, the Walt Disney World website for the Polynesian states “The monorail service to this resort will be temporarily suspended beginning in early October 2020.” Monorail at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort If you have reservations to stay or dine at this Resort in the future this is just something to keep in mind. The monorail station at the Ticket & Transportation Center is a relatively short walk away from the Polynesian, so you’ll still have the option to take the monorail to the Ticket & Transportation Center station and then walk the remaining distance to the Resort. Hi There, Monorail We’ll keep our eyes open for more updates related to the Polynesian, and all of the hotels in Disney World, and let you know what we find. Our FAVORITE nachos are now available on mobile order from the Polynesian! Check out all the details! Join the DFB Newsletter to get all the breaking news right in your inbox! The Disney World park hours have been changing a lot in recent weeks. Disney World Overall, the hours were shortened coming into September with Disney announcing an extension for select parks coming in November. Additionally, we spotted small hours extensions in Animal Kingdom and EPCOT this Saturday and just Animal Kingdom on Sunday. Now, the rest of the parks are following suit. When we checked in on park hours this morning, we noticed that all four of the Disney World theme parks — Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Animal Kingdom, and Hollywood Studios — will be open one or two hours longer than usual September 25th, 26th, and 27th. Park Hours Screenshot Magic Kingdom is typically open from 9AM to 6PM, but will remain open until 7PM this weekend. EPCOT is typically open from 11AM to 7PM, but will remain open through 9PM. Hollywood Studios is typically open from 10AM to 7PM, but will be open through 8PM. And Animal Kingdom is typically open 9AM to 5PM and will instead be open 8AM to 6PM. Park Hours Screenshot We have seen in increase in crowds on the weekends in Disney World so it’s possible that that demand has been part of the reason for the extension. Stay tuned to DFB for the latest updates! Click here to learn more about this weekend’s hours extension. Join the DFB Newsletter to get all the breaking news right in your inbox! World Rhino Day Brings Big News for Disney’s Animal Kingdom
Disney4me posted a topic in Disney Blogs
I’m always struck with awe at the sheer power and size of rhinos, so of course, I couldn’t let World Rhino Day go by without taking time to appreciate and promote the protection of this magnificent endangered species. Did you know rhinoceros are the world’s second largest land animal and among the most endangered animals in the wild due to poaching? Today, I’m thrilled to share that Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park has big news for the future of rhinos – we have three pregnant white rhinoceros in our care. It’s the first time we have ever had this many horns and hooves on the horizon. Kendi, who was the first rhino born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in 1999, is the first due, with a calf expected to be born sometime this October.Jao is expected to give birth sometime in fall 2021.And rounding out the “crash,” which is what we call a rhino herd, Lola is due in fall / winter 2021. Dr. Natalie Mylniczenko, one of our veterinarians, has been along on the journey with our moms-to-be. Through routine checkups and ultrasounds, Dr. Natalie has worked closely with the rhino keeper team to keep a close eye on how the pregnancies are progressing. She may be one of the only people in the world that has seen a rhino at 2 centimeters. Planning for a rhino birth requires time and patience for all involved. Rhinos have a long gestation period, approximately 16-18 months, so each of these births are roughly 1 ½ years in the making. Add to that the time that goes into research to pave the way. All three rhinos were chosen to breed through Species Survival Plans (SSPs), which are overseen by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums to ensure the responsible breeding of endangered species. Dugan, the herd’s bull, is the father of all three calves. Our animal care team is eager and ready to help welcome these rhino calves upon their arrivals. Once born, they acclimate quickly – rhino calves weigh between 88-140 lbs. at birth and can stand up within the first hour. They stay very close to their mothers for the first three years of their life. We are so excited about these new additions coming soon to our rhino family and we’ll continue to keep you updated here and at @drmarkatdisney on Instagram and @DisneyASE on Facebook.
