  1. Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate’s life for me! The Disney Dream If you’re boarding a cruise soon, and one for a leisurely vacation, not one to plunder and pillage, then you may want to know about some of the laws that are around to protect you, and you’ll be expected to follow. Wait, Did You Say “Merry Time” or “Maritime”? You didn’t imagine by opening this post that you’d be getting a partial law degree, did you? What? That’s NOT why you read DFB? Ok, ok. We’ll keep the legal jargon to a minimum and splice in some humor and maybe some food references (we are DFB, afterall). But we are responsible reporters, and we wanna give you the facts, you know, with a splash of fun. Disney Dream Are you ready to dive in? Grab your favorite cruise snack (you know, either snacks you eat on a cruise, or land-based snacks that are shaped like boats, both are acceptable), and let’s discuss the nuances of Maritime Law. No, no, just kidding, don’t choke on your boat-shaped snack! It’s just a little maritime overview. Here we go! Maritime law, also known as admiralty law, is a body of laws and treaties that govern private maritime business and other nautical matters, such as shipping or violations occurring on open water. So, who oversees (overseas? ok, ok, too many puns might compromise the grammatical integrity of this post) the maritime laws? Those folks are the International Maritime Organization (IMO), an agency of the United Nations. Maritime law exists to protect the world’s open seas and the people who use it. Without it, there would likely be anarchy and a collapse of the global economy. No big deal, right? Disney Dream So, the smarty-pants in the IMO decide on the rules and policies that ships and their crews must follow. Regarding passenger behavior, the laws on a cruise ship align with the flag the ship is flying under. A ship flies the flag of the country where it’s registered, and, in general, the laws onboard a ship are the laws of that country. ©Disney So, if you’re planning to take a cruise out of a different country, you may wanna brush up on your international law since that country’s laws will be what’s applied on board. This probably won’t affect you too much, but keep an eye on those legal drinking ages as those change from country to country. To Light Up or Not to Light Up — That is the Question. Just when you thought you had all of the federal laws figured out, the good ol’ U.S. steps up and confuses everyone with varying state laws (way to go, America, we love you, but why you gotta be so complicated?) With marijuana laws being different from state to state, the cruise industry must deal with passengers depending on state legalization. Although many states allow possession of specific amounts of marijuana, major cruise lines have clarified their stance on cannabis and CBD. Onboard the Disney Dream Carnival Cruise Line’s policy states: “While certain CBD products used for medicinal purposes may be legal in the US, they are not legal in all the ports we visit and therefore are also considered prohibited items. Guests will need to consult with their physician for other suitable alternatives.” Norwegian Cruise Line’s policy states: “All illegal narcotics/drugs, including marijuana prescribed for medical purposes and other items used as drug paraphernalia. This includes all products containing CBD, oils, candies, and gummies or any product containing THC.” Royal Caribbean’s policy states: In no event shall any Passenger bring on board the Vessel any illegal controlled substances (including medical marijuana). Marijuana possession and/or use, including medical marijuana, and possession or use of any illegal drugs, is strictly prohibited in many jurisdictions visited and on the Vessel at all times, as well as in terminals, during shore excursions or any other part of the cruise, regardless of any local, state, or other laws which might permit use or possession of marijuana. Keg & Compass Disney Cruise Line’s policy states: “In accordance with United States federal regulations and local laws in the destinations we visit, illegal narcotics—including synthetic designer drugs—and marijuana (even if legal where you reside or medically prescribed)—are prohibited on board the ships and on Disney Castaway Cay.” Ultimately, if you sail from a port within the United States, you must follow U.S. federal law, which prohibits use and possession. Your best bet is to get familiar with the policies and proceed at your own discretion. Are you cruising soon? And what about cigars, vaping, or cigarettes, you ask? You may smoke on a cruise ship, but only in designated smoking areas. On most ships, all indoor public spaces are off-limits except the casino (or part of the casino), a cigar lounge (if the ship has one), and designated sections in nightclubs. Pretty much all ships prohibit smoking or vaping of any kind in stateroom and on stateroom balconies/verandas with hefty financial penalties. Outside, smokers are typically restricted to small areas on one or more decks. The designated area may differ from one ship to another within the same cruise line. Smoking information can usually be found in the FAQ section of the cruise line’s website, but when in doubt, ask upon boarding. Disney Cruise Line On European cruise lines, there’s usually a bit more room for smokers to spread out, but even those lines are cutting back. “And I’m packing your angry eyes…just in case.” You can pack your angry eyes, though hopefully, on a cruise, you won’t need them. But there are some things you should definitely leave at home. Each cruise line will have its own list, but standard prohibited items can include: Weapons, Firearms, and Ammunition Marijuana and other illicit drugs Explosives Flammable liquids Appliances and other electrical items Drones Pre-cooked meals Recreational sporting equipment Bicycles Pets ©Getty Images Though you probably aren’t planning to bring your blender, electric blanket, or cricket bat with you on a cruise, obviously, someone has tried because there are some pretty specific rules about it. Be sure to review your cruise line’s guest services page for a very thorough list of what will not be permitted on the ship. S-A-F-E-T-Y Who among us has been on a ship and not reenacted the Jack and Rose “I’m Flying” scene from Titanic? Shoot, I’d do it on the Jungle Cruise if the Skipper would let me stand up. We’ve all seen, loved, and been traumatized by that movie. Why didn’t Rose scoot over and let Jack on the door? Captain Minnie on the Ship’s Bow Because of the tragedy of the Titanic, the IMO established the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Seas (SOLAS). This international treaty regulates safety standards related to ship construction, navigation, firefighting, and lifesaving equipment. So you can rest assured that when you board any cruise, you won’t have to rely on the benevolence of a cruise mate to share a floating door with you, should the ship go down; there will be a spot reserved for you on a bona fide lifeboat. Disney Wonder You also have the Titanic to thank for that mandatory muster drill. Don’t try to dodge it. The crew is counting everyone and checking off lists. And just like Baskin Robbins, they always find out. This Passport Has Fine Print First, you’ll need to see if you’re a citizen of the country the ship is departing from. If you’re coming to Port Canaveral for a Disney Cruise, but you’re a citizen of Denmark, then you’ll definitely need a passport. Got it? Mount Rustmore Some cruise itineraries include foreign ports that require a passport for disembarkation. This is most commonly an issue for travelers on a Caribbean cruise. Barbados, Guadeloupe, Haiti, Martinique, St. Barts, and Trinidad and Tobago all require U.S. citizens to present a valid passport to disembark and enter the country. Castaway Cay If your itinerary includes a country requiring a passport, your cruise line will require you to have the passport at check-in. Note that your passport must not expire within six months of your arrival in a foreign country or else it won’t be considered valid for international travel. 2. Happy New Year, friends! 2024 is upon us and while many of you might be thinking about new resolutions, we’re thinking about ice cream. Sweet, sweet ice cream. Salt & Straw Why are we thinking of ice cream? Well because five ice cream flavors (Including one called Death By Chocolate Cake, might I add.) have been announced for Salt & Straw in Disney World and Disneyland. The five flavors for the month of January are all part of the returning Dairy-Free Decadence series. We hope you’re ready to eat with your eyes because we’re about to deep dive into all five flavors. ©Salt and Straw Starting things off is the returning Toasted Oat Milk and Cookies. The ice cream is made with chewy chocolate chip cookies that are dunked in silky oat milk cream and layered with an ultra-rich chocolate ganache. Toasted Oak Milk & Cookies We like the texture the chocolate chip cookies adds to this ice cream. The oat milk taste was very prominent and we weren’t too fond of the lingering taste after a few bites. The ganache is pretty overpowering as well, but if you like a rich chocolate taste, you’ll enjoy this flavor. Then there’s the also returning Red Velvet Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting. This flavor is made by tossing bits of spongy red velvet cake into a subtly sweet coconut cream that is then infused with red velvet batter. After that, they add in a tangy cream cheese frosting. ©Salt and Straw Now it’s time to chat the returning Bananas Foster with Candied Pecans flavor! It’s made with a Bananas Foster reduction with rum, brown sugar and spices, and coconut cream. And of course, more banana and candied pecans. Bananas Foster None of the flavors overpowered the others in this ice cream and it had a nice light caramel and banana taste. However, we could tell this isn’t traditional dairy ice cream. It had a distinct taste that wasn’t bad, just different from your typical ice cream. Just something to note if you don’t typically eat dairy-free ice cream! Okay, okay. So enough about the returning flavors, right?! Well, the next two options are brand NEW Salt & Straw flavors. Are ya ready for em?? The first of the new flavors is Marionberry Oatmeal Cobbler. The base is coconut milk and cinnamon mixed with a marionberry filling. Then there’s the bits of pie crust and cobbler topping swirled throughout. Uh, we’ll take 12, please! ©Salt and Straw And lastly is that dreamy flavor we mentioned when we started this post — Death By Chocolate Cake. If this is the way flavors are going to go in 2024, I think we’re in for a good year! This brand new option is made with Salt & Straw’s chocolatey upcycled barley milk base that is then paired with Dutch process cocoa, vegan chocolate cake and vegan chocolate ganache. YUM! ©Salt and Straw These flavors are all vegan and do not contain wheat. They are available in stores and for nationwide shipping NOW! Read our full review of two of these flavors here! 4. Dining at table service at Disney World restaurants is a favorite activity of many Disney guests. Be Our Guest Restaurant We have lots of favorite restaurants around Disney World, but it’s important to note that most of them require advance dining reservations. If you’re headed to Disney World in 2024, here’s why getting a reservation at those restaurants may be harder to get than before. So why will it be harder to get these dining reservations? Three words: Disney Dining Plan. Yes, this beloved perk is coming back in 2024 for Disney hotel guests, and while it’ll make budgeting for food on your trip easier for those with the Disney Dining Plan, reservations could be harder to come by — here’s why. Guests getting the Regular Disney Dining Plan will receive one quick service meal credit, one table service meal credit, and one snack credit per person, per night of their package. Now, guests on the Disney Dining Plan do have to make reservations at table service restaurants just like you do up to 60 days before your trip begins. Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant However Disney World Resort hotel guests may make reservations up to 60 days in advance plus the length of their stay up to 10 days. And since everyone with the Disney Dining Plan has to be staying at a Disney World hotel, this gives them a leg up on you if you’re NOT staying at a Disney hotel. Liberty Tree Tavern Since many guests were waiting to return to the parks until the Disney Dining Plan came back, this could mean that dining reservations for these table service restaurants are about to be more complicated. So how can you ensure you get your reservation? Here are some tips: Make your reservation right at that 60 day mark before your vacation begins If you can’t get a reservation, don’t stress too much — keep checking back on the app multiple times each day to see if a reservation will show up. Yes, even when you’re in the parks already, because last minute reservations show up all the time. It’s never a guarantee, but we have gotten last-minute reservations before! Chef Mickey’s! 6. We’re getting ready to ring in the New Year in Disney World, and things are pretty busy right now! Happy New Year! We’re getting ready to say goodbye to the holiday season and hello to 2024. We’re already diving into some special New Year’s snacks and navigating all the crowds, but let’s take a look at something else today that we bet you’ll be interested in — the price of Genie+. So we already knew that New Year’s Eve was going to be a VERY busy day in the parks. How do we know? Well, it’s New Year’s Eve! But also, we know because park pass availability for three parks, Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, and EPCOT are completely gone for the day. That means those parks are likely going to reach capacity. That’s a LOT of people, y’all. Crowds So what does that mean in terms of Genie+? Well, it means that there’s high demand for Genie+, so that means the price is going to be higher. Just how high? Well, on New Year’s Eve, the price of Genie+ is $39 for Magic Kingdom and Multiple Parks, $32 for EPCOT, $35 for Hollywood Studios, and $29 for Animal Kingdom. ©Disney The cost for Individual Lightning Lane for rides is also pretty high today — even with all ILLs but Cosmic Rewind selling out by 9:30AM : Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind: $17 Seven Dwarfs Mine Train: $12 Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance: $25 Avatar Flight of Passage: $16 TRON Lightcycle / Run: $20 TRON Lightcycle / Run With so many people in the parks, ride wait times are going to be higher, so if you can nab Genie+ and those Individual Lightning Lanes for rides that are your priorities, you’ll end up saving a lot of time. Ultimately, it’s up to you to decide if it’s worth the cost to spend less time in lines, though. We’ll be keeping an eye on things at the parks and reporting back in throughout the day, so stay tuned to DFB for more. 8. If one thing goes hand-in-hand, it’s Disney World and crowds. We could see less of this in Disney World in 2024 Now, don’t get us wrong — there are still some times during the year when we don’t see as many folks in the parks. However, over the past few years, particularly after 2021, we started seeing more and more people traveling to Disney World. It’s pretty much peaked this week, with crowds and high ride wait times that have us pretty shocked. But Disney World could be a little quieter in 2024. Okay, let’s talk about revenge travel. This term became a thing soon after COVID-19 travel restrictions started to lift. It’s basically taking a trip that hasn’t been able to happen because of the worldwide pandemic. It’s something we’ve seen in Disney World, as more people are making trips that they put off in 2020 and 2021. Crowds in Toy Story Land However, that kind of travel may be coming to an end. The Orlando Sentinel tackled the question, “Will revenge travel end in 2024?” And, well, the answers are contradictory, depending on who you ask. Airlines continue to report that travelers are willing to pay more for business-class seats. Orlando International Airport recently reported that more people are traveling through the airport this holiday season than in 2022. Some hotel executives are stating much of the same. Orlando International Airport However, other travel pros are reporting that they’re seeing a slowdown in revenge travel. Some airlines are reporting decreased demand over the past few months, which has led to airlines losing money. Southwest Airlines is even reconsidering plans to grow its flight schedule in 2024 as a result. ©Southwest Inflation and the tough economy could also be playing into a cooldown in travel. Life, in general, is a little less affordable than it was even a year ago, so travel might feel more like a splurge than anything. However, life is also relatively returning to normal. So many folks have been taking so many trips to make up for the trips they didn’t get to take in 2020 and 2021 that they’re now ready to return to their regular travel spending habits, which means a little less travel. There’s even less demand for some popular U.S. destinations. Magic Kingdom However, there are some reasons revenge travel could stick around a little longer. Many airlines are starting to lower their fares and offer more special deals to convince more people to travel. For many, better prices are reason enough to book those next trips. There’s also the consideration that many people prefer to cut back on other expenses to have the money to travel and that it’s become more of a priority now. Orlando Airport Whatever the case, we won’t know exactly how crowded Disney World might be in 2024 until we get there. But there are indications that 2024 could be a less crowded year for the resort — but don’t take our word for it because it’s hard to predict these things. Stay tuned to DFB for more! Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster We’ll be watching for updates on this ride’s closure, and we’ll let you know as soon as we find out when it’ll reopen! Kali River Rapids — Temporarily Closing on January 8th Kali River Rapids usually closes in January for refurbishment since water rides like this tend to be less popular during the winter months when it’s chilly outside. Tomorrowland Terrace Restaurant Tomorrowland Terrace is a quick service restaurant that’s remained closed since the 2020 pandemic-related closures, but even before that, this spot was only occasionally open. Tomorrowland Terrace Once in a while, you’ll see the dining rooms open as a rest area, but it’s usually all roped off and empty. Disney hasn’t announced when this spot could finally reopen, but we’ll be watching for updates! The Cheapest Hotel Room You Can Get and Still Walk to Magic Kingdom Disney’s Hollywood Studios Voyage of the Little Mermaid Well, it’s official — Voyage of the Little Mermaid is permanently closed in Disney World. We had suspected this was the case for some time (as it hasn’t actually been open for a few years now), but now the permanent closure has finally been confirmed. Voyage of the Little Mermaid Disney is going to introduce a NEW show in this spot, though it will still be themed to the animated movie The Little Mermaid! The new show will be called “The Little Mermaid — A Musical Adventure” and is coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Fall 2024. It will be a “fully reimagined theatrical production inspired by the Walt Disney Animation Studios classic.” You won’t believe who we spotted at Hollywood Studios! EPCOT Restaurant Marrakesh Restaurant Marrakesh is still closed in the Morocco pavilion of EPCOT’s World Showcase, and there’s no word yet on when it might reopen. Restaurant Marrakesh building The restaurant is kind of open right now — it’s functioning as a lounge with just a couple of drink options. However, we’re still waiting for the full restaurant to reopen! The Land Cart The Land Cart is still closed in EPCOT’s World Nature. This cart is located just outside of the Land pavilion, and it usually serves soft pretzels and drinks. The Land Cart Disney’s website shows that this cart will be closed through late February at least, but that’s just as far as the calendar extends — the closure could last longer. We’ll be on the lookout for news! We spotted a Crumbl cookie DUPE and other new treats in EPCOT! Disney World Hotels 1900 Park Fare at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort At Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort, 1900 Park Fare is a table service restaurant where you could meet characters like Mary Poppins and Alice in Wonderland at their Supercalifragilistic Breakfast and Cinderella and her Prince Charming during the Cinderella’s Happily Ever After Dinner. Dining Room at 1900 Park Fare (2019) They also had a special event for younger children called the Wonderland Tea Party. It’s sad to see a spot closed that had so much character interaction! Fuentes del Morro Pool at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort The Fuentes del Morro Pool at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort is going to be closed from January 2024 to late March 2024. 10. A recent airport incident involving Spirit Airlines has been making headlines. Orlando International Airport An unaccompanied child ended up on the wrong Spirit Airlines flight, and now, Spirit has responded. Just recently, Spirit Airlines launched an investigation into an incident involving a 6-year-old boy traveling from Philadelphia to Fort Myers to visit his grandmother. He was “incorrectly boarded” and ended up on a plane going to Orlando. Spirit Airlines at Orlando Airport According to Fox35, that investigation revealed that a gate agent in Philadelphia was responsible for the mix-up. Spirit Airlines stated that the agent escorted the boy to the wrong plane. As a result, that gate agent has been fired. “This agent is no longer working with Spirit, and any individual whose actions resulted in the incorrect boarding will be held accountable for failing to follow our procedures,” Spirit said. “We are also reiterating our procedures to the team, and we are in communication with the child’s family about this matter.” ©Spirit Airlines The grandmother, Maria Ramos, said that it was the first time the child had ever been on a plane. She waited for him at the Ft. Myers airport, but when he didn’t get off the plane, she approached a flight attendant who informed her that there were no unaccompanied children on that flight. The boy called his grandmother, and after she instructed him to find a uniformed employee, she found out that he was in Orlando rather than in Fort Myers. At the time, Spirit Airlines sent a statement to Ramos, “We are so sorry for the terrible mistake. (Casper) is a wonderful young man and was extremely polite and very social with our flight attendants and airport team. I am a grandfather myself and would only do for (Casper) as I would do for my own grandchildren. You must be very proud. Merry Christmas to you and your family.” Spirit also reportedly offered to have a driver take Casper to Fort Myers, though Maria Ramos declined according to Fox35. ©Spirit Airlines We will look out for additional updates on the situation. 12. Things are constantly changing in Disney World, and well, we know that’s the whole point. Japan Pavilion at EPCOT The year 2024 will bring on a LOT of new changes to Disney World, including the return of the Disney Dining Plan, the return of all-day park hopping, and even the end of park pass reservations for most visitors. But one Disney World restaurant is ALSO changing to mark the New Year. EPCOT’s newest restaurant is Shiki-Sai: Sushi Izakaya, and part of the restaurant’s overall theme is that it changes with the seasons, depending on celebrations being held in Japan. Well, a new celebration will be arriving at Shiki-Sai with the New Year. Shiki-Sai in the fall Starting on January 1st, those who dine at Shiki-Sai will get to participate in the New Year celebration there, which will bring the tradition of Omikuji. Omikuji are random fortunes written on strips of paper that you would traditionally get at shrines and temples in Japan. Well, you’ll be able to draw a fortune for yourself at Shiki-Sai. ©Disney via Instagram The restaurant will also have new activities and decorations to go along with the new celebration. That’s part of the fun of Shiki-Sai because it changes throughout the year and is a great way to eat authentic Japanese food while learning more about Japanese culture. ©Disney via Instagram So now is a great time to visit Shiki-Sai, and, hey, if you want to indulge in a $300 sushi boat, we won’t judge you! 13. Are you as obsessed with Disney history as we are? Bus transportation at Disney World Yes, we’ve listened to a ton of Disney history podcasts, and we’ve OBVIOUSLY watched Behind The Attraction on Disney+… MULTIPLE times. We made sure we enjoyed the special Christmas with Walt Disney film, too. Disney transportation has a rich history that we’re fascinated with, and now we can see Disney transportation history IN ACTION on New Year’s Day. There’s an attraction in Magic Kingdom that most visitors walk right by. Some people may not have noticed it at all. But it’s the Omnibus that runs down Main Street, U.S.A., and YES, you can ride the double-decker bus. Next time you find yourself in Magic Kingdom, you should TOTALLY hop on. Omnibus in Magic Kingdom The Omnibus has been around since 1956. It was originally designed by Disney Legend Bob Gurr, who also had a hand in designing some of Disney’s most iconic ride transportation systems, including the Doom Buggies for Haunted Mansion. Well, you can now see one of the older Omnibuses in a special event that’s happening on January 1st. Believe it or not, there used to be a World Showcase Omnibus that would take you around the world in EPCOT (and considering how long that walk is, we think this Omnibus needs to make a comeback). ©Bob Gurr via Instagram If you plan on watching the 2024 Tournament of Roses parade on January 1st, you can see this Omnibus in action. Riding on the Omnibus will be the President of The Tournament of Roses, Alex Aghajanian, and his family. ©Bob Gurr via Instagram You can watch the parade live on ABC and NBC, as well as stream it live on the Roku Channel, Amazon Freevee and Prime Video, LG Channels, Sling FreeStream, Christmas Plus App, PlutoTV, and YouTube. The parade begins at 12PM, 10AM CST, and 9AM EST. This is the third Rose Parade to feature a Disney vehicle designed by Gurr. The others were the Disneyland Mouseorail and the Disneyland Fire Engine. 14. When you visit Disney World, do you also visit the water parks? Let’s go to Blizzard Beach! As you may know, Disney World has two water parks, Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach. Over the past three years, though, we’ve never seen both open at the same time: if one is open, the other is usually closed. Right now, Blizzard Beach is open, but we’re seeing something on the Disney World calendar that makes us wonder if it’s closing again soon. Now, Blizzard Beach has closed temporarily recently due to weather, which does happen with the water parks from time to time. However, when we look at Disney World’s calendar, we’re noticing that Blizzard Beach isn’t showing any operating hours for dates after January 27th. It seems a little early for Disney to close the park due to the weather forecast, after all. ©Disney Disney hasn’t stated why Blizzard Beach isn’t listing hours after that date, especially as the calendar shows operating hours past that date at Disney World’s other parks. It could be that Blizzard Beach is closing for refurbishment, but the other water park, Typhoon Lagoon, typically opens when that happens. When we checked the calendar, though, Typhoon Lagoon is also not showing hours. ©Disney Now, there is no guarantee that both parks will be closed on or after that date, and this could be just a case of Disney not having released the hours for the water parks yet. We’ll be keeping an eye on it, though, so you know what’s going on. When are you headed to Disney World next? Have you checked out our line of fun graphic tees to wear on your trip? 15. Although things usually quiet down a little in Disney World in January, this upcoming January could be a little different. Hope you don’t want to see this on January 6th That’s because a lot of things are RETURNING to Disney World for the first time since 2020 on January 9th. Park pass reservations are going to be a thing of the past for almost all visitors. The Disney Dining Plan is coming back. All-day park hopping is returning. But something interesting is happening before that. The Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend kicks off on January 4th and ends on January 7th. So we already know that could be a very busy time at the resort. But just how busy? Well, we were checking park pass reservations (which don’t end until a few days AFTER the marathon) and they’re completely sold out on January 6th for Magic Kingdom. ©Disney If you’re a Disney World Annual Passholder, you’ll notice that Magic Kingdom has no park pass reservations for both January 5th AND 6th. ©Disney This tells us a few things. First, if you had plans to go to Magic Kingdom on January 6th, but did NOT make a park pass reservation, you can’t visit that park. Second, if you did manage to score a park pass reservation for Magic Kingdom on that date, you’ll want to prepare for crowds on that day. This means you might want to consider purchasing Genie+ to avoid long ride lines. Expect a busy January 6th in Magic Kingdom We’ll be interested in seeing how crowds and capacity are handled on January 9th and after when park pass reservations are no longer required for Disney World visitors with a date-based ticket. We’ll be keeping an eye on EVERYTHING in Disney World, though, so stay tuned to DFB for more. When are you headed to Disney World next? 16. Sometimes we question whether or not we should skip the Disney trip and do something else for our next vacation. Mickey and Pals at Cinderella Castle The beach, the mountains, a non-Disney cruise… they’re all options. When we picture that, though, we just have this heartbreaking image of Mickey being really sad. Plus, there’s something that just keeps pulling us back to the Most Magical Place on Earth. It could be the rides, the food, the entertainment, or a mix of all three. But, let’s be super honest with ourselves, here. It’s mostly the food. There were three different occasions this week that involved food where we found ourselves thinking, “Yup. This is what it’s all about. This is my happy place.” It reminded us once again that A.) nobody does food like Disney, and B.) we have the best job EVAAAAA. Here are three new treats that popped up this week that had us celebrating. CROISSANT BEIGNETS !!! Chef Mickey’s at Disney’s Contemporary Resort is a fan-favorite character buffet that used to serve up waffles and French toast. Now, you can get waffles, French toast, AND seasonal pancakes. And… CROISSANT BEIGNETS! Chef Mickey’s Yep, these bad boys will now be available on the Chef Mickey’s buffet. The food here hasn’t been our favorite thing ever in the past, but it’s clear that they’re starting to step up their game. See what else is new at Disney World Hotels A Crumbl Cookie Dupe At Sunshine Seasons in EPCOT, you’ll find all sorts of cookies. The other day, though, we spotted one that looked awful familiar… It looks just like a Crumbl Cookie! Birthday Cake Cookie (behind the chocolate chip) It’s the $3.99 Birthday Cake Cookie! We’re thinking we might have to go and see if it TASTES like Crumbl too… Click here to see what else is new at EPCOT An Adult Capri Sun Over at Mardi Grogs Pool Bar at Disney’s Port Orleans Resort — French Quarter, you’ll find the Bull Frog Brew! This sour but delicious drink is made of Minute Maid® Premium Lemonade, Green Apple, and Kiwi and costs $5.49! Bull Frog Brew It tastes just like a sour Capri Sun, and it’s totally zero proof. So, don’t hand this one to your kids, because you might not get it back. See what else is new at Disney World Hotels Yum, yum, and YUM. 17. If you’ve been to Disney World, you know that sometimes the unexpected happens. Rise of the Resistance First, the weather is notoriously unpredictable. It could be raining one minute and all sunshine and hot the next. Then there are the ride closures. Some are planned (mostly for refurbishments), but sometimes rides just go down for whatever reason. Well, that’s happening today, December 30th, and it’s happening to some of Disney World’s most popular rides. At one point today, five of Disney World’s most popular rides were closed…at the same time. In Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Expedition Everest was closed. In EPCOT, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind and Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure were closed. In Magic Kingdom, Pirates of the Caribbean was closed. In Disney’s Hollywood Studios, it was Rise of the Resistance (okay, probably not a HUGE surprise there). Later, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure re-opened, but the rest of those attractions remained closed. Not only that, but December 30th is shaping up to be one of the BUSIEST days of the year in Disney World! The Seven Dwarfs Mine Train reached a 200-minute wait, while Peter Pan’s Flight hit 160 minutes. Additionally, Genie+ (which was at its record-high price for the year) sold out for multiple parks, including Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Seven Dwarfs Mine Train So, if you’re in Disney World, what should you do when multiple big closures like this happen? Well, the first thing is to look for something else to ride. There really is no other option, but you will want to keep an eye on the My Disney Experience app to see when rides reopen, especially if they’re a priority. Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure If you’ve purchased Genie+, you’ll automatically get a multi-experience redemption pass that’s good for several other rides. Note that if you’re already in a ride’s Lightning Lane and have scanned in, you’ll need to go to Guest Relations to get the multi-experience pass. If you ever have questions or concerns, you can always talk with a Cast Member in Guest Relations. Lightning Lane sign for Tower of Terror in Disney’s Hollywood Studios If you’ve paid for an Individual Lightning Lane for a ride, you’ll get an “experience redemption,” which acts as a boarding pass to ride that attraction when it reopens on that same day. If, for some reason, the ride does not reopen, you qualify for a refund, but you’ll have to go to Guest Relations to request it. However, you can only get the refund if the ride does not reopen or Disney announces it will be closed for the rest of the day. Flight of Passage Queue It isn’t exactly ideal when multiple rides go down like this, but knowing your options could keep these kinds of closures from ruining your day. We always recommend being flexible because sometimes these things just happen, even at the busiest time of the year. Stay tuned to DFB for more. Whew. 18. The holiday season is wrapping up in Disney World, and you know what that means. The holidays in Disney’s Animal Kingdom It means we’re already looking forward to 2024. We’ve already seen 2024 merchandise in the parks and online, and we are ready for what 2024 will bring, including LOADS of changes. But now is also the time for special New Year’s 2024 snacks — we tried our first recently, but we just discovered MORE 2024 snacks. Come with us to try them out! The New Year’s 2024 Cupcake is BACK in Animal Kingdom. It’s a chocolate cupcake with cherry filling, almond frosting, chocolate crispy pearls, and a chocolate 2024 decoration. We’ve absolutely LOVED this treat in the past, so how does the NEWEST version stand up? New Year’s 2024 Cupcake So you’ve got what is essentially a chocolate explosion with a hint of cherry flavor AND edible flavor, which SCREAMS New Year’s to us. This cupcake is SO fresh that you might have a bit of a crumbly situation on your hands, but it’s SO good. The buttercream icing is super thick and creamy, but we’ll warn you that because it’s served straight out of the fridge, you’ll want to let it sit for a few minutes before biting into it. It’s so photogenic The thing that continues to sell us on this cupcake, though, is the cherry flavor, which adds both a sweet and sour component to the flavor. Our biggest complaint this year, though, is that we want MORE of that filling — we think they skimped a little on it this year compared to last year’s cupcake. That filling is EVERYTHING This is one of the freshest cupcakes you’ll find in Disney World (maybe it helps that it’s refrigerated). But you need to love chocolate to truly appreciate it. Grab it now at Pizzafari and Restaurantosaurus for $6.29. Now for the sad news: you’ll only be able to get this treat through January 2nd, so you’ll have to hurry. Are we a little upset that this treat won’t stick around longer? Yes. Yes, we are. WE KNOW – there are SO many great snacks at Disney World! How do you choose (we don’t want to choose but will blow our budget on Day 1 otherwise)? We’ve got you covered! 21. In December 2023, we heard that Disney was permanently closing the Voyage of the Little Mermaid at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Voyage of the Little Mermaid We haven’t seen the show performed since 2020 when the parks closed due to the pandemic. Since then, we have been waiting with bated breath for it to reopen. However, Disney announced that the show was going to be closing permanently to make way for something brand new — “The Little Mermaid — A Musical Adventure”. Disney’s Live Entertainment team has been working on the show for over a year now, so consider this our open letter to them about what we would like to see in the new show. While we’re excited for this show to be brought to life, we can’t help but think back to the original show. We look back on those memories with love, but we can think of a large list of things we would like to see improved or added to the newest version of the show — which is set to debut in late 2024. Ariel in Disney World Better Effects We get it, the original show opened in 1992. We know that the expectations of practical effects are a lot higher now than it was back then — which is why it is the top thing on our list. Not only do we look at those memories with love, but we also look back at them and smell the fog effects that the show used to have. Not only that, but we can also remember choking on it and coughing for what felt like days (that is dramatic, but you get it). We’re hoping to see some improved fog effects if they’re planning on incorporating those into the show — and we also hope that we don’t remember them this way 20 years from now. Voyage of the Little Mermaid billboard Now that we’ve cleared up our feelings on the fog, let’s talk about the lighting. In the old show, Disney utilized lazers and lights to simulate waves on the sides of the room during the fight with Ursula scene, and we wished they worked a little better. With today’s technology, we’re hoping that they can bring that back in an improved way. Let’s go for a swim! Something that isn’t as pressing (but we really want to see) is the rain effect working more consistently if they bring it back. We don’t need a downpour — we can go outside for that. However, we remember it from the original and remember wanting it to be more consistent… so we had to mention it. The Size of Max We love Max! He is such an adorable part of the film. However, in the original show, he was… larger… than we expected. Under The Sea – Journey of the Little Mermaid at Magic Kingdom! Honestly, he was the size of a human, and it was mildly offputting. If he is involved with the show at all, we’re hoping to see him at a size that is less jarring and unrealistic. We’ve seen that Disney has the technology to do it based off of things built for the Zootopia Land at Shanghai Disneyland, so we are hoping they can bring a little bit of that technology over to us in Orlando. Better Transitions We don’t know about you, but we remember some interesting transitions taking place in the original show. Under the Sea – Journey of the Little Mermaid at Magic Kingdom! The first one that comes to mind is the transition Ariel makes when she is turning into a human. We know that it is a hard transition to do live, but we feel like they can do better than Ariel standing up from a stationary tail. We’re not expecting anything groundbreaking here, but we think some changes to this integral moment would be really cool to see. The Pre-show Area We know they’re retheming the show, but getting the queue and holding area rethemed would be the icing on top of the cake. Voyage of The Little Mermaid Queue with Social Distancing Markers The old holding area gave us 20,000 leagues under the sea vibes — and that just is not what the little mermaid needs. So, we’re hoping that this area gets some love too — how cool would it be if they themed it to Ariel’s Secret Grotto, the place she stored all of her gadgets, gizmos, whoosits, whatsits, and thingamabobs. Adding Music from The Broadway Production Since a big part of this show is music, we’re hoping to see some songs from the Broadway production of The Little Mermaid. We already know about some musical numbers we can expect, like “Part of Your World,” “Poor Unfortunate Souls,” and “Kiss the Girl,” but we’re hoping that we can get something from the Broadway musical to change it up a little bit. We know it isn’t likely, but we can dream. Voyage of The Little Mermaid We know that all of our wishes won’t come true, but we’re hoping that these are some of the changes we will find once the show opens in late 2024. We’re keeping our eyes out for updates about this show, so we’ll be sure to update you as we find out some new information! Keep checking in with us to see what we find next! 7 TERRIBLE Things We Recommend in Disney World What are you hoping to see in the new show? Let us know in the comments below! 22. We had a feeling that several Disney rides would be closing in 2024. Haunted Mansion While a few attractions could be closing forever this coming year, several are just temporarily shutting down for refurbishments. Disney will do this every now and then to maintain the rides and ensure they continue to work properly. Some rides notoriously close around the same time each year, while others close more spontaneously. Since January is just right around the corner, we thought we would share with you which rides you can expect to be closing in the coming month! Both coasts (Disney World and Disneyland Resort) will have several rides closing in the first month of the year. So let’s take a look at what you can expect if you’re headed to Disney in January! Disney World Hollywood Studios On January 8th, you can expect to temporarily say goodbye to one of the thrill rides in Hollywood Studios. Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster will be closing for refurbishment that day. Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster According to Disney’s website, the roller coaster will be closed until the Summer of 2024. It also states it’s for routine refurbishment, there is no indication of the ride changing or being re-themed. While we’ll be limited by one less thrill ride in Hollywood Studios, we will have it back in 2024! ©Disney Animal Kingdom Also, on January 8th, Kali River Rapids stops showing open times. The ride is not currently listed under the refurbishments, but since we can’t see that it will be open, there’s a good chance we won’t be able to ride this water ride after January 8th. ©Disney The calendar only goes out to February 28th on the day that we wrote this, and the ride doesn’t show any opening times through then. We’re unsure at this time when the water ride in Animal Kingdom will reopen for riders. This is a pretty common time for Kali River Rapids to close for refurbishment, though, so we’re confident we’ll see it reopen sometime soon. Magic Kingdom Another ride not listed on the refurbishment list but which stops showing times is Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. On January 16th, we no longer see open times for the fast-paced train. ©Diseney Luckily, we do see times for the ride again on January 21st! So it looks like this will just be a short closure. However, it is one of our favorite rides, so any amount of time that we don’t get to ride it makes us very sad. Now, let’s head over to the West Coast, to Disneyland! Disneyland Resort Disney California Adventure Disney California Adventure will see two rides close in January. First, on January 8th, Grizzly River Run will be closing for refurbishment. ©Disney We’re unsure when this ride will reopen. There are no open dates for it through February 11th, which is as far out as we can see, currently. The ride is listed as a refurbishment, but Disney did not say when it will reopen. We’ll be on the lookout for it to be up and running, again! Also closing in California Adventure is Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind. This is listed to close for refurbishment on January 22nd. ©Disney Luckily, we see our ride of emotions showing open times again on February 8th! So we shouldn’t have to wait too long to become one with our emotions, again. ©Disney Disneyland Park Alright, on to the original Disney park! Two rides will also be closing in Disneyland in January. First on the list is “it’s a small world,” also closing on January 8th. ©Disney “it’s a small world” shows up on the list of refurbishments on January 8th and is no longer there on January 19th. However, the ride’s website continues to not show opening times past that date and into February. So we’re not sure when this slow-moving boat ride will actually be reopening. “it’s a small world” Next up, and last on the list of January closures, is Haunted Mansion. We’ll see Haunted Mansion close in Disneyland on January 22nd. ©Disney Disney confirmed that the ride will close on January 22nd to begin working on the expanded outdoor queue as part of the Haunted Mansion expansion. January 21st is also the last day of the season to ride on the Haunted Mansion Holiday overlay. Haunted Mansion Holiday Reminder! These previous rides are the ones that will be closing in January. However, there are a couple in Disneyland that are already closed and will continue to be throughout January. Those include the Mark Twain Riverboat and Astro Orbitor! ©Disney Be sure to check the Disneyland and Disney World apps on your trip to check for any temporary closures on the day of your visit! Rides will occasionally go down throughout the day, so save yourself some steps by checking the apps. For more Disney news, keep following DFB! 25. Let’s face it, sometimes tackling some of the major stuff you want to do at Disney World requires a game plan. That’s where we can help. Drink up! Whether it be traveling advice or tips on what to do (or not do) when you’re at Disney World, here at DFB, we’re here to help make your next Disney World vacation as easy as possible. We even have tips on how to get into that super popular Disney bar/lounge you’ve always wanted to try! Getting into Disney World’s most popular bars and lounges can be a tough task at times, regardless of whether that bar is in a hotel, inside a Disney Park, or over at Disney Springs. Still, we know a few secrets you can use if you’re looking to grab that elusive seating! Check the Calendar ©Disney Despite what you may think, Disney World events that draw crowds don’t always result in busy bars and lounges. We recommend checking the Disney World calendar and circling a few dates if you’re looking for the BEST times to visit a popular bar or lounge. These special days include after-hours events, parties, or other nighttime events. Instead of crowding the bars, guests will be in the parks, giving you some of the best opportunities to either grab a dining reservation or simply walk up. Another tip that falls in line with this piece of advice is to visit during runDisney events. Trader Sam’s Grotto over at Disney’s Polynesian Resort is usually pretty busy but nights before races are fairly easygoing. Go At Opening Nomad Lounge Not a day drinker? Perhaps you should reconsider. Sometimes your best opportunity to get into a bar or lounge is when it opens. For example, Nomad Lounge at Animal Kingdom is a popular lounge that has laid-back vibes, refreshing hand-crafted cocktails, and tasty lounge bites all served in a travel-themed bar. Sounds good, right? Well, other bar-goers agree and this place gets pretty busy while not offering advanced dining reservations. In cases like Nomad Lounge, we recommend rope-dropping and joining the walk-up list when the lounge opens either in person or on the My Disney Experience app. Try To Avoid Weekends Hollywood Studios Crowds This piece of advice is simple — weekends generally bring in larger crowds at Disney World. It’s not just the bars and lounges that will be more filled, as everywhere you go will likely have big lines and longer waits. If you want the path with the least resistance, we recommend doing your bar-going midweek, if possible, to avoid the weekend rush. Use Waitlists It wasn’t a long wait at all! We already touched on this but it can’t be overstated — waitlists can seriously come in handy. They can not only give you situational clarity, but they are oftentimes your best chance at getting into a bar or restaurant. They can be joined in person or conveniently on the My Disney Experience app, which allows you to save a place in line without having to physically be in a line. Be Willing To Split Up Into Smaller Groups If Your Party Is Large Oga’s Cantina A reality about dining in general is that the smaller the party, the better chance you have to be seated. While not ideal in some circumstances, this principle must be kept in mind if you’re trying to get into a must-visit restaurant or lounge. This is especially true if you don’t have a reservation and are trying to get walk-up seating. If you have a large group (let’s say 6+ for example), the more willing you are to break off into pairs or groups of three or four, the more likely you are to be seated. Show Up On Time If You’re On A Waitlist White Rabbit This one is pretty self-explanatory. Show up to your waitlist window ON TIME. You will generally be given a short window once your time is allocated so don’t wander too far off from the bar or lounge, as they will have no problem giving your time away to the next guest(s). You should also keep in mind that sometimes you may sign up for a long wait but get called in much sooner than you anticipated. When in doubt stay within 5-7 minutes walking distance of your waitlisted restaurant. Be Prepared To Barhop Wine Bar George Sometimes no matter what you do, it can be insanely difficult to get into that bar or lounge you’ve been dying to visit. Instead of getting sad, we suggest barhopping to a different bar! Disney World offers a plethora of great bars and lounges all over the resort that are guaranteed to scratch your bar itch. In fact, making a point to bar crawl can be a seriously fun time! For all things bars and lounges in Disney World, check out our guide below!
