  2. When you’re in Disney World, it gets HOT, and that also means you can get miserable pretty quick. Magic Kingdom Staying hydrated and staying cool the best you can is a great way to attempt to avoid overheating and becoming crabby, and sometimes you need the help of a cooling tool to do that. Sometimes people prefer cooling towels, and others prefer mini fans, but is this new cooling tool about to take over? We decided to try it out to see! DISCLOSURE: This post may contain affiliate links, meaning when you click the links and make a purchase, we receive a commission. A New Way to Keep Yourself Cool! Neck Cooling Tube The Neck Cooling Tube is the newest item online to help keep you cool during the summer, but we were curious to see if it was really worth the $15 it usually costs. The best way to use this is to put it in the freezer and allow it to solidify completely, then allow it to cool you throughout the day. We would say this is worth the money, as it’s nice and lightweight, not to mention it lays right on your pulse point, so it kept us cooler than a cooling towel or handheld fan did. Around our neck Now, we didn’t have a freezer with us all day, and we couldn’t put it in the fridge either, so instead we put it in a cup of ice water, which worked decently well. Our only complaint is that since it couldn’t firm up completely, it didn’t last as long as a cooling towel or fan usually does. Now, that could be different based on if we had been able to put it in the freezer to begin with, but we liked it enough to continue experimenting with it, and it’s good to know a cup of ice water can work in a pinch. Putting it in ice water It definitely kept us cool, and we think if you were to use it in conjunction with a cooling towel or fan, it’ll work especially well! Check it out right here! We’re here to help keep you cool in the summer, so be sure to stay tuned to DFB for all our latest Disney tips, tricks, and more! 3. I hope you’re hungry and ready to celebrate because Plaza de la Familia is back at Disney California Adventure park. From August 22 through November 2, 2025, join in on the Spirit of Día de los Muertos. There’s so much to enjoy throughout the celebration this year! Well, I personally can’t wait to get a peek at what’s cooking for Plaza de la Familia. What about you? 4. We’re not going to lie: Disneyland has some of our favorite Disney food ANYWHERE. And we’re just not talking about the churros, Mickey-shaped beignets, corn dogs, and cheesy garlic pretzel bread (we could go on and on about our favorite Disneyland snacks). Cocina Cucamonga Mexican Grill spread Disneyland also has some solid quick service restaurants, too, where you can get a good meal quickly. So we’re heading over to Disney California Adventure to visit Cocina Cucamonga Mexican Grill to try out some eats, and we’re bringing you along with us. Atmosphere You’ll find Cocina Cucamonga in San Fransoky0 Square in an area that feels more like a market than a food court (but there are several good quick-service dining spots here. Cocina Cucamonga The restaurant itself is just an outdoor covered walk-up counter where you’ll place your order and then pick it up at a window. Note that Mobile Order is also available here. Cocina Cucamonga This restaurant is part of a massive area with PLENTY of seating, but you may still need to walk around a bit to find a spot because this area is also usually a bit crowded. But enough about the restaurant — what’s on the menu here?! Menu The menu here is all about street-style tacos and corn, including QuesaBirria, Carne Asada, and San Fransokyo-style Street Corn, which adds an Asian twist to elote. Menu You can also find some seasonal and special items here from time to time, including special drinks and desserts. Seasonal selections And now, onto the main event — the food! Eats First up, we grabbed the QuesaBirria, or braised beef and cheese tacos with tomatillo salsa and consomé. For $12.49, you get two tacos with some slices of lime and radishes on the side (yes, radishes…and yes, they go GREAT with these tacos). Now, we’re just going to tell you that we get these tacos even when we’re visiting the parks for fun and not reviewing food, so this is a DFB go-to meal. They never disappoint. QuesaBirria You get lots of tender juicy meat with a beautiful flavor, crisply taco shells, and melted cheese inside and OUTSIDE the shell (the more cheese, the better, right?). So these are beautifully cheesy and meaty. The consomé adds even more beefy flavor, so you’ll want to just dip those tacos right in it. Our only complaint? These can be pretty greasy, so they can get kinda’ messy, too. Tender and beautifully flavored meat We also tried a menu item that’s new to us: the Tacos Dorados de Papa, which is the plant-based offering here. You get two crispy potato tacos topped with cabbage slaw, dairy-free crema, and tomatillo salsa for $10.99. So we’ll just let you know that these are kinda’ bland. Most of the flavor comes from the dairy-free crema, which is fresh and creamy and tastes like regular crema. But that’s it. Tacos Dorados de Papa The cabbage slaw adds crunch but not flavor. The potato tacos themselves also didn’t have much going for them and could’ve benefited from something like a seasoning. This was like eating a baked potato, except a baked potato without anything added to it. Not a lot of flavor One of the season items is the Ube Cake Flan, an ube cake and vanilla flan for $7.49. Now, our reporter doesn’t necessarily like ube flavors, but it worked with this dessert. The main flavor comes from the vanilla flan, which is the bulk of the treat. The cake is rich and sweet and has a spongy, moist texture. Ube Cake Flan The ube adds a hint of earthy flavor, but the sweetness balances it out. DELICIOUS If you’re looking for a dessert at Cocina Cucamonga, we highly recommend this one! Drinks To drink, we picked up the Cucumber Chia Agua Fresca, which is a Cucumber-Chia Lime Agua Fresca for $6.99. This drink is SO refreshing and has fantastic subtle flavors. You mostly get the light cucumber flavor, but the hints of lime and mint add in a little flavor with each sip. Cucumber Chia Agua Fresca This would be our pick over soda because it’s lighter and more refreshing, especially during these hot summer months. You can also get this with tequila for $17. Nosh or Not This Disney World restaurant is a must-visit if… You’re looking for a quick meal. If you’re hungry and want food ASAP, you can get in and out of here pretty quickly, and even faster with Mobile Order. You like Mexican food. If you like Mexican food, this is a great spot to get those flavors. You want something a little different from typical Mexican restaurant fare. You’ll find some flavors here that mix the heavily Asian-inspired San Fransokyo Square theme with traditional Mexican food. You should skip this Disney World spot if… You want to find a spot to quickly sit and eat. We’ve eaten here a few times, and it’s not always easy to find seating in this very busy area, especially if you’re with a group. You want a table service meal. This is a quick service restaurant, so you’re not going to get a table service experience here. You’ll order your food, pick it up, and seat yourself. You don’t like spicy food. The food here isn’t TOO spicy, but if you’re averse to spicy food, it still might be a bit much. Overall Like we previously said, this is one of our go-to spots when we need a quick meal in California Adventure. The QuesaBirria has never disappointed us, and if you’re looking for something akin to street tacos, this is where to get it. We also really liked the seasonal dessert, which was a nice twist on traditional flan. Seating can sometimes be challenging on busy days, particularly if you’re with a group, but the best strategy is to find a seat first and then mobile order your food. In the meantime, we’ll be on the lookout for more restaurant updates from Disney World and beyond. Make sure you stay tuned to the Disney Food Blog for the latest Disney news and more! 5. We can’t believe we’re even saying this, but the TSA is pleading with people to please “stop hiding animals in weird places on your body” after a woman was caught trying to smuggle two turtles in her bra. via @tsa on Instagram In a social media post, TSA shared that a woman attempted to “take a pair of twin snappers” with her through airport security, and sadly, one of the turtles did not survive. The Transportation and Security Administration is once again requesting that people stop attempting to smuggle animals through airport security. According to the post, a Florida woman was attempting to go through airport security at Miami International Airport when she was stopped for having two snapping turtles hidden in her bra. via @tsa on Instagram One of the turtles was wrapped in what appeared to be medical tape, while the other looked like it was wrapped in plastic cling wrap. TSA reported that one of the turtles did not survive. The surviving turtle was turned over to the Florida Department of Fish and Wildlife. via @tsa on Instagram A TSA spokesperson told People that the incident happened in April. After Advanced Imaging Technology alerted agents to the woman’s chest, “the passenger removed two live turtles from the alarming area.” As wild as it might seem, this isn’t the first time something like this has happened. via @tsa on Instagram Back in March, a man was caught trying to smuggle a turtle through security at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey. So, it’s clear why the TSA feels the need to plead with people to please not do this! via TSA We’ll be on the lookout for additional travel news and updates you might need to know about. And, please, don’t try to smuggle any animals in weird places on your body through the airport. Or like, ever. That’s probably for the best. 7. Disney World is full of surprises — but some are better when they stay quiet. American Adventure One of the most unexpected and magical moments can happen right in the middle of EPCOT, at the American Adventure Pavilion. If you’re lucky, you might stumble upon something truly special — but there’s one thing you absolutely need to know if it happens. This isn’t in the guidebooks, and it’s not on the app… but it could be the highlight of your day if you play it right. When Character Palooza Happens… Don’t Blow It Here’s the deal — Character Paloozas are a thing, but they’re not scheduled, advertised, or guaranteed. They’re super rare pop-up meet-and-greets that usually happen when characters are wrapping up training or need to get a little “practice” in front of guests. In EPCOT, one of the key spots these can show up is the American Adventure Pavilion. American Adventure Pavilion You won’t see it coming. There’s no big announcement. One minute the courtyard is just another quiet spot to take a break, and the next minute Mickey, Goofy, or even a random character from deep in the Disney vault is just there. No long line. No handler making an announcement. Just a sudden burst of magic — and for those in the know, it’s a major score. Character Palooza But here’s the unspoken rule: if you spot it happening, go immediately and keep it quiet. Shh! It’s a SECRET! Seriously, this is one of those situations where saying something might ruin it. These character appearances only work because the crowds stay small and manageable. Once it starts to get chaotic — and it can get chaotic fast — Cast Members will shut it down. That’s it. Characters head backstage. Magic over. You never know who you might meet! We know, the instinct to text your group or yell across the courtyard is strong. You’re excited. You want everyone to know. But if you can stay cool and just head over quietly, you’ll have the rare chance to meet characters with no wait, no Lightning Lane, and no stress. Mr. Smee! And if you keep your voice down and stay chill, it’s more likely to keep going longer — which means more people get a chance without the whole thing imploding. Why It’s a Big Deal You might be wondering, “Okay, but what’s the big deal? I can meet Mickey and Friends over at World Celebration.” Sure — but that’s not what this is. Character Palooza is like a secret menu of characters. You might see ones that never do formal meet-and-greets in the parks. It could be classic Disney animation characters, it could be rare Marvel characters (it happens), or it could just be someone iconic you weren’t expecting in that space at all. Gideon! Because these are unscheduled, they feel real. There’s no big lighting rig, no PhotoPass setup, no massive crowd of people elbowing for position. It feels like the characters just wandered into the real world for a minute. It’s spontaneous and weirdly authentic — and that’s what makes it such a gem. Better watch out for their growing noses! But again… only if the crowd doesn’t get too big. How to Spot It and What to Do There’s no notification in My Disney Experience. There’s no loudspeaker announcement. Usually, you’ll notice a small group gathering in the area between the stage and the Pavilion building. Maybe someone you didn’t expect walks out with a Cast Member. Maybe you catch a glimpse of Donald or Mulan chatting casually with guests. Hi Pooh and Tigger! If you see that, stop what you’re doing and walk over. Don’t assume it’ll still be happening in ten minutes. Don’t try to finish your funnel cake first. These things are fast and fleeting. Hi Wendell! And once you’re there, be kind, be respectful, take your moment — and try not to shout about it. Let other people discover it the same way you did. If we all play it cool, there’s a better chance the experience sticks around for a bit. What Not to Do Don’t yell across World Showcase that “MICKEY’S OVER HERE!” Don’t post it immediately to your Instagram story and tag the location while you’re still standing there. Don’t try to form your own line or direct traffic. Mr. Penguin Just go with the flow. Let the Cast Members handle the crowd. And enjoy the moment — because if you’re witnessing a Character Palooza, you’re in the right place at the right time. Bottom Line If you stumble on a Character Palooza at the American Adventure Pavilion, congrats — you found one of EPCOT’s rarest and most delightful hidden gems. Just remember the unspoken rule: go immediately and keep it quiet. The magic only lasts as long as the crowd stays manageable. And hey, you didn’t hear it from us. It is currently unknown whether anyone was on the buses at the time of the fire or if there were any injuries. 10. As it turns out, you may be leaving behind MORE than just a few hundred dollars and all of your energy after a long day at the Disney Parks… Magic Kingdom Lost and Found After spending hours at the parks, the first thing you’ll want to do is catch a ride back to your hotel if you’re visiting from out of town without a car. Disney World offers tons of free transportation options, but if you’re looking for something more intimate and maybe quicker (dealing with no lines), you may opt for a rideshare service. Unfortunately, the rideshare service Uber says Disney World tourists who use their service are making a crucial mistake. According to its 2025 Lost and Found Index, Uber listed the top 50 most unique lost items in their cars (such as DNA testing kits, chainsaws, and 10 live lobsters), as well as the 10 most forgotten items (such as wallets, keys, and water bottles) and the top 10 most forgetful cities. While Miami was the only city to crack the top 10, Disney World was home to a very concerning trend. UberXL example According to Uber: “From Minnie ears to Simba stuffed animals, Disney fans have been leaving behind their most treasured park merch. It’s a small world after all—but a big heartbreak when your Disney magic takes a detour.” Rideshare sign at EPCOT It’s honestly not too surprising. If you aren’t exhausted after a long Disney day, consider yourself one of the lucky few. We can become careless while fatigued — and that includes leaving items in strangers’ cars. Uber at EPCOT So what’s the remedy? A Disney World vacation isn’t cheap, and neither are those special souvenirs you picked up at the park. Therefore, the first step is to do everything you can to treat these gifts like rare gold. That means taking inventory before you enter the vehicle, while you’re in the vehicle, and right before you exit the vehicle — a mental checklist, if you will. It’s also a great idea to hold on tight to your souvenirs during your ride. Churro Minnie Ears But hey — accidents happen. If you lost an item during an Uber trip, there are ways to get it back! Uber detailed an 8-step process for recovering your missing souvenir, and it’s as follows: Open the Uber app and tap “Activity” on the bottom icon menu Select the trip on which you lost the item Scroll down to “Find lost item” in the Help section, and then select “Contact driver about a lost item” Select the item you lost from the options listed, and where you think the item might be in the vehicle Enter your phone number to call the driver If you can reach the driver and they confirm that your item has been found, you can mutually coordinate a time and place to meet up and get it returned If your driver doesn’t answer, leave a voicemail describing your item and the best way to contact you If you forgot your registered phone, you can sign in online to help.uber.com to receive assistance ©Uber Have you ever lost an item during a rideshare trip? 11. Disney has been announcing new lands, attractions, and entertainment headed to the theme parks, and we can’t WAIT. Magic Kingdom Keeping up with the latest construction permits Disney World files can be a great way to find out just what is going on around the parks and hotels. Recently, Tom Sawyer Island permanently closed to make way for the NEW Piston Peak National Park — a Cars-themed land coming to Magic Kingdom. And now, a new permit has been filed for this transformation! We’re always on the hunt for the latest construction permits filed by Disney to get an idea of what sort of changes might be coming to the parks, and a new permit was recently filed to get rid of an iconic part of Tom Sawyer Island. Aunt Polly’s on Tom Sawyer Island Walt Disney Imagineering has filed a new construction permit for Aunt Polly’s on Tom Sawyer Island. This quick-service snack spot had not been operating for quite some time, but now it seems Disney is preparing to finally say goodbye once and for all. The contractor listed on the permit is Phillips & Jordan, Inc., and the description is for “General Construction,” but this is just another sign that work is continuing on this area that will ultimately be demolished. @ArcGIS Disney wasted no time putting up construction walls along the Rivers of America that stretch from Big Thunder Mountain Railroad all the way to the Haunted Mansion. Construction for Tom Sawyer Island While we aren’t personally thrilled that these walls are most likely here for the next few years, we are excited about Piston Peak! The new area will bring two brand new attractions, a new character, shopping, and more. Disney has given us some good insights into what to expect when the new area finally opens. Piston Peak ©Disney The upcoming area is inspired by National Parks, and specifically, Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. The name of Piston Peak stems from the fictional land, Piston Peak National Park, from the 2014 Disney film Planes: Fire & Rescue (which is part of the Cars universe). We can’t wait to learn more! Coming Coming to Frontierland at Magic Kingdom, a new area themed to Pixar Animation Studios’ “Cars” will leave Radiator Springs and head to the wilderness with two new attractions including an off-road race. In the meantime, we’ll be on the hunt for new updates from Disney World and more — so stay tuned to the Disney Food Blog for the latest news! 13. A brand-new, celebrity chef-led restaurant is now open in Disney World! Bourbon Steak! Bourbon Steak by Michael Mina has just opened at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort, and this new restaurant offers a reimagined modern take on the quintessential American steakhouse. We recently got a sneak peek at this new spot, but now, we’re bringing you our FULL review! Atmosphere Bourbon Steak offers a reimagined modern take on the quintessential American steakhouse with premium cuts of beef and seafood infused with global flavors, along with decadent signature desserts, and world-class beverage offerings. Bourbon Steak entrance Chef Mina is a well-known chef who owns more than 40 restaurants worldwide. He has multiple Michelin stars and currently has other restaurants in Florida, including Bourbon Steak in Aventura and Prime 54 in Miami Beach. We’re excited to see what Chef Mina is bringing to Orlando! Bourbon Steak This place is SWANKY, and we love the dark vibes that go along with the richness of a steakhouse. There are a few different areas of the restaurant, which makes things feel really intimate no matter where you’re seated. Look at the decor! But enough about the restaurant — what’s on the menu here?! Menu At Bourbon Steak, you’ll find a wide range of steakhouse-inspired selections including chilled seafood and caviar, soups and salads, tartare and ceviche… Bourbon Steak Menu …along with plenty of steak offerings like a 32-ounce porterhouse and wagyu. Menu Sides include delicious-sounding eats like roasted mushrooms with garlic herb butter, jalapeño creamed corn, and black truffle mac and cheese. And, of course, there’s plenty for dessert — including BEIGNETS! Dessert! The Bourbon Steak Lounge will also serve “handcrafted cocktails, fine wines, and rare spirits.” You can find plenty of cocktails along with an extensive wine list. Cocktail offerings And now, onto the main event — the food! Eats Soon after we ordered, a complimentary Fry Trio was brought out to us! Don’t expect free bread service here. It’s even BETTER. It is a complimentary fry flight, a fry trio. Our server explained that Michael Mina loves to do things in trios, and he loves little flights of things, so this was naturally like 3 fries, 3 sauces, kind of a great idea. Fry Trio There were Truffle Aioli fries with a truffle aioli to dip in, regular Herbed Fries with regular ketchup, and then Paprika fries with the housemade bourbon barbecue sauce. All three of these were awesome. Our favorite was the truffle aioli — we completely killed them. The flavor is super strong, but not so strong that you wouldn’t want the aioli with it. Both were just kind of buttery, and the umami was incredibly intense, yet delicious. The herbed fries were perfectly seasoned with the sweetness of ketchup, a classic fry experience. Then, the paprika fries were really tasty on their own, and the barbecue sauce here is smoky and has a little bit of kick to it. It’s almost like a mesquite with just a little bit of kick, where it’s not spicy, but it’s enough to add some interest. SO fun We kicked things off with the Black Truffle Bread for $14. Black Truffle Bread This was maybe some of the best bread we’ve ever had at Disney World, and we’ve had LOTS of bread at Disney World over the years. We don’t love the idea of paying $14 for bread, but after eating this — we would do it again in a heartbeat. They’re basically Parker House rolls with black salt, herbs, and truffle butter soaked into the bread. One of our reporters ate four pieces of this and had zero regrets. Imagine a super elevated garlic knot — it was SO good. Black Truffle Bread Next up, we ordered the Onion Soup Gratin with caramelized onions, a trio of cheeses, and a garlic baguette, which is available for $15. Onion Soup Gratin This was an elevated French Onion Soup, and it really wowed us. There’s a little bit of veal broth in addition to beef broth, which helps to cut kind of the saltiness and make it a little bit richer compared to your typical French onion. This is, again, probably one of our favorite French onions we’ve ever had. Everything in this was so delicious — it had big, bold, oniony flavor and almost a gravy-esque, like Thanksgiving-esque flavor to it. It was incredibly rich and cheesy, and we would have been satisfied if our meal ended here. But, we’re SO glad it didn’t. SO cheesy We also got the Jumbo Lump Crab Cake for $26, served with a pink peppercorn tartar sauce, Old Bay, and Florida citrus. Jumbo Lump Crab Cake This was outstanding. We were a little concerned when it was brought out, because it didn’t look like a traditional crab cake with a bunch of breading and everything. It was just kind of like a lump of crab, but it was so good. It did have some crunch on the outside, but there were also some really nice fresh peppers and lots of microgreens in it. The problem with most crab cakes is that they tend to be mostly filler — but that’s not the case here. It’s basically just giant lumps of crab with a pepper aioli sauce. LOTS of crab For our first entrée, we ordered the 10-oz Center Cut Filet Mignon, which is $69. We opted for Chimichurri ($6) and Béarnaise ($8) sauces on the side. 10 oz Center Cut Filet Mignon This was an INCREDIBLE steak. One of the best we’d had in years — in or outside of Disney parks. There was a beautiful crust on the outside with a pleasant saltiness, and it was perfectly cooked to order at medium rare. We’ve had some medium rare filets lately that had a bit of a chewiness, and this had NO chewiness. It was like butter to cut through and chew. Incredible flavor. If you want a steak in Disney World, we think you need to come here. It is classic steakhouse style, so you get pretty much just the steak. Steak! We got béarnaise sauce and chimichurri at our server’s suggestion. We love chimichurri, but this was a bit too oily for our taste, and we found it a little overpowering for the filet. But, our server said “béarnaise and filets were made for each other,” and he was right. Holy smokes. It was like this buttery smooth, rich elevation of what was already a delicious steak. Chimichurri and Bearnaise OH BOY. This was NUTS. The Maine Lobster Pot Pie is $82 and is definitely an experience. This is served with market vegetables, russet potatoes, black truffle, and brandy-lobster cream. Maine Lobster Pot Pie They roll up to your table with this massive pot pie dish, carve the top off perfectly, and then reconstruct the lobster tail and claws on top of the crust, then ladle on the veggies and pot pie filling all around it. Flavor-wise wise this was a TON of lobster — especially for one person. There were beautiful, huge, meaty pieces that pulled apart easily. The filling of the pie was basically like a rich buttery sauce that infused all of the veggies with that flavor and paired perfectly with the lobster. Add the surprisingly durable crust of the pie, and you have a luscious, beautiful dish. A whole experience Be warned: It’s extremely rich! This is an indulgent meal. The story with this is that it was Michael Mina’s go-to for dinner parties, and people loved it so much and requested it so often that he started serving it in his restaurants. Maine Lobster Pot Pie On the side, we ordered the Creamy Mac & Cheese with black truffle for $17. Creamy Mac & Cheese with black truffle This was a very solid mac and cheese! It was shell pasta with a sauce that texturally reminded us of a Béchamel because it was so creamy and, yes, rich. It was also loaded with a crisper, saltier cheese (Parmesan or Pecorino Romano, probably) that added a bit of a firmer texture and a pleasant sharpness to your bite that cut through the creaminess while keeping things super cheesy. Delicious, but we’ve had a LOT of good mac and cheeses, so it’s hard to be a standout. We didn’t get much of the black truffle flavor here! Creamy Mac & Cheese with black truffle Finally, it was time for dessert — so we ordered the Warm Beignets & Dipping Custards for $19. These are served with Macallan 12 Year butterscotch pudding, crème brûlée with fresh raspberries, and milk chocolate pot de crème. BEIGNETS! The “sauces” are literally like desserts on their own. A chocolate mousse, a literal crème brûlée, and a salted caramel pudding with Macallan in it. These were so insanely good, but again – very rich and sweet, and please, for the love of everything good, share this dessert. You get a ton of fluffy, hot beignets to dip. The crème brûlée was pretty standard — if you do a crème brûlée right, they are all pretty good. So this one was pretty good with a creamy custard and sticky, crunchy top. Creme Brulee The salted caramel blew us away as the most unique, with a delicious caramel-like texture that was still kept light. You could certainly taste the liquor and feel a bit of a burn, which elevated this far beyond what you’d expect from a beginner dip. Macallan 12 Year butterscotch sauce The mousse was solid as well and honestly genius to dip a beignet into lighter mousse instead of heavy chocolate sauce. Chocolate Pot de Creme Last, but not least, we also got the Key Lime Napoleon, which was $14. This is described as layers of flaky sugared puff pastry with citrus cream. Key Lime Napoleon We loved this! They said this was a nod to Florida flavors, of course. They were very clear that we needed to crush it to get everything to mix together. The key lime was tart enough to cause that zing in your jaw, but not so tart as to make you pucker, and it was balanced very well by the classic sweetness of the raspberry sauce and fresh raspberry. We sometimes find Napoleon textures a little off-putting, but this one was done very well with the thin, crunchy pastry on top and the lady fingers supporting it. A bit had a good combo of creaminess, crunch, and soft pastry. SO pretty Drinks To drink, we opted for Our Famous Martini ($22). This is made with Grey Goose vodka and Bombay Sapphire, lemon, manzanilla sherry, dry vermouth, and citrus essence. Our Famous Martini This was truly an incredible martini. There was no bite or burn at all from the liquor, but you could still taste the flavor of the liquor. It was extremely balanced, and that citrus essence is definitely present and aromatic. It was so drinkable despite tasting extremely liquor-forward, one of the best straight martinis we think we’ve ever had from that perspective. We also loved the presentation of martini accoutrements on the side, including a regular olive, a bleu cheese-stuffed olive, a lemon rind for a twist, and a pearl onion. Next up, we tried the Blueberry Martini for $18. This one is made with blueberry-infused Hansons of Sonoma vodka, oleo saccharum, saline, and lemon. Blueberry Martini Our server told us this was one of their most popular drinks, so we ordered it too. This was interesting because it came with blue cheese-stuffed blueberries on the side. We tried these, and we thought they were SO unique. If you did not like blue cheese, these would be an offense to nature and food, and fruit. The martini itself was another very smooth drinker. Now, contrary to many a popular blue tinnis like the one in California Grill, this one was not overly sweet. You could definitely smell it when you picked the drink up, and when you drank it, but it wasn’t an overly strong blueberry flavor. Nosh or Not This Disney World restaurant is a must-visit if… You’re looking for new, upscale dining and incredible service. You love steak and steakhouse vibes — this was one of the best steaks we’ve had in a while! You’re celebrating a special occasion and want a restaurant to match. You should skip this Disney World spot if… You’re looking for a quick bite to eat before heading back into the hustle and bustle of Disney World. You want cheap eats that are still delicious. Delicious, yes, but you won’t find cheap eats here. You have kiddos that aren’t used to dining in upscale environments. Overall This is truly a beautiful restaurant. Feels classic AND modern. Upscale and comfortable. Not to mention, the service was amazing! They had 100% staff retention from Shula’s, and this team rules. It’s certainly expensive, even by Disney standards, so it’s probably best saved for a special occasion. But hey, why not make dinner at Bourbon Steak a special occasion?! 14. Disney World is bringing back a few beloved holiday events this year — but the resort is also making it harder to attend. Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party, and Disney Jollywood Nights are all returning in 2025, and we’re super excited to experience everything these events have to offer! However, something we’re not excited about is the price increase for all three events. That’s right, all three after-hours events will be more expensive in 2025 — a trend we’ve already seen for a ton of routine offerings at Disney World like food and park tickets. Each year, Disney World gets more expensive, and we don’t see that changing anytime soon. We’ve been visiting Disney World daily for YEARS now, and these price increases have been our least favorite trend. ©Disney Let’s first cover the two parties happening at Magic Kingdom. When the dates for the 2025 Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party dropped, we learned a scary truth. Ticket prices vary by date, with prices ranging from $119 to $229. That base price is the same as last year, but the top end is a $30 increase from 2024! Last year, the max price per ticket was $199. Not so scary! As for the party itself, this is a separately-ticketed event (as are the other two events) — meaning, if you want a full day at the park, you’ll need to buy a regular Disney World park ticket in addition to this event ticket. When you factor in the price increases and paying for each individual in your group, the totals look mighty terrifying. Hitchhiking Ghosts at Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party Guests can enter the party as early as 4 PM, and the party runs from 7 PM until midnight. You can attend on select dates in August, September, and October. The dates for this year’s party are as follows: August: 15, 17, 19, 22, 24, 26, 29 September: 2, 5, 7, 9, 12, 14, 16, 19, 21, 23, 25, 26, 28, 30 October: 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 10, 13, 14, 16, 17, 19, 23, 24, 26, 28, 30, 31 Tickets include entrance, exclusive character meet-and-greets, several trick or treat spots, exclusive merch and snacks, and more. They’ll put a spell on you Later this year at Magic Kingdom, the park is hosting Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party, and this, too, won’t be kind on your wallet. 15. If you’re planning a trip to Disney World, you’ve probably figured out the basics like where you’re staying, what tickets you need, and maybe even where you’re eating (the most important decision, in our humble opinion). We LOVE ALDI! But you also need to think about what you’re packing. Going to Disney World requires some essentials to make your trip that much better. That includes things like backpacks, water bottles, cooling towels, and more. Well, if you’re packing for a Disney World trip soon, you’ll want to head to ALDI because you’ll be able to get a lot of these essentials next week, July 30th through August 5th. 2-Pack Cooling Towels ©ALDI It gets VERY hot in Florida, and with the humidity, it feels even hotter. We’ve had record-breaking heat in Disney World this year, so if you’re visiting during these summer months, you’ll want to stay cool. Cooling towels are a great way to do that. You just wet them, wrap them around your neck, or put them on your forehead for a few minutes, and you’ll start feeling way more comfortable in the heat. Kid’s Stainless Steel Water Bottle ©ALDI Another thing we always stress if you’re visiting Disney World in the summer is that you need to stay hydrated. We recommend keeping a water bottle on you at all times, and ALDI happens to be releasing some stainless steel water bottles for kids next week. These water bottles hold up to 16-oz. of liquid plus they’re dishwasher safe, making them easy to clean. Reusable Cutlery ©ALDI This is something we love having handy for festivals, and with the EPCOT Food and Wine Festival coming up soon, we’ll recommend keeping reusable cutlery handy. Then you won’t have to hunt down utensils for every food booth you visit. These can just be rewashed and used again. Plus they come in their own handy case. Reusable Straws ©ALDI You’ll find paper straws in use around Disney World and, well, let’s face it, they’re not always up to the task. That’s why we like to keep reusable straws handy because we can just use them, wash them, and then use them again. Now you can get 7 straws at ALDI in a variety of colors, as well as a straw cleaner. Backpacks ©ALDI Backpacks are the perfect Disney day bag because you can throw a lot of your essentials in them, and still have room for all your other things. They’re also easy to wear as you walk around the parks all day long. ALDI is bringing a variety of backpacks in different colors and styles to stores next week. First Aid Kit ©ALDI You should always travel with a first aid kit because you never know when you might need it. ALDI has you covered, though, because you’ll see some first aid kits next week that include everything you need for little boo-boos and injuries. Cheddar-Filled Pretzel Bites ©ALDIf Want to feel like you’re in the parks even when you’re home? Grab some parks snacks like these pretzel bites that even come with cheese INSIDE them. So be sure to head to ALDI next week to check out all these great Disney essentials finds! And stay tuned to DFB for more. 16. It is time for another look at the progress made on Disney World’s newest hotel, Disney Lakeshore Lodge. Disney Lakeshore Lodge Construction While this new hotel isn’t expected to open until 2027, it is always interesting to take a look at the progress being made. This hotel will be a new Disney Vacation Club Resort hotel, and it is located right by Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground. Disney Lakeshore Lodge is “inspired by the majesty of nature and its enduring influence on Disney artists.” The hotel is located on the land that was once home to Disney’s River Country water park. We still have a while until we can step inside, but let’s take a look at what the hotel currently looks like! Disney Lakeshore Lodge Construction from Fort Wilderness The above picture was taken from inside Fort Wilderness, and you can see how towering Disney Lakeshore Lodge looks compared to Fort Wilderness. From the water, you can see that they are making great progress on the structure of the hotel. We are counting at least 8 floors on some parts of the buildings! The floors are starting to look more sealed off with walls. Disney Lakeshore Lodge Construction We are still very intrigued by these A-frame structures that have been up for a bit. We aren’t exactly sure what they will end up being yet, but it is possible they could end up being some sort of cabin. Nothing is certain yet, and only time will tell! We are intrigued by these structures! Currently, there are four A-frame structures being worked on to the left of the hotel (closest to the Fort Wilderness boat dock). The structures definitely have some FANTASTIC views, that’s for sure! These structures have been up since at least June, and we haven’t seen a whole lot of change on them just yet. What are they going to be? Here’s a look around the side of the hotel. This is definitely going to be a large-scale hotel! There is still lots of work to be done before the hotel is completed, but much of the structure is in place it appears. Disney Lakeshore Lodge Construction I have been reporting on Disney World hotels for almost two years, and it is always exciting to see progress being made! Plus, it is always fun to “imagine” what different parts of the construction will be. If you want help planning your next Disney World vacation, be sure to reach out to Small World Vacations! 19. Universal Orlando has identified two shows that will be part of the Halloween Horror Nights lineup for 2025, and they both have familiar formats to HHN fans. The Nightmare Fuel series continues with “Circus of Decay.” A social media post from the Universal team states “This once-vibrant circus has festered into an unending nightmare. It’s a sinister spectacle of pyro, aerialists and illusions.” The Fuel shows started in 2021 and have a hard-rocking reputation. HHN will also feature a lagoon show called “Haunt-O-Phonic: A Ghoulish Journey” at the theme park. “A ghost story is rising from its watery grave to haunt the Universal Studios lagoon, featuring towering water screens and eerie music,” is the Universal description. Universal is in the midst of rolling out the 10 haunted houses and five scare zones that will be part of the Universal Studios theme park event, which runs on 48 select nights between Aug. 29 and Nov. 2. The fright fest is after usual parks hours and requires separate ticketing. All levels of tickets are now on sale at halloweenhorrornights.com. Email me at dbevil@orlandosentinel.com. 20. Magic Kingdom is supposed to be the most magical place on Earth… but right now, it’s got some not-so-magical issues. Lots of changes! There are some closures and changes happening that could seriously impact your trip — especially if you’re visiting with little ones or you’ve got your heart set on certain rides. A few iconic attractions are shutting down for years, and some are gone for good. So if you’re heading to Magic Kingdom soon, here are the biggest problems you’ll want to know about ahead of time. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Closed Until 2026 Let’s start with the big one — literally. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is officially closed for a long refurbishment and isn’t expected to reopen until 2026. That’s a long time without one of the park’s most iconic rides. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad construction June 2025 This is especially rough because BTMR is a major part of the Frontierland lineup. Without it, the area feels a little… empty. It also means more pressure on rides like Tiana’s Bayou Adventure and Haunted Mansion nearby and in turn an increase those wait times. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad If you were planning your ride strategy around Big Thunder, you’ll need to pivot. And if this was one of your all-time favorites? We’re right there with you — it’s a tough loss. Dumbo’s Playground Is Closed Until “Later” in 2025 Dumbo the Flying Elephant is still running, don’t worry — but the attached playground (also known as the air-conditioned waiting area that’s perfect for parents and an absolute lifesaver for kids) is closed until “later” in 2025. Dumbo the Flying Elephant If you’ve been to Magic Kingdom with little ones, you know how huge this is. That playground has always been a clutch spot to cool down and burn off some energy without waiting in a traditional line. Now, the standby line is… just a regular standby line. In the heat. With no play area. Trust us — you’ll want to get into that tent It’s one of those “small” closures that ends up making a big impact on families. If you’re traveling with younger kids, you’re going to want to plan some alternate cool-down breaks nearby — Casey Jr. Splash ‘N’ Soak Station is still around, and you might want to lean on it more than usual. Tom Sawyer Island and Liberty Square Riverboat Are Gone for Good It’s official: Tom Sawyer Island and the Liberty Square Riverboat both permanently closed on July 6th, 2025. Tom Sawyer Island is now CLOSED We know they weren’t necessarily on every guest’s must-do list, but this is a major change to the park’s layout — and to its sense of history. Tom Sawyer Island was one of those places where you could slow down, let kids explore at their own pace, and escape the crowds a bit. And the riverboat added a classic, scenic experience you really can’t get anywhere else in the park. Liberty Square Riverboat Now that they’re both gone, Liberty Square feels just a little emptier. Plus, it’s one less option when you’re looking for a quiet break during a busy park day. Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin Is Closing Soon — And For Awhile This one isn’t closed yet, but it’s coming up fast — Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin is officially closing on August 4th, and it’s not coming back until sometime in 2026. Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin Buzz has been a staple of Tomorrowland for over 20 years. It’s not just a fun shooter game — it’s also one of the most consistently family-friendly rides in the park. No height requirement, decent capacity, and a relatively comfortable queue (compared to others) made it a go-to for groups with mixed ages. ©Disney With this closure, Magic Kingdom is losing another attraction that helped absorb crowds and gave families a more interactive experience. And let’s be real — even if you’ve ridden it a million times, you still low-key try to beat your old high score every time. So What Does All This Mean for Your Trip? Magic Kingdom is still packed with attractions, shows, and characters — but there’s no denying these closures are going to affect how the park feels for the next year or so. You’re looking at fewer options, more pressure on remaining rides, and fewer quiet zones to take a breather. Cinderella Castle If you’ve got a trip coming up, this is the time to adjust your expectations and your game plan. Have a few backups in mind. Take more breaks where you can. And keep checking in with us — we’ll keep you updated on every change as it happens. We’ll be on the lookout for more ride closures and other updates you need to know about from Disney World. 21. Whether you love ’em or hate ’em, another Disney Virtual Queue has been removed! A brand-new Disneyland show made its debut with a Virtual Queue, but now the Virtual Queue is no more. Walt Disney: A Magical Life “Walt Disney – A Magical Life” made its debut at Disneyland Park on July 17th, 2025. When it opened, it was utilizing a Virtual Queue to help manage demand for the new show. However, you can now see the brand-new show WITHOUT needing to grab a Virtual Queue spot! As of right now — things are always subject to change, though — you can head to the Main Street Opera House and hop in the standby line to see the show. No more pre-planning to join the Virtual Queue and eagerly awaiting when your boarding group will be called. Now you can watch the show whenever you want during your day. Always make sure to check the Disneyland app for the most up-to-date information about Virtual Queues. Walt Disney — A Magical Life This new show tells the story of Walt Disney’s life through remastered footage and audio recordings. The show also features the first-ever audio-animatronic of Walt Disney himself. Currently, “Walt Disney – A Magical Life” is the only show playing in the Main Street Opera House, but eventually it will be shown in rotation with “Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln.” Main Street Opera House Exhibit Currently, the only experience at Disneyland Resort with a Virtual Queue available is World of Color: Happiness! Guests can head to the Disneyland app at 12 PM to join the Virtual Queue for the show. It is not required to join the Virtual Queue to watch World of Color: Happiness! but it is highly recommended. There are additional viewing areas for the show, but the Virtual Queue will allow you to enter your designated reserved viewing area. World of Color: Happiness! 22. The long-awaited nighttime parade for Magic Kingdom has hit the streets. Disney Starlight: Dream the Night Away is now regularly scheduled for two runnings per night at the theme park. Lately, new Orlando park offerings have been just as advertised. Sure enough, Epic Universe boasts distinct, immersive worlds. SeaWorld Orlando’s Expedition Odyssey is, indeed, a picturesque virtual tour of the Arctic. And Walt Disney World’s lead-up to Starlight was spot-on, with a drip-drip-drip release of float designs, music details, expected characters and back story. But there’s nothing like the real thing, right before our eyes. Here are some musings I had after seeing Disney Starlight three times over two days. Four sets of Disney princesses and princes go into ballroom mode in the middle of Disney Starlight, the new parade at Magic Kingdom theme park. (Phelan M. Ebenhack for the Orlando Sentinel)It’s lit The pre-opening renderings of the floats were accurate and representative, yet they don’t capture the intensity of the elaborate lighting in motion. It’s more active than I anticipated. That includes the digital screen work, with pixels galore and changing imagery. For instance, the centerpiece candle aboard the “Encanto” float morphs into a new visual that gives it an even more glowing sort of “wow!” factor. There are so many special effects that it’s a photographic challenge (not to mention the very darkened atmosphere of Magic Kingdom during Starlight). Some snaps will be floats only half-lit, but wait a sec, here comes some more. Oh, wait, now it’s a completely different color. Pow! Now everything is white light, SpectroMagic style. Just keep swimming. The Blue Fairy of "Pinocchio" fame leads the Disney Starlight parade. The character also addresses stargazers (aka spectators). (Phelan M. Ebenhack for Orlando Sentinel)Building and building The first unexpected moment happens right off the bat with the size of the Blue Fairy. Let’s call her Big Blue Fairy now. She has some characters hidden up her stardust, too. It was wise not to precede her with the customary slow-walking banner characters because she would tower over them. Most of the units are just plain ol’ jumbo. The parade order is sly after the BBF, starting small but pretty, including the “Wish” unit with Asha and Valentino. (Shame on you who thought that was “Pocahontas.”) Then, getting more formidable and striking with Elsa and the “Frozen” unit. It gets bigger by the arrival of the princesses and their float, that’s a certain upgrade, big enough for four royal couples to dance. Things become architectural with Peter Pan, Wendy and Big Ben, building up to the grand finale float that’s a train engine featuring Goofy as engineer and Mickey and Minnie bringing up the rear to the jaunty tune of Main Street Electrical Parade. (Is it wrong to square dance at a parade? It felt OK.) In the Disney Starlight parade, the "Coco" float includes music and some steamy special effects. (Phelan M. Ebenhack for the Orlando Sentinel)Look both ways Starlight watching advice: Look at the floats as they approach, look at them closely when they get to your spot, then look again as they pass. For a recent parade-trend story, I interviewed Ryan Miziker, chief creative officer of Miziker Entertainment Inc., which designs parades on a global basis. He said their design method includes creating a recognizable shape from a distance. “The second sort of level that we like to do is that once that shape gets close to you, you either find things to discover, which are maybe other sculptural elements, or maybe that’s the VIPs that are on the characters and so forth. Or maybe it’s something that changes when you get up close or that there’s animation that you didn’t see, you know, a cannon blast or color change,” Miziker said. “There’s this second level of excitement and kind of processing that happens once the parade gets close to you and the music comes by,” he said. To this I add the third stage — a kind of even double-take — for Starlight. For instance, some ground performers that had been forgettable up close and adjacent to the megafloat looked gorgeous in the distance as glowing butterflies, part of the “Wish” presentation, as they traveled away from us through Frontierland. So look both ways. Repeatedly. That’s even true at the end. It would be easy to miss Jiminy Cricket, whose on-screen animated appearance is on the back of the small tail-end title float. He’s not giant, somewhere between walk-around costumed character size and actual cricket size. Peter Pan and Wendy are up on the rooftops of London during the new Disney Starlight parade. (Phelan M. Ebenhack for Orlando Sentinel)Quick hits • Even though it’s dark-dark during the parade, you can still see strung-together lights that aren’t lit. Don’t dwell on this. It’s darkest before the dawn. For instance, the costumes for the on-ground dancers with the princess float are made for lighting, but the first impression was like they were Christmas costumes I might rig up at home. But then they went into flicker/strobe mode and all was forgiven. • And much like the renderings didn’t tell the whole story, some rehearsal footage released by Disney had left me unmoved. Oh, look, dancing with fabric. Not so notable in broad daylight, but the effect those performers and their lit banners had with the “Moana” float was top-notch after all. Not to get all Very New Testament on you, but “prejudge not, lest ye be prejudged.” • It was curious to me that Tinkerbell was the only costumed character to walk the parade route. She can fly, she can fly, she can fly, she can fly, she can fly. • Oh yes, there’s Starlight merchandise for sale in Magic Kingdom stores, including a polyester fleece throw, T-shirts, bubble wands with lighting effects and mouse ears with Mickey and Tink that light up. (Phelan M. Ebenhack for the Orlando Sentinel)Expand Time management Here’s the deal. It takes about 10-12 minutes for the length of Disney Starlight to pass by any point. Even the largest of its floats takes just a minute to roll past. Everyone’s different, but folks who camp for a spot for hours for a 10-minute experience are a mystery to me. Confession: I’m not a full-on parade fan, either. Perhaps it’s marching band PTSD, but I’d rather take advantage of all those parade-waiting people not being on rides to hit other attractions. Then walk up and get a decent vantage point without sitting on hot concrete. Your results may vary. For instance, others may camp out for a spot for the 9 p.m. parade, stay put for the 10 p.m. showing of “Happily Ever After” fireworks, which leads right into the 11 p.m. running of Starlight. You be you. FYI: The parade route starts next to the firehouse near the front of Magic Kingdom, loops around the flagpole area, rolls up Main Street, bears right to do three-fourths of the circle in front of Cinderella Castle, takes the bridge to Liberty Square, then hangs a left into Frontierland, where it exits the stage by Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. It’s basically the reverse path that we’ve grown accustomed to with Festival of Fantasy, the continuing daytime parade. Disney World is still requiring annual passholders to make date-specific park reservations, and that, of course, is true of Magic Kingdom with the new parade. It has temporarily suspended the park-hopping workaround where you’d make a reservation at one of the other three parks, then glide over to MK for the parade. No end date has been given for this change. Find yourself planning to go on a day when reservations are no longer available? Keep checking back. At least twice, that has loosened up in the morning. (Disney shares neither attendance nor capacity figures.) Finally, a reminder that not everyone lives for every word written about the parks. I was watching the monorail surge after the 9 p.m. parade from a bench with a family who had no idea it was Starlight’s opening night. A cast member advised them to wait 15 minutes before trying to exit the park instead of joining the throng. I agreed but said they could just stay for “Happily Ever After,” watch the 11 p.m. parade (they had only seen the earlier one from a distance, trapped in Adventureland), then high-tail it out. Later, one asked, “Do you come here often?” I nodded. His follow-up question: “Is this parade in each theme park?” Email me at dbevil@orlandosentinel.com. BlueSky: @themeparksdb.
