  1. National Geographic Cruises offer voyages that “bring together the legacy of National Geographic, with its long commitment to sharing and protecting world wonders, and the unparalleled expertise of Lindblad Expeditions, with its 50+ years of taking travelers to the planet’s remote and wild places.” National Geographic Cruise dining Recently, we had the chance to experience a National Geographic Cruise, and check out all of the experiences, expeditions, and — our focus today — food the voyage has to offer. So, what’s it like to eat on a National Geographic Cruise? This is what we found… So, before we get into our thoughts on the food itself, a quick rundown of how dining on a National Geographic Cruise: Breakfast and lunch are served buffet style in the outdoor cafe area, weather permitting. Each of these meals is served for an hour, and after that hour, they are closed FAST from our observation. Dinner is served in an indoor dining room (which will also serve breakfast and lunch only in the event of bad weather). The first night was a buffet dinner, while the following nights were sit-down, course meals. Each night, you can choose your table and, in turn, sit with different people, including the Nat Geo specialists on board. Of note with dinner, the day’s entrees are posted in the morning, with cruisers asked to make a tentative selection as a way to lessen food waste and allow the crew to judge how much of each item will be needed on a given day. If you wanted more than one entree, you could check more than one box. If you changed your mind by dinner time, that was also allowed. We LOVED this idea. Choose your dining option In addition to those meal times, there’s a “high tea” offered in the lounge options, including finger sandwiches and charcuterie plates, including locally sourced meats, in the late afternoon. In addition, some snacks, including fruit, cookies, cereal bars, breadsticks, dried fruit, and coffee, are available in the Observation Lounge. Drinks are always available at the bar (located in the lounge). This included sodas, coffee, tea, and alcohol. There are also multiple water bottle filling stations around the boat. They provide reusable NatGeo water bottles that you can keep as a souvenir. There was no room service option. All of this being said, it is important to note that outside of these scheduled mealtimes, there aren’t many — if any — options for off-schedule meals on the ship. Let’s move on to the food itself. To put it bluntly: The food was incredible. We found it to be a top-notch, full gourmet offering with lots of options for every palate. Each night there were multiple offerings for soup, salad, appetizer, and main courses, including vegetarian options. The food was always restaurant quality. If you are looking for chicken strips or pizza, this is not the cruise for you. Dining options Bread and butter varieties, as well as included wine pairings, changed each night. Dessert was usually two choices: a specialty type dessert or a sorbet. Desserts From our observation, allergies are also taken very seriously. We had a guest in our media group with some allergies, and the chef always came out to tell her what she was safe to eat. Steak Some of the standouts included steak frites, an exceptional Caesar salad, and some incredible vegetarian dishes made with locally sourced ingredients from the ship’s ports of call. Charcuterie Suffice to say, we loved the majority of the dining options and operations offered on National Geographic’s cruise. Stay tuned to DFB for further coverage of this voyage. 2. Thanks to their all-day comfort, T-shirts have become the go-to “uniform” for many Disney travelers. ©DFB Store Whether it’s plain tees or graphic designs featuring iconic Disney characters, most guests can’t get enough of them. However, there are some hacks to keep in mind next time you’re packing! DISCLOSURE: This post may contain affiliate links, meaning when you click the links and make a purchase, we receive a commission. Wear White T-Shirts to Attract Less Heat Amazon It’s no secret that your time in Disney World can get HOT, especially if you’re visiting during late spring, summer, or early fall. That’s why we make sure to pack plenty of white t-shirts when we’re traveling during steamy times of year, since white attracts less heat than dark colors. SHOP HERE Roll Your T-Shirts When Packing One of our favorite multi-purpose packing hacks is to roll your t-shirts instead of folding them. Rolling them makes them more compact so they take up less space in your luggage AND it can also help reduce wrinkling! ©Amazon Plus, we’ve also got a bonus hack for this one — now that they’re nice and compact, you can pack your rolled-up t-shirts in your carry-on bag to save space in your luggage for your bigger and bulkier items. SHOP HERE Pack Plain T-Shirts for Character Signatures If you love meeting characters but are bummed that you never seem to pull out that autograph book again after your vacation is over, we’ve got a solution. Pack some plain white t-shirts to have the characters sign when you meet them! Amazon Collecting character signatures on a t-shirt is a fun way to create a customized souvenir that you can actually reuse after your trip! SHOP HERE Wear Moisture-Wicking T-Shirts Between the sweating, the water rides, and the unpredictable Florida thunderstorms, it’s safe to assume that you’ll likely end up getting wet at some point during your Disney World vacation. And if you’re wearing a t-shirt that holds onto that moisture, it can make for a very LONG and soggy day. Amazon What’s the solution? For one, we pack plenty of t-shirts made of moisture-wicking material so our clothes dry faster when we inevitably do get wet. Trust us, it can go a long way toward reducing chafing, discomfort, and the grumpiness that comes along with them! SHOP HERE Pack An Extra T-Shirt in Your Park Bag Even if you are wearing a moisture-wicking shirt, we’ve found that it’s still a good idea to pack an extra t-shirt in your park bag. Take it from us — we’ve ended up SOAKED from a popup downpour, covered in spilled BBQ sauce, and countless other mishaps where no amount of moisture-wicking could save us. It’s times like that when we’re eternally grateful to have an extra shirt we can change into fast! Amazon Plus, you can even use one of the earlier hacks and roll up that t-shirt before you pack it in your park bag so it takes up less space! SHOP HERE Who knew there were so many things to keep in mind even when packing a wardrobe staple like t-shirts?? After tons of trial and error, these are our 5 favorite t-shirt hacks to help make our Disney World trip more magical AND comfortable! 4. When you’re on vacation, you’re probably not going to want to get up super early…unless, of course, you’re in Disney World. Ticket and Transportation Center We all know that regular rules don’t apply in Disney World, and getting up early is PART of the experience. That’s because we’re all about that rope drop, but if you’re driving to the parks or taking the Monorail for any reason, you’ll want to be even earlier. We’ve learned that 7:30 AM is the PERFECT time to arrive at the Transportation and Ticket Center in Disney World. Here’s why you want to be at the Transportation and Ticket Center (TTC) so early, although the parks don’t open until later. If you arrive at the TTC more than 30 minutes before park opening, you’re going to find that the adage “the early bird gets the worm” is true. Why? Because one, you’re going to find a MUCH better parking spot that’s closer to transportation. That’s because you’re getting there before everyone else. Parking at the TTC If you are arriving at the TTC, you’ll go through security there, rather than at the parks. You’ll find the experience is MUCH improved if you arrive on or before 7:30 AM. The lines are shorter and you’ll get through security a lot faster. That means you’re headed to the parks faster, too, ahead of rope drop. Avoid the long lines at security When it’s time to catch that Monorail or Ferry, you’ll also find shorter lines for transportation. Again, this is going to speed up the process of you getting to the park quickly, putting you closer to the front of the line for rope drop. It’s a win-win-win! This line is shorter the earlier you get here Just a note, too. When we talk about park opening, we’re not referring to early entry, although if you arrive at the TTC before early entry, you’ll be in that sweet spot where everything moves quickly, too. So you’ll want to set that alarm and get up and get going to beat the crowds. Trust us…it’s totally worth it. 5. A collision at one of the nation’s busiest airports is being investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board, according to The New York Times. ©Getty Images On Wednesday, October 1st, two Delta Airlines jets collided at New York’s LaGuardia Airport. The “low-speed” collision, which occurred on one of the airport’s taxiways, saw the wing of one aircraft slam into the other’s cockpit window, sending one person to the hospital. According to the airline, the two CRJ-900 regional jets involved were being operated by regional carrier Endeavor Air at the time. The collision happened at the intersection of the airport’s taxiways M and A, as the wing of flight 5155 — which was preparing to depart for Roanoke, Virginia — crashed into Flight 5047, which had just arrived from Charlotte, North Carolina. The flight from Charlotte had 57 passengers onboard, while the flight to Roanoke had 28 passengers. ©NBC News Passenger Nate Cicero, who was on the Roanoke flight, told New York’s WABC affiliate, “Our pilot slammed on the brakes, but unfortunately, we t-boned the other plane. Once you looked up out the window and saw, saw the other plane there, we were going right towards them. It was an inevitable crash.” According to NTSB spokesperson Eric Weiss, an investigative team from the agency had been dispatched to the airport, and flight recorders from both planes had been recovered and taken to the agency’s headquarters for analysis. Generally, the NTSB releases a preliminary accident report within 30 days, and a full report including probable cause, in 12 to 18 months. LaGuardia Airport ©Wikipedia Delta said in a statement that they intend to “work with all relevant authorities to review what occurred as safety of our customers and people comes before all else. We apologize to our customers for the experience.” ©Getty Images A shocking collision between two taxiing planes at New York’s LaGuardia Airport is now being investigated by the NTSB. 6. There are so many amazing Disney World snacks! The ICONIC Mickey Ice Cream Bar! Over in Magic Kingdom, there are so many snacks that make the parks what they are! From table service dining to quick service favorites, it can be hard to know where to start! That’s why we’re breaking down the 18 things we’re literally begging you to eat on your next stop by Cinderella Castle. Deciding where to eat at Magic Kingdom and, more importantly, where the BEST eats are around the park can be tough if you’ve never visited before or if it’s been a while since your last visit. Luckily for you, it’s our JOB to eat around Disney World, and we’ve eaten it all! Magic Kingdom’s Cinderella Castle One of the most asked questions I get as a Disney Food Blog writer and reporter is “What’s your favorite to eat?” Well, that’s a hard question that depends on the day and how I’m feeling. So, we decided to come up with a comprehensive list of favorites you’ll find throughout the park for all kinds of options, ranging from something sweet to the savoriest of all. Here’s a complete list of EVERYTHING we’re begging you not to skip on during your next visit to Magic Kingdom! Casey’s Corner Casey’s Corner is one of our favorite quick-service spots to grab a quick bite to eat. If you’re stopping by this little slice of Heaven on the corner of Main Street U.S.A., you HAVE to grab the Corn Dog Nuggets (and side of plastic cheese while you’re at it)! Crunchy Corn Dog Nuggets with Cheesy Goodness We’re constantly raving about these little nuggets because they work for most appetites, adults and kid approved, and they’re a versatile snack for when you want to sit for a few minutes or if you’re looking to keep moving. But they’re made even better when you order a side of cheese sauce (which we lovingly have dubbed “plastic cheese”) due to its shiny, runny consistency. The warm cheddar cheese sauce you might typically pair with a side of salty nacho chips goes perfectly with this savory snack! REVIEW: We Ate EVERYTHING at Casey’s Corner in Disney World The Friar’s Nook Ok — stay with us here because this is one of the most underrated restaurants you’ll find in all of Magic Kingdom. The Friar’s Nook is where you’ll find a few of our favorites in one fell swoop, like the Cheddar Bacon Ranch Tots… Loaded tots …Caramel Apple Doughnuts. The donuts! This spot is hardly ever super busy, and since the restaurant is one of those that you walk up to, place your order, and then find a seat nearby, it’s usually not hard to snag your snacks quickly. The Cheddar Bacon Ranch Tots are our go-to when we want an early breakfast or mid-day snack that won’t leave us super full afterwards, and the Caramel Apple Doughnuts are just the sweet thing to hit the spot without leaving our mouths aching in sweetness. REVIEW: Disney, Here’s Our Petition to Add More Loaded Tots to This Magic Kingdom Restaurant Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. Skipper’s Canteen Alright, this next one is truly an IYKYK type situation, but since we’re friends here, we’re letting you in on one of the best-kept secrets in all of Magic Kingdom. When you’re dining at Skipper’s Canteen, do yourself a favor and don’t forget to ask about their secret menu items. Like we would ever turn down Cheese Bread This is when your server will likely suggest the Cheese Bread (Pao de Queijo) that you won’t find on the printed menus anywhere. We’re insisting this is 1000% worth the ask, though! They’re bite-sized gooey cheese rolled into balls, covered in a thin layer of breading, and they even come with sauce to dip them in! REVIEW: This Secret Menu Is STILL One Of The Best Deals in Magic Kingdom! Gaston’s Tavern This is one restaurant where you could purchase practically anything in this place, and we’d tell you it’s one of our favorites with reckless abandon — and you’d still be right! But, if you’re looking to get specific, we’re HUGE fans of the Warm Cinnamon Roll… Delicious breakfast …Ham and Gruyere Sandwich… Inside …and LeFou’s Brew. LeFou’s Brew We can’t say enough good things about the creamy, warm Gruyère cheese smothering the ham sandwich or the ginormous and sweet smells of the cinnamon roll. But you’re going to need something to wash it all down with, and that’s where the sweet but at times tart flavors of the LeFou’s Brew frozen drink come in to really drive it all home. Take our word for it until you can try them all for yourself; they’re delicious! ALERT! A Popular Magic Kingdom Snack Has CHANGED Plaza Ice Cream Parlor There are three words that come to mind every time we pass the Plaza Ice Cream Parlor: All-American Sundae. All-American Sundae This classic sundae is the epitome of a classic ice cream treat, and with so many toppings to choose from at the restaurant, you can jazz it up to make it truly something special just for your enjoyment. Review: Is Plaza Ice Cream Parlor Still a MUST DO in Disney World? Tony’s Town Square Restaurant If you can deep-cover it in cheese, chances are we’re going to love whatever it is. But when you add that melted cheese fondue on top of crispy bread, it’s going to live rent-free in our minds for years to come. The Garlic Bread! Tony’s Town Square Restaurant earns a special place in our hearts for being that shining star in the darkness that knows just how quickly a great savory snack can turn your entire day around. If you’re looking for a snack that’s going to double as a pick-me-up that you probably could (but won’t want) to share with a friend, the Tony’s Garlic Bread for the Table is calling out to you! It’s toasted ciabatta with roasted garlic-butter and parmesan fonduta. What more can you ask for? I Never Thought I’d Recommend This Disney World Restaurant, But Here We Are Sunshine Tree Terrace If you find yourself in search of one of the best sweet treats you’ll find in all of Magic Kingdom, look no further than the I Lava You Float. I Lava You Float This treat has it all — popping texture, multiple fruity flavors, and our favorite DOLE WHIP! It truly is a party for the senses when you take your first bite, and it will leave you dreaming about the next time you can grab another. REVIEW: This Magic Kingdom Quick Service Restaurant Is DESSERT HEAVEN Aloha Isle Speaking of DOLE Whip treats, there’s another lurking not too far down the way. Over at Aloha Isle, you’ll find another one of our favorite floats, the Tropical Serenade! Tropical Serenade This float comes complete with coconut-flavored DOLE Whip AND a cute Kokmora cake pop, too! It’s the perfect blend of flavors for someone who is looking for a fun, melty ice cream-like treat without the citrusy flavors that will leave your tongue feeling raw afterwards. REVIEW: We Ate EVERYTHING at the Aloha Isle DOLE Whip Stand in Magic Kingdom Westward Ho You’ve got to time your visit just right for this next one, but we promise it’s worth hoofin’ it over to Frontierland for early in the morning. The Mickey-shaped Bacon-Pecan-Caramel Cinnamon Roll is your answer for an almost buffet-like breakfast in one treat! The Mickey Cinnamon Roll It’s a harmonious blend of sweet and savory yet textured bites all wrapped up in a Mickey-shaped eat — what’s not to love here? REVIEW: We’ll Say It — We Found a NEW Snack That RIVALS Gaston’s Cinnamon Roll in Magic Kingdom Golden Oak Outpost We know what you’re thinking, but we HAVE to talk about Magic Kingdom’s version of Tiana’s Famous Beignets. Tiana’s Famous Beignets Are they Scat Cat Club’s beignets? No. But they’re equally as good in their own right. When you taste these pillowy fried squares topped with powdered sugar, you’re instantly hooked on Tiana’s “man-catching” beignets (Lottie said so herself). You know, when a fictional character raves about a Disney Princess’s cooking so much that Disney brings it to the parks, it HAS to be THAT good! BEIGNETS Are Now In MAGIC KINGDOM! Columbia Harbor House This next restaurant is arguably our favorite to visit when we’re making our rounds for a day spent at Magic Kingdom. The seafood faire at Columbia Harbour House is unmatched in our book. Here you’ll want to pay close attention to the Lobster Roll… The Lobster Roll from Columbia Harbour House ...Maple-Mustard Glazed Salmon… Maple-mustard glazed salmon …and our beloved bite-sized snack, their Hushpuppies! We love these!!! We threw a proper fit when Disney World removed them from their menu briefly, and we’re not kidding when we say we fought HARD (through the power of suggestion and begging) to have them returned and rejoiced when we were once again able to order them with our meals! Shocking Sandwich News: Is Disney’s NEW Columbia Harbour House Menu Change a GOOD Thing? Auntie Gravity’s Galactic Goodies Coffee fans are going to LOVE the Salted Caramel Cold Brew! Cold Brew Float We didn’t know that soft-serve salted caramel ice cream paired so well with Joffrey’s Cold Brew coffee, but it’s a match made for each other. And the real bonus here is if you’re not a super fan of salted caramel soft serve, you can opt to sub it out for a few other classic flavors like creamy vanilla or rich chocolate and make it even more your own! REVIEW: We’re Formally Requesting That This Tomorrowland Snack NEVER Goes Away in Magic Kingdom Main Street Confectionery Last, but certainly not least, is the Peanut Butter Cookie Pie. Peanut Butter Cookie Pie Now, you know we had to save the best for last, and because we like you, we’re gonna let you in on a secret. We LOVE picking up a sweet (probably peanut butter flavored) treat at the end of our day at the Confectionery and bringing it back to our hotel room to enjoy in peace. There’s just something about treating yourself at the end of a long day at Disney World that will do wonders for your late-night snack cravings! 10. When you’re missing your home away from home (Disney World), Trader Joe’s has you covered! Trader Joe’s (Ablokhin/Getty Images) We’re OBSESSED with Disney snacks, and we know we’re not alone. EPCOT, in particular, has some of the best, and we often find ourselves daydreaming about some of the park’s tasty treats. While they won’t taste exactly the same, Trader Joe’s has plenty of similar snacks that take us back to places like the Germany pavilion, scratching that Disney itch even when we’re sitting at home! The Germany pavilion at EPCOT has lots and lots of our favorite snacks, including the Jumbo Pretzel from Sommerfest and Caramel Popcorn and the Werther’s Original Gingerbread Salted Caramel Cookie Sandwich at Karamell-Küche, among others. While it’s tough to get the genuine thing when we’re far away from EPCOT, Trader Joe’s does have a few snacks that get the job done. The Trader Joe’s frozen section has our hearts We often crave soft pretzels, but Trader Joe’s has us covered with Soft Pretzel Twists! These delicious twists are made by actual German pretzel experts, “who use a blend of wheat flour and malted barley flour to achieve that signature, plenty savory and slightly sweet Pretzel flavor.” Each twist is snack-sized and can be moistened with water, allowing you to salt them before sticking them in the oven and then enjoying! Whenever we can’t get our giant EPCOT pretzel, these guys certainly do the trick. ©Trader Joe’s You won’t find any lack of tasty cheese dips in the Germany pavilion, and if you’re craving some at home, check out the Raclette Sliced Cheese at Trader Joe’s! It comes “sliced and ready to melt over anything you desire, from potatoes and other starches to asparagus, quick-pickled onions, sliced Honeycrisp Apples, or even the contents of our Spicy Uncured Charcuterie Selection.” All you need to do is give them a quick three to five minutes under the broiler, or melt the cheese in a heavy frying pan or skillet, and voila, homemade cheese dip! ©Trader Joe’s Sauerkraut and German food go hand-in-hand, and Trader Joe’s certainly has plenty to offer in that department, such as the Sauerkraut with Pickled Persian Cucumbers! The pickled cucumbers are sliced into thin rounds, “lending extra texture to the kraut and providing just a little yummy pickle flavor.” Utilizing all-natural fermentation, you’ll get plenty of tart and tangy flavors with this one, as well as an extra crispy crunch. Use this treat to top off your hot dogs, put together a Reuben, make a slaw, or whatever your heart desires! ©Trader Joe’s If you’re missing some Werther’s candy from Karamell-Küche, Dark Chocolate Covered Caramels can hold you over until your next visit! Rich, buttery, and sweet, these caramels are made “with a super sweet and enchantingly chewy square of lightly salted, vanilla-tinged Caramel”, and then coated with a layer of dark chocolate. Delightfully bitter yet sweet, these treats go well with dessert boards or on their own. ©Trader Joe’s You can find these snacks and so much more on Trader Joe’s website, and continue to follow us here at the Disney Food Blog for all sorts of Disney World food tips, hacks, updates, reviews, and more! 13. A major airline change might not fix a lingering boarding problem. ©Southwest Airlines Southwest Airlines is ending its longtime open seating policy OFFICIALLY on January 27th, 2026, requiring passengers to acquire assigned seats. Additionally, the airline has ended its free checked bag policy while also requiring passengers who “encroach upon the neighboring seat’ to proactively purchase an additional ticket, which might not be refunded.” Of course, Southwest patrons aren’t thrilled with these changes, and they won’t be too happy with a boarding issue that could continue despite all these changes. Aisle Lice is a problem that plagues EVERY airline, annoying passengers and flight attendants alike. The term “Aisle Lice” essentially describes “eager” travelers who — the moment the aircraft comes to a stop and the seatbelt sign turns off — immediately grab their bags, force their way into the aisle, and generally just act super pushy until they can deplane. ©Getty Images The total lack of airplane etiquette and efficiency makes life harder for passengers who typically follow the airplane version of the zipper method (passengers exit row by row, front to back). Aisle lice slow the process down, create traffic and safety hazards, and can heighten tension with other passengers thanks to a lack of basic courtesy. Ultimately, assigned seating doesn’t fix this problem. Why do we suggest that? Well, most other airlines have assigned seating, and this is STILL a major issue plaguing the airplane experience. As long as flights are long, policies aren’t put into place, and passengers are impatient, we don’t see Southwest magically fixing the Aisle Lice epidemic. ©Southwest Airlines Then there’s the issue with Gate Lice — folks that hover around the boarding area way before their group is called. Historically speaking, Southwest has ALWAYS had a problem with this, and frankly, it’s not the airline’s fault. Like we previously mentioned, impatience can get the best of people, and they’ll swarm the boarding area well before it’s their time. Will assigned seating fix this? Maybe, but it’s still unlikely. Even with its open seating model, Southwest still assigned a boarding group and boarding number, meaning you still had a specific spot to line up in, and no amount of rushing to the gate lineup changes that. With that said, an assigned seat may ease the anxiety that can cause Gate Lice, but swarming a boarding group or an aisle isn’t a practice rooted in deep logic, so we won’t rule it out. Airport Of course, you always have to worry about Seat Squatters, who are passengers that take a seat that isn’t actually theirs, hoping no one will notice. This may be particularly common with Southwest during the initial rollout of assigned seating, and it might not be done intentionally either. If this happens, simply check your ticket and kindly talk to the other passenger. If conflict arises, notify a flight attendant. ©Southwest Airlines The moral of the story when flying with Southwest in the future is to practice patience and kindness. These changes are jarring for everyone — staff included. Additionally, now that you’re super familiar with Aisle Lice, Gate Lice, and Seat Squatters, you know how NOT to be one. We’re keeping up-to-date on all the latest travel trends and updates, so keep it posted right here at DFB to stay in the know. “Now They’ll Just Be Like Every Other Airline” — Travelers Have THOUGHTS on Southwest Boarding Process Change Join the DFB Newsletter to get all the breaking news right in your inbox! 14. The Disney Company is currently searching for its next Chief Executive Officer! ©Disney Disney’s current CEO, Bob Iger, has confirmed he will be stepping down from the position in 2026. The hunt for the next leader of the company has been “robust” with a few names leading the pack. As the time for the announcement draws closer, it seems like the search might be down to two names. We’ve been following every detail of the Disney Company for over 15 years, especially when it comes to the Disney Company’s CEO search. The hunt for the next big name in the company has been going on since 2023, when Disney confirmed that Bob Iger would stay on in the CEO position through 2026. The company confirmed in late 2024 that the name of the new CEO would be revealed early in 2026, and the time is finally drawing near. ©Disney We’ve been keeping our eye on four names leading the discussions, and now a new report from Bloomberg suggests that the company has narrowed it down to its final two. The new report suggests that of the four internal candidates, it’s now become a “two-horse race” between Josh D’Amaro and Dana Walden. Bob Iger with Josh D’Amaro ©Disney The other two names that were previously mentioned, ESPN head Jimmy Pitaro and Walt Disney Studios co-head Alan Bergman, are now considered “long shots” according to sources within the company. Throughout online discussions and rumors about the company discussion, D’Amaro and Walden were the top two contenders for a while, but according to the new report, one of them is the clear leader. ©Natacha Rafalski and Walt Disney Imagineering via Instagram According to Bloomberg, Bob Iger previously “bristled” at the idea of Josh D’Amaro as his likely successor, and he claimed no decision had been made. He continued to confirm he wasn’t a part of the succession committee’s planning, but this latest report suggests D’Amaro is the “CEO in waiting.” Josh D’Amaro at Destination D23, 2023 ©Disney This doesn’t come as a major surprise, thanks to previous reports from The Hollywood Reporter, which revealed that sources said D’Amaro was “now in pole position,” thanks to his work overseeing the $60 billion expansion of the parks and helping Disney expand into video games with Epic, which made the game Fortnite. D’Amaro also tends to be the face of announcements and media events for the company, making him the most public figure of the potential candidates. ©Disney via IAAPA Expo 2020 Presentation The other frontrunner, Dana Walden, recently made headlines due to her alleged involvement in Jimmy Kimmel’s “indefinite suspension,” according to Deadline. While there has been no word or implication that this impacts her chances at the CEO position, it is hard to assume it won’t be taken into consideration in one way or another. ©Disney Earlier in 2025, The Hollywood Reporter published a report on the “real-life Game of Thrones” power struggles happening right now in Hollywood, including Disney’s current search for its next leader. This search also comes after a CEO switch in 2019, which was considered by many a public failure, before Bob Iger returned to the position in 2022. The current search has been dubbed “the most watched succession game in town (and maybe the world).” Bob Iger ©New York Post To aid in the search, Disney hired James Gorman, chairman emeritus of Morgan Stanley, to oversee the selection process. No matter who takes on the mantle in 2026, they will be taking on some major projects, including a massive theme park expansion in California, a set of brand-new cruise ships, a massive overhaul of several areas in Disney World, a new addition in Disneyland Paris, and, most recently, a new theme park in Abu Dhabi. That isn’t even including anything outside of the Disney Parks and Experiences division, which the company has been leaning into heavily over the last few years, which also likely contributes to D’Amaro’s successorship. Kermit, Miss Piggy, and Josh D’Amaro at the 2023 Destination D23 fan convention. We’re eager to see who will be announced over the next few months and what spin they will put on the company as they head into the future. 15. Disney’s Animal Kingdom is one of the company’s most unique theme parks, offering live animal experiences and exclusive attractions not available at any of the company’s other resorts around the world. Tree of Life in Disney’s Animal Kingdom In fact, there aren’t too many places we would rather be than Animal Kingdom during a trip to Disney World most of the time. However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t cringey things that sometimes have us rethinking walking through the entrance. The Mean Pandora Plant If you have been personally victimized by this Pandora plant, you likely know exactly what we are talking about. There you are, minding your own business, admiring the beautiful world of Pandora, when WHAP! You are struck by a stream of water. In your startled state, you begin to wonder what just happened, and then you look over to see the gigantic Flaska Reclinata. That’s right, not only is this plant pretty huge, but you’d better watch out while you are walking by it because you might be targeted by its water stream. The plants are alive in Pandora! We actually looked up this plant to discover its name, and we also learned that it is one of the most important plants on Pandora. It actually helps to detoxify the atmosphere on Pandora, and the occasional puff of water and stream is the plant releasing the built-up pressure from absorbing toxic gases. While it plays a huge role on the planet of Pandora, we still feel a bit victimized by its outbursts. How Early the Park Closes Disney’s Animal Kingdom is a GORGEOUS park. Not only is there lots of wildlife to admire, but the amount of foliage inside the park is amazing. However, we hate how early this park closes most of the time. We love admiring the park during the day, but we can’t help but wish there were more days to explore it at night. Tree of Life at night Pandora looks absolutely stunning, and we could look at the Tree of Life for hours. Experiencing Animal Kingdom at night is wonderful! While park hours are constantly being adjusted, you will usually find that Disney’s Animal Kingdom is one of the first parks to close in the evening. Right now, the park has been closing at 6PM each night, which does not give you the opportunity to see the park at dark. Preparing the Corn Offsite The Harambe Food Market in Disney’s Animal Kingdom is home to the Grilled Corn on the Cob, and we have a bit of beef with this treat. We are huge fans of this snack, and while we still really enjoy it, Disney has moved this corn to being prepared off-site. The Corn on the Cob Previously, the corn was grilled right there in front of you at the stand, but now it is brought in and kept in a warming bag before being given out. It still tastes good, but it is not as good as it could be! There is something especially delicious about chowing down on a corn on the cob directly off the grill. While we will still be getting this treat, we will still be wishing it was grilled at the stand still. No More Onion Rings at Flame Tree BBQ On to another one of our food losses at Animal Kingdom. We are HUGE fans of the Baked Mac and Cheese with Pulled Pork at Flame Tree Barbecue. It is hard to beat creamy mac and cheese, topped with coleslaw, pulled pork, barbecue sauce, and fried onions. The only thing that could make it better would be replacing the fried onions with onion rings! Well, that used to be the case at Flame Tree BBQ. Pulled Pork Mac and Cheese with Fried Onions The Pulled Pork Mac and Cheese used to be served with onion rings on top instead of the fried onions. Don’t get it wrong, we still look forward to getting the Pulled Pork Mac and Cheese, but we feel like it is missing an important component. Pulled Pork Mac and Cheese with Onion Rings The fried onions still lend a nice texture, but it is missing some of the flavor. We are still secretly hoping for the return of the onion rings! Replacing DinoLand, U.S.A. Last but not least, we are still working through our feelings on the replacement of DinoLand, U.S.A. DinoLand U.S.A. has been an iconic part of Animal Kingdom for years, and we are definitely going to miss visiting this area. How else are we going to help save the dino? DinoLand, U.S.A. DinoLand U.S.A. is going to be replaced by a Tropical Americas-themed land called Pueblo Esperanza. It will feature three attractions, including an Indiana Jones ride, an Encanto ride, and a carousel. Not only that, but it will also feature one of the largest quick-service restaurants at Disney World. There is a lot to look forward to, but we will also be mourning the loss of DinoLand U.S.A., too. ©Disney While there may be some minor inconveniences in Disney’s Animal Kingdom, there is no doubt we will be returning to this park time and time again and will have an amazing time! There is so much to explore in this park and so much beauty to admire. From experiencing a safari on Kilimanjaro Safaris, to riding on top of a banshee on Avatar Flight of Passage, or exploring the Maharajah Jungle Trek, we can’t get enough of Animal Kingdom. 17. Would folks like to design a skateboard, bang a drum, pretend to be a weather forecaster or virtually explore Mars? Or would they rather study up on geometric properties, fractions, statistics, variables and algebra? The newly installed “2theXtreme” exhibit at Orlando Science Center takes those first activities then craftily spotlights mathematical properties. “They do a really good job of giving you an experience and then showing you how math plays a part in this,” said Jeff Stanford, vice president of marketing for the science center. “It’s showing the hidden math in everything,” said Zachary Mailhot, science program specialist. Among the first stops seen in “2theXtreme” is a snowboard experience called Boardercross, where visitors stand on a pivoting board and use angles and torque to fly over on-screen obstacles in a race. “It’s active, it’s colorful, it’s hands-on,” Stanford said. “There are opportunities for all ages, parents and kids doing things together, kids on their own, teens, adults.” Jeff and Connie Light and their grandsons, pose in the Style Revolution station, which uses freeze-motion technology to capture a photo from multiple angles. (Rich Pope/Orlando Sentinel) In the center of the exhibit space is Style Revolution, a 360-degree photo shoot with 20 cameras that mixes geometry with red-carpet award show vibes. “It feels very glitzy, glammy, but it’s accessible,” Mailhot said. A finished in-the-round image is emailed to participants. Amateur meteorologists can interpret weather data then record a weather alert video backed by a green screen. Among the other exhibit kiosks are forays into computer security, the pitches and frequency of music and mixing, building skyscrapers and competitive bicycling as a way of learning about distance, time and speed. The 40 exhibits of “2theXtreme” was produced by Evergreen Exhibitions. “It was out on tour for almost 10 years, and now it’s been refurbished,” Stanford said. “They took some exhibits that were working really well for them, then they added some new experiences. Everything got a facelift. We’re one of the few venues to get it after it’s refurb.” The exhibit, included with regular Orlando Science Center admission, will remain in place through Jan. 5. For more information, go to OSC.org. The Kinsey family configures tiles on a light table into patterns in the Tessellations activity, part of '2TheXtreme' exhibit at Orlando Science Center. 18. A recent Disney Springs outing designed to taste-test the Halloween offerings at Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar came with a few newsy little distractions, resulting in updates from Starbucks, Cirque du Soleil and the incoming LEVEL99 attraction that was announced earlier this year. Over 99 The prime visible progress on LEVEL99 is a jumbo video screen above the future entrance to the former home of the NBA Experience. It features fast-paced glimpses of LEVEL99 attractions, including the swinging Axe Run. (That looks fun and also gives off “Tangled” float vibes from Magic Kingdom’s Festival of Fantasy parade.) The PR team for the company said this screen is a way for folks to familiarize themselves with the LEVEL99 concept, and that there could be updates concerning the two-story, 45,000-square-foot space in the coming months. When the attraction was announced in February, CEO Matthew DuPlessie told the Orlando Sentinel that the experience was built around unique games presenting mental and physical challenges with teamwork. Its current locations have about 60 games that take between one and four minutes. “It’s a wide variety of challenges where you don’t know what to expect in the next one,” DuPlessie said. “You might be in a ninja-training dojo in one room and then move into a hall of mirrors art installation in a different room and then you’re up in outer space in the next room.” A video display touts the coming of LEVEL99 attraction, which will be in the West Side neighborhood of Disney Springs, in the building that previously was home to NBA Experience. (Dewayne Bevil/Orlando Sentinel) There will also be food and drink options in there, including Detroit-style pizza and, according to the Disney Springs website, a two-story bar. Current LEVEL99 locations are in Natick, Massachusetts; Providence, Rhode Island; and Tysons, Virginia. The Disney Springs location in the West Side neighborhood of the complex was home to NBA Experience, which closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and never reopened. The area is also where DisneyQuest stood, although that building was demolished in 2017. No timeline has ever been announced for the next LEVEL, so it’s OK to be anxious – but less OK to be angry. The interior of the large Starbucks store at Disney Springs has been given a new look. (Dewayne Bevil/Orlando Sentinel) Starbucks redux Disney Springs’ West Side Starbucks has reopened, reinvigorating a nice, air-conditioned place to revive. Its basic layout remains. There’s a large room with the ordering queue and products, a big sitting room with tables, plus a smallish patio that faces the lake and balloon attraction. Fresh additions include a wildlife mural in the first room featuring birds and a large tiger head. The mobile order pick-up station has been moved and enlarged. The seating configuration in the second room has been changed, and the long group table in the corner is gone. A jungle-driven mural surrounds the wall of windows. Long gone is the touch-screen connection to the Starbucks at Downtown Disney in Anaheim, California. The pandemic made that too touchy years ago. Sign of Cirque Cirque du Soleil has added a sign for its “Drawn to Life” show on the West Side. It’s blue and blends in with the styling of the tent-inspired roof. But it stands out from the walkway, and that’s its job, right? Architectural purists probably are displeased, but at least the sign isn’t very visible from the roadway. The theatrical production has started selling tickets for 2026 dates through Oct. 3. The show goes on twice daily, Tuesdays through Saturdays, plus two Sunday matinees. The Page to Stage Signature Experience, which includes a backstage tour, will continue to be an option five nights a week after the second show. For tickets and more information, go to cirquedusoleil/com/drawn-to-life. Phantom Dumplings are part of the seasonal menu of Jock Lindsey's Hangar Bar at Disney Springs. (Dewayne Bevil/Orlando Sentinel) Jock-o’-lantern alert Finally, we had the Halloween experience at Jock Lindsey’s. The interior decor is retro, but shiny, and maybe a blend of Christmas vibe with Mardi Gras. Let’s just call it black-cat festive. Along with its regular menu, there are a handful of seasonal, themed offerings on the food and beverage side. The Cauldron Cooler (gin, ginger liqueur, simple syrup) is served in a beaker. Customers get to do the last bit of mixing themselves, which prompts the drink to change color. Less flashy is the Spike Trap (rum, vodka, coconut, Sprite), which has a floating ghost marshmallow on top. Mine eventually was doing the backstroke, which seems appropriate for a rum and vodka combo. Some of the food choices come in spooky containers like a casket. Our Phantom Dumplings were on a stick and wrapped in rice paper for another floating effect. Zombie Eye Bites – a form of deviled eggs – were messy but in a way that you want to lick the bowl. Spoiler alert: If you order the Alien Invader Sliders, do not tell the cook to hold the olives and pickles. They’re part of the visual fun (and easily removed, too). Be aware: It’s a hot Halloween ticket, and the Hangar Bar doesn’t take reservations. We arrived at 5:30 p.m. on a weekday and all tables were taken, so we decamped to the outdoor bar. When we left an hour later, there were six parties queued up outside. Email me at dbevil@orlandosentinel.com. BlueSky: @themeparksdb. Threads account: @dbevil. X account: @themeparks. 19. If you’re heading on a cruise this year, you might want to take some extra caution when it comes to your health and safety. ©Royal Caribbean This year, there have been multiple sickness outbreaks on cruises, and now, another is being added to the list. In the latest news, more than 90 passengers and crew members on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship have fallen ill with norovirus. The Independent reports that the Royal Caribbean ship The Serenade of the Seas has had a norovirus outbreak, with 94 passengers and crew members reporting being ill during the voyage. The ship departed San Diego on September 19th, and the outbreak was reported to the CDC ahead of the ship’s final stop in Miami. ©Royal Caribbean The main symptoms of the illness are vomiting and diarrhea, with additional possible symptoms of muscle ache, headache, abdominal cramps, or fever. Less than 4% of the total people on board were affected, as the ship had 1,874 passengers and 883 crew. In response to the sickness, the crew members on board have increased cleaning procedures and isolated those who are sick. ©Royal Caribbean | Star of the Seas “The health and safety of our guests, crew, and the communities we visit are our top priority,” Royal Caribbean told USA Today. “To maintain an environment that supports the highest levels of health and safety onboard our ships, we implement rigorous cleaning procedures, many of which far exceed public health guidelines,” the cruise liner said. Enchantment of the Seas (Left) and Mariner of the Seas (Right) This case is the 19th gastrointestinal outbreak on a cruise ship so far this year. Of that group, 14 outbreaks were norovirus. Norovirus also caused 15 outbreaks on cruise ships in 2024. So if you’re sailing soon, make sure to wash your hands often and be cautious — nobody wants to spend their vacation sick!
