What an amazing year it has been! Disney’s Animal Kingdom is seeing unprecedented growth – and I don’t mean the park expansion. I mean baby animals! We have enjoyed quite a baby boom at Disney’s Animal Kingdom during the last year. Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge and the Seas with Nemo & Friends have also seen a number of births. Everyone loves to see baby animals, right? So, we thought we would close this year’s Wildlife Wednesday series with just a handful of the baby animals that joined our family this year. Beginnings can be an exciting time, and I am embarking on one myself. I have decided to retire following an 18-year Disney career. It has been an absolute pleasure and honor to share with you these stories of conservation projects, education, the environment, science, nature and the animals that bring so much joy to our lives. It has been a privilege to work with the Disney company, and I am so proud of the work Disney does to care for animals here and around the world. Mark Penning, Ph.D., someone you have heard from many times in this Wildlife Wednesday series, will lead the team in my place. I know his stories will continue to inspire and enlighten. There are just a few days left to enjoy the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, which will have its last run on January 3, 2016. Learn About: Toy Story Pizza PlanetDisney's Hollywood Studios Disney World RestaurantsThe final year of this well-loved holiday lights display coincides with construction for entire new lands coming to Hollywood Studios. Perhaps you’ve heard of a little film franchise called Star Wars? Yep, its getting a land of its own, along with Toy Story Land on the way as well. While that’s not exactly “new news” anymore, the fact that Toy Story Pizza Planet is closing for a lengthy refurbishment may come as a surprise to some guests visiting Hollywood Studios in the new year. According to wdwmagic.com, Pizza Planet will begin a major refurbishment on January 19, 2016, which will last late into the year. And, indeed, no times are available for Pizza Planet starting January 19th on the Walt Disney World website. These rumors certainly make sense, given the future of Toy Story Land. Reopening a new and improved Pizza Planet in the upcoming land could result in a more immersive experience. Toy Story Pizza Planet To clarify, none of these rumors have been confirmed by Disney. Still, it’s always fun to daydream, isn’t it? New restaurants open, one closes (to reopen in 2016) – here are 15 top Walt Disney World culinary stories for 2015. Up next: 16 for 2016. Starting in March, the Outdoor Kitchens expanded at Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival. It was the third year for the culinary addition at the festival, with the new Botanas Botánico Outdoor Kitchen between France and Morocco pavilions with treats like cachapas with farmer’s cheese, a sweet yellow corn pancake, and seafood ceviche with shrimp, scallops and grouper with mango and avocado. Also in March, the new breakfast started at Be Our Guest Restaurant in Magic Kingdom. The quick-service breakfast menu has a decidedly French touch, with everything from assorted cured meat and cheese served with marmalade, fresh fruit and a toasted baguette to eggs Florentine served in a puff pastry shell with country ham and roasted plum tomatoes. Late March saw the opening of Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort. It’s a popular spot, and guests ooh and ah over more than 1,200 pieces of memorabilia. The hand-crafted cocktails are delicious (order an Uh-Oa! and see what happens with the special effects). Beginning April 1, new allergy-friendly menus debuted in 2015 at more than 100 quick-service and table-service locations at Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort, along with more ways to make the special-diet-request process easier. In May, the much-anticipated Harambe Market opened at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, where food plays a starring role with African-inspired street food at four walk-up windows and plenty of shaded seating. Skewered chicken and kabob flatbreads, beef and pork sausage fried in a curried corn batter (like a corn dog), spice-rubbed karubi ribs and South African wines are a home run. Or try tikka masala chicken, the newest addition to the menu. April saw the opening of The BOATHOUSE, the first all-new dining spot at Disney Springs – not a bad view in the house with all of the dining rooms with waterfront views or on the water. Seafood is the star (try the lobster roll). Then take a ride in the dream boats from the 1930s, ‘40s and ‘50s (or watch for free from the dock). The new Ferrytale Wishes, A Fireworks Dessert Cruise, debuted in September, the perfect way to experience the Magic Kingdom fireworks from a spot on Seven Seas Lagoon. The decks are laden with delectable sweets, plenty of ice cream and beverages (with and without alcohol) in souvenir glow glasses. Enjoy this sweet ending to your day, then settle to watch the spectacular Wishes nighttime spectacular overhead, the largest fireworks display ever at Walt Disney World Resort. 20th Epcot International Food & Wine Festival expands for first time into Future World (Sept. 25-Nov. 16) with four new food and beverage marketplaces. Starting along the Rose Walk between Future World and World Showcase, the new Artistry of Wine & Cheese festival area featured the Cheese Studio (offering a cheese sampler to pair with wines) and Wine Studio with premium wines on tap. The new Next Eats area included Sustainable Chew and Chew Lab marketplaces inspired by ABC’s Emmy-Award® winning lifestyle series “The Chew.” Late September was the opening of the much-anticipated Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar along the waterfront at Disney Springs. With 150 seats inside and out, the bar cleverly features salvaged equipment, spare airplane parts and mementos from Jock’s travels. For the first time ever, “The Chew,” ABC’s Emmy-Award® winning daytime show, broadcasted from the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival October 7-9. Hosts Mario Batali, Michael Symon, Clinton Kelly and Carla Hall filmed segments across Walt Disney World Resort in addition to taping before a live audience. Episodes aired October 12-16, 2015. Minnie’s Seasonal Dine added to Hollywood & Vine at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. With five distinct dining experiences depending on the season, including Minnie’s Silver Screen Dine, Minnie’s Springtime Dine, Minnie’s Summertime Dine, Minnie’s Halloween Dine, and Minnie’s Holiday Dine. Festive new costumes and seasonally themed eats make this dinner fun for the whole family. Morimoto Asia also opened in November, the newest to join the line-up at Disney Springs. It’s the newest venture for Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto, and his first restaurant featuring Pan-Asian cuisine, including the signature Morimoto Peking Duck, carved and roasted in house. New Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. Skipper Canteen opened in December in the Magic Kingdom. Diners can set off on a culinary adventure at a new eatery in Adventureland featuring “World Famous Jungle Cuisine.” Just steps from the legendary Jungle Cruise attraction you can enjoy the bold, flavorful tastes of Asia, South America and Africa at this new 222-seat table-service restaurant staffed by the wisecracking crew of the Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. The Ganachery opened in December at Disney Springs, a jewel box of a shop that’s showcases the beauty of chocolate. The star of the show is a custom-made ganache, Disney’s own recipe for a luxurious mixture of melted chocolate and cream. Stepping inside this shop is reminiscent of an apothecary of another era, a lovely little space elevates sweets to an experience akin to a wine tasting. Victoria & Albert’s at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa ends the year on a high note by winning the coveted AAA Five-Diamond Award – that’s 16 years in a row, putting the restaurant in an exclusive tier of dining experiences. Each year AAA reviews nearly 30,000 restaurants, but just 0.4 percent make the AAA Five Diamond. It’s been another unforgettable year at Disney Parks, and our Creative Entertainment team has had a blast producing amazing new entertainment experiences for you to enjoy. In fact, the team has been so busy, this year’s Top 5 had to be expanded to a Top 10! Disneyland Resort Diamond Celebration – Celebrating the 60th anniversary of the original Disneyland park was far and away the biggest event of the year, bringing with it the debut of three new nighttime spectaculars: “Disneyland Forever” fireworks, “World of Color – Celebrate!” and the award-winning “Paint the Night” parade. “Tangled: The Musical” – This terrific stage adaptation of the tale of Rapunzel and Flynn Rider, a Disney Cruise Line exclusive complete with three new songs from Composer Alan Menken, premiered on the Disney Magic in November. “Inside Out” – Riley’s Emotions from the Disney•Pixar hit “Inside Out” made their Disney Parks debut last summer at Disney California Adventure park, arriving on a pre-parade float designed to look like Headquarters from the film. Later in the year, Joy and Sadness made their way to Hong Kong Disneyland, where they appeared in a limited-time character greeting experience. More “Frozen” Fun – Anna, Elsa and Olaf were as popular as ever in 2015, traveling the world to bring a bit of Arendelle to Disney’s kingdoms on three continents. Unique “Frozen” entertainment experiences included sing-along celebrations, playgrounds with real snow, processionals through the parks and deck parties on Disney Cruise Line. Tokyo Disneyland Electrical Parade “Dreamlights” – This popular nighttime parade at Tokyo Disney Resort received an upgrade last summer, with an all-new “Tangled” float and seven other floats that were enhanced with dazzling new technological features. King Triton’s Concert – In the spring, Mermaid Lagoon Theater at Tokyo DisneySea saw the debut of this award-winning musical show that combines dynamic performances with puppetry, projections, Audio-Animatronics and special effects. Halloween – The Halloween season was bigger than ever at Disney Parks in 2015, with new shows opening around the world. The headliner was “Hocus Pocus Villain Spelltacular” at Magic Kingdom Park, starring the inimitable Sanderson Sisters. Other shows included “It’s Good to be Bad” with the Disney Villains at Disneyland Paris, “The Villains’ World” on Mediterranean Harbor at Tokyo DisneySea and several “Lost in Ghost Town” experiences as part of Haunted Halloween at Hong Kong Disneyland. Hong Kong Disneyland 10th Anniversary – Hong Kong Disneyland also marked their 10th anniversary this year, kicking off a year-long “Happily Ever After” celebration with the newly enhanced “Disney in the Stars” fireworks spectacular and the delightful new stage show, “Mickey and the Wondrous Book.” Sunset Showcase – An all-new entertainment venue opened this fall at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, designed to host a variety of different experiences over time. The premier engagement at Sunset Showcase is Club Disney, a super fun hangout filled with music, dancing, Disney characters and more. A special evening event, Club Villain, comes to the Sunset Showcase starting January 16, and more plans are in the works for the future. “Star Wars” – The Force has awakened at Disney Parks with the openings of Star Wars Launch Bay and “Jedi Training: Trials of the Temple” at both Disneyland park and Disney’s Hollywood Studios. 2016 is nearly upon us, and so we find ourselves looking back at all that 2015 had to offer. It’s been an exciting time, full of huge announcements about new venues and attractions and lots of progress on previously announced projects. Before we bid goodbye to one year and welcome a new one, let’s review where we’ve been and see a glimpse of what’s to come! Star Wars Lands Coming to Both Coasts — And It’s Bringing Lots of Food From a Galaxy Far, Far AwayThere was a HUGE disturbance in the Force — the Disney Force, that is — this summer when Disney announced that Star Wars Land would be coming to both Disneyland AND Walt Disney World. The crowds went wild! Star Wars Land Concept Art ©Disney But, of course, our first question was, “Super! But what are we going to eat there?” While details remain scarce about food offerings in the new Lands, we do know that they will feature Cantinas. And we suspect that this venue will bear more than a passing resemblance to its namesake in the films. Cantina Concept Art. Copyright Disney. Fortunately they aren’t making us wait until the attractions open to speculate about what the food might look like. We are already getting plenty of looks at Star Wars-inspired food, thanks to a couple of spots that have already served themed fare. Hollywood Studios restaurant Hollywood and Vine has featured foods from the Star Wars universe at their Jedi Mickey’s Star Wars Dine, as has Sci-Fi Dine-In at the Star Wars Galactic Dine-In Breakfast. Jedi Mickey at Star Wars Jedi Mickey Character Dinner Star Wars Desserts at Hollywood and Vine We’ve also seen Blue Milkshakes pop up at 50s Prime Time Cafe and Min and Bill’s as well as Blue Ice Cream! Blue Milk Shake Aunt Beru’s Blue Milk Ice Cream Even though it’s been announced that Star Wars Weekends will be on hiatus for now, a look back at the food options from 2015 is still fun, and may foreshadow what we see in the future. We saw the addition of Rebel Hangar this past spring, as half of Backlot Express was transformed into the intergalactic hangout. Intriguing Star Wars-themed decor surrounded, and dishes ran the gamut from Chips and Sith to Yoda Key Lime Cake. The spot proved to be so popular that they started taking Advance Dining Reservations. Sith hummus Yoda Key Lime cake Disneyland hasn’t been left out of the fun. There, we’ve enjoyed a new menu at Galactic Grill, which has been introduced as part of the Season of the Force celebration. With specials like the First Order Burger and Jedi Order Chicken Sandwich, you can’t go wrong! First Order Burger from Disneyland’s Galactic Grill Not to be outdone, Disney’s Hollywood Studios has also introduced menu items celebrating Season of the Force at Backlot Express. Try Corellian Spice Fries, Padawan Dark Side Chicken And Waffles, or save room for a Blue Panna Cotta! Chicken Tenders In The Padawan Dark Side Chicken And Waffles Of course, with this incredible announcement (along with the announcement that Toy Story Land would also be coming soon), we knew we’d have to bid farewell to a few things. In 2015, as we celebrate the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights and say goodbye to this incredible display, which has become a tradition in its own right for many guests. We Say Goodbye to a Holiday Favorite And at Disneyland, Big Thunder Ranch BBQ will reportedly close permanently in January 2016. Disneyland’s Diamond Celebration — And It’s Still Going Strong!Disneyland, the Park That Started It All, also marked its own very special milestone in 2015, as we celebrated the Park’s 60th Anniversary. Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle Sports new Bling for the 60th The Diamond Celebration, which kicked off in May, is still going strong. And our favorite way to salute this special spot is with a beautiful array of special snacks and treats, of course! Disney has made a new tradition of a 24-hour celebration to kick off summer for the last couple of years. And in 2015, the Diamond Celebration served as the focal point for the West Coast Party. Close Up of Disneyland Mickey Mouse Cake Pop I spent a glorious 24 hours (no joke, actually 24 hours of Disney awesomeness) eating, partying, and enjoying the attractions at Disneyland. Dining in Disneyland columnist Heather was along for the fun, and we had an AMAZING time! We enjoyed special drinks at Jolly Holiday, and even enjoyed a few extra treats along the way! We look forward to celebrating for the rest of the year, and for many many years to come! New Life Comes to Magic Kingdom’s AdventurelandOne part of Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom has received a good bit of attention in 2015, and that’s Adventureland. Rumors swirled forever that the land would be getting a table service restaurant. For a while, we were hearing that the new spot would be Princess and the Frog-themed. (Think Tiana’s.) But then, the rumors solidified around a fact almost to good to be true: a new restaurant was on the way, and it would be exactly what we’d hoped for — Jungle Cruise in nature! Jungle Skipper Canteen Sign Jungle Navigation Co., Ltd. Skipper Canteen is born. The Jungle Navigation Co., Ltd. Skipper Canteen (or Skipper Canteen for short) is officially open now. We’ve had our very first look around the spot as well as a FULL review! As usual, the attention to detail is incredible here. Longtime fans of Jungle Cruise will see lots of references to the ride — and the running gags. Crew’s Mess Hall in Skipper Canteen The menu also represents a clear departure for the normal Magic Kingdom food, with a heavy emphasis on Asian, South American, and African cuisine. We especially love the S.E.A. Shu Mai! S.E.A. Shu Mai And no meal is complete without a Punch Line Punch or a Schweitzer Slush. Schweitzer Slush in Souvenir Mug But be sure to save room for dessert. The Coconut Bar with Pineapple-Basil Compote and Vanilla Cream is our favorite! Aloha Isle and Sunshine Tree Terrace Pull a Switcheroo. In the months leading up to the big reveal about Skipper Canteen, we also heard a few rumors that Aloha Isle would be closing to make room for the new restaurant. Aloha Isle Closing? Say It Isn’t So! The rumors started when Dole Whips joined Citrus Swirls on the menu at Sunshine Tree Terrace. But the rumors turned out to be unfounded, even though something interesting did happen — Aloha Isle and Sunshine Tree Terrace switched places. The Old Switcheroo At press time, both continue to be in operation, and we haven’t heard that anything would be changing soon. Downtown Disney Officially Becomes Disney Springs — And the Major Updates and Announcements ContinueWe’ve been reporting on the changes at Disney Springs for a while now — the news of the eventual re-branding first surfaced in 2013 — but in 2015, the vision finally began to take shape when the official name change happened. Downtown Disney Map We continue to see progress of the transformation, making it seem as though Disney’s anticipated completion date of sometime in 2016 will be accurate. In the meantime, let’s look back at all the ginormous changes that have taken place. We’ll also review some of the announcements that give us a vision of what we can still look forward to. Erin McKenna’s Bakery NYC. We kicked off the year with confirmation of a rumor that had swirled for ages. When BabyCakes NYC first closed in 2014, we had a suspicion that the move was temporary. We weren’t too far into 2015 before our guess was confirmed, and Erin McKenna’s Bakery NYC opened! Erin McKenna’s Bakery NYC Cupcake Case The spot specializes in allergy-friendly, vegan baked goods, offering goodies in their storefront, but also providing specialty cakes at venues throughout Walt Disney World. BOATHOUSE. We also looked forward to welcoming the BOATHOUSE, a restaurant themed as more than just a spot to grab dinner. The Boathouse The new eatery also features a raw bar where walk-up patrons can enjoy a drink and a bar menu that’s heavy on seafood. Raw Bar The restaurant itself features steaks, chops, and a variety of seafood. We’ve enjoyed lunch and dinner here, and so far we give the edge to the former. Gibsons “Sandwich King” Burger Hop Champion But there’s also an entertainment component here. In addition to dining, BOATHOUSE also offers rides in iconic Amphicars — vehicles which start out on land before launching into the Village Lake. You will pay extra for these, though. A LOT extra. One of the Captains Taking an Amphicar for a Spin Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar. One of the most highly anticipated openings of the year came when we learned about Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar. And the coolest thing is we didn’t have to wait long. Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar There had been speculation about what the structure, which stands adjacent to BOATHOUSE, would become. The boat seemingly in dry-dock next to it definitely threw us for a bit. But when the announcement came that the bar would pay homage to the Indiana Jones franchise, everything made sense! Our first visit to the spot when it opened was promising. We enjoyed many (MANY) of the custom cocktails, like the Bedtime Story. Bedtime Story And the food was pretty interesting too, as dishes like the sweet and spicy Lao Che’s Revenge Wings caught our attention. And the dry-dock boat? Reggie Boat Seating Turned out to be some of the best seating in (or rather, outside) the house! Named for Jock’s pet snake, Reggie, this is an awesome place to relax a bit. Morimoto Asia. But few spots were more highly anticipated than Morimoto Asia. The opening took place on September 30, and we were there the very first day! Morimoto Asia There was tons of speculation about whether or not the man himself, Chef Masaharu Morimoto, would be on hand for the opening. And he was! The restaurant, which features a Pan-Asian approach with dishes such as the Tuna Pizza and the Morimoto Peking Duck, has been well received thus far. Tuna Pizza We enjoyed the incredible array of Sake options, and loved cocktails as well, like the White Lily. You can see all of this and more in our full review. I look forward to dining here again soon! Joffrey’s Tea Trader’s Cafe. Another highly anticipated spot in Disney Springs arrived this summer, as Joffrey’s Tea Trader’s Cafe opened its doors. Joffrey’s Tea Trader’s Cafe While both Starbucks and Joffreys have upped the coffee game in all of Disney by giving java drinkers a better quality cup, it was still nice to see tea get its due too. A visit to Joffrey’s Tea Trader’s Cafe is an exploration in the popular beverage. Enjoy special tea ceremonies, talk to tea smiths, or just grab a drink (frozen, iced, or hot) to go, along with a pastry. Iced Teas And don’t forget to check out teas for purchase to take home with you. The Ganachery. Boutique goods and “buying local” are all the rage these days, and Disney is capitalizing on that trend in Disney Springs. While they’re bringing you tastes from all over the world, they’re also showcasing their very own “local” talent at The Ganachery. The Ganachery Storefront The little shop comes complete with an interesting backstory that the space was once an apothecary, and now serves as a chocolaterie. You’ll find custom ganache creations, plus lots of prepackaged goodies to take home. Box of 6 Ganache Squares If you’re a chocolate lover, this is the place to be. Dockside Margaritas. Another spot with local flair is Dockside Margaritas. Located in the Marketplace section of Disney Springs, the stand has been around for a while, but in 2015 it received a refresh. Dockside Margaritas at Disney Springs Marketplace Along with a facelift and expanded seating, the space now emphasizes Florida flavors. Orange Grove Rum Runner — Up Close Head here in the evening to enjoy live music on Dockside’s patio as you sip on refreshing cocktails and mocktails. Vivoli Il Gelato. If you prefer frozen treats with an international flair, you’ll be interested in another new spot that opened in 2015 — Vivoli Il Gelato. With the original shop in Florence — yep, that’s Italy, folks — you can bet that the gelato that you’re getting here is the real deal. Vivoli il Gelato Rice Pudding Gelato Owner Silvana Vivoli, the granddaughter of the shop’s original order, stays true to authentic flavors, like Pistachio. And while you’re there, give the Rice Pudding Gelato a try! And there’s more to come! Even though a ton has already happened, it seems that’s just the tip of the iceberg! In addition to all of these openings, announcements were made about several other coming attractions. Look for more news soon about other new restaurants, like STK and The Edison. STK Concept Art There will also be new eateries helmed by celebrity chefs Rick Bayless and Art Smith. And we’re intrigued by teasers confirming Neverland Tunnels and Walt’s Restaurant. Cupcake lovers are excited about Sprinkles Cupcakes. And we are definitely excited to see the newly-reimagined Planet Hollywood. Lots of Updates to Animal KingdomAnother corner of Walt Disney World that’s getting lots of attention these days is Animal Kingdom. The park has always been a “half day” experience to many Disney guests, especially since the animals who serve as the park’s main attractions are not available for exhibit into the evening. But with two major announcements — Avatarland and the Rivers of Light spectacular — seem designed to extend that park’s hours past nightfall. Rivers of Light at Disney’s Animal Kingdom We believe that many of the expanded offerings that we’re seeing are as a result of these coming changes. In 2015, Starbucks completed its pledge to bring stores to every Disney park as the final outlet opened in the Creature Comforts space near the entrance of Africa. (You can check out a photo tour here.) Creature Comforts Starbucks Entrance Harambe Market provided a much-needed expansion to counter service options in the park, and Animal Kingdom finally opened its very own confectionary, Zuri’s Sweets Shop. Zuris Sweets Shop — Outside View Solid Chocolate Mickeys from Zuri’s Sweets Shop Beloved favorites were shown some love as well; Dawa Bar, long one of our favorite spots to celebrate happy hour, received some nice menu updates. African Bloody Mary As the year is coming to an end, we’re already seeing what’s on the horizon for 2016. Existing kiosks and stands are being rebranded with new names and logos. For instance, you’ll find The Smiling Crocodile where you once enjoyed The Garden Kiosk. Thirsty River Bar and Trek Snacks opened in the Asia section of the park, and offers an interesting selection of counter service eats. Banh Mi Sandwich And we’re definitely excited to bring you more details about Animal Kingdom’s very first signature restaurant, Tiffin’s, when it opens next year. R.I.P. Plastic CheeseBut few things made as many waves this year in the DFB home office than the announcement that Plastic Cheese would be no more at Walt Disney World. Plastic Cheese Not familiar with the concept? It’s simple really. You know that wonderful cheese sauce that you just know in your heart has very little to do with actual cheese — but you can’t help yourself? Yah. That. (For even more details, read this homage.) We can’t help loving the golden delicious condiment. We’ve smothered and dipped everything into it that we can get our hands on — Fries, Corn Dog Nuggets, and Tortilla Chips to name a few of our favorites. Dipping French Fry in Plastic Cheese! To think, at the beginning of 2015, it still flowed freely from pumps at our favorite condiment bars, like Pecos Bill’s, Cosmic Ray’s, and Casey’s Corner. Thank goodness we’ve found a few notable favorites to replace it. And even better, items like the Irish Vintage Cheese and Bacon Dip at Cookes of Dublin and Raglan Road, and the incredible Fondue at Territory Lounge are actually both real cheese. Irish Cheese and Bacon Dip with Skinny Chips Like really real. So everybody wins. Continued Commitment to Serving Guests with Food Allergies and SensitivitiesDisney has often been heralded as a leader when it comes to serving guests with food allergies, sensitivities, and those who follow an alternative diet. In 2015, we continued to see that commitment deepen across the company. Allergy-Friendly Kiosk Menu at Disney’s Animal Kingdom In part, Disney has acted as a bit of an umbrella, welcoming other companies committed to this focus. With Erin McKenna’s Bakery NYC getting its own standalone spot at Disney Springs, guests who have diet sensitivities and allergies have a place where it’s “safe” to eat nearly everything. But McKenna’s bakery also offers specialty cakes for celebrations all over Walt Disney World. Mocha Brownie Cupcake from Erin McKenna’s Bakery NYC Chocolate and sweets shop Ghirardelli has also signaled its commitment to serving guests with allergies. In April, we brought you news that the shops, located in both Disneyland and Walt Disney World, would no longer offer peanut products. We Say Goodbye to the Gold Rush Sundae at Ghirardelli Disney’s Animal Kingdom also signaled its position as a leader among the parks in this area in 2014 with the addition of the Allergy Kiosk. This year, the kiosk received a name change to Terra Treats, and it looks like it will be a permanent fixture in the expanding park. Finally, while Disney has offered alternative snacks for guests with allergies and sensitivities in the past, they now have Disney-branded snacks that meet these criteria. Snacks With Character Allergy Friendly Snack Look for Snacks with Character at retail spots throughout the parks and resorts. Popcorn Frenzy and an Update to the Official Disney PopcornPopcorn is always a big story at Disney, but this year, it continued to grow in popularity. Check out the flavored popcorn options we found at Epcot this year. SO good! Gourmet Flavored Popcorn Options We’ve always seen its status as a bit of a frenzy in Tokyo Disneyland, but now the craze has fully bloomed stateside. Disney is courting this love in big ways with tons of seasonal popcorn buckets. We can’t get enough of this Mickey Balloon Popcorn Bucket, a special to celebrate Disneyland’s 60th Anniversary! Disneyland Balloon Popcorn Bucket But seasonal options during the holidays, buckets celebrating beloved attractions, and themed buckets to mark classics (think Star Wars!) are also very popular with collectors. Han Solo in Carbonite Popcorn Bucket In other popcorn news, Pop Secret was named the official Disney popcorn during 2015. The move was met with outcry from many hardcore popcorn fans, but at the end of the day, it appears that the company only provides the kernels, so the flavors should be similar to what was available before. River Belle Terrace Announces ChangesLate this year, we also received some news that a Disneyland breakfast legend would be changing things up a bit. You’ve seen it right here — one of our absolute favorite breakfast spots in Disneyland has been River Belle Terrace. River Belle Terrace We’ve loved it for some of its iconic dishes, like the Mickey Pancake and Cinnamon Roll French Toast. Cinnamon Roll French Toast But it also offers beautiful views and a serene way to start your day at this busy park. And it gets extra points for being a favorite breakfast stop of Walt Disney himself. It was recently announced that River Belle Terrace will be changing from counter service to table service, and that the restaurant will serve only lunch and dinner. Rancho del Zocalo will fill the counter service breakfast void left by River Belle Terrace, and will even offer some of the spot’s most famous dishes. Disneyland Rancho del Zocalo We’re still going to miss enjoying our eggs with that beautiful view, though. Restaurants Announce Expansions to ServiceFinally, 2015 has seen an unprecedented number of Walt Disney World restaurants expand their hours into previously unchartered territory. Across the resort, lounges like Territory Lounge in Wilderness Lodge have begun hours as an early morning coffee spot. Stop by the Coffee Shop And this fall, two signature restaurants have announced that they would begin serving brunch. Both Narcoossee’s and California Grill will offer prix fixe meals on Sundays; Narcoossee’s has already begun while California Grill’s Brunch at the Top rolls out next February. Shrimp and Grits at California Grill’s Brunch at the Top On the character dining front, Epcot’s Garden Grill has expanded from dinner only to breakfast, lunch, and dinner. (See our review of Chip n’ Dale’s Harvest Feast Breakfast here.) All three meals offer family-style service and character interaction. Cinnamon Bun Bake at Garden Grill Hollywood and Vine Restaurant at Disney’s Hollywood Studios will also expand character dining offerings with its Minnie Seasonal Dine parties. This celebration will change in theme seasonally — here’s our review of Minnie’s Holiday and Dine Dinner! Minnie Mouse Celebrates the Holidays at Hollywood and Vine Breakfast and lunch will continue to feature Disney Junior Play n’ Dine characters. And that’s a wrap! With Christmas behind us and the new year fast approaching, if your family is like mine, the kitchen conversation starts leaning towards spring and summer vacation decisions. Knowing that a Disney destination is top of mind for many people, our Disney Parks Moms Panelists are ready to start helping folks narrow down the choices to a perfect Disney get-away. Aparna from Ontario will be taking her family on their very first Disney vacation in May 2016 and asks what dining options are best for her three young children. Think that cooking oil is only good for making your favorite recipe? Think again! Cooking oil is actually a key ingredient for biodiesel fuel – a nontoxic biodegradable fuel that drastically reduces engine emissions in comparison to traditional petroleum diesel. As part of our commitment to minimize waste whenever possible, Disney Cruise Line has donated more than 60,000 gallons of used cooking oil to Bahamas Waste Management since 2011 to help power their fleet of vehicles in Nassau. Take a look at this video to learn more about this process. Bahamas Waste collects the used cooking oil directly from Disney Cruise Line ships in Nassau and converts it into biodiesel fuel. Today, approximately 25 Bahamas Waste vehicles are fueled by biodiesel and the organization has future plans to expand to its entire fleet. On a weekly basis, more than 1,000 gallons of used cooking oil are offloaded Disney Cruise Line ships and recycled in ports of call around the world. The recycled oil program is just one of many environmental initiatives at Disney Cruise Line focused on utilizing new technologies, increasing fuel efficiency, minimizing waste and promoting conservation worldwide. This past Saturday, Dec. 26, in a ceremony at Disney California Adventure park, No. 5 Iowa and No. 6 Stanford met to celebrate their upcoming match-up in the 2016 Rose Bowl Game presented by Northwestern Mutual on Friday, January 1, 2016, in Pasadena, Calif., during a visit to the Disneyland Resort. Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz, Stanford head coach David Shaw and members of both teams appeared in a ceremony with Disneyland Resort President Michael Colglazier and Mickey Mouse and friends at Paradise Pier in Disney California Adventure park. Among the Iowa players in attendance were offensive lineman Austin Blythe, running back Jordan Canzeri, defensive back Jordan Lomax, defensive back Greg Mabin and wide receiver Tevaun Smith. Featured Stanford players at the ceremony were quarterback Kevin Hogan, cornerback Ronnie Harris, inside linebacker Blake Martinez, offensive guard Joshua Garnett and running back Christian McCaffrey. Following the ceremony, each team enjoyed opportunities to experience popular Disney California Adventure park attractions, including Radiator Springs Racers in Cars Land and California Screamin’ at Paradise Pier. For Stanford, this will be the third time in four years and the 15th appearance all-time in the Rose Bowl Game. The Cardinal also makes history for being the Pac-12 champion during the 100-year anniversary of the conference. Iowa will make its sixth appearance overall in the Rose Bowl Game, and the first since 1991. The two teams have never met in a football game in the schools’ histories. Join us as we take a trip back to one of our favorite counter service stops — Cookes of Dublin! Learn About: Cooke’s of DublinDowntown Disney Disney World RestaurantsNot surprisingly, you’ll find this primarily-take-out spot adjacent to Raglan Road Irish Pub. In fact, it’s part of the same building, tucked in right around the corner from the restaurant’s main entrance. We routinely enjoy the house specialty here — freshly-prepard Fish and Chips. And it’s a rare visit that we don’t also indulge in some Irish Vintage Cheddar and Bacon Cheese Dip. But on a recent visit, with the family in tow, I decided to try a few of the other menu items. Come with us as we take a closer look. AtmosphereIf you’re looking for Cookes of Dublin, head for Raglan Road, and then hang a right. Go around past the gift shop and the Hole in the Wall Bar, and you’ve arrived! Cooke’s — Outside When you first step into the restaurant, you get a sense of just how small it is. That’s been done on purpose, actually. The owners envisioned this spot mostly as a takeaway. There are a few seats inside, however. Seating Area Here, you can see a few tables beyond the beverage and condiment station. Decor is vintage Dublin, with deep green-tiled walls and ceilings. Enlarged family photographs lend a sense of history, and etched mirrors serve to make the dining area feel a bit larger. Seats along the back wall include cushioned banquettes and chairs. Window tables are high-boy style. Seating — Up Close We selected one of the high-boys, primarily due to the cushioned window seats, where kiddos fit perfectly. Our Table Chalkboard signs remind you to check out offerings like the Soup de Jour and Dessert options. Signs One thing you should know about Cookes, compared to other counter service spots, is that many of the menu items are cooked to order. As a result, there’s usually a wait while your food is prepared. Also, there are no alcoholic beverages on the menu here. If you’d like a pint to go with your fish and chips or meat pie, then you’ll need to head back outside… This is Why You Wait a Bit :-) …Or rather, next door, to The Hole in the Wall. The Hole in the Wall The bar is one of several at Raglan Road, and also offers outdoor seating for Cookes. Outdoor Seating at Hole in the Wall An iron fence marks the perimeter of the bar, and a gate offers access to the walkway to Disney Springs. Gate Out to the Walkway Time to head back in and explore the menu a bit! EatsThe menu at Cookes is simple and hasn’t changed much through the years. Cooke’s Full Menu — Click to Enlarge Choose from Hand-Battered Specialties, like Cold Water Shrimp, Sausages, or Chicken Tenders. Dublin-style Savory Pies are also an option. If you’d like something on the lighter side, there are a few Salads to choose from. Hand Battered Options, Dublin-Style Pies, and Entree Salads — Click to Enlarge A selection of Sandwiches and Wraps are also on offer, including their signature Battered Burger. This is where you can pick up your customary side of Crushed Peas if you choose to! The Kids’ Menu rounds out the offerings with scaled-down versions of the adult entrees, plus one extra option. Sides, Kids’ Menu, and Beverages — Click to Enlarge Most of the Desserts are on display, so you can get a good idea of what’s available and if they appeal to you. The day we visited there were only a few selections, and we didn’t spy many of the Cupcakes that we’ve seen on previous visits. The fan favorite Doh-Bar was also still absent from the menu. Apple Strawberry Crumble Lemon and Raspberry Trifle A lighter option, a Fresh Fruit Cup, was also available. Fresh Fruit Cups We did spy one cupcake — a Gluten Free Zucchini variety. Gluten Free Zucchini Cupcakes Cookies were also available, and might prove to be a good on-the-go snack later. Cookies Crackle Cookies As I mentioned before, you can expect a wait when you dine at Cookes. When you place your order, you’re given a number to take to your table. No magic roses here like you’ll find at Be Our Guest Restaurant, but your food will find you just the same. Table Number Once you place your order, you can go about gathering your Drinks and Condiments from the self-serve area. Beverages and Condiments They have everything you’d want for your dipping needs — including creamy Dalkey Mustard. This is the same mustard dip that you get inside Raglan Road with the Dalkey Duo! Condiment Dispenser Of course, not all things come in dispenser form. You can also pick up bottles to fill your condiment needs. After all, it wouldn’t be fish and chips shoppe without Malt Vinegar. Right? Bottled Condiments We chose a variety for our table. Condiments for the Table Soon, our food arrived. My husband opted to start his meal with a Side Caesar Salad. House Salad It includes the same ingredients as the Entree Salad: Grape tomatoes, Shaved Parmesan, Homemade Croutons and Prosciutto Crisp. House Salad — Under the Lid But while he really likes the salad, he prefers Cookes Ranch Dressing to their Caesar. (I like both.) Still, he asked for some Ranch Dressing, and they happily brought some out. Dressings The biggest reason we opted for Cookes that day is this right here — we LOVE their Cold Water Shrimp and Chips Basket. Cold Water Shrimp and Chips — Up Close The Shrimp are hand-battered and served tail-off, which makes eating them with a fork a little easier. Everyone at the table loved the light batter and fresh flavor. Cold Water Shrimp — Up Close A peek at the current menu shows that the Shrimp Basket has been replaced by a Cold Water Shrimp Skewer. We’ll have to check it out and report back to you on that one. I decided to go with the Hog in a Box. Craving Sunday Dinner the way that your grandma used to make it? Then this is the meal for you! It arrives tucked into a takeout box lined with Cookes signature paper. It’s a little hard to tell what’s what, with everything piled in there. Hog in a Box I asked for one of the takeout “boats” so you could see a little better what was what. It’s indeed a meal in a box. Hog in a Box — Out of the Box There’s slow-roasted Pork Shoulder, which is garnished with Pork Crackling, Applesauce, and Caramelized Onions. Hog in a Box — Pork Shoulder — Up Close Baby Potatoes are halved and roasted to a golden brown. Hog in a Box — Potatoes — Up Close But my favorite side in that box was the delicious Sage and Sweet Onion Stuffing. It was the perfect consistency — neither too wet nor too dry. This combination was incredible, and more than I could eat in one sitting. Really, it was such a delicious, comforting meal. What a treat that I could enjoy food like this without spending all day in my kitchen! Hog in a Box — Stuffing — Up Close Finally, the kiddo with us is a Mac and Cheese fiend, so a helping of Dubliner Mac and Cheese and Chips was in order. Dubliner Mac and Cheese and Chips This Mac and Cheese had more of an orange cast than I remember, and I would prefer that it come with a side other than Chips. But all in all, they enjoyed it. And it still has that sharp, slightly nutty flavor that’s the hallmark of Dubliner Cheese. Also, since it was kind of a special occasion (family movie day), we didn’t worry too much about the lack of veggies. Dubliner Mac and Cheese — Up Close We debated ending our meal with a 99! But in the end, we didn’t have room for dessert. Time for a walk around Disney Springs! OverallCookes remains one of the best counter service options at Disney Springs. While it will be interesting to see what competition moves in as the transformation of the area continues, we predict that lines will continue to be long and seating scarce at this spot. The reason? Very, very good — and authentic — food. It’s not fancy, but it’s well executed. And sometimes, well-prepared comfort food is exactly what you want. Have you stopped by Cookes of Dublin for a meal? My fellow author Michelle Harker and I loved sharing the latest and greatest products created especially for Disney Parks. Thank you for your enthusiasm and comments this year. We look forward to an exciting 2016 filled with even more Unforgettable tangible memories. Retail MagicBands – The most popular item this year was retail MagicBands at Walt Disney World Resort. We released a variety of new character, limited release, and limited edition MagicBands throughout the year. In fall, we opened a retail MagicBand on Demand station inside the Tomorrowland Light & Power Co. at Magic Kingdom Park where guests can create and personalize their own MagicBands. Dia De Los Muertos Treats – Michelle shared details about Dia de los Muertos, apples, cake pops and crispies at Disneyland Resort. Disney Parks Collection | PANDORA Jewelry – We continued offering new items from the Disney Parks Collection | PANDORA, a collection of hand finished sterling silver and 14K gold charms developed especially for Disney Parks. Disneyland Resort Diamond Celebration – One of the most exciting things this year was the Disneyland Resort Diamond Celebration. The Disney Theme Park Merchandise team created more than 500 products, including apparel, accessories, headwear, home décor, souvenirs, toys, pins, D-Tech, collectibles and more. Michelle Harker shared details about these new items in a series of articles throughout the year including this popular behind-the-scenes video. New Collections and Classic Collaborations – We introduced two new collections this year for guests who love Disney and Disney Parks – Disney Boutique and Twenty Eight & Main. Guests also found new accessories by Vera Bradley or Dooney & Bourke. Unique Souvenirs From Disney Parks – This year saw plenty of unique souvenirs from Disney Parks including the Disney Parks Castle Play Set, hand sanitizers, and a new Disney Park Pack – Trading Edition offered only on the Disney Parks online store. The Disney Egg-stravaganza returned to Disney Parks in spring and the Sanderson Sisters put a spell on Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Parties in the fall. As the saying goes, time flies when you’re having fun. Well, 2015 has certainly been fun, and now here we are on the cusp of another incredible new year! For those of you planning to welcome 2016 at Walt Disney World Resort, we have quite a party planned for you. Here’s a rundown of some of the entertainment lined up for this year’s celebration. Epcot – It’s a night-long party throughout Epcot, with unique entertainment including a DJ and light show at the Future World Fountain Stage, dancing under flame effects and a smoke-billowing dragon in China, a British blast to the past in United Kingdom, Euro-pop and lasers in Italy, a Latin band and DJ on the America Gardens Stage and a “Silent DJ” party in Japan. Cap it all off with one of two showings of “IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth.” The 6:00 p.m. show will include our holiday finale, while the 11:40 p.m. performance will be followed by a countdown and pyrotechnic salute to the New Year.Disney’s Hollywood Studios – Ring in a most unforgettable New Year with a Disney character dance party at Center Stage, leading up to fantastic fireworks set to the soundtrack of favorite films and memorable moments from across Disney’s Hollywood Studios. When walkin’ (or rockin’) around the Hotels of the Disneyland Resort, I couldn’t help but admire all of the beautiful Christmas trees. Like some families I know, tree decorating is serious business. Our Disneyland Resort family is no exception. Our trees are, of course, themed to their location and each tree is meticulously decorated with the tiniest of thoughtful, individual details. With our Chief Photographer Paul Hiffmeyer in tow, we captured a few of our favorite Christmas trees spread across our three resort hotels.
