On a recent visit to Disney California Adventure park, I made a quick trip over to Refreshment Point located just outside of Humphrey’s Service & Supplies in Grizzly Peak Airfield. This quick stop started with an attempt to quench my thirst at our mix-and-match Coca-Cola Freestyle machines – which include your choice of more than 70 different soft drink options – and became something much more. New to the area – and definitely the essential item for any day trip or extended camp out – are the new Grizzly Peak Airfield canteens. Not only is it perfectly themed to the area, but it is definitely a great way to take your drink on the go. If you’re like me, I constantly struggle to finish my drink before hopping onto one of our beloved attractions. Now, I can fill it up and with a simple twist of the lid, secure it tight for the trip, no matter where it takes me. What do you get when you mix running with Disney? Running through our incredible theme parks, world-class entertainment and, of course, characters! In fact, many participants transform into the themes of our weekends and channel their favorite Disney characters while creating their costumes. With the runDisney Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend presented by Cigna right around the corner, I’ve collected pictures from last year’s event that really showcase the spirit of the weekend. Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend is the only race weekend that has a 5K, 10K, half marathon and marathon. Within these four races there are also two challenges: the Goofy Challenge and the Dopey Challenge. Wondering what that means? Keep reading! The Walt Disney World 5K is perfect for the whole family. The 5K theme is Pluto, and last year, runners really embraced their Pluto style! Minnie Mouse is the star of the Walt Disney World 10K, which is a great distance for runners of all skill levels. The Walt Disney World Half Marathon’s amazing 13.1 mile course is a runner’s delight, taking you through the magic, wonder, and sheer charm of Magic Kingdom Park, then on to Epcot, home of international World Showcase and Future World. The race concludes with a spectacular finish in the shadow of Spaceship Earth. The Walt Disney World Marathon is an adventure! Being the only course that takes you through the four Walt Disney World Resort theme parks and the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, the only true owner of this race has to be Mickey Mouse! There are two challenges within Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend. First, if you are “Goofy” enough to run the half marathon and marathon back-to-back, you will have successfully completed Goofy’s Race and a Half Challenge. That’s 39.3 miles in two days! The ultimate (and Dopiest!) challenge of Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend is the Dopey Challenge! The Dopey Challenge is 48.6 miles in four days. That is participating in all four races: the 5K, 10K, half marathon and marathon. What marvelous new merchandise is debuting at the Disneyland Resort? Here’s your first look at some exciting new offerings themed to some favorite super heroes. I admit I’m the first to get caught in the web of having to try this new apple. I think it’s safe to say you know who I’m talking about. So how did they do it? Magic, of course, along with super hero powers. This new apple has been dipped in rich caramel, covered in red sanding sugar and minutely detailed with chocolate to create the look of the mask. It can be found at Candy Palace and Hunny Spot in Disneyland park; Trolley Treats in Disney California Adventure park; and Marceline’s Confectionery in the Downtown Disney District. We introduced painted dogs to the Kilimanjaro Safaris savanna earlier this week at Disney’s Animal Kingdom! Everyone in Animals, Science and Environment is thrilled to have this unique species join the family. The name “painted dog” originates from their scientific name Lycaon pictus, which means “painted wolf-like animal” in Greek and Latin. Painted dogs, also known as African wild dogs, are known for their large round ears (They look a lot like Mickey Mouse ears!) and multi-colored fur coats. Each individual dog has unique paint-like splotches on their coat that are similar in their distinctiveness to a human fingerprint. Most also have bushy white-tipped tails. Painted dogs are among the most endangered species in Africa. By introducing painted dogs at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, we hope to raise awareness of the species and the threats they face, including human-habitat infringement and illegal hunting. The Disney Conservation Fund has been supporting painted dog conservation work in the wild since 1996 and has given more than half a million dollars to support painted dog conservation and research organizations. Painted dogs are fascinating in their social behaviors. They operate as a family unit with all members of the pack caring for each other. They will even share food with ailing members of their pack or nursing mothers. The entire pack cares for pups after they are born. Both males and females will stay back with them as “babysitters” during hunting excursions. When you’re on the Kilimanjaro Safaris savanna, I hope you can catch one of their elaborate greeting ceremonies. Each dog tries to interact with every other dog in the pack each time they wake up or return to the pack. Their yips and squeals are vocalizations that are unique to each dog and help others identify them. The painted dogs and hyenas will share the same spot of the savanna, but at different times of the day and evening. As always, guests will experience a different safari every time they ride. Fortunately, there are plenty available to scratch that itch. Just remember that while gingerbread treats are available at the Beach Club, they aren’t located by the display. Simply head to the Beach Club Marketplace to find them. Yacht Club Train Display Yacht Club Train Display There are tons of teeny details packed throughout the village scenes, from favorite Disney characters to signs for places that will be known to Yacht Club guests, like the Ship Shape Fitness Club, Hurricane Hanna’s, and Captain’s Grille. (A hint: search the snow all around the Ice Castle!) Yacht Club Train Display See it?!? Yacht Club Train Display Now, let’s take a quick stroll around Crescent Lake to the Yacht & Beach Club’s neighboring resort… Disney’s BoardWalk InnThe turn-of-the-century seaside charm of the BoardWalk Inn is reflected in their “reimagined” Gingerbread Display for 2015. Ginger’s Bread and Cookie Shoppe Welcome to Ginger’s Bread & Cookie Shoppe! Ginger’s Bread and Cookie Shoppe Sign In typical boardwalk fashion, there are even photo cutout displays where you can pose with your friends and family members. Display at Ginger’s Bread and Cookie Shoppe Display at Ginger’s Bread and Cookie Shoppe (Despite these fun additions, this display is definitely the least impressive of them all, though. If you’re going to skip one of the resorts, I’d suggest dropping this one from you list.) Again, festive goodies abound, from cupcakes and cookies (both gingerbread and non) to peppermint bark and traditional German Stollen bread. Gingerbread Cupcakes and Mickey Cookies Stollen Bread Caramel Popcorn and Peppermint Bark Gingerbread Shingles and Mickeys Perhaps less traditional, but perfect for a warm-weather Florida holiday, they are even serving Gelato at the BoardWalk’s display this year! Gingerbread, naturally, and Candy Cane are your festive flavor choices. Gingerbread and Candy Cane Gelato We’ll be sharing a full review on these cold goodies soon! But for now, that wraps up our time near Epcot. Next stop? A couple of Magic Kingdom area resorts… each just a quick trip on the monorail from the other. Disney’s Contemporary ResortThe Contemporary Resort display has received a “Frozen”-themed overlay for the second year in a row, featuring Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, and Sven placed in front of the Mary Blair-inspired gingerbread display. Contemporary Gingerbread Display Elsa and Sven Kristoff and Anna Lest you think Olaf was left behind… this year he’s received his own dream sandcastle! You know how this guy feels about warm weather. Olaf’s Sandcastle It really gives you an idea of how much effort and time is involved when you read the lists of ingredients posted near some of the displays. Contemporary Gingerbread Display Like last year, a “Frozen” blue hue and images of the film’s characters grace many of the snacks at the Contemporary’s display. Contemporary Gingerbread Display Snacks Gingerbread Olaf Shingles and Peppermint Popcorn Gingerbread Men, Ice Castle Cookies, Snowflake Ornaments, and Frozen S’mores This little “build your own snowman” is a super cute gift or stocking stuffer for someone back home! I tried the crushed peppermint chocolate cookie, and while it looks a little strange, it was actually pretty delicious! I love that at least one of the Chefs working at the treats stand has this additional decor on his or her jacket! Be sure to click on the picture so you can see the detail close-up! We’ve got one more stop to see the GRAND-daddy of them all… Disney’s Grand Floridian ResortWhile the Contemporary display takes on a more… well, contemporary design, it’s all tradition at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort’s Gingerbread House. Grand Floridian Gingerbread House 2015 In the house’s 17th year, it looks just as incredible as it always has! The detail is truly epic on this one. Gingerbread House operating hours and construction story Actually SEEING the construction is worth a visit in itself! So even if you’re not at Disney in December, head over to the Grand in November to see this spectacle! Putting the “snow” on the gingerbread house at Grand Floridian Building the House As always, the operating hours on that sign also indicate the times when you can buy your treats from INSIDE the gingerbread house. Yep — in true Disney fashion, the attraction is also a store! Unlike the other displays, you really don’t get a chance to see the treats until you walk right up to the store window (which can get crowded at times. The Ganachery chocolate boutique at Disney Springs opens December 15, where delectable chocolate is the star of the show. An extraordinary custom-blended dark chocolate is blended with cream, then covered in a “chocolate waterfall” to create 16 fabulous flavors, from coffee to cinnamon and curry. I grew up in Florida and experienced snow for the first time in my 30s (which is truly impossible since I’ve been 25 years old for about 16 years now). Mike Britton, the designer for our most recent wallpaper, grew up in Illinois. He drew from his expertise of ice and snow to create a frosty scene with his favorite Disney pup, Pluto. I recently took a tour to capture the team’s latest yuletide tradition of decking the jungle with all things merry and bright. I’m happy to share that Made with Magic has officially arrived to World Showcase in Epcot. One of the earliest Christmas memories I can recall involves using my very first pair of kids’ scissors to cut out homemade snowflakes. I’d cut out snowflake after snowflake and tape them all over the walls of our family room. The closer it got to Christmas, the more it “snowed” inside our house. Let’s head back to one of our favorite ice cream spots in Disney California Adventure: Clarabelle’s Hand-Scooped Ice Cream! Clarabelle’s Named after Clarabelle Cow (you can learn a little more on the backstory of her name — and subsequently the shop’s name — here), this cute little spot is located on Buena Vista Street in DCA. Entrance to Clarabelle’s AtmosphereThe basic set-up of ordering counters, registers, a massive wrought iron queue line, and not much else set the stage to get your ice cream and MOOOOO-VE on out at Clarabelle’s! Clarabelle’s Ice Cream Service Area Counters That said, there are definitely some “cool” touches around the place, some of which serve to remind you of the the star of the show: ICE CREAM! Check out the cone-shaped lighting fixtures made of beautiful pastel-colored glass. Cone Lighting Ice Cream Cone Inspired Chandelier Even the colorful tiles along the wall lead back to everyone’s favorite cold snack — with the colors representing the various flavors of ice cream available, from vanilla, to chocolate, to butter pecan and strawberry! (Classic Disney, no?) Ice Cream Flavor Tiles! Of course, this stunner of a stained-glass window needs no explanation: Clarabelle’s Stained Glass Windows You certainly can’t be reminded of ice cream this many times without developing a craving! Seating doesn’t exist at Clarabelle’s, but you can head on over through the archway to Fiddler/Starbucks for a seat. Wide Open Seating EatsAt a quick glance, Clarabelle’s serves your typical ice cream shop favorites including scoops, cups, and floats. Ice Cream Menu So, yes, you can certainly feed your inner child with your choice of flavor in a traditional waffle ice cream cone or cup. But when you’re looking at additional Triple-Scoop Sundae options like Mocha Almond Fudge or a Chocolate Chip Cookie & Hot Fudge Sundae, it’s hard to resist the temptation to go all out — especially when they’re served in Mickey Pants. Triple Scoop Sundaes Menu We’ll be checking out one of those sundaes in a few, but where Clarabelle’s really gets me is with the totally customizable Hand-Dipped Ice Cream Bars. Hand-Dipped Ice Cream Bar Just follow the sign for instructions! Step One: Choose Your Bar. Your ice cream base options include vanilla bean, milk chocolate, dark chocolate or mixed berry sorbet. Step Two: Choose Your Chocolate. Would you care for milk or dark? Step Three: Choose Your Topping. Arguably the most fun step ! Get your freshly dipped chocolate-covered ice cream bar dipped yet again in chocolate chip morsels, pearls, sprinkles, Mickey’s confetti, or blue raspberry bursts (aka Pop Rocks). Or just ask for the “Whole Herd” for a little bit (or a LOTTA bit) of every topping… like a couple of my cronies did! Ice Cream Bar with the “Whole Herd” There is always a pretty serious “wow” factor with this one. And thank goodness they place these guys in little boats so your toppings don’t go all over the place and you can gather up every last little chip, sprinkle, and pearl, because they do not go lightly on the toppings! Ice Cream Bar with the “Whole Herd” As per usual, the ice cream and chocolate was served very cold and solid, so it’s not an immediate melt-fest and you can take a little sweet time to savor it. I mentioned Sundaes, too, didn’t I? Clarabelle’s certainly has decent variety of specialty sundaes, and it was one of the locations where you could get the Olaf’s Perfect Sundae Day celebrating the “Frozen Fever” film short earlier this year. (Oh, 2015… where have you gone so quickly?) Frozen Sundae However, even if you notice occasional, seasonal nods to the characters du jour like that above, you’ll also find a tribute to someone who has been around a lot longer. Clarabelle Cow isn’t the only VERY classic character to get a nod here. Oswald the Rabbit has his very own creation: The Oswald Sundae! You’ll find it among the options on the Sundae menu, and I simply could NOT resist. Triple Scoop Sundaes Menu Each sundae comes with with large scoops of ice cream, fresh toppings, whipped cream and cherries… all served up in the Mickey Kitchen Sink aka “Mickey Pants Sundae” souvenir dish (you can get them at a lower price point in a non-souvenir dish, too). The Oswald Sundae The Oswald features a waffle cup on the bottom with chocolate and vanilla ice cream, hot fudge, whipped cream, chocolate chips, and cherries on top. But what makes this one “The Oswald” is, of course, those tall ears. And in this case, they’re made of a chocolate covered banana split in two. It’s two desserts in one, and another great example of a bit of the creativity behind some of the more crave-worthy creations at Clarabelle’s. OverallThanks to that awesome Hand-dipped Ice Cream Bar and a few other relatively original dishes in the world of Disney ice cream, Clarabelle’s has made quite a name for itself. Now three years old, Clarabelle’s is no longer brand new — but that’s still a short time frame for becoming one of the favorite ice cream spots in Disneyland Resort, and the designation is well earned. Whether you’re taking the “whole herd” or keeping things simple with a cone or cup, Clarabelle’s should have exactly what you need to fix that ice cream craving!
