Thanks to Paul (one of the three co-owners of Raglan Road), the pub’s Twitter account is a great place to find the scoop on all things Raglan. When it comes to making New Year’s resolutions I like to set goals that are obtainable (and don’t leave me feeling guilty about that unused gym membership come March). One goal I set every year is to take my family to see someplace we’ve never visited before. And my favorite way to do this is with Adventures by Disney. As we prepare to wish our Disneyland goats a fond farewell, we’re happy to announce that they have found a wonderful forever home on a farm in Murrieta, Calif. The farm’s owner, Jenelle, already cares for four former Disneyland goats on her farm: Jane, Lilo, Medusa and Penny. We spoke with Jenelle recently, and her love for our Disneyland goats is abundant. She’s looking forward to welcoming all the goats (and our sheep and donkeys, too)! Attention Disney Channel and Disney Junior fans! Watchers of “The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar,” the hit TV movie that just debuted on Disney Channel in November, will soon be able to become honorary members of the Lion Guard in a brand new Disney’s Animal Kingdom experience called The Lion Guard Adventure. The fun starts at Disney’s Animal Kingdom on February 7. This interactive experience will allow young guests to explore the park in search of five main characters from “The Lion Guard” – Kion, Bunga, Fuli, Beshte, and Ono, who are represented as colorful statues that are perfect for a kid-sized photo-ops. Like the movie, the experience encourages interest in protecting animals and caring for nature. Once they complete the adventure, each child can take a special pledge to become an honorary member of “The Lion Guard” and receive a special button. Join us in welcoming guest author Jennifer Harris with an informative review of allergy friendly dining at Walt Disney World. Are you on a special diet? Read on! Oh Disney, how I love your allergen-friendly ways. Dining at Disney is half the fun for those with food intolerance/allergy while visiting its theme parks. From the very first meal, it is apparent their talented team of chefs has got your back and then some. With table and quick service, buffet, and fine dining options, the attention paid to preparing allergen-free cuisine is exemplary. The sky is the limit at Disney because serving their guests is top priority. Preparation tables are sanitized, gloves are changed, and one chef handles the order from start to finish to ensure there is no cross contact. Disney can currently prepare meals for those allergic/intolerant to: wheat, gluten, peanuts and tree nuts, soy, eggs, corn, dairy and lactose, shellfish, and fish. Gluten Free Mickey Waffles If you haven’t enjoyed gluten-free cuisine at Disney, it is easy and effortless to enjoy. Advanced arrangements are not necessary at Disney. Guests can go to any dining location on the property and indicate a food intolerance/allergy. If eating at a table-service restaurant the chef will come to the table, but if you are at a quick-service area the chef will come directly to you. This lovely chef will be armed with either a binder with options by allergen, or the knowledge of what dishes are safe. The same chef prepares the dish, which is another way Disney makes gluten-free diners feel welcome and very comfortable. Here are some of my favorite places to grab a gluten-free meal while vacationing at Disney by park: Animal Kingdom and Animal Kingdom LodgeYak and Yeti Restaurant is a table-service option serving Pan-Asian cuisine in a Nepalese-style restaurant with gluten-free options. The chef will visit the table to go over the many gluten-free options. The portion sizes are huge with the seafood curry and the lettuce cups serving as menu highlights. Visit Sanaa in the Animal Kingdom Villas – Kidani Village, which is part of Animal Kingdom Lodge, for an African cooking with Indian flavors fine dining experience. The separate gluten-free menu (gluten and dairy free options, too) is extensive and includes gluten-free naan, inventive salads, curry, lamb, dessert, and much more. Again, the portion sizes are generous and the tender flavorful lamb shank and naan bread service with dipping sauces are ‘must order’ dishes. This restaurant also offers guests the pleasure of watching the exotic animals roam the Sunset Savanna while dining. Reservations are highly recommended. Salads Naan Bread and more at Sanaa Rainforest Café invites guests to enjoy American cuisine in the middle of a rain forest complete with animated animals. There isn’t a separate gluten-free menu, so the chef will indicate which dishes are safe. Order a burger or sandwich on a gluten-free bun, salads, or an entree and make sure to save room for dessert. Amazon Feast Downtown DisneyErin McKenna’s Bakery NYC offers guests an assortment of fresh baked gluten free and vegan goodies. Cupcakes, doughnuts, cookies, scones, cake, brownies, sweet and savory breads and more line the bakery cases. The cinnamon sugar doughnuts and banana bread are my favorite. Gluten Free Pastries T-REX offers a prehistoric and dinosaur-themed table-service dining experience complete with meteor showers. One of the most popular destinations for kids, it is a good idea to make reservations or get in line right as it is opening. The restaurant is huge, but it fills up fast. It is actually surprising how many dishes either are, or can be modified to be gluten free, including pasta, rotisserie chicken, steak, and ribs. Save room for dessert! Wooly Mammoth Chicken Fulton’s Crab House is the place to go for fresh seafood, which is flown in daily from ports around the world. The table-service restaurant, which is housed on board an authentic riverboat, is a fine-dining establishment with a menu full of seafood. Lobster, clams, crab, and mussels are steamed and served with potatoes and corn on the cob. Steak and ribs are on the menu too for red meat lovers. This lovely restaurant right on the water is another one where making reservations is a plus. Fultons Crab House Bar area and Dining Room Raglan Road Irish Pub and Restaurant is a great place to go and experience authentic Irish cuisine, Irish dancing, and live music. At this table-service restaurant, a chef will not visit the table, but the servers are well informed about which dishes can be prepared gluten free. They have a dedicated fryer, so fried shrimp, fish and chips, and onion rings are available and highly recommended. The shepherd’s pie is gluten free, so be sure to order a side of crushed green peas or garlic parmesan and truffle oil skinny chips to dip in the gravy. An ice cold cider washes it all down. Shepherd’s Pie Cookes of Dublin is Raglan Road’s quick service restaurant and a great place to grab a lunch of fried seafood made in a dedicated fryer. Fish, shrimp, and chicken tenders can all be prepared gluten free, but the star of fried seafood is Georges Bank Atlantic scallops. The batter is crispy, stays attached, and manages to be light and flavorful without being too salty. Try one of their gluten-free cupcakes for a perfect end to a special meal. EpcotStop by France’s Les Halles Boulangerie Patisserie for a sweet treat of French macaroons, chocolate covered meringues, crème bruele, or a berry parfait. Macarons from Les Halles The Biergarten Restaurant in Germany comes complete with biergarten-style tables, a live band, sing along, and of course a large buffet of German delights. The meatloaf, hot German potato salad, applesauce, potatoes, beet salad, red cabbage, sausage, soup, carved meats, and more are all gluten free. A chef will visit the table and offer to make a plate in the back. Take them up on this offer because this buffet tends to have an issue with cross contact. The red berry compote with custard-like cream is a divine dessert and kept us coming back for more. They have an excellent selection of German wines to pair with the cuisine. Carving Station with German Meat Loaf, Pork Roast, and Red Wine Sauce La Hacienda de San Angel in Mexico offers Mexican cuisine and lagoon views. Their menu marks all gluten free and gluten and dairy-free options, and there are many. Sadly, the chips are not prepared in a dedicated fryer. Seared snapper, marinated chicken with roasted vegetables, braised short ribs with chimichurri, steak, and pork confit with pico de gallo are all gluten free. Go for the food, but stay to enjoy one of their signature margaritas. Mango blueberry basil, lime raspberry, and avocado are made with fresh juices and sweetened with agave. Braised Short Ribs Akershus Royal Banquet Hall in Norway offers a character table-service experience inside of a medieval castle with a mix of table service, buffet, and family style dining. Their extensive gluten-free menu offers diners an authentic taste of Norwegian fare: pan-seared salmon, oven-roasted chicken breast, red wine braised beef, pork chops, cod, and a Norwegian meatball dish called Kjottkake. They also offer macaroni and cheese and pizza. The buffet is loaded with imported cheeses, cured and sliced meats, and a selection of salads and fruits. Ask the chef to prepare your buffet choices in the back to avoid possible cross contact. Sorbet, cookies, and vegan ice creams round out desserts. Cucumber Salad Hollywood Studios50’s Prime Time Café is a table-service restaurant serving up good old American comfort food in a stylized setting complete with checkerboard floor, Formica tables, and sassy wait staff. The restaurant serves up some highly sought after gluten-free items, like meatloaf, and chicken pot pie, but it is the fried chicken on the bone with mashed potatoes and gravy and grilled vegetables that brings in the gluten-free crowd. Make a reservation or you will be waiting for a while. Aunt Liz’s Golden Fried Chicken ABC Commissary is a quick-service restaurant where orders are placed at the registers and then people step forward to collect their order. They offer burgers on an Udi’s Gluten Free wholegrain bun with French fries, Asian salad topped with grilled chicken or salmon, chicken tenders, steak and roasted salmon. Great quick lunch stop before heading off to enjoy the park. Asian Salad with Chicken Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater is set up like a ’50s drive-in, where diners sit in classic cars and watch sci-fi movies while enjoying all-American cuisine. Choose from burgers and sandwiches on buns with French fries, ribs, chicken or shrimp pasta, and steak. Appetizers include wings, salad, and spinach and artichoke dip with corn tortilla chips. This is the perfect atmosphere to enjoy a hot fudge sundae, brownie a la mode, or a shake. Reservations are crucial and the wait is long without one. Flame Broiled New York Strip Steak The Hollywood Brown Derby is my favorite place to dine when visiting Disney’s Hollywood Studios. It offers a fine dining experience like no other. Step into this restaurant and one is transported to the golden age of Hollywood. The restaurant is gorgeous with its wood paneling, checkerboard floor, and walls adorned with caricatures of famous actors. One of the few places where warm table bread with whipped butter is a standard even for gluten-free diners. Order the Famous Cobb salad heaped with ingredients and watch as the waiter expertly cuts and chops it into a feast. The wagyu burger topped with pastrami, onions, avocado, cheese, and a fried egg is served on a gluten-free bun and comes with hand-cut fries. If you are really lucky, a well-dressed character may visit your table to bum a light, or perform a magic trick. Reservations are highly recommended. Wagyu Burger Magic KingdomCosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe offers burgers and French fries on gluten-free buns in a quick-service environment. Make sure to ask them to heat the bun for your order, otherwise it will come out room temperature and a little stiff. Fries are prepared in a dedicated fryer and served piping hot. Cosmic Ray’s Burgers We always visit Columbia Harbour House to indulge in gluten-free chicken tenders and French fries. They also offer Amy’s macaroni and cheese, grilled salmon, and steamed fresh broccoli on their allergen-friendly menu. This quick-service restaurant is a great place for lunch and includes gluten-free brownies and cookies for dessert. Gluten Free Chicken Tenders The Crystal Palace’s character buffet invites guests to take a load off and enjoy an extensive spread of options. The restaurant takes its inspiration from Victorian greenhouses of the late 1800s and is filled with light, topiaries of Disney characters, and tropical palms. A chef will visit the table and take guests on a tour of the buffet to point out safe items and will offer the option of preparing dishes in the back. Choose from fresh hot and cold salads, seafood, carved meats, chicken, salmon, cold meats, and more. Salads Grab a Dole Whip at Aloha Isle for a creamy and refreshing treat of soft serve ice cream made from Dole’s pineapple juice. Pineapple, vanilla or swirled soft serve ice cream, floats, and fresh pineapple spears are available. All of the Dole Whip flavors are free of gluten and lactose, but only the fruit flavors are vegan. The line may be long, but this sweet treat is definitely worth the wait. Dole Whip! Liberty Tree Tavern is an excellent place for table-service lunch or dinner. Hearty all-American style cuisine is on the menu at this patriotic restaurant. The star of their gluten-free offerings is The Pilgrim’s Feast that includes turkey, mashed potatoes, green beans, dinner rolls, and gravy. Being able to dip dinner rolls into the homemade gravy is such a treat for this Midwesterner. Pot roast, salad topped with meat, and burgers and sandwiches on gluten-free buns round out their offerings. We make it a point to go every time we visit the park. Pilgrim’s Feast The Plaza Ice Cream Parlor offers Tofutti brand chocolate and vanilla ice cream in a cup. OverallNo matter where guests with food allergies/intolerance dine at Disney, rest assured the chefs go above and beyond to ensure a delicious and safe experience is had by all. The Disneyland Resort Diamond Celebration continues! On January 14, bring home the next piece in the “Decades” collection, depicting 1985 to 1994. I’m probably not the only one having flashbacks right now, mostly of the late 80s, early 90s style, but here are a few other things you may remember that happened during that time frame at the Disneyland Resort. I know some of you spent time at the high-tech (for its time) Videopolis! Don’t deny it. During this time, it was also the 30th and 35th anniversary of Disneyland park; a certain intergalactic musical adventure debuted in the Magic Eye theater in Tomorrowland; Star Tours launched us into a galaxy far, far away; we found our laughing place inside Splash Mountain, changes were underway at the Disneyland Hotel; nighttime spectacular “Fantasmic!” gave us our first look into Mickey Mouse’s imagination; Mickey’s Toontown came to life. That, my fellow Disney fans, is just the tip of the iceberg, as I’m sure you know. To commemorate this special time in Disney Parks history, the art designed by local southern California artist Jeff Granito will appear on a t-shirt, mug, plate, pin and print. On a recent trip to the River Roost to catch a Yeeha Bob show, I couldn’t resist stopping in Fulton’s General Store (the merchandise shop in Port Orleans – Riverside Resort). For better or for worse, the past year brought on a resurgence of an old mug habit for me, due in no small part to the Resort-specific mugs that popped up around Disney World (like the one for the Contemporary Resort). Alas, they were all out of the Port Orleans — Riverside mug that I had hoped to pick up, but I did spot this new-to-me mug while I was there. Mug handle Rather than being Resort or park-specific, this one does a nice job of showing various aspects of experiences all over the Disney World parks, featuring scrapbook-like images of favorite attractions mixed with beloved characters. For instance, here’s a little something for all you fans of Figment out there. Attractions and Characters on Mug Continuing our Grand Circle Tour ‘round the mug, I love the incorporation of the Partners Statue from the Magic Kingdom hub, and Monorail Blue winding its way through Epcot. Attractions and Characters on Mug Pluto looks a little nervous around the Haunted Mansion, which is, of course, extra-foreboding at night. Attractions and Characters on Mug So, yeah, it’s pretty cute, and I like all the aspects of the parks represented on the outside. Still, call me sentimental… but it’s what appears inside the mug that is totally the clincher. “Wish I was there…” It’s $14.95, and as I mentioned, I spotted it at Fulton’s, so I would imagine it’s also at the major merch locations like Epcot’s Mouse Gears and Magic Kingdom’s Emporium. I haven’t seen it, though, on the Shop Disney Parks app (the app which allows you to purchase Disney Parks merchandise directly from the app). I searched through all the mugs on Shop Disney Parks, but no dice just yet. Of course, I did find several more I wanted to add to my collection. So, I gotta go. 2015 was full of culinary news for Walt Disney World Resort, and 2016 promises to be equally exciting, especially at Disney Springs. From new restaurants to more fun with Disney characters, here’s a look ahead at 2016. Sunday brunches are the hot weekend ticket. Narcoossee’s Waterfront Brunch at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa is a new one, and Brunch at the Top debuts February 7 at California Grill at Disney’s Contemporary Resort. For reservations, visit DisneyWorld.com/dine or call 407-WDW-DINE. Get over to the new Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. Skipper Canteen in the Magic Kingdom Park and try a rice noodle bowl, sustainable local farm-raised shrimp in chili-garlic sauce, or the Kungaloosh!, an African-inspired chocolate cake with caramelized bananas with cashew-caramel ice cream. This is an all-new menu for the Disney chefs. Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival expands to 90 days, March 2 to May 30 (from 75 days last year). Fresh garden produce, savory bites and sweet treats will be abundant at the festival’s Outdoor Kitchens, returning for a fourth year with guest favorites and new food and beverage offerings. Tiffins at Disney’s Animal Kingdom will celebrate the art of traveling, featuring foods from places that inspired the creation of Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Open for both lunch and dinner. (“Tiffin” is an Indian English word for a midday meal or a type of container used to carry food while traveling). Adjacent to Tiffins, Nomad Lounge will feature hand-crafted cocktails using the art of mixology with African, Asian and South American flavors, beers and wines from those regions, and a selection of specialty non-alcoholic beverages in addition to small bites. Flying Fish Cafe at Disney’s BoardWalk will temporarily close the end of January, then reopen in the fall with a whole new look – and while the kitchen is working on new menu items, Chef Tim Keating promises that potato-wrapped snapper and the popular New York strip steak will be back. Minnie’s Seasonal Dine at Hollywood & Vine at Disney’’s Hollywood Studios debuted in 2015, but guests can look forward to new themes coming in 2016, including Minnie’s Silver Screen Dine, Minnie’s Springtime Dine, Minnie’s Summertime Dine and Minnie’s Halloween Dine. Let’s start 2016 with a taste of the chocolate at The Ganachery at Disney Springs – the proprietary blend of chocolate and cream made right in the shop is not to be missed. The lovely little space elevates sweets to an experience akin to a wine tasting.Coming to Disney Springs in early 2016 is STK, a modern steakhouse mixed with the ambiance of a sleek lounge and emphasizing a social and fun environment. It will be one of the largest STK locations in the world, occupying 14,000 square feet in a two-story building, including a main level and a rooftop-dining area with incredible views of Disney Springs. Sprinkles, the world’s first cupcake bakery, as named by Food Network and others, will serve up handcrafted cupcakes, slow churned ice cream and homemade cookies at Disney Springs in 2016. Their innovative Cupcake ATM will satisfy sweet-toothed epicureans 24/7.Blaze Fast-Fire’d Pizza also comes to Disney Springs in 2016, a modern day “pizza joint” known for its custom-built artisanal pizzas, freshly made salads, blood orange lemonade and s’more pies. The fast-casual restaurant will feature an interactive assembly-line format that allows guests to customize their pizza, choosing from over 40 fresh toppings. Homecoming: Florida Kitchen and Southern Shine will showcase the cuisine of Chef Art Smith at Disney Springs when it opens in Summer 2016. Smith, who was born and reared in the town of Jasper, Fla., on the Florida-Georgia border, will feature farm-to-fork cuisine that showcases the bounty of Florida, and design inspired by turn-of-the century Florida architecture of the late 1800s. Also opening in Summer 2016 at Disney Springs, Frontera Fresco by Chef Rick Bayless will showcase the gourmet Mexican cuisine that has made Chef Bayless a culinary legend. The restaurant will feature authentic Mexican specialties such as hand-crafted tortas, tacos, salads, fresh-made guacamole and classic Mexican braised meat entrees, all prepared from time-honored recipes with natural, locally sourced ingredients. Frontera Fresco also will serve an extensive selection of margaritas, cocktails and craft beers and wine. Look for a re-imagined Planet Hollywood at Disney Springs as the flagship venue is transformed into a star-themed Planet Hollywood Observatory to match the look and feel of Disney Springs. As part of the makeover, the venue will add a new outdoor terrace and bar space called Stargazers and feature live entertainment. When Sanaa opened in 2009 at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge – Kidani Village, the cuisine was a new adventure for Disney chefs – a melding of Indian and African influences inspired by the resort’s African theme and the melding of the two cultures so closely connected on the ancient Spice Trade Route. Now Chef Eddie Mendoza has added new dishes to the menu that he calls “African with an Indian touch.” “We didn’t invent this fusion, it happened with the ancient spice trade,” says Chef Eddie. “Something magical happened once the Indian spices hit the shores of Africa.” The restaurant is one of Disney’s top table-service restaurants, but many still consider it a well-kept secret (and a Cast Member favorite). For starters, the view is one of the best at Walt Disney World Resort, with zebras, giraffes and other animals grazing just outside the windows. Lunch is relaxed with lighter fare, and dinner is a bit more elegant and features a top-notch wine list that’s primarily South African. “The service team is learning the stories behind our new dishes and also having fun learning their pronunciations”, says Chef Eddie. The popular curries remain on the lunch and dinner menus, as well as the butter chicken, but new favorites include a Traditional Sosatie cooked on skewers with lamb and apricots, and served with butternut squash, bacon, cashews and goat cheese. The Biryani, generally considered an Indian dish, gets African spice and seasonal vegetables “influenced from the Cape of Good Hope.” How about “Boerewors and Slaphakskeentjies,” traditional South African sausages (boerewors) served with a Cape Malay Onion Salad (slaphakskeentjies). We promise it’s all delicious and described on the menu with a glossary that includes everything from Potjie to describe “slow-braised items” to Umngqusho, a “favorite dish of the Congo with samp (hominy) and beans flavored with butter” (said to be Nelson Mandela’s favorite dish). You can be adventurous or stick with tried-and-true dishes such as grilled New York strip steak or seasonal sustainable fish – but we say this is the time to be adventurous, as Chef Eddie makes sure the dishes are just right (you can ask for more heat if you prefer). Lunch still includes the delectable roasted Peri Peri Chicken sandwich and features the new Kenya Coffee BBQ sandwich. We can make a meal of the Indian-style bread service and accompaniments: Coriander Chutney, Garlic Pickle, Tomato-Date Jam and Mango Chutney, for instance. “Allergy-friendly menus and dietary needs are pretty simple in the Sanaa kitchen,” says Chef Eddie, “as much of the menu is plant based and easy to tweak for special diets.” For reservations, visit DisneyWorld.com/dine or call 407-WDW-DINE. Magic Kingdom, how we love you. You are, for many of us, the source of our earliest Disney Memories. Heck, some of us remember when you were the ONLY Park. (Am I showing my age here?) Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom But even though you’ve been around the longest, we’re no less fond of you. In fact, coming back to ride old favorites or experience new attractions always feels a bit like coming home. However, even with so much to do and see in Magic Kingdom, it’s the eating that we look forward to the most! And I know a lot of you are planning your 2016 Disney trips RIGHT NOW and are wondering what our favorites might be. So today, let’s take a closer look at our Favorite Magic Kingdom Restaurants. They are spots that we love for all kinds of reasons — from food to history and atmosphere and beyond! Hooray! Let’s eat! Be Our Guest RestaurantWhen Be Our Guest Restaurant was first announced, we were excited to say the least. I mean, New Fantasyland, a new classic film, Be Our Guest, restaurant? It was practically destiny. (Now if they could just rig up a singing candelabra, life would be perfect.) The Themeing Makes Be Our Guest a Must See! If you ever wanted to step into a Disney movie, this is your chance. Imagineers went to extraordinary lengths to recreate Beauty and the Beast in every room of this castle. Right from the beginning, the West Wing struck a chord with guests — and with us! West Wing Dining Area in Be Our Guest Restaurant If you dine there, be sure to check out the Beast’s portrait as the painting changes from the arrogant, handsome prince to the Beast — if only for a second! Morphing Prince Portrait in the West Wing West Wing Beast Portrait But as truly amazing as the theming is, it’s not the only draw here. We’ve also had some pretty delicious food as well — especially at lunch. The format at lunch is quick service, but the meals are anything but fast food. While you order (or pre-order) your meals at a kiosk, you sit down and your food is delivered to you. On real plates! And don’t bother looking for burgers. But why would you, with options like Braised Pork Coq Au Vin Style? And don’t forget — breakfast and lunch at Be Our Guest are such hot tickets, you can actually make advance dining reservations for them. (Since dinner is table service, you should also plan to make ADRs for that meal as well.) You also have the option of pre-ordering breakfast and lunch via the My Disney Experience App. Braised Pork Coq Au Vin Style Dinner is delicious as well. For the evening meal, you’re treated to a table service experience. But know this — dinner at BOG is the hottest ticket in the Magic Kingdom. You’ll need to book 6 months in advance for this one. Grilled Strip Steak And to complement the French-inspired cuisine, you can also indulge in wine or beer — the only place in all of Magic Kingdom where you can. Enjoy the Novelty of a Chimay Blue at Be Our Guest Restaurant As much an attraction as an eatery, Be Our Guest Restaurant is worth exploring during your next Disney World visit. Liberty Tree TavernAnd now we travel across lands and through time — from one of Magic Kingdom’s newest restaurants, to one of its originals. Liberty Tree Tavern is one of our perennial favorites. Liberty Tree Tavern Liberty Tree Tavern is as much a slice of history as anything else. Themed in 18th Century American Colonial style, rooms reflect the personality of notables they’re named for. Dine in the shadow of Benjamin Franklin, Betsy Ross, John Paul Jones, George Washington, and others. Coats and Hat Hanging at the Ready One interesting aspect of dining at Liberty Tree is that lunch and dinner offer different menus, and take on different formats. Lunch is an a la carte selection, while dinner is a family style feast, offering American favorites, like turkey dinner with all the trimmings. While both are excellent, I prefer lunch, which features some of my all-time favorite Disney dishes, like the Liberty Tree Tavern Burger. Trust me, you can skip dinner when you have this for lunch! Liberty Tree Tavern Burger But you can’t skip dessert! Because anytime Ooey Gooey Toffee Cake is an option, I’m going to take it. Ooey Gooey Toffee Cake Stop by for the history, stick around for the food — or vice versa. Either way, you’re winning. Sleepy Hollow RefreshmentsBut if you suddenly feel hunger threatening and you don’t have an advance dining reservation, don’t despair. Sleepy Hollow Refreshments is another dining destination we wouldn’t want you to miss. Sleepy Hollow Refreshments Sleepy Hollow Refreshments Located a stone’s throw from Liberty Tree, this counter service spot also sits in the shadow of Cinderella Castle and it offers some of the most interesting — and filling — snacks in all of Disney World. We’d argue that they would easily pass for a meal. Whether you find yourself at Sleepy Hollow for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, we heartily recommend that you save room for one of their Waffle Sandwiches. Introduced just a few years ago, they’ve quickly won a place on our list of must-try treats! Chicken Waffle Sandwich and Nutella and Fruit Waffle Sandwich But if it’s an afternoon dessert that you’re looking for, you can also enjoy a Handmade Ice Cream Sandwich or a yummy dressed up waffle here. Birthday Cake Ice Cream Sandwich Dressed Up Waffle! Be sure to check for seasonal favorites at Sleepy Hollow, too. Both Ice Cream Sandwiches and Funnel Cakes tend to change depending on the time of year you visit! Plaza RestaurantPlaza Restaurant. You may be thinking, What is that? That’s because this table service spot is often overlooked when it comes to Magic Kingdom’s more razzle dazzle spots, like Be Our Guest Restaurant and Cinderella’s Royal Table. But take my advice: don’t overlook this place! Because the Plaza Restaurant offers two great things — good food and great value (by Disney standards). It may be a little nondescript as themeing goes, but it is pleasant and fits into Main Street USA beautifully. Watch for visits from the Mayor of Main Street or the Fire Chief through your meal, and be sure to check out the view of Cinderella Castle from The Plaza. The Plaza Restaurant — Outside We have also been impressed with their menu offerings. The Meatloaf Meal might not sound all that interesting, but it’s one of my favorite best kept secrets at Walt Disney World! Meatloaf Meal at The Plaza Restaurant Another favorite is the Chicken Strawberry Salad — it’s as beautiful as it is delicious. Chicken Strawberry Salad And you can’t pass up the temptation of a great Milkshake, right? Me neither! Plaza Restaurant Milkshake With the Plaza Ice Cream Parlor right next door, these hand-dipped treats are the real deal! Crystal PalaceBut our list of Top spots wouldn’t be complete without characters + food! And so we make our way to Crystal Palace next. This Magic Kingdom fixture has also been around since the dawn of Disney time. Inspired by England’s Crystal Palace and other Victorian-style conservatories, the space is stunning. Crystal Palace Atrium But step inside and you’ll meet your favorite characters from 100 Acre Wood! Winnie the Pooh! Whether you choose to enjoy breakfast, lunch, or dinner, the buffet is expansive, and offers a wide array of American-style favorites. Guests who enjoy their morning meal rave about the Breakfast Lasagna, while the lunch and dinner crowd enjoy freshly prepared Rotisserie Meats, roasted in view of the carving station. Rotisserie Meats And be sure to take a look at the Dessert Spread. There’s something for everyone, from Sugar Free desserts to Soft Serve Ice Cream. I couldn’t resist the Turtle Cheesecake on my recent visit! Turtle Cheesecake on the Dessert Buffet Many of you tell us that your Disney vacay wouldn’t be complete without a visit here. With beautiful surroundings, warm character interaction, and good food, we can totally see why! Honorable Mention: Cinderella’s Royal TableEven though we’ve reached the end of our Top 5 — and trust me, there are other notables we’d love to mention — we can’t wrap up our list without a nod to Cinderella’s Royal Table. I mean, the castle is so iconic that it represents the entire Walt Disney company. And are you kidding me that there’s a restaurant in there, too??? Cinderella’s Royal Table Really, a meal at Cinderella’s Royal Table has to be on the bucket list of every self-respecting Disney fan. Who doesn’t want to see inside those walls and turrets? Dining Room Windows at Cinderella’s Royal Table Dining at Cinderella’s Royal Table ensures character interaction, too. While you enjoy your meal, Cinderella’s princess friends meet and greet and take pictures and offer autographs. (Cinderella doesn’t actually mingle, but you have a chance to meet her before you’re seated.) Jasmine Is One of the Princesses You May Meet at Cinderella’s Royal Table In the past, the food here was considered largely overpriced and forgettable. But in the last few years, changes have been taking place. We’re seeing more turnover on the lunch and dinner menu as chefs look to take a more seasonal approach and capitalize on hot and healthier food trends. Roasted Chicken And guests have raved about the breakfast offerings for quite sometime — especially the Pastries and the Stuffed French Toast, which changes up now and then. The characters and ambiance are still the big draw. But chances are nowadays, you’ll enjoy your meal here as well. Honorable Mention — Skipper CanteenThe jury is still out on this one, since it JUST opened in December 2015. But who wouldn’t love a Jungle Cruise themed restaurant, right?! Jungle Skipper Canteen Sign Yep, Jungle Cruise skippers staff this spot, and there’s a whole backstory related to the beloved ride as well. Dine in one of three themed dining rooms, and indulge in dishes with far-flung flair (look for flavors from Africa, Asia, and South America — the three continents that are home to the rivers visited in the Jungle Cruise). S.E.A. Shu Mai Those who have fond memories of The Adventurers Club in Downtown Disney can indulge in a dessert named after one of our favorite Adventurer drinks: Kungaloosh! Kungaloosh! We’re in “WE CAN’T WAIT” mode when it comes to the 2016 Epcot Food and Wine Festival, and we’re already talking about it and planning for it! But since we can’t be there right now, it’s fun to cook up some of our favorite dishes at home! Lamb chops might not be an everyday kind of meal around your house – it certainly isn’t in the regular rotation at our house – but these Grilled Lamb Chops with Mint Pesto and Potato Crunchies make a nice weekend dinner for the family. Or maybe you’re planning a casual dinner party for friends – these would be the perfect main dish! These aren’t too fancy or labor-intensive when it comes to grilling lamb chops – which is one of the reasons we love this recipe. It really is quick and easy, and since it’s one of the most beloved dishes at the Food and Wine Festival, we’re pretty sure it’ll be a winner at your house, too. And the “potato crunchies” – well, that’s just a fancy name for crushed salt and vinegar potato chips! It doesn’t get easier than that! Read on! ;-D Grilled Lamb Chop with Mint Pesto and Potato Crunchies Grilled Lamb Chops with Mint Pesto and Potato CrunchiesAustralia Marketplace Booth Serves 4 Ingredients: Mint Pesto with Feta Cheese: 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 teaspoon coarse salt, divided 3/4 cup olive oil, divided 1/4 cup mint leaves, washed and dried 1/4 cup crumbled feta cheese Lamb Chops: 1/4 cup olive oil 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/4 teaspoon coarse salt 4 Australian lamb chops 1/3 cup crushed salt and vinegar potato chips, for garnish Instructions: For mint pesto with feta cheese: 1. Place garlic, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 cup olive oil into a blender or food processor. Blend to a paste. 2. Gradually add mint leaves and pulse until emulsified. Gradually add remaining oil. 3. Adjust seasoning with remaining salt, as needed. Refrigerate until ready to use. Mix in feta just before serving. For lamb chops: 1. Combine olive oil, pepper, and salt in shallow dish large enough to place the lamb chops in a single layer. Coat both sides of chops with oil. 2. Grill lamb chops, uncovered, over medium heat for 10-15 minutes, turning once, or until desired doneness. To serve: 1. Spread 1 tablespoon pesto on each lamb chop. Sprinkle crushed potato chips evenly over each grilled lamb chop. 2. Refrigerate remaining pesto in sealed container. Start Your Planning Today! As the Disneyland Resort Diamond Celebration continues into 2016 and Season of the Force takes guests into the Star Wars galaxy in Tomorrowland, Disneyland Resort starts the new year with a special ticket offer for Southern California residents. For a limited time, residents may choose from options for two or three days of magic and adventure at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure parks at special prices. To help Southern California residents enjoy all the fun, special 2-day and 3-day Southern California Resident tickets* are available beginning January 6, 2016. The offer has four purchase options: a 2-day ticket with choice of one park per day for $149; a 2-day Park Hopper ticket for $189; a 3-day ticket with choice of one park per day for $179, or a 3-day Park Hopper ticket for $219. With these limited-time tickets, Southern California residents have the flexibility to make memories with family and friends over two or three days, from January 6 through May 19, 2016.* (Dates blocked are March 20 – April 2, 2016.) The sooner a purchase is made, the more time guests will have to return for a second or third visit. These special 2-day and 3-day tickets are an ideal way to catch all the fun, but they won’t be available for long. Southern California residents must purchase tickets by May 19, 2016. Tickets expire after May 26, 2016, and blockout dates apply. They can be purchased at www.disneyland.com/flex, The Disney Stores, Vons and other retail locations, as well as any Disneyland Resort ticket booth. Remember the old days when getting a decent cup of coffee at Walt Disney World was practically impossible? Unless you enjoyed kicking off your day with a cup of Nescafe, you were just out of luck back then. Stories of Disney fans bringing provisions from home weren’t out of the ordinary. But as the world has slowly awakened to better coffee, Disney has jumped on the bandwagon. In the last few years especially, better coffee options at Disney World have grown by leaps and bounds. One of the best ways to enjoy a good cup is via Press Pots, which are offered at many table service restaurants throughout the resort. You’ll find specific varieties, roasts, and blends by Joffrey’s Coffee, tailored to the tastes and theme of each resort. Let’s look at a couple of our favorites! Kona Cafe at Disney’s Polynesian Village ResortKona Cafe has long been one of my favorite morning dining spots in Walt Disney World. (It’s pretty fantastic for lunch and dinner as well.) In addition to many breakfast specialties like Tonga Toast and The Samoan, the Polynesian Village Resort restaurant has another claim to fame: genuine Kona Coffee. French Press Coffee at Kona Cafe In fact, no breakfast here is complete without a press pot of this richness on the table in my opinion. It’s especially perfect with sweet breakfast options, like Macadamia Pineapple Pancakes. A Cup of Kona Complements Macadamia Pineapple Pancakes Perfectly No time for a sit-down breakfast? You can also score Kona Coffee in a Press Pot at the Kona Island, which serves as a Coffee Bar during morning hours. Boma, Jiko, and Sanaa at Disney’s Animal Kingdom LodgeThe restaurants of Animal Kingdom Lodge also offer press pots, but here, you’ll find a gourmet blend of Kenya Coffee prepared fresh to order. We’ve seen the option on menus at all of the Lodge’s restaurants — Sanaa, Jiko, and Boma. You Can Get a Press Pot of Kenyan with Your Breakfast or Dinner at Boma I can’t think of a better way to enjoy those Zebra Domes, or one of the sumptuous desserts at Jiko or Sanaa, than with a great cup of coffee. Zebra Dome + Kenyan Coffee — YESSS! And, of course, it would also be great to enjoy with the specialties you find on Boma’s breakfast buffet. Trattoria al Forno at Disney’s BoardWalk InnAnother spot to indulge in a Press Pot is Trattoria al Forno. Located at Disney’s BoardWalk Inn, the restaurant, which is open for breakfast and dinner, offers a modern take on classic Italian fare. Their signature Italian-style Coffee offers notes of berry and milk chocolate. Press Pot of Coffee at Trattoria al Forno Again, it’s a great cup to accompany breakfast, or an after dinner sweet. While we’ve shown you a few of our favorite spots to order and enjoy a press pot of coffee, there are lots of other places to get this indulgence. Have you ever wondered how the Disneyland Railroad steam engines run? Or what Jungle Cruise skippers do when they aren’t in their boats? Beginning this month, Disneyland park guests will have unique, limited-time opportunities to experience some of their favorite attractions in new ways. While the Disneyland Railroad is temporarily closed this year, guests at the Main Street and New Orleans Square Train Stations will be able to get up-close with the historic steam engines that have circled Disneyland park for decades, learn about these amazing machines firsthand from our own train engineers and even take a picture with an engine! Each engine will be accompanied by knowledgeable train engineers, who will share fun facts, details on how the engines operate, stories from the history of the Disneyland Railroad and more. While the world-famous Jungle Cruise undergoes refurbishment early this year, the skippers will still share their stories, adventures and humor with Disneyland park guests in front of the attraction. Join them as they recount tales from their travels while the Jungle Navigation Company headquarters readies for reopening later this year. The arrival of a New Year means that some of the most popular products from Disney Parks have been updated. Each year, we introduce a collection merchandise to celebrate a particular year (it’s what we call our “dated program”). I caught up with Disney Design Group artist Dave Keefer to learn what inspired this year’s artwork. “Music has played an important part of the Disney Parks experience,” explained Dave. “For the 2016 collection, we gave a nod to music from Disney Parks, which has created magic and memories for so many guests including myself. The art includes characters with instruments and other musical icons. At one point, we even considered making the number six in 2016 a treble clef.” Work on the 2016 collection started around 18 months ago. All of the artwork for the collection was assembled into a massive style guide, which merchandise developers and Disney Design Group artists referenced when creating products. Today, guests will find the artwork on a variety of items including graphic MagicBands, apparel, headware, Vinylmation figures, holiday ornaments, Dooney & Bourke handbags, plush, and much more. One of my favorite items is the coffee mug that uses a musical note for the handle. I’m also a fan of the open edition Orange Bird for Walt Disney World Resort. Dave also told me to look out for graphic designs inspired by popular trends in the marketplace. I love the oval-shaped, label artwork for Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts. There are also some ornate concert-like posters that include a number of musical notes. Look for these items in select merchandise locations at Disney Parks. There’s a new, high-pitched call coming from Rafiki’s Planet Watch at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, and it’s creating excitement among our cast members and guests. You’ll be surprised to learn this loud call is coming from a tiny animal, weighing only a few ounces! Please help us welcome a new Geoffrey’s marmoset baby! Two 3-year-old marmosets are the proud parents, and we are happy to tell you that they are demonstrating great parenting skills. You can often see the baby riding mom or dad’s back. Because the parents are keeping a close eye on the baby, we have been unable to identify whether the baby is a male or female. We are very comfortable with the level of parental care and are monitoring closely as we await the baby’s first neonatal check-up in a few weeks. These marmosets are part of the Species Survival Plan (SSP), program coordinated through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). The SSP is meant to strengthen long-term species-survival efforts by helping AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums manage species’ genetic diversity through detailed records of individual animals. In the wild, marmosets face threats of habitat infringement and being hunted for the pet trade. Although they are cute and very small – adults weighing 6-12 ounces – they have social needs that are difficult, if not impossible, to meet in a human family setting, and should not be considered when choosing a domestic pet. Marmosets are closely related to cotton-top tamarins, which you’ve probably read about in our Wildlife Wednesday series. Both monkeys have claws that help them gouge tree trunks and branches for tree sap, one of their favorite foods. Sometimes, friends, it’s best to look before you buy… Case in point: I’ve always enjoyed spying this charming snack cart hosted by Via Napoli in the Italy Pavilion whenever it comes out (sometimes it’s tucked away in less busy seasons). It’s affectionately known as the “Donkey Cart,” ‘cuz… well, DONKEY! Stand in Epcot’s Italy For a small stand with limited selections, the artwork is also pretty great. Seriously, you should check it out. Italy Snack Stand Artwork Italy Snack Stand Artwork But, back to my story… I always check out the menu here whenever the donkey makes an appearance, because it changes frequently. It’s offered everything from gelato to pizelles (Italian waffle cookies) in the past, but on this trip — while the gelato showed up again — the selection of drinks had expanded a bit. One of the inclusions was an Italian Fruit Soda for $4.25. Italy Snack Stand menu Not knowing exactly what it was, I asked about it, thinking maybe it was something akin to a hand-poured Italian Cream Soda. The Cast Member kindly showed me. And here it is… Italian Fruit Soda Hmm… . Now, I know for a fact that the Sanpellegrino Sparkling Blood Orange is both tasty and refreshing. But is it $4.25 for 11.15 fluid ounces worth of tasty and refreshing? Probably not when you can find the same thing elsewhere for much cheaper (e.g. a 6-pack at Wal-Mart costs $4.98, or 24 cans on Amazon.com for $16.97). I know that pricing at Disney is always a sensitive topic (and that’s putting it mildly). But often you have a chance first to learn about what you’re getting before you make your purchase. So the moral of my story is, if you can’t see the item, be sure to learn a little more about it before buying. Cast Members are friendly and helpful, and — as the saying goes — it never hurts to ask! Maybe a can of Sanpellegrino is worth $4.25 for you — I love the stuff, too — but I would have preferred a little more truth in advertising on the signage. At least with a $2.50 bottle of Coke the menu reads, “Coke,” instead of “Locally bottled, sweet carbonated soda” or something that would make me think, “Ooh, what’s that! It sounds interesting and unique!” Needless to say, I ended up not purchasing the Italian Fruit Soda. Are there any “unseen” items at Disney World that you are curious about?
