Earlier this month, we shared the exciting news that the first ride vehicle for Slinky Dog Dash, one of two major attractions planned for Toy Story Land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, has arrived at the park. The ride vehicle, which is themed after the character of Slinky from “Toy Story,” took Imagineers from multiple disciplines a few years to design, so the group was thrilled to see the finished product arrive on the site firsthand. According to the Imagineers, the vehicle was created to reflect Slinky’s personality, the movement and motion of a Slinky toy, and of course Slinky’s adorable look which will be visible throughout the land as the coaster moves along the track. “This is a ride for the whole family: it’s fun, it’s exciting, it’s thrilling, but it’s not scary,” said Imagineer Bob Vignec. “It’s a rollercoaster, but it’s also this fun character that will be out in the land. You sort of get a little bit of goosebumps seeing it here for the first time.” Toy Story Land is set to open at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in summer 2018. Last year, the Disney After Hours ticketed event nights debuted at Magic Kingdom Park and delighted guests with quick access to some of the park’s most popular attractions and character greetings. We’re happy to share today that Disney After Hours events will return for select dates in January, February and March 2018. If you’re new to Disney After Hours, an event night is limited to a small number of guests, allowing attendees to maximize their time in the park with little to no wait at 25 attractions and experiences, like Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Under the Sea ~ Journey of The Little Mermaid, Space Mountain and many more. The Disney After Hours ticket allows park entry as early as 7 p.m., which gives attendees time to enjoy the park’s nightly “Happily Ever After” fireworks, and then remain in the park until 11 p.m. and some nights to 12:00 a.m. Disney After Hours event nights are currently set for January 19, 26, and 30, February 8 and 15, March 1 and 8. New entertainment, new seating, two cool themed evenings – there’s lots that’s new for the 2017 Party for the Senses, the sensational evening of food, live entertainment and elegant fun at World ShowPlace in Epcot World Showcase. And it’s the 35th anniversary of Epcot, another reason to celebrate during the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival. If you’ve never been, Party for the Senses is a culinary extravaganza with dozens of tasting stations with wine pairings and craft cocktails and beers. Then on Oct. 21, chefs from Disney parks around the globe will come together to create an evening of international tastes – this has been a super-popular event the last couple of years. Disneyland Paris, Tokyo Disneyland, Shanghai Disney, Hong Kong Disneyland, Aulani and Disney Cruise Line chefs will join our Walt Disney World chefs to showcase the best of their cuisine. 5. Wow entertainment: the music takes this year’s event over the top. On Monday, Sept. 4, Circle D horses and cast members participated in the annual Labor Day parade in Norco, Calif. Although Disneyland Resort horses have participated in Norco parades before, this year the Circle D team put together the largest group of horses and cast members ever to participate in a community parade. The equine stars included Dallas, Chief, Bug and Finn, and participating cast members included Disneyland Resort Ambassador Alexa Garcia and Circle D Ranch Manager Roy Hungerford. Learn About: Casey’s Corner Magic Kingdom Disney World Restaurants Well, I can’t speak for everybody. But in my case, the answer is: Nope! Especially now that plastic cheese is back. Wait. That’s not right. PLASTIC CHEESE IS BACK! You know how I love this King of All Condiments — ooey, gooey yellow cheese that comes on rib-sticking favorites like Chili Cheese Nachos. Well, by now you know that Plastic Cheese disappeared for a while. We found some from time to time, but it was never enough. And we still couldn’t dunk our Corn Dog Nuggets in it whilst gazing lovingly at Cinderella Castle from the quaint patio of Casey’s Corner. Thank goodness those dark days are over! Welcome back to Casey’s Corner, home of amazing hot dogs and even more amazing plastic cheese! Atmosphere Casey’s is quintessential Main Street, U.S.A., fulfilling Walt’s vision of a Main Street reminiscent of one of his childhood home in Marceline, Missouri. It’s got tremendous architectural detail, from intricate molding to fabulous window casings. Casey’s Corner Inside the small ordering area are lots of decor pieces harkening back to a simpler time. Oh, and there’s lots of classy striped wallpaper, too (which I kind of love). Casey’s Decor Casey’s celebrates Casey at the Bat, so there are baseball details throughout, highlighting America’s pastime. Atmosphere Details at Casey’s Corner Mudville Banners The ordering area, unsurprisingly, continues the theme, right down to the beautiful wood moldings overhead. Casey’s Ordering Area You’ll also find a well-appointed toppings and condiments area, complete with sauerkraut, ketchup, and onions. Condiments and Toppings Indoor seating is available these days, for those desperate for air conditioning. (I say “these days” as a reference to the ol’ small bleachers that once occupied this space). Indoor Seating But when the weather conditions cooperate, it’s even better outside. It can get crowded out there, and the ducks and other birds do make the rounds. Outdoor seating by Hub refurbishment But the view? You’d be hard pressed to beat it. Cinderella Castle Eats On my most recent visit, I wanted to (continue to) test my theory that more cheese is always better. So before I ordered up a cup of “Cheese Sauce” – that’s the official name of plastic cheese — I ordered a Mac and Cheese Hot Dog. Mac and Cheese Hot Dog Yep, the Mac and Cheese Hot Dog is back in all its glory! Like all Casey’s hot dog creations, this one starts with an All-Beef Hot Dog on a Potato Roll. (FYI: Foot-long hot dog options are served on a regular roll — sans potato.) Casey’s Mac and Cheese Hot Dog That salty centerpiece is topped with a massive amount of gooey Mac and Cheese, plus a sprinkling of Bacon! This is a knife and fork kind of hot dog, folks. Or, at the very least, several napkins. So much mac. So much Cheese. So much hot dog. It really is an awesome combination of savory flavors and textures: salty hot dog, creamy mac and cheese, and BACON. Delicious in every way. Now, tremendous mac and cheese dog indulgence aside, it was time for the real star: Plastic Cheese. And, guys, it’s only $1.00 for a decent amount of cheese! I ordered mine with Corn Dog Nuggets (just the entree, minus the side of fries). I tried this combo (with queso blanco!) at Pecos Bill’s recently, and it’s so good! Corn Dog Nuggets with PLASTIC CHEESE The Nuggets are wonderfully golden brown, crisp on the outside and full of corn meal batter and mini dogs on the inside. One big cup of plastic cheese! And right beside it, a fabulous yellow pool of cheesy goodness! Now that I’ve provided guidance on the Cheese Consumption, you should know that Casey’s serves up Odwalla Lemonade Slushies — with a Mickey Straw! These frozen lemonade drinks (and there are many, many frozen slush-style drinks in every park) are crazy refreshing. To drink it while relaxing in the Hub eating Corn Dog Nuggets and Plastic Cheese? Frozen Lemonade with Mickey Straw! Please. Can I just do this everyday with my buddy, Mickey? You gotta have one! Or ten! Nosh or Not? Casey’s Corner is a must for you if: You’re looking for a classic American quick service meal in the Magic Kingdom. You don’t mind staring down a line for the best hot dogs ever. You love dining in the middle of all the Magic! Casey’s Corner is a skip for you if: You’re more into burgers (Cosmic Ray’s), Mexican food (Pecos Bill’s), seafood or healthier options (Columbia Harbour House). Waiting in line isn’t your thing (they’re just about ever-present here, folks). You’re making a beeline for all the attractions, so you’re not spending that much time on Main Street, U.S.A. Overall Casey’s Corner is simply iconic — and I have to stop in every time I visit the World. Plus, you can’t really get a more convenient location, right in the center of everything the Magic Kingdom has to offer. The fact that they serve up totally delicious (and Plastic) food means that even though it may not be a must-do every time for you, it’s a must-do at least once in the Magic Kingdom. In the coming weeks, guests at Disney Parks will be able to preview scenes from Disney•Pixar’s “Coco” in sneak peeks planned for Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts. Generously seasoned, this flavorful, vegetarian version of a hearty African stew gets even more protein from quinoa and yogurt toppings. You can toast the naan for chips, but the pillowy flatbread is just as delicious simply served warm on the side for sopping up the stew. Via Napoli, how do I love thee? Shall we count the ways? Learn About: Via Napoli Epcot Restaurants Disney World Restaurants Seriously, I would, but it would take too long. Since this Table Service restaurant opened in Epcot’s Italy Pavilion seven years ago, I’ve been among its biggest fans. I love the decor, with those massive pizza ovens named for Italian volcanoes, the huge open space with arches and chandeliers, and the colorful frescoes on the walls and ceilings. Oh, and did I mention there’s PIZZA involved, too? Via Napoli easily tops my list for serving up the Best Pizza in Disney World. It’s pretty much become one of those spots I visit whenever I have an excuse to do so. On my most recent visit, we started with a couple of drinks. And there is no shortage of options at Via Napoli. There are cocktails, signature drinks, and, of course, lots of vino. Via Napoli Drink Menu And have you ever checked out the Daily Drink Specials? Who doesn’t love a Wine Flight? Via Napoli Daily Specials On my visit, the Limoncello Mule was available for a limited time. Limoncello Mule at Via Napoli I’d seen this on social media and HAD to try it. Mules are so trendy right now, and I think they’re delicious, so win-win. The Limoncello Mule is comprised of Skyy Vodka, Limoncello, orange juice, pineapple juice, peach puree, lime juice, and ginger beer. And if the description isn’t enough to sway you, check out the garnish! Limoncello Mule The Limoncello Mule is as delicious — fruity, tart, tipsy — as it is cute. Hello, Mickey! But diners do not subsist on cocktails alone at Via Napoli! There are plenty of tempting options all over the menu. Via Napoli Food Menu But it’s honestly difficult to veer from some of our tried-and-true favorites. Pasta e Fagioli is a classic… and, yes, it’s available at pretty much every Italian restaurant I — and likely you — have ever been to. Pasta e Fagioli at Via Napoli But I do really enjoy it here. The broth is heartily savory, and it is packed with white beans, small noodles, and veggies. The folks at Via Napoli sprinkle a little grated parm on top for a little something extra. So the soup is a solid start. But the next starter… well, it’s a bit more indulgent. Check out the Bocconcini, and allow me to translate for you. That’s Fried Mozzarella there, folks! Fried Mozzarella at Via Napoli These always remind me of the Fried Cheese Curds that used to be available at Liberty Tree Tavern. And it was a sad day when those vanished from the menu. So this option at Via Napoli — which, by the way, you’ll find listed under the Children’s Entrees — most definitely scratches that itch. Just look at it… Fried Mozzerella Rich, gooey, and melted just right, the already terrific curds are perfect with the paired marinara. But it’s the light golden breading that differentiates these from your typical Mozz Sticks. Plan accordingly, because you may want to pick up a couple of orders. (If you get one for just yourself, you’ll be fending off your tablemates once they get a load of these.) Pizza is, of course, a must. And though a large Pepperoni Pizza doesn’t sound all that exciting when you consider all of the options in World Showcase, this is hardly your typical pie. Check out the curled, crisped, and spicy Old World pepperoni pieces that get all crunchy in the volcano pizza ovens and that creamy mozzarella cheese. (And yes, my husband couldn’t wait to try a piece before I took the pic. ;-D) Large Pepperoni Pizza at Via Napoli But, as always, it’s the ever-so-slightly charred thin crust that really makes the pizza at Via Napoli a special experience. The flour to create it is imported directly from Italy, but even more so it’s the water that makes the difference (it’s sourced from a spring that is similar to those in the Campania region). It’s Via Napoli’s own work of art, fired for just under 2 minutes in the volcano ovens. And, hey, here’s a tip: a large pepperoni is going to run you $33.00. Polish this thing off between two people (or more, if you load up on some Fried Mozzarella), and if you split it down the middle that’s $16.50 apiece. And THAT is what lands Via Napoli on our Top Disney World Meals Under $20 list! If you do decide to forgo a pizza, though, you might want to opt for the Piatti Alla Parmigiana con Pollo, or Chicken Parmesan. The Via Napoli version is served with roasted potatoes. Piatta Alla Parmigiana con Pollo This is usually wonderful, but on this visit it didn’t quite live up to expectations. But since this is the first time that Via Napoli has disappointed me, I’ll try it one more time before I put the kibosh on this one. Nosh or Not? You’ll definitely want to make that coveted Via Napoli ADR if: You love pizza and want to try authentic Italian pie. Via Napoli’s location fits in your World Showcase touring plan. You’re not a super adventurous eater, but you want to immerse yourself in a World Showcase dining experience. You can skip Via Napoli if: You’re not a big fan of pizza or Italian food in general. Spending a lot of time in World Showcase isn’t in your touring plan. You’re an adventurous eater and don’t think pizza is the World Showcase dining experience you’re looking for. Overall The verdict remains the same: I’ll always make room in my trip for Via Napoli. It’s become a little bit like home, even though it’s still “new” (relatively speaking, that is!) among World Showcase Table Service options. It’s also become one of my go-to choices for recommendations for friends planning a trip to Epcot. So if you still haven’t experienced a meal at Via Napoli, trust that it comes VERY highly recommended, and may just become part of your Epcot traditions as well. Just moments ago, The Walt Disney Company announced a commitment of $2.5 million to aid those impacted by Hurricane Irma. The funds will help the response and recovery efforts of the American Red Cross, UNICEF, Save the Children, and other nonprofits. “As millions of people now face the daunting challenge of putting their lives and communities back together in the wake of these historic hurricanes, they need our help,” said Robert A. Iger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company. “We’re donating $2.5 million to support relief and recovery efforts in response to Hurricane Irma. This is in addition to nearly $16 million we raised after Hurricane Harvey to help ensure storm victims have the support needed to recover and rebuild.” In addition, eligible Disney employee donations to qualified organizations involved in the Hurricane Irma relief effort will be matched dollar for dollar by Disney Employee Matching Gifts: A Program of The Walt Disney Company Foundation. During Hurricane Irma, Walt Disney World and the Disney Cruise Line donated meals, provided storage for supplies and power-utility vehicles, donated bedding to shelters, and made rooms available for first responders. Kaiaulu means a trade-wind breeze. In my last post, I wrote about the ukuna o ka la, or rays of the sun. Now, when things are heating up in the sun in Hawaiʻi, we all cherish the breezes and rain to help us keep cool. Did you know that we have hundreds of words in Hawaiian for wind and rain? That’s because each name changes depending on the location. When you first walk into Makaʻala, our lobby area at Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, you’ll enjoy the trade-wind breeze known as the Kaiaulu. This wind comes from the Waiʻanae mountain range and cools the land heading down towards the sea. It’s almost as if it comes to greet you as you walk through the door. It even brings the smell of our fresh flower lei in with you. Perhaps in the morning, you will enjoy the light breeze called Moani down by the ocean. It is a soothing accompaniment to the many fitness classes we offer including Beach and Paddleboard Yoga. Needless to say, it goes very well with a quick dip in our inviting lagoon. Or if you’re up for an adventure, go out and experience the misty rain called Tuahine when you participate in a tour of Manoa valley. This rain provides the magic that makes Manoa valley famous for rainbows. It’s not uncommon to see multiple rainbows at once! I think at Aulani Resort we are re-defining that old phrase: go wherever the wind may take you. There are so many more stories awaiting you on your next visit! A hui hou. To the finish line … and beyond! The first race weekend of the 2017-2018 runDisney season has come to an end after an exciting set of events at the Disneyland Resort celebrating the wonderful world of Pixar. Runners weren’t toying around with this year’s theme for the 2017 Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend and came ready with their rootinest tootinest crews! Take a look at a few of our favorite moments from throughout the weekend: The Disneyland 5K boasted an ‘incredible’ time for super heroes and runners alike, full of family, celebrating Pixar’s own super family from “The Incredibles.” Participants dashed through the course donning their own super suits for 3.1 miles of epic fun! Taking a step in the ‘fright’ direction, Disneyland 10K runners had all their ‘screams’ come true during the weekend’s next event celebrating “Monsters, Inc.” Throwing it back to Mike and Sulley’s days at Monsters University, participants felt the spirit of Oozma Kappa the whole race through. Space Rangers and Cowboys suited up and saddled up for the weekend’s final event, the Disneyland Half Marathon, celebrating “Toy Story.” Partners reached for the sky as they completed the 13.1 miles to the finish line. A big Andy’s-room congratulations to those runners who also completed the Disneyland Double Dare, finishing 19.3 miles over the weekend! Grim Grinning Ghosts aren’t the only ones coming out to socialize at Walt Disney World Resort, so are lots of families who are headed to celebrate Halloween at Magic Kingdom Park this season. The popular, Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party kicked off August 25, and there are many more spooktacular parties scheduled from now through November 1, 2017. The parties are perfect for kids of all ages, hence the “not-so-scary” theme, and all family members are encouraged to dress in their best Halloween costume. There are guidelines to follow, so make sure you read through the official costume guidelines. Moms Panelist Jane D., also has some great advice when concocting your costume for this year’s event. The nighttime, special ticket event is filled with amazing entertainment, delectable treats and everyone’s favorite, Mickey’s “Boo to You” Halloween Parade. Led by none other than the Headless Horseman himself, the parade is packed with Disney characters dressed in their favorite Halloween attire. Ghoulish floats filled with villains, pirates and princesses make their way down Main Street U.S.A. while smoke and eerie music fills the air, shares Crystal B. Many of your favorite attractions are also in operation during the party. From thrill rides such as Space Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, to classics like Pirates of the Caribbean and Peter Pan’s Flight there is something for everyone. And oh yes, the spirits at The Haunted Mansion are dying for you to visit them this Halloween season. (Please note, all attractions and experiences are subject to change without notice.) A Halloween party would not be complete without trick-or-treating, and this party is no exception to the rule. Grab your bag and fill it with goodies at candy stations throughout the park. Food allergies? Not a problem. Priscila N. says upon your arrival to the party simply ask a Cast Member for your teal treat bag. When trick-or-treating with this bag, you will be given a teal token at each treat station. At your convenience, you may redeem your token at the Allergy-Friendly Centers to receive your special treats. Speaking of treats, did we mention the Pumpkin Cheesecake Dome with a graham cracker streusel base, topped with a white chocolate Mickey? Or the Mickey-shaped Cinnamon Roll with orange icing and a chocolate spider web? To kick off the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 – October 15), the Mexico Pavilion in Epcot is having their Fiestas Patrias. This special celebrating Mexican Independence will take place at the pavilion this Saturday, September 16. Guests and their familia will be able to join cast members at Plaza de los Amigos for a Discovery Experience. This muy divertido scavenger hunt will help them learn more about Mexico and its Independence. The clues to answer the questions for the scavenger hunt will be hidden throughout the pavilion, which will be decorated for the occasion. Upon completion, guests will receive a small certificate to commemorate the special celebration. So if you are vacationing at Walt Disney World Resort this Saturday, be sure to stop by the Mexico Pavilion at Epcot.
