We’re excited to share that our plans for a major expansion of Hong Kong Disneyland have officially been approved by the Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Starting next year through 2023, we’ll be adding world-class attractions, entertainment and themed areas to bring to life some of the very best characters and stories of the Disney brand. Included in our expansion plans are a “Frozen“-themed area transporting guests to the kingdom of Arendelle, a new Marvel-themed area with thrilling attractions and entertainment celebrating your favorite Super Heroes, and a new entertainment venue called Moana’s Village Festival with a lively stage show. On top of all that, we’ll be transforming Sleeping Beauty Castle to showcase new daytime and nighttime spectaculars and entertainment experiences. There’s so much to do and see, and we can’t wait to bring you along on this journey with us. Keep an eye on the Disney Parks Blog for more expansion updates from Hong Kong Disneyland. Sous Chef Daniel Contreras is very proud of being able to add a bit of cultural flair to his dishes, especially the ones he has created for the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival. Daniel, who was born at Neiva in Colombia, has been working at Walt Disney World Resort since 2006, and one of the things that he has been able to incorporate into the food that he prepares is his love for his culture. Another love of his is corn, a staple in Colombian cuisine as well as in many other Latin American countries. No wonder his dish, smoked ribs with corn and black bean salad from the Smokehouse Outdoor Kitchen, is one of his favorites! Learn more about Chef Daniel and his inspiration and passion for food in this video! View the full article

Purple martins are beautiful migratory birds that complete a 6,000-mile roundtrip each year between North America, where they breed, and the Brazilian Amazon, where they spend the fall. Each year, more and more of these birds stop at the Walt Disney World Resort to choose a mate and raise a family, and Disney’s Conservation Team is working to learn as much as they can about this native species. It may sound challenging to study a bird that weighs only 2 oz. and flies more than 6,000 miles a year, but because purple martins rely almost exclusively on housing humans install for them, we are learning a great deal by monitoring their nests and observing the birds’ behavior. In collaboration with York University and the University of Manitoba, each year, we give each adult and nestling bird a “magic band” so we can tell who comes back next year for another Disney adventure. We track our birds to the Brazilian Amazon and back to learn what type of habitats need to be conserved so our birds can continue making their incredible yearly migrations. In a recently published scientific-journal article, our Conservation Team contributed to a study about purple martin migration with Dr. Kevin Fraser. This study showed how we used new GPS technology to pinpoint the exact location of where the birds roost in Brazil. Interestingly, they do not spend as much time in Brazilian cities where they have been observed previously like most people expected, but rather on small islands in the Amazon River and its tributaries. This is critical information because only about 17 percent of the roosts identified were in protected areas. This helps conservationists continue to develop new strategies to protect purple martins. Disney is proud to support efforts to conserve habitats that purple martins rely upon during their migration through Central and South America. In 2012, Disney helped plant 3 million trees in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest in collaboration with the Nature Conservancy’s Plant a Billion Trees Campaign. The Disney Conservation Fund has provided more than $4 million in support of conservation efforts in Latin America. Be sure to say hi to our conservation specialists if you see them conducting a nest check! You might even get to see a baby purple martin! You can see our conservation team in action at purple martin nest checks every Tuesday and Thursday at Epcot (behind MouseGear) at 11 a.m. and at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort (near Shutters) every Tuesday and Thursday at 9 a.m. through the end of June. The World of Disney Food is BIG. Planning a Disney vacation is serious business, and a big part of that is where, when, and what you’re going to eat. And there are a few Disney dining mistakes you should take care to avoid. Homecomin’ Fried Chicken Making assumptions, or failing to properly plan for your meals and snacks when you visit Walt Disney World, can make for a less than magical experience. But there’s good news! We know a thing or two about dining in Disney and we are ready to share what NOT to do! Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute to Book If you only take one piece of advice from this list, make it this one. Do not wait until you get to Walt Disney World to plan your dining. In fact, make those advance dining reservations just as soon as you can — at the 180 day mark! This is especially true if you want to experience a super popular Disney restaurant, like dinner at Be Our Guest Restaurant. Grilled Strip Steak at Be Our Guest By booking your restaurants ahead of time, you get to choose from the largest selection of options (the closer you get to your trip, the fewer restaurants will be available), but you’re not locked in. For most Disney World restaurants, you can always cancel reservations or re-arrange your dining up until the day before your ADR. Don’t Think You’re Too Old For a Character Meal What???? You aren’t booking a Character Meal because there are no kiddos in your group? I would super urge you to think again. Mickey Mouse! Character meals are some of the BEST deals around in Walt Disney World. There are a couple of reasons for this. First, CHARACTERS. If any part of your vacation involves meeting characters, I promise you, this is the best way to do it. Because. Donald. That means no waiting in a line, in the hot sun, and then getting to the front of the line and having the character handler say, “Nope, Donald’s gotta rest now, folks. He’ll be back in 20 minutes.” Because, see, Donald comes to YOU at the character meal. AND — there’s air conditioning involved. So pack away that sunscreen and that portable misty fan thingy. You won’t need them. Beside that, FOOOOD. Most of the time, character meals are either a buffet, or they’re all you care to enjoy family style. Family Breakfast Platter at ‘Ohana Either way, it gives you an opportunity to fill up on a really big meal for usually one table service credit on the Disney Dining Plan. (There are a few exceptions to the all you can eat set up, and Cinderella’s Royal Table is two table service credits. Be sure to review our Character Meal Page for the details.) Don’t Waste Disney Dining Plan Credits Believe it or not, we hear about this all the time. First timers, and even seasoned Disney veterans, fail to use all of their Disney Dining Plan meal and snack credits. How in the ‘World can this be? Truthfully, it often comes down to poor planning. And that’s why I refer you back to that top bullet point: make your plans ahead of time. Meatloaf Meal at The Plaza Restaurant It is completely possible to arrive in Walt Disney World for your vacation without advance dining reservations and find that the bulk of the table service restaurants are completely booked. And if you’ve paid for a standard Disney Dining Plan, that can mean leaving credits on the table. (Ha! See what we did there?) But it’s not just meals. Be mindful of your snack credits too. Peanut Butter Fudge And keep in mind that if you get to the end of your stay and have snack credits to burn, packaged candy and foods like Disney fudge travel well, and make swell souvenirs (or airplane snacks to keep that vacation going just a little longer). Don’t Assume It’s All Burgers, Fries, and Mickey Bars This is another biggie. If it’s been a while since you’ve visited Disney World, you may be extremely — and pleasantly — surprised at the sheer diversity of food offerings within the parks and resorts. Classic Poutine Sure, you can get all of those American classics and iconic treats here. But did you know that you can also get indulgent poutine at Disney Springs, incredible French pastries and bread in Epcot, and some serious sushi at — well — lots of places, and more? It’s a food lover’s paradise, regardless of your tastes and whims. Duo at Les Halles in Epcot’s France Beyond the international flair those eats represent (you could have authentic treats from more than ten different countries just from Epcot alone), Disney has some truly creative and top tier dining in their table service restaurants. Enjoy an incredible steak at Le Cellier or Yachtsman Steakhouse. Le Cellier Filet Explore the flavors of Africa at Jiko, Sanaa, or Boma. Or enjoy the pinnacle of fine dining at Victoria and Albert’s. The sky is the limit. Don’t Miss the Epcot Food and Wine Festival We’ve saved our best tip for last: Do NOT miss the Epcot Food and Wine Festival. Epcot Food and Wine Festival The annual Festival, which celebrates its 22nd straight year in 2017, takes place from August 31 through November 13. That’s a record 75 days! The Epcot Food and Wine Festival offers something for everyone. International Food Marketplace Booths line the World Showcase Promenade, and even stretch into Future World. Frozen Daiquiri Ice Pop from France Booth Low Cost Culinary Demonstrations and Beverage Seminars offer guests the opportunity to try new things, while Special Events like Party for the Senses and special dining events throughout the Epcot Pavilions are indulgent and worth the splurge. The Parisian Breakfast And don’t forget the Eat to the Beat Concert Series! It’s a great way to cap off a wonderful day at the Festival. Don’t Miss Out on Any Disney Fun! What’s better than a day at Castaway Cay on your Disney cruise? Two days at Castaway Cay! This summer, we’re offering nine special voyages that give you double the fun at our island paradise in the Bahamas. These 4- and 5-night cruises aboard the Disney Dream depart from Port Canaveral, Fla., in June and July. In addition to two days at Castaway Cay, they also include a stop at Nassau, making for the perfect Bahamian getaway. When you double dip at Castaway Cay this summer, here are just some of the ways to take advantage of more time at this little slice of heaven: 1) Hang out at both the family and adult-only beaches. Swimming, snorkeling and building sand castles makes for the perfect day at Castaway Cay Family Beach. But your kids also won’t want to miss the water play area and games at Scuttle’s Cove, where they’ll hang out with counselors and friends they met on the ship, giving you the chance for hammock time at the adult-only Serenity Bay. For an extra indulgence, schedule a couple’s massage in a cabana on the beach. 2) Explore the island. When you see the crystal clear waters and step foot on the warm sand, it’s easy to stay put on the beach all day long. But Castaway Cay has more to offer than just the perfect beach day. There are a number of paths to the island’s interior, including to an observation tower with an incredible view of the entire island and the ship, which can be explored either on foot or bicycle. 3) Get out on the water. There’s no shortage of ways you can enjoy the view of Castaway Cay from the tropical waters of the Bahamas, with water cycles, paddleboats, sea kayaks, sailboats and stand-up paddle boards for rent. You can also join a Port Adventure that takes you further out in the turquoise waters, such as a banana boat thrill ride, a glass bottom boat scenic voyage or a backcountry fishing excursion. 4) Find the Disney magic. Throughout the island, you’ll be treated to surprises from Disney characters, including special meet-and-greets and dance parties. Get your photo taken with the Fab Five, Jack Sparrow, Olaf and others, and then grab your snorkel to explore the 12-acre underwater trail dotted with sunken treasures, including a submarine from the classic Disney attraction 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and a statue of a certain familiar mouse. 5) Run the 5K and do yoga on the beach. On your first morning at Castaway Cay, explore the island and take in the lush tropical landscape with your family by running, jogging or walking the Castaway Cay 5K. Then on your second day, start your morning with a relaxing session of yoga at Serenity Bay. Both activities help you stay in shape and maximize your time by getting you out on the island early. Those of you who have double dipped at Castaway Cay before, what are your suggestions for first-time double dippers? View the full article

When James Cameron’s sci-fi epic “Avatar” opened eight years ago, the experience of the film was the biggest selling point — Cameron hadn’t just created another world, he put the audience in it. As Walt Disney once said, “You can design and create, and build the most wonderful place in the world. But it takes people to make the dream a reality.” Decades later, it’s no different for Pandora – The World of Avatar, which will come alive on May 27 thanks to the enthusiasm and talent of our 700 cast members who were selected to open this epic new land. Cast members are in training now to help guests soar through the skies on the back of a banshee in the attraction Avatar Flight of Passage, sail through a bioluminescent rainforest in the family-friendly attraction Na’vi River Journey and walk beneath towering floating mountains. In addition to training for these new roles, cast members will be immersed in the Na’vi culture, by learning about their language, environment and way of life. One example is the way cast members will be able to welcome guests to this awe-inspiring land with the common Na’vi word for hello – Kaltxi (kahl-T’IH). In fact, each cast member on Pandora has received a handbook with some common Na’vi phrases, such as Oel ngati kameie [well NGAH-tee KAH-mey-yeh]. In the native language of Pandora, this means, “I see you.” Here’s a first look at the special nametags for cast members representing Alpha Centauri Expeditions (ACE), a futuristic travel company that prepares visitors from Earth for their exciting adventure to Pandora. You might also notice that cast members who are “Earning their Ears” may be wearing a ribbon that features the Na’vi word for student: Numeyu. The multi-year expansion at Disney’s Animal Kingdom has created 1,500 jobs since construction began, including about 800 construction jobs and the 700 operational roles specifically for Pandora, ranging from engineers, attraction hosts, food and beverage and more. To the Disney cast members joining us to help create unforgettable memories for guests as they visit Pandora, welcome … or as the Na’vi say, Zola’u nìprrte’! View the full article

There are many special numbers to celebrate as we announce the 22nd annual Epcot International Food & Wine Festival, opening Aug. 31 and running through Nov. 13 – that’s 75 days to sip, savor and enjoy one of America’s top food festivals (13 more than last year). And to celebrate the park’s opening 35 years ago in 1982, there will be a record number of Marketplaces – 35 in all – stretching around World Showcase and into Future World. While the Marketplaces play a starring role, we recommend planning ahead so you don’t miss your favorite celebrity chefs, hands-on culinary workshops and demonstrations at the Festival Center, Party for the Senses, or your favorite artists at one of the nightly Eat to the Beat concerts. Stay tuned. We’ll let you know when schedules are in place and bookings for specialty festival events open this summer. Chefs are busy at work on new dishes for the Marketplaces, paired with wines, beers and ciders. We got a taste of the new crispy chicken with griddled cornbread and red-eye gravy for the Farm Fresh Marketplace and the spicy Korma Chicken with cucumber-tomato salad, almonds, cashews and warm naan bread from the India Marketplace– just two of the intriguing and delectable new tastes that will be in the 2017 cookbook. Another favorite was the charcuterie in a cone from the Spain Marketplace, perfect for strolling and tasting. For a favorite sweet, it’s back to India with the pistachio cardamom cake with a dollop of chocolate coconut mousse. And these are just a sampling of dozens of new tastes. This year there are more family favorites, too, with the Ratatouille-inspired scavenger hunt back for another year as well as culinary demos and dishes geared toward kids’ palates. Along with Party for the Senses, the festival includes specialty dining and pairing events at World Showcase restaurants and events at the resort hotels such as Brunch with a Twist at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. Keep an eye out for details this summer at epcotfoodfestival.com. View the full article

I’ve always loved the idea of Mother’s Day – maybe because I was blessed with the best mom out there? (Yes, I’m talking to you, Darleen Clark!) This year, as I’m just weeks away from expecting my first child, the holiday holds extra significance for me, and I can’t think of a better place than Disney Springs to celebrate the woman who brought you into the world. Mother’s Day is May 14th, but at Disney Springs, you can start pampering her now with special promotions and limited-time offerings already underway at many retailers. And if your mom prefers her “thank you” in the form of a delicious meal, select restaurants are serving up special menus on her big day. Read on to find out what I’m most excited about, then see the full listing in the graphic below: Senses – A Disney Spa: For the first time at Disney Springs, guests can enjoy their choice of chair massages, Disney-inspired nail wraps by Jamberry, nail polish applications, updos, or even eyeshadow art at Marketplace Co-Op. With prices starting at $25 plus tax and services offered on a first come, first served basis, the Spa staff will be onsite from May 4-14, 2017. Disney Floral & Gifts: Back by popular demand, the talented Disney floral team will be coming back to Marketplace Co-Op from May 1 – May 16, 2017 to offer a variety of flower arrangements and custom baskets, perfect for mom. Pandora – The World of Avatar at Disney’s Animal Kingdom opens May 27, and we’re learning a little more about the dining options in the new land. Satu’li Canteen Concept Art ©Disney When Pandora opens a new fast-casual restaurant, Satu’li Canteen, and a new drink station called Pongu Pongu will also open in the land. And Disney has released a few more details about what guests can expect when dining in Pandora. Pongu Pongu Concept Art ©Disney Satu’li Canteen is a former RDA (Resources Development Administration) Mess Hall located inside a Quonset-hut structure. These days, the Canteen offers a peaceful dining experience for travelers to Pandora and is run by Alpha Centauri Expeditions (ACE). The restaurant will offer 330 seats indoors and an additional 190 outside seats. The menu at Satu’li Canteen is inspired by the “healthful bounty” on Pandora and will feature “wholesome grains, fresh vegetables, and hearty proteins.” The centerpiece of the dining room in this fast-casual location is an on-stage grill that will “bring all five senses into play” according to Disney. Guests at Satu’li Canteen can customize their Canteen Bowls with a base of quinoa and vegetable salad; red and sweet potato hash; mixed whole-grain and rice; or romaine and kale salad. Wood-grilled chicken, slow-roasted beef, sustainable fish or chili-spiced fried tofu can be added, and the bowls are topped with harred onion chimichurri, black bean vinaigrette, or creamy herb dressing. ©Disney Other menu options at the Canteen include Cheeseburger Steamed Pods or Vegetable Curry Steamed Pods served with root vegetable chips and crunchy vegetable slaw. The kids menu includes grilled chicken or beef, fish or tofu with greens or rice; a hot dog wrapped in Parker House dough; cheese quesadilla, or a cheeseburger bao bun. Desserts at Satu’li Canteen are Blueberry Cheesecake with Passion Fruit Curd or Chocolate Cake with a Crunchy Cookie, Banana Cream and Goji Berries. Blueberry Cheesecake with Passion Fruit Curd ©Disney The Satu’li Canteen is the first Disney World restaurant to offer Mobile Order for guests. Mobile Order, which will be accessible via the My Disney Experience app, will allow guests to order and pay for meals at Satu’li Canteen on-the-go, subsequently bypassing the ordering queue upon arrival. Not only will guests be able to select their menu items of choice, they’ll also be able to customize their order as well as prepay for their meal. Pongu Pongu is the new drink kiosk adjacent to Satu’li Canteen. The name means “party party” in Na’vi and the watering hole is said to be “as eclectic as its Expat owner.” The signature drink at Pongu Pongu is the Frozen Nectar, a mix of frozen limeade with layered flavors of Granny Smith Apple and Desert Pear topped with bursting mango boba balls. ©Disney Other beverages include the Screaming Banshee Margarita and Avatar Private Label Ale. Drinks will be available in a tiki-inspired mug with an Avatar “juju” light up cube. Guests can satisfy their sweet tooth with the Lumpia – a pineapple, cream cheese spring roll. With so much good food and unique beverages we can’t wait to dine in Pandora! Will you be visiting Satu’li Canteen or Pongu Pongu on your trip to Pandora? Let us know in the comments.
