Whether you’re a fan of the light side or the dark side, there’s so much in store now that Season of the Force has returned to Disneyland Paris. This year, on top of thrilling daytime and nighttime spectaculars and all of your favorite character appearances, a one-of-a-kind exhibition is also on display at Walt Disney Studios Park. For the very first time, Disneyland Paris is home to five large-scale vehicles inspired by the Star Wars galaxy! Built by fans, these intergalactic icons offer a unique chance to immersive yourself in the epic saga like never before. Models include an X-wing starfighter, ETA-2 Jedi starfighter, Imperial tie fighter, A-wing fighter and a combat assault tank. Fans will also see a few updates to last year’s offerings, including scenes from Star Wars: The Last Jedi in the nighttime projection show Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular at Walt Disney Studios Park and Star Tours: The Adventures Continue at Disneyland Park. Star Wars Hyperspace Mountain is also open as part of the 25th Anniversary celebration. The legendary characters of the Empire, the First Order and the Resistance will all make appearances for Season of the Force. Today, artist Ashley Taylor imagines what Rapunzel and Flynn Rider would do first if they had the chance to visit New Fantasyland at Magic Kingdom Park. Winter is the perfect time of year to kick back and enjoy some warm soup with family and friends, so it’s appropriate that January is National Soup Month! If you’re craving that warm cozy feeling, then you’ll want to try one of the many delicious soups we have available at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts. At Disneyland Park, you can find some delicious chicken gumbo at Café Orleans in New Orleans Square. And at Harbour Galley in Critter Country, you’ll find some classic cheddar broccoli soup, clam chowder and a seasonal soup, which currently is a chicken pot pie. What’s even better is that all of these are served in sourdough bread bowls! You can also find sourdough bread bowls at Pacific Wharf Café in Disney California Adventure Park, which features clam chowder, broccoli and cheese, and loaded baked potato soups. In addition, Carnation Café is currently offering baked potato soup with bacon, cheddar, Monterey Jack, sour cream and chives. And if you’re dining at Carthay Circle Restaurant, you won’t want to miss the soup of roasted parsnip accented with winter pears, dried cranberries and rosemary ham. Here on the east coast, Walt Disney World Resort has some delightful soups of its own, like the famous Canadian Cheddar Cheese Soup that can be found at Le Cellier Steakhouse in Epcot. This soup is made with Moosehead Beer and applewood-smoked bacon and pairs perfectly with pretzel bread. This cheddar cheese soup can also be found at Refreshment Port in a smaller, on-the-go portion! If you travel to the China pavilion and visit Nine Dragons Restaurant, you’ll find some delicious hot-and-sour soup. Or take a stroll to The Land to visit Sunshine Seasons, where you can pick up some beef chili, pumpkin squash soup or roasted tomato soup. In Magic Kingdom Park, you’ll find some tasty New England clam chowder and vegetarian chili at Columbia Harbour House in Liberty Square. And over in New Fantasyland, if you’re dining at Be Our Guest Restaurant, you’ll find one of my personal favorite soups – the French onion soup topped with a crouton and Gruyère cheese for both the lunch and dinner periods, also vegetarian! For lunch, you’ll also find Potato Leak Soup on the menu, while on the dinner menu you’ll find delicious a lobster bisque served with crème fraîche. And just a quick monorail ride away, Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa has their own traditional French onion soup – Caramelized Onion Soup Gratinée, which can be found at the Grand Floridian Café. Other dining locations with gourmet soups include The Turf Club Bar and Grill at Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa, where you can order a creamy forest mushroom soup with herb oil and shiitake mushrooms. And at The Hollywood Brown Derby in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, you’ll find an Florida Tomato Soup served with a Cotswold cheddar fritter. On safari at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park? Stop by Tiffins to try their butternut squash soup with coconut-curry poached Key West pink shrimp. Or if you’re staying at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, then you’ll be excited to find that Boma – Flavors of Africa has 13 different authentic African soups and stews, including Ghanian Oxtail Stew and spicy Nigerian peanut soup – yum! I know it’s hard to believe, with so many truly delicious bread puddings available at Walt Disney World Resort (‘Ohana Bread Pudding at Polynesian Village Resort, Butterscotch Bread Pudding at Plaza Restaurant, Ger’s Bread Pudding at Raglan Road — to name a few crowd pleasers!), but we totally have a new favorite! You can find it at House of Blues in Disney Springs’ West Side! House of Blues The Toffee Bread Pudding is perfectly moist, with layers of custard-soaked bread and bits of toffee throughout. It’s served on a sweet toffee sauce, which is terrific as well. But the star of this puddin’ is the Whiskey Butter on top. This flavorful butter is like the richest frosting you’ll ever taste. I asked for extra because that’s how I roll. Toffee Bread Pudding And because dripping, melting frosting-butter makes for the best photos, you’ll want to see this close up. Ahhhh-mazing. We hear it again and again (and we’ve said it ourselves): Cinderella’s Royal Table is a must at least once in your Disney World vacation life. Learn About: Cinderella’s Royal Table Magic Kingdom Disney World Restaurants And most guests who’ve dined in this hard-to-book restaurant inside Cinderella Castle agree that you’re really not there for the food. But the ambiance! The princesses! The views! The whole dining experience (did we mention it’s inside the castle?!) is the draw, even if the food is… a little hit or miss. And it’s that experience that keeps Cinderella’s Royal Table hopping — with Advance Dining Reservations (ADR) ideally being made right at the 180 day mark — 180 days before the first day of your vacation. (Learn more about making dining reservations at Disney restaurants here.) If you do get an ADR, prepare to be dazzled by the decor and wooed by the energy in the restaurant. You definitely get the sense that you’re in a special space, and with princesses swooping in for a chat and wishing stars waving in the air, it’s a one of a kind meal. Cinderella’s Royal Table Atmosphere You access Cinderella’s Royal Table via the passage that leads straight through Cinderella Castle. You’ll find the check in desk at the Fantasyland end of the passage, and you’ll enter the castle via Cinderella’s foyer after you’ve checked in. From there, you’ll head immediately into the Cinderella photo line. If you DON’T want to get your picture taken with Cinderella, just move past the line set-up and take a seat on one of the little couches on either side of the room until your name is called. Cinderella’s Foyer If you stay in the line, you’ll soon meet the main princess herself and await your party’s name being called. (Don’t be surprised if your party is suddenly full of lords and ladies!) A photopass photographer is there to take photos of everyone with Cindy, but they’ll also take pictures with your camera if you don’t want to purchase a photopass picture. Cinderella The foyer is grand — complete with an ornate fireplace (no cinders in sight!) and royal shields. Foyer Fireplace Ceiling details are stately, with wood beams and elaborate chandeliers. Details Chandelier If you (or your kiddos) look closely, you might even spot Jacques and Gus Gus overlooking all the action! Jacques and Gus The dining room is located upstairs (there’s a winding staircase and an elevator). The view from the second level looking down into the foyer gives you a little idea of the scale and set-up. (You can also see the line set-up here.) Looking down into the foyer As you go upstairs, we recommend bracing yourself for the beauty that lies ahead. Because the dining room is… spectacularly royal. Massive stained glass windows let the sunlight (or at night — the fireworks!) shine through. Looking out to Fantasyland Views overlooking Fantasyland just add to the wonder. If you dine before park opening, you’ll get to watch the crowds disperse into the land below. Views Vaulted ceilings and colorful flags create great vertical space and make the restaurant feel open and airy. Vaulted Ceilings There are castle-worthy light fixtures casting a warm glow. Light fixture Seating at Cinderella’s is at tables with comfy padded chairs. The design of the seating is unobtrusive, not competing with the elaborate decor that fills the dining room. Tables are organized on two different levels, providing views across the restaurant for those who aren’t near the windows and breaking up the space a little. Table Seating The “show” here takes place in cycles. The cast members seat a bunch of guests, then, about mid-way through your meal, you’ll fear a fanfare and the princesses will arrive one by one. Princesses cycle through the entire restaurant, and there are a couple of little sessions where they might twirl and dance, bringing kiddos along with them. Then, once all the princesses have been announced and gone through the restaurant, the next session of guests starts being seated for the whole thing to start over again. Cinderella’s is a VERY POPULAR RESTAURANT, and service, as a result, is quite rushed so that they can fit in more table turnovers. It’s a very expensive meal, so if you’d like to relax and take your time, know that you CAN. You don’t have to rush just because you’re being rushed. On our visit we saw the most common Cinderella’s Royal Table princesses (although royalty may fluctuate from time to time): Snow White, Aurora, Ariel, and Jasmine. Snow White Aurora Ariel Jasmine Princess interactions differ depending on lots of variables, but we often see princesses getting right down to seated child level here, engaging kids one-on-one. Remember that a character meal is a terrific way to see several characters in one place without a long wait (or a sunburn from waiting outside!). Meet and Greet As part of the experience at Cinderella’s Royal Table, dining princesses and princes will receive a wand or sword and a wishing star. Throughout the meal, lights will flicker and an announcement will be made to allow everyone to make a wish. These are souvenirs that little royals (and big ones!) can take with them. Wand and Wishing Star Ooh — pastries. Let’s take a look at the food! Eat Tables are set before arrival, with a coffee mug, silverware, small plate, and napkin. Shortly upon arrival, diners receive a plate of pastries and a glass of juice. (Orange juice is the default, but guests can request something different.) Table Set Up The pastries are pretty good — and there’s a decent variety: Blueberry Mickey Muffin, Apple Puff Pastries, Cinnamon Rolls, Raspberry Palmiers, and a sweet Pecan Roll. (There’s also fruit, but, you know: carbs.) Pastries The Blueberry Mickey Muffin is probably the most kid-friendly of the group, and it’s nicely moist and sweet with plump berries and golden ears. Blueberry Mickey Muffin While downing all the carbohydrates, diners peruse the menu, which has only six adult options. (Kids get a standard eggs, sausage, Mickey Waffle plate — but speak up if you need something different!) Click on the menu below to enlarge it. Breakfast Menu — click to enlarge There’s decent variety within the limited options, including a Traditional Breakfast and a Healthy Choice. But I was looking to dig into a couple of the more location-specific options. Here’s something to note: at my many visits to Cinderella’s, I’ve had different answers to “is this all-you-care-to-enjoy?” For a while, it was. Guests could order seconds, or multiple entrees. My server on this visit said that it was NOT all you can eat, and each person gets one entree. Breakfast is served! First up is the Caramel Apple Stuffed French Toast. This sweet breakfast option is decent. The caramel and apple are, of course, great partners. Caramel Apple Stuffed French Toast The inside is dense and doughy, and there’s not enough caramel sauce to compensate for all of that dough. The apples are packed in there, and they are cut into big chunks so you definitely know what you’re eating. But the toast itself is a small challenge to get through. This is good overall, and will be your choice if you’re looking for dessert for breakfast. Interior of Caramel Apple Stuffed French Toast Our second entree was markedly better. The Beef Tenderloin and Egg is an upscale take on steak and eggs. The beef was well-seasoned and cooked beautifully for me (ask if you prefer a different doneness!) and is perched on a Potatoes and Cheese Frittata. The frittata is tasty, and with pieces of soft potato baked into it, it’s hearty enough to balance the substantial beef. Some Broccolini is hiding between the beef and frittata, and the ah-maz-ing Boursin Cheese Sauce and Chive Oil add tons of flavor. Beef Tenderloin and Egg This was my favorite of the two entrees, by far! It’s super filling and in great balance. Nosh or Not You’ll want to mingle with royalty at Cinderella’s Royal Table if: You appreciate a full dining experience that isn’t all about the food. Dining in Cinderella Castle fulfills some serious childhood dreams. You want to enjoy a classy character meal with the princesses. You might want to skip Cinderella’s Royal Table if: The idea of spending a bunch of money (like $70+ per adult) on a princess character meal isn’t in your plans. You don’t want to look down onto the Carousel — you want to ride it ASAP! You want to dine on the best food WDW has to offer — even if that means dining elsewhere. Cinderella’s Royal Table Tips Book your dining experience 180 days in advance if possible If your child is interested in Bibbidy Bobbidy Boutique, consider having him or her go to their appointment before dining with the princesses so they’ll be all dolled up themselves for the photos. Again, even though you may be rushed by your server, your dining pace is up to you. Have a plan for how you’ll handle meeting the princesses. Let them know that you’re going to take a picture with each child, or a picture with each camera. They want your experience to be unforgettable, so giving them a heads’ up on how to do that is helpful. Prepare your kids with fun things to talk to the princesses about (it’s always fun to ask them about their movie or character) for some great video fodder or photos. Head to the restroom right when you sit down so you don’t miss any of the fun. Overall Breakfast at Cinderella’s Royal Table might just be our favorite time to dine there. The food was decent — great, even, in the case of the tenderloin. And the brightness of the restaurant and the views of a brand new day dawning in Fantasyland are invigorating. The Downtown Disney District at the Disneyland Resort is continuing its ambitious, promenade-wide transformation in 2018. Multiple new venues and significant refurbishments to marquee dining and retail locations, including the World of Disney store, will be completed throughout the year while Downtown Disney District remains open to guests. The result will be a fresh, one-of-a-kind Disney experience, immersing guests by day and night in the greatest mix of family-friendly dining, shopping and entertainment. Wildly popular San Diego-based brewer Ballast Point will open its first Orange County location in Downtown Disney District later this year. Ballast Point pairs its high-quality, award-winning beers with an extensive menu of Southern California cuisine—salads, small plates, flatbreads and entrees featuring local, sustainable and seasonal ingredients. The space will house the first-ever on-site brewery, tasting room, kitchen and outdoor beer garden at Downtown Disney District. Construction is scheduled to begin soon, across from Catal Restaurant and Uva Bar. Recently opened in Downtown Disney District is the multi-sensory experience Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire by ILMxLAB and The VOID. The hyper-reality experience transports guests deep into the Star Wars universe, allowing them to walk freely and untethered throughout the space. Other exciting experiences slated to open in 2018 include: World of Disney will be reimagined into a new, dynamic and distinctly Disney retail environment. The flagship store will remain open to guests for shopping during the majority of the refurbishment, with work expected to be completed in phases throughout 2018. Splitsville Luxury Lanes will offer a unique combination of dining, drinks, bowling and entertainment. Opening on January 29. Disney Home will offer fans a variety of Disney-themed home goods. Opening in February 2018. Naples Ristorante e Pizzeria will undergo renovations to expand its outside patio with a new outside bar. Inside, three wood burning ovens will be installed to better meet guests’ demands for authentic Napoletana-style pizza pies. The restaurant will remain open throughout construction, which is slated to be completed in fall 2018. In early January, I started the year with the vigor and gusto of a woman ready to tackle 2018 full force – committing to healthier eating, more sleep and extra exercise. Almost a month in, and the results are mixed, at best. Minnie Mouse has had quite the week! Just yesterday, Minnie was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Hollywood California, in honor of her 90 years in the entertainment industry. But before she left for Hollywood, guests at Disney Springs at Walt Disney World Resort and Downtown Disney District at Disneyland Resort celebrated all-things Minnie Mouse and National Polka Dot Day in a bicoastal #RockTheDots celebration. At Disney Springs, guests “rocked their dots” by wearing Minnie-inspired outfits to special DJ dance parties and enjoyed special photo opportunities. They were also surprised with an appearance by Minnie herself, who stopped off at Disney Springs on her way to Hollywood. Recently, ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex opened a brand-new 8,000 seat arena, built to host a wide variety of major indoor sports including cheerleading, basketball, volleyball, gymnastics and so much more. But for me, the most exciting part about this new arena is the FOOD! Concessions play a huge part in modern spectator sports and if you’re anything like me, you love going to town on some yummy nachos or a good burger while you watch your favorite sports team. The Arena at ESPN Wide World of Sports houses seven concession stands and 35 carts and kiosks, all featuring brand new menus with some delicious eats. Here’s a look at just a few of the many new items you can get! On the savory side, you’ll find classic options like soft pretzels, donut-breaded chicken nuggets and personal pizzas with sausage, vegetables or pepperoni. But that’s not all; there’s also amazing offerings like pork or chicken tacos with pico de gallo and avocado crema or loaded tater barrels topped with cheese, sour cream, bacon and chives. For the burger fans out there, traditional hamburgers and cheeseburgers are offered, but you’ll also be pleased to find the Frita Cubana Burger with a chorizo and beef patty topped with cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickle, ketchup, mayo, mustard and fried potato sticks. And if a sandwich is more your style, try a meatball sub or a chicken and waffle sandwich with bacon and chipotle or maple mayo and served with tasty tater barrels. Moving on to the sweet stuff, the arena serves everything from churros to milkshakes and cheesecake push pops and even Dole Whip! That’s right, if you’ve ever had the popular pineapple Dole Whip from Magic Kingdom Park or Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, you’ll also find it in the concessions here at the arena. You’ll also find cheesecake push pops with layers of fruit, nuts and whipped cream – yum! These delicious concessions are just a few of the many options available to guests attending events at the new arena. And in addition to concessions throughout the complex, you can also pay a visit to the ESPN Wide World of Sports Grill if you’re looking for a sit-down experience. Mobile Order — a process available via the My Disney Experience app, which gives guests the chance to bypass the register lines in participating restaurants by ordering and paying for their food in advance, has been available in select Counter Service spots since May 2017. The service has been limited, however, to locations in all four parks and Disney Springs. Mobile Order Pickup at Casey’s Corner But this weekend, the service made its debut in a Disney World Resort: The Contemporary Resort’s Contempo Cafe! Contempo Cafe on Mobile Order screenshot We can only presume that the process will roll out to Counter Service locations in other Resorts, and we will continue to update our Mobile Order Page as the service expands. So, be sure to read all about Mobile Order — including how it works and all participating locations — here! Remember, Mobile Order is still only able to accept payment by credit card, so guests paying with Disney Dining Plan credits or gift cards (or hoping to have discounts applied) won’t be able to do so with Mobile Order as of yet. It’s almost time for Disneylanders to Let the Good Times Roll in the Downtown Disney District when Splitsville Luxury Lanes opens on January 29th! Mickey and Minnie Bowling Balls at Splitsville Similar to the Splitsville in Disney Springs, the bowling and dining spot will serve classic bowling alley eats alongside not-your-typical bowling fare. So while you’ll find things like good ol’ burgers and fries and Macho Nachos on the menu… Macho Nachos ©Disney … you’ll also be able to order items unique to Splitsville. For instance, Bowls will also be featured at the Splitsville location on the west coast, like the Poke Bowl (choice of salmon, ahi tuna, or tofu with pickled radish on top of bamboo rice, further topped with spicy mayo, Nori threads, sesame seeds, scallions and Togarashi spice). And the Sweet N’ Spicy Chicken Bowl will feature tempura-battered chicken, broccoli, and red and green peppers tossed in spicy Thai chili sauce, all served over sushi rice. On April 15, 1983, Tokyo Disneyland opened its gates as the first Disney theme park built outside of the U.S. and has now grown to become Japan’s most popular family destination. Starting this April, join us as we celebrate the park’s 35th Anniversary during the ‘Happiest Celebration!’ The festivities will take place from April 15, 2018, through March 25, 2019, and both parks will be decorated for the occasion. Over at Tokyo Disneyland, World Bazaar will be transformed into Celebration Street. You can also enjoy a new daytime parade, “Dreaming Up!” and catch a glimpse of a new nighttime spectacular “Celebrate! Tokyo Disneyland” at Cinderella Castle. You can join Donald Duck, Jose Carioca, Mickey Mouse and friends during “Let’s Party Gras” at Theatre Orleans, and walk over to the newly reopened “it’s a small world” with dozens of new figures based on characters from Disney films. Sail to Tokyo DisneySea to witness the “Happiest Celebration on the Sea,” a brand new water show starring Mickey, Duffy and Friends. Then visit The Big Apple during a new show at Dockside Stage, “Hello, New York!” Don’t forget to also say “hi” to Duffy and ShellieMay at the Village Greeting Place in their new costumes. Guests across both parks can enjoy the Happiest Mickey Spots – with 35 special Mickey statues, to be exact. They are the perfect place to snap a photo and commemorate the anniversary across the resort. If you have a Happiest Memory Maker, the statues may just say hello back! Puntarenas, Costa Rica, is one of the tropical destinations on our Panama Canal Disney Cruise this April. Puntarenas, meaning “sandy point” in Spanish, sits on a long, narrow peninsula in the Gulf of Nicoya on the Pacific side of Costa Rica. With active volcanoes, cloud forests, fern grottoes and a 264-mile coastline, it is the perfect playground for hiking, whitewater rafting, kayaking, mountain biking, horseback riding, surfing, snorkeling, fishing and more. Here are a few of my recommendations for Port Adventures… Poas Volcano & Sarchi – On this adventure, you’ll travel through a stunning mountain landscape to one of the world’s largest craters, an active volcano set 8,500 feet above sea level. At the Poas Volcano National Park, enjoy a one-hour guided tour and fascinating exhibits. Next, savor a traditional Costa Rican lunch at a charming restaurant before traveling to the picturesque town of Sarchi to watch artisans paint wood crafts, leather goods and souvenirs. Coribici River Float – Enjoy a relaxing, two-hour trip down the Corobicí River on a river raft filled with excitement as you maneuver class I and II waters. Cruise deep into the jungle, and keep your eyes peeled for howler monkeys, white-faced capuchin monkeys, marmots, parrots, herons, wood storks, spoonbills and more while you marvel at the magnificent flora along the way. After the rafting experience, fuel up with a delicious home-style Costa Rican lunch. Tropical Forest Canopy Zip Line and Aerial Tram Combination – Take to the trees for a scenic tour of Costa Rica’s diverse tropical forest. First, soak up stunning views over the canopy on the Pacific Forest Aerial Tram. Then set off on a zip line adventure, soaring across creeks and small waterfalls through the tropical forest using 15 traverses ranging from 262 feet to 720 feet apart.
